In December 2012, Longwood CSD students were offered the opportunity to receive a free laptop. All they needed to do was write an essay explaining why they deserved to get it. The three laptops winners were Wayne Lamont, Alyssa Hudson, and Michael Mirabile, seventh graders in Longwood Jr. High School. Michael said, “I use the laptop to go onto Longwood Teach. I use it to check homework assignments. It’s great.” “I didn’t expect to win,” said Alyssa, but she is glad she did. She used the laptop while doing an English project on the book Witch and Wizard. Wayne Lamont shared that he used the laptop to get onto an IXL math

website. He said, “It’s a tutoring website. It helps me with my school work.” The students will be asked to submit another essay indicating how the laptops have improved their lives and their school work. So, where were the free laptops coming from? They are donated to the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Computer Technology Program at Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) in Bellport. ESBOCES Computer Technology Program students have been on a mission to give away laptops they have refurbished. To date they have given away hundreds of them. Computer Technology Teacher Giovanni Chiarelli said, “My students are getting practical experience fixing

these donated laptops. Giving other students educational opportunities whether it is in other countries or other districts is part of the one-to-one student mentoring that we are striving for.” In February, laptops refurbished by ESBOCES students were donated to the ShorehamWading River CSD Global Awareness Club. Those laptops were delivered to Meru, Kenya via the Hope Children’s Fund (HCF). It’s a win-win situation for the ESBOCES students and anyone who receives a laptop; the ESBOCES students continue to improve their troubleshooting and technology skills, and the recipients get a free laptop to improve their lives.

(NAPSI)—If living a healthier life is your cup of tea, you may be interested in an easy way to improve your health— using the natural antioxidant powers of tea. Almost half of all Americans are overweight and have dangerously high levels of cholesterol. Heart attacks are still the No. 1 killer in the U.S. The problem is that high cholesterol and your risk may be greater than you think. According to American Heart Association guidelines, the acceptable level of “bad cholesterol” is 30 percent lower than it used to be only a few years ago.

This means that millions of Americans, including those who never dreamed they were at risk, now are. Fortunately, there are natural, nonprescription alternatives for lowering cholesterol. For example, heart-healthy products such as TeaFlavin, an all-natural, caffeine-free

capsule made from tea extract, contain as much cholesterol-fighting power as 35 cups of green tea. For more information on TeaFlavin, visit www. teaflavin.com or call (800) 876-4332.

(NAPSI)—Allergies no longer have to prevent pet ownership. By taking a few simple precautionary steps, it is possible to comfortably live with both pets and allergies. Here are a few helpful tips: • Shut the door. Keep cats or dogs from your bedroom—and not just when you are sleeping. If you keep the door closed, it will prevent cat or dog hair from drifting in during the day. This also applies to a guest room if you happen to be hosting a guest with allergies. • Keep pets off the furniture. You can do this by placing a plastic cover on the furniture or by placing pieces of aluminum foil on areas where pets settle. They find the noise disturbing. Or you can try orange peel; cats dislike the smell. • Ditch the carpets. Pet hair tends to stick to

Bracelets For A Cause Students in Special Education Teacher Mindy Speichler’s class at the ESBOCES Brookhaven Learning Center (BLC) @ Samoset Middle School in the Sachem CSD wanted to raise money for the Sandy victims. As a class project, they decided to make beaded bracelets. They worked hard creating over 500

handmade beaded bracelets. They chose the colors, mixed them together, and assembled them for a good cause. Their efforts raised $420 for Sandy victims in need. Ms. Speichler said, “During this project, the students showed an interest in working as a team. We saw an increase in collaboration and

socialization as they shared materials and creative ideas.” ESBOCES Occupational Therapist Laura Donovan said, “The students worked at their highest level of independence. Making the bracelets provided another venue for working bi-lateral coordination skills as well as hand strengthening activities.”

Mornings seems more comfortable, like that small child snuggling by your side. Go Program™ Event

Finding The Fun

Through its annual Read Across America celebration on March 2nd, the National Education Association (NEA) is encouraging schools, libraries, community centers and other organizations to “build a nation of readers” by bringing children, teenagers and books together. Huntington Learning Center is joining the bandwagon right here in Saint James by encouraging both the young and old to read while offering tips on how to make reading fun. On Wednesday, March 20th, Saint James Elementary School celebrated Read Across America by inviting Tara Flynn, the Center Director of Huntington Learning

Center of Smithtown, to read to its first and fourth grade classes. Upon arrival, Flynn was escorted to her first classroom by representatives selected from the first grade class. She spent half an hour reading to and with the first graders before her fourth grade escort arrived to bring her to their classroom. Afterwards, Assistant Principal Stephanie Dellinger extended an invitation for Flynn to return for the school’s April science fair. “It was a fabulous experience,” Flynn said after the visit. “I strongly urge all other centers to do the same with their local schools. Read Across America Day, officially celebrated on Dr. Seuss’s

birthday, gives education professionals like us another reason to show children and teenagers in the community how important and exciting reading can be for them. Reading is such an integral part of growing. And, with the continued popularity around technology advances in social media, cell phones and video games, we want to bring back the ‘fun’ in fundamental reading.” NEA is in its 16th year of its Read Across America Day campaign, commemorating the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, renowned writer and cartoonist most widely known for his children’s books written under the pen name Dr. Seuss.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last week, out of sheer curiosity, I decided to go through my column archive to see just how many I had published up to this point. Wouldn’t you know, last week marked #399, making this week’s column quite a mini-milestone. Nearly eight years of writing In Step… wow, time sure does fly. In honor of the occasion, I thought I’d resurrect my very first column, published July 27th, 2005… Living The Dream As I write these words, the calendar has flipped to exactly one year, two months and eleven days since my graduation from C.W. Post on May 9th, 2004. At that time, never could I have imagined that I would soon be working for the very newspaper I had grown up reading as a lifelong resident of Lindenhurst. And yet here I am; an editor and sometimes writer for none other

than South Bay’s Neighbor. The majority of college graduates I have come into contact with seem to all have the same lofty, if materialistic, goal – to become rich and famous doing… well, anything that comes along. If it happens to be even remotely related to that field which they studied through four years of school, that’s a mere bonus. So long as the money comes rolling in, cash-flow and happiness are seemingly one and the same. I, on the other hand, have always ascribed to a much more simplistic, if perhaps slightly idealistic, principle – I feel as long as I am fortunate enough to make a decent living doing something I truly love and have genuine talent in, then why shouldn’t I be content going to work each and every day? Fast forward from my graduation through a year of highs and lows, from voluntarily taking four months off to enjoy “my last official summer vacation

ever,” as I relentlessly reminded all who would listen, to involuntarily remaining unemployed – save for my part-time jobs at The Little Flower Shop and Diane’s Dance Center - through eight more months of fruitless job searching. And then, at long last, the light at the end of the tunnel…a call from South Bay’s Neighbor, willing to give a Journalism grad a shot with their ever-expanding newspaper. Imagine that, an opportunity to gain experience in the field instead of being turned away for my lack of it. How exactly is one supposed to gain any semblance of hands-on expertise if no one will give him/her an opportunity to shine? At some point along the way, someone has to take a chance on you. How lucky I am that South Bay’s Neighbor decided to take a chance on me. I began my first full week of work on May 9th, 2005, exactly one year to the day after I graduated from college. I guess some things are just meant to be.

(NAPSI)-It’s easy for teens to pretend they’re older than they are online, but it doesn’t mean they’re ready for anything the Internet can tharow at them. By monitoring and engaging teens about their online activity, parents can help them exercise self-control, report problems—and make smarter, safer decisions. Even the best kids from the most loving families take risks and get carried away when socializing or gossiping with friends— and they don’t want you to know about it. Did You Know? • 65 percent of high school students admit to unsafe or illegal activities online. • 30 percent of teens have talked with a cyberstranger about meeting in person.

• 32 percent clear the browser history to hide online activity from their parents. • 64 percent post photos or videos of themselves online. • 73 percent use social networking websites. Tips for Reducing Risky Behaviors Be proactive. Don’t wait for a crisis to happen before addressing online safety. Remind your teen about rules and consequences, and stay engaged in the process. Other tips include: • Explore the Internet together. • Enforce ground rules and time limits. • Become their friend on social networking sites. • Learn about privacy settings and set them appropriately. • Trust but verify by installing monitoring

It can inform you of searches for topics such as “depression” or “drugs.” It can also warn you if others are teasing them or daring your child to GNOC (get naked on camera). (NAPSI)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go. The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe. Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some Answers Busy parents and caregivers may be tempted by safety shortcuts when transporting children. AAA offers simple reminders to protect parents’ most precious cargo.

in their public libraries. Sutton, the book selection for 2013, is a fictionalized account of one of the most notorious, romantic, and enigmatic criminals of the 20th century. It tells a story of economic pain that feels eerily modern, while unfolding a story of doomed love that is forever timeless. Author J.R. Moehringer will appear at the Long Island Reads author talk and book signing at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library at 999 Old Country Road on Sunday, May 19th at 2 p.m. Books will be available for purchase and signing. The event is free, and all are welcome. Registration is not required. Raised in Manhasset, N.Y., J.R. Moehringer has written for newspapers across the United States, including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Rocky Mountain News. In 2005, he published his first book, The Tender Bar, a bestselling memoir which recounts his childhood and early adulthood in Manhasset, where the local bar served as a sanctuary from his chaotic family life. Moehringer went on to become a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, winning the Livingston Award for Young Journalists, as well as a feature writing award

from the Associated Press News Executives Council. In 2000, he won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. Moehringer cowrote Andrew Agassi’s bestselling autobiography Open in 2009. Sutton is his first work of fiction. How To Decide If A Cat Is Right For You (NAPSI)—Cats can be loving, loyal, feisty or fierce—and if you saw the hit movie “Puss In Boots,” then you know one cat can embody all those traits and more. Adopting a cat can be a “purrfectly” wonderful idea as long as you understand the commitment that comes along with it. Before bringing a cat

home, consider these tips from Madeline Bernstein, president of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA): • Evaluate your needs. Are you ready to make the commitment to a pet? Cats can live up to 18 years. On average, pet care costs about $400 a year. • Visit a pet adoption

center. Don’t shop when you can adopt. Shelters have many cats to choose from and adoption saves lives. • Questions? Ask the staff. The shelter staff can often tell you the animal’s personality traits, likes, dislikes, temperament, breed, and activity level. Keep your options open. A pet doesn’t have to

be a kitten to be a loyal companion. • Patience. Be patient. You may need to visit the adoption centers a few times before you find the cat that’s right for you. • Decide as a family. Does the cat get along with everyone and how does everyone get along with the cat? • You made a decision,

now what? Here are some items you should have before bringing your new cat home: ID tag and breakaway collar, cat food, pet bowls (2), litter box (rule of thumb: one for each cat, plus one), litter and scooper, toys, treats, scratching post, cat carrier (for vet trips/ emergencies) and a plan for veterinary care.

• We love our new cat, but we’re having some issues. Don’t give up. The solution may only require a slight adjustment in behaviors. spcaLA has an Animal Behavior Hotline at (888) SPCALA-1, x260 to answer pet behavior questions.

tandem with the district’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports initiative and the state-mandated Dignity for All Students Act, this year’s event focused on ways to identify the differences between being a bully and being mean, as well as the many different outlets for these actions to take place. Special guest and former “American Idol” contestant Leah Laurenti performed the program’s “Get a Voice” theme song before several staff and students took to the microphone to share poems and skits surrounding the program’s

theme. “We hope that each of the students here today leaves with a clear understanding of what it means to have pride and to be an upstander – two very important parts of our school’s anti-bullying program,” stated Debbi Rakowsky, school social worker and PBIS committee member. “Through the skits and personal stories shared, we also hope that they walk away inspired to continue to create unity in the building and promote tolerance and acceptance for all.”

Thanking Our Veterans

A group of senior citizens from the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department recently spent the afternoon at the Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University. According to Laura Greif, Program Director, “We have a group of very talented women who spend countless hours making

quilts and lap blankets specifically for our nations’ veterans. They are a very patriotic group who want to say thank you in a personal way.” The group distributed fifty quilts/blankets to residents, all of whom had the opportunity to pick out one in their favorite color. Jacqueline Bodkin, Assistant Director of

Therapeutic Recreation, hosted the event and was very grateful for the donation. For more information about the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department come visit us at 420 Middle Country Road in Smithtown, call us at 631.360.7616 or visit us at www.smithtownny.gov.

Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School’s fifth-grade chorus took audiences on a magical adventure through several ancient civilizations this March as they performed Dig It! – A Musical Tale of Ancient Civilizations as this year’s spring musical. “This educational musical piqued the students’ interests in refreshing ways,” stated Craig Knapp, JAE music teacher and musical director, who noted that the students had been rehearsing for

months leading up to the performances. “It kept them eager to learn even more about the truths and mysteries of the ancient civilizations that inhabited our planet. As children remember what they learn through music, this musical has also provided the students with a vehicle to learn lessons of literature, history, geography, science, art and social studies.” The musical followed the journey of two young archeologists, Taki and Tut, and Lucy

the Skeleton as they traveled through various ancient civilizations, from Mesopotamia, Egypt and India to China, Greece and Rome. Lucy was based on an actual complete skeleton found near Ethiopia in 1976 by two archaeologists who gave her the same name. The storyline also included the tale of twin brothers Romulus and Remus, credited in myth for the founding of Rome, as well as facts and figures about Confucius in the East and King Zoser in Egypt.

On March 21st, the Terryville Elementary School Drama Club presented a wonderful stage show called Dear Edwina, Jrj. This ensemble cast of talented youngsters played to an enthusiastic audience of parents, siblings, friends, teachers and many, many, proud THANKING OUR VETERANS - Pictured: JoAnn Loh, Teresa Foti, Christine grandparents. O’Connor, Rose Garbarino, Dorothy Lehl and Carolyn Eberhardt. Photo by: Patty Led by 5th grader Bornhoft Paloma Blatter, it

follows the adventures of Edwina Spoonapple, an extraordinary young advice giver in the vein of Ann Landers. 4th grader Isabella Gordon played the role of the Queen of Boola Boola who would sing advice to a young Hazaar Catabas. Her words of wisdom would convince ‘Johnny’ that what may be good for one person, might not be quite right for

another. Wise words from the Queen of Boola Boola. Congratulations to the entire cast, teachers, members of the Comsewogue Board of Education, Superintendent Dr. Joseph V. Rella and, especially, the show’s Director Mr. Paul Johnson, and his assistants, Tory Malvetti and Cyndi Rivera.

Healthy Recipe Contest

As part of its continuing partnership, the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) of New York and Kohl’s Department Stores are teaming up to inspire families to develop creative, nutritious, and kid-friendly recipes. With the understanding that cooking with children is a great way to promote healthy eating habits, the Iron Chef Cook-Off is now underway! Here’s how it works: Recipes can be entered by going to www. kohlshealthykidsny.com/ RecipesContest/IronChef. A parent or legal guardian.. not the child…may submit recipes from their child (between the ages of 5-17). The recipes are to be submitted via the recipe submission tab along with a photo of the recipe. The three categories to be judged are side dishes,

entrees, and dessert/ snacks. Recipes are submitted online and will be accepted until Friday, May 10th, 2013. Submissions must fall into one of three categories: appetizer/side dishes; entrée; dessert/ snacks. Five semifinalists from each category will be chosen and notified on Wednesday, May 15th. These semifinalists will attend a cook-off at CCMC on Saturday, June 8th, at 10 a.m. Iron Chef Danny Gagnon will be present to assist with judging at the cookoff event. At that time, one winner will be selected from each category. These 3 finalists will be judged; the winner will receive the Grand Prize and the two runners-up will be awarded prizes, as well. In addition, the 15 seminfinalists also will be placed in the online voting

contest. The community will be able to vote for their favorite recipe, and a winner will be chosen at the cook-off for the recipe that received the most votes. Contestants will bring ingredients to the cook-off necessary to prepare the submitted recipe. CCMC will facilitate cooking needs such as a hot plate and oven should the recipe require heating. Keep in mind: preparation and cooking time should not exceed 90 minutes. So, grab a pot and pan and get to work! A cookbook will be created with all the new and exciting recipes that are received. Arid A camel needs little water because it sweats very little, and keeps most of the water that is in it’s body.

A New Tactic In The War Against Cholesterol

There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to

prescription medications. A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesteroland triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days. The supplement is made up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols. According to a published clinical study, Sytrinol was able to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The formula is also said to increase HDL levels. This is often referred to as the “good cholesterol” because of

the way it transports LDL cholesterol away from the heart and back into the bloodstream. Heart-Healthy Ingredients One of the main active ingredients in Sytrinol is a group of compounds derived from the peels of citrus fruits. The two most common are tangeretin and nobiletin, which are described as extremely potent bioflavonoids. Another ingredient is a group of palm tocotrienols, which are members of the vitamin E family and are extracted from the fruit of the palm tree. Like vitamin E, palm tocotrienols control anti-inflammatory responses and degrade a key enzyme used by the liver to produce cholesterol.

and other chronic conditions. On top of that, Medicare now covers a yearly “wellness” exam that can spotlight steps you need to take to take charge of your health. As part of this checkup, you can work with your doctor on developing your own prevention plan. These new benefits can make a difference in people’s lives, because they enable older Americans to get the preventive care they need without worrying about cost. Research has shown that individuals are less likely to get health screenings when they have to pay for them. Many older Americans have not been getting important preventive services, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For example, millions of older people at risk for diabetes

and colorectal cancer have not been screened for those illnesses. Similarly, millions of older Americans have not received a vaccine for pneumococcal disease, even though research shows that the risk of developing the diseases increases with age and the presence of chronic conditions. When it comes to staying well, most people know they should eat right, get exercise and keep their weight in check. Now, many can add a new item to the list by taking advantage of Medicare’s new benefits for preventive services. Such services could save your life. Celebrating Women’s History

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Legislator Sarah Anker honored Empire State Development Director Andrea Lohneiss and Networking Magazine Founder and Publisher Christine Conniff Sheahan at the March 19th General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature. “Christine and Andrea serve as true role models and mentors to many women, including myself,” said Legislator Anker. “Their successes, both professionally and personally, are a testimony to the accomplished roles women have achieved in business and government.” As the Long Island Regional Director of

Empire State Development, Andrea has worked to promote economic growth in both Nassau and Suffolk County. She applies her invaluable background in community development and knowledge of economic policy to implement successful business expansion projects. Since 1991, through her publication Networking Magazine, Christine Conniff Sheahan has provided outstanding coverage on women’s issues. In addition, she has demonstrated her commitment to the progress of women, social causes and environmental stewardship. The magazine has featured influential women

(NAPSI)—Staying healthy just got a little easier if you’re 65 or older. That’s because Medicare now covers many wellness and preventive services free of charge. Older Americans can get important screenings, immunizations and an annual “wellness” checkup without spending a dime, under provisions in the Affordable Care Act that took effect in January 2011. “These services have the potential to add years to your life-and the life of your loved ones,” said AARP board member and geriatric specialist William J. Hall, M.D. “We urge older Americans to get all the preventive services their doctors recommend.” For the first time, Medicare will pay entirely for a host of vital screenings-for colon and other cancers, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis
