EDITORS LETTER here’s nothing like your first love. It’s just as they say, you never really recover from it, no matter how good or how torturous, it is, and there have been many torturous days at the studio, when I think, we thought this day might never come.
“Welcome to OUR labor of love”
Days when I’m sure, that at times Aidy, my long-suffering designer of AM Digital Media, the incredibly talented photographer that is Eric Murphy and the ‘cool in a crisis’ owner of Boho models, the lovely Alisia would gladly have got together and buried me in a shallow grave. So where has the love come from? Mine, at first glance, might seem an unexpected choice, especially around here. It has come from arriving by train, to Newcastle across the Tyne and seeing what has been achieved there, a far cry from the wasteland that was, when I left here in the eighties, or the view of Durham cathedral and castle from the station, Or Sunderland with the Winter gardens and surprisingly beautiful park, the city that is home of many of my dearest friends. And NE Love? It is, a hybrid of colliding worlds and images: that proudly point out, music culture; art and fashion; from all over the North East, It is a magazine born of, and in a time where technology has never made it easier and more exciting to tell a story l

The five-day Fashion In Durham event will run at venues across the city with a string of High Street names and independent designers signed up to take part. As well as catwalk shows and lunch events, organisers promise a range of fashion-fuelled activities in and around the city starting on October 16. Local designers will have the opportunity to showcase their work at the Saturday night show on October 19, being held at an as yet secret location. Fashion In Durham has been organised by Durham Business Improvement District, which represents more than 400 city centre businesses and was set up to improve the economy by attracting more people to the city centre. Sonali Craddock, manager of Durham Bid, said: “We are looking for local designers to get involved with what is set to be a great new event for Durham.
DESIGNERS from across the region are being invited to showcase their talent at a city’s first fashion week.
“We have a great mix of high street and boutique retailers in Durham and this event will help to promote Durham as a premium destination in the north east.” l

Imagine an enchanted garden, with a “lost property tree” full of things that look like they could have blown in on the wind.
You can’t can you? I guess that’s because you really can’t imagine No. 28 unless you have actually been there, and believe me I have been there; I have been there for crazy parties, live music, great DJ’s and calming quiet Sunday lunches. No.28 is one of a growing number of imaginative spaces that have benefited from the Midas touch of Paul Skevington. It’s the attention to detail that makes No 28 what it is, weird and wonderful décor, great cocktails, music styles so eclectic that I cant even begin to explain them all, and you can add to all that, that some of the staff are as hot as the food! You might have guessed by now that this is one of my favorite haunts, there aren’t many places in town where I would happily rock up alone after a long day at the office. So on Thursday night I stepped out of a miserable, freezing, rainy evening in to that No.28 glow, the one that always gets me thinking that maybe winter isn’t all that bad after all! Clearly I wasn’t the only one with that thought in mind, most of the tables were taken, it seems that the after work crowd pop in for dinner. So I’m relaxed for the first time in a week, I have a large glass of Merlot in hand and a great table and now wondering what to eat, I ask, and I am told that if I’m a fish lover I should go for the red snapper, so I skipped the starters and went straight for the fish.
food to warm you on a nasty autumn evening. It seems that 28 can’t put a foot wrong. The new menu also contains such delights as red Thai Curry, Lamb Shank and a very tempting Korean beef salad to name just a few. Thursday night is also Oxjam an Oxfam charity open mike night of live music, I stayed long enough to hear a young guitarist doing a great job of singing “Rolling in the deep” followed by “Delicate” which is exactly how I have felt after some of our wilder nights there. Not tonight though, I headed for home feeling relaxed entertained and very, very well fed. It’s an absolute must if you’re in the city centre. 28 I think it’s my new lucky number l No.28 27-29, NELSON STREET NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE Just opposite Savannah Hair Salon www.no28.co.uk

Oh I do like to be beside the Quayside! Spying on Newcastle with a view of the Quayside to die for, you will find South Bank Grill , Ok the view from the Newcastle side is good, but the view from here is magnificent. Add to this the company of one of my favorite partners in crime and have the makings of a great evening.. As soon as we arrived we chose to sit downstairs inside in the cozy dining room overlooking the river, such a shame it wasn’t just a couple of weeks earlier so that we could have taken advantage of the outside terrace. So far, warm welcome, great table, nevertheless we are here for the food right? Let me tell you; someone in this kitchen knows exactly what they are doing, this is a menu full of American classics, hot wings, great burgers and steaks, corn on the cob, and as you would expect a few Mexican flavors and sauces from all over the world. Lets order!! For me a César salad with bacon and chicken, delightfully crunchy croutons and a tangy creamy dressing, my verdict? ten out of ten, Michael’s “The best salad I have ever eaten” and “ I would never have ordered a salad BUT this is different I would order this” praise indeed. Michael’s hot wings were tender, and a beautiful golden spicy enough to earn some respect but not so hot they made you cry.

Mains! for me it had to be their specialty burger, to satisfy my deepest red meat cravings, perfect moist flavorsome beef burger piled high with salad, onion and gherkins, so tall in fact that it arrived skewered to keep the whole skyscraper of a burger together, resulting in very messy but incredibly satisfying meal, I do not recommend that you order this on a first date. And the fries? Oh. The fries I would go back again just for those golden, crunchy on the outside double fried potato delights. Michael had gone for the American sirloin with blue cheese, medium rare. How rare, in fact to get the meat exactly as you would expect it, it was pink, perfectly presented with no blood on the plate. I would love to personally tell you how good it was, but alas it was polished off before I could steal a single bite. I’m usually a food sharer, but there are some things, so good, even I wouldn’t share so luckily for him he had his own bucket of fries and no sword fencing with steak knives was necessary. South Bank Grill warm, friendly, stylish with good honest American food, what’s not to like ?? Drop in and take along your appetite someone in that kitchen really knows what they’re doing!!! l Pipewellgate House, Pipewellgate Gateshead,NE8 2BJ,0191 477 6455 www.south-bank-grill.co.uk

NUD sushi, scrumptiously fit food It seems that more and more restaurants are opening up in city centre, which is great to see because not only is Newcastle’s food scene growing but also it has become a burgeoning foodie’s enclave with an ever-increasing array of cuisines to try.
to us by one of the staff that obviously knows her stuff, and had listened to my friends misgiving about raw fish, the salmon has in fact been lightly seared over the rice to seal in the flavor and moisture; and it works!
Although we’ve always been fans of sushi restaurants we had not tried Nudo Sushi Box, sister to the highly acclaimed Nudo Noodle House on Low Friars where they serve delicious authentic comfort food from the Orient.
The vegie dumping’s been fabulous and the sweet and sour sauce accompaniment was plummy and rich.
Nudo on Northumberland Street is bright and airy and has an astounding selection of beautifully prepared and painstakingly packaged fresh food, and while primarily a take out you can still eat in. I do not use the word, fresh lightly; sushi boxes are best enjoyed on the same day of purchase whilst fresh, however they do have a good shelf life date of 2 days from when freshly made. It was fairly quiet that Tuesday evening in terms of people eating in, but the take a had a fast turnover of people of all ages and nationalities popping in to pick up fresh sushi on there home from shopping or work! On this occasion we decided to pay the sushi box a visit and try it out, eating in! We were able to take our time checking out the different dishes and admittedly took advice from the staff on what we should and shouldn’t try, since my partner in crime on this occasion is not particularly a fish fan. After a good ten minutes browsing the food we had chosen: seared salmon, veggie dumplings, sweet potato salad, and all this followed by a party box. While that sounds and in fact looks don’t forget this is sushi, scrumptiously fit food. The seared salmon had been recommended
The potato salad by definition was a little misleading, as it also contains butternut squash and peppers red onions mayo and soy, but the whole thing hangs together perfectly and is refreshingly crunchy. A sushi night isn’t complete without a bit of traditional sashimi. When the party box arrived we were very impressed with the presentation of the platter. A combination of around 20 pieces of chef’s choice sashimi beautifully presented with lovely accents, it was almost too pretty to eat. The platter is a great option when you’re not sure what types you’d prefer. That night we had everything from red tuna to chicken. It was a delight seeing what was included in the selection. Last but not least the desserts, fresh fruit salads granolas and delicious vanilla yogurts. As if all of this wasn’t good enough news, the brand new Nudo, Jesmond has just opened its doors and will soon be followed by Sunderland then London l

Talk to a so called “foodie” and it’s quite likely that they’ll blab on about the luxury meals they’ve devoured. Does the humble pizza ever get mentioned? No, if anything the humble Italian dish is a victim of its own social popularity. Supermarkets, takeaways and fast food chains supposedly all offer authentic pizzas. But when you’re presented with more dough than topping and faced with ingredients including kebab, it suddenly makes you realise that in England, we aren’t crafting authentic pizza. These were my thoughts until a visit too Cal’s Own on Chillingham Road restored my faith. The restaurant is gaining a glowing reputation, but there still isn’t a trace of an ego where owner Cal is concerned. If anything, the minimal design and size of the dining room gives the place a homely feel, making you immediately welcome. Staff happily engage in conversation and aren’t scared to crack a smile or two, or chat about unrelated pizza pie maters. You may expect the owner, Cal to spend his time focussing on events in the kitchen and working continuously on his beautiful creations. Appreciative of the people who visit his restaurant, he can often be seen chatting to diners and even offered his advice on which pizza pies should be chosen. Always happy to listen to an expert, it was decided that we should try one pie from the main menu and one from the specials. The Vera pizza, bursting with bufala campana, rich sauce, cheese, sea salt, basil and extra virgin olive oil., it exploded with flavour as soon as the first slice reached my mouth. The dough melted in the mouth and soon made a lifetime of pizza eating seem insignificant. Doused in just the right amount of tomato sauce, there was a perfect blend of flavourings without one overpowering element. As the second slice was polished off, out came the “Scotland Yard” pie from the specials board. A meatier affair, it was topped with Italian sausage and pepperoni with an underlying spicy kick, instantly hitting the spot.
C AL S OWN BROOKLYN STYLE PIZZA PIE RESTAURANT & SLICE HOUSE IN THE HEART OF HEATON As it arrived on the table, it was almost became a race between myself and my fellow diner to see who could sample it first. Once the Vera had been sampled, we were both hooked and desperate for more. Trying to decide which pizza pie was better was an impossible task. Whilst each was a pleasure in itself to eat, they both showcased Cal’s ability to create delicious food that caters for vegetarians and also fans of spice. Forcing the remaining slices down couldn’t be done so a subsequent raid on the dessert menu had to be left for another visit. With all the desserts handmade in the restaurant, freshness and quality are guaranteed. As the restaurant allows operates a BYOB (£1 per person corkage) alongside a selection of American imported sodas a night out is certainly affordable with 14” inches pizzas ranging from £9.50 - £13.50 and selected 18” pizzas for a couple of extra pounds. Newcastle may not have its own little Italy, but with a self taught chef conjuring up these delights, looking at a frozen pizza again will prove to challenging to stomach l

THE DEMON BARBER “Sharpening your own razor is like tying your own bow tie, and I’m a man who ties his own bow tie” An off the cuff, throwaway remark by Lloyd as he finished off my last hair cut, and one that definitely stuck out to me, in a way, because it seems to encapsulate everything about the Demon Barber itself and has allowed it to develop into something of a Newcastle institution. Headed up by husband and wife team Lloyd and Kyla Dobrodumow, The Demon Barber has been dishing out sharp hair cuts, clean shaves and pearls of wisdom from a variety of locations throughout Gateshead and Newcastle for the past five years. Lloyd, who acts as the front man in this operation, brings with him 30 years of experience and his own distinctive view of, not only what a good barber should be, but exactly how to be just that, these two factors have become key, to both their success and loyal customer base. What keeps people coming back is their dedication to providing customers with the exact cut and style they want, never forcing ideas, thereby ensuring you leave the shop happy with their service. Masters at mixing the traditional and the contemporary, they are able to create a timeless look that gives a knowing nod to great British haircuts of the past, tapping into the blend of subcultures that has made us who we are today. Newcastle has found in the Demon Barber a completely unique
experience, where you can get a top quality haircut, drink a beer and hear the world put to rights, in a location as unique and quirky as they are. Previously based in Bensham, Gateshead and later Newcastle’s High Bridge Street, you can now find them at Number 3 Grainger Street, close to the historic Central Station. Where yet again Lloyd and Kyla have managed to create an environment in their own style. The Demon Barber’s nomadic, pop-up barbering service has become almost as popular as their bricks and mortar locations. Appearing at variety of bars and shops throughout Newcastle, they have even taken their services across to this year’s BeatHerder festival, Lloyd has consistently proves that regardless of the time or place, his own take on barbering stays the same, absolute dedication to providing a top quality service. But don’t just take our word for it, next time you are in need of a hair cut and in the mood for a totally unique experience, head to Grainger Street and meet, your new favorite barber l 3 Grainger Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 5DQ 0191 261 1447 THIRTY9 / NEL VE.CO.UK

MR MIYAGI, MY OLD SON.
There is a male grooming revolution going on right under our noses. Throughout the years the popularity of the moustache has varied. Big in the noughties, seventies and even back in the forties. The moustache is making a dramatic comeback. This moustache movement is due to the slick look of 40s fashion coming back into style with a modern twist, not only in hair, but in men’s style in general. And the popularity of Movember, when guys grow moustaches throughout November to raise money for the prostate cancer charity.
So whether you want to emulate Brad Pitt or Jude Law or just growing one for charity, you will need to take care of it.
Just remember, a moustache is not just a fashion statement, but a way of life.

MY NAME IS Michael Caine Michael Caine 1960s By Graham Marsh
Coffee table reading at its very best, this visual book is teaming with suave British style and iconic photography. 128-pages and more than one hundred images capture candid moments out and about, as well as posed publicity shots, Caine is photographed wearing everything from Saville Row suits to Burberry, always accompanied by his typical sixties cigarette cool, and the ever-present horn rimmed glasses. In Michael Caine’s 1960s he is shown to be one of the few iconoclast actors to have fully embraced his fame whilst remaining firmly grounded in
his working class roots, and this, is exactly what makes this book so charming. A book that looks more like a style bible than a book about Michael Caine the movie star. Non Invasive Liposuction??? Really??? It was not without reservation that I went along to the Revamp clinic on the leafy Towers Avenue in sunny Jesmond, but I had decided to try Med Contour, the fat zapping treatment that has been getting rave reviews. This was no beauty salon, but a bona fide clinic, which stupidly (for a moment) made me a little more worried about what I had let myself in for. They were, however so amenable and charming that I soon found myself comfortably chatting about the procedure while filling in my medical questionnaire. I was surprised at this point to be told that it is fiftyfifty men to women that go along for this treatment. Firstly I was asked to remove the clothing from the offending part of my body, in my case, my tummy, but apparently this treatment is effective on just about anywhere. This was soon followed by the dreaded tape measure, to measure my waist, I weigh around eight and a half stones, so have never really carried any weight elsewhere. The treatment started with stimulation of the lymph nodes across either side of my neck and across my
lower tummy, this was a kind of cupping, sucking sensation which, while peculiar, is in no way unpleasant and, I was informed, is done to help the body eliminate the waste fat. Immediately after which, oil was rubbed in to the area and a double beam of low frequency modulated ultrasound was used. This breaks down the fat cells and starts the metabolic process that leads to the body’s natural elimination of the waste. The result is a significant reduction in the fat mass and the fatty layers of cellulite thus giving the treated areas a more toned and smooth look. THAT’S THE SCIENCE, but did it work? After all, I had been lying flat on my back for an hour having what indeed felt like a warm massage, I didn’t want to move. But then, oh no, a rude awakening! The dreaded tape measure was out again! I lost not two, not three but five whole centimeters in one treatment, this really does work. And I still had yet to drink the two liters of water to flush my system. A course of six treatments is recommended but you don’t need to have them all on the same part of your body l

I STAND CORRECTED Switching from Ginger to Marilyn? Leave it to the professionals! Clayton and company hairdressing like many professional salons are experiencing a large number of clients visiting their salon for colour corrections. The increase in this particular area is due to the number of people colouring their hair at home, and the speed at which fashion trends change season by season. As one of Newcastle upon Tyne and the North East of England’s leading colour correction specialists Clayton and company hairdressing team are second to none. Even the “off the supermarket shelf” brands send their disgruntled customers to Clayton and company hairdressing and then pay for the correction! Being a L’oreal Professionel Prestige salon Clayton and co are ranked within L’oreals Top 100 UK INOA colour specialists. “We strive to achieve the best possible result to reflect our clients needs.” says Paul Clayton Salon owner of Clayton and company hairdressing. “Rest assured though we are also not afraid to say NO to a client! Condition of the hair along with end result are what matters to the team and I genuinely care for hair. What is the point of us colouring or attempting to colour anybody’s hair if the end result doesn’t look great? We simply wont do it!”. Any client going through a colour correction or colour change must be prepared to maintain the condition of their hair themselves with professional high quality products otherwise is just false economy and further hinders any chance of changing again in the future. Before Clayton and company hairdressing colour ANY clients hair a skin test must be carried out at least 48 hours an advance. Many unprofessional salons will simply colour without skin testing, this is against the law! Here’s a question for you If the salon you are visiting chooses to “cut corners” and carry out a colouring service without a skin test, what else might they cut corners on? To try and explain what happens when hair is coloured imagine a drinking glass, if you fill a glass with orange juice, to the brim and then decide to add Cherryade there is no room left for the Cherryade and there is very little change to the colour, would it look like Cherry? Would it look like Orange? the answer is simple we can not know. We need to first empty the glass before we can refill it with something completely different.
Sometimes a few attempts at emptying the old colour are necessary. Depending on what has previously been applied to the hair. Its important you tell your hairdresser EVERYTHING about which “Cherryade” has been applied to your hair. Failing to be honest about this could jeopardise the end result and the final condition. Patience is key.....remember the old saying “Only fools rush in!”. It can cost a great deal of money to correct your colour, why waste your hard earned cash? The team will fully explain what you can expect to before they begin any corrective service. With the care and attention Clayton and company hairdressing pay to their clients hair its easy to see why they are the most reviewed salon in the North of England and have previously won awards for their dedication to caring for hair. The sure fire way to avoid having to correct colours that have gone wrong...Is don’t carry them out at home with off the shelf kits. Have them carried out at a professional salon that cuts your hair, not corners! l 1st Floor (Above Superdrug) 52 Northumberland Street Newcastle NE1 7DF 0191 222 1311 www.claytonandcompanyhairdressing.co.uk

Ample, luscious, perfect lips have always had their admirers. Among them was Alfred, Lord Tennyson, the 19th century English poet who wrote what could truly be considered an ode to beautiful lips:
“A man had given all other bliss, And all his worldly worth for this, To waste his whole heart in one kiss Upon her perfect lips” A plump pout is universally synonymous with youth, and an icon of sensuality. I love full, pouty lips. In fact, I feel lips are the most youthful aspect of a face, Today, when it comes to lip augmentation, there have never been more options available to enhance what Mother Nature gave you! It’s more a case of whom you go to in search of that perfect pout. Face in Gateshead was formed by Rachael in 2011, she qualified as a nurse on 2008, and this along with her keen interest in beauty were my two; very good reasons, for choosing her. The others are simple, is she qualified, clean, friendly, punctual? She has four yes’s. I think that the process of lip enhancement is so well documented by now that there is little need to talk anymore about medical questionnaires numbing cream and so on, What Rachael has been
able to achieve is exactly what you should be looking for. She REALLY looks at your face and she REALLY can pick out your problem areas, Because of this, and her incredible eye for the smallest details, the result is simply, less discomfort, minimal bruising immediate natural looking results and reasonable pricing. Another four yes’s! At your home or the salon, put that smile back on your FACE! l
Tat2 or not to? that is the question! It doesn’t take a genius to know that its no longer just Photoshop that is responsible for all the perfectly made up women you see around these days, after all you see them all over from M n S to Tesco, looking for all the world like they have just stepped off a magazine cover . Truth be told there are an array of near magical cosmetics around that do everything from reflect light, (somewhat like a soft focus on a camera) to mascara that actually makes your eyelashes grow! Sadly though, whether you pencil your brows, your lips your eyeliner or wear blusher, you either leave them on a wipe when you turn in for the night, or, tut tut, on your pillow in the morning! So what of semi permanent makeup? Admittedly it is a bit of a leap of faith so you find a real professional like Lou at Tat2 Cosmetics Lou will talk you through a free consultation, make sure you understand what kind of a result you can realistically expect to achieve, and talk you through what the treatment involves. She is in fact the creator of my now perfect brows, and more recently lips, cosmetic tattooing at its finest. Imagine waking up with perfect make-up,
never having to apply eyeliner, lip liner or pencil eyebrows. Step out of the shower, the pool or the gym with your eyebrows, eyeliner and lip colour perfectly in place. Semi-permanent make-up eliminates the chore of having to apply, and remove your make-up every day. Lou will of course help you chose your preferred colour which is implanted into a lower layer of the skin, where it remains for up to five years. There are limitless choices of colour available. In the beginning the colour may appear a little darker than you expect but afterwards it will look natural - your features look more defined, your friends will never know the difference unless you tell them. There is usually minimal discomfort and topical anaesthetics greatly reduce discomfort Some clients feel absolutely nothing except a prickly sensation. Two sittings are often necessary to complete the procedure and healing time will vary between four and seven days - depending on the individual and the procedure that you have had done.
If however you are sporting a tattoo that is less than an “amour parfait” Tat2 cosmetics also help with laser tattoo removal at very competitive prices. The laser technology used by Tat2Ink has two different wavelengths enabling it to remove most colors. Blacks, navy’s and reds are the easiest to remove, while pastels, greens and light blues may take longer. When you attend your free initial consultation you will get a full appraisal of the service they can provide, including the estimated number of treatments necessary. Tat2Ink are committed to removing your tattoos as quickly and cost effectively as possible l

ON YER BIKE Uncover the truth behind the riddles wrapped up inside cycling enigmas…
PHotographY eric murphy
SEX HURTS
LACTIC ACID BRINGS THE PAIN
Plenty of footballers, boxers and even cyclists claim that abstaining from ‘how’s yer father’ before a big event is vital to performing at their peak. ‘No nookie after Wednesday if you’re racing on Saturday’ is their philosophy. Sadly, it looks as if such monkish behaviour is in vain. There’s no scientific evidence to suggest that sex before sport reduces endurance or speed. In fact, if you’re the type who gets restless the night before a cycle race, the sleep-inducing powers of sex may actually help, whether you can persuade your other half to help you out with this is another matter entirely!
Lactic acid has long been the bogeyman of speed and endurance athletes. The commonly held belief is that once you push your body to its limits, lactic acid starts to flood your system causing the pain and ‘jelly-legged’ feeling we all know so well. However, the truth of the matter is quite different. Lactic acid is a partially broken-down carbohydrate molecule containing lots of energy. If we exercise very hard, the body doesn’t have time to break down glucose fully, so it breaks it down as far as lactic acid, which is then used to provide lots more energy.
‘WARM’ IS THE CRUCIAL WORD IN WARM-UP Despite its name, a warm-up has little to do with temperature, heating the leg muscles of riders before cycling has little or no effect on their endurance. Warm-up is all about telling your body it’s going to need to recruit plenty of muscle fibres to work soon.
HARDER IS BETTER Can filling your tyres with enough air to fill a Zeppelin lead to faster riding, do rock-hard tyres really make a difference to your speed? the answer is no, resistance caused by varying tyre pressure is too small to be detected, but If you try to pump your tyres until their pressure is sky-high, you’re going to be in for a rough and uncomfortable ride. You have no suspension to cushion the blows. Feeling every bump in the road through your undercarriage is likely to slow you down and may even cause some damage to your bike.
DEHYDRATION PUTS A DAMPENER ON PERFORMANCE Dehydration’s effect on performance is one of the most prevalent myths in sport, but all is not as it seems. The theory of dehydration limiting performance in the heat is completely bogus, several studies have shown that your performance drop-off in hot conditions is due to the body’s level of heat storage, rather than its lack of fluids. In fact there may exist a tolerable range for dehydration that won’t impact negatively on endurance, but which may even be an advantage by preventing the increases in body mass due to the consumption of large volumes of fluid, the upshot? Don’t get thirsty but even more importantly, keep your cool (see Aspire to Perspire above).
EATING IS CHEATING It seems logical that your body will be in a fasted state if you do your exercise before breakfast and, without food to burn, it’ll set upon the spare tyre round your midriff instead. Not true. Well, at least it’s not true that your spare tyre will diminish any more quickly than if you do your exercise at any other time. It’s pretty straightforward you eat a certain amount of calories per day and exercising burns some of those calories, regardless of when you do it. If you cycle in the morning, you may burn fat, but you’ll add the calories back throughout the rest of the day.”
A LEG THAT’S FREE FROM HAIR MOVES SWIFTLY THROUGH THE AIR Non-cyclists simply don’t understand why many male bikers shave their legs. The most used excuse is the aerodynamic benefit of baldness. Oops! While leg shaving makes your muscles look nicer and road rash easier to clean, no academic study shows any kind of significant advantage in terms of speed. But before you bin the razor, the same is not true if you plan on dabbling in triathlons. Given that water is around 1,000 times denser than air, the resistance hairy legged athletes face when swimming is more of an issue. Several studies have proven that body hair removal can reduce the drag effect significantly. One study even found that swimmers achieved 10 per cent greater distance with each stroke l

A VERY BRITISH MODEL Jaguar has launched a short online film featuring some of its most iconic sports cars - and renowned British model David Gandy.
The film is about his number one passion in life; driving sports cars, which he describes as “the ultimate escapism” from his hectic life as he drives some of the most famous sports cars ever produced. The film also celebrates the latest addition to Jaguar’s iconic sporting bloodline, the new F-TYPE convertible. In the film, Gandy gives us insight into his life as he invites us on a road trip that starts at dusk as he escapes “the craziness of London”. Gandy discusses his passion for driving; “that feeling of freedom, just you and the car” and how driving is his “meditation”. Throughout, he wears the same Persol sunglasses as one of his icons, Steve McQueen, who famously owned a Jaguar XKSS. The film was fittingly first previewed at Goodwood Revival, the world’s most popular historic motor sport celebration. David was there in person to share the film with Revival visitors on the Jaguar stand in the Earl’s Court Motor Show Exhibition. Gandy said: “Jaguar, with its unique, seductive design and high performance engineering is making the world fall in love all over again with
the classic British two-seater sports car. It was such a pleasure to take a journey in some of the most fabulous cars in automotive history through to the new F-TYPE, which more than lives up to its sporting predecessors.” Earlier this year, Gandy was part of the Jaguar Heritage Racing team at the Mille Miglia, a one thousand mile celebration of a vintage car race held in Italy. He partnered with British fashion icon Yasmin Le Bon in a classic Jaguar XK120 at the event which he describes as “one of the greatest adventures of my life”

ART & SOLE
For footwear enthusiasts the silhouette of a shoe is arguably its most important feature, and can definitely be its make or break factor. For footwear enthusiasts the silhouette of a shoe is arguably its most important feature, and can definitely be its make or break factor. For Samuel Yau, a 27 year old illustrator and proud Mancunian, this obsession with the silhouette has become the driving force behind a unique new project. He has created unique posters depicting a range of iconic designs from much loved sportswear companies such as Nike, New Balance, Air Jordan and Adidas, exploring the relationship between footwear and art. We got in touch with Sam to find out what started this project and what draws him to create footwear inspired artwork.
HOW DID THE PROJECT START? “I’ve been drawing, sketching & illustrating for a number of years now for personal projects, friends & families and commission based work. It was a promise I made to a friend who owns 6ACRE, a Manchester based footwear/lifestyle event that kick started these series of prints.
WHICH SHOE DID YOU KICK IT OFF WITH? “The Nike Air Max 1, a classic silhouette with great detailing!
WHAT DRAWS YOU TO A SILHOUETTE? “I am a big fan of simple silhouettes such as a Tennis Classic, Cortez and the Trimm Trabb, I find these more challenging as a design as there is a heavy
focus on the overall shape rather than the detailing of the shoe.
ASIDE FROM FULFILLING OUR PROMISE FOR 6ACRE, WHAT CONTINUES TO DRIVE THE PROJECT FORWARD? “The inspiration behind the collection stems from a passion of working in the footwear industry and art. The nature of my job has provided me an understanding and appreciation of the effort, development and technology that certain brands invest to create that particular shoe
HOW DO YOU WANT IT TO GROW? “In the future I’d like to apply my work to other mediums, I’ve been invited to a screen-printing venue to see how my work will look as a screen print on different surfaces and textures. The technique and procedure is something I’d like to learn and hopefully add an extra string to my bow!
WOULD YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE A SNEAKERHEAD? “I wouldn’t label myself as a sneaker head, I find the term overused and there’s no measure of what classifies you as a sneaker head or not. My philosophy is: if I like the shoe, buy the shoe, rock the shoe! PHOTOGRAPHY & WORDS SAMANTHA ORTON
Lisa, who was born in Hertfordshire in 1965, has lived and worked in the North East for some 20 years. As a painter and a sculptor, she has created a wide range of work and exhibitions. ‘I have been making figurative sculpture for many years. The work has slowly evolved or changed as I have. It is a working through of ideas and realities and a process of discovery. Things change and although initially it is change which may frighten us, it is change that makes life so fascinating.’ ‘The inner animal in all of us we so eagerly hide is just beneath the surface. We are not as far from life in the trees as we like to think, yet we place ourselves on a different level from our cousins there. We suspend empathy for those creatures we so abuse and use and choose to forget we are all far more closely related than we care to think about.’ Lisa’s early works touched upon the exploration of the language of gesture, but her ideas have evolved and Lisa is now fascinated with how humans share their body language with other creatures, yet deny that they have an emotional and intelligent life similar to that of a human being. As well as exhibited sculpture Lisa has created props which have been used in theatres, including the Welsh National Opera, Dodgy Clutch and the Newcastle Theatre Company. In 2012 an exhaustive search for the North East’s favourite Shakespearean character, run by the Theatre Royal in partnership with The Journal, saw the ill-fated Mercutio come in ahead of Hamlet, Romeo, Juliet and all the rest. Artists were then invited to apply for a commission to make a bronze sculpture of Mercutio to have permanent pride of place at the Theatre Royal. The commission was funded by Ramy and Marilyn Zack, owners of the Biscuit Factory commercial art gallery in Newcastle. Lisa, whose studio is located at High Spen, near Rowlands Gill, impressed the judges with her submission and her Mercutio slupture was unveiled in the Theatre Royal grand circle. Lisa is currently running sculpture workshops from her studio, her students range from the ages of 40-65. They are currently working with a male model, their recent work is showcased within Lisa’s studio. The studio has recently been converted from an old church hall into a working creative space l

WORDS & INTERVIEW KARL BELL
BLOOD, SWEAT AND BEERS WITH A SUNDERLAND’S FINEST ROCK QUINTET.
Ok, so for the first edition of NE LOVE’s music pages the aim was to find a band to interview, one that would set the standard for forthcoming issues. We went in search of a band that carried all of the fundamental qualities of a great local outfit. Enigmatic, energetic, passionate, creative, all such traits necessary to hitting the brief in hand. With this in mind I turned to the ever intriguing Sunderland based rockers, Ashes of Iron. A five piece fusion of local talent spawned from each members blood, sweat and tears lost through years spent working their way through the local circuits with bags of optimism, in search of the right blend, finally crossing each others paths forming what we have today. in a barricade of giant grit filled sandbags of sound, made up of fat thunderous riffs. Something of which would have sat perfectly as the sound track to the scene of Godzilla thumping that monstrous moth. But don’t mistake these guys for a haphazard style heavy metal group. Yes, their music is strong, hard hitting and testosterone driven but is also polished and well considered in it’s execution One studio album, hundreds of gigs and a slight change in personnel later (enter Chris, Drums) we have the Ashes of Iron of 2013. Not so fresh from a packed out gig at Newcastle’s long standing Trillians, I had the pleasure of picking the brains of guitarist’s Tom, Richie and frontman Alan on the past, present and future of Ashes of Iron

HOW DID THE BAND ORIGINALLY GET TOGETHER?
“It’s easier to write now we have found a formula we think works”
TOM When we started out in 2008 there weren’t any Heavy Rock bands in Sunderland, that we were aware of. A sprinkling of metal tinged bands and a heap load of indie style bands. Our initial intentions were to have a laugh and enjoy jamming together. We wanted to create music that we liked and to perform it, so we started putting songs together for our own enjoyment and it all just kind of snowballed.
HAS THE WRITING/ CREATIVE PROCESS CHANGED IN ANYWAY IN COMPARISON TO THE PREVIOUS ALBUM?
ALAN I would say it’s changed in two ways. It’s easier to write now we have found a formula we think works. It’s harder because we have the debut to try and better, so we have been more perfectionistic about it. It’s more of a unit now when it comes to writing. It’s a weird process, all of a sudden we’ll have a song we are proud of and not realised
where it came from. Almost forgetting the hours and hours work put into it. That makes it worth all the struggle. RICHI Yeah like how a little idea that has been floating around for a long time suddenly becomes a new song. Though I feel the song writing style changed before the first album was finished. And this feels like we are carrying on from where the last album finished. DO YOU HAVE A COLLECTIVE GAME PLAN IN MIND IN TRYING TO ACHIEVE GREATER SUCCESS WITH THE NEXT ALBUM? ALAN Its always suggested that the second album is a hit or miss for bands, the dreaded second album. But for us this could be the

We knew before we started playing live with the style of music we were creating that we wouldn’t be setting the charts alight or enjoying a flavor of the month media storm. We wouldn’t know where to start with composing music that is targeted at a current trend, we wouldn’t know what was classed as trendy anyway! I don’t think we are “Down with the kids”. If our music has a timeless feel, it’s because all of us are channeling 20 years a piece of listening to and playing music. We have all been influenced over the years by bands we would class as timeless and monster riffs transcend generations and genres. THE ARTWORK CREATED BY GUITARIST TOM FOR THE BANDS SELF TITLED DEBUT ALBUM.
album to move us forward and build a good fan base so in a sense this could be treated like our first, if done right. It’s early days, to early to say really. We have started developing a plan but first we need to finish writing it and put them down in demo form. It might not even be an album, we could release a couple of ep’s instead this time. Who knows!!! We are still just finding who we are and what we want to do. IN A WORD HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE THE ASHES OF IRON SOUND? RICHI Grooveladenconcretebrontosaurus. TOM Organic, expressive, expansive, heavy and melodic with a hint of blueberries!
ARE THERE HIDDEN JOKES WITHIN THE LYRICS OF ANY OF YOUR SONGS? IF SO DISCUSS! ALAN I can’t say there is, really, jokes lose their laughter after a while so to me it’ll ruin the song if it becomes annoying. If something funny has happened to us or something funny we all relate to it’s always best to be kept in that moment. Some of our song titles are a bit odd, so that could be funny to some. But saying that, on one of our new songs live, we have a line that says “the chickens fu**ing done” I guess that’s funny. Not sure if that line will be on the next album though. Videos are a good way to show humour. Just look at the likes of red fang, not a comedy band but great vids.
YOUR GIG POSTERS AND CD ARTWORK HAVE ALWAYS BEEN CONSISTENT WITH A CERTAIN STYLE THROUGHOUT THE YEARS, CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THAT PROCESS? TOM I wanted to avoid tested iconography and cliches, a lot of rock/metal bands can end up visually becoming a parody of their perceived persona. It is also a visual minefield in the sense that the wrong choice of imagery or design style can give the wrong clues to the music represented. A lot of the lyrical content of Ashes Of Irons songs examine or have a narrative about the human condition, or explore inner battles of the mind. At the root of most things is temptation and the dream of empowerment. I liked the idea of some early artists like Bosch portraying universal temptation by uniting human and animal forms, and find the visual grace of nature at its best in the female form and the majesty of Earth’s creatures. I enjoy the creative possibilities of the beauty and the beast relationship and up to now I think the beauty is winning. For me personally the art work for our album was my biggest creative challenge to date. I had to produce the best work I had ever done for the worst possible clients, myself and my band mates. The artwork retains a consistency because I produce it all myself, there is probably as much chance of letting someone else do it as Alan letting someone else write the lyrics! WHAT ARE THE MAIN INFLUENCES OF THE BAND, BE IT MUSIC OR ANY OTHER SOURCE? TOM Everyone of us has different musical preferences but when we play we seem to create a sound bigger than the sum of our parts ,which works for us. Sonically there are elements of stoner, grunge, punk, metal, blues, doom and of course the classics like sabbath, zepp, lizzy, motorhead, acdc, beatles etc... We can only write and perform the music that comes naturally out of us, which we then collectively mold till it sounds and feels good to our brains. As a band we don’t have to answer to anyone or compromise our
“as Alan Partridge says “I’m bouncing back”... SINGER ALAN ON OVER COMING THE BANDS TOUGH TIMES
music to please others. Ashes Of Iron is our vehicle to experience and express music physically and creatively, we don’t listen to or have any interest in what the masses are into. We cater to ourselves, and by doing so cater to a section of people who require a bit more power and depth in their music taste. The biggest reward for us is all the people who come to our shows and express appreciation for the fruits of our labours, it makes the time and effort required to be in a band worth while. ALAN I think music influence is a hard question to answer. Each member has a different look on music so that makes us sound like who we are. As far as writing a riff or a verse or whatever, I could be in front of a tv watching countdown and something will either develop in my head and ill rush to a guitar, or sing it into a recording device or I could just move around a guitar till something comes. Sometimes it doesn’t work and ill suck at countdown instead. Cat, bat, to, car... It’s a thing that pretty much my whole day is about writing songs in my head. So anything can inspire us what I’m trying to say. RICHI Inspiration doesn’t always happen to me If I’m just sat playing guitar, I could be at work or walking down the street and get an idea pop in my head and need to get to a guitar. But luckily in this day of age the phone can record so I can hum a riff or melody into it my phone. Might look funny to others but it’s still creating. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BEST MOMENT FOR THE BAND TO DATE? ALAN We would say it differs from person to person. Mine would be hearing the album all complete for the first time and having the whole
package in my hands. It was a little private win for me, I was and I’m still proud of it. RICHI With me it was it was the recording the album that I will always remember. The lengths we went to get it how we wanted it got us to know the start if what we can do if we really want it. A massive learning curve. And putting down ideas we never heard prior to recording. It was an incredible experience and can’t wait to do it again. But get better, we are in a different place now and think we can get better. TOM The Electric ballroom gig in London was a cool moment in time, but so was taking delivery of the boxes of cds from the printers, putting on the album loud and looking at all the artwork which had taken a very long time to do. Everything became tied together in this little 12x12 ish case. ... AND THE WORST? ALAN I can’t say that as a band there has been a horrible moment, we’ve played some shows that are just badly organised and no one there etc, but all bands go through that at some point.
ALAN But as Alan Partridge says “I’m bouncing back” WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM ASHES OF IRON IN THE NEAR FUTURE? ALAN Who’s to know. All we can do is do what we do and see what journey it takes us. I would hope we can expand on where we are now. TOM We are all very happy with the direction the new stuff is going and continue to raise the bar on ourselves with our songwriting. While we take our time with the new album there are several videos in the pipeline and shows at a load of different cities to sort out. Ideally we’d like to play our first shows outside the UK as well, especially Germany. We’re going to keep doing what we do and hope cool things come our way every once in a while, and that more people discover and enjoy what we create l

TOM Venues, promoters and bands are generally human beings so shit will happen. We tend to file issues under “paying our dues” but we also have very long memories.

ALAN I would say that 2013 has been the lowest point for us, when it comes to focus and only playing a few shows all year.

BIG BEAT BRONSON Words Matthew Laidlow
Music has the power to make people react in different ways. From messy relationship associations to fond memories of times gone by. But where has all the fun gone? Recently, lyrics in pop songs have been dissected and analysed whilst performers themselves are given a ticking off by frustrated commentators who attempt to launch a single crusade to make everything dull and non offensive. Is it a forgotten art that you can make music, have fun, keep people happy and deliver a killer live experience? If your faith has been lost, then you need to get Big Beat Bronson in your life. Not quite hip hop, electronica or rap, all of the best elements have been taken and put together to form tracks that serve up an audio slap in the face with bags of attitude and Geordie-isms thrown in. ‘Get Wild Gan Mental’ in particular reeks of North East charm and a funky guitar strumming, despite any authority presumably thinking it would soundtrack a Grand Theft Auto rampage. But what really makes Big Beat Bronson stand out from the crowd and offer something unique is their non serious approach to their videos, gigs and press shots. Given your standard indie band, you’ll be faced with another act with shrugged shoulders, standing next to a wall and all wearing a shocked expression like they’ve just seen their parents going at it.
The video for new single ‘Nothing’, out the on 3rd November shows that even though the band are going places with them signing to Bad Boys Records, Big Beat Bronson haven’t changed their approach from creating videos with some flair and creativity attached. Early tracks such as ‘Impact’ showed a gritty DIY approach and now with the support of a label, more concepts can be explored. ‘Nothing’ is track destined to bring a dancefloor together, as it brings together epic guitar work, big beats and flirtations of dubstep and a belting chorus. As a live act, you’re not only guaranteed a set which will get you moving, but a unique performance every single time. You can argue that a bands role is to perform and catch your interest and Big Beat Bronson ticks both of these boxes. With gigs performed as the Marshmallow man from Ghostbusters and all members in matching onesies, the ethos from the band is simple. Just enjoy yourself, they certainly are l www.bigbeatbronson.com www.badboysrecords.co.uk

TALK LIKE TIGERS Words Matthew Laidlow
Creating and making music for people to hear has always been, and always will be, the ambition for anyone who picks up an instrument. Whenever a band releases material, fans will often scream out for more. A major label may want to squeeze every last drop of success from an act before they discover the hippest new thing. But quantity can certainly hamper quality. This is not the case with Talk Like Tigers, quality always comes first! The duo, consisting of twins Charlotte and Stephanie have had bands before and have experimented with different genres. After studying music at university they stayed in London and traveled nationally and internationally performing backing vocals for Duffy. On returning to the North East they formed their own bands and have played at a number of local venues. As Talk Like Tigers they have now created a sound they are both happy with. They compose using keyboards together with Logic and Pro Tools. They also capture ideas on the move on their iphones where the humming of a melody into a voice memo app can later be used to craft the bare bones of future recordings. Although they have not got a full album of tracks ready yet, a telling sign of what is to come can be found via their official website: www. talkliketigers.com. Their new song, ‘Forbidden Fruit’, is already gaining positive responses from BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio. With a wonderfully vintage synthpop sound running all the way through ‘Forbidden Fruit’, there aren’t multiple layers of sound clashing with each other for your attention. The killer hook certainly demands another listen. A live acoustic version of another one of their songs ‘I Feel Your Love’ is currently available for free on their Soundcloud (www.soundcloud. com/talkliketigers), demonstrating that they always have the edge performing live. Talk Like Tigers have been influenced by a range of different genres. This stimulates ideas, melodies and lyrics Interesting lyrics, electronic sound, soulful yet poppy vocals an unusual combination, but it works.

LOVE
Here at NE LOVE we are all about unique ideas, great British innovation and a DIY ethic and those are three things that brand new North East brand Loudist have in spades.
NEL VE.CO.UK / SEVENTY6
Established by friends Chris Longbottom and Matt Miller, Loudist create totally unique speaker systems housed inside vintage suitcases, creating one off pieces of luggage that they have wittily dubbed, Dubcases. We sat down with Matt to find out what inspired them to create such a seemingly unusal product, the importance they place on handmade quality and what makes their product stand out in a sea of audio innovation. “The idea initially came from Chris, when he saw his brother-in-law playing with a portable bluetooth speaker and thought that the audio quality wasn’t actually that great. So he went about looking to see if he could build something better but on the same principles. We wanted something more inventive, appropriate and generally cool, we were striving to create something with real character” For Matt and Chris, that character came from Vintage suitcases, presenting them with an opportunity to create unique pieces, tailoring bespoke audio set ups and put to use knowledge gained from their differing fields of expertise.
“WE JUST WANT TO MAKE REALLY CREATIVE PRODUCTS, THAT HAVE CHARACTER, ARE FUN AND ARE GENUINELY WORTHWHILE”
“I studied architecture and Chris did Computer science and we’ve both always been building things, from segways and wind farm software to vintage valve amplifiers and guitars, we have always had a massive enthusiasm for audio products and innovative product design, Matt goes on to say “We’ve managed to source a variety of vintage luggage and audio equipment from the UK, and have tried to ensure that each case has to have an element of character about it. After hunting down new and vintage studio
monitors, hi-fi systems – basically any really good speaker units - we then built our own batteries that have the right power and lifespan to play your music. Every Dubcase is kitted out with reliable amplifiers that have the capability to really kick out some serious volume” This focus on hand sourcing and hand building their own products has led them to create an incredibly impressive selection of products but they insist they aren’t a brand that rest on their laurels and even at this early stage are looking to the future. “We want to do things just a bit out of the box for Loudist, once a product becomes standardised, it can become mundane and loses it’s appreciation. We’ve definitely got adventurous ambitions when it comes to the Dubcase range of produce and other hybrid audio devices, I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise but there are big things on the horizon” l
