Circus Arts

Sixth-graders from Babylon Grade School had the opportunity to become circus performers for a day, as they showcased their newfound skills in a special assembly on February 1st in front of friends, family members, classmates and teachers. The February 1st assembly was the culmination of an exciting

week of learning, as the students had been practicing exciting circus activities like juggling, stilt-walking and devil sticks during their physical education classes throughout the week. The National Circus Project, a critically acclaimed educational outreach program that has conducted over 50,000

school workshops since 1984, conducted the assembly. Performing circus arts was an excellent way for the students to develop motor skills, hand-eye coordination and balance. The West Babylon Union Free School District recognizes the important role technology plays in providing a 21st century education and strives to be at the forefront of offering a cutting-edge learning experience. Under the leadership of Ryan Case, the district’s coordinator of student data and instructional technology, West Babylon

has a Google Apps for Education account and the ability to access the Google Apps system from any computer with an Internet connection. Students can store work using this system and no longer have to utilize flash drives. Mr. Case is working toward the establishment of a “walled garden” Gmail system for students in which they are able to send and receive email messages with teachers, administrators and other students within the district system. Another benefit of the Google Apps program is the easy implementation of the program with the Samsung Chromebook laptops that will soon be available to all West Babylon students. Each school will be obtaining 30 Chromebooks to be used in classrooms or in Chromebook Writing Labs, where students will develop writing skills and take part in local and state assessments.

Storm-Sanity By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m beginning to despise Mother Nature. More specifically, I despise those weather forecasters, news anchors and so-called “reporters” who insist on inciting what amounts to mass hysteria every time a single snowflake or shower is detected on the horizon. Honestly, have we learned nothing from Hurricane Sandy? Back in October, there was plenty of advance warning, to be sure; but how many decided against taking precautionary measures based solely on past precedent? What’s that they say about the boy who cried wolf? Oh, eventually, he will be right…but no one will listen. Fast forward to my most favorite season of all – winter –

with all its blizzards and sleet and ice storms. You know, the season where one flake in the forecast calls for widespread panic. Let’s all run in droves to the stores to snap up every last shovel and snow-blower – “just in case.” Let’s stock up on milk and eggs because, after all, once the power goes out, what better necessities to have on hand? Oh, and let’s not forget to wait in line for gas once again – you know, for all that driving we’ll surely be doing in two feet of snow. Seriously people? Personally, I’m a big fan of waking up, looking out the window and assessing the situation for myself. And if the power goes out, well that’s a whole other ballgame. Then gone are those cozy dreams of being snowed in with nothing but a pile of DVDs and books to catch up on while you bake

cookies and make hot cocoa. Honestly, the last time I truly enjoyed a “snow day,” I was probably about eight years old. It’s a bit different when you need to shovel your way out and work for a living, isn’t it fellow adults? And doesn’t it always seem that the worst weather hits right when you have a million things to do? When you have all these grand plans to be productive and proactive and all that good stuff? So much for that. Best plan: pull the covers over your head, go back to sleep and enjoy the peace and quiet. No hysteria, no stockpile of milk and eggs, no need to skate all over the roads. No sense trying to fight what you can’t control. Trust me, there is no shovel that’s a match for Mother Nature.

Catholic Health Services (CHS) recently presented its Living the Mission Award to Gene Buccellato for exemplifying the CHS mission values of respect, justice, integrity and excellence. Buccellato was nominated for his outstanding qualities and received the award from CHS’s President and Chief Executive Officer Richard J.J. Sullivan, Jr. A resident of North Babylon, Buccellato has been a Building Services staff member for CHS Services since 2011. Previously, he held the position of environmental services supervisor for CHS’s Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center, where he was honored with the facility’s PRIDE Award and served on the Mission

and Ministry Committee. Prior to that, Buccellato managed his familyoperated dry cleaning business in Amity Harbor for almost 20 years. He has been involved in Autism Speaks for more than 15 years and is a past member of the Babylon Lions Club and Sons of Italy. Buccellato was described as “never too busy to go the extra mile” by one colleague, while others commented on how he is “always there to lend a helping hand” and offers the “the same level of respect to all.” He and the other members of the Building Services team, Christopher DeRubio and Sudesh Ramsaran, were recognized at a Living the Mission ceremony in Melville. Fellow employees at CHS Services and other

subsidiaries of CHS joined them to personally offer their congratulations. CHS recently observed its 15th anniversary as an integrated health care system with a Mass of Thanksgiving celebrated by the Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, Most Rev. William F. Murphy. Attendees included Living the Mission honorees and other award winners from across CHS, including CHS’s hospitals, nursing and rehabilitation centers, home care, hospice and other programs serving Nassau and Suffolk counties. On that occasion, Bishop Murphy expressed his gratitude for the dedication and skill of the many individuals who are part of CHS.

Ensemble Performance Dozens of awardwinning musicians from Babylon High School had the opportunity to perform in front of their friends, family, teachers and classmates this week in an impressive winter concert held at Babylon High School’s Rowe Hall auditorium. Performances were made by the high

Souper Way In the spirit of the Super Bowl and doing one’s personal best to help the team, student council officers of Santapogue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District organized a Super Bowl-themed food drive, called the

“Soup-er Bowl,” to benefit a local food pantry. During the week leading up to Super Bowl XLVII, staff and students were encouraged to donate food items and place them in the basket of the team they believed would

reign victorious on February 3rd. Baskets bearing logos for the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers overflowed with food donations at the end of the week due to the generosity of those who took part. Susan Soldano, the student council

adviser at Santapogue, supervised this enterprise. The real winners were the children, who learned a lesson in character education, as well as those who were helped by their acts of generosity.
