Concussion of the brain is the very common injury that occurs under different circumstances. It can occur during the simple slip and fall accident, motor vehicle accident, but most commonly it does in sport. Over the last ten years a lot of research was done with an intention to explain why there is much higher incidence of neurological disorders affecting professional sport players. This study eventually revealed that a mild head injury causes pathological processes that eventually may lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, etc. During the mild head injury or mild concussion of the brain, the symptoms of the actual injury could be transient and brief, and eventually this condition becomes virtually asymptomatic or having very subtle symptoms. Those symptoms could be just a mild headache, excessive fatigue, excessive or lack of sleep, problem with concentration. Since many symptoms of concussion are brief and may not be present on the second or third day after the concussion, it will leave very little tools to help a doctor to determine if the player is ready to go back to play. Current thinking is that optimal recovery of concussed students occurs when there is cognitive, physical, and emotional rest following injury. Additionally, research has shown that 92% of second injuries occur in the first week following the initial injury, and the goal is to allow adequate recovery time before allowing a student to risk re-injury. Pressure to return an athlete before it is safe can be intense from parents and athletes. Primary care physicians are being asked to assist in the process of keeping injured children safe by remaining objective and withholding participation until it is deemed safe with a reasonable degree of medical certainty.

return to school), but we anticipate a similar slow exertional challenge as we see in RTP. The graduated steps begin after the student has a medical clearance to return to academics, and is symptom free off pain killing medicines for a full 24 hours. RTL should be an individualized steady progression with the parent’s checking the child daily for a return of symptoms and alerting you if the student is struggling so you can provide appropriate requests for medical accommodations to the school as needed. Unlike a RTP, the RTL might start at any level and progress at a rate individualized to the student’s needs and tolerance. Steps might be skipped as tolerated and might look something like this: Students with reasonable recovery times typically will get accommodations within the school by the principal. Students with protracted recovery beyond about 10 weeks, a school quarter, are likely eligible for a 504 plan or an IEP, and you might be asked to write a request to support the family at that time.

The Concussion Act of NYS

The Concussion Act of NYS took effect July 1, 2012, and requires schools to: • Educate parents, athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and school nurses on concussion, • Remove observed or suspected concussed students from play based on signs and symptoms, • Withhold further participation until evaluated by, and received written and signed authorization to return to activities from a licensed physician. • Obtain physician clearance, and when the athlete has been symptom-free off pain killing medicines for a minimum of 24 hours and allow them to begin a monitored progressive six phase return to play. MAKING A CLINICAL DETERMINATION • Symptoms: somatic (e.g. headache, nausea, dizziness), cognitive (e.g. feeling in a fog), and/or emotional (e.g. liability)

• Behavioral changes: irritability, personality changes • Cognitive impairment: Hard time concentrating, trouble remembering, not feeling themselves, being confused, thinking speed slowed down, taking a longer time to react • Sleep disturbance: drowsiness, insomnia GRADUATED RETURN TO PHYSICAL EXERTION AND ACTIVITY OR RETURN TO PLAY (RTP) This is a six step gradual return to activity. The RTP protocol may not start until an athlete is completely symptom-free for a full 24 hours off pain killing medicines, and must remain symptom-free for 24 hours following each stage before progressing further. RECOVERY Average recovery following concussion is about a week to ten days; protracted recovery with post concussion syndrome is after 21 days. Young teenage girls often have protracted recovery more than any other group. RETURN TO LEARN (RTL) More information will be forthcoming about RTL (cognitive

Boat Burning The Long Island Maritime Museum recently announced that their 22nd Annual Boat Burning will take place on Friday, October 26th from 5 to 9 p.m. The rain date is October 27th. The Boat Burning, which is held on the grounds of the museum, marks the height of fall with an event for the entire family. Admission will be $5, with children under five free. Each year, the Museum receives a donation of a large, wooden boat that is in a condition of being beyond repair. Loosely based on the Norse tradition of a Viking Funeral, the boat is placed in the center of the museum’s property and set ablaze by the West Sayville Fire Department to the delight of the many families in attendance. “This unique annual event has become a fall tradition in our community,” said the Museum’s Executive

Director Steve Jones. “In addition to hosting Long Island’s largest bonfire, it’s a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase the outstanding work that our boat shop volunteers do, by raffling off one of their beautiful creations.” This year’s raffle boat is a handmade wooden 15’ Skerry by Chesapeake Light Craft. This attractive boat, constructed by

volunteers at the M u s e u m ’ s Moonbeam/Grooms Boat Shop, is extremely versatile in that it can be utilized either as a sail boat or a row boat. Raffle tickets are $5.00 a piece or (5) for $20.00 and can be purchased right up until the time of the drawing. Tickets are also available for purchase prior to the event. Attendees are

encouraged to wear Halloween costumes. In addition to live music, there will be a featured performance by special guests at 5:30 p.m. The Long Island Maritime Museum, which operates under a license agreement with Suffolk County Parks, serves to preserve Long Island's maritime history and heritage for educational purposes.

They walked for Long Island friends and neighbors, they walked for family members and loved ones, they walked in honor and in memory of the close to 9,600 people on Long Island that die each year from cardiovascular diseases and stroke – Long Island’s No. 1 and No. 4 causes of death. They walked to start a healthier journey and a healthier life. Led by John Buran, President & CEO of Flushing Bank, American Heart Association Long Island Heart Walk Red Cap Ambassador, 13 year-old, Cecilia Funk and her family, and WCBS-TV correspondent Jennifer McLogan and thousands of walkers on a beautiful warm and sunny day, stepped out on Sunday, September 23rd, at Jones Beach to help save Long Island lives from heart disease and stroke. “It has been a pleasure and an

honor to lead this campaign as Chairman and I appreciate each and every one that supported our efforts to make a difference and save lives.” said John Buran. The Long Island Heart Walk was an opportunity for people to improve their health by walking, while simultaneously raising funds to help fight heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association’s My Heart. My Life.™ movement will change how Americans live their lives. My Heart. My Life. is about making health a priority – as individuals and as families – by starting with small changes and building toward an ideal health goal. With a focus on personal and incremental change, My Heart. My Life. offers hands-on experiences and practical solutions to help people get physically active, eat

healthy and pass healthy habits on to future generations. By making small changes to take care of their hearts, Americans engaged in the My Heart. My Life. movement put themselves on a path to a longer, better life. The days’ event also included a morning health fair, kid’s zone, blood pressure screenings, entertainment by the Adelphi University college cheerleaders and dance team and The Long Island Conservatory and music by The S.I.E. band, Nico Padden and Rob Baione. The Long Island Heart Walk is presented nationally by Subway and Jenny Craig, presenting sponsor Flushing Bank, and Long Island businesses such as Astoria Savings Bank, Allstate, Geico, WinthropUniversity Hospital, Deloitte, Forest Labs, Hon. Thomas Gulotta,

J.H. Cohn LLP, MSC Industrial Supply Co., St. Joseph’s College and Stony Brook University Medical Center. Media Sponsors of the event were WBAB-FM 102.3, WBLI-FM 106.1 and Long Island Pulse Magazine. Thirty-nine percent of Americans think they are in ideal health, but fewer than 1 percent actually meet the American Heart Association’s criteria. The association is teaching people what it really means to be healthy, offering practical solutions to improve their lives and the lives of their families. To learn more about the My Heart. Legislator Tom Cilmi spent some time at the Lake Ronkonkoma Fall Festival this weekend, enjoyed a hot dog, bought some hot sauce, chatted with members of the Lake Ronkonkoma Civic, the Suffolk County Correction Officers Association, the Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce and the Ronkonkoma American Legion Post 155. He was then treated to a tour of the historic 1988 Fitz-

Greene Hallock Homestead, a three story historic home on Pond Road. Cilmi said, “Lake Ronkonkoma has a rich history and the Hallock Homestead is a great example. The home is preserved in its original condition and there’s a lot to explore. Walking through, you get a real sense of what life was like here in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The folks at the Lake Ronkonkoma

Historical Society really bring that back to life. A visit to the museum on Hawkins Avenue or the Homestead provides for a wonderful learning experience and a fun afternoon for the whole family.” Tours of the Hallock Homestead must be arranged with the Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society. Participants may have experienced personal or professional consequences of their substance use, or may have been arrested for a non-violent low-level offense that involved the use of alcohol and/or illegal substances. The group is also perfect for those who are awaiting placement into inpatient or outpatient chemical dependency treatment. The program is 100% confidential and open to all regardless of ability to pay. Start2Stop participants are required to abstain from any drug or alcohol use while they are enrolled in the program. Those who are unable to remain abstinent during the twelve weeks of sessions are counseled and referred for more intensive treatment. With a well-publicized opiate crisis gripping Long Island and a documented upswing in impaired driving and boating, LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds says support for Start2Stop comes at the perfect time. “I am grateful to Assemblyman Sweeney for helping us make this program more accessible to local residents before

their use of drugs and alcohol accelerates,” he said. “This proactive approach and timely intervention will help make Suffolk County a safer and healthier place.” “Long Island continues to experience a number of well-publicized tragedies due to substance abuse. The Start2Stop program helps participants get control of their substance abuse problem before it escalates into a tragedy. While we need strong laws to deal with the results of DWI and BWI incidents, it is far better to prevent those tragedies from happening in the first place. That’s what this grant is intended to do,” said Assemblyman Sweeney. For more information about Start2Stop, or any of LICADD’s other services, please call 631.979.1700 or visit www.licadd.org.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $20,000 grant from the NYS Office of Substance Abuse Services to support its addiction services in Suffolk County, thanks to the efforts of NYS Assemblyman Bob Sweeney. Specifically, the grant funds the expansion of LICADD’s Start2Stop program, which provides drug and alcohol information, solutionfocused counseling, peer support and treatment referrals to local residents of all ages. Start2Stop is a professionally facilitated support group that helps participants explore their substance abuse experiences and attitudes about drugs and alcohol, learn more about the biological/social and p s y c h o l o g i c a l consequences of use and understand the impact such use has had, and will have on their lives and relationships. The twelve week psycho-educational program is designed for individuals who have had some involvement with drug and/or alcohol use, but may not yet be ready to seek treatment or live a substance-free life.

Of Taboo Topics & Talking Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan They say that two of the most taboo topics are religion and politics, subjects that should be avoided at all costs when in mixed company. Before I had my own legitimate opinions on such matters, I have to admit that I never understood what the big deal was. Now I get it. Especially in this day and age, with the advent of social media and the ability to post all sorts of potentially controversial tweets, status updates, photos, videos, etc.… is it any wonder that tensions tend to build to the point of heated disagreements? One day you’re “friends” – the next you’re engaged in a bitter dispute over political ideals. Some things should simply be left for private discourse.

Personally, I have always felt that, as long as your opinion is well informed and based on some sort of intelligent foundation, there should really be no need to defend it. Believe what you believe; just don’t try to impose it upon others. That’s what the politicians are for. Those basic philosophies which make us different are precisely what make our society unique – and interesting. No need to change that. When things take a nasty turn – which they inevitably seem to – whether in the form of written discourse or verbal sparring, that’s when it has gone too far. A little healthy debate is fine, and should be encouraged even. We should all be open to other viewpoints – perhaps, in our own narrow-minded tunnel vision, we may have missed some-

thing valid and eye opening. But merely shoving your unsolicited opinions down someone else’s throat is not only unnecessary, but borders on disrespectful. Voting booths are private for a reason, as are many religious institutions and practices. No one should feel obligated to defend his/her beliefs, so long as they are founded in some sort of informed, grounded philosophy. And if they aren’t, if they are merely based on a handful of regurgitated talking points or hearsay – well then, why would you want to recruit someone so ignorant to your side anyway? Better they are left to their own devices. Simply my opinion. Take it or leave it. {This message was approved by Jamie Lynn Ryan.}

On Sunday, November 4th, from 1 to 3 p.m., Suffolk County Community College will host an Open House for prospective and accepted students at the following campus locations: Ammerman Campus in Selden Babylon Student Center Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood - Sagtikos Arts & Sciences Building Eastern Campus in Riverhead - Montaukett Learning Resource Center Faculty and administrators will be on hand to offer detailed information regarding the more than 70 degree programs of study and 30 certificate programs available at the College. Educational and transitional services information for Veterans will also be available at the Open House. Financial aid representatives will discuss the grants and loans process, as well as the many scholarships available at Suffolk. Members of the admissions staff will be in attendance to guide students and parents through the admissions process and to answer questions. The Open House program also includes useful information for recently-accepted students, who will have the opportunity to learn more about placement testing, academic advisement and financial aid. “Whether you have already been accepted to Suffolk County Community College or are a prospective student, making a personal visit to a campus is critical to the college decision making process,” said Joanne E. Braxton, Suffolk’s Dean of Enrollment. “We welcome students and their families to join us at our upcoming Open House, where they will find a dynamic overview of the academic programs and student support services available at the College. They will also have the opportunity to tour the campus with student guides, who are available to answer questions based upon their own experience as students.” In light of the increased demand for access to community colleges, the best way to secure admission to Suffolk County Community College for the spring 2013 semester is to attend Open House and apply for admission early. The Ammerman Campus in Selden is located on Nicholls Road, north of Exit 62 of the LIE. The Michael J. Grant Campus is located on Wicks Road, south of Exit 53 of the LIE in Brentwood. The Eastern Campus is located on County Road 51, three miles south of the County’s Riverhead Center. Boat Burning

For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com

The Long Island Maritime Museum recently announced that their 22nd Annual Boat Burning will take place on Friday, October 26th from 5 to 9 p.m. “This unique annual event has become a fall tradition in our

community,” said the Museum’s Executive Director Steve Jones. This attractive boat, constructed by volunteers at the M u s e u m ’ s Moonbeam/Grooms Boat Shop, is extremely versatile in that it can be utilized either as a sail boat or a row boat. Raffle tickets are $5.00 a piece or (5) for $20.00 and can be purchased right up until the time of the drawing. Tickets are also available for purchase prior to the event. Attendees are encouraged to wear

Halloween costumes. In addition to live music, there will be a featured performance by special guests at 5:30 p.m. The Long Island Maritime Museum, which operates under a license agreement with Suffolk County Parks, serves to preserve Long Island's maritime history and heritage for educational purposes.

Run For Autism Runaway Success Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, hosted its DDI Walk and Motorcycle Run for Autism, on September 23rd at the Holtsville Ecology Center. DDI raise over $35,000 to help fund the vital programs and services DDI provides to over 5,000 families served by their educational and residential programs, adult day training and medical services. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said CoChairmen of the event Brian Brunjes and Charlie Hudson. “This year we not only met that goal, but

we exceeded it. It is inspiring to see the generosity of a community come together and lend themselves to help benefit thousands of Long Islanders.” Hundreds of Long Islanders came out for the scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County's Holtsville Ecology Park followed by a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more. This year event also included a Motorcycle run sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. U.S. Olympian and Sachem alum Maria Michta helped kick the walk off as the Grand Marshall. Maria recently competed in the women’s 20K race walk event at the summer

games in London. “I am honored to be invited to DDI’s Walk and Motorcycle Run as the Grand Marshall,” stated Maria. “As an athlete, DDI’s walk presents a wonderful opportunity to work out while also giving back to the community. I would like to thank DDI for this opportunity as well as everyone in attendance for their support. ASDs are unfortunately all too common and while scientists and doctors continue to search for answers it is important that we as a community do our part to support those families who struggle with the frustrating realties of these disorders on a daily basis.”

Eisenhower Park was filled with the laughter of more than 700 pediatric cancer survivors and family members who gathered for the inaugural Les Nelkin Pediatric Cancer Survivors’ Day hosted by Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) of New York. They cheered as the event’s keynote speaker, New York Giants’ linebacker Mark Herzlich talked about his own successful battle with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. When he was diagnosed at age 21 before starting his senior year at Boston College, Mr. Herzlich was told that he would not be able to play football again and may never run again. “I decided that I wasn’t going to let cancer beat me,” Mr. Herzlich told fellow survivors. His dream of playing football pushed him to not just be a survivor, but to “be a thriver.” A three-year cancer survivor who won a Super Bowl ring with the Giants in February during his rookie season, he encouraged attendees to “fulfill your dreams.” The event, made possible by the support of Ruth and Harold Nelkin as a way to honor the memory of their son, Les, attracted former child cancer patients of all ages. Community Head Start to modify and enhance its programs and to plan services that meet the needs of the community. This year’s community assessment found that families are struggling in suburbia in the wake of the recession taht began in 2007. The county is e x p e r i e n c i n g unprecedented rates of poverty, home f o r e c l o s u r e s , unemployment and high demand for food stamps,

emergency housing and Medicaid. In addition, the Hispanic/Latino population continues to grow, increasing the need for access to programs for English language learners. Suffolk County also reports an increase in the child abuse and maltreatment reports in Suffolk County; perhaps a reflection of economic stress on families and the need for support services. A complete report of the annual community

assessment can be found on the program’s website: www.childrenscommunity hs.org. The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Starts (CCHS), with centers in Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma, provides services for families residing in 13 school districts in Central Suffolk County. Families are eligible based on household incomes that are below the federal

poverty line. Homeless and foster children, and children with disabilities, are also eligible. In addition to a high-quality and structured classroom experience, children benefit from health and nutrition services, family involvement, parent training and strong relationships with local school districts, thus aiding their transition to Kindergarten. According to the 2009 Long Island Index

research report prepared by the Rauch Foundation, early childhood education “prepares children for school, and when provided in a high quality program, it can reduce grade repetition, drop out rates and juvenile delinquency.” The report further explains that high quality programs can lower future costs that the public school would otherwise assume.

and Saturday until 2 p.m. Please help make the 19th Annual Walk-Along for Lupus a milestone to remember. The Lupus Alliance of America LIQ Affiliate is the only resource on Long Island for those in the area who have lupus. Your donations to the WalkAlong for Lupus go directly to helping your loved ones, friends and neighbors who have been diagnosed and

need support, education, financial assistance and more. Donate or register to walk today! Volunteers are always needed as well; please call the office for more informaiton at 516.783.3370 or e-mail the Lupus Alliance, info@lupusliqueens.org.

Walk-Along For Lupus On Sunday, October 21st, in Eisenhower Park, Field #6, over 2,000 people will bring friends, family and co-workers and Walk-Along for Lupus! Join Greg-T from Z-100, enjoy live music, have your face painted, get your picture taken with the USA Skateasauras and take home some great giveaways, all whil raising funds to support those in

need in the Long Island/Queens area that have lupus, as well as novel research into the cause and hopefully, one day, the cure! To register to be a walker at this event, visit www.firstgiving.com/lupusl iqueens, where you can register and collect donations online. Why not utilize those friends you’ve made on Facebook, Twitter and Linked In, as well as

those out-of-town family members, by collecting donations online while helping those that suffer from lupus; a chronic, lifethreatening disease that has no known cure. You can download widgets for your social networking pages and e-mail signatures, and this year you can also post a YouTube video on your fundraising page describing why you Walk-Along for

Lupus. If the internet is not for you, you can still collect donation with a Walk-Along envelope. Just call 1.800.850.9000 and ask for a walk packet to be sent to your home. You can also pre-register in person at the Bellmore office the week of October 15th. Extended office hours that week include Thursday until 8 p.m., Friday until 9 p.m.
