Jacob’s Light Opens
The Jacob’s Light Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to providing overseas troops with small comforts that are enjoyed in the United States, recently held a ribboncutting ceremony to celebrate their grand opening at the Islip Foreign Trade Zone. The Foundation was started by Dorine Kenney (center, with scissors) in honor of her son, SPC Jacob Fletcher, who was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army. SPC Fletcher was killed by a roadside bomb
while serving in Iraq on November 14th, 2003. Just eleven days after his death, Ms. Kenney shipped the first package of supplies to her son’s comrades. From that first package has grown an organization that impacts thousands of soldiers with each shipment. “I served two tours in Afghanistan, and I know how much it means to soldiers when we are able to enjoy supplies shipped from home that we cannot get overseas,” said Islip Town Supervisor Tom
Croci. “The Jacob’s Light Foundation serves a critical function to improving the morale of our overseas troops, and we’re truly proud to have them here at our facility.” “Packing Nights”, where volunteers can help package goods being sent overseas, are held on the last Tuesday evening of every month. For more information, please visit http://www.jacobsprogram .org/Home.aspx or call 631.5046217.
Parent Breakfast The John F. Kennedy Elementary School PTA held a special Kindergarten Parent Breakfast on the morning of September 20th. PTA President Tracy Rice, Vice President Susan Kavanagh, council delegate Danielle Maccarino, and the membership team, Louise Kniff and Kelly Caragiulo, welcomed the newest parents to the school.
Refreshments and tasty treats – including homemade coffeecake – were arrayed in the school’s cafeteria and useful information was presented in a sociable setting. “It was so nice to see such a wonderful turnout of kindergarten parents,” said Rice. “We like to host this informal event so that parents who may have children entering school
for the first time can relax and meet other parents like themselves.” “I remember how intimidating it was when I first came to a PTA meeting,” recalled Kavanagh. “It is so important to everyone on our board at JFK to make sure that all our new parents feel genuinely welcome and comfortable.”

Relatives and neighbors of William Mahoney Jr., of Ronkonkoma, were recently joined by elected officials and members of the Lakeland Fire Department in a ceremony to dedicate Beaver Lane in his honor. On September 11th, 2001, William was serving with Rescue Company 4 of Elmhurst, Queens. His company was among the first to respond to the crisis, and he died when the towers collapsed. “William’s memory reminds us to continue to strive for the values that
he held dear: love for our friends and family, and service to our community,” said Islip Supervisor Tom Croci. At the time of his death William was just 38, with four children. He began his firefighting career as a junior fireman with the Lakeland Fire Department, and continued to serve in the department as an adult. Early in his career, before joining the New York Fire Department, William served as a New York City policeman. His duties often required him to
utilize his scuba training, and he was part of the task force that recovered debris and wreckage from the TWA Flight 800 crash. He was known throughout his neighborhood and the community not only for his work as a firefighter, but also for his involvement in the Connetquot Youth Association. In addition to Rescue Company 4, William was one of five members of the Lakeland Volunteer Fire Department to lose their life on September 11th, 2001.
HELPING THE HUNGRY - Councilman John Cochrane Jr. and his staff attended the Help Bag Hunger event at the ShopRite of Bay Shore to help fight against hunger by bagging groceries. Throughout the day, cashiers collected donations to help fill the shelves of local community food banks. Dear Readers, I love October! It’s the month that kicks off the holiday season with wonderful charity events from my favorite rescue organizations. Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue has planned a great evening. Money that’s raised from ticket sales will go to the life saving efforts of this worthy organization. Can you think of a better way to spend your money on a night out? Here are the details. The Long Island Golden Retriever Rescue Inc. will host its Shop & Dine & Laugh Fundraiser on Thursday, October 18th, at the Holbrook Country Club, 700 Patchogue-Holbrook Road in Holbrook, from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be a buffet dinner, cake, coffee and soda, as well as a cash bar. You will have the opportunity to purchase Pawhaus Jewels, purses, Tastefully Simple products, unique holiday gifts, teas, Avon and more. There will also be psychic readings, a caricaturist, a dog slide show, a Chinese Auction, and comedian Moody McCarthy is scheduled to perform. The cost is $50 per person by October 4th (payable to LIGRR). The psychic was a big hit last year! She was booked through the entire evening. Be sure to sign up early for your spot. The caricaturist was also busy throughout the evening. Some people sat for their pictures, while others brought dog and family pictures for the caricaturist to draw so they could give them as holiday gifts. The cost is $15 – one person or dog, $25 – 2 people or dogs, $10 – each additional person or dog. Your $50 ticket includes a buffet dinner and supports Golden Rescue. Please mail your tax deductible check to LIGRR, P.O. Box 566, Plainview, NY 11803, by October 4th. Include $30 additional if you would like a psychic reading. For more information, contact Valerie at 516.578.3803. Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

A few weeks ago, my friend and I got the bright inspiration to walk all the way to Kismet from the Fire Island Lighthouse. I had been told it wasn’t an extremely long journey, and, timed just right in the early fall, would be quite lovely and scenic. Well, it was certainly scenic. Considering that there is basically one route from the Lighthouse leading into the Fire Island communities, one would think there would be no need for directions. But, just for kicks, I decided to put the address of the restaurant we planned to go to – Surf’s Out – into my phone and ask the famous Siri for directions. Immediately, my trusty little map dropped a pin at our current location, as well as another quite some distance away. At first glance, it seemed rather far, but we paid no mind. We just started walking. Pretty soon, we saw the sign telling us we were entering Kismet Village. Okay, we were on the right track. My friend thought she remem-
bered that there was a particular cross street we would need to make a left turn on, in order to head north to the Bay side of the Island, where the restaurants were located. Not quite certain which road it was, we figured surely there would be a sign. Oh, there was a sign all right! The next marker we came across welcomed us to the Village of Saltaire – in other words, we were now exiting Kismet. Hmmm… interesting. And yet there remained the little glowing dot on my phone, still way off in the distance. Something was very wrong. As I zoomed in further, I started to faintly make out the words “Ocean Beach” stamped on the map. Ocean Beach?! As in that town I had not too long ago take a ferry to?! I didn’t even know you could walk there if you wanted to! And who in their right mind would want to? Uh-oh, we were seriously off track. At that point, short of knocking on a local resident’s door – many of whom had already packed it in for the season – the only other
passers-by consisted of bicyclists zooming by – and deer…lots of deer, galloping across the street, darting from one yard to the other presumably in search of something to munch on. Ah, but then, out of the blue came an older couple, clearly local residents out for a leisurely afternoon stroll. “Excuse me, but can you tell us if there is a restaurant near here?” my friend inquired. “Oh yes,” the man said. Oh good, I thought. “But not here…” Uhoh. “It’s way back in Kismet,” he gestured in the direction from which we had just come. Oh boy. “How far, exactly?” “Oh, it’s a good hike,” his wife said apologetically. We politely thanked them and began the long process of retracing our steps, finally arriving at our intended destination – approximately 3.5 miles and 1 hour and 20 minutes after departing. All for the experience of walking to Kismet. It was an experience all right. Suffice it to say, Siri will not be invited on our next journey.

where they can track pollution trends in an effort to devise solutions to this ever growing problem. Muller says that the amount of smoking and drug-related items found sparked a discussion among the kids about how both were not only hazardous to your health but to the environment. Nancy Cochran, KIC Executive Director, adds that this group represents what KIC is all about. “People taking ownership of their community to make it a better place to live. These efforts help keep our community clean and our environment healthy,” says Cochran.

A KIC (Keep Islip Clean) sponsored group called “The Spotless Sparkles” participated in The American Littoral Society and The Ocean Conservancy Annual Global Intercostal Cleanup. Christian Muller, a 7th grader at Islip Middle School, named the group and served as Group Leader and organizer. The objective of this global effort is to remove and catalog litter and debris from our waterways, wetlands and coastlines in order to preserve these delicate and environmentally diverse ecosystems. The group of almost 30 volunteers cleaned up Islip Town Beach and the surrounding assessable wetlands, collecting bags of garbage and recording the critical data on summary cards. The data was sent to scientists at the Ocean Conservancy

Freedom Plaque Dedicated East Islip High School held a special Patriot Day ceremony on the morning of September 11th, dedicating a bronze plaque donated by the student council. The plaque, displayed in the school’s lobby, is
emblazoned with the words “Freedom Is Never Free” and honors the memory of East Islip graduates who have given their lives in service to their country. Present at the solemn ceremony was recently
retired teacher Dorsy Palios, the school’s student council and STARS club adviser last year. Palios was the main driver of the plaque project, which was originally scheduled for dedication this past May.

That date coincided with a day the school was closed, so the ceremony was moved to September to mark the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Two students who worked with Palios in designing and purchasing the plaque, 11th-graders Rachel Lopicollo and Thea Tsolomitis, were also invited to attend, as was Regina Pope, a teacher assistant at the high school. Pope’s son, U.S. Army Cpl. Robert C. Pope II of East Islip, died on November 7th, 2005 while serving in Iraq.
Superintendent of Schools John J. Finello and Principal William Brennen, who acknowledged the special admiration and level of support shown to the nation’s military by the East Islip community, welcomed representatives of several service branches, all recruiters and liaisons to the Long Island community. Among the military in attendance were Marine Corps Maj. Alexander E. Gilbert, Sgt. Robert Rodriguez, Lance Cpl. Robert Gartner and Lance
Cpl. Ivelaw France; U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Patrick F. Ullrich and Sgt. Philip W. Hodges; and U.S. Navy Petty Officer Owen Johnson. The men spoke movingly of their experiences in the military, paid their respects to the memory of Cpl. Pope and the losses of 9/11, and took time to examine the high school’s framed list of U.S. service academy graduates, recently put back on prominent display in the lobby. The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America will hold their fall walk on Sunday, October 14th at 12 noon at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook. Many patients feel that they are alone in their struggle with IBD, not knowing how to explain to others what they go through. Take Steps provides the perfect environment for patients and their families to come together and know they are not alone in this fight. The afternoon is filled with music, food, kids’ activities, local entertainment and most importantly the company of hundreds of people who truly understand the impacts of IBD. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are painful, medically incurable illnesses that attack the digestive system. Crohn's disease may attack anywhere along the digestive track, while ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon). Symptoms may include
abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever, weight loss and fatigue. Many patients require hospitalization and surgery. Most people develop the diseases between the ages of 15 and 35; however the incidence is increasing in young people. Take Steps is the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’s national walk program to raise money for critical research and awareness about these painful and unpredictable digestive diseases. Thousands of people will gather this spring and fall at 158 walk sites across the country to join the fight against Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The walks are family friendly festivals with activities for everyone including bands, games, activities, food and a leisurely walk through a park. Take Steps Walks across the country have raised over $30 million for research and patient support services. The
program is committed to transforming the lives of those impacted by these diseases and leading them to a brighter future through well-funded, cutting-edge scientific research. Join in this effort – register today at www.cctakesteps.org and take a step toward a future free from Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, or contact Suzanne Beck, Walk Manager at 516.222.5530.

with others, while receiving the skills and support necessary to understand and move through the grieving process. “Losing an addicted child, sibling, parent, spouse or any family member to an overdose, car crash, or in any other way is extremely traumatic; a life is lost and in its place are often feelings of guilt, anger and
grief,” explained LICADD Clinical Director Steven Chassman, LCSW. “We want anyone experiencing such a loss to know that they are not alone and that healing is possible,” he added. Every 19 minutes, one American dies of an accidental overdose. “Those figures are reflected on Long Island, and our communities have been devastated by
this senseless loss of life,” said Dr. Jeffrey L. Reynolds, LICADD’s Executive Director. “We are working hard to prevent fatal overdoses through prevention, education and direct access to addiction services, but until the fatalities are dramatically reduced, this support group will be available to anyone who has lost a loved one.”
To participate in LICADD’s Grief and Loss Support Group, or to get more information about the resources LICADD offers to individuals and families who have a loved one who is dealing with substance abuse or addiction, please call 516.747.2606, or visit www.licadd.com.

Matthew Brown successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review in March, officially making him an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America. Matthew’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Sunday, October 28th, beginning at 12 noon at the East Islip Fire Department, 30 East Main Street in East Islip. Matthew Brown is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle,” Matthew has served the troop as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Troop Guide, Bugler, and Librarian. Matthew is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honorary Camping Society. Matthew has had many unique Scouting experiences, including attending and participating in the Boy Scouts of American 100th Anniversary National Jamboree in 2010 at Ft. A.P. Hill, Virginia; attended summer camp at Camp Wakpominee in Fort Ann, NY for several summers, and has participated in various Troop activities including hiking the Gettysburg historic trails and Washington, D.C. trip. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 Merit Badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major Service Project for the Community. Matthew has actually successfully completed 30 Merit Badges. The Service Project that Matthew conducted with the assistance of his fellow Troop members was the design and development of a kneeler and flower/shrubs planter at the Our Lady of Knock Shrine at The Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 7 Hall in East Islip. As Matthew reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “My Eagle Project has been one of my greatest accomplishments. I never fully understood the depths at which it took to complete an Eagle Project until now. The road to the becoming an Eagle Scout has been a very valuable learning experience. Scouting has been an experience that I will treasure and carry with me forever.” Matthew is a Senior at East Islip High School, where he has been on the
school’s Honor Roll each and every semester and involved in a variety of clubs and organizations – such as being a member of the Math Honors Society and a member of the Chess Club. Matthew also wrestles on the school’s Varsity Wrestling Team and has played on the High School Football Team. Matthew is also a member of the newly formed East Islip High School Medical and Health Technology Career Academy under the direction of Israel Malinowitzer and Lisa Neri. Music has been an important part of Matthew’s life as a Bagpiper in The Roisin Dubh Pipe Band, affiliated with The Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 7, East Islip, NY. Matthew has competed against other Bagpipers, where he has placed in 10 of the 11 individual competitions this past year. Community Service has been a part of Matthew’s personal and Troop life, where he has been an Altar Server at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, East Islip, has served as a math tutor to students at local school districts, and also has participated in many Eagle Service Projects within Troop 205. With Matthew’s interests in becoming a Veterinarian in his career, he was selected and participated in the Cornell University Pre-Veterinary College Program over this last summer in Ithaca, NY where he earned 3 college credits. He has also volunteered at the East Islip Animal Hospital. Matthew has a goal to enter college as a Pre-Vet Major in the Fall of 2013, after his High School Graduation in June, 2013. Matthew is the son of Ann Marie and Edward Brown of East Islip. Matthew’s father, Edward, is an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 205.
App Inventor
Fellow alumni remember Garrett Bernichon as a member of East Islip High School’s Class of 2011, but golfers may now recognize him as the co-inventor of the recently introduced Course Counsel iPhone app, which helps players improve their game and advises them on which club to use. “Course Counsel was my good friend John Skubic's idea,” Bernichon explained. “It is an iPhone app that is designed to aid golfers on the golf course. Using the GPS in the iPhone, we were able to calculate the distance of each shot of the golfer. By doing this, the app can then keep a ‘live’ average distance for each club the golfer uses. In addition to this, the golfer can set his own clubs and also use a built-in map feature to
calculate how far they are from the hole. The app can even recommend the proper club to use, based on the averages. Course Counsel also has a scorecard, keeps track of over/under par, and now provides an option to tweet your score with Twitter.” Bernichon and Skubic spent approximately three months developing the app, which took over 5,000 lines of code. “We split the app into smaller, more manageable projects that each of us would work on,” recalled Bernichon. “We pieced together our work and eventually were able to produce a polished app ready for Apple’s App Store.” The finished app retails for 99 cents and has received very positive reviews. Bernichon is currently studying computer engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. Founded in 1869, Purdue is famous for its competitive engineering programs and curricula. “I love it at Purdue, and there is definitely a lot of opportunity here,” he said. The college sophomore’s experience in computer programming,
both at home and in East Islip’s schools, came in handy. “I had some programming background coming into this project,” Bernichon said. “I was a student in Raymond Willie's AP computer science class. I really learned a lot from him and he's a great teacher. I know that Mr. Willie’s projects pushed me to learn more about programming and certainly gave me a head start compared to other students. I’ve also had a lot of inspiration from my father, a software engineer, and have also received ideas and feedback from both my family and John's family. John and I both bought an iOS development book and taught ourselves from it. Course Counsel is written in the Objective-C programming language, and in the same semester that we developed the app, we were enrolled in a class called C Programming for Engineers.” He already has a fan in his former EI teacher, Raymond Willie. “I purchased Course Counsel and it is a great app,” said Willie. “I am pleased to recognize Garrett’s success.”
SERVICE COMMEMORATION - Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane Jr. (right) was recently presented with a “shadowbox” commemorating his decades of service in the United States Navy. The shadowbox, which contains rank insignia, medals (along with their corresponding pins), and other memorabilia representative of a serviceman’s tenure in the military, was presented to Councilman Cochrane Jr. by his father, John Cochrane Sr. (Captain, USN – retired). Councilman Cochrane Jr. retired from the U.S. Navy earlier this year, having also risen to the rank of Captain.
I feel as if my mind is lost I’m in a room all alone I feel that no one is here with me Just the wall and the sky above I want to sing a soft-spoken song But there is no one to sing along I hear a beat inside of me And a tune inside my head But with nothing around I’m a loner To myself I keep the tune But no one ever heard the song Just my mind that is now gone

Bay Shore Middle School’s Open House, held on Thursday, September 20th, was packed with anxious parents who followed their child's schedule and spent approximately 10 minutes with each of their child’s teachers. In the large cafeteria, curricula from each department/subject were displayed while the small cafeteria played host to many of the Middle School clubs currently available to students. The Middle School PFA provided refreshments and
raffled off numerous prize baskets donated by teachers, administrators and families throughout the district. Members of the National Junior Honor Society volunteered to help parents find their way through the school while answering their questions. Parents also visited a book fair in the school’s Computer Lab, where they could sign up for the district’s Parent Portal. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful opening to the 2012-2013 school year.
