PART 1

WHAT I`VE LEARNED

From place to space: to turn a place into a space. To see spaces like architects do. In part 1 of our course , we explored the state of nothingness and start moving towards the idea of “place”. In part 2, we deal with the concept of “place” and our conceptual journey goes on towards “space”. We will explore the ways in which place becomes space. We will learn to measure and project ideas into a 3 dimensional way. Week 1: the history of place/ the history of space Week 2: proportions Week 3: taking measurements Week 4: conceptual models Week 5: paper cut models Week 6:building digital space

Pablo Picasso once said: When there’s anything to

steal, I steal. To underline his point, he also added: Good artists copy, great artists steal.

WEEK 1

#the history of place/the history of space

#W #WeallShineOn Stonehenge was built as a monument to unify the peoples of Britain, researchers have concluded after 10 years of archaeological investigations. Dismissing all previous theories, scientists working on the Stonehenge Riverside Project (SRP) believe the enigmatic stone circle was built as a grand act of union after a long period of conflict between east and west Britain. I selected the video of Obama because he shows here his interest in history and culture. And maybe feels the energy of union, of peace? I choose to put the image of a Muslim woman on the stone remembering day 9/11, part of our history . Still nobody knows why or who caused the accident. There are a lot of theories.

#NoCowOnTheIce

What we observe as material bodies and forces are nothing but shapes and variations in the structure of space.” Erwin Schrodinger

#YouGetUp

“All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full.” King Solomon

WEEK 2

#proportions

Proportions, symmetry, harmony and balance

#ThePrimaryFactor

"There is no such thing as an empty space or an empty time. There is always something to see, something to hear. In fact, try as we may to make a silence, we cannot. John Cage

#TheSimplestWay

#TheEggHas

The egg has a perfect shape, even if it’s laid from the ass. Bruno Munari

#ItIsNotHow

In general we may conclude that “place” is the point of departure as well as the goal of our structural investigation; at the outset place is presented as a given, spontaneously experienced totality; at the end it appears as a structural world, illuminated by the analysis of space and character. Norberg-Schulz

#ThereIsNoExcellent

What is “space? Space is matter. Matter does not exist with certainty at definite places. (Fritjof Capra) In fact, you can have places with matter, and places without matter.

#OurLifeIs

#NotAllThose

#IllPaintYou

Galileo Galilei : “measure what is measurable, and make measurable what is not so.”

WEEK 4

#conceptual models

Why do we do this? Lao Tzu said: For the wise man looks into space and he knows there are no limited dimensions. This is where we are at today

“A creature that hides and “withdraws into its shell,” is preparing a “way out.” This is true of the entire scale of metaphors, from the resurrection of a man in his grave, to the sudden outburst of one who has long been silent. If we remain at the heart of the image under consideration, we have the impression that, by staying in the motionlessness of its shell, the creature is preparing temporal explosions, not to say whirlwinds, of being.” Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space

#YabbaDabba

Woody Allen: I have an intense desire to return to the womb. Anybody’s

#WhoWouldBelieve

When things are really dismal, you can laugh, or you can cave in completely. Margaret Atwood

WEEK 5

#paper cut models

#ThroughSpace

What will I learn? Let’s start from Nicolas Malebranche who says that: “Space is the place of bodies”.

#BeforeIMake

#AllTheRivers

#What`sThatScreaming

#IfItHadBeen Nothing is built on stone; all is built on sand, but we must build as if the sand were stone. Jorge Luis Borges

WEEK 6

#building (digital) space

#MarbleIsNot

#IwouldRather

#TheEgoIs

#ToGatherHoney

I think that the ideal space must contain elements of magic, serenity, sorcery and mystery. Luis Barragan

Why do we do this? To synthesize. Design is made out of two moments. The time to go broad (analysis) and the time to go deep (synthesis). We spent almost four months experimenting, trying, seeing what other people do. . Now make your space. Once again: be simple. Less is more! Rilke wrote: ‘These trees are magnificent, but even more magnificent is the sublime and moving space between them, as though with their growth it too increased.” “Therefore, the places in which we have experienced daydreaming reconstitute themselves in a new daydream, and it is because our memories of former dwelling-places are relived as daydreams that these dwelling-places of the past remain in us for all time.”

PART

2 WHAT I`VE LEARNED FROM OTHERS

Because we are flooded with information In the contemporary world, the point is not about getting information. The point is about not drowning into information.

Space and light and order. Those are the things that men need just as much as they need bread or a place to sleep. Le Corbusier

*a selection of work of some of my classmates

In nature we never see anything isolated, but everything in connection with something else which is before it, beside it, under it and over it. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

An idea that is not dangerous is unworthy of being called an idea at all. Oscar Wilde An idea, like a ghost, must be spoken to a little before it will explain itself. Charles Dickens The value of an idea lies in the using of it. Thomas A. Edison

The greatest victory is that which requires no battle. Sun Tzu

PART 3

my mental space

thinking’s about the course

I bought during this course a smart phone. It was my first one and first time to play with games which I didn`t like very much. Knowing the apps took and takes a lot of patience but with nice experiments; it’s an interesting challenge and I am still learning.

Architecture1o1 is about things and nothingness and it’s not about things and nothingness. We build and rebuild, we construct and deconstruct; places and spaces and nothingness. We live in a material world, in Madonna`s society. We hear and feel about a first, second, third and fourth dimension. It’s a great mix of information. The seed is planted and got a lot of attention. The journey started and goes on, I am so happy with this richness

This song below from Vinicius de Moraes symbolizes my journey with architecture1o1:

#Instituto Rogério Steinberg “Era uma casa muito engraçada não tinha teto não tinha nada ninguém podia entrar nela, não porque na casa não tinha chão ninguém podia dormir na rede porque na casa não tinha parede ninguém podia fazer pipi porque penico não tinha ali mas era feita com muito esmero na Rua dos Bobos número Zero” “ It was a very funny house there was no roof, there was nothing nobody could get into it, no Because in the house there was no floor nobody could sleep in the hammock Because the house had no walls nobody could pee because there was no potty there. But it was made with a lot of care on the Street of Fools, number zero”

“YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE CHOICE, TO TAKE THE CHANCE, IF YOU WANT ANYTHING TO CHANGE” antoinespeaks blogspot
