Dashers hurt bars Andrew Board Some Nelson bars and restaurants have been forced to hold customers drivers licences as security after losing thousands of dollars to “dine ‘n’ dashers”. The term is used to explain those who order drinks and food on a tab before running out on the bill. Speight’s Ale House co-owner Gareth Caldwell says his restaurant, open for less than a month, has started holding either a credit card or drivers licence before opening a tab for customers who want to sit outside. “I didn’t expect that sort of thing when we opened in Nelson,” he says. “We’ve had about $2000 worth of bills walk out the door. One family we saw on the security tape was pretty blatant about it; they looked around to see where the staff were and then walked straight out through the garden bar.” But more established bar and restaurant owners say they also enforce the credit card rule after being burnt themselves. Ian Williams, owner of the Vic Brew Bar, formerly the Victorian Rose, says he has been doing the practice since his family took over the business. “We hold credit cards for people sitting outside, it has been a problem for us in the past but this year has been better than last year. We’ve only had one [dasher] that I can remember.” Other bars and restaurants spoken to by Nelson Weekly also hold credit cards or drivers licences for food tabs, especially for those sitting in outdoor areas. Gareth says most customers understand when asked for the security. “Some get a bit upset but the reality is we can’t continue to lose that sort of money.”

The sunniest of them all

Jazz festival still hits the right notes with fans The new director of the Nelson Jazz Festival says a strong turnout from locals ensured it was one of the best yet and had "probably more of a community feel than ever before". The Nelson Jazz Festival celebrated its 21st year over the past week with 50 concerts being held in parks, wineries

and bars all over the region. Poor weather hampered the earlier concerts but as the weather got better so did the crowds, says festival director Liam Ryan. "It was a brilliant festival and we are very happy with it. The musicians loved it and the audience really got into it. By the end of

the festival we had huge crowds." The festival is hosted by the Nelson Jazz Club and around 50 members spent days volunteering their time to ensure its success, says Liam. The festival is also supported by Nelson City and Tasman District Councils and a long list of sponsors.

Whakatane mayor Tony Bonne is due to fly into Nelson on Friday to offically conceed defeat in the sunshine race to his counterpart, Aldo Miccio. Nelson’s final memories of 2011 may not concur, but the city has reclaimed its title as the sunniest place in New Zealand, it was confirmed last week. In the space of two weeks Nelson set two records: the city with the heaviest rainfall in New Zealand history and the city with the highest sunshine hours. The sunshine record is one Nelsonians will take far more pleasure out of though, after losing its crown to Whakatane in 2010. Whakatane finished third with Tekapo in second. But the rain, which caused millions of dollars’ worth of damage in the final weeks of 2011, did its best to also take the sun title from Nelson. At the start of December Nelson held sunshine hour lead of almost 100, but the end of the year it had been reduced to just 24 hours. But a win is a win and Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says he’s thrilled that the title has rightfully been returned to the sunshine city. “It’s what we’re known for and why people come to visit us, so it’s great to say that we are once again the sunniest.” Tony is due to meet Aldo on Friday to hand back a sunhat that was given to him by Aldo, says Nelson Tasman Tourism CEO Lynda Keene. "Upon winning the highest sunshine hour title last year, Mayor Bonne sent Aldo a can of Whakatane sunshine. It's all in good heart," she says. Aldo says he has a year's worth of pent-up sun banter to throw the way of the Bay of Plenty town and its mayor. "We see each other at meetings and he always chucks in a little joke so it will be good to give it back," he laughed. It is understood One News will be on hand to report the handover of the hat.

New screen a hit for old movies Hours upon hours of watching silent black and white film has given Antony Hodgson an appreciation for classic cinema, an appreciation he is sharing with Nelson this summer as the SolarCity Summer Movies hit parks and reserves across the Nelson region, with a brand new screen to boot. Isle Park played host to the new 7000 ANSI Lumens High Definition Projector on Friday night as the summer series moves around the region from Tahuna to Takaka and Tapawera. As dusk fell on a somewhat gloomy night the field in front of Isel House was packed with people braving the weather to watch

‘Silent Antics’ from the masters of slapstick; Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Laurel & Hardy. Picnic dinners, camping chairs and aperitifs were in abundance but those that bought bean bags, pajamas and blankets looked the most cozy. With the outdoor movies now in their 17th year the combination of a relaxed atmosphere, gold coin entry fee and classic cinema has proved a winning formula. “I spent many a late night watching videos from Aro Valley Video, sitting through hours of silent film to come up with my favorites to share with everyone, so I hope you like it,” says Antony.

Grey Power: Flood them with emails The proposed closure of a discount pharmacy has led the local Grey Power president to declare a call-to-arms of sorts. Gordon Currie says many Grey Power members use the Warehouse Pharmacy because it is the cheapest in town and its proposed closure at the end of January will hurt them. He says he has received plenty of phone calls from Grey Power members upset with its closure so he is urging them to follow the lead of Blenheim customers who emailed head office en masse and were granted “a stay of execution”. The Warehouse is closuring its six Pharmacy’s nationwide but it appears the Blenheim store will continue to operate. The Warehouse pharmacist national manager Trevor Lloyd says it is never too late to petition for the Nelson store to remain open. “Blenheim was performing really well and Nelson does have other issues, like it would have to move the pharmacy in the store, but there is always a chance,” he says. Gordon says if users of the Warehouse Pharmacy want it bad enough they should “flood them with emails” and hope for Nelson’s own stay of execution. “From my understanding, the Warehouse received a lot of feedback from Blenheim people but they were surprised that they didn’t get much from Nelson. I told them it’s because I’ve been getting it all. Lizz admits with the way technology has developed, that pen pals are probably a rare breed in a world of email and social networking. But the two women still stick to their letters, which may be Segrid’s influence. “She’s just not into it, which is awkward because I’ve got the computer and I could email. But they haven’t got the same at the other end. I’ve been doing pottery for years and my cartilage has given up in my thumb joints so I don’t find it easy to write anymore.” So Lizz, instead, types up her letters on the computer, prints them out and then sends them away. Lizz has visited Segrid five times, and Segrid once came to Scotland. Lizz is still hoping for another visit, but this time to New Zealand. But Peter doesn’t fly. “If he goes anywhere he has to drive. So when I went to visit them with my daughter they drove to the airport to pick us up and it’s quite a drive. He just loves driving. But that does mean they’ve never been to New Zealand, which is a shame because they’d love it. I doubt they’ll ever get here, but I’d like to think they will. If not them, then maybe one of their daughters or granddaughters.” Lizz didn’t know anyone else in her class that had kept in touch with their pen pal for this long. “We’ve been corresponding all that time and she’s kept every letter I’ve sent her.” She says the best part about meeting Segrid was getting to know another culture. “There’s different foods, different habits, but there’s still that human contact.” Another letter looks set to leave Nelson addressed to Germany later this month, packed with it a clipping from this newspaper, telling Lizz’s story of her friendship that started with a piece of paper and a pen way back in 1953.

New Years fire for real estate firm A fire that appears to have been deliberately lit was mere minutes away from destroying a Richmond business, says its owner and the fire service. Businesswoman Lydia Heyward received a phone call shortly after 4am on New Year’s Day to say the back of her Queen St-based real estate business had been set on fire. The fire caused thousands of dollars’ worth of damage and cut phone lines for several Richmond businesses for more than a day. It also melted cables, destroyed aluminium joinery and plumbing. Work to repair the damage was still ongoing this week. Richmond fire chief Ralph Lonsdale says the building was just minutes away from being totalled. “It could have been disastrous; we arrived just in the nick of time.” The alarm was raised by members of the Richmond Community Patrol who were out keeping an eye on the town in the early hours of the morning. Lydia says she was gutted when she arrived to see the fire service putting out the fire. “I was really disappointed, it’s a new building and it’s just such a shame

that it happened and I’m disappointed that there are people out there that could do that. If the community patrol had been five minutes later [in reporting the fire] it could have been really serious.” The intensity of the fire was so great it melted the glass sitting in the building. Nelson CIB detective Kelvin Heiford says an investigation into the fire is still ongoing and they have several positive leads but say if anyone has any information about the fire, to get in touch. “There were a lot of people hanging around that time of the morning so if anyone has some information we would certainly be happy to know about it. But the investigation is continuing and we hope to have some positive results in the next couple of days.” This isn’t the first time a Queen St business has been the victim of a likely arson; in 2010 Boutereys Restaurant was also set on fire, causing minor damage to the back of the restaurant. But Ralph says there has been little in the way of deliberately lit fires since then and this appears to be an isolated incident. It was a busy welcome to the New Year for the city's police officers, with 49 arrests being made on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The high number of arrests is normal for local police over the holiday with almost half being alcohol-related incidents. Around 20 people were arrested for breach of the liquor ban, by carrying opened bottles or cans of alcohol in areas of the city where it is prohibitied. Nelson Bays Acting Area Commander Inspector Ross Lienert says he was much happier with the behaviour of Nelsonians and visitors to the

region over the holiday period. He says arrests for disorderly-type behaviour were on par with previous years. The big disappointment for police was the large number of people caught drink-driving. Ross says police nationally had worked hard prior to the holiday period to ensure people were aware of the risks of drinking and driving. "In Nelson Bays a number of people have continued to ignore that message and have subsequently risked their own and other innocent members of the public's lives. That is very disappointing."

Art couple prepare for garden exhibition Jonthan McKeown

Art Group Nelson artist Murray Campbell’s true passion is Model Railways, a hobby that didn’t surface until “three years after we were married”, says wife and fellow artist Judy. Art was never a part Murray’s environment or interest until he decided to join Judy on an art tuition course "for a holiday", but by morning tea on the first day he was hooked, says Judy. Murray and Judy are among the 50 local artists exhibiting at Art Group Nelson’s annual summer art exhibition at Queen’s Gardens this weekend. Paintings, glass, wood ware, garden art and much more will be on show and available for purchase this Saturday and Sunday from 10am – 4pm with the weekend of 21 and 22 reserved if the weather doesn’t play its part. After discovering the “agony and ecstasy of painting” Murray now combines his scenic painting of the South Island’s mountains and lakes

with his love of Model Railways. Many a train room both here in Nelson and around the country features Murray's painted back-scenes with his latest measuring 3.5 by 1.2 meters. Judy’s love of art was fostered throughout her life by some great artistic talents, originally by Gwen Rew, an artist and teacher, who came to live on her family farm when Judy was 12. More recently the tuition of Graham Braddock has helped to develop Judy’s affinity with watercolour pastels and oils. Judy will have her weaved wall hangings called ‘Paintings in Wool’ available at the exhibition. Judy says retiring to Nelson in 1994 gave her and Murray the time to enjoy the luxury of discretionary time together. Being involved in the art community they have met and enjoyed the company of many interesting and talented people. “The creative and beautiful environment is everything one could wish for, and boredom has no place in this lovely city,” says Judy.

High point of career for Lowe Former Nelson College fullback and Tasman Mako sevens player James Lowe has been selected for the New Zealand Sevens squad by super-coach Gordon Tietjens. The selection came after the Makos won the bowl trophy, capping off a great weekend for the side at the Pub Charity national sevens tournament in Queenstown. The young side, led by New Zealand sevens player and Nelson sportsman of the year, Shane Christie, won the

bowl after beating Hawkes Bay in the final 31-22. Earlier, Tasman were competitive in a tough pool, drawing with Bay of Plenty, losing narrowly to North Harbour and running short on gas against a strong Canterbury side. The Makos were then sent to the bowl competition where they beat Southland and Northland in the quarter and semi finals respectively before their final win. Auckland went on to win the competition.

Nelson might well be home for national youth croquet representative Jarrod Coutts, but right now it’s just the halfway point on a 2000 kilometer coaching journey throughout the entire country. From Invercargill to Whangarei, Jarrod’s summer job is helping coach association and golf croquet players throughout New Zealand, building up their skills, identifying talent, as well as helping his own aspirations in becoming a physical education teacher. Jarrod has spent a day with each club in New Zealand, coaching 180 minutes of croquet. “It’s just for player development and seeing if there are some players that should be in the national squads. It’s pretty cool for me because I got a lot of coaching in the past, so it’s a way for me to put something back into the game as well as earning a bit of coin too,” says the former Nayland College student. A grant has helped finance Jarrod’s trip, although New Zealand Croquet also chip in for his travel costs. The coaching, though, means Jarrod has had to put his own playing career on the back-burner. “I had a couple of average results overseas last year so I’m taking a bit of break from competitive playing, so this is a way to still be involved in the game.” He says the majority of the players are older, although he helped mentor a 16 year-old girl from South Canterbury, which was positive, seeing another generation pick up the sport. “The oldest I’ve coached is 85. But they enjoy learning new things. They might not get to the top but if they get something out of the session and have a little bit of fun, then I think that’s my job done.” The coaching role is something Jarrod is definitely interested in. “It’s something I enjoy and it’s something I think that people need to take them to the next level.” So far Jarrod has mapped his way through the South Island and has already set sail for the North Island where he is due to finish around the 24th.

The strapping flanker had been named in a national secondary school squad to train with sevens coach Gordon Titjens this week and had been aiming for national honours with the secondary school team later this year. But he will instead be re-focusing on gettting fit again after undergoing surgery at Nelson Hospital last Friday. rUnning: In 1994 the Nelson Striders made international press when, while out for their Sunday pack run up the Maitai Valley, a wild boar sent them scurrying up a steep bank to avoid an extremely agitated attack. Instead it’s won by whoever paces themselves closest to their estimate without a watch for 21.1km. These fish don’t fight as hard as the ones in deeper water but all the same will take you to the cleaners if you don’t take it easy. Troll about 6-7 knots, stay between 7-12 meters. Early morning when the sun first hits the water is a good time to do it or late in the evening. Another option is the mussel farms with some big numbers getting caught on stickbaits, poppers and jigs. French Pass is still very slow with all the fish up around Nelson at the moment. Not much to report on D’urville Island and Stephen's Passage apart from good sized coutta to be taken. Help yourselves to them, they are in good numbers and easy to hook up. Expensive jigs are normally the best, they are magnets to them. Inner sounds are finally starting to get some fish but has been very slow, and now all the holiday makers are there you will be best to fish later at night or early in the morning until everyone goes back home. Futsal comp starting at Saxton It’s no fluke that the two best futsal nations hold world domination on the football pitch as well. The five a-side indoor adaptation of football is making its way to Nelson on a more formal basis, and it’s hoped that the sport will not only boost the footballing talents in the region but create a pathway for those wishing to play futsal at a higher level.

Nelson prepares for Colgate Games It just keeps getting better for sprinter Jonas Kale. Fresh from claiming the prized gold medal in the Boys 14 100m at the North Island Colgate Games in Tauranga over the weekend, the Nayland College student will be hoping to do it all again in Nelson this week as he sinks his teeth into the South Island Colgate Games. Jonas ran an impressive 11.68 seconds in the final, a huge personal best in a season that also saw him reach the semi final of the junior boys 100m at the New Zealand Secondary School Championship despite having another year left in that division. Jonas was clearly stoked with his win, beating hot favourite John Auga. “Everyone expected him to win so I thought that second would be my best chance,” says Jonas. But he knew that a strong start would be his best bet to win the race and after getting out in front early, Jonas never looked back. Jonas, who is coached by his father and sprint coach Dennis Kale, says the difference for 2012 has been the addition of strength and power trainings. “I think that has helped a lot and I’ve grown a lot more and I’m stronger now.” Jonas also finished third place in the 200m with a personal best of 24.32 seconds. After his win up north, Jonas is confident about his 100m. He says hosting the event will also play into his hands. “I think it will. You’ve got the comfort of being able to go home and have a shower and sleep when everyone else has to hang around at the track or go back to their motel. It would be pretty cool I reckon [to win another gold medal] because it’d rank me around the top three in New Zealand. So I’d be pretty bloody stoked with that really.” The South Island Colgate Games will feature around 800 athletes aged 14 years-old and younger. It will be held from January 13-15 at Saxton Oval.

Stoke/Nayland rain on Wakatu’s club day hopes Wakatu walked off the field from their first match of the Twenty20 Nelson Cricket competition at Victory Square on Saturday with a spring in their step and hopes running high they could pull off a winning doubleheader on their club day – then along came Stoke/Nayland. Wakatu had put Wanderers to the sword, with Mason Robinson top scoring with 78 and skipper Shane Laurence (pictured left taking a catch to dismiss Wanderers batsman Dan Cooper) smashing 34 off just 9 balls. But Stoke/Nayland, also fresh from a win in their first match against Waimea Toi Toi United, put their batting under enough pressure to force a collapse and take maximum points from the first of two rounds of Twenty20 for the region’s top cricketers. Athletic College Old Boys also won both its games at the Botanic’s, scoring a massive 215 in their first match against Motueka. ACOB then went on to easily beat defending champions WTTU. Shane says the club day at Wakatu was a great occasion and he was thrilled to see old boys and sponsors come along. “We had a sausage sizzle, life member Jeff Rackley spoke and then all the captains got up to speak. Christchurch horse Tom and Jerry was the favourite to capture the Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Cup on Sunday and he did so, despite some mousing around on the starting line. Tom and Jerry couldn’t stand still, delaying the beginning of the race. But once the race started, driver Dexter Dunn never looked back and finished a remarkable race in first position. Over the two days $394,000 was taken on course from bets with $1.9 million collected off course. Brightwater trainer George Hill went closest to posting a win for the Nelson trainers when Living Lord was just caught by a fraction on Sunday’s third race. Living Lord pressed into the lead entering the home straight crowd, but was caught in the final stride by a fast-finishing Lively Eastburn. On Friday, local horses Rehab and Jass captured first place finishes, but couldn’t replicate similar feats on day two.

Nelson driver wins SI title Phillip Rollo Brett Nicholls’ crew will be insuring his car is “bulletproof ” heading into the New Zealand Superstock Championship in a few week’s time. The 48n driver claimed his second South Island Superstock Championship title in three years last weekend and hopes his performance in a new car was the perfect warm up heading into Huntly at the end of this month. Beating top drivers like Dale Ewers, Craig Boote and Shane Harwood, Brett understands the significance of his win. He finished first twice and earned a fifth place finish, not bad in a field of 18 cars. “It was good to win at home in front of the home crowd. When you’ve got the likes of the two Boote cars, Shane Harwood, Dale Ewers, Blair Cunningham, they’re all big names. I was overthe-moon to win the South Island Champs again.

I won in 2009, so to back it up, I’m happy as.” He had set four key goals this season and the win in Nelson ticked off the first, in his new car. Next on the list is a visit to Rotorua for the World 240 Championship this weekend where he will face some of the North Island’s top drivers for the first time this season, followed by winning the New Zealand Superstock Championship in Huntly two weeks later, then gaining selection in the Nelson Tigers team’s racing squad for Palmerston North. Brett says he has been rapt with the success of the new car, despite a late start to the season, and he’s confident he has the power and the crew to win his first national title. “I just want to make sure it’s going to be bulletproof, and reliable as, because you need a reliable car to win a New Zealand title.” Brett would like to thank all of his crew and sponsors for their hard work in the 2011/12 season.
