Citizen of the Year and Westmont Community Awards
Westmont has incredible volunteers and our annual Westmont Community Awards Dinner is a great event for recognizing so many of our wonderful citizens. I’m extremely thankful for all of the generous people who get involved to make Westmont such a great community. Congratulations to Steve Golembiewski for being named the Westmont Citizen of the Year and all of the award winners!
Economic development update
We appreciate everyone’s interest in various areas of our community as it relates to economic development. Though we are not quite ready to make a formal announcement regarding a couple of proposals, I will simply say that the prospects are exciting. As soon as plans are finalized, we will be sure to provide the community with a complete update.
Sister City visit to Westmont in July
This July, a delegation from Hsinchu County, Taiwan will visit Westmont for the very first time since the creation of our Sister City program. This program has been amazing and such a great benefit to our community. We look forward to showing our guests everything that Westmont has to offer including our annual Taste of Westmont festival. If you have time, be sure to stop by the Taste of Taiwan food booth to sample their wonderful cuisine.

Westmont has the best summer events anywhere. Our Cruisin’ Nights was just named the best weekly summer car show in Chicagoland by WGN Radio. Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer activities in Westmont, has come and gone with another wonderful Red, White and BBQ , Race to the Flag 5K and Walk and Memorial Day Parade. If you are new to town, Westmont offers a number of community events and activities to meet the needs of adults and children alike.

Choose from a wide selection of great food options, check out cool cars on Cass, dance to live music, experience cooking demos and take-in children’s activities and more. The Westmont Street Fair is scheduled for 5–9pm on Cass Ave. in the heart of downtown Westmont.

Concerts and movies in the park
You don’t have to leave Westmont to enjoy live music movies this summer with four FREE concerts and two FREE movies. Bring your picnic baskets, lawn chairs, blankets and dance moves to our parks and enjoy evenings of outdoor entertainment. Concerts are Wednesday evenings on July 25 at Ty Warner Park, Aug. 1 at Diane Main Park, Aug. 8 & 15 both at Veterans Memorial Park. All are from 7–8:30pm. Enjoy music all summer long. There will be a movie night on July 20 and Aug. 3 at Ty Warner Park form 8:30 to 11pm. Bring the whole family and friends to shake your dance moves out with friends or enjoy a fun film in Westmont.
Independence Day celebration at Ty Warner Park
This year we celebrate Independence Day at Ty Warner Park with a bigger fireworks show than ever. Come early to enter the Red, White, & Blue Family Spirit Contest, buy a barnyard bingo deed, or try your luck in the watermelon eating contest. It’s old-fashioned fun with excellent music, kids’ games and great food. Bring your blanket or lawn chair and get a front row seat to this spectacular show. The celebration begins at 4pm, culminating in a wonderful fireworks display at 9:30pm.

rom the time before we are born through the final stage of life, the secret to a healthier, happier life is simple…just keep moving. Studies have shown that exercise during pregnancy (walking!) can result in a healthier heart for mother and baby (parent.com). At the other end of life, regular walking exercises can improve memory, relieve depression, help maintain balance, and make for an overall happier life in old age. For those of us fortunate enough to be able to walk, there is no excuse. Whatever age you are, get out and get moving. The best news is that you don’t have to be an athlete to be fit. And, you live in a community that embraces an active lifestyle for young and old. In fact, a group of Westmont residents will be combining walking exercise with one of DuPage County’s more popular events…Westmont Cruisin’ Nights. Kristina Kaniauskaite, Westmont Special Events officer manager and Jinny Szymski, Village Clerk (shown on the cover and at left) are organizing “Steppin’ at the Street Fair,” a smart way to get heart healthy while enjoying a popular event. “We’re always looking for new ways to improve our events,” said Larry McIntyre, Westmont Special Events Volunteer and Publicity Chair. “This year, we decided to add a fitness component to our Cruisin’ Nights and Street Fair events. With so many people using fitbits and other programs to count their steps, we’ve created a new program— ‘Steppin’ at the Street Fair.’” Each week at Westmont Cruisin’ Nights, participants will sign in at the Cruisin’ Nights Info Tent at Cass and Norfolk at 6pm. Then the group will see how many steps they get in over the next hour. At
7pm, participants will check back in and report how many steps they recorded. Participants will be eligible for prizes and raffles. “This will be fun for all ages,” said Village Clerk Jinny Szymski, who is an avid walker and health enthusiast. “I’m really looking forward to this new event. I can’t wait.” If you’re interested in participating in Steppin’ at the Street Fair contact Westmont Special Events at wsec@westmontevents.com or 630-829-9378. Spinning off this great idea, summer events like the Taste of Westmont in July are perfect opportunities for doing some “steppin’ at the street fair.” You’ll find great food, live entertainment, fun rides and lots of walking. When Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky of McMaster University studied the affect of exercise on mice, the results were incredible. Over the course of five months, Tarnopolsky and his team examined mice with a genetic disease that caused them to age prematurely. Half of the mice were coaxed to run three times a week on a treadmill, while the other half remained sedentary. At
the end of the study, the inactive mice were barely hanging on, while the mice that exercised were nearly indistinguishable from healthy mice. “Many people falsely believe that the benefits of exercise will be found in a pill,” Tarnopolsky said. “We have clearly shown that there is no substitute for the “real thing” of exercise when it comes to protection from aging.” (mcmaster.ca) A Time Magazine article titled “The New Science of Exercise” featuring Tarnopolsky’s study concluded that “the consequences of a sedentary life are as well documented as they are dire. People with low levels of physical activity are at higher risk for many different kinds of cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease and early death by any cause.” Luckily, the Westmont Park District offers many options for people of all ages to stay in motion and protect their health. Here are some of the special programs listed on the park district website (these programs change, so be sure to visit the website or call the park district for current program information). Steppin’ out…the secret to a healthy heart multi-level physical conditioning class for the mind and body. These classes will safely and effectively burn calories and firm you up with strength exercise, stability exercises, calisthenics, cardiovascular exercise, speed work, endurance work and plyometrics. BOSU BODY BLAST: a cardio segment to warm up your major muscles just in time to get you ready for a challenging and invigorating strength segment on the stability ball. Improve your posture, stamina, strength and coordination all in one class. GENTLE YOGA: Challenging poses to work up a sweat. INTERMEDIATE YOGA: Seated and standing positions to improve strength and balance. SHAPE UP: a complete workout with interval-training techniques, cardiovascular endurance and strength training. Shape Up includes a fun mix of step, hand weights, bands, tubing and balls. Your muscles will be constantly guessing. Participants can make the class low or high impact. ZUMBA: features interval training sessions where fast

and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. No dance experience or stepping memorization necessary. All fitness classes are free to members. Typically, classes are 60 minutes unless otherwise indicated. All fitness levels are accommodated in every class; thinking you can’t do it is no excuse. The Club Pilates in Westmont is a new addition to the healthy options in this community. Pilates teaches body awareness, good posture and easy, graceful movement. “I’m excited to bring Club Pilates to Westmont,” said Kristin Kohn. “Pilates is an exercise that’s for anyone of any age or body type. I encourage local residents to experience what our Club Pilates studio has to offer.” While there are many ways to stay active locally, studies show that only 20% of Americans get the recommended 150 minutes of strength and cardiovascular physical activity per week, while more than
half of all baby boomers report doing no exercise whatsoever. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), one of the simplest positive changes you can make to improve your heart health is to start walking. For overall cardiovascular health, the AHA recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity at least five days per week, along with moderate-tohigh intensity muscle-strengthening activity at least two days per week. For people looking to lower their blood pressure and cholesterol, the AHA recommends an average of 40 minutes of moderate to vigorousintensity aerobic activity three or four times per week. Neighbors of Westmont publisher Kate Sullivan maintains her health through regular walking, and makes exercising fun and challenging by competing in Fitbit walking challenges. “My goal is 10,000 steps each day,” Sullivan said. “I watch my diet and try to get seven hours of sleep.
Keep moving all summer… I feel better about myself and have good stamina. Recent knee surgery has been a bump in the road, but my regular walking routine has helped me along to a speedy recover.” There are many research studies being done on the benefits of exercise on cognitive health, and preliminary results indicate that physical exercise, especially aerobic exercise, can play a significant role in preventing or slowing dementia and cognitive decline. At Burgess Square in Westmont, clients are encouraged to participate in exercise programs and walking. Studies have shown that as many as 74% of seniors who exercise regularly in senior care facilities improved their scores on a standardized geriatric depression scale. Regular exercise eases depression and anxiety by releasing feel-good endorphins, natural cannabislike brain chemicals and other natural brain chemicals that enhance feelings of well-being (mayoclinic.org). According to an article published by Harvard Medical School, low-intensity exercise sustained over time also spurs the release of proteins which cause nerve cells to grow and make new connections; nerve cell growth in the hippocampus (the region of the brain that helps regulate mood) helps relieve depression. In addition to improving heart and brain health, exercise has been shown to reduce the risk for a number of cancers, including colon and breast cancer. As reported by cancer.gov, physical activity mitigates the risks of cancer in part by lowering the levels of hormones, such as insulin and estrogen, that have been associated with cancer development and progression. Exercise also has a beneficial effect on the immune and surveillance systems that detect and kill cancer cells.

If you are having a picnic with your family, make walking a part of it. Heading out for a summer concert that’s a mile or two from
home? Walk there. Going to the Arboretum? Don’t drive thru… get out of the car and walk around. Planning a vacation? Make walking a “must do” part of the plan. Think of festivals and art fairs as opportunities to walk and play. “The “Steppin’ at the Street Fair” could be more than a new weekly event in Westmont; it could be your summer motto. Village News Public Works Director Mike Ramsey receives Fuller Award

On March 21, Public Works Director Mike Ramsey received the George Warren Fuller Award from the American Water Works Association. The award was given in recognition of Mike’s commitment to the improvement of the water industry and for his leadership in the AWWA. “Mike is held in very high regard throughout the water industry,” said Steve Nero, who serves as the Westmont Public Works Committee Chair. “I think it is extremely valuable to have his leadership at work for us here in Westmont.” Mike has worked in the water profession since age 15 and has been full time with Westmont Public Works since 1986. Mike was recognized as the AWWA Water Professional of the Year in 2014 and was awarded the Clifford E. Fore Illinois Water Operator of the Year Award in 2017. The village congratulates Mike on this recognition and thanks him for his dedication to excellence.
Chief Weiss earns CFO designation On Feb. 6, Westmont Fire Chief David Weiss was re-designated as a Chief Fire Officer (CFO) by the Commission on Professional Credentialing. This designation, which is the highest level of certification for Fire Department personnel. “I have known Chief Weiss for a very long time and can say this designation is well deserved,” said Marie Johanik-Guzzo, village board member and Public Safety Committee Chair. “He does an excellent job for the Westmont community.” Chief Weiss has been an active member of the Illinois Fire Service community for over forty-five years. After retiring from the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District as Battalion Chief in 2006, Chief Weiss was hired as the Westmont Fire Chief, where he had worked part-time for seventeen years. Under his leadership, the Westmont Fire Department received its first ISO Class 1 rating from the Insurance Services Organization in 2017. The village congratulates Chief Weiss on this recent accomplishment and thanks him for his commitment to the community.

Village Finance Department earns GFOA award At a recent village finance committee meeting, Trustee Linda Liddle, who chairs the Administration and Finance Committee, thanked Finance Director Spencer Parker and the entire finance department for their excellent work. The Westmont Finance Department recently earned a Certificate of Achievement for 10
Excellence in Financial Reporting award. The village first received this award for Fiscal Year 2004, and since that time has earned numerous awards by maintaining its commitment to excellence in financial reporting. The Excellence in Financial Reporting Award represents a significant achievement and reflects the village’s commitment to meeting the highest
principles of governmental financial reporting. The GFOA’s Excellence in Financial Reporting award is the highest form of recognition in the area of Government accounting and financial reporting. Only about 12% of Illinois municipalities receive this award annually. Congratulations to Director Parker and the finance department.

Golembiewski named Citizen of the Year At the annual Westmont Community Awards Dinner on April 30 at the Hilton Chicago-Oak Brook Hills Resort and Conference Center, Steve Golembiewski was named the Westmont Citizen of the Year for his exceptional community involvement and leadership. The Westmont Chamber of Commerce hosts this annual night of celebration. Congratulations to all of the nominees and award winners. “This is quite an honor,” said Golembiewski. “I think it’s important to be involved in your community and I’m happy to be part of a community that embraces and encourages volunteerism. I’m proud to call Westmont my home.” The evening included a special presentation from Mayor Gunter and representatives from local community organizations to State Representative Patti Bellock, who will be retiring after 20 years of service to the community. Summer Learning program begins June 2 The Westmont Library kicks off their summer learning program on Sat., June 2 and continues through Sat., July 28. This summer, the youth program encourages pre-readers through teens to explore and learn by offering prizes for completing reading and activity goals. The adult program invites participants to discover new books, movies and music and attend programs for entries into monthly grand prize drawings. The program also features The Westmont Scavenger Hunt, which is a great opportunity for families to explore the community together. The library is also bringing back its Read for a Cause initiative for the youth program. When participants complete challenges, the Westmont Rotary Club will generously make a donation in their name to one of two amazing organizations—Special Olympics Illinois or the Hinsdale Humane Society. 12
“Last year, Dane had heard about the growing reputation of Westmont Cruisin’ Nights and he invited us down to the WGN studios to be interviewed,” said Larry McIntyre, Village of Westmont Communications Director. “When he came out to the show in person, he was really impressed. In 2018, Dane plans to bring his ON THE ROAD WITH DANE NEAL show out to Westmont several times over the summer. We really thank Dane for all his support.” This past April, Neal once again highlighted Westmont Cruisin‘ Nights on his program, and this time declared it to be “the best weekly summer car show in the Chicagoland area!” In 2018, there will be 13 weeks of Cruisin’ Nights starting June 7. U.S. Olympic Luge tryouts come back to Westmont
The U.S. Olympic Luge Team will return to Westmont for a record fifth time to conduct their Midwest search for future Luge Olympians. Based on hospitality and the perfect hill, Westmont is the only location in the United States to host the event more than twice. The Slider Search will take place June 16 and 17 on S. Cass Ave. between 55th St. and W. Dallas St. The USA Luge Slider Search is a program that introduces the sport of luge to young athletes ages 9–13 all across the country. The clinics utilize actual luge sleds equipped with wheels for summer use and participants are taught the basics of how to ride and steer a luge sled by U.S. Luge Team athletes and coaches. Last fall’s regional Slider Search brought more than 100 Olympic hopefuls from throughout the Midwest to Westmont. To register for the Slider Search, visit teamusa.org/usa-luge/slider-search.
Each year, the Village of Westmont and the Westmont Special Events Corporation (WSEC) organize a Community-Wide Garage Sale event, which encourages residents to hold their garage sales during the same weekend to bring out the bargain hunters en masse. This year’s event will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3–5. Garage sales will be held all days between 8am and 5pm. No garage sale permit is necessary for this specific event on these dates. The Community Garage Sale program is an ecofriendly event that provides an opportunity for people to buy and sell items that still have value rather than throwing them in the trash. The Village of Westmont always encourages people to reduce, reuse and recycle. Sign up and sale location details will be promoted on the village website at westmont.illinois.gov. Also, participants are encouraged to promote their individual sales. Printed copies of the sale addresses will be available at the Village Hall, Park District, Westmont Library, and Westmont Special Events office at Westmont Centre, 1 S. Steppin’ at the Street Fair “We’re always looking for new ways to improve our events,” said Larry McIntyre, Westmont Special Events Publicity Chair. “This year, we decided to add a fitness component to our Cruisin’ Nights and Street Fair events. With so many people using fitbits and other programs to count their steps, we’ve created Steppin’ at the Street Fair.” Every Thursday night at Westmont Cruisin’ Nights, participants will sign in at the Info Tent at Cass and Norfolk at 6pm. Then the group will see how many steps they get in over the next hour. At 7pm, participants will check back in and report how many
steps they recorded. Westmont was named a 2017 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The village also received a Tree City USA Growth Award, which recognizes Tree USA communities that demonstrate higher levels of tree care. Due to all the benefits they provide, the village encourages tree planting with locally acclimated, long-lived, diverse tree species to increase the health and vitality of our urban forest. This spring, the Environmental Improvement Committee gave away over 140 tree seedlings as part of its annual Arbor Day Tree Seedling program.

Plantings in the Downtown Central Business District Thank You Westmont Public Works New Seed Library now open at Westmont Library The Westmont Public Library opened its new Westmont Seed Library on Earth Day, Sun., April 22. Packets of tomatoes, peas, beans, and lettuce were given out on opening day. More seed varieties will be available in the future. All of the seeds available on Earth Day were donated by the Downers Grove Legacy Seed Library. In establishing the Seed Library, the Westmont Public Library partnered with Westmont High School National Honors Society students to create a space in our community devoted to harboring heirloom seeds and preserving the genetic prosperity of plants. In the coming year, the library will hold educational programs in gardening and seed saving, as well as community seed swaps. The Village of Westmont is dedicated to providing its residents and businesses with a dependable supply of safe drinking water. Each year, the village publishes the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR), which focuses on community water quality from the previous year. A requirement of the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act amendments, the report includes details about where your water comes from, what it contains, and how it compares to standards set by regulatory agencies. Westmont Village Hall and Village Department offices will be closed for a staff training event on June 19 as well as on Independence Day, Wed., July 4. Normal business hours will resume on the following day. Bill payments can be dropped off via the Village of Westmont after-hours drop box located near the entrance of the Commuter Train Station on west Quincy St. If you need the Police or Fire Department to respond to a concern, please dial 9-1-1. There will be no recycling and garbage collection on July 4 and all collection dates will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.
Stormwater management info updated on website The Village of Westmont owns and maintains a public storm sewer system, which serves the majority of the community by capturing rainwater and water runoff. To help ensure that pollution is prevented from entering the storm sewer system, the village is required to develop a stormwater management plan. The Village of Westmont’s stormwater management plan covers a broad spectrum of best management practices including street sweeping, storm sewer cleaning and recycling, as well as public education. The plan can be found on the village website at westmont.illinois.gov/stormwater. Each year, the village undertakes many infrastructure projects to maintain and improve the storm sewer system. Kids Safety Camp This summer, the Westmont Fire and Police Departments will host the 2018 Kids Safety Camp. There will be two camp sessions offered this year: Wednesday and Thursday, June 6 & 7; and Tuesday and Wednesday, July 31 & Aug.t 1. The two-day camps will be held from 9am to 3pm each day. The camp provides an opportunity for 8, 9, and 10 year old children to spend time with their local heroes and learn much more than just the usual safety lessons. Police Department National Night Out Aug. 2 at Cruisin’ Nights
“The National Night Out provides law enforcement with an opportunity to coordinate outreach in which police officers can interact with the residents they serve to foster a strong relationship,” says Westmont Police Department Deputy Chief Brian Gruen. This year, the Westmont Police Department National Night Out Event will be held on Thurs., Aug. 2, 5pm
to 9pm as part of Westmont Cruisin’ Nights and Street Fair. The National Night Out event will be held in the Manning School parking lot on Cass Ave. in downtown Westmont. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. Most cities and towns celebrate National Night Out by hosting block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and other various community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel and exhibits. Squad Cars and Fire Trucks featured at Cruisin’ Night Westmont Cruisin' Nights averages more than 250 classic cars and 2500 patrons each and every week. Two of the biggest events are Squad Car Night and Fire Truck Night. “Over the years, our Fire Truck Night has continued to get bigger and better,” says Fire Chief David Weiss. “This year is the Fire Department’s 95th Anniversary so we are going to make it even more special with a lights and sirens parade at the end of the night.” Squad Car Night will be June 14, and Fire Truck night will be Aug. 9. These events will be held on Cass
Ave. in downtown Westmont from 5 to 9pm. The event will include many activities for families including a moon jump, tours of the various police and fire department vehicles, as well as visits with McGruff the Crime Dog, Sparky the Fire Dog and Freddy the Fire Truck. Each event will end with a parade at 9pm. As always, classic cars of all makes and models are invited each and every week. “Our goal is to bring families and visitors to downtown Westmont too,” said Westmont Special Events Corp. Fire Department plans 95th Anniversary The Westmont Fire Department is planning its 95th Anniversary Celebration, which will be Sat., Oct. 13, 1 to 3pm at Johanik Fire Station, 6015 S. Westmont Word and What's Happening In Westmont projects help keep residents informed "We're already on our third issue of The Westmont Word and now we’re about to launch a new communications video project titled ‘What’s Happening In Westmont,’” said Larry McIntyre, Westmont Communications Director. The Westmont Word is published every other month and features several highlights regarding everything about Westmont from community events, economic development, upcoming programs and services, and more. Additionally, the Village of Westmont will soon be launching a new video series titled “What’s Happening In Westmont.” The videos will feature Westmont programs such as the Richmond Gardens project, the Westmont First Blue Ribbon Campaign, Steppin’ at the Street Fair, and more. “Communication is important,” said Mayor Ron Gunter. “We work hard to get the message out to the public, so we ask residents to check out our publications, the village website, and village-hosted social media so that people can stay informed.” 18

CUSD 201 dual language program is a success by Tim Wyller CUSD 201 has been building a dual language program for the last five years and will have a fully integrated kindergarten through fifth grade program starting in August for the 2018–19 school year. It has been a process getting our school culture to focus on the three goals of any successful dual language programs. They are to embrace bilingual and biliterate students, expect high academic achievement in both languages, and build a bicultural environment. We are far from finishing our curriculum and instructional work, but we have become knowledgeable in the successes of programs that work and implement strong teaching strategies. Since the 2013–14 school year, C.E. Miller Elementary has been the home of the district dual language program and has been adding a grade level at a time building the program to its current level. Similar to many other countries in the 20
world, CUSD 201 hopes to create an environment that allows for our students to have the advantages that biliteracy offers to those who maintain it after high school and college. The dual language program strives to create an appreciation for being bilingual and biliterate. The district has enlisted experts and professionals that have extensive knowledge in the systems of dual language in the United States. The district has built a bilingual library and resources for reading instruction and enrichment. Staff have been given opportunities to utilize funds to best meet their students needs. We have created positions to help our native Spanish-speaking students thrive in the classroom. Some of these positions include Spanish-speaking and Englishspeaking interventionists, special education teachers that provide reading and math interventions, an instructional coach, and an English
Language Learner specialist. One of the biggest factors that has helped the dual language program achieve great success outside of the school building has been the support from parents and the community. We have a strong Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (BPAC) network that meets numerous times each year. Parent engagement in activities and planning helps to build a richer and more diverse community. The BPAC Committee, with the support of the dual language team, celebrated their third annual Multicultural Celebration at Westmont Junior High School on May 4 from 5:30– 7:30pm. Community talks: WJHS For the last few months, several 6th–8th grade students of Westmont Junior High School participated in a new program called “Community Talks: WJHS”. In an effort to promote leadership skills and community engagement, this class served as a forum for students and community members to work together on actions to support a safe and connected village. Taught during the school day as an Enrichment Period class, the program asked students to research and identify areas of need within the Village of Westmont, and to create a TED-style presentation about their chosen cause. TED, which stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, is a media organization that creates and posts free online presentations that are informational and inspirational. The culminating activity for the Community Talks program was an evening event, hosted by students, in which they lead round table discussions with community members who assisted them in creating action plans for making improvements to the village. WJHS would like to thank all of the students and the community members who participated. In all, over 70 volunteers attended the inaugural event.

Sign up now for 2018 Kids Summer Safety Camp This summer the Westmont Fire and Police Departments will be hosting the 2018 Kids Safety Camp. There will be two camp sessions offered this year: Wednesday and Thursday, June 6 and 7; and Tuesday and Wednesday, July 31 and August 1. The two-day camps will be held from 9am–3pm each day. The camp provides an opportunity for 8, 9 and 10 year old children to spend time with their local heroes and learn much more than just the usual safety lessons. Applicants must live in or attend school within the Village of Westmont or participate in a Westmont-based Cub Scout or Brownie Troop. Around the Block™ Steppin’ At the Street Fair coming to Westmont Cruisin’ Nights This year, a new fitness component will be added to the Cruisin’ Nights and Street Fair events. Each week at Westmont Cruisin’ Nights, “Steppin’” participants will sign in at the Cruisin’ Nights Info Tent at Cass and Norfolk at 6pm. The group will then see how many steps they get in over the next hour. At 7pm, participants will check back in and report how many steps they recorded. People’s Resource Center expands Clothes Closet hours Due to an increase in demand, People’s Resource Center (PRC), Westmont has added a new Clothes Closet shift Monday afternoons from 1–2:45pm. Families and individuals can also ‘shop’ on Monday mornings, 8:30–11:15am and Thursday afternoons from 1–2:45pm. In 2017, 10,021 items of clothing from the PRC Clothes Closet were distributed to local residents. They chose from gently-used suits, women and men’s clothing, baby, toddler and children’s wear, shoes and undergarments. People’s Resource Center assists low-income DuPage County residents with basic needs such as food, clothing and emergency mortgage/rent assistance while providing job assistance and classes in computer training, literacy and art.
