RODILL A PROSTHESIS LEG

CHALLENGE
MAHAVIR KMINA
For under 30 US dollars, create a prosthetic leg using only the technology and resources native to Medellin, Colombia. Work close with a local prosthetic center and solve problems that amputees face in Colombia’s rough terrain.
When a child loses a limb, they lose a part of their childhood that they can never get back.
FIELD RESEARCH Nick Sgarlato S. Olympic running coach
“When going up or down hills I need to know that my leg will extend before I step.”
American amputees have very expensive prosthetics that are mainly used on flat ground. Most cost more than $25,000 US dollars.
EARLY IDEATION
EARLY IDEATION Early on I was exploring a single bar enclosed knee concept.
MECHANISM HUNT We started the project with this mechanism study. We found random objects to get inspired by their engineering. We successfully found inspiration and a new way of designing the knee.
EARLY PROTOT YPE From found mechanisms rigged up this crude prototype to gain inspiration for a spring forward knee.
DETAIL SKETCHES Even though this was a more build not sketch project, we still used sketching to work through manufacturing methods and mechanism details.
Bilateral Lower Limb Loss Hip Dis-articulation Hemipelvectomy Above Knee (incl. knee dis-articulation) Partial Foot or Toe(s) (incl. Symes)

PROJECT TIME LINE We failed early and often. In order to get to a solution, we had to find as many errors in our designs. We learned from every fail that we had.

“Ask not what you you can do for your grass, ask what your grass can do for you.”
RAW DATA Data was collected from 100 home interviews. From these findings thresholds were found that presented opportunities that can address and solve real problems.
Gray water collection was found at several households.
2013 normal water levels
PROBLEM In order to look further into the California water problem we conducted field research to find out first hand just how bad the drought has changed the environment.
53%
of household water usage goes to watering landscape.
2015 I am standing here
INITIAL IDEATION Many ideas are explored, with attention to the found thresholds from the interviews.
Small model home was made to ideate in 3d early on in the process.
FINAL DIRECTION The idea of synthetic grass that collects water from the moisture in the air. 53% of household water usage goes to watering landscape.
BIOMIMMICRY The Geoyote native to East Africa, also known as “Curly Wurly” is known for being able to create its own source of water. Its spiral blades create pockets of water vapor even in the most dry environment. I mimic its design and implement it into blades for my tile system.
MITďšşMULTIPLE MATERIAL 3D PRINTER With new additive manufacturing techniques arising. One can print multiple materials in one part. I will utilize this technology in order to achieve a hydrophobic material that is cooler on the inside (aluminum) and warmer on the outside silicone.
MOC K U PS
Using a material called warbala I was able to make leaf-like structures and test its water flow and evaluate its surface area.
HOW IT WORKS Single Blade Flexible turf
Made from water repelling hydrophobic materials. Aluminum infused blade interior and silicon exterior keeps the inside cooler than the outside producing dew in 10 months of the year.
Single Tile
Modular tiles can connect to each other. snaps together to fit any size yard.
Tile Grid
Grid is installed on a pitch of minium 2 degrees in order to use gravity to drain the water efficiently.
Booster Pump Keeps water circulating and temperatures cool.
Water flows into IBC Tote, a 275 gallon tank that stores the water
Gray Water Uses
With collected gray water the user can; Water the live landscape, wash automobiles, and pipe to home’s pluming system to flush toilets.
HOW MUCH WATER? 66 Liters a day (10x10 tile system)
* how much water can it collect? An estimation was conducted by a environmental scientist and a mathematician, by using the surface area of each blade and the average moisture in the air (California’s average.) .66 liters a tile means a 10x10 tile system can collect 66 liters a night. 10 months out of the year in certain regions. This number does not include rain fall, and is an estimation.
.66L per tile

YOKE BAG
Adult backpack
INSPIR ATION One of the first traveling storage devices, was a stick with the load balancing on the two ends, called a yoke. I was inspired by the aesthetic and story of the Yoke that i wanted to incorporate different materials into my backpack design.
IDEATION Sketching was used to quickly get some ideas out on the table. The sketching was used to help me figure out the pattern and construction.
MOC Kďšş U PS In order to get the ergonomics and sizing correct I made many mock-ups out of paper. This is the final size.
FEATURES The Yoke pack has a wooden handle that splits in the middle to open the storage area. The wooden handles seconds as a lock and swings down into unique latching mechanism. The yoke also has a light built into one of the shoulder straps that can adjust to different positions.

DETAILS The yoke is expandable. Just un-clip the sides and the wooden structures open up to carry bigger loads. Wooden sides keeps yoke looking upright in stance.

Handling is utilizing the RevoKnuckle design to address the torque steering issue (a typical problem common in high output FWD platforms, caused by physical limitations). The Focus RS uses the same 2.3L EcoBoost engine found in the 2015 Mustang EcoBoost (different tuning.) 315 hp. The Focus RS AWD is still a front-biased system, rear wheels only get large amount of power when necessary. $35,730
Clutch type coupling system will generate lots of heat and wear under heavy load/ long time operation, Golf R’s rear wheels will receive meaningful power ONLY when the Haldex ECU thinks it is necessary. VW’s latest EA888 engine, with 296hp and 280 lb-ft of torque across a broad range from 1,800 to 5,500 rpm. The AWD on the Golf R is using the 5-generation Haldex system, which uses an electro-hydraulic clutch to send power to the rear wheels. $35,650
Subaru
Honda R VS
It has a true planetary-gear center differential (rear-biased) with electronic multidisc clutch to act as slip control.
The front suspension utilizes Honda’s dual axis strut configuration which according to the company reduces torque steer by 55%. The rear suspension uses a torsion beam.
It is still using the aging EJ257 2.5L turbo 4-cylinder, which has been around since 2004.
With a turbocharger and the outcome is 306hp (310PS) at 6500rpm and 295 lb ft of torque (400Nm) at 2500rpm.
It uses a helical-type limited slip front differential, and even employs a Torsen differential for the rear wheels. Therefore, the WRX STI can be considered to having the best possible AWD system.
Helical limited slip differential is tasked to split the power between the front wheels while the six-speed manual transmission -the only option- has a very short 40mm stroke.

FINDING: The VW is out ranked in HP and performance. I strive to enhance the aerodynamics increasing fuel economy. While pulling ahead of the competition aesthetically.

UNDERSTANDING PROBLEM
In the United states we ship most of our e-waste to countries like china and India.
PROBLEM: ELECTRONIC WASTE IS PILING UP AT A RATE OF 40 MILLION TONS PER YEAR.
Asha Bindu Age: 5 Place: India She suffers from chronic migraines and slower mental development because of the high lead levels in her blood, also known as high (BLL’s- blood lead levels). This is due to the large amounts of E-Waste in her village.
PRODUCT BREAKDOWN For this redesign Project I chose a product that most Americans buys at least once in their lifetimes.
32 Parts 21.983 total impact points The calculator was disassembled and each part of the product including packaging was weighed. The material was identified. I then looked into where these materials came from, and calculate how much effort it took to get to the factory where the calculator was manufactured. Then I calculated how many impact points the product has.
