Language focus Learn about abstract art by Kadinsky. Russian-born painter, he became one of the founders of 20th-century abstract art, ultimately moving toward the geometric forms for which he is best known. Learn how Kadinsky was a talented painter and musician. Use the computer to find information. Appreciate the combination of lines, squares and colour. Learn how to make abstract figures using mathematical symbols Create a mural, work in groups, appreciate collaborative work. Listen and understand messages in a variety of verbal interactions. Speak and interact in an oral way, through English language Ask and answer questions. Use practical work to enhance theory

Procedure
Assessment criteria
Look at a selection of abstract painters on the web.Go to Kadinsky. Ask what elements make up the pictures. Talk about colour, tone, symbols used in the paintings. Pupils explore concepts of colour and how it relates to emotion. Examples: What emotion do you associate with red? (anger, embarrassment etc.) What emotions do you associate with blue? (sadness, loneliness, calm) What emotions do you associate with yellow? (happiness, contentment, warmth) etc. Divide the class into groups and explain to the pupils we are going to create a mural of pictures and information on Kadinsky. We are going to divide up the information and work together to make a class presentation. Explain that this topic will also be worked on in the Music class and with the tutor in Maths and Geography. Each group has to: o search the web for specific information (place of birth, family, studies...) o choose a picture o extract the mathematical symbols o copy the main idea o create a mural using different materials. o create a mini dialogue pointing out different features of the mural. ( one pupil can ask questions and the other answers) When all the infomation is gathered we can do a class presentation and each group comes to the front of the class to show what they have done. Each pupil will be expected to say at least 3 sentences or participate in the dialogue. Others can do a musical piece. Ask the music teacher to participate in the project and get the pupils to create something. Ask the tutor to do a map on Russia and explain mathematical symbols used in the pictures.
Direct observation on work done: o Taking part in oral interactions. o Understanding and producing oral information related to the science experiment o Attention to detail and interest in the project. o Ability to share with others. o Using basic strategies for learning to learn. o Using English as a tool for communication. o Level of understanding o Positive attitude and effort o Participating in class activities. (Check the amount of extra help needed from the teacher or other class members to complete the craft task.)
