Brook weeders win award Thousands of hours of voluntary weeding effort at Nelson’s Brook Waimarama Sanctuary have paid off – not just in a reduction of old man’s beard and banana passionfruit vine, but also in a double win in the Top of the South Weedbusters 2012 awards.
The sanctuary won the Weedbuster Award for Work on Private Land, and also the Overall Excellence Award in the annual awards, which are a joint initiative from DOC, the Tasman, Marlborough and Nelson councils, Landcare Trust and Landcare Research.
The sanctuary volunteer forest regeneration/weed control team has been eradicating invasive plants in the Sanctuary for five years. The Sanctuary won vouchers for native plants, tree shelters and the labour of 20 staff from BNZ in Nelson to help with weed control for a day.
Maitai River where a local man thinks a weir should be, similar to the weir in Bath, England, pictured right.
Ratepayer proposes weir for Maitai River
Councillors are considering the idea of a weir at the bottom of the Maitai River to help keep the river bed tidy and make more of a feature of the river. Stoke man George Truman says a half tide weir made out of boulders near Trailways would tidy the river and would be a low cost option to beautify the area, hide green slime and allow the water to run better. And it has some support. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says he personally likes the idea and would like to see a report further investigating it. Any proposal would need resource consent. George says he floated the idea a decade ago and it was not considered. He says he tried again because it could be a feature for the city. The half weir would be five feet high so water and fish could still travel over it easily.
“What I proposed was a weir made out of boulders similar to what’s at the Bridge St bridge. It isn’t going to cost a fortune and if it’s only at half tide height, the whitebait can swim over the top of the rocks and still come up the river.” He says when the tide came in it would lift any debris and float it out to sea, so it would end up reasonably tidy. “In the redevelopment of the CBD in Christchurch they are going to make a feature of the river and we in Nelson don’t make as much use of the river as we could.” George says now would be a good time to consider the project as the council is getting ready to remove flood material from the river. He says iwi will need to be consulted, “but the river is pretty artificial anyway”.

Community law under funding threat Rosie Thomsen The future of Community Law could be at risk if proposed funding cuts are seen through at next year's budget. The funding would be redirected to areas of highest need a national legal advice helpline, leaving some 26 autonomous community law centres around the country at risk of significant cuts to staff, resources, or even closure. Without proper needs analysis performed, the decision to cut funding would be made without taking the needs of particular communities into account, says Peter. Some GP visits now free for kids After hours GP visits in Nelson are now free for children under the age of six. The new policy came into effect at the start of this month after agreements between the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, Nelson Bays Primary Health and Kimi Hauora Wairau Marlborough PHO. NMDHB community based services directorate service manager Bruce Moorhead
says wherever possible patients should see their regular GP – they know their patients’ health needs best, but for urgent concerns after hours the new policy will benefit local families. “After hours services are for urgent health issues on evenings, weekends and public holidays when people would normally see their family doctor.”
As a first point of contact for after hours services he asked people in Nelson to call the nurse-led help line by phoning their regular GP. “This helpline will help you to establish whether to see your regular GP, or whether you should go to the After hours clinic,” says Bruce. “If you don’t have a regular GP, you should
enrol with one now before you get sick. “Enrolment with a GP encourages a strong relationship with the people who look after your health who will get to know you and/ or your family and be familiar with your health needs,” he says. The hours of opening for Nelson Medical and Injury Centre are 8am to 10pm every day.

All good things French will be the focus of celebrations for this year’s Bastille Day in Nelson – wine, food and, of course, Petanque. The Nelson Petanque Club is hosting a celebration for France’s national holiday this Saturday, July 14, at its Paru Paru Rd base. The origin of the game
dates back to 1907 in France and is now played worldwide. Club president Maria Clinton says she hopes the “fun day” will be an opportunity for new players to come along and give the game a go and she would like to see Nelson take a more active role in the game. “It’s a game all can enjoy and we’d love
to see the council provide space in parks and along river banks so people could have friendly lunchtime games or summer evening interaction.” The fun day starts at 1pm this Saturday. Everyone is welcome to come along and have a game. For more information call Maria on 548 9006.

School to fight closure Salisbury School was hoping for some good news this week but a summary of the Ministry of Education’s plan to close the school has still not been released. But the school’s board of trustees isn’t giving up hope and says it firmly believes Salisbury is worth every cent the government gives it. Earlier this year the Minster of Education announced plans to close four residential schools and replace them with a “wraparound service” for students with special needs. Richmond’s Salisbury School is a residential girls’ school that takes students with special needs from
all over the country. This month Nelson list MP Maryan Street delivered a petition against the closure to the minister, signed by 3190 people. Chair of the board, Helen MacDonald, says a wraparound service will not meet the needs of many who attend Salisbury. “At Salisbury we have a team with all the expertise that they have built up to meet the needs of these girls.” Some of the students who attend Salisbury come from abusive family homes so staying in their own community will not solve many of their problems. Helen says Salisbury provides girls with
self-esteem, confidence and new skills. “Sometimes you need to break cycles and you need to give them the opportunity to be in a safe, nurturing and structured environment which they may not be getting at home. At Salisbury they are taught how to stay safe. You can see these girls blossom during their time here because they’ve been given a chance.” She says the board will not give up on the school despite the announcement meaning the school could be closed by the end of the year. The board will submit an argument for it to remain open to the minister by August 6.

Stoke student wins mall model search Nadja Baden fought off a record number of contestants to be crowned the Richmond Mall Model Search winner for 2012. The tween beauty attends Broadgreen Intermediate School and has been in the country for only four years. Originally from Germany, Nadja entered the model search last year but could manage only a third placing in the intermediate category. This year Nadja came up trumps, winning the intermediate category and the overall title. Model search judge Leonie Trathen says Nadja had the “overall package” and highlighted the rawness of her modelling experience. “She’s going to be very good to photograph and very good on the catwalk. She’s got a lot of confidence and she did an amazing job,” says Leonie. Milla Brabyn was the winner of Miss Primary Richmond Mall for contestants between four and eight years old, Georgia Rae was the winner of Miss Junior Richmond Mall and Sabrina Hennings was the winner of Miss Teen Richmond Mall. Richmond Mall manager David Hill was delighted with the turnout for the seventh edition of the model search.

A horror of a show The Deep End is Nelson’s regular improvised comedy show and this month the Body in Space Improv Company will have you screaming in your seats, that’s a promise. Yes folks, it is Friday the 13th of July and the Deep End crew invites you to the Theatre Royal to experience the full horror of this special occasion, on stage. The Deep End is a show that is made up on-the-spot. The actors take your suggestions and use them to create scenes. It is dangerous, thrilling and often hilarious. Each monthly show has a new theme and a cast comprised of different actors from our skilled Nelson crew. This month, keep your
eyes peeled for guest appearances by characters from Nelson’s Theatre of Terror. The Horror Special is a chance to get dressed up in not your Sunday Best but your Friday Scariest. You are invited to dress up and to let loose in a fun crowd situation where calling out is encouraged. Take a team of intrepid improvisors, plunge them into a whirlpool of horrific audience suggestions and see if they sink or swim. Either way, you’re in for a great night of scary comedy in the style of ‘Fast and Loose’ and ‘Whose Line is it Anyway?’ Tickets are $15 and are available at The Theatre Royal.

Cycle trail extended with bridge opening The latest link in the cycle way was opened on Sunday with the bridge over the Wairoa River crossed by the public for the first time. Hundreds took to the track, many heading to Brightwater Domain, where the dedication ceremony was celebrated with attractions for the whole family. The track is part of the Tasman Great Taste Trail, and it allows an easy passage for cyclists from Richmond through to Wakefield, linking with the track that runs from Nelson to Mapua.
It is part of an initiative to create a series of “Great Rides” around New Zealand to showcase the natural beauty of the countryside and to stimulate the economy through tourism. “It’ll be great for tourism, and families as well. It’ll get people on the bike track and out of the traffic. It’s really good,” says cyclist George Terry. Gold coin donations raised $644 on the day to go towards the cycle trail. The next section of the track is due to open in October, with another to follow in December.

Masons prepare for tea They call it the longest morning tea but if last year’s numbers are anything to go by it could also be the largest. Last year Freemason groups across the country hosted the Longest Morning Tea, hoping it would become an annual tradition. In Nelson more than 170 people turned up, bringing a plate, listening to the Nelson Brass Band perform and generally having a good time. Organisers say last year was such a success they are hoping for an even bigger turnout this year. The Longest Morning Tea will be held at the Masonic Centre on Nile St this Saturday from 10am. Everyone is invited to come along with all proceeds going to the Nelson Brass Band, which
will be on hand again to provide the entertainment. Frosty Goodall says those coming along should bring a gold coin and a plate to share. "It's a very enjoyable day and we would welcome everyone from the community to come and enjoy it with us." After the morning tea there will be a book fair, also run by the Masons, with money going to its long standing Kirkpatrick Trust, which provides scholarships for girls to attend Nelson College for Girls. If you'd like to donate books for the fair you can either drop them off at the Masonic Centre on Saturday morning or give Lawrence MacDonald a call on 547 5817 to arrange a suitable time.

• One log ship departed, the tanker, three container vessels, one general carrier, the big car carrier Transfuture 6, ten fishing vessel movements, a fruit vessel, and the cement ships moved around the port last week. • The benign weather saw a great deal of fishing activity happening for smaller vessels. It has been good to see the increased numbers wearing lifejackets and children especially rugged up warmly. • Be wary of the weather in the coming months as the winds for spring will be here next month and can seriously catch the unwary out. • If your vessel has been laid up for the winter don’t forget to get the usual servicing and engine tuning done before you head back out to sea. • Have you changed your fuel since you used it last, drained the water, checked and changed the oil, charged the boat batteries? Standard maintenance can save your life and the lives of your passengers. If in doubt – don’t go out

Youth band wins national competition The Nelson Youth Brass Band is a national champion, winning its division at the NZ National Brass Band Championships over the weekend. Twenty nine bands competed at the champs in Timaru, across a range of divisions. The Nelson City Brass Band finished fifth in its division, a great achievement since it was the first time it had travelled to the nationals in a number of years.
Band conductor Nick Sharpe says the result was exciting for the band, from which 42 of the 57 members competed at the championships. “We rehearsed really well and really enjoyed the competition.” The bands took part in a march through Timaru’s main streets with the Nelson Youth Band leading the way. Nick says it was a highlight. “We led the parade of bands because we were the youngest. Put
all the pizazz we do into the march and it was really well received.” Fenella Deans of the Nelson band finished second in the junior trombone section while Jarrah Dowrick came third in the tuba solo section. Zane Maxwell finished fifth in a high quality senior open euphonium section. David Todd won the cup for administrator of the year at the competition.

Mens Shed to host NZ conference Phillip Rollo The Waimea Menz Shed will host the organisation’s national conference just one year after opening its doors in Richmond. Around 80 Menz Shed delegates and their partners are expected to attend the national conference over the summer period as Menz Shed Aotearoa links a relationship between all of the sheds around the country. The Menz Shed is a workshop where its members can spend time building projects with the shed’s tools and equipment in a social environment. The second ever national conference was recently held in Wellington where a national body was formed with representatives from different regions. In Wellington, it was decided that the next conference would come to Nelson, delighting local shed co-ordinator Alan Kissell.
“I hope it will create a bit more interest in the region I suppose. There’s seven sheds currently underway in the Nelson-Marlborough region which is more sheds per head of population than any other area,” he says. The Waimea Menz Shed’s membership currently sits at 90 following its opening last September. Other local sheds in the pipeline include Motueka, Golden Bay, Tapawera, Mapua, Picton, Renwick and Havelock. There are more than 40 sheds registered nationally with some of those holding a membership of more than 100. The Waimea Menz Shed, which includes members from Nelson, had been in the works for 18 months prior to opening and Alan says since that date it has really taken off. “There’s obviously such a need for it.” No date had been confirmed for the third national conference.

Paintball students shoot for championship
Nelson College student Bowyne Blanchet competes during the Paintball Nelson Appleby Cup on Friday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Waimea College was on target during its defence of secondary school paintball glory. The Paintball Nelson Appleby Cup was held last Friday with teams from Nayland College, Nelson College, Motueka High School and Waimea College taking part. The four teams of seven collected points throughout the day as they took each other on in a series of challenges, including capture the flag, speedball, black hawk down, Gettysburg and many other scenarios. Some of the games include “hit and you're out” rules where players must leave the field of play if they get shot. Other matches even saw schools team up and play two on two. Waimea College dominated most matches, pushing its buffer to more than 100 points over second place Nelson College. Nayland College was third. Due to its overwhelming success, Paintball
Improvements continue at Richmond Mall Construction will start at the Richmond Mall next month as it looks to future proof its premises ahead of potential expansion. A new entrance way is likely to be finished by the end of the year while the food court is being re-tiled. Richmond Mall manager David Hill says the two projects will “future proof ” the mall ahead of expansion next year. “The number one rule in a shopping centre is that you never box in your majors and this allows for future expansion of our majors, which are our two supermarkets and Farmers,” he says. New furniture will also be brought in throughout the largest shopping centre in the Top of the South. Work will occur from 6pm to 6am during the two and a half month re-tiling process. Meetings will be held this week to discuss which stores will need to be closed on what day during the re-tiling. There are 22 tenants affected,
David says. Economically, the Richmond Mall is 8.5 per cent above where it was last year and has doubled its share of the regional retail spend. That has given the mall owners confidence to prepare for the next stage of expansion. Westpac Richmond has confirmed that it will be moving into the mall next to Buonissimo at the eastern entrance. Westpac has given notice to its landlord on Queen St and will be trading in the new site by September. David says Westpac is a real draw card for the mall. “Elements of the bank will be trading for seven days a week. They include internet and ATM access. The bank itself will be trading for five and a half days a week.” An international clothing retailer is also in talks with mall management about a site near Fresh Choice.

Nelson Appleby owner Wayne Stockdale is hopeful the teams could push on to play out of town competition. “I would like to see the best of Nelson against maybe the best of Ashburton or maybe the mid Canterbury best,” he says. The skill level had also increased from last year with most schools utilising all its teammates better. “I was impressed with the guys’ team building. Even though they might think they’re up against it, it's their willingness to try new things and be a team rather than be individuals, I was impressed by their attitude and all round gamesmanship.” Wayne encouraged other schools such as Garin College and Nelson College for Girls to take part next year. If more schools did join, it was likely to be held in a round robin format before the final.

Nelson girls tested at South Island netball tournament

Nelson College for Girls 10A and 9A competed at the South Island Junior Tournament in Christchurch last week. It was not only the opposition but the elements that the Nelson girls had to contend with. The local girls probably do not appreciate what an outstanding facility they play in each week at Saxton Stadium until they have to play outside – in freezing temperatures, in the rain and at times on sub-standard court surfaces with a heavy, wet ball. Even the management had their work cut out for them as they struggled with the extra burden of keeping bags and gear dry. The 10A team finished 13th last year and with another season together have been progressing well under the guidance of Penny Sue Franklin. Nelson started the tournament in grand style as it recorded resounding wins over Columba 49-14, Ashburton 45-25 and Marian College 41-22. It was a great opportunity to get all the girls on the court on the first day of play. A great all round team performance paved the way for a 28-21 win over Gore High School. The weather was a major factor in the game against St Margarets, where the Christchurch girls handled the conditions better and ran out winners by 29-25. A 22-38 loss to Waimea College put paid to a top four finish, however the Nelson girls bounced back to account for Rangi Ruru 34-25. In the playoff for 5th Nelson were defeated 25-33. Shooter, Abbey Franklin had a standout tournament. She produced commendable statistics and pulled in a number of intercepts through court. Abbey was well supported by Ariana Te
Kawa-Wiremu. Merekara McGuinniety and Mikaela Collier were a formidable defensive unit. They disrupted play and created an abundance of turnover ball. Paige Woodall made a huge contribution in the mid court – she linked well and provided quality ball to her shooters. The 9A team did not have a good start to the tournament when they lost all three games on the first day. Day two was another day as the Nelson girls lifted the bar and recorded convincing wins over Otago Girls 24-18 and Geraldine High 30-11. Going into crossovers Nelson met Nayland College – and although they are sitting behind them in the local competition, they came out on the right side of the ledger to the tune of 32-12. Another excellent team performance saw Nelson account for Rangiora High 31-29 however it went down to Central Southland 25-35 to finish 18th out of 32. Goal attack, Helen Dale was the standout performer as she averaged 86 per cent for the tournament. Helen was everywhere she needed to be and was always available for an option. Emily Mills was a “real trooper” – she played with intensity and with great defence she created a resounding amount of turnover ball. Wing defence, Kiara Tinirau-Philips applied considerable pressure on the outside of the circle. She displayed good distance and was a competent ball carrier. Circle defender, Laura Lowe’s timing was superb and her amazing reach hindered her opposites while she rebounded strongly to deny the second shot.

Cyclists push stop clock during winter series
Nelson cyclist Karen Fulton competing at the Tasman Wheelers Nelson Bays Holden Motor Group Winter Series in Hope on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Around sixty riders competed against each other and the clock on Saturday, during the Tasman Wheelers, Nelson Bays Holden Motor Group Winter Series. The Individual Time Trail saw cyclists cover a distance of approximately 19 kilometres in sunny conditions with a slight tail wind on the first half but a head wind on the home straight. Riders were set off at 30 second intervals with five minutes between grades. ITT's are also referred to as ‘the race of truth’, as winning depends only on each rider's strength and endurance, and not on help provided by team-mates and others riding ahead and creating a slipstream. Despite having to ride back home to pick up his timing transponder prior to starting, the fastest time of 25 minutes and 20 seconds was set by Chris Nicholson averaging almost 45 kilometres per hour, 1 minute and 9 seconds clear of the next fastest rider in A Grade, Warrick Spence. Ann Rigg, competing in the Masters 5 age category, set the fastest time in C Grade of 31 minutes and 12 seconds. Ann is the national time trial champion in her age group. Ethan Batt, a promising Under 15 rider, won D Grade in a time of 31 minutes and 7 seconds, 40 seconds faster than the next rider in the grade. Next weekend’s race, which is not part of the Nelson Bays Motor Group winter series, is a combined Tasman Wheelers/Cycling Nelson event – the Brian Harford mini tour. Brian has been involved with Cycling Nelson for many years and is a Bike NZ commissaire. Full details of this event can be found on www.tasmanwheelers.co.nz.

Origin Dance Crew have been handpicked to represent New Zealand at Hip Hop Unite World Championship in Dordrecht, the Netherlands in October. Final placings at the national competition do not guarantee teams a boarding pass to the Netherlands; a head judge from the competition has the final word. Finals footy awaits Stoke As and women
The Stoke rugby club is gearing up for finals rugby with its top mens and womens sides both posting big wins and earning playoff spots as a result. The women’s side brushed past Marist to win its semi final 62-5 and book its spot in this Saturday’s final against Waimea Old Boys at Jubilee Park. And the division one side were just as impressive, beating Riwaka 60-13, which along with points collected from the bye this weekend is enough to secure it a spot in the semi finals, along with Nelson.
Stoke took some time to find its rhythm for the first 30 minutes at Cooks Reserve with Riwaka dominating possession and territory, although after 15 minutes was rewarded after a Jake Beleski clean break, capitalised by half back Shawn Begg who found Leon Geurin with a well-timed long pass to open the scoring. Riwaka responded with a penalty but the game came briefly alive with the ball back in Stoke’s hands when some excellent passing found Brenton Connell in space. After dispatching some ineffective tackling he
then angled back in field to find the fleet footed Mike Tyler who left behind wouldbe tacklers to score under the bar. Riwaka continued to attack but a resilient Stoke defensive line thwarted its attempts. Stoke went into the break up 18-6. The second half proved to be a different game when the Stoke tighties Ray Packer, Max Glossop and Tyler and the ever present mobile locking duo of Steve Kerr and Ben Douglas imposed a huge impact on the game dominating their opposites, to provide the platform for Stoke to run in a six further tries. Hard running midfielder Chad Lowrie created the first with an excellent pass to find Brenton out wide, who went round under the sticks for the first of his two. Number eight Jared Aberhart pinched one off a loose Riwaka pass, sprinted 30 metres to score, then followed up with a break from the back of the scrum, danced though the defence to cap off a fantastic performance.
Stoke's women's team will play in this weekends final after beating Marist at Greenmeadows on Saturday. Above is Jenna Eathorne making a break and right is Alysha Borlase scoring a try in the left hand corner. Photos: Phillip Rollo.
Shawn Begg toed through a loose ball, to again register his name on the score sheet. While Chad and Brenton rounded off the second half scoring with well-timed runs, receiving the inside ball from Shawn and replacement halfback Cody Christensen respectively. Loose forward Sam Dempster again proved himself as a real asset in the team effort. Stoke has a rest this weekend and will watch to see which of the four teams fighting for two playoff spots it will play in the semis. The Womens’ team booked its place in the final with another superb team performance against Marist at Greenmeadows on Saturday. Stoke had Marist on the ropes early with a penalty courtesy of first fiveeighths Jenna Eathorne. From the following restart, Fern Hoskin spied a gap after fielding the kick herself, pinned her ears back and sprinted clear to dot down under the posts. Eathorne duly converted to give her team a 10-0 lead only five minutes in. Marist appeared shocked and never seemed to recover, as Stoke looked to make the most of its early momentum. Tries to Alesha Borlase and Eathorne herself finished the half off strongly for Stoke after sustained periods inside Marist territory. The theme continued in the second half, although Stoke's defence was tested after the injection of two Japanese players for Marist. Their jinking runs, great ball skills and elusive style were fantastic to watch. Stoke's forwards worked hard to counter this, and forced turnovers allowing them to remain on the front foot. Veteran campaigner Kirsty Johnsen played a sterling 80 minutes, getting around the paddock like some of her more youthful counterparts. Shev Collier and Lucy Higgins shared player of the match honours, both having outstanding games. The final will be played this Saturday from 1.15pm at Jubilee Park.

Inline for medals Nelson College inline hockey team wins bronze at Nationals Andrew Board Nelson College had a goal of bettering its bottom ranking at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Inline Hockey Nationals last week in Auckland – it didn’t expect to beat the eventual champions though. Nelson, competing for the very first time at the tournament, got off to a strong start, losing 2-1 to the defending champion New Plymouth Boys’ High School team. The game was Nelson’s first competitive match of the season and coach Alethea Stove says she was impressed with how quickly her players swung into action. It then whipped the pants off Waihi College, winning 13-1 and giving the young side plenty of confidence for its final pool game against the highly fancied Botany College. Alethea says the match was the highlight of the tournament for her side. “Botany had won all of its pool games so we knew if we beat them we would be top four, and we did. We played really well and beat them 5-4. No one believed us, when we turned up for the semi-final. The opposition coach was like ‘what are you doing here?’ I said ‘we beat Botany’ and he said ‘no you didn’t’, I said ‘yes we did’.”
Nelson’s run finished there though, pushing Kerikeri all the way in the semi-final, but eventually losing at a penalty shoot-out. “Kerikeri was strong, it had a lot of New Zealand players and its goalie is the current NZ goalie. We were up on them, they came back so we went to overtime and it was still a draw, so we went to penalty shoot-out and lost there. It was pretty gutting but we played really well,” says Alethea. Nelson College won the third and fourth playoff against Francis Douglas Memorial College 3-0 to win the bronze medal. Alethea says she is rapt with the performance. “I don’t think anybody thought we were going to be good so they didn’t put too much weight on it, but we came back with a medal. Hopefully it will help grow the sport here. We always amaze ourselves, we only play against each other and we go up and achieve like this.” New Zealand representative Josh Stove was the star for the Nelson team, scoring 17 goals in five matches while goalie Sean McShea played out of his skin, finishing with a save rate of 84.4 per cent, even with the penalty shoot-out. Alethea says the future is exciting for the school. “We have some great players coming through so we want to go back next year and win it.”
