Batavia United Way hosts holiday Adopt-A-Family

In keeping with tradition, BUW will again partner with the community to provide Christmas to Batavia families in need. Last year, they recruited over 100 sponsors to provide gifts to 140 families. They expect the need to be just as great this year. BPS101 staff identify the families who are in need of help, and sponsors shop from wish lists completed by the family. BUW also partners with area clubs who provide supplemental items such as gift cards, groceries, Christmas stockings, and more. For information on sponsoring a family or other opportunities to make the season bright, visit bataviaunitedway.org/adopt-family.

Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley offers scholarships

Exciting news for high school students! Applications for the 2022 Scholarship Program will be available soon. Scholarships are available to local students who will attend an accredited postsecondary institution within the United States on a full-time basis.

The scholarship program consists of separate scholarship funds created by individual donors who establish specific criteria for the administration of their scholarships. Students only need to complete one universal application to be considered for multiple awards. This year alone, more than 300 area students received crucial college scholarships!

Applications are due in January, and students are encouraged to plan ahead as they will need to request letters of recommendation, complete essay questions, and more. For more information on the program, please visit cffrv.org/scholarship-program.

The Rotary Club of Batavia supports many

The club is a part of Rotary International with 1.2 million members worldwide. On the international stage, the Batavia club has supported the Hearten Haiti Project, ShelterBox, and End Polio Now. Visit the website, BataviaRotaryClub.org, for more information. Don’t forget to purchase Corvette raffle tickets at BataviaRotaryCharities.com. Meet your neighbors, make an impact, and Do Something Really Great!

The Batavia Masonic Lodge 404 has a long history of service

The first Masonic lodge in Batavia was chartered in October of 1849. Lodge 73 met Wednesday evenings preceding and succeeding the full moon so members could see to get home after dark. Many prominent citizens of Batavia belonged to Lodge 73. Disbanded in October 1859, Batavia Lodge 404 (the successor to lodge 73) was chartered in October of 1864 during the Civil War.

On Oct. 8, 1973, Batavia Lodge moved to its current one story lodge building at 28 Van Nortwick in Batavia. For further information on Batavia Lodge or to become a member email batavialodge404@gmail.com.

Lions take action!

During October and November, look for Lions doing service projects around town! Lions solicited donations for vision and hearing programs for the Lions Annual Candy Day collection on Oct. 9. On Oct. 13, Lions hosted a family BINGO night fundraiser for the Batavia High School Ecology Club’s Serenity Garden project at Pal Joey’s Restaurant. Nov. 18, Lions are hosting the 5th Annual Underwear Party for United Way’s AdoptA-Family Program at Bar Evolution. Plan to join them for this event. Event details can be found on their website. Help serve Batavia! Become a Lion/Donate: batavialionsclub.org.
