“Anil listened to what we wanted and showed us a variety of places. We ultimately chose a home that we’d seen before but thought was out of reach. Anil helped to negotiate the purchase and made the transaction with the vendors friendly and smooth.” “Anil made selling my home painless. He went above and beyond, helping me in areas that were way out of his job description.”

“Our housing needs were very specific and, as we searched Toronto for months together, it seemed like Anil became family. He was always interested, patient and positive - even when it seemed like we would not find anything that suited our needs. When Anil sent us the listing for what is now our new home, it was further proof that he had been listening very carefully to what we were saying.”

OMA CHIROPRACTIC

Inspire Hope, Build Health, Celebrate Life Have you ever stepped into a building and felt immediately calm - as if the environment is radiating a warm, welcoming energy? That is exactly what happens when you walk through the doors of OMA Chiropractic, on the corner of Queen and Munro, near Broadview. The high ceilings, exposed brick walls and large windows produce such a mellow ambiance that it’s easy to imagine curling up like a cat in a sunbeam in this exceptionally restful clinic. Dr. Adrienne McRuvie and Dr. Karen Jongedijk have been operating OMA Chiropractic for nine years, learning about the neighbourhood and the clients who live here. As the community changed, the doctors saw that the new residents tended to be creative, healthy and wellnesscentred, and wanted services for every member of the family, including babies. The doctors welcomed this interest, as it fit their own belief that a comprehensive approach to maintaining health is in a family’s best interest. While it might surprise adults, Dr. Adrienne explains that, “Little children are very responsive to treatment. They don’t need the same kind of care to resolve a problem because they haven’t developed long-term patterns of behaviour.” As an example, she points to the discomfort some newborn babies experience as a result of a vacuum delivery, which can put a lot of traction on the infant’s neck. “With the pressure you would put on your eyelid, adjustments can be done that make them feel much better. “And sometimes we see colic in little ones whose digestive systems are not mature. If we support the whole system, we can often relieve those symptoms as well.” Further along the age spectrum, OMA offers specialized treatment for people who

We create caring relationships with people because we really love what we do and, as many people know, supportive relationships can be a key factor in a healthy life.”

have suffered a workplace or sports injury. Neurological conditions can be effectively treated by specialized chiropractic care, as many hockey lovers have learned by following the news about Sidney Crosby. And repetitive strain disorders can be resolved as well. By providing their clients with a full range of health-oriented services, the centre can address a variety of problems. In fact, says Dr. Adrienne, “We’re absolutely helpful in making people good, rather than just okay. We’re able to help them get through the initial pain of an injury and then offer suggestions for lifestyle changes that support continued health.” It is the emphasis on mind/body wellness that makes OMA truly unique. The doctors have multiple degrees between them and personal interests in meditation and yoga. This multi-disciplinary approach to their own fitness is expressed in the clinic, which features a collaborative team of chiropractors, a naturopath, massage therapists, a kinesiologist, a doula (birth coach) and a yoga teacher. As Dr. Adrienne says, “Sometimes people come in here and I have to put out their fire. But I would rather celebrate their lives with them so they can do all the things they would like to do. We create caring relationships with people because we really love what we do and, as many people know, supportive relationships can be a key factor in a healthy life.” One last thought for those who are looking forward to the first days of spring: “We’re here to support families through all the seasons, but specifically as people of all ages get outside and use their bodies. We welcome everyone, from babies to grandparents!”

The Voice of Style Jane Hall

Jane Hall is an iconoclast in the Canadian world of interior design. Where so many contemporary designers are opting for understated, almost forgettably neutral foregrounds and backgrounds, Jane’s work is a vibrant riot of colour that delights the soul and the senses. With 36 years of experience, and a style that incorporates bold chromatic palettes with lush European fabrics and unique furnishings, she shares the same design sensibilities as London’s Tricia Guild.

While many in Toronto are re-working the Bauhaus aesthetic, Jane is an unrepentant lover of the sensual delight created by the touch of a lush fabric or the sight of contrasting prints. Inspired by films like ‘Moulin Rouge’ and the recent series ‘Downton Abbey,’ Jane will pair the textures of an English embroidered satin with an antique tufted cotton to create an immediate emotional response and a conversation between the senses. With her strong views about design, art and human imagination, Jane stands steady in the face of the current pre-occupation with minimalism. She points out that Bauhaus was about design for the general population, and easily makes the leap between the ideas behind early Bauhaus and the current trend toward mass-production of home furnishings in China. When asked how she engages clients on a ‘made in China’ budget while her fabrics

are imported from Italy and England, Jane says, “I tell them it’s an investment. I’m about quality, not quantity. “Today’s consumers value things differently than they did in the past. It’s about more, as opposed to less.” It’s also about longevity in a society that has embraced disposability. People are not concerned about the integrity or craftsmanship of a cushion or a drape because inexpensive things are not expected to last. “I hear people say, ‘I’ll throw it out if it doesn’t last a year.’ In our parents’ generation, they saved for something and it lasted their entire marriage. “My belief is that one should create something that is beautiful and sustainable,” says Jane. “It should also be individualistic. I don’t want my clients’ house to look like their neighbours’ house. The problem with globalization is that everything is made en masse: it’s cheaper to make things square

rather than round, or to make things in one colour rather than six. The real cost is the loss of individuality of expression.” As a businesswoman, part of Jane’s mission statement, is to contribute as much as possible to the local economy. While I do import the best fabrics I can, the drapes and pillows are made locally. And they last. The furniture I make will be something the client can pass down to the next generation.” As for thoughts on what can be done to freshen up a tired home, Jane says she often goes into a house to suggest new colours for paint, a new layout or reupholstering of the current furniture or just the idea of new throw cushions. “It’s like staging a house. Some people have lovely things but just don’t display them well. I might take a little lamp and make a custom lampshade for it, paint an accent wall, create some new bedding or change the cushions. “I think my cushions are one of the best

“My cushions are one of the best things I do. They can change your décor amazingly. I call it ‘decorating on a budget.”

things I do,” says Jane. “I use Tricia Guild fabrics and they are beautiful. They can change your décor amazingly. I call it ‘decorating on a budget.’” Another thing Jane does is get people started on their own home decorating projects by taking them on a ‘magical mystery tour.’ “I’ll take clients shopping at all my favourite antique shops or special sources. I’ve been in the business for a long time and can tell them where to get everything at the right cost. There are so many great places in this city that people don’t know about. It’s really fun and I just charge them for a day of shopping.” The last item on her list of services may be the best of all. Jane’s website is a one-stop shop for thousands of inspiring design ideas, and it incorporates everything she has learned in her career with her encyclopedic knowledge of design and history. “Currently, I have about 100,000 images on my computer,” she says. “The colour guide has always been the number one landing page and I get several thousand hits a month. In a few weeks I’ll be expanding this to provide room and fabric inspirations based on a colour group. There will be hundreds of images on a 3D wall that will allow subscribers to buy the products they see online. “So many people choose beige or grey because they don’t know how to put things together, but I know that people want colour. The number one thing that holds them back is confidence. This site shows people what works.” If you are interested in Jane’s services or in attending one of her workshops on the Use of Colour and The History of Design, among others, contact her at janehalldesign@gmail.com or call 647-854-7284. Fifteen years ago, Greentea Design owner Dale Storer started bringing in unique pieces and exclusive designs to his loft showroom in Riverdale. The Japanese aesthetic heavily influenced the collection, which today includes full custom kitchens, bathroom vanities, entertainment centres and a variety of antiques. “Our kitchens are very well received, as they imbue such a wonderful warmth,” says Dale. “The cabinets are constructed from solid reclaimed wood and our customers can choose from a variety of stains, door styles and beautifully hand-forged hardware.” Other popular pieces include stunning Maru Tables (dining and coffee) made from three-inch thick slabs of antique Korean flooring, and the iconic Kaiden Tansu. “Our Step Chests are modular, work as room dividers, and make incredible conversation pieces, while still offering practical storage.” Dale selects each antique piece personally and finds that certain priorities usually win out. “I look for interesting patina or distressing that has naturally occurred and that speaks to the provenance of the piece,” he says. “Unique architectural shapes and the repurposing of objects to give them a new life are my other passions.” www.neighbourhoodliving.com | | Neighbourhood Neighbourhood Living Living | http://neighbourhoodliving.dgtlpub.com

Inspire Gifts & Home Decor “Customers have commented on the fact that they no longer have to go far from home to buy interesting things.”

F

or Laura Gill, necessity really is the mother of invention. A long-time resident of the Danforth and Greenwood area, Laura was frustrated she had to travel outside of her neighbourhood to shop for special occasions. “I wanted to spend my money locally, but I always had to go to malls or at least west of Pape,” said the former ESL teacher and government worker. Rather than wait for someone else to fill an obvious need, Laura decided to open Inspire Gifts and Home Decor at 928 Danforth, just east of Jones, in November 2008. “My customers – most of whom either live or work in the neighbourhood – comment that they no longer have to go far from home to buy interesting things,” says Laura. Inspire sells a wide variety of intriguing gifts and items for the home, from Bali

wind flags and Buddhas to Haitian Oil Drum Art and African and Oriental decor; from CASA candles to curtains to cast iron gardenware; from ESPE wallets and handbags to jewellery; from lamps and night lights to solar butterflies. Among the most popular items shoppers will find amidst the treasures at Inspire are Caroline Bousquet hand-painted glassware from Quebec and Benaya ceramic tiles and bistro tables. With so much to choose from – and 90 per cent of items priced between $4 and $40 – most people who visit the store leave with something special: a bamboo vase, a clock, a cushion or just a greeting card. Which gives Laura tremendous satisfaction. “Inspire is not just my store. It belongs to the neighbourhood.” Laura Gill Inspire Gifts and Home Decor 928 Danforth Ave. 416-466-1095 info@inspirehomedecor.com www.inspirehomedecor.com

With carpets, it’s personal There

are more than 900 area carpets at Larshar Rugs on the Danforth, and owner Hossein Rafat knows every one of them. Almost all are

painstakingly hand-dyed and hand-knotted with meticulous old-world craftsmanship in Iran, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and Turkey. Some, like the incomparable 7 x 10 Persian rugs made to last generations, can take more than a year to create.

“Every carpet has a story,” says Hossein, who has been buying and selling quality floor coverings for 12 years. And, like the customers who come into his store looking for a one-of-a-kind carpet, no two stories – or handmade rugs – are exactly the same. “This one,” he says, exposing a rug of rich umber, ochre and espresso after folding back layer upon layer of exquisite colours and patterns – Tabriz, Isfahan, Kashan – “is an Abadeh Shiraz (named after the tribe and the region), where they are doing some of the finest work.” The rug is rare, says Hossein – a ‘wrong,’ because the colours are uncharacteristic among the traditional reds and blues of Persian rugs – which makes it that much more valuable; that much more irresistible.

12

|

Neighbourhood Living |

“That is the way it is with Persian carpets,” Hossein says. “When a rug is right for you, it grabs you.” In Qum (pronounced Ghom), they make only silk rugs. The reason they are so beautiful, he says, is because they wash the silk in the salty lake that borders the city. The silk is superb and these are the most expensive silk carpets in the world. Born in Iran, “the Mecca of carpets” and the birthplace of the Persian rug with its superior wool and 65 different kinds of knotting (other countries use only 10 to 15 knots), Hossein travels to the Middle East every year and handpicks his wares. “Lashar Rugs is the secret of the Danforth,” says Hossein, who has been at his present

www.neighbourhoodliving.com

two-floor location for four years. “There is no other store like it.” The carpets, yes, they set Lashar apart, he admits, but it is more than this that makes his store so unique. “Our prices are much lower than you will find anywhere else – less than half of what the big name carpet stores are charging,” says Hossein. “But the biggest difference is that we’re a neighbourhood store. We take time with our customers. We do our best to accommodate them. In this store, you can bargain. If you make a reasonable offer, you will definitely get your carpet. And if you can’t find what you want, we’ll find it for you ... or we’ll have it made for you.” And if you’re not sure it’s perfect, or you’re

torn between several different rugs, you can take them home and try them out for 48 hours. Hossein will drop them off at your house, lay them down, then pick them up two days later. “We try very hard to please.” If money is a problem, “no problem,” says Hossein, who now offers a layaway plan. “And we also provide guaranteed cleaning and repair services,” with discounts for rugs that were purchased at his store. “You don’t just come in and buy a carpet,” says Hossein. “We build a relationship. We talk and I really care. I will come to your house, look at your space, look at the carpet with your furniture. I want to be sure that what you buy is going to be right for you.” Customers may come back three, four, five times to look at the same rug – or at every rug in the store. Each time, they learn a little bit more about Hossein and he learns a little bit more about them. He wouldn’t have it any other way. “That’s the beauty of this business,” Hossein says. It’s not just about selling. “When I have a customer they become a lifetime friend.”

Changing for the Better

“What the market does and what I do have to be in sync. I must have a clear grasp of current

FATIMA BREGMAN Sales Representative

market conditions and act on them quickly ... and negotiate with strength and skill.”

Since real estate agent Fatima Bregman was showcased in Neighbourhood Living a year ago, her life – and her career – have advanced at a breathtaking clip. NL caught up with Fatima during some rare down time to ask her about the developments, big and small, that have marked her progress to spring 2012 and what they mean to her, to her current and prospective clients and to the neighbourhood. NL: What are the important changes in your life in the past year? FB: Some changes have just happened and others have been deliberate. Both have been beneficial. I have gained another year of experience as a real estate professional and a mom, I have continued to be an active member of my Riverdale community, and I have retained close and supportive relationships with family, friends and clients. There is good balance and integration among all aspects of my life, which makes it particularly rewarding. I’ve also made two critical choices, and I’m so glad I did. The first was to put together a strong support team to raise my client service to the highest possible level. The second was to switch to RE/MAX Hallmark Realty Ltd.

Daiva Vorps and and Patrick Lightheart, Assistants to Fatima Bregman.

|

Neighbourhood Living |

www.neighbourhoodliving.com

NL: What does the change to RE/MAX Hallmark mean for you, your clients and your community? FB: It means a great deal. RE/MAX Hallmark is the number one RE/MAX franchise in the world, with a strong presence and market share in Riverdale, Leslieville and the Beaches. The RE/MAX Hallmark brand has enormous value – promising and delivering a level of support to agents and clients that is unsurpassed anywhere. Most people don’t realize that RE/MAX Hallmark owns its own training centre fo;r the sole purpose of raising

agents’ standards of practice on a continuing basis. Every day there is some compelling learning opportunity: to apply fresh technological innovation, to gain continuing education credits or to share with clients up-to-the-minute data on developments in our industry. With RE/MAX Hallmark, my clients can be sure I am on the cutting edge of everything they want and need in an agent. RE/MAX Hallmark also shares my passion for supporting our communities in the things that are important to us all. In the past year, I’ve contributed a week at my cottage in Prince Edward County to a number of silent auctions to benefit local schools and Toronto-wide charities. Right now, I’m raising funds for women’s services at the Fred Victor Mission, a project I became involved with through one of my clients. It’s exciting and deeply satisfying. NL: What did you bring to RE/MAX Hallmark? FB: Five years of amazing experience with my former agency and colleagues that gave me a solid grounding in all aspects of real estate! I also brought a visible record of sales and client satisfaction, a good reputation with my peers, a positive, ego-free personality and – I’m proud to say – consummate professionalism. NL: What is your role with your staff team and how do they support you? FB: My team comprises people with many general and specific skills – administrative, supervisory, communications, marketing, aesthetic – and members use their skills to maximize client service. I foster a climate of collaboration to bring out the best in everyone, and there is great rapport among the team. I am the agent, however, which means I am the one clients can expect to do their home evaluation, staging, marketing plan, open houses, negotiation – whatever it is they need through the home buying and selling process.

NL: What can residents of Riverdale, Leslieville and the Beaches expect from the real estate market and Fatima Bregman in 2012? FB: Because RE/MAX Hallmark has exceptional reach and sales volume throughout the GTA, residents – clients or prospective clients – can expect me to deliver a level of service second to none, wherever they live or wherever they want to buy. What the market does and what I do must be in sync. People can expect me to have a clear grasp of current market conditions and to act on them quickly. Right now, new Canadians and growing prosperity in Toronto are creating demand for larger homes, but few are available. With limited supply and significant demand, a lot of people are bidding for the same property. In this situation, only the best agents can succeed and you have to be at the top of your game at all times. People can expect me to negotiate on their behalf with strength and skill. Thankfully I have extensive experience with multiple offers and that’s a huge asset. And because I work collaboratively, I have gained the respect of other agents, which makes for a smooth negotiation process and an optimal result. Last year I told Neighbourhood Living I wanted to be a ‘realtor’s realtor.’ That’s a tall order, but every time I win for a client I feel I’m getting one step closer.

Fall in love with your backyard Ralph Beder, owner of Symmetry Landscape Design/Build Corporation, has been designing and building custom landscapes in the Toronto area for more than 25 years. A resident of the vibrant Danforth area since 1990, Ralph has noticed how neighbours have become increasingly invested in caring for their properties and homes. “Not only do residents enjoy the eclectic neighbourhood feel with its many restaurants and shops,” he says, “but they also enjoy the convenience of having downtown Toronto and major highways on their doorstep. People are moving into the Danforth and staying.” As real estate prices soar, says Ralph, it’s more important than ever to take care of and beautify our living spaces – including our front and backyard gardens. “Our properties are city-lot sized, but a small lot can feel spacious and airy when a space is well thought out and arranged.” Whether you need a safe play area for your kids, a barbecue zone that is fit for a chef or a tranquil patio for lounging and entertaining, Symmetry Landscape is ready to provide practical and attractive design/build solutions. “Taking the warmth and style you enjoy inside your home and using it to create an outdoor room that will give you equal pleasure is what I do best,” Ralph says. “From roomy spaces that are wonderful for entertaining, to intimate retreats for your family, I create gardens to suit every taste and need.” Ralph takes tremendous pride in his attention to detail, while following the design principles of form and function. “Creating and enhancing spaces that are meaningful to you is the goal of all Symmetry Landscape Design/Build projects,” says Ralph, whose own garden, pictured here, was transformed from an unusable piece of ground to a peaceful sanctuary. The project was completed in phases so it wasn’t long before Ralph and his wife Kym were able to relax with their dog Tia and enjoy the shady space. Summer is just around the corner and the outdoors will soon be beckoning. Why not let Ralph Beder and Symmetry Landscape create an exterior space that will improve the form and function of your garden and bring you enjoyment for years to come? food and celebration

Cooking it up in Lisa Shamai’s Kitchen

Lisa Shamai loves to cook. And that’s a very good thing for the neighbourhood. A George Brown graduate, Lisa apprenticed at Fenton’s, then started her own catering business – Lisa Shamai Cuisiniere – from her tiny bachelor apartment in 1986. She soon took over an existing catering business and moved to a small commercial kitchen. “I worked my butt off,” she recalls with a laugh. “I thought, ‘The day I have someone to do dishes, I’ll have it made,’ then ‘the day I have someone to do my deliveries,’ then ‘the day I have someone to do my accounting.’ I kept growing and every time I took that next step it was so exiting. All my wishes came true.” Her business was booming, so Lisa

decided to open a funky cafe in the space next to her third kitchen. When the light industry area transitioned to residential, she closed up the cafe to refocus on catering, moving across the street to her present location at 388 Carlaw Avenue, between Dundas and Gerrard. It was then that her husband, Mike Ryan, joined her as office manager. They have been working happily together since 2004, operating a fleet of bright pink vans and satisfying the catering needs of a voracious clientele. With a dozen full-time staff in the kitchen, Lisa Shamai Cuisiniere caters to hundreds of corporate clients, including the Globe

and Mail, Rogers and McDonald’s Head Office. “Our food rocks!” says Mike, who credits the success of the business, in large part, to the staff. “Most of the people who work for Lisa have been with her for more than a decade. There is consistency and commitment in our kitchen and therefore in the quality of our food.” Most of the chefs were trained by Lisa, and for many, this is the only kitchen in which they’ve ever worked. “Because I hired them at the start of their career, I have been able to teach them to take extra care in their preparation and presentation. It wouldn’t even cross their mind to look for a shortcut. No one has a nine to five mentality. My chefs all take pride in their work and they love it. And I think that makes a big difference.” So does the menu, which is as diverse as it

is extensive. There are more than 200 items on the core menu, with seasonal selections like garlic scape pesto and asparagus vinaigrette, made with locally grown produce. And it’s all prepared fresh. “We offer a bit of everything,” says Mike. “Thai, Indian, Italian. Tastes from around the world. What we call ‘Toronto food.’” Lisa writes her own recipes and asks her staff for suggestions. “I’ll find out what they eat on special occasions in Burma, for example, get them to share their traditional family recipes – or ask,’If you were going back to Columbia for a visit, what is the first thing you would eat? What do you miss the most? – and adapt it for our menu. That’s how we get all our international flavours.” And their hors d’oeuvres are to die for, from traditional coconut shrimp and Thai spring rolls with chili lime dipping sauce, to chicken pecan fillets with hickory poppy seed dipping sauce, to grilled black and white sesame tuna, to dried pear slices topped with black river cheddar cheese and caramelized maple walnuts, to wild rice and corn pancakes. Which makes Lisa Shamai Cuisiniere the perfect choice for every social function – office parties, weddings, private dinner parties, backyard barbecues – regardless of budget. Customers can purchase a customized fully catered event or select their options a la carte. “We work with our clients to make it affordable,” says Mike. Lisa even offers Cooking Class Dinner Parties and Team Building Cooking Classes in the client’s home or in her commercial kitchen, which has an adjacent ‘Rainbow Room’ for dining. Part of Lisa’s life mission is to teach people to embrace a healthier diet. “I want to spread the word about healthy food. Eating well is so important for the prevention of diseases likes diabetes, arthritis, cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and heart disease.” She’s doing that by unfurling her philanthropical wings through her CHOW program (Cooking Healthy on Whatchagot). Lisa is involved with Toronto East Social Services and the Riverdale Food Working Group (RFWG), educating people who are on limited budgets about food and teaching them to stretch their grocery

money while cooking healthy, homemade meals for their families. It was there she met David Kearney, a well-known social advocate, who has been working with Lisa Shamai Cuisiniere for the past year. Lisa also spends two days a week at Wellspring, a wellness centre for cancer patients, where she teaches survivors how to eat well and avoid a recurrence and she’s turning her attention to schools, teaching classes at Jackman Daycare and Earl Grey Public School. “It is very gratifying,” says Lisa, who wants to translate her knowledge and skills into action to benefit her neighbourhood and community. This is the 12th year Lisa Shamai Cuisiniere has cooked for 350 marginalized women on International Women’s Day. At the end of a regular workday, any food she has left over is packaged up and delivered to

Touchstone, a youth shelter at Pape and Cosbourn. Lisa also captains a walking team each year in the 60K Weekend to End Women’s Cancer. And she environmentally conscious, too. “We haul all our compostables home each week because we don’t have pickup at the kitchen.” This is her neighbourhood, and she works tirelessly to nurture it. “I love it here. It’s just a wonderful mix of friendly and engaging people of every income level and nationality,” she says. “There is such an incredible sense of community and belonging. I can’t imagine living or working anywhere else.”

Fresh from the sea Situated on the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula, Greece is surrounded by water on three sides: the Ionian Sea on the west, the Mediterranean Sea on the south and the Aegean Sea on the east. With so much of nature’s bounty right on the doorstep, it’s little wonder that fish features

heavily in the traditional Greek diet ... and on the menu at Avli Restaurant on the Danforth. “We offer a huge selection of fresh fish and seafood year round,” says Lambros Vassiliou, who imports ethically harvested sea bass, red snapper, baby cod, Atlantic salmon, mackerel, sardines, shrimps, scallops, mussels and octopus, much of it from the waters around Greece itself. Whole fishes, like sea bass, red snapper and sardines, are done on the grill, in the Mediterranean way, with olive oil and lemon juice. House specialities include scallops in a blackberry reduction, grilled mackerel with sweet red beet horseradish, shrimp in a fennel and ouzo cream sauce, and Avli’s signature seafood pie. This unique homemade pot pie – with a wine, tomato and olive oil base, and stuffed with shrimp, scallops, salmon, mussels and sprinkled with feta cheese – is like a Greek style bouillabaisse. “Fish is traditional fare in Greece,” says Lambros, whose modified recipes are centuries old. “In other Greek restaurants you will find a lot of meat on the menu. But in Greece, where it is hot, meat is not an everyday meal. Fish is a Greek specialty and that’s why we make it a specialty at Avli.” Not that the chefs shy away from hearty meat dishes. Rabbit, lamb and chicken pot pies are very popular with patrons, and Avli’s lamb shank has been the restaurant’s best seller for 17 years. “But anyone who has been to Greece is going to come in and ask for fish. Our customers say that our grilled octopus is the best on the Danforth and our tender, lightly breaded calamari is unbeatable.” With Easter just around the corner, customers can look forward to magiritsa, a special organ soup made with green onions, dill and augolemono that the Greeks eat to break their 40-day fast before their traditional lamb dinner on Easter Sunday. To celebrate the holiday, Avli will be offering magiritsa, roasted lamb, and the traditional red eggs, the latter on the house. “We boil the eggs and die them red. In the Greek tradition, you smack the eggs together with your family and friends. The person whose egg doesn’t crack is the lucky one!” But you don’t need luck to enjoy a delicious meal at Avli. Just Lambros, who is keeping Greek culinary culture alive with a contemporary twist that keeps customers coming back for more.

Aren’t we all ready for the excitement that spring brings as people throw off their dark winter clothing and look for a bold flash of colour? A walk down Queen Street and The Danforth at this time of year is a sensual, spirit-lifting experience, as new window displays show off what’s in store for summer. In this issue, NL presents a tour of neighbourhood designers who have helped to make the area a destination for shoppers with an eye for style and an interest in supporting Canadian artisans. These seven fashion-savvy merchants have made a name for themselves because their ideas are fresh, their relationships with their customers are strong and their search for for quality accessories is inexhaustible. The shops featured in the following pages are part of the fabric of our communities, vibrant places that we have come to love and others are thrilled to discover. If you haven’t found your way to their shops yet, plan a fun day out with a girlfriend and see what these women and men have been up to over the winter. Each one has a unique take on fashion and all of them confidently play with colour, design, fabric and pattern, and can help you put together a look that will shake off the winter blahs. Check out Christina Bergstrom Original’s exposed brick studio near Broadview. Easily one of the best renos on Queen, Bergstrom is an airy place with plenty of room to try on Christina’s own designs. Blouses, jackets, dresses and skirts speak to those who love bold prints and simple cuts that move easily from a day at work to a night out. Add a pair of ELNaturalista shoes and you are good to hit the dancefloor. Connie at Studio Fresh has a shop piled high with her trademark creations of off-kilter, one-of-a-kind tops, skirts, tunics and dresses. Fans will be on the lookout for her spring line that features sexy cutout fabrics that can be paired in layers with comfy form-fitting knits. Take a look at the jewelry cabinet and you will see creations by the Barber’s Daughter – a new fave of Halle Berry. And if you thought you knew what Margot at Any Direct Flight was all about – take another look. Alongside designers like Didier

Parakian and Montreal’s Veronique Miljkovitch, you will find Margot’s own sought-after creations. And now, you can shop the racks while enjoying a little restorative refreshment! That’s right, Margot has incorporated a new coffee bar into Any Direct Flight, so you can have a latte and a leisurely look at all those fine spring fashions. At Posh, in The Beach, Aileen is just back from L.A., inspired and ready to show you the hottest trends from new designers and trusted favourites that will make this season stand out. Sleek, fashion-forward black numbers that flatter any body type are only a few feet away from crazy printed shifts that speak to your inner Bollywood babe. Aileen loves clothes and can find you something for weekday work as well as weekend weddings. Up on The Danforth, take a look at Incanto. Beachers will know Marina from her shop at Kippendavie and will be glad to see she has cool new digs near Broadview. This larger space allows her to show even more of the pieces that she loves to collect from Italy and European fashion hot spots. Incanto is one of the few stores in the neighbourhood that sells the Sunlight brand from France and Marina is discovering a range of good new Canadian designers as well. For those of you who who love the look and feel of environmentally sustainable organic products – especially ones that are made from bamboo – walk through the doors at Do Bamboo on Danforth and run your fingers across those towels and sheets while you lust after oh-so-soft T-shirts, jackets, pants – even onesies that are gentle enough to lay next to baby’s sensitive skin. Impossible to resist! Finally, show your bling diva a little love when you stop in to see Cheryl at Zilberschmuck – a jewellery and fine art gallery that features exhibitions and beautiful things by Canadian artisans, from finely crafted gold and silver jewellery, to ceramics and glass, to wood and fibre art, to etchings, paintings and photographs. There are only five galleries of its kind across the country and Zilberschmuck is the only one in Toronto. Enjoy your walk! www.neighbourhoodliving.com |

Ici Paris Skin Care Clinic and Spa

Toronto’s Best Kept Secret It

would be hard to find a woman in downtown Toronto who

does not know Ici Paris. Renowned for its European skin care techniques and high quality products, Ici Paris has long been a resource for women who need the expertise of owner Gordana Tirnanic, lead aesthetician, Mareena Ostrovsky, and all the highly

“Dedication to professionalism has drawn clients back to Ici Paris for more than 25 years.”

trained staff. As Mareena notes, Europeans have always had a deeply holistic approach to skin care, backed up by scientific research, and this orientation forms the basis of the treatments offered by Ici Paris. The staff comes from the Former Yugoslavia, Russia, Serbia and other Eastern European countries – and all are experts in their particular fields. With specialties in laser treatments, electrolysis and herbal regimens, they are constantly upgrading their skills by attending lectures and demonstrations. On an initial visit, a free skin analysis is done to determine the age-appropriate care plan and the clinician who is most suited to the client’s needs. The full services of the team are then made available to make sure that the best results are achieved over time. This long-term commitment to clients distinguishes Ici Paris from other spas that provide the quick fix of the Botox look popularized by Hollywood. Mareena says, “This dedication to professionalism

has drawn clients, including celebrities, back to Ici Paris for more than 25 years.” Today Gordana and Mareena are happy to see the daughters and granddaughters of their first clients. “If young women come in with their parents, we can emphasize that it is important to maintain the health of the skin.” They can do this by moisturizing, applying sunscreen and cleansing properly at home to avoid bacterial infection. If acne is a concern, the team at Ici Paris can develop a customized clear skin program with some very effective herbal treatments. “We know we can deliver results even if the person doesn’t do anything at home, but this is not satisfactory to me because it is temporary. The most important thing is the education that will produce long-lasting effects.” Because the skin is the largest organ of the body, a healthy body will help to determine the health of the skin – and that goes for women and girls of all ages. It is a European belief that proper skin care is a modest investment, not an extravagance. By adhering to a consistent skin care routine at home, and visiting Ici Paris regularly for holistic treatments, clients get results. “Women receive compliments from their girlfriends because they are aging gracefully – naturally – using techniques and products that we have chosen just for them.”

The Flying Yogi A Yoga Like No Other Beatrix

‘Trixie’ Montanile is the visionary behind The Flying Yogi (TFY), a unique yoga studio located in the Wrigley Building on Carlaw. The practice at TFY involves the use of an adjustable foam-insulated sling, with accompanying straps that are attached to the ceiling. Yogis carefully lift themselves with the straps and then float suspended above the ground, spines supported, allowing them to safely acquire the health benefits of inversion postures. Like participants in an aerial ballet, class members move through a

series of defined exercises, strengthening their core and toning their muscles. It is beautiful to watch and has enough variation that it is demanding for beginners as well as advanced yogis. As Trixie says, “It’s a workout that’s disguised as play.” This particular form of ‘flying yoga’ began in California, although the knowledge that there are health benefits to reversing blood flow by standing on one’s head (inversion) has been around for centuries. In modern times, Iyengar Yoga, well known for its use of props and blocks to aid alignment, also

uses ropes to support practitioners in an upside-down posture. It was while studying Iyengar Yoga in India years ago that Trixie was introduced to this practice and experienced its benefits. Like many other practitioners and instructors, Trixie was initially drawn to yoga in an attempt to deal with chronic neck and back pain, in her case caused by spinal injuries. Inversion provided her relief that she had never before experienced. Unfortunately, though, the ropes at Iyengar were uncomfortable and, as well, Trixie became bored just hanging upside down. It wasn’t until a trip to California a few years ago that she saw what she had long been looking for: “A simple, userfriendly, safe and comfortable strap design that would support an interesting series of postures.” She put her teaching skills to use and developed what is now a renowned program that incorporates the new mechanism. The Flying Yogi was born. Trixie’s passion didn’t allow to her to rest on her laurels, however. She needed a studio environment unique enough to match the beauty of the new yoga. Although she knew

the high-ceilinged loft-like space she had fallen in love with would need extensive renovation, she could see its potential immediately. “It was absolutely perfect,” she recalls. And the transformation began. Today, The Flying Yogi studio looks nothing like the series of offices the building once housed. Trixie’s intent was to provide the feeling of a sanctuary from the moment visitors enter the space – and she has certainly accomplished that. Beautiful antique wooden doors frame cork floors that have been laid throughout, so the only sound from below is the soft padding of feet. Meditative music and soft lighting combine to provide a temple-like quiet. The empty straps, resembling sleeping cranes, hang from the studio’s ceiling between classes, adding to the mystic atmosphere. For classes, email Trixie at www.theflyingyogi.ca, call 647-993-YOGI (9644) or drop by the studio at 007-245 Carlaw Ave., between Queen and Dundas.

‘Do Anywhere’ Spring Training Workouts Spring is just around the corner, and as the days get warmer we’ll soon be trading winter coats for summer shorts ... and revealing the effects of winter on our bodies for everyone to see. Whether the colder months have left you with a few extra pounds you’d like to shed before slipping into your bikini or you’re eager to get in shape before baseball season, spring training can help you to regain the muscle you’ve lost over the winter, give you that hourglass shape you’ve always wanted or just get you to a healthy place where you can enjoy all the outdoor fun that comes with summer in the neighbourhood. “The good news,” says Andrew Balodis of TILT Fitness, “is you don’t have to go to a gym to improve your physical fitness. All you need is a little bit of time and space and your own body’s natural resistance.” Movement is the key to shaping up, says Andrew, a certified personal trainer, and while weights, treadmills and elliptical machines are handy, “your body provides you with all the equipment you need to move.” People in different age groups move differently – and for different reasons. And because people at different stages of life embrace different lifestyles, their fitness goals also tend to be different. Depending on your current activity/fitness level and your overall fitness goals, Andrew has created three ‘anywhere’ spring workouts of varying intensity that you can do on your own or with a friend or training partner. Riverside BIA Riverside – Toronto’s authentic urban neighbourhood – is a thriving community that flows seamlessly between two bridges, just a stone’s throw from the downtown city core. Fed by the Queen streetcar line, the Riverside District has evolved from a local city centre to a destination for urbanites who love balanced, connected and engaging businesses. With its fresh, new vibe built on an historical undercurrent, Riverside District offers a wealth of business diversity. The emerging loft communities on Broadview Avenue and the arrival of trendy home design and fashion boutiques and cafes on Queen Street have made the Riverside District an exciting shopping and business destination. Exclusive home decor shops, alluring art galleries and charming dining options for all palates are just some of the amenities that make the neighbourhood a wonderful place to live and visit. The award-winning Riverside BIA – one of Toronto’s oldest Business Improvement Area organizations – was established in 1980 and has grown steadily over the last three decades. Today, the Riverside BIA represents more than 100 businesses from the Don Valley Bridge to Empire Avenue, and offers a wide range of

business services and special events for its members, Riverside residents and visitors to the community. On Saturday, June 2, the Riverside BIA will host its fourth annual Sounds like the Riverside Event, held in conjunction with the Riverdale Art Walk. This summer festival is a celebration of Riverside’s creative side, and everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the music, art, shops, eateries, pubs, galleries and popular venues in Toronto’s historic east end. Follow the Riverside BIA and stay connected to the neighbourhood on Facebook (www.facebook.com/RiversideDistrict), Twitter (twitter.com/#!/RiversideBIA) and the BIA blog (riversidebia. blogspot.com). Singing to save a mountain Equalling the height of the CN Tower’s observation deck, Mount Nemo should be as well known as Toronto’s tallest landmark. But it’s not. (top left) Ron Sexmith; (top right) David Donnelly; (bottom from left) Sarah Harmer, Matthew Stone and Andrew Bridgman lend their voices to the fight for Mount Nemo.

Popular with GTA-area rock climbers, Mount Nemo’s stout, primarily limestone face seems invincible. But it’s not. The cliff edge and face of the sprawling Niagara Escarpment is likely the oldest, most intact and undisturbed forest ecosystem in North America. Some cedars on Mount Nemo and the Escarpment may be more than 1,000 years old. But although Mount Nemo is part of a conservation area and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it’s also under attack by an 82-hectare limestone quarry proposal that would decimate the natural habitat for nationally endangered species. Protecting Escarpment Rural Land, or PERL, is a group founded to protect and enhance the Escarpment and rural land in the Region of Halton, primarily through preserving vital ecosystems and natural

habitats. For the past three years, PERL and Environmental Defence have opposed the proposed 23-million tonne Nelson Aggregate Inc. quarry at the heart of the Mount Nemo plateau. With those issues top of mind, on February 23, Environmental Defence and Matthew Stone Presents organized a fundraiser for Mount Nemo. Hosted by PERL, Carlaw Media Group, and Donnelly Law – with performances by Sarah Harmer, Ron Sexmith and local talent Jennifer Courvoisier (www.jennifercourvoisier.com) – more than 100 people attended the Leslieville event. The money raised will help to cover the costs associated with the fight to save Mount Nemo and, in the spirit of conservation, the entertainers all donated their time. The refreshments were donated, too. A delightful selection of oysters and salty

yarns were provided gratis by Sarah’s friend, Rodney Clark of Rodney’s Oyster House. Hors d’oeuvres were created by Chef Rod Dannewald from The Commissary, Leslieville’s newest bistro bar. Donnelly Law, based in Leslieville, is one of the country’s leading environmental firms. David Donnelly advocates smart growth and development near environmentally sensitive areas, and has represented public interest groups and ratepayers in some of Ontario’s major environmental battles, including those related to the Oak Ridges Moraine, Big Bay Point, Walkerton, and the 1.8 million acre Greenbelt Plan for Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe. The evening of entertainment was held at Carlaw Media Group, an emerging fullservice media house that caters to live events, film, music and literary productions. Located at 290 Carlaw Ave, the open loft space and welcoming atmosphere provided the perfect backdrop for the musical performances, distinguished speakers and artwork on display. People came, they saw, they listened. And now they are spreading the word. The Mount Nemo fundraiser has already generated $15,000 for the fight to save this precious natural resource, and donations continue to pour in.
