Reduce your fire risk

Live Nelson

With all the long, hot summer days we’ve been enjoying, it’s a timely reminder for us to ensure we’re being FIRE SMART. In a rural fire, most homes burn down through hot embers being blown onto or into them. Here are some tips to reduce the risk of you losing your home.

NELSON CITY COUNCIL

• Keep roofs and gutters free of leaves • Ensure no embers can blow under the house • Don’t store flammable material under your house • Keep 1-2 metres from your home free of flammables,

MAYOR'S BOUQUET

Saxton Oval ready for the world About 4500 fans enjoyed watching the Black Caps beat Sri Lanka at last month’s One Day International at Saxton Oval, which proved to be a great venue.

Around 6000 spectators are expected for each of the three ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 matches being played here on Monday 16 February, Thursday 19 February and Thursday 5 March. Final preparations are well under way to make sure Nelson is ready to play host to the cricketing world. Festival of Cricket Fun

Transport to Saxton Oval

February 14 will see Nelson’s 111 Street Party in full swing, so get down to the Fanzone in 1903 Square, open 10.30am-6pm, for big screen coverage of the Black Caps v Sri Lanka. And if you need a break from cricket, the city centre will be bustling with the Trafalgar Street Market Day and Wine and Food celebrations. Go shopping for local arts, crafts, designer clothing and gifts, or enjoy a taste of our region’s wines, beers and gourmet food. Other Festival events to check out are the Kids Cricket, from 10am-4pm at Tahunanui sports fields, and the Nelson 111 World Record attempt on February 15.

While there is generous parking at Saxton Field, you might prefer to travel by bike and make the most of free valet bike parking. Get Moving will keep an eye on your bike and even get their mechanics to check it over while you enjoy the match. There will also be spot prizes including snap bands, puncture repair kits, maps and high visibility gear. Alternatively, buy a return bus ticket for just $5. Tickets must be purchased in advance from Nelson’s iSite. Buses leave from Millers Acre between 9.30-11.30am, returning from Saxton Oval 30 minutes after the end of the match.

This month’s recipients are Alison and Malcolm Ross, who helped organise last year’s Mayors’ Christmas Dinner, spreading Christmas cheer to senior citizens who may otherwise spend the day alone. Alison and Malcolm really went the extra mile, spending many hours visiting shops and checking prices to source almost all the food not donated by local businesses. Alison also purchased 191 gifts to give to delighted guests and made all the table decorations. Malcolm drove a van on the day, taking guests to the venue and home again. It’s a pleasure to be able to publicly recognise their invaluable contribution. Thanks too to all those who offered their time and goods to support this worthwhile event. If you know someone you consider worthy of a Mayor's Bouquet, just follow these easy steps: • Submit the nominated recipient's name and contact details, along with 150 words on why they deserve recognition - usually for going the extra mile to perform services to our community unpaid and unsung. • Send via post to Mayoral Bouquet, Nelson City Council, PO Box 645, Nelson 7040 or email to mayorsbouquet@ncc.govt.nz. Remember to include your name and contact details. The Mayor's Bouquet is brought to you in association with Woodlea Florist, Bridge Street, Nelson.

NELSON RECYCLING 2015

Please 'pop the top' for smarter recycling

GLASS COLLECTION Jars, Bottles. Don’t put them in a bag just straight in the bin.

It’s now time to change over to your new 2015 recycling calendars which were sent to all residents just before Christmas. If you have not received a calendar they are available from the Council’s Customer Service Centre and also available online. To assist Nelmac to make the most of Nelson City Council’s kerbside recycling scheme, residents are asked to take a few seconds to remove the tops from plastic drink bottles prior to placing them in blue bins. Both the bottles and tops are recyclable, but they do need to part company before entering the recycling process. Trapped air in capped plastic bottles inhibits the squashing and baling process and reduces the affordability of recycling overall. Thank you for keeping our city’s recycling scheme working efficiently.

A series of presentations are also being held on Te Tauihu Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Top of the South Treaty of Waitangi) Settlements, which came into effect on 1 August 2014. These presentations aim to explain the history and tools available to help the wider community understand what the Treaty Settlement means for them. Presentations will be held in the Elma Turner Library activity room on:
