~[f@[flJi) ruID速 ~ My Brothers,
The seven Liberal Arts are pivotal to the Fraternity. They are grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy. Rhetoric is the art of persuasion, informing and motivation through the use of discourse. In our fraternity we make prudent and judicious use of one particular rhetorical device for informing and teaching. That device is allegory.
Looking back on this year it seems we have
done so much! :
Degrees, Movie Nights, Fellowship,
Fundraisers and more were done with
Brotherly Love and Affection. Many Brothers
have stepped up to the plate and others have
fallen back. It makes me think of why all of us
have come to cross paths in Masonry.
Allegory is the use of symbolism to inculcate concepts and ideas. Allegory demonstrates vast power in communicating thoughts and ideas that may be complex but are more easily understood by the use of inherently perceived symbols. Simply put allegory teaches one thing through the use of another. For instance the fraternity teaches wisdom, strength and beauty through the allegory of columns. The Corinthian column is beautiful to behold, the Doric column is the essence of strength and the Ionic illustrates wisdom.
Nellis Lodge #46 is rare in its high level of
activity and opportunities to be involved; as
well as the diversity of its members. I came
upon this and thought that it was fitting.
"DO YOU JUST BELONG"
Are you a Brother that would be missed,
or are you content that your name is on the
list.
One of the advantages of allegory, if done thoroughly, is its potential to continue to provide deeper and/or multiple meanings as the person studying becomes better acquainted with its ideas.
Do you make meetings and mingle with the
flock
or do you stay home and criticize the knock.
I find myself continually awed by our fraternity not just by the sheer volume of symbols we use but the ever deeper meanings they possess and teach as I apply my mind in the pursuit of the lessons they espouse. Each time a lecture is given during the degrees is an opportunity for each Brother to further their understanding of the allegories as our Ancient Brethren have done who have gone this way before us.
Do you help work go along
or are you satisfied that you just belong.
Do you visit a brother who is sick
or leave it for a few and talk about it in the
clique.
Brothers, you know right from wrong,
are you an active member or do you just
belong?
Fraternally Always,
/
By the Strength of the Level,
Brother Miguel Zavala WM

By the Plumb My brothers It is time for me to appreciate my Nellis brothers. For me, this year has been an extremely enjoyable time. We have brothers like Bill Robinson and Miguel Zavala who donated large sums for things like the Ice cream and beer float social. We had Daniel in the kitchen, Jim, Keith, Doug, Jason, Joe and the other Hirams doing whatever needed to be done to keep us up and running. If there was a soft spot in the line, the past masters were always ready to stand. We thought the building was a sound one, but it has been Terry who always kept the rain off of our heads. Oh, and how do we thank Jim keeping the records? New brothers have always been treated with respect and were always given proper instruction, via a very long list of phone numbers kept by Jerry. Nellis brothers are also always ready to give or provide what we can for charity. We can all be proud of our lodge and our brothers for their actions this year. Holiday time is upon us again. The holidays provide a vehicle for friends and relatives to get tOGether and celebrate life. Today, though, our lives have become so hectic and stressful that we spend way too little time with the people we love. This can eVE;ln cause health issues, both emotional and physical. We need our family to stay healthy and happy. It is righteous that we use the holidays that we are given to spend time with our loved ones. For those brothers without a large immediate family, you have your Nellis brothers. Amen! Amen! so mote it be! So say we all for charity.*
