Mrs. Pat Valle and guide dog Major showed the students how the Guide Dog Foundation trains dogs to be helpful companions to the blind and to veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Mrs. Valle answered all of the students’ questions and also allowed them to pet Major.

Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Perception is everything. Reality is secondary. Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn’t it? And yet, how often do we form our opinions of someone based solely upon an initial, sometimes completely skewed, impression? Feel vs. facts. Sometimes, a gut feeling is the right one. Other times, more careful consideration is needed. But how to determine the difference…that is the question. I have often been told that I form opinions about others far too quickly, leaving little room for the actual process of becoming acquainted. It’s basically black and white, no

shades of gray along the way. Not a great way to be, I’ll be the first to admit; especially because, what happens when the tables are turned and someone makes the exact same snap judgment about you? Not a fair assessment, is it? I’m not sure what changed over the years. I don’t think I was always like this. But lately, my level of impatience and intolerance has grown by leaps and bounds. I’d like to think it all started with my experiences with various members of the fast food industry and their general level of incompetence at the drive-thru. But perhaps that was just the trigger. In any case, I do take exception when others exhibit

the same level of annoyance without taking the time to truly get to know me. This has caused me to take a step back and reevaluate others’ perceptions of me lately. What’s that they say about never judging a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? True words indeed. Perhaps we should all take that step back and not rush to judge. Sure, some initial impressions are spot on – but what harm does it do to take a little extra time to either confirm or refute that gut feeling? None, so far as I can tell. And who knows, you might just find a new friend in the process.

The 20th Annual Spring Egg Hunt at Belmont State Park will be held on Saturday, March 23rd, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Egg hunts will be every 15 minutes, beginning at 12:15 p.m. Children will be hunting for eggs in three groups: ages 4 and under, ages 5-6, and ages 7-9. This event is co-sponsored by radio stations WBAB, WBLI and the Natural Heritage Trust. Philosophy Department at the University of Rochester. A highly popular teacher of philosophy, the late Professor Turbayne is often described by former students as a “consummate teacher” who made a lasting impression on them. He was also one of the most prolific and influential scholars of George Berkeley, the 18th Century Irish philosopher. Mr. Berkeley is perhaps best known as the author of the classic treatise, The Myth of Metaphor, first published by Yale University Press in 1962. Professor Turbayne’s devotion to advancing understanding of Berkeley is reflected in the numerous articles he authored, his producing six major editions of Berkeley’s works, and the creation and funding of the International Berkeley Essay Prize. Thomas Curtin is a recent Ph.D. graduate from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He

has a Masters of Arts in Philosophy from University of London, Birkbeck College and a Bachelors of Arts in Philosophy from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He specializes in the history of modern philosophy and the philosophy of religion, especially 18th century philosophy of religion. Curtin is currently an Adjunct Instructor in the Ammerman Campus philosophy department, having started teaching at Suffolk County Community College in the spring 2012 semester. Dr. Lowell Kleiman, Academic Chair for Suffolk County Community College’s Philosophy Department said, “On behalf of the department, we would like to congratulate Tom on receiving this prestigious and significant award. Suffolk County Community College Adjunct Instructor of Philosophy, Thomas Curtin, was recently announced as the winner of the 2013 Colin and Ailsa Turbayne International Berkeley Essay Prize Competition for his essay Berkeley’s Conception of Causal Power. Essays were required to be new and unpublished, written in English and not exceed 5,000 words in length. All references to Berkeley were directed to be to Luce/Jessop, and a MLA or similar standard for notes was followed. Submissions were blind reviewed and judged by members of a review board selected by the Department of Philosophy at the University of Rochester. One winner was selected. Some years before their deaths, Professor and Mrs. Colin Turbayne established an International Berkeley Essay Prize competition in cooperation with the

Lee Xippolitos, RN, PhD, CARN, CS, NPP, CNAA, BC, Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Nursing, has received the Community Service Award from the Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk County (VIBS) in recognition of her efforts to establish the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Center at Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH). Dr. Xippolitos received the award “for her role in establishing a SANE Center at Stony Brook University and for partnering with VIBS to establish a training program for forensic nurse examiners,” said Pamela

Johnston, Executive Director of VIBS Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center. “These specially trained nurses provide compassionate healthcare to traumatized survivors, while collecting evidence that will be crucial for police investigation and the DA’s prosecution.” “To be honored by VIBS is quite thrilling,” Dr. Xippolitos said in accepting the award during a March 7th ceremony in St. James. “The people that VIBS touches are people in need. Those who work at VIBS are pioneers in the field of intimate violence, and their services bring hope to thousands of individuals, adults and children on Long Island.” A long-time volunteer with VIBS, Dr. Xippolitos helped establish the SANE Center at SBUH in 2009. The center is a collaborative effort among VIBS Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook University Hospital, the Suffolk County Police Department and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Staffed by Registered Nurses with advanced education and critical preparation in the forensic examination of sexual assault victims, the center provides comprehensive evidence collection for more effective investigations and better prosecutions, while preserving the victim’s dignity and reducing psychological trauma. Last year, Stony Brook’s SANE Center saw 121 victims in the hospital’s Emergency Department, Dr. Xippolitos said. “Our School of Nursing continues to work closely with VIBS educational outreach programs,” Dr. Xippolitos said. In particular, she cited the work of Marie Ann Marino, EdD, RN, PNP, Associate Dean for

Academic Affairs and a certified forensic nurse, who educates Stony Brook nurses who aspire to become SANE nurses. SANE nurses are on call 24 hours a day to meet the needs of victims who are brought into any of Suffolk County’s three SANE centers, located at Stony Brook, Good Samaritan Hospital and Peconic Bay Medical Center. The SANE program has operated in Suffolk County since 1999. “The work that these nurses do honors the victim’s right to make choices about medical and emotional care, as well as legal prosecution,” Dr. Xippolitos said. A native of Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Xippolitos received her AS degree in Nursing from Farmingdale College. She received her bachelor of science and master of science in nursing degrees from Stony Brook University School of Nursing, and she completed her PhD in Nursing at Adelphi University. As Dean of the School of Nursing, she is responsible for more than 1,000 student nurses. Dr. Xippolitos is certified as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and as a Nurse Practitioner in psychiatric nursing. She is certified as a Nurse Administrator through the American Nurses Credentialing Board and is a member of American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and New York Organization of Nurse Executives, serving on AONE’s International Committee. She is a charter member and past president of Kappa Gamma Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau, International, the international honor society for nursing.

Science Club Planets and magnets and volts, oh my! With a grant through the Educational Foundation, Sayville Middle School is recruiting young scholars for the new After-School Science Club. While teaching lifelong critical-thinking skills in a fun and nurturing environment, Club Moderators Mrs. Linda Davis and Ms. Claire Rymer wanted to get students excited about astronomy, biology, and chemistry. Most students who have joined the club

do not have time during the regular school day to enroll in a planetarium course due to their busy schedules. The addition of this club not only provides those students with extra science-rich experiences, it helps them enjoy an increased level of esteem when they are successful at learning through experiment. “I like the club because I can learn about the constellations and then go outside at night and see them,” says Paul C. Mrs. Davis and Ms. Rymer

enjoy the club because they get the chance to “provide quality science learning experiences to students who might not otherwise have the opportunity.” Building models, analyzing scientific toys, studying optical illusions, and conducting sky talks in the planetarium are all on the agenda this winter and spring! The Science Club meets every other Monday after school in the planetarium.

Communication Cove Friendships are forming at the Sayville Middle School. Another new AfterSchool Club called Communication Cove, (also thanks to the generosity of the Educational Foundation) has popped up and students are flocking to take part. Ms. Rymer and Mrs. O’Hoppe facilitate interactions between Special and General Education Students as they participate in funfilled activities, including

scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, games and crafts. The club provides many opportunities for students to interact with one another and use talents not normally showcased during the regular school day. Communication Cove improves relationships between children of all abilities, as it provides students with special needs the opportunity to increase their social skills. All members of the Communication Cove learn about cooperation,

leadership, winning, and losing and team building. This club promotes tolerance, sensitivity, and acceptance of all its members and already new friendships have been made. The students’ enthusiasm has been contagious and attendance has grown with each and every meeting. The Communication Cove meets every other Thursday and is open to any Middle School student interested in meeting others!

Disability Awareness Month Everyone wants, and deserves, to enjoy life, feel productive and be secure. Since 1987, when President Ronald Regan officially proclaimed March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we have taken extra steps during this month to raise awareness about the needs and rights of people with disabilities and to celebrate their accomplishments and contributions to our communities and society as a whole. The original proclamation called for people to provide understanding, encouragement and opportunities to help persons with developmental disabilities to lead productive and fulfilling lives. On Friday & Saturday, February 1st & 2nd, veteran Music Teacher Ms. Theresa Rowden, welcomed family, friends and members of the community to the Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School (OBMS) 2013 production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. The cast and crew for this year’s major musical have been working hard since December to put together this amazing show. Ms. Rowden said “the OBMS stage was graced with the stars of The Little Mermaid. James Platto

was born to play this Jamaican Crustacian with a larger than life personality! George Owen and Dana Silvestro were perfectly matched to remind us that love is worth finding. Anthony DiBella made everyone fall in love with his performance as Flounder. Ursula, played by Sarah Minto, lit up the stage with her evil heart and tentacles! Alexandra Poulin and Kelly Iocca as the slippery duo known as Flotsam and Jetsam, gave an outstanding performance. Nicholas

Pattilio was simply delightful as Grimsby, and the character of King Triton was illuminated by the talent and warmth of Alec O’Brien.” With a mixture of humor, drama, singing and dancing, The Little Mermaid entertained the excited audience, which would give the cast a thunderous ovation at the show’s conclusion! Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President, Anthony Felicio, Jr., is proud to announce the selection of Mrs. Erica Martino-Lattuga as a recipient of the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) Association Life Honor Roll award. Felicio was notified by NYSUT Teachers (NYSUT) Association President Richard C. Iannuzzi that Martino-Lattuga has been “… recognized for her lifesaving actions while on duty at Connetquot H.S.” As a result of her quickthinking, she recognized that a student was having a seizure and had lost

consciousness. MartinoLattuga performed CPR on the student and was able to revive him, before paramedics arrived on the scene. At the time Erica was 6 ½ months pregnant, and as a result of her intercession, experienced major complications, putting herself and the health of her unborn child in jeopardy. Erica was put on complete bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy and, fortunately, this brave teacher and her baby are well. NYSUT has recognized Erica’s quick-thinking, and lifesaving reactions during

this potential crisis, by placing her name on the organization’s ‘Life Honor Roll’. According to Felicio “Erica’s name will be inscribed on a plaque and displayed in the Suffolk NYSUT Regional office. Her name will also be scrolled during the NYSUT Representative Assembly, before 3,000 delegates, which will be held in Washington, DC, from April 11th-13th. Congratulations to Erica for her heroic efforts, and richly deserved recognition.”

ENERGY TEXTS - Connetquot Central School District Idle Hour Elementary School 2nd grade students from Mrs. Cerulli’s class worked with 5th graders from Mrs. Bancroft’s class to construct personal informational “energy textbooks.” Each textbook covered a different type of energy, from sound to electrical to solar energy. The young authors did a thorough job with each textbook, including an illustrated cover, title page, dedication page, author biography, table of contents, headings, chapters, diagrams, photos, illustrations, captions, charts, glossary and index. The books were presented in the schools Atrium by the second-graders themselves.

Mrs. Kim Licato, Connetquot School District Chairperson of LOTE (languages other than English), and ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher Christine Allen, welcomed students, parents and teachers to the 19th annual ESL Dinner on January 30th at Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS). Guests had the opportunity to mingle, chat, enjoy Internationally renowned cuisine (PIZZA!), and participate in an exciting ‘Reptile EdVenture’, by Erik Callendar! Mrs. Licato said that “The students and parents enjoyed pizza and dessert and had an opportunity to learn all about different reptiles, insects and amphibians. The students enthusiastically

participated with Erik and were able to interact with animals from around the world.” The night was organized by the Connetquot ESL Department teachers and supervisors. Mrs. Licato thanked the following teachers and administrators for supporting the annual ESL Dinner: Superintendent Dr. Alan B. Groveman, Director of Pupil Personnel Services Ms. Gail Santo, principals Mrs. Denise Toscano & Mr. Stu Pollak, and dedicated teachers Christine Allen, Brian Atkins, Loretta Powell, Mary Katherine Goldacker, and Andrea TiptonRudolph. This 19th annual ESL dinner provided parents with the chance to meet and speak with the teachers

and administrators who work with their children. It also allows Connetquot families the chance to make connections with others of similar, and different, cultural backgrounds. Connetquot’s ESL program, a mini-United Nations in the middle of Suffolk County, consists of 85 students from Bangladesh, China, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, India, Pakistan, Poland, Turkey and Vietnam. Connetquot’s ESL teachers enjoyed another opportunity to mingle with so many of their students and their families, and to thank the community for their support of a program that has helped so many students assimilate as Americans.

PEACE & KINDNESS - On January 18th a colorful laser light show was the culminating activity for Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School students, teachers and staff. At the assembly, students sang songs celebrating the life, sacrifices and contributions of Dr. King. Students will be participating in Acts of Kindness projects throughout the year as a reminder, and confirmation, of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s work.

VISIT FROM ABE - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary 5th grade students recently had a chance to meet and interact with the nation’s 16th president, “Abraham Lincoln.” Dressed in full costume complete with his infamous beard and stovepipe hat, Lou Delbianco (Abe Lincoln) educated the students on Lincoln’s life, accomplishments and profound impact on our country. President Lincoln took questions from the eager 5th grade students at the conclusion of his presentation.

Celebrating Peace

Mr. John Delio, Principal of Connetquot’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School in Ronkonkoma, recently thanked the members of the Lakeland Volunteer Fire Department for their assistance. Mr. Delio, Youth & Family Services (YFS) coordinator Mrs. Eileen McAlpine, Phys Ed instructors and teacher volunteers had arranged for the students and staff to create, and photograph, a giant, living, ‘peace symbol’ on the athletic field behind the school on

January 18th. This living peace symbol was one part of a weeklong Kindness Project which culminated in the celebration of the life of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., on January 22nd. McAlpine told students that by treating one another with dignity and kindness, and following the Golden Rule, they would better understand Dr. King’s message of peace and selfrespect. Students, teachers and staff would later sing the

popular U-2 song Pride together as they created a visual message of peace and harmony.

Established in 1978, the USAA solicits nominations from teachers across the United States of students that have gone above and beyond in both talent and dedication in numerous areas of academic and co-curricular endeavor. These nominations are then submitted to the appropriate selection

committees for review after which the teachers are informed of the final awards which include scholarship opportunities, as well. According to SHS dramatics director Steven Hailey, these eleven young people “have been essential participants in our drama program both on stage and back stage since their freshman year and they deserve this recognition.”

High school students enrolled in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Health Related Occupations (HRO) Program at the Islip Career Center (ICC) in Oakdale typically do not have the opportunity to work with pre-school children. They usually work with an adult population when visiting local hospitals and nursing homes and their skills are practiced in the classroom. HRO Teacher Linda Niosi spoke with ESBOCES Early Childhood Education Teacher Gini Wagner about having her students present fire, home, pool, and playground safety to the preschoolers. Over the course of two months, the high school students gathered information and investigated the best way to present and teach information of this nature to preschoolers. Their presentations were very visual and they incorporated interactive SmartBoard activities,

games, and songs. A special demonstration was presented on dental health as well. The preschoolers gather in a circle for a fun, interactive learning experience. Teacher Linda Niosi sits on the floor beside Marissa M, Patchogue-Medford UFSD and Alex F., Comsewogue UFSD overseeing the interaction with them and the preschoolers. Programs from Nationwide Education were chosen because they are designed to help stimulate and raise awareness among children. The programs target areas such as financial capability, sustainable living, employability and safety. Student Alex F. of Comsewogue UFSD presented “home safety” to the students, assisted by Marissa M. of PatchogueMedford UFSD. Alex said, “Using the SmartBoard was an easy way for the children to learn. I

also made a poster with pictures that depicted “safe” and “unsafe” things. The children came up to the front of the room. They were asked to ‘point to something safe’ and then we watched to see if they chose the correct picture.” Marissa M., PatchogueMedford UFSD and Alex F., Comsewogue UFSD watch as pre-schooler Ashley C. from Oakdale chooses a picture that is “safe” from the poster that Alex created. After the presentation, the preschoolers were designated as Safety Superhero’s and given laminated certificates. The safety presentations were given throughout the month of February. At the conclusion of each presentation, the preschoolers received certificates, badges, toothbrushes, or pages to color, depending on the safety lesson.

Regional Competition

Bayport-Blue Point High School’s Science Olympiad team competed in the recent Long Island Eastern Regional Science Olympiad Competition this winter, where they captured an eighth-place ranking out of the 50 competing schools. By a mere point, the team fell just short of qualifying as the first alternate to the six teams traveling to the New York State Science Olympiad Competition. During the regional contest, the 15 team members and two alternates worked to make their district proud as they demonstrated their scientific knowledge during a series of 18 events. In addition to the team’s overall ranking, members Laura Chant and Victoria Mercouris received an individual fifth-place medal for their gravity vehicle, and in total, the rest of the

team scored in the top 10 in five of the 18 events. The contest’s written events included chemistry lab, forensics, disease detective, rocks and minerals, remote sensing, forestry, anatomy and physiology, designer genes, circuit lab, triple e, thermodynamics, dynamic planet and water quality, as well as building and construction events such as gravity vehicle, boomilever, magnetic levitron, glider plane and robot arm. The students had been training for the contest with the help of their coach Donna Edgar and team captains Christine Bachek, Alex Gamcsik, Victoria Mercouris and Shane Trauthwein on a weekly basis since October, increasing their practice time to a daily schedule in February. BayportBlue Point students have been participating on the

high school’s team for the past 19 years; in the past 10 years, the team has advanced to the state competition six times and has been selected as the first alternate three times. State Grant Received The Friends of Connetquot Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the Friends were awarded a NY State OPRHP Municipal Grant of $150,000 through the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council. The grant will allow the Friends to continue their efforts to restore the historic Trout Hatchery and Nicoll Grist Mill at the Connetquot River State Park Preserve. For the last seven years, the Friends have been working on the restoration of both buildings. Work on the Grist Mill, one of the earliest structures at the Preserve, is being completed in stages. The State grant will allow for the completion of the structural framework, one of the final phases of the project. Once complete, the Mill will be a functioning mill and a museum dedicated to increasing the

public’s understanding of Long Island’s social and industrial history and the Preserve’s role within that framework. The Trout Hatchery, one of the first in the country, was closed in 2009 due to an outbreak of infectious pancreatic necrosis, a virus detrimental to juvenile trout but not humans. The closure’s impact on the Preserve and the local community was devastating: Preserve visitorship saw a significant drop that affected Preserve revenues and hurt local businesses. Seeing the need, the Friends are spearheading the Hatchery’s revitalization. Board member Richard Remmer said that the grant will create a source of diseasefree water and ensure that certain biosecurity improvements are made to the facility.

“Through best watershed management practices, ‘green’ technology, and the use of well water to create ‘super clean’ water for trout breeding, the Hatch House project will reinstate trout breeding at Connetquot, and will attract visitors back to the site, for both recreational and educational activities, all while preserving the Long Island environment.” Friends Board Chair Robert Labuski, speaking on behalf of the Board, has said that the Friends “are grateful to the LI Regional Economic Development Council, our local State Assemblymen and Senators, the staff at the LI Region office of Parks, and the many who wrote letters of support for our application. The community’s support was crucial to our success.”

PLACING SECOND - Connetquot School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School congratulates sixth grade student Darbie Burke for placing second in the Intermediate Division of the U.S. Figure Skating Championship in Omaha, Nebraska. Burke and her skating partner, Griffin Schwab, have been skating together from a young age, with Burke beginning at the age of three. Burke successfully balances her intense training schedule with her school work and social life.

Several FIRSTS Our Sayville science research students have been reaping amazing results in competitions thanks to the RESEARCH IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING course that has been sowing seeds of interest for several years. Since this curriculum offering was launched in 2007, self-motivated students, with highacademic standings, have been developing protocols and project designs that are based on nationally recognized science and engineering standards. Under the guidance of Science Research teacher Maria Brown, these high school students have been working independently or cooperatively in small collaborative groups with notable scientists and high-achieving students from other districts while engaging in research sometimes this research continues through the summer months and even for several years. Their final projects, which include formal presentations, are usually enhanced with multimedia and various technologies. While the goal of their course work is learning about how to solve problems through science research, the students are also encouraged to enter their research project designs in competitions to share what they have learned.

At the recent Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF), Sayville students achieved new firsts in competitions for Sayville High School’s RISE Program. Aneria Kinariwalla and her partner Evan Chernack (from South Side High School) took First Place a first for Sayville - in the cellular biology division at LISEF. As a result of this achievement, the partners are headed to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in May; Also presenting at the LISEF, Curran Boyce took Second Place in Animal Sciences - another first for Sayville. Another Series of FIRSTS! As first-time competitors, three newly-formed teams and one individual, totaling ten Sayville Middle School Seventhgrade students from Tracy Toth’s Enrichment classes, participated in the Broadcom Masters Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (middle school division). [During the Fall, Mrs. Brown had visited Mrs. Toth’s class to offer the enrichment students a chance to awaken their scientific curiosity by participating in a scientific project. Some of these students presented their research.] All teams and our individual competitor

won awards: TWO of these teams took First Place and qualify to submit their research to the National Broadcom Masters Competition; another team took Third Place, and the individual competitor also took Honorable Mention. Stop World Hunger, Inc. is pleased to announce its schedule of tennis events for the 2013 season. This year marks the 33rd year of Stop World Hunger’s charity tennis events for famine relief. All funds are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to assist them in their efforts

to feed God’s hungry children “where the need is greatest.” Currently, the World Food Programme estimates that 2.6 million children die annually of hunger-related causes. When it comes to starving children, the only acceptable number is

zero. First up for the 2013 is the Stop World Hunger Spring Tennis Party. Scheduled for Saturday evening, March 23rd, it takes place at Carefree Raquet Club in North Merrick. The tennis party lasts from 8 p.m. to midnight. Players are

guaranteed two hours of playing time (doubles) and plenty of refreshments. The cost is $15 for players and $7.50 for non-players. Next up is the annual Stop World Hunger Spring Tennis Tournament. Divisions are established based upon the ability levels of the registrants:

intermediate (3.0-3.5), advanced intermediate (3.5-4.0), and advanced (4.0-4.5+). Players schedule their own matches at mutually convenient times and sites. All matches are to be played between April 6th and June 16th. Awards will be
