B ev B u tkow Bev Butkow has recently shown on various group exhibitions and collaborative ventures. These include the Turbine Art Fair (2013), opening a studio space at Assemblage in Newtown, and has been involved in events and exhibitions at the Bag Factory. All this is new for her, as in her prior life, Butkow was an accountant. Making the switch to being an artist is diverse, as one would imagine. The works for this exhibition are portraits of ten woman who Butkow deems astute. They too switched careers mid stride. Interestingly all from more societally conservative to more creative and expansive ways of being. This re-iterates Butkows own experience making the works effectively, into a self portrait.

Cath y si m o n Cathy Simon’s work is surface orientated and pursues depth at once. Using ephemeral, waiflike silk thread and hardware materials, she bangs the concept together to create works that are seductive yet give over nothing of their concepts easily. Meditating on the sentence ‘Apparently There Is Nothing That Cannot Happen Today’, she examines one’s present reality and a larger perspective. She looks at the human imprint both literally and figuratively. How one’s print is invested through generations looking back, if one can find the right mindset and perspective one can be decisive in one’s print going forward.

Gen ov e va F e rnand e z Genoveva Fernandez’s tobacco works are potentially controversial. Most of the tobacco she collects for these works are from her teenage daughter’s cigarettes. Although the works are aesthetic and pleasing, the subject matter has enormous points to consider. The mother-daughter relationship and the line of independence that being a smoker demands. Is it okay to ‘celebrate’ a hazardous medium by making lovely and even heart-warming artworks from it. Fernandez is Spanish but presently resides in South Africa where the issue of smoking is far less tolerant than many Spaniards attitudes to it. Her work is an interesting reference in cross cultural opinions on what we (in SA) assume is an agreed upon no-no. Fernandez has never smoked.

H a dassah M e ye rs Hadassah Myers lectures in interactive media at UJ whilst doing her masters at Wits University in Digital Art. Grappling with time, our relationship to digital and analogue and how this can be stretched and orientated. Myers moves through time looking at what has and has not been investigated and why. She is also interested in icons or symbols of our South African culture and her work often crosses the divide of what is clichĂŠ and what is specific. Underpinning all of these works is an interest in interactive art and our interaction with technology.

Leann e shak e no vsky Leanne Shakenovsky began her art career by working at Strauss and Co Auction House for two years. The influence of this can be seen in her work from two angles. Firstly she likes to investigate and reinterpret old South African masters in glitter. The specific works she chooses are famous and master pieces in their own right, and sell for prices that glitter. Her commentary on the price of works and who’s who in the market related artworld are seen most directly in graphs that measure and explain to the viewer a more hardened reality of art. This commentary is balanced by her obvious enjoyment in working in the seductive shiny medium.
