Suffolk County Community College Adjunct Instructor of Philosophy, Thomas Curtin, was recently announced as the winner of the 2013 Colin and Ailsa Turbayne International Berkeley Essay Prize Competition for his essay Berkeley’s Conception of Causal Power. Essays were required to be new and unpublished, written in English and not exceed 5,000 words in length. All references to Berkeley were directed to be to Luce/Jessop, and a MLA or similar standard for notes was followed. Submissions were blind reviewed and judged by members of a review board selected by the Department of Philosophy at the University of Rochester. One winner was selected. Some years before their deaths, Professor and Mrs. Colin Turbayne established an International Berkeley Essay Prize competition in cooperation with the Philosophy Department

at the University of Rochester. A highly popular teacher of philosophy, the late Professor Turbayne is often described by former students as a “consummate teacher” who made a lasting impression on them. He was also one of the most prolific and influential scholars of George Berkeley, the 18th Century Irish philosopher. Mr. Berkeley is perhaps best known as the author of the classic treatise, The Myth of Metaphor, first published by Yale University Press in 1962. Professor Turbayne’s devotion to advancing understanding of Berkeley is reflected in the numerous articles he authored, his producing six major editions of Berkeley’s works, and the creation and funding of the International Berkeley Essay Prize. Thomas Curtin is a recent Ph.D. graduate from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He has a Masters of Arts

in Philosophy from University of London, Birkbeck College and a Bachelors of Arts in Philosophy from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He specializes in the history of modern philosophy and the philosophy of religion, especially 18th century philosophy of religion. Curtin is currently an Adjunct Instructor in the Ammerman Campus philosophy department, having started teaching at Suffolk County Community College in the spring 2012 semester. Dr. Lowell Kleiman, Academic Chair for Suffolk County Community College’s Philosophy Department said, “On behalf of the department, we would like to congratulate Tom on receiving this prestigious and significant award. We are fortunate to have him in our department and gain insights from his hard work, talents and skills.”

Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Perception is everything. Reality is secondary. Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn’t it? And yet, how often do we form our opinions of someone based solely upon an initial, sometimes completely skewed, impression? Feel vs. facts. Sometimes, a gut feeling is the right one. Other times, more careful consideration is needed. But how to determine the difference…that is the question. I have often been told that I form opinions about others far too quickly, leaving little room for the actual process of becoming acquainted. It’s basically black and white, no

shades of gray along the way. Not a great way to be, I’ll be the first to admit; especially because, what happens when the tables are turned and someone makes the exact same snap judgment about you? Not a fair assessment, is it? I’m not sure what changed over the years. I don’t think I was always like this. But lately, my level of impatience and intolerance has grown by leaps and bounds. I’d like to think it all started with my experiences with various members of the fast food industry and their general level of incompetence at the drive-thru. But perhaps that was just the trigger. In any case, I do take exception when others exhibit

the same level of annoyance without taking the time to truly get to know me. This has caused me to take a step back and reevaluate others’ perceptions of me lately. What’s that they say about never judging a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? True words indeed. Perhaps we should all take that step back and not rush to judge. Sure, some initial impressions are spot on – but what harm does it do to take a little extra time to either confirm or refute that gut feeling? None, so far as I can tell. And who knows, you might just find a new friend in the process.

New Weather Station “This is a great extension to our science unit on weather,” said Wells, who teaches the second grade. “The children have learned about states of matter, the water cycle, clouds, rainbows, types of storms and tools meteorologists use to generate a forecast.” The weather station is available for use to all classes, and student “weather reporters” are encouraged to participate

regularly by reading information off the station to relay to their classmates. “The children now have a deep understanding of the information provided by the weather station,” Wells continued. “We analyze the weather at the end of each week and also at the end of the month. They have learned a great deal and have enjoyed being meteorologists.”

254409N0320

Students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School have been taking a handson approach to learning about the weather using their new wireless weather station equipment. The purchase of the station was made possible with grant money from the Royal Educational Foundation awarded to the district as a result of a grant application submitted by teacher Darlene Wells.

Safety Sally

Try it now. PRICES VALID FEBRUARY 21 - MARCH 27, 2013

MARCH 7th - 13th ONLY!

FEB. 21st - MARCH 6th ONLY! When a school bus comes to a stop and the red lights begin to blink, that means that the bus is going to discharge students. It also means that cars are supposed to stop. “Supposed is the operative word because sometimes they don’t. It is very important for students in Pre-K through 6th grade to know how to protect themselves when crossing in front of a school bus, and how to keep themselves and others safe while riding on a school bus. The Eastern Suffolk BOCES School Bus Safety Mobile Classroom presented by certified teacher Kay Heidt aka “Safety Sally is an innovative way to teach students tips on how to make their trips safe. The Mobile Safety Classroom is a state-ofthe-art school bus. The presentation included boarding and exiting the bus, safety rules, behavior and hazards, the student’s

role, bus stop behavior while waiting for the bus, practicing crossing in front of the bus, a video on bus safety, and reinforcement materials for each student. Reba Mueller, a Rocky Point UFSD student in the ECE program who was chosen to be “lead teacher for the day said, “My responsibility today is to get the children ready for the presentation. We began with singing “The Wheels on the Bus song and looking at picture books that relate to school buses. Reba Mueller, Rocky Point UFSD, wears a yellow smock indicating that she is the lead teacher for the day. Reba guides the students in song to prepare them for the “Safety Sally presentation. Ms. Havekotte said, “Most of the preschoolers have never been on a bus so this is an adventure for them and an important learning experience climbing up the stairs, holding onto the railing,

walking 10 steps from the front of the bus before crossing the street, and making eye contact with the bus driver. It’s a lot to take in for 3 and 4-year-old children. The New York State Department of Education (NYSED) requires that all public, non-public and charter schools, including Pre-K and Early Intervention sites, conduct at least three bus safety drills per school year. SafeNY and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (NYS-GTSC) strives to keep students safe through “Operation Safe Stop Education and Enforcement Day. On Thursday, April 18th law enforcement officers around the state will board school buses or will be patrolling in marked and unmarked units on selected bus routes that have a history of illegal passing complaints. Police will issue tickets to drivers who pass stopped school buses.

Sessions Raise Funds

In an effort to raise funds for the orphaned companion animals in need at Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc., Long Island psychic Janet Russell held two “Spiritual Communication sessions at Harbor Crab Restaurant & Marina in Patchogue on March 9th. Ms. Russell is a psychic/ medium/spiritual advisor and a television host on one of New York’s top cable access shows, Beyond the

Unexplained. She has also been featured on programs such as Paranormal State and Haunted NY. Additionally, Ms. Russell has been mentioned in several books and worked with the police on the infamous Katie Beers’ kidnapping case, in which a nine-year-old girl was miraculously found alive after having gone missing for 17 days. As a person with a gift, Ms. Russell feels compelled to help others. She has

always felt a special connection with animals and to that end, has partnered several times with Save-A-Pet, in order to help raise funds for the shelter. In addition to the sessions, there was a 50/50 raffle and raffles for individual gift baskets. For more information, please contact Save-A-Pet at 631.473.6333, or visit www.saveapetli.org.

Humvee Lesson

Members of the Army National Guard, Specialist First Class (SFC) Lionel Worrell, Sergeant (SGT) Amanda Cutler, and SFC Rafael Rodriguez, Jr., visited the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Ward Career and Technical Center (WCTC) in Riverhead with a military HUMVEE. “This is made possible via the National Guard HUMVEE School Program,” said New York Army National Guard Education Liaison Catherine Galli. “The program is free and it gives the students an upclose and personal look at the HUMVEE.”

For the students enrolled in the ESBOCES Automotive Technology Program at WCTC, this presentation can be very beneficial to their future. ESBOCES Auto Tech Teacher Mike O’Hara said, “The students typically work on personal or civilian vehicles. For them to see first-hand the technology and engineering of this vehicle and to learn personally from members of the Army National Guard how the vehicle is utilized and the mechanics of the vehicle, is invaluable.” Students were given a copy of the Army National Guard Preventive

Maintenance Checks and Services Checklist (PMCS) and told to use it to examine the HUMVEE. The checklist could be used on personal vehicles as well, to ensure that they are always in proper working order. SGT Cutler said, “It feels good to give back to the community. We are civilians and members of the Army National Guard. The presentation also informs the students how the Guard uses the HUMVEE and implements them into the community as first responders during a disaster.”

Liberty Award Presented

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle presented a New York State Liberty Award to Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance Paramedic Michael Presta today for his role in saving the life of a child car accident victim on December 12th, 2011. “Michael Presta saved the life of a young child,” Senator LaValle said. “For his life saving actions, I present him with a New York State Liberty Award.” Paramedic Lieutenant Michael Presta was leaving home and on his way to work at the Ambulance

Company when he came upon a multi vehicle accident at Pine Rd. and County Rd. 83 in Coram. After pulling over to assist, he found a mother in the front seat of a vehicle, dazed, and a small child slumped over in the car’s back seat. Presta quickly realized something was wrong with the child and that she was not breathing and in cardiac arrest.. Presta removed the child from the car and began life saving measures by performing CPR and stabilizing procedures. The child

regained a pulse and began to breathe again. The child was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital and after extensive rehabilitation has fully recovered. The New York State Liberty Award is one of the highest civilian honors that New Yorker’s can receive. The Liberty Award was created in 2000 and is presented to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic or humanitarian acts and achievements on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers.

Advancing To Worlds

Currently in their inaugural year, the Rocky Point Middle School Radical Robotix team has already made a name for themselves in two ways: by placing second in their first-ever regional competition, and more recently, by being named winners in the Long Island FIRST Lego League Championship. As Champion’s Award winners, the team has qualified to spotlight their work on an international stage during the FIRST Lego League World Festival in St. Louis, Mo. this spring. During this contest, the team will compete against 89 teams from 47 countries. “It’s remarkable how far this talented team has come since their inception in September,” stated coach Mark Moorman. “We have a very talented and dedicated group of young men and women. The prospect of competing in St. Louis is daunting yet exciting. The students will get to interact with other students from around the world. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that they will never forget. I couldn’t be more proud!” During their most recent competition, the students were awarded a range of points based on their robot’s performance, design and programming as well as their overall presentation and teamwork. As the theme for this year’s contest was “Senior Solutions,” the students’

robot was charged with traveling through a complex obstacle course beset with “senior” problems – only on a simpler scale and more directly related to the robot’s abilities. For example, the robot needed to “lift weights” and collect “medicine bottles” constructed of lightweight Legos using different attachments. In addition to their fieldwork, the students were also tasked with identifying a problem that an elderly person might experience and developing a solution for it. For their presentation, the students created a concept they called the “Medi-Watch,” a wrist monitor that wirelessly communicates with a countertop appliance to automatically dispense a person’s medication, tracks vital signs and makes alert calls to emergency responders when necessary. Seeking some real-world experience with this topic, prior to the most recent contest, the students visited with residents at the Setauket-based Jefferson’s Ferry, a Lifecare Retirement Community serving seniors aged 62 and older. The students shared information about their creation and received positive input about the device from the independent living residents in attendance. Speaking to where the “Medi-Watch” concept came from, seventh-grader Kyle Markland noted,

“It was just one small, simple idea from one team member that evolved over time into what we ultimately presented.” The seniors of Jefferson’s Ferry were highly impressed with the students’ project and voiced their hopes for the team to make it to the FIRST Lego League World Festival in St. Louis, Mo. In addition to Coach Moorman, the team, which is comprised of students in grades 6-8, is advised by teacher Dorothy Burns with the assistance of parent volunteer Dr. Chris Pinkenburg. The team has been meeting twice a week since the fall to work on their robotic prototypes, learn about the intricacies of building a Lego robot, and learn how to program its corresponding computer chip.

Math Exploration

Eighth-grade students in Matt Garofola’s math class at Port Jefferson Middle School have been working on an activity based on the concept of finding the slope of a line. As part of their challenge, students set out around the school building to measure staircases to find the steepest and shallowest ones. The activity

demonstrated the implementation of the new Common Core State Standards and highlighted a high level of student engagement. “Students needed to apply their knowledge to a real-life situation, requiring them to engage in the new standards of mathematical practice,” said Garofola. Enthusiasm for the

activity led to the creation of a contest to find the steepest and shallowest staircases outside of school. Students Svenya Drees and David Moir were the winners, finding the shallowest and steepest staircases in their basement and backyard, respectively.

The mass was celebrated by the Most Reverend William Murphy, Bishop of Rockville Centre, who expressed thanks for the century of compassionate care made possible at Mercy by the hard work and dedication of not only the hospital’s physicians, nurses and support staff, but also The Friends of Mercy and the Council of Leagues

auxiliary organizations, community residents and the continuing inspiration provided by the members of the founding Congregation. Among those in attendance were six leaders of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) on Long Island in recognition of Mercy’s Century of Compassionate Caring and its witness to Catholic health care.

prevent Type 1 diabetes. “Justin is the soul behind the event,” said Student Organization adviser Sarah Ogden. “He started this fundraiser last year in honor of his sister, a 10thgrader, who has juvenile diabetes.” Nine teams of 10 students competed for the coveted championship trophy, which was won by team T1D (Type 1 diabetes) for the second year in a row. The night ended with

a game of staff and parents versus the winning team in which T1D was also victorious. “This event is the best part of the year by far,” said Justin. “Every student loves to participate, and we raise a lot of money and awareness, too.” In attendance were teachers, administrators and parents, all there to support and cheer on the teams.

Drops For Relief Even though the students do not yet meet the criteria for personally donating, Rocky Point Middle School sixth- and seventh-grade student government and Community Service Club members recently helped organize a school blood

Based on selection criteria, 15 Rocky Point Middle School sixth-grade students were invited to take part in the building’s 15-week after-school GATES program and delve into the field of science exploration. Working with adviser Audra Hallock, the students participated in a 10-week Open Space Stewardship Program through Brookhaven National Laboratory and completed a five-week engineering study. During the field study in the Pine Barrens located behind the middle school, the students collected soil samples and studied land plots in order to learn

about this wilderness area. The students will be using their compiled research to create a presentation on the natural land for BNL in June. As part of their engineering study, the sixth-graders received a hands-on lesson about buoyancy when they worked in teams to create remote-operated vehicles. Using PVC piping and various electronic equipment, the groups developed several underwater ROVs, which they launched into Mill Pond in Yaphank. After testing them in the classroom, the students submerged and deployed

their final products into the pond, and using underwater sensors and cameras, navigated their vehicles through the murky waters to complete several tasks. “This program enabled me to learn about different aspects of science and how they relate to everyday life,” stated student Paul Leheste, who equated buoyancy to a car’s shock absorber. “My favorite part was making the ROV. I’m really interested in the engineering part of the project, as I really enjoy building and creating different things.”

beginning of a worthwhile and meaningful experience – for both the child and your family,” says Jenny Morgenthau, Executive Director of The Fresh Air Fund. “This year, we are looking for new host families in Western Suffolk County, NY to celebrate our 137thsummer and give children a chance to run barefoot through the grass or gaze at the starfilled skies.” Volunteers simply want to share what they have with city children and introduce them to the joys of suburban or country life. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money or do anything fancy. The children can just play in the backyard and enjoy just being kids,” says Donna, a Fresh Air host. Families find hosting so rewarding that more

than 65 percent of all Fresh Air children are reinvited visit the same host families year after year. First-time Fresh Air visitors are six to 12 years old and Fresh Air hosts range from young families to grandparents. All it takes is the willingness to welcome a New York City child to your community. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-forprofit organization, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.7 million innercity children since 1877. Everyone wants, and deserves, to enjoy life, feel productive and be secure. Since 1987, when President Ronald Regan officially proclaimed March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we have taken extra steps during this month to raise awareness about the needs and rights of people with disabilities and to celebrate their accomplishments and contributions to our communities and society as a whole. The original proclamation called for people to provide understanding, encouragement and opportunities to help persons with developmental disabilities to lead productive and fulfilling lives. March is recognized by groups across the country as an opportunity to highlight the accomplishments and

challenges facing people with developmental disabilities and their families. UCP Suffolk encourages all to celebrate “Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month” by sharing these important facts: • Developmental disability is a natural part of the human experience and affects approximately 4.6 million Americans. • All people with developmental disabilities can be productive, contributing members of their communities! • During times of economic decline, essential services and supports for people with developmental disabilities are often threatened. • Policy makers can only make good public policy when they hear from the people directly affected by their decisions! “People with

SOUTH bAy SUCCESS STORy! TROOPER, the Poodle who had his eye surgically removed after being hit by a car in Wyandanch, was recently adopted. A lovely family saw him in South Bay - he looked just like their Bichon mix that had died. They called Babylon Shelter and were told he had been moved to Last Hope. The family rushed right down to Wantagh and, after going through the adoption process, took Trooper home. He is doing wonderfully with their other Bichons, kids, everyone... he fit right in! Here he is pictured in his new home.
