Edgar Intermediate School’s fifth-grade chorus took audiences on a magical adventure through several ancient civilizations this March as they performed Dig It! – A Musical Tale of Ancient Civilizations as this year’s spring musical. The musical followed the journey of two young archeologists, Taki and Tut, and Lucy the Skeleton as they traveled through various ancient civilizations, from Mesopotamia, Egypt and India to China, Greece and Rome.

In December 2012, Longwood CSD students were offered the opportunity to receive a free laptop. All they needed to do was write an essay explaining why they deserved to get it. The three laptops winners were Wayne Lamont, Alyssa Hudson, and Michael Mirabile, seventh graders in Longwood Jr. High School. Michael said, “I use the laptop to go onto Longwood Teach. I use it to check homework assignments. It’s great.” “I didn’t expect to win,” said Alyssa, but she is glad she did. She used the laptop while doing an English project on the book Witch and Wizard. Wayne Lamont shared that he used the laptop to get onto an IXL math

website. He said, “It’s a tutoring website. It helps me with my school work.” The students will be asked to submit another essay indicating how the laptops have improved their lives and their school work. So, where were the free laptops coming from? They are donated to the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Computer Technology Program at Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) in Bellport. ESBOCES Computer Technology Program students have been on a mission to give away laptops they have refurbished. To date they have given away hundreds of them. Computer Technology Teacher Giovanni Chiarelli said, “My students are getting practical experience fixing

these donated laptops. Giving other students educational opportunities whether it is in other countries or other districts is part of the one-to-one student mentoring that we are striving for.” In February, laptops refurbished by ESBOCES students were donated to the ShorehamWading River CSD Global Awareness Club. Those laptops were delivered to Meru, Kenya via the Hope Children’s Fund (HCF). It’s a win-win situation for the ESBOCES students and anyone who receives a laptop; the ESBOCES students continue to improve their troubleshooting and technology skills, and the recipients get a free laptop to improve their lives.

Bracelets For A Cause Students in Special Education Teacher Mindy Speichler’s class at the ESBOCES Brookhaven Learning Center (BLC) @ Samoset Middle School in the Sachem CSD wanted to raise money for the Sandy victims. As a class project, they decided to make beaded bracelets. They worked hard creating over 500

handmade beaded bracelets. They chose the colors, mixed them together, and assembled them for a good cause. Their efforts raised $420 for Sandy victims in need. Ms. Speichler said, “During this project, the students showed an interest in working as a team. We saw an increase in collaboration and

socialization as they shared materials and creative ideas.” ESBOCES Occupational Therapist Laura Donovan said, “The students worked at their highest level of independence. Making the bracelets provided another venue for working bi-lateral coordination skills as well as hand strengthening activities.”

Balance teaches participants balance skills and good body alignment by using coordinated and flowing movements. The course is designed for community-dwelling older adults aged 65 and older, who can walk easily with or without assistive devices. Participants will feel stronger, have better balance and greater flexibility, and feel more confident after completing the Tai Chi program. Approximately one-third of adults 65 and over fall at least once a year, and many who sustain injuries stop physical activity for fear of falling. Through its annual Read Across America celebration on March 2nd, the National Education Association (NEA) is encouraging schools, libraries, community centers and other organizations to “build a nation of readers” by bringing children, teenagers and books together. Huntington Learning Center is joining the bandwagon right here in Saint James by encouraging both the young and old to read while offering tips on how to make reading fun. On Wednesday, March 20th, Saint James Elementary School celebrated Read Across America by inviting Tara Flynn, the Center Director of Huntington Learning

Center of Smithtown, to read to its first and fourth grade classes. Upon arrival, Flynn was escorted to her first classroom by representatives selected from the first grade class. She spent half an hour reading to and with the first graders before her fourth grade escort arrived to bring her to their classroom. Afterwards, Assistant Principal Stephanie Dellinger extended an invitation for Flynn to return for the school’s April science fair. “It was a fabulous experience,” Flynn said after the visit. “I strongly urge all other centers to do the same with their local schools. Read Across America Day, officially celebrated on Dr. Seuss’s

birthday, gives education professionals like us another reason to show children and teenagers in the community how important and exciting reading can be for them. Reading is such an integral part of growing. Liliuokalani aka Ms. Hansen engaged the students in an artful project making flower leis. There was a plethora of pineapples for the picking and eating. No virtual pineapples this time - they were real and delicious! The trip to Hawaii ended with the students listening to traditional Hawaiian music and learning to hula dance. The Common Core Standards accompanied the students on their trip. It may have been a virtual trip but in reality, they learned so much and never left the classroom.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last week, out of sheer curiosity, I decided to go through my column archive to see just how many I had published up to this point. Wouldn’t you know, last week marked #399, making this week’s column quite a mini-milestone. Nearly eight years of writing In Step… wow, time sure does fly. In honor of the occasion, I thought I’d resurrect my very first column, published July 27th, 2005… Living The Dream As I write these words, the calendar has ﬂipped to exactly one year, two months and eleven days since my graduation from C.W. Post on May 9th, 2004. At that time, never could I have imagined that I would soon be working for the very newspaper I had grown up reading as a lifelong resident of Lindenhurst. And yet here I am; an editor and sometimes writer for none other

than South Bay’s Neighbor. The majority of college graduates I have come into contact with seem to all have the same lofty, if materialistic, goal – to become rich and famous doing… well, anything that comes along. If it happens to be even remotely related to that field which they studied through four years of school, that’s a mere bonus. So long as the money comes rolling in, cash-flow and happiness are seemingly one and the same. I, on the other hand, have always ascribed to a much more simplistic, if perhaps slightly idealistic, principle – I feel as long as I am fortunate enough to make a decent living doing something I truly love and have genuine talent in, then why shouldn’t I be content going to work each and every day? Fast forward from my graduation through a year of highs and lows, from voluntarily taking four months off to enjoy “my last official summer vacation

ever,” as I relentlessly reminded all who would listen, to involuntarily remaining unemployed – save for my part-time jobs at The Little Flower Shop and Diane’s Dance Center - through eight more months of fruitless job searching. And then, at long last, the light at the end of the tunnel…a call from South Bay’s Neighbor, willing to give a Journalism grad a shot with their ever-expanding newspaper. Imagine that, an opportunity to gain experience in the ﬁeld instead of being turned away for my lack of it. How exactly is one supposed to gain any semblance of hands-on expertise if no one will give him/her an opportunity to shine? At some point along the way, someone has to take a chance on you. How lucky I am that South Bay’s Neighbor decided to take a chance on me. I began my ﬁrst full week of work on May 9th, 2005, exactly one year to the day after I graduated from college. I guess some things are just meant to be.

Are you ready to make the commitment to a pet? Cats can live up to 18 years. On average, pet care costs about $400 a year. • Visit a pet adoption

center. Don’t shop when you can adopt. Shelters have many cats to choose from and adoption saves lives. • Questions? Ask the staff. The shelter staff can often tell you the animal’s personality traits, likes, dislikes, temperament, breed, and activity level. Keep your options open. A pet doesn’t have to

be a kitten to be a loyal companion. • Patience. Be patient. You may need to visit the adoption centers a few times before you find the cat that’s right for you. • Decide as a family. Does the cat get along with everyone and how does everyone get along with the cat? • You made a decision,

now what? Edgar Intermediate School’s fifth-grade chorus took audiences on a magical adventure through several ancient civilizations this March as they performed Dig It! – A Musical Tale of Ancient Civilizations as this year’s spring musical. “This educational musical piqued the students’ interests in refreshing ways,” stated Craig Knapp, JAE music teacher and musical director, who noted that the students had been rehearsing for

months leading up to the performances. “It kept them eager to learn even more about the truths and mysteries of the ancient civilizations that inhabited our planet. As children remember what they learn through music, this musical has also provided the students with a vehicle to learn lessons of literature, history, geography, science, art and social studies.” The musical followed the journey of two young archeologists, Taki and Tut, and Lucy

Healthy Recipe Contest

As part of its continuing partnership, the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) of New York and Kohl’s Department Stores are teaming up to inspire families to develop creative, nutritious, and kid-friendly recipes. With the understanding that cooking with children is a great way to promote healthy eating habits, the Iron Chef Cook-Off is now underway! Here’s how it works: Recipes can be entered by going to www. kohlshealthykidsny.com/ RecipesContest/IronChef. A parent or legal guardian.. not the child…may submit recipes from their child (between the ages of 5-17). The recipes are to be submitted via the recipe submission tab along with a photo of the recipe. The three categories to be judged are side dishes,

entrees, and dessert/ snacks. Recipes are submitted online and will be accepted until Friday, May 10th, 2013. Submissions must fall into one of three categories: appetizer/side dishes; entrée; dessert/ snacks. Five semifinalists from each category will be chosen and notified on Wednesday, May 15th. These semifinalists will attend a cook-off at CCMC on Saturday, June 8th, at 10 a.m. Iron Chef Danny Gagnon will be present to assist with judging at the cookoff event. At that time, one winner will be selected from each category. These 3 finalists will be judged; the winner will receive the Grand Prize and the two runners-up will be awarded prizes, as well. In addition, the 15 seminfinalists also will be placed in the online voting

contest. The community will be able to vote for their favorite recipe, and a winner will be chosen at the cook-off for the recipe that received the most votes. Contestants will bring ingredients to the cook-off necessary to prepare the submitted recipe. CCMC will facilitate cooking needs such as a hot plate and oven should the recipe require heating. Keep in mind: preparation and cooking time should not exceed 90 minutes. So, grab a pot and pan and get to work! A cookbook will be created with all the new and exciting recipes that are received. A New Tactic In The War Against Cholesterol

There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to

prescription medications. A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesteroland triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days. The supplement is made up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols. According to a published clinical study, Sytrinol was able to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The formula is also said to increase HDL levels. This is often referred to as the “good cholesterol” because of

the way it transports LDL cholesterol away from the heart and back into the bloodstream. Heart-Healthy Ingredients One of the main active ingredients in Sytrinol is a group of compounds derived from the peels of citrus fruits. The two most common are tangeretin and nobiletin, which are described as extremely potent bioflavonoids. Another ingredient is a group of palm tocotrienols, which are members of the vitamin E family and are extracted from the fruit of the palm tree. Like vitamin E, palm tocotrienols control anti-inflammatory responses and degrade a key enzyme used by the liver to produce cholesterol.
