Golf Outing A Success n September 24th, VFW Post 6249, based in Rocky Point, held its 5th Annual Golf Outing to help support the Wounded Warrior Project. This VFW Post decided to support the Wounded Warriors because they gave so much of themselves in service to our great country. Scholarships have been established in memory of Sgt. Jonathan Keller and Sgt. 1st Class Anthony Venetz, who made the ultimate sacrifice. Thanks to all who participated.

On Monday, September 24th, students from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School and Port Jefferson Middle School, as well as the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School fifthgrade class, attended workshops presented by Motivational Media Assemblies as part of their Peace Day observance. High school and middle school students participated in the Take The Lead program, which reinforced the idea that everyone has the power to make a positive impact and influence what happens in our world. Elementary school students took part in the “Rise & Shine” program, which motivated children

to adopt a positive outlook in order to rise above challenges and achieve great things. “I think that the students not only learned from these presentations, but also enjoyed them because they are contemporary,” said Port Jefferson Middle School Principal Antonio Santana. “The goal is to encourage positive decision-making by having follow-up classroom discussions and time for students to reflect. It’s never too late to do the right thing.” The Take the Lead program addressed difficult issues and topics such as self-confidence, peer pressure,
accountability and the growing society of passive citizens, and encouraged students to become leaders that can change these issues and save lives. The Rise & Shine presentation emphasized the importance of building life around attitude, ability and adaptability. A strong, positive outlook was depicted as the key to overcoming status issues, bullying and racial tension, and as the most important element in learning to love oneself and others and unlocking one’s unlimited potential. The Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island sponsored by B.FIT, will hold its Annual Walk for Epilepsy on Saturday, October 13th, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will take place at Eisenhower Park, Field 6/6A, East Meadow, New York and is expected to draw over 300 walkers. The registration fee is $25 before October 13th and $30 on the day of the event (children under 12 are free). Register early by visiting our website at www.efli.org. It is a philosophy I share with my students at Harbor, and the Gnomes for the Gym project was a perfect opportunity to illustrate that important philosophy with the children. It is so lovely that there were so many unique and talented artist who were eager to create for a charitable cause. The collection of gnomes and toadstools we will be auctioning off are quite amazing and I am eager to see them enjoyed by others.”

Harbor Country Day School announces a Gnomes for the Gym Benefit Auction to be held on October 19th at Lombardi’s on the Sound in Port Jefferson. The
benefit will feature 25 garden Gnomes and nearly three dozen Toadstools imaginatively created by Long Island artisans for auction. Proceeds from the auction will fund a renovation of Harbor’s gym planned for winter 2012-2013. The event is the brainchild of Harbor Board of Trustees member Adrienne Owen, who is serving as the Event Chair. “Gnomes are enchanted woodland folk and since Harbor Country Day is nestled in the woods of Head of the Harbor, who better to help renovate Harbor’s gym than a troupe of gnomes,” said Mrs. Owen. The Harbor Gnomes and Toadstools, which are all original and unique in design, are being crafted in fiberglass and measure twenty-nine and eleven inches tall, respectively. Before being considered

Democracy 2012 exhibit called “Social Realism,” Michelle created an artistic depiction of the word “dream.” The exhibit sought artwork from middle and high school students throughout Long Island and challenged those artists to convey what they consider to be the challenging issues facing the United States today through the images
they created. The exhibit will be open to the public the day before the second presidential debate at the university. “I was really surprised to find out that my piece was chosen for the art show,” stated Michelle. “It’s really overwhelming to know that I am going to be a part of such a historic event. I feel very honored.”

HONORING OUR HEROES - For the third year, the Harbormen Barbershop Chorus were invited to participate in the services honoring our veterans at the Woods of Cherry Creek Golf Course in Riverhead on September 21st. There were several color guards representing our service men and women, a bagpiper who played during a stirring memorial service for our fallen service men and women and a very exciting parachute jumper landing right on target in the middle of the crowd. There was also a coast guard fly-by to honor the troops. The Harbormen were honored to participate in the event by singing the National Anthem and a very stirring rendition of God Bless America.

On September 15th, Legislator Sarah Anker joined members of the Anna Smith-Strong Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to observe and c o m m e m o r a t e Constitution Week. “This chapter serves as an excellent example of how the constitution supports a strong foundation of patriotism,” said Legislator Anker.” “I take great pride in recognizing the
Daughters of the American Revolution: Anna Smith-Strong Chapter for their volunteer work throughout our community.” Founded in 1890, The Daughters of the American Revolution are dedicated to promoting patriotism to preserve American history. Most recently, the organization participated in the “Socks for Soldiers and Sailors” program where they filled
more than 240 pairs of socks with small supplies for recovering soldiers and sailors in local VA hospitals. Constitution Week runs annually from September 17th to September 23rd. It was officially enacted on August 2nd, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower from a congressional resolution petitioned by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
A few weeks ago, my friend and I got the bright inspiration to walk all the way to Kismet from the Fire Island Lighthouse. I had been told it wasn’t an extremely long journey, and, timed just right in the early fall, would be quite lovely and scenic. Well, it was certainly scenic. Considering that there is basically one route from the Lighthouse leading into the Fire Island communities, one would think there would be no need for directions. But, just for kicks, I decided to put the address of the restaurant we planned to go to – Surf’s Out – into my phone and ask the famous Siri for directions. Immediately, my trusty little map dropped a pin at our current location, as well as another quite some distance away. At first glance, it seemed rather far, but we paid no mind. We just started walking. Pretty soon, we saw the sign telling us we were entering Kismet Village. Okay, we were on the right track. My friend thought she remem-
bered that there was a particular cross street we would need to make a left turn on, in order to head north to the Bay side of the Island, where the restaurants were located. Not quite certain which road it was, we figured surely there would be a sign. Oh, there was a sign all right! The next marker we came across welcomed us to the Village of Saltaire – in other words, we were now exiting Kismet. Hmmm… interesting. And yet there remained the little glowing dot on my phone, still way off in the distance. Something was very wrong. As I zoomed in further, I started to faintly make out the words “Ocean Beach” stamped on the map. Ocean Beach?! As in that town I had not too long ago take a ferry to?! I didn’t even know you could walk there if you wanted to! And who in their right mind would want to? Uh-oh, we were seriously off track. At that point, short of knocking on a local resident’s door – many of whom had already packed it in for the season – the only other
passers-by consisted of bicyclists zooming by – and deer…lots of deer, galloping across the street, darting from one yard to the other presumably in search of something to munch on. Ah, but then, out of the blue came an older couple, clearly local residents out for a leisurely afternoon stroll. “Excuse me, but can you tell us if there is a restaurant near here?” my friend inquired. “Oh yes,” the man said. Oh good, I thought. “But not here…” Uhoh. “It’s way back in Kismet,” he gestured in the direction from which we had just come. Oh boy. “How far, exactly?” “Oh, it’s a good hike,” his wife said apologetically. We politely thanked them and began the long process of retracing our steps, finally arriving at our intended destination – approximately 3.5 miles and 1 hour and 20 minutes after departing. All for the experience of walking to Kismet. It was an experience all right. Suffice it to say, Siri will not be invited on our next journey.

During October, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Stony Brook (UUFSB) will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of its founding in 1962. Fifty years ago, 18 friends joined together to create a new religious organization aligned with the Unitarian Universalist Association, which had been formed the previous year by a merger of the Unitarian and Universalist denominations. The goal of the Stony Brook area group was to create a community where people of non-dogmatic faith could find common ground, worship together, and work for a better world. Fifty years later, UUFSB has more than 230 members, a full-time minister and vibrant programs for youth and adult religious education, meditative arts, and music. The congregation was active in the fight for passage of the New York Marriage Equality Act in 2011, and serves as a source of dedicated volunteers for the Welcome Inn soup
