01 INTERSTICE FACTORY

2023 | 4th Year Industrial | Hulsey Yard, Atlanta, GA [All Drawings Inside are Self-Done] Collaborators: Emmanuel Olasiyade Eric Newnan Hulsey yard sits as an under-utilized industrial lot which the Interstice Solar Panel Factory seeks to revitalize. It challanges the traditional factory typology by intergrating the public into the complex process of photovoltaic manufacturing through the layering of its distinct programs and circulation. A “social condenser” is created which generates moments of interaction and education between the public and the workers.

The site hosts a beltline trail extension, connecting it to a public transport node (Inman Park Marta station) and inviting the public to engage with the whole factory site and its program. Sections of the existing metal perimeter fence are repurposed as murals for local artists while existing, graffitied ones near the existing beltline are saved and celebrated. Each pavilion is roofed with solar panels, providing nice shady areas while generating energy.

02 VERTICHEN CULINARY SCHOOL

2023 | 3rd Year Education, Commercial | Westside, Atlanta Situated on the edge of the lower income neighborhood, Bankhead, this midrise culinary school and commercial center seeks to be an intergrated part of the community both socially and economically. The constructed, rolling slope rises seamlessly from the ground plane, extending the available green space for utilization as a community owned food garden.

< Mapping of Bankhead, Atlanta neighborhood food desert. Few grocery stores that exist (here marked in red) overwhelmingly sell frozen and processed foods with very little produce selection.

< The conceptual sketch further investigates the systems and part relationships of the project. Especially the divide between theory (classrooms, library) and practice (test kitchens, restaurant).

As a gesture connecting to the westside community economically, the Vertichen Culinary School is sited next to a planned beltline trail extension (connecting to the eastern neighborhoods). Urban stairs are added on the east side to connect to the Joseph E. Lowery Blvd sidewalk (connecting the site straight to the neighborhoods to the south).

03 SCULPTED LIGHT THEATER PLAZA

2022 | 3rd Year Commerical | Downtown, Atlanta On the site of the abandoned Medical Arts Building and parking deck, this urban renewal project offers plenty of unique "third spaces" open to the public without need for spending money. The former Medical Arts Building's materials have been recycled into the new construction and now stands as a monument as well as a renewed space.

The west axis of the site welcomes the public with a grand entry combining a bus stop, parking deck entry, and proximity to the Marta Station (which is on the next street over). The public restroom/ shower building provides an additional gesture to the less fortunate members of the community who are housing insecure and without access to these facilities. The former Medical Arts Building is converted into a usuable monument to protect it from total demolition, typical of Atlanta's historic architecture.
