While playing for the Braves in 1928 he participated in a spring training game in Florida against the New York Yankees, where he struck out not only respected outfielder Bob Meusel, but also the infamous Babe Ruth. Goldsmith played in the minors until the fall of 1929 when he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, but pitched just twice for the team before retiring as a player. In retirement he spent over three decades coaching the aseball and basketball teams at his alma mater, Southold High School, winning a large number of regional and league championships. The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce that it will host an exhibition featuring photographs from the early baseball career of Harold E. Goldsmith (18981985), one of Southold’s only professional baseball players. The exhibition, entitled ‘Hal Goldsmith: Early Baseball Photographs, 1916-1929’ will be held at the Society’s exhibition building, The Reichert Family Center, in the Cosden Price Gallery. A right-handed pitcher from Peconic, Long Island, Harold ‘Hal’ Goldsmith (1898-1985) was a St. Lawrence University graduate, and spent five years in the minor leagues before getting the call to join the Boston Braves in June of 1926. Some of the minor league teams he played for include the New Orleans Pelicans (1921), the Saginaw Aces (1922), the Providence Grays

including miniature wooden figures shaped to resemble the Queen’s Guard from Great Britain, replicas of France’s Eiffel Tower made of edible ingredients and colorful Faberge eggs from Russia. Each time the students completed a craft, they received a stamp in their “passports,” which they proudly displayed while touring the art exhibit showcasing the many

different creations. “While working on the exhibit, each day the students arrived eager to find out what country we would be learning about,” said Marie Boettcher, Minnesauke’s SACC supervisor. “During SACC we work to engage students in educationally enriching experiences as well as provide after-school support for homework activities.”

Back To Basics By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The more I drive, the more I realize how many truly incompetent motorists there are out there. Let’s start with the basics. If you come out to find snow accumulated on the roof of your car, CLEAN IT OFF. Those of us who have the misfortune of driving behind you would greatly appreciate it. I know you think you’re saving time, but honestly, they make rear windows transparent for a reason…you know, just in case you want to take a quick peek back there every now and then. Once on the road, let’s review a few pointers… Shoulders of the road were made for the purpose of easing into and out of traffic while merging. Trust me, it’s a much better alternative than

practically standing on your brakes while in the right traffic lane as you suddenly realize your exit is approaching – oh, in 3 feet or so. Same goes for merging onto a major highway or parkway. Do not assume that the lane is clear for you to simply sail right through at 60 mph. There are occasionally, you know, other vehicles already inhabiting that space. Then there are those scenarios that are simply so bizarre, they are beyond words. A few weeks ago, I was stopped at a light on the Service Road of the LIE. As I waited in the left hand turning lane, a truck opposite me in the right hand lane, I noticed a car approach in the middle lane, “driven” by a man staring intently at the map spread across his steering wheel. Suddenly, he apparently

decided that he needed to be somewhere else, and proceeded to back up on the Service Road and cut his wheel, angling his car toward this aforementioned truck in the right lane…all the while, never shifting his gaze from the map. With a mix of horror and amusement, I watched the scene unfold. I glanced at the truck driver, to see him absolutely hysterical with laughter, shaking his head in amazement. The light turned green at that point, spurring me to get out of there before witnessing Act II of this particular play. No telling what the next move might have been! Let’s all focus people. And not on our maps, please. The road. Only the road. And for goodness sake, invest in a snowbrush.

The Salute To Senior Service program, sponsored by Home Instead, Inc., the franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care network, honors the contributions of adults 65 and older who give at least 15 hours a month of volunteer service to their favorite causes. Nominations for outstanding senior volunteers will be accepted between February 1st and March 31st, 2013. State winners then will be selected by popular vote at SalutetoSeniorService. com. Online voting will take place from April 15th to April 30th, 2013. From those state winners, a panel of senior care experts will pick the national Salute to Senior Service honoree. Home Instead, Inc. will donate $500 to each of the state winners’ favorite nonprofit organizations and their stories will be posted on the Salute to Senior Service Wall of Fame. In addition, $5,000 will be donated to the national winner’s nonprofit charity of choice. “We all know seniors who do so much for our community,” said Jeff Huber, president, Home Instead, Inc. “These silent heroes give selflessly, expecting nothing in return. And yet, their contributions often make a difference not only to the organizations they serve, but in changing how the public views growing older.” Senior care professionals and those who work at hospitals, senior care facilities and other places where seniors volunteer are encouraged to nominate older adults. So, too, are family caregivers and the adult children of aging parents. Older adults also may self-nominate. To complete and submit a nomination form online for a senior age 65 or older who volunteers at least 15 hours a month, and to view the contest’s official rules, visit SalutetoSeniorService. com. Completed nomination forms also can be mailed to Salute to Senior Service, P.O. Box 285, Bellevue, NE 68005.

My babies are growing up What they used to love me doing Is just embarrassing now My little boy walks down the hall From a distance, all I see is his back Then suddenly, he turns to see if I’m still there And gives me a wave My heart melts ‘Cause his big sisters They don’t look back anymore She doesn’t look back I guess it’s okay It means she’s growing up In every sense of the way Sometimes those moments get lost Day to day But when my little guy looked back It reminded me of so many yesterdays I drop her off to her hourly job She tells me not to stop in front It’s too embarrassing Getting a lift from my mom She scurries in through the door She doesn’t look back anymore My baby is getting ready to dance Her tutu and make-up on I used to walk her backstage And she’d glance and I’d give her a wink You’re going to do great Don’t be scared Just look straight ahead Don’t look at the floor Now, she doesn’t look back anymore They say you have to let go Cut those apron strings

No one told me the pain that would bring ‘Cause she doesn’t look back anymore She packed her bags And we flew and flew A thousand miles later We were at her new school I tried to be strong And decorated her dorm I knew soon It wouldn’t be long To say our goodbyes I didn’t want to ruin her excitement Being on her own for the first time I put on my shades To hide my tears I could feel her stare As I drove away The pain is too great Nothing will be the same as before I’ve had to learn To not look back anymore Hold on to those moments When their sweet little eyes Search for you in a crowd

Science Olympiad

Looking to build upon their tradition of excellence, Ward Melville High School’s Science Olympiad team has once again qualified to compete at the state level of the national science contest. During this winter’s Eastern Long Island Regional Science tournament, Ward Melville’s varsity team was ranked first with a team score of 37, far out-beating their competitors, as the second-place team finished with a score of 103. The contest, which includes a variety of events covering higher-thinking science topics, ranks teams on a decreasing scale, making lower combined totals more desirable. “The success of these students is a clear reflection of their passion and continued drive,” stated teacher Stephen Malusa, who along with fellow teacher Mark Suesser coaches the team and receives help from other science and technology department educators. “Many of the team members were involved in Science Olympiad from an early age, having participated in the district’s junior high teams, and the experience they gained there has helped them dominate during both regional and state contests. I am very proud of each of them.” During the contests, teams compete in 18 of the program’s 24 events, which span such topics as physics, chemistry, earth science, biology and

technology. At regionals, 65 students making up four teams represented Ward Melville. In addition to the varsity team’s firstplace win, the remaining teams were ranked fourth, fifth, and 11th during the competition, and combined, all four teams received a total of 41 medals. From the regional contest, the top six teams are selected to advance to states; however, only one team from each school is eligible to move on – otherwise, three of the six teams representing Long Island would have been from Ward Melville. The focus of the Science Olympiads is to promote excitement and enthusiasm in science through annual regional, state and national competitions. Frequently, preparation for these events provides enrichment well beyond the traditional science curriculum. Students work cooperatively with their peers while learning science technology skills. In the past three years, Ward Melville’s team has been ranked second in the state contest and 14th (2010), 18th (2011) and 16th (2012) in the National Science Olympiad competitions. The following students will represent Ward Melville during the state Science Olympiad competition: Justin Cooper Niyati Desai* Alex Frenkel Gary Ge Rachel Gutman** Luran He

During the videoconference, which was run with a flight

director at Mission Control from the Challenger Learning Center at Wheeling Jesuit University, the students worked in five planet teams to analyze and compute answers to a variety of mathematical questions. By examining different variables and making predictions, including how much food, oxygen and water would be needed for the mission, the fifth-graders were able to successfully accomplish the rescue. In addition to tying into the school’s math and science curricula, the activity also allowed students to

practice their reading skills, think critically and logically, and learn how to communicate effectively with teammates. “Today’s mission was a true complement to our classroom studies on the solar system,” stated teacher Linda Earls, who noted that in addition to reading about the subject, each student completed a project about one of the system’s planets. “The e-missions are wonderful hands-on opportunities in which the students can apply the material they read in their textbooks to a real-world event.”

WordMasters Challenge

Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School fourth and fifth-grade GATES students have been learning select vocabulary words backwards, forwards, in and out as part of their participation in the WordMasters Challenge, a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually. Throughout the year, the Rocky Point students train with their teacher Donna Trapani for the competition’s three meets. “The contests help students develop advanced language skills. Students are required to understand not only the meaning of the new vocabulary words, but also the various uses of each word as well as the parts of speech,” stated Ms. Trapani, who equated the contests’ problems with those of the SAT. “Through our preparations, the students

build critical-thinking skills and challenge their minds so that during the contests, they can do more than just define the words – they can dissect them and apply their meaning to the problem at hand.” Competing in the difficult Blue Division of the WordMasters Challenge, JAE fourthgrader Ashlynne Xavier earned a perfect score during the contest’s first meet. Nationally, only 31 fourth-graders achieved a perfect score. During that meet, JAE students Trevor Hall, Molly Infranco and Molly Lambert were also commended for achieving outstanding results. The students will compete in two more meets this year; the second will focus on the 25 words from the first meet as well as 25 new words, and the third will be a cumulative challenge on the 50 previous words and 25 new items.

The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogysolving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight. They are particularly wellsuited to children who are motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.

his family, the Civil Air Patrol, and our entire community proud. I wish him continued success in the future.” Thor also earned the Billy Mitchell Award making him a commissioned officer at 2nd Lieutenant.

SHOOTING HOOPS - Drumming up excitement for the school’s upcoming headto-head basketball tournament, Big J from the Harlem Wizards visited with students at Minnesauke Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District to speak about healthy eating and to demonstrate a few of the team’s famous basketball tricks. The community is invited to attend a fun-filled night of trick hoops and alley-oops on Tuesday, March 19th at 6:30 p.m. at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School to cheer on the Minnesauke AllSTARS. Many Ways To Celebrate Minnesauke Elementary School students celebrated the milestone 100th day of school this February through literary, mathematical and character education-driven events. The building’s entire first grade marked the momentous occasion by completing 100 acts

of kindness – whether helping younger siblings, assisting with chores around the home or being “caught” as respectful bus riders, the students worked to perpetuate kindness. Each student detailed their kind act on a paper heart and proudly showcased their gesture on a gradelevel bulletin board in the

school. Additional classroom celebrations focused on reading stories centered around the number 100, various counting exercises, completing written and artistic assignments about what the students will be like at the age of 100, and fashioning projects made of 100 items.

Cadet Of The Year

During the weeklong unit, students in grades K-6 worked with the trained circus professionals and perfected the skills necessary to perform a number of circus tricks. As a conclusion to the school’s participation in the project, sixth-graders conducted an evening circus performance for their family and friends. The students took to the

Rocky Point High School 10th-grade wrestling standout Thomas Dutton capped off this year’s varsity wrestling season with not only a 50-4 record, but also his first All-State athletic honor. After a tough match against the state’s top wrestlers, Thomas placed fourth during this year’s All-State championship. record this year and an eighth-place ranking in New York State. “His presence has helped others elevate their game to an elite level, and that’s what makes him so special. They say you can tell someone is an MVP when they make those around them better; Thomas Dutton is certainly an MVP in Rocky Point because of who he is both on and off the mat.”

On behalf of the Port Jefferson Union Free School District, Plant Facilities Administrator Fred Koelbel is pleased to announce that Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, Port Jefferson Middle School and Edna Louise Spear Elementary School have all earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star certification. This signifies that their buildings perform in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meet strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA. To earn the Energy Star certification, Port Jefferson UFSD took the following actions: • Worked with LIPA to conduct a districtwide energy audit. • Partnered with the energy conservation company Cenergistic to implement a revenueneutral Energy Conservation Program. • Established and maintained target building temperatures for both the school day and after hours. • Turned off unnecessary lights and utilized available daylight. • Utilized ARRA grants to implement $337,000 in lighting upgrades, replacement and controls, at no cost to the district. • Utilized a

$400,000 ARRA grant to install two photovoltaic systems, a 48-kilowatt system on the roof of Edna Louise Spear Elementary School and a 12-kilowatt system on the roof of the maintenance building adjacent to the Scraggy Fields, at no cost to the district. • Installed highefficiency pumps. “These steps would not have been possible without the dedication of energy manager Peter Esposito, who spearheaded Cenergistic’s Energy Conservation Program, high school/middle school head custodian Joan Lyons and her staff, elementary head custodian Gary Kenyon and his staff, and the students and staff of the Port Jefferson UFSD,” said Koelbel. As for the district’s c o l l a b o r a t i o n with Cenergistic, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert said, “Our partnership [with Cenergistic] has been tremendously beneficial. The company’s expertise, training and support have completely changed our culture from one of unintentional energy waste to intentional energy savings. As a result, we have saved money by reducing consumption and we have demonstrated good stewardship of the environment. We have

a new culture that will benefit Port Jefferson UFSD for years to come.” While the district has finished the paid contract term of its program and no longer shares savings with Cenergistic, the company’s service to Port Jefferson UFSD will continue on an as-needed basis to help ensure that the program continues to build on its 22 percent reduction in energy consumption and a cost avoidance of over $419,000 through September 2012. Cenergestic consultants will continue to work with the system on conservation techniques and data analysis as requested, providing ongoing training and support free of charge. “Port Jefferson UFSD has successfully implemented Cenergistic’s organizational behaviorbased approach to energy conservation,” said Dr. William S. Spears, chairman and founder of Cenergistic. “The leadership, along with other administration, faculty and staff members, deserves recognition for their commitment to being good stewards of taxpayers’ dollars and the environment. By sustaining the program, Port Jefferson UFSD will continue to save money for the benefit of students and taxpayers.”

Registration for Camp Zoo is currently underway, marking the beginning of its eighth year as a unique program that provides children with a hands-on educational experience with nature. To see the schedule of upcoming events, visit www. longislandgamefarm.com. “We can’t wait to open for our 44th season. Every year gets better and better as we educate our guests about the animal world and nature. I have the privilege of watching thousands of students experience firsthand what they learn in books from the classroom.

One of our greatest joys is when families throughout the region or visiting Long Island get to enjoy the park and spend quality time together. Bringing people together — what could be better? It is sure to be our best season yet,” said Diane Novak, Co-Owner and President of the Long Island Game Farm. One of the best times of the year to visit the Game Farm is early spring, when many of the animals have given birth to newborns. The Game Farm is expecting the births of new animals. “Once you walk into the Game Farm, take in the beauty of springtime and you may witness the magic of birth,” said Ms. Novak. Suffolk Zone 6 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday March 13, 2013

This year, Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrates its 44th season with its grand opening on March 23rd. The park will be open Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the month of April. From May 1st to May 21st, the Game Farm will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. From alligators to zebra and scores of animals in between, the Long Island Game Farm has many interactive areas where guests can touch and, unlike most zoos, actually feed the animals! The first weekend at the Game Farm kicks off with “Nature Nick’s Animal Adventures.” Each show features 10 to 12 animals from all corners of the world, many of them rare and exotic. CHARITY CHAMPIONS - Students at Comsewogue High School were recently recognized for their participation in the MSG Varsity/Optimum Power to Learn Charity Champions program that encourages students to raise funds for a charity of their choice. The school was presented with $1,000 to be donated to Friends of Karen, a non-profit that supports critically ill children and their families. The school also received $500 for furtherance of the students’ planned charitable activities. Carry-On Made Easier

(NAPSI)-Doing a little homework before you travel could save you time at the airport. For instance, visiting www.TSA.gov, the Transportation Security Administration’s Web site, can help you learn what

items can be packed in carry-on and which are best left in checked suitcases. You can also learn size requirements for toiletries that are allowed on planes and then find properly sized items in stores. As a final tip, remember

that all carry-on gels, liquids and aerosols need to be placed in a 1-quart, single zip-top, clear plastic bag. For more information and tips, visit www.shave. com.
