Concussion of the brain is the very common injury that occurs under different circumstances. It can occur during the simple slip and fall accident, motor vehicle accident, but most commonly it does in sport. Over the last ten years a lot of research was done with an intention to explain why there is much higher incidence of neurological disorders affecting professional sport players. This study eventually revealed that a mild head injury causes pathological processes that eventually may lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, etc. During the mild head injury or mild concussion of the brain, the symptoms of the actual injury could be transient and brief, and eventually this condition becomes virtually asymptomatic or having very subtle symptoms. Those symptoms could be just a mild headache, excessive fatigue, excessive or lack of sleep, problem with concentration. Since many symptoms of concussion are brief and may not be present on the second or third day after the concussion, it will leave very little tools to help a doctor to determine if the player is ready to go back to play. Current thinking is that optimal recovery of concussed students occurs when there is cognitive, physical, and emotional rest following injury. Additionally, research has shown that 92% of second injuries occur in the first week following the initial injury, and the goal is to allow adequate recovery time before allowing a student to risk re-injury. Pressure to return an athlete before it is safe can be intense from parents and athletes. Primary care physicians are being asked to assist in the process of keeping injured children safe by remaining objective and withholding participation until it is deemed safe with a reasonable degree of medical certainty.
return to school), but we anticipate a similar slow exertional challenge as we see in RTP. The graduated steps begin after the student has a medical clearance to return to academics, and is symptom free off pain killing medicines for a full 24 hours. RTL should be an individualized steady progression with the parent’s checking the child daily for a return of symptoms and alerting you if the student is struggling so you can provide appropriate requests for medical accommodations to the school as needed. Unlike a RTP, the RTL might start at any level and progress at a rate individualized to the student’s needs and tolerance. Steps might be skipped as tolerated and might look something like this: Students with reasonable recovery times typically will get accommodations within the school by the principal. Students with protracted recovery beyond about 10 weeks, a school quarter, are likely eligible for a 504 plan or an IEP, and you might be asked to write a request to support the family at that time.

The Concussion Act of NYS
The Concussion Act of NYS took effect July 1, 2012, and requires schools to: • Educate parents, athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and school nurses on concussion, • Remove observed or suspected concussed students from play based on signs and symptoms, • Withhold further participation until evaluated by, and received written and signed authorization to return to activities from a licensed physician. • Obtain physician clearance, and when the athlete has been symptom-free off pain killing medicines for a minimum of 24 hours and allow them to begin a monitored progressive six phase return to play. MAKING A CLINICAL DETERMINATION • Symptoms: somatic (e.g. headache, nausea, dizziness), cognitive (e.g. feeling in a fog), and/or emotional (e.g. liability)
• Behavioral changes: irritability, personality changes • Cognitive impairment: Hard time concentrating, trouble remembering, not feeling themselves, being confused, thinking speed slowed down, taking a longer time to react • Sleep disturbance: drowsiness, insomnia GRADUATED RETURN TO PHYSICAL EXERTION AND ACTIVITY OR RETURN TO PLAY (RTP) This is a six step gradual return to activity. The RTP protocol may not start until an athlete is completely symptom-free for a full 24 hours off pain killing medicines, and must remain symptom-free for 24 hours following each stage before progressing further. RECOVERY Average recovery following concussion is about a week to ten days; protracted recovery with post concussion syndrome is after 21 days. Young teenage girls often have protracted recovery more than any other group. RETURN TO LEARN (RTL) More information will be forthcoming about RTL (cognitive

On Friday, September 28th, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School science teacher Laurie McMillen and her AP Biology students welcomed guest speaker Adrianna San Roman into their classroom. Ms. San Roman, a Port Jefferson graduate from the Class of 2005, is currently in her fourth year toward her Ph.D. in developmental and regenerative biology through the Biological and Biomedical Sciences program at Harvard University. During the presentation, students learned about the daily
routine of a research scientist and participated in a lesson about regeneration in the intestine. “I have always been very interested in science. I like to figure out how and why things work,” stated Ms. San Roman. “The things that I learned here at Port Jeff helped to build a very strong foundation for what I am doing now.” After high school, Ms. San Roman attended Williams College, where she was inspired to pursue scientific research as a career. She credits her recent success to her mentors, as well as to her

The 2012 Walk for Beauty, scheduled for Saturday, October 14th, at the Stony Brook Village Center, will honor breast cancer survivor Barbara Meringolo of Stony Brook, and Legends Hair Designs and Day Spa owner Patrick Parent of Selden as it sets its sights on raising funds for breast cancer research at Stony Brook University. Co-sponsored annually by Stony Brook University Hospital and The Ward Melville Heritage Organization, the Walk for Beauty has raised more than $1 million for breast cancer research since its
inception in 1994. All proceeds from the volunteer-led event go towards research and patient support; there are no administrative fees. Meringolo says she agreed to serve as the breast cancer survivor honoree for this year’s walk as a way to inspire others to support breast cancer research. “The deciding factor for me was that I am visible in the community,” she said. “If people recognize me, I feel there might be more recognition for the cause.” Meringolo was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 on her

Martyn Burk, MD, PhD, Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and a surgeon in the Division of Breast and Oncologic Surgery, performed a mastectomy at Stony Brook, and she has been cancer-free ever since. An unexpected benefit of Meringolo’s bout with breast cancer is that it led her to establish a support group for breast cancer survivors in St. James. Called the “Sisters in Pink,” the group of 20 meets monthly to provide mutual support and encouragement. “That’s the good that came out of it,” she said. “We’re just very present for one another.” Patrick Parent was chosen as the walk’s community honoree in recognition of his participation in “Cut for a Cure” for the past four
years, with proceeds benefiting Stony Brook University Cancer Center. His Legends Hair Designs also provides pink hair extensions at the Walk, with proceeds donated to the event. “Patrick also offers wigs
for cancer patients, for which he is only paid a maximum of $200 from the Walk for Beauty Unique Boutique Fund, which has been part of the walk since its inception,” said Gloria Rocchio, President of The Ward
Melville Heritage Organization, and cochair of the walk. “He picks up the remaining cost for many of these wigs, which are worth far more. These patients do not have insurance or Continued On Page 7

They say that two of the most taboo topics are religion and politics, subjects that should be avoided at all costs when in mixed company. Before I had my own legitimate opinions on such matters, I have to admit that I never understood what the big deal was. Now I get it. Especially in this day and age, with the advent of social media and the ability to post all sorts of potentially controversial tweets, status updates, photos, videos, etc.… is it any wonder that tensions tend to build to the point of heated disagreements? One day you’re “friends” – the next you’re engaged in a bitter dispute over political ideals. Some things should simply be left for private discourse.
Personally, I have always felt that, as long as your opinion is well informed and based on some sort of intelligent foundation, there should really be no need to defend it. Believe what you believe; just don’t try to impose it upon others. That’s what the politicians are for. Those basic philosophies which make us different are precisely what make our society unique – and interesting. No need to change that. When things take a nasty turn – which they inevitably seem to – whether in the form of written discourse or verbal sparring, that’s when it has gone too far. A little healthy debate is fine, and should be encouraged even. We should all be open to other viewpoints – perhaps, in our own narrow-minded tunnel vision, we may have missed some-
thing valid and eye opening. But merely shoving your unsolicited opinions down someone else’s throat is not only unnecessary, but borders on disrespectful. Voting booths are private for a reason, as are many religious institutions and practices. No one should feel obligated to defend his/her beliefs, so long as they are founded in some sort of informed, grounded philosophy. And if they aren’t, if they are merely based on a handful of regurgitated talking points or hearsay – well then, why would you want to recruit someone so ignorant to your side anyway? Better they are left to their own devices. Simply my opinion. Take it or leave it. {This message was approved by Jamie Lynn Ryan.}

Joseph Reboli, His Work…His Life will be on exhibit at the Ward Melville Heritage Organization September 30th through October 21st. This free exhibit will feature nationally acclaimed Long Island painter, Joseph Reboli, who is famous for his renderings of everyday scenes and subjects. Although he produced a series of cityscapes in the 80’s and explored Italian landscapes in the 90’s, he always returned to his primary subjects: the sites and structures of eastern Long Island and its environs. His art was influenced by Andrew Wyeth, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning and Jasper Johns. He
examined objects in the landscape - beaches, porches, chairs, trucks, gas pumps, highways, road signs, produce and flowers - whose forms and textures intrigued him. Many artists tried to paint like Reboli, but no one really ever did. His death in June of 2004 ended a career that had captivated an enormous audience of art lovers. This exhibit will include a Panel Discussion and Q&A on October 14th from 2 to 3:30 p.m. featuring Virginia Foster, Sister of Joe Reboli; Colleen Hanson, retired Gallery North Director; Howard Eskin, Collector and David Ebner, Fellow Artist and woodworker. Regional Recognition
Pride On Display Different schools and organizations throughout the district were featured at the fair and set up entertainment booths for attendees to enjoy. Just before kickoff at the big football game, representatives from each of the district’s eight schools paraded the track to display the homecoming banners their buildings had created for the annual banner contest. This year’s contest tested the students’ creativity and called for them to construct banners following the theme of “Change Happens Through...” This year’s banner contest winner was Arrowhead Elementary School.
As the clouds parted briefly, Ward Melville football players marched onto the field with an undefeated record. Although the team appeared strong for the first three quarters, it was two unexpected touchdowns in the last quarter that resulted in a 17-14 loss for the Patriots. Despite the tough loss, members of the district’s cheerleading squads kept up the crowd’s excitement with dazzling routines, and the Ward Melville marching band and color guard performed brilliantly during halftime. This year’s halftime routine was filled with Latin numbers and featured songs by Chuck Mangione.
Ward Melville High School senior Taylor Mussendon has been named one of 20 Long Island Arts Alliance Scholar-Artists for the 2012-2013 school year. Taylor was nominated for this honor by Ward Melville Chairperson for Art and Technology Jennifer Trettner and was selected based on her application, GPA, design portfolio, letters of
recommendation and personal essay. “Taylor is an amazingly talented, intelligent, determined and motivated student who excels in the graphic design program at Ward Melville,” stated Ms. Trettner. “She has a sophisticated design sense for a high school student, is articulate in her client presentations and understands the true meaning of teamwork.”

The Three Village School District community came together at the end of September to form a sea of green and gold in celebration of Homecoming 2012. Although the forecast for the weekend provided little relief from passing showers, students and residents both young and old came out in support of their hometown Patriots. As the rain forced the district to cancel the community pep rally and bonfire scheduled for Friday evening, this year’s homecoming events took place on Saturday and consisted of a widely supported carnival fair, banner parade and several athletic contests held throughout the day.
In addition to being profiled in Newsday, Taylor will be recognized at the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts on September 20 and again in the spring at a reception at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. Photo provided by: Jennifer Kuefner, Syntax

Team members and students worked together to plant flowers and butterfly bushes, create and set up pinwheels, position benches and handprint paint a birdbath in school colors - all of which were donated by local businesses. Students also decorated rocks with wishes written on them. “A dream needs to build upon something strong, which is why we chose rocks,” said Ms. Timpanaro. “It is also Prudential’s symbol and an icon of strength, stability and innovation.” Though only a handful of students were chosen to participate in the groundbreaking activities, every grade will have an
Scarecrows For The Village Minnesauke Elementary School fifth-graders and Arrowhead Elementary School sixth-graders put their creativity to the test this fall as they fashioned scarecrows for the 22nd Annual Stony Brook Village Scarecrow Contest. For their entry, the sixth-graders at Arrowhead worked with art teacher Rachel Condron to build an 8-
foot-tall scarecrow of Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte. Made of chicken wire and plaster, the students’ scarecrow was complete with a London swim cap, wooden wave boards and, of course, a gold medal. Each fifth-grade class at Minnesauke created a sports-themed scarecrow. From soccer, baseball and football to roller hockey and lacrosse, each class
each put their own twist on their displays. Both schools’ scarecrows also incorporated the event’s theme of celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The final creations are on display in the Village of Stony Brook. Winners of the contest will be announced in late October.

Ward Melville High School talented studentmusicians have once again been overwhelmingly recognized at the local and state level. This fall, 41 students were selected to participate in the 2012 NYSCAME-SCMEA AllCounty Music Festival and nine students were chosen for the 2012 NYSSMA All-State Music Conference. Additionally, 15 students were named alternates for the AllState Conference. Selection into these festivals is based on the students’ NYSSMA scores from the previous spring, as well as teacher recommendations. This year, Ward Melville students will be taking part in the following ensembles: mixed chorus, orchestra, women’s choir, band, wind ensemble and jazz band. “This is a tremendous privilege for our students,” stated Ward Melville High School music coordinator Linda Contino. “This honor enables the students to represent our district at the county and state levels. Their selection to these prestigious groups is not only a reflection of their professionalism but also the musical talents they have honed during their time of study at Ward Melville.” This year’s All-County Music Festival will culminate in a concert on November 16th at 7 p.m. at Northport High School and the All-State festival will be held in Rochester, New York from November 29th through December 2nd. Thanks to improvements in chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, there are more than 300,000 children, teens and young adults in the United States who are survivors of childhood cancer and require ongoing care. To help meet the complex needs of survivors, CCMC pediatric oncologist hematologist Jonathan Fish, MD, created the Survivors Facing Forward Program (SURFF). “Though we cannot choose our challenges,” Dr. Fish said, “Survivors Facing Forward will help survivors face the unique concerns ahead, and will advocate for your wellbeing and serve as a resource.” Survivors also know the importance of a positive attitude, a fact evident in the smiles of the hundreds present. Herzlich talked about his own successful battle with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. When he was diagnosed at age 21 before starting his senior year at Boston College, Mr. Herzlich was told that he would not be able to play football again - and may never run again. “I decided that I wasn’t going to let cancer beat me,” Mr. Herzlich

His dream of playing football pushed him to not just be a survivor, but to “be a thriver.” A three-year cancer survivor who won a Super Bowl ring with the Giants in February during his rookie season, he encouraged attendees to “fulfill your dreams.” The event, made possible by the support of Ruth and Harold Nelkin as

The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Start, a federally funded comprehensive early childhood program for income eligible families, recently released the results of its annual community assessment. The assessment measures trends related to poverty, hunger, health, employment and housing status in Suffolk County. The information gathered enabled the Children’s
Community Head Start to modify and enhance its programs and to plan services that meet the needs of the community. This year’s community assessment found that families are struggling in suburbia in the wake of the recession taht began in 2007. The county is e x p e r i e n c i n g unprecedented rates of poverty, home f o r e c l o s u r e s , unemployment and high demand for food stamps,
emergency housing and Medicaid. In addition, the Hispanic/Latino population continues to grow, increasing the need for access to programs for English language learners. Suffolk County also reports an increase in the child abuse and maltreatment reports in Suffolk County; perhaps a reflection of economic stress on families and the need for support services. A complete report of the annual community
assessment can be found on the program’s website: www.childrenscommunity hs.org. The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Starts (CCHS), with centers in Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma, provides services for families residing in 13 school districts in Central Suffolk County. Families are eligible based on household incomes that are below the federal
research report prepared by the Rauch Foundation, early childhood education “prepares children for school, and when provided in a high quality program, it can reduce grade repetition, drop out rates and juvenile delinquency.” The report further explains that high quality programs can lower future costs that the public school would otherwise assume.

years of support of the Long Island For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Program. At the tournament, Senator Johnson was pleased to join with SBPLI Executive Director Joani Madarash and Chairman Hans Zobel as SBPLI received a $25,000 grant from the
Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions, Inc. The grant will ensure that SBPLI will be able to continue to host the Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), which hosts 50 schools from Long Island, the metropolitan New York area and other states.
Open Houses Scheduled Members of the admissions staff will be in attendance to guide students and parents through the admissions process and to answer questions. The Open House program also includes useful information for recentlyaccepted students, who will have the opportunity to learn more about placement testing, academic advisement and financial aid. “Whether you have already been accepted to Suffolk County Community College or are a prospective student, making a personal visit to a campus is critical to the college decision making process,” said Joanne E. Braxton, Suffolk’s Dean of Enrollment. “We welcome students and their families to join us at our upcoming Open House, where they will find a dynamic overview of the academic programs and student support services available at the College. They will also have the opportunity
to tour the campus with student guides, who are available to answer questions based upon their own experience as students.” In light of the increased demand for access to community colleges, the best way to secure admission to Suffolk County Community College for the spring 2013 semester is to attend Open House and apply for admission early. The Ammerman Campus in Selden is located on Nicholls Road, north of Exit 62 of the LIE. The Michael J. Grant Campus is located on Wicks Road, south of Exit 53 of the LIE in Brentwood. The Eastern Campus is located on County Road 51, three miles south of the County’s Riverhead Center.Driving directions for all campus locations can be found at: http://www3.sunysuffolk.e du/About/Directions.asp.

Grant Won The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $20,000 grant from the NYS Office of Substance Abuse Services to support its addiction services in Suffolk County, thanks to the efforts of NYS Assemblyman Bob Sweeney. Specifically, the grant funds the expansion of LICADD’s Start2Stop program, which provides drug and alcohol information, solutionfocused counseling, peer support and treatment referrals to local residents of all ages. Start2Stop is a professionally facilitated support group that helps participants explore their substance abuse experiences and attitudes about drugs and alcohol, learn more about the biological/social and p s y c h o l o g i c a l consequences of use and understand the impact such use has had, and will have on their lives and relationships. The twelve week psycho-educational program is designed for individuals who have had some involvement with
drug and/or alcohol use, but may not yet be ready to seek treatment or live a substance-free life. Participants may have experienced personal or professional consequences of their substance use, or may have been arrested for a non-violent low-level offense that involved the use of alcohol and/or illegal substances. The group is also perfect for those who are awaiting placement into inpatient or outpatient chemical dependency treatment. The program is 100% confidential and open to all regardless of ability to pay. Start2Stop participants are required to abstain from any drug or alcohol use while they are enrolled in the program. Those who are unable to remain abstinent during the twelve weeks of sessions are counseled and referred for more intensive treatment. With a well-publicized opiate crisis gripping Long Island and a documented upswing in impaired driving and boating, LICADD Executive Director Dr.
Jeffrey Reynolds says support for Start2Stop comes at the perfect time. “I am grateful to Assemblyman Sweeney for helping us make this program more accessible to local residents before their use of drugs and alcohol accelerates,” he said. “This proactive approach and timely intervention will help make Suffolk County a safer and healthier place.” “Long Island continues to experience a number of well-publicized tragedies due to substance abuse. The Start2Stop program helps participants get control of their substance abuse problem before it escalates into a tragedy. While we need strong laws to deal with the results of DWI and BWI incidents, it is far better to prevent those tragedies from happening in the first place. That’s what this grant is intended to do,” said Assemblyman Sweeney. For more information about Start2Stop, or any of LICADD’s other services, please call 631.979.1700 or visit www.licadd.org.
