Total available is just $144,700 More than 100 community groups are vying for a slice of the Nelson City Council’s community assistance fund but with a current pool of just $144,700 many will find themselves disappointed. Councillors this afternoon finished hearing from more than 20 community groups which chose to speak in support of their application but they were just a fraction of the 105 applications asking for a total of $571,101. Already the council is in contract to fund $485,300 to various community groups, leaving just $144,700. Applications ranged from $1000 for a new dishwasher to $7350 to run a Maori arts festival with the highest application from House 44 in Stoke which requested $46,000 for staff costs for a Tane group and extension of St Barnabas Church youth programme. The applications were rated by

staff and then put to councillors to decide who gets what. Many of the recommendations included giving just part of the amount requested. Other comments were on the necessity of a request to the community and for how many people it would benefit. A group called Tautoko which supports people with Asperger’s who do not have an intellectual disability requested $25,834, “a large request for a small group of people (up to 10 in Nelson)” was the comment. Others included, “concern around financial sustainability and availability of building in the longer term” for the Kahurangi Employment Trust that operates from the earthquake prone Refinery Art Gallery. And “considering current levels of funding would not support additional assistance” for the

Wedding with a twist

Julia and Brent Lines had a few more turned heads than your usual bride and groom on Saturday, but they were fully expecting it. The Stoke couple had a “medieval themed wedding” with guests getting right into the spirit and dressing as knights, wizards and clergymen. They were expected to get married at Fairfield Park but rain put an end to that and they were wed at the Ocean Lodge, where the reception was held.

Julia says her husband came up with the idea of a medieval-themed wedding and she thought ‘why not?’ “It’s so wacky and so different but a bit of fun so I thought it would be great and we had a really good day.” She says they attracted plenty of car toots while having photos taken in the daffodils on Haven Rd. “It was great, there was no point getting embarrassed we just enjoyed it,” says Julia.

Community groups ask for $500K Brook garden FROM PAGE 1 Nelson School of Music, which requested $40,000 for costs associated with the Nelson Winter Festival. Sport Tasman was also questioned after it applied for $3230 to host a Saxton Seniors Have-a-Go Day. “This is something that should be run regularly and could be assumed to be core business for this organisation.” Those that were favourable and were given an “A” ranking however included Community Work and Training and Support Trust, Nelson Volunteer Coastguard Incorporated, Parent to Parent Nelson, Soroptimist Internationals Nelson, Whenua Iti Trust and Workstar. Nelson Community Christian Night Shelter was given a “B” ranking but attracted favourable comments for its $2000 application “a small request for an organisation carrying out the work for homeless in the community. Operating on minimal budget for this work with high impact”. The popular Stepping Out in Tahuna, put

on by the Tahunanui Community Centre, is “good value for money and has a large buy-in from the community”, say staff. A request for $856 to buy sports equipment and classical guitars by Hira School was given only a “C” ranking because “these may set a precedent for other schools”. The hearings were expected to last all day Monday and Tuesday and mayor Aldo Miccio says they perform a vital need for the community but a proposal from the government may spell the end of community funding by councils. “The government’s made it quite clear that social services are an area where they want us to save funds so the question is will the government take up the slack and fund these things or will nobody be funded. I’m hoping that the government won’t change the statement of local government and leave it as it is.” He says listening to the various community groups talking about the work they do in the community has been enjoyable and “shows how much is done in our community by these groups”.

open again

The Brook Community Gardens will again be hopping with people this Saturday, for the second community gettogether. Gardener Helen Lynch is encouraging people, especially those in the Brook, to come and use the gardens each Saturday. This Saturday there will be a cooking demonstration, live music from the Plinkers and plenty of fresh vegetables for sale. The idea of the get together is to learn how to grow vegetables alongside each other, share ideas about how to cook them and to get to know other people in the community. Helen says this weekend’s event will go ahead rain or shine and she’d love to see a big crowd come along. “There will be plenty going on and I hope people will get involved and enjoy the gardens,” she says. The event starts at 1pm at the Brook Community Gardens this Saturday.

New protester in Stanton’s spot Sinead Ogilvie Just as Nelson City Council breathes a sigh of relief at Lewis Stanton’s departure from Trafalgar St, a new protester has set up his placards in his place. The notorious protesting patch has only just been given up by Lewis, also known as Hone Ma Heke, but it hasn’t taken Nelson man Graeme O’Brien long to set up shop. Graeme has his own gripe with the council regarding his home’s solar savings scheme rate, where he has been told he must pay $600 annually for ten years due to a pre-existing scheme that

he wasn’t told about when he bought the house. He says he doesn’t want to occupy the space solely for his own concerns though and is inviting others to voice their views dubbing the hot spot outside Farmers “speakers corner”. In the meantime he says he is ready to stay for the long haul. “If Hone Ma Heke can do it all through winter, I can do it through summer.” Graeme has made his intentions to protest to the council known, which allegedly told him “you can do whatever you like” and he has had one visit from a security guard so far, as of Monday lunchtime.

Tree could’ve ‘crushed a car’ Sinead Ogilvie A heritage oak tree that once stood in Nelson’s i-site carpark has been brought down after a shock discovery of dangerous cracks. The decision to bring the tree down was made after a crack in the main trunk of the tree was discovered by a Nelmac arborist on Tuesday. Quick action was needed as the nature of

the crack in the central trunk was so serious that it meant the branches were also compromised. Options to preserve the oak were considered, such as bracing the tree or pruning it but the threat of falling branches onto the frequently used i-site carpark underneath and busy Halifax St was too dangerous and “could’ve crushed a car”. The tree is a historical fixture on Halifax St, and it is estimated the tree was planted

in 1914, making the tree just shy of 100 years old. A large team of workers from Nelmac was needed to securely bring the tree down, with traffic being diverted and controlled on Halifax St, the carpark blocked off and also the use of a large crane. While the huge oak will be missed by many, plans are underway to replace the tree. “I do hope to do some planting in its place,” says horticultural supervisor for Nelson City Council, Peter Grundy.

NBus app hits the web Your Community Newspaper

Phillip Rollo

The NBus application designed by two Garin College students is now available for purchase on the Apple App Store. The application, which could soon feature on Android and other smart phone devices, will give NBus customers access to full timetables and the ability to calculate fare costs on their phones. Nelson City Council is the smallest council in New Zealand to have an application that aligns with its transport system. There are similar programmes in Auckland and Wellington. NCC web developer Dan Richardson, who oversaw the project, says he is pleased with 15 year old students Callum McMenamin and Jack Green Hill’s final product. “I think they’re really talented guys and they’ve got a bright future ahead of them,” he says. “They came up with the initial idea and

we worked together to find out the best way of doing it.” Dan says it will benefit customers who are “out and about” but need to know when the next bus is scheduled. Callum and Jack came up with the idea when they were travelling into Nelson city on the NBus regularly for work experience at South Tec and now Lucid Desgin. The pair noted a “confusing” pricing system that is calculated through four separate zones and decided to do something proactive to help others solve the “funny algorithm”, Callum said last month. They both had previous experience making iPhone applications. The two students were sworn to secrecy over the payment received for creating the NBus application but it is believed to be around $1000 – not a bad payday for 60 hours work. The application is free to download and you can find it by searching NBus on the Apple App Store.

Young scientists prepare for fair From mouldy food, to beetroot hair dye, nothing is off limits for the Cawthron Nelson Science and Technology Fair. The famous annual science fair is all about asking questions and keen young scientists finding the answers, with nothing deemed too outrageous for entry. Nelson College for Girls year nine entrant Emma Kynaston said her food packaging project was “disgusting but heaps of fun” as she had to keep mouldy food in a cupboard as part of her project. The young scientists who enter will be hoping to take home prizes for their hard work, with judging taking place on Wednesday the 19th before the fair opens up for public viewing the following day.

Jo Thompson, community educator from the Cawthron Instititue, says the hugely popular fair has been going for 25 years and always attracts a really high standard and a fantastic range of projects. “We are lucky to have such great scientific talent in the region.” There are 50 judges for the entries, and they will have a tough job deciding on the winners with the fair attracting over 60 entries, and some major prizes lined up including $6000 worth of cash prizes to go to the entrants. The science fair will be running from 10am till 2pm daily from Thursday September 20 to Saturday 22 at Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village.

“It’s gonna be huge, we’ve had some big nights here so far this year but I think this will be right up there. Anyone who likes great rock music will enjoy it and I know the band is really keen to really announce themselves on the local scene with a great performance so it should be a cracker,” he says. Tony says he’s looking forward to everyone having a great time but they should “of course” drink in moderation.

Sinead Ogilvie Mayor Aldo Miccio made the first hoop of the season for Croquet Nelson’s opening event on Saturday. The opening day held at Nelson Hinemoa club grounds attracted a keen crowd of members who weren’t about to let the rain stop them from hitting the lawns for the day. Members from the region’s three clubs, Riwaka, Richmond and Nelson Hinemoa got together for the event to encourage people to give the game of croquet a go, and to show the public what all the fun is about. The enjoyment of the game for player Marion Prentice is its highly competitive and social angle. She says that while people tend to think croquet is for ‘oldies’ it is a game to be enjoyed at any

age or stage of life. “It’s a game for people of ten years of age, or whatever age. So long as you’re able to walk out there and hold a mallet you can play. It’s very competitive and a lot of fun” Aldo agreed the sport is for everyone and fancied grabbing croquets’ perfect score in future. “Croquet is a great social game, it’s something I can see myself playing. I hope to be scoring a 26 within the next 12 months” Croquet Nelson’s clubs play either Golf croquet which is known to be fast and furious or Association Croquet, a longer version that uses a lot skill and tactic. With nine lawns available for play the Nelson Hinemoa club ground is Nelsons’ premium croquet venue, and the club meets for golf croquet on Sundays and Tuesdays, and association croquet on Saturdays and Wednesdays.

Schools prepare for Shakeout Students at Enner Glynn School are primed and ready for the big national Shakeout at the end of the month, with the earthquake drill already part of their curriculum. Even the school’s newest students, some of whom moved to Nelson with their families after the Christchurch earthquakes, have the drill down pat and principal Isaac Day says they are looking forward the Shakeout. “We do different drills each term and we did the earthquake drill in term one but because it coincides with the Shakeout we’ve been doing the earthquake drills again this term.”

Enner Glynn student Ava Frater, 5, takes cover under a desk as her class practices for the nation-wide Civil Defence Shakeout on September 26. Photo: Andrew Board.

The Shakeout is a nation-wide earthquake drill being promoted by Civil Defence. An estimated 1 million people will take part in the drill on September 26 at 9.26am around the country. Isaac says the school’s 325 students and 40 staff members will take part in the drill and says it’s important for everyone to get involved. “We do have a number of kids who have come to us from Christchurch and there is definitely still some anxiety there so it’s important for us to be involved. I think it’s a great initiative and we are happy to be a part of it.”

Habitat gets into ISE AND SHINE READY FOR R renovations Habitat for Humanity is well known in Nelson for its work with new houses but the local branch is extending its reach and hoping to catch a new wave sweeping the movement and the country – renovations. For several years Habitat for Humanity in other centres around New Zealand has been promoting a new service called A Brush with Kindness and Nelson’s chairman Rob Silcock says it’s about time Nelson caught up. “We didn’t jump on it straight away because we were a bit sceptical about it but it’s taken off big time around the country and it’s another way we can help people.” The scheme isn’t a “freebie” says Rob, but does give people the opportunity to get upgrades on their house with the help of a well-respected organisation. “What we’re doing is trying to target people who don’t know where to go or who to get into help and for $20,000 or less we can bring it up to a habitable standard and that is one of our mottos, that everyone deserves a reasonable home.” Once the job – from landscaping, to a new bathroom, to replacing rotten weatherboards, to installing insulation – is complete, Habitat will then work with the home owner to go to their bank and refinance their mortgage with the added value of the house taken into account and use that money to pay Habitat back for the cost of the work. Rob says he is keen to hear from Nelson homeowners who may need some work done but are unsure where to turn or where they will get the money from, but is keen to make sure people realise it is not done for free. “We will get in there and help out and let people know if their job is viable or not because we do have a $20,000 limit but we’re looking forward to getting stuck into it.” Anyone keen to find out more can call 545 0050 or email nelsonchair@habitat.org.nz.

Boarders hit slopes of Mapua If you can’t bring the people to the snow, you just bring the snow to the people. The Playhouse Café in Mapua held its second Jib Jam snowboarding competition on Friday with an estimated crowd of 90 spectators warming to the wintry event. Seven of the region’s top snowboarders had an hour freestyle period to thrill the judges on the purpose-built rail constructed by Cheapskates Nelson. Reuben Kerr and Ben GodwinMathieson tied for first place, and Josh Godwin finished runner up. Playhouse owner Nic Roland is a “ski-

er-snowboarder from way back” and came up with the idea for the event when he first took ownership of the site. “I thought we had quite a bit of space and that we should put on a snowboarding event like in Queenstown,” he says. “So we just did it.” He was impressed with the talent on display. “Some of them are really, really good. I don’t think any of them are over 20 years old so they’re really good for their age.” One tonne of crushed ice was donated by Sealords for the event while Placemakers donated material for the three metre drop ramp.

Cawthron attracts oz expert Cawthron is delighted to have award winning academic Dr Deborah Pritchard deliver this years’ Thomas Cawthron Memorial Lecture says lecture organiser Judene Edgar. Dr Pritchard was recently awarded the Australian Water Association Industry Woman of the Year Award to honour her sustained passion and continued commitment to the water industry, and demonstrated outstanding leadership and influence in the water sector. Dr Pritchard is an academic at Curtin University, Western Australia with extensive experience in teaching and research in the fields of environment and agricultural industries. Her focus on the safe use of waste products for their nutrient value in food production, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, has resulted in many field experiments throughout Australia and recently in Africa. The findings of these projects have improved the agricultural land application of various waste products, including biosolids, municipal waste and animal manure; specifically related to nutrient recycling, heavy metals and pathogens. Her research has led to the development of national guidelines for biosolids use and to the prevention of nutrient pollution in water catchments. The lecture will assess the scientific rationale behind the recycling of nutrients in land applied biosolids (treated sewage sludge). The production of faeces by humans is an age old activity; the average lifetime production of faeces is about 4.0 tonnes. This ubiquitous production, combined with increasing population and increasing global food requirement has resulted in a drive to divert from landfill, prevent water and land pollution and better reuse the nutrient and beneficial properties of nutrients and organic matter for soil remediation and plant production. The lecture will highlight recent trends and developments relating to the land application of biosolids to ensure that the 4.0 tonnes of faeces that we each collectively produce is put to good use. The 69th Thomas Cawthron Memorial Lecture is to be held at the Nelson School of Music, Friday September 21 at 7.30pm. Admission is free but a complimentary ticket is required. Tickets can be obtained from Cawthron Institute at lecture@cawthron.org.nz or ph. 548 2319.

Intermediate band wins Bandquest Drivers ignore Noise Control took control of this year’s Bandquest competition at the Theatre Royal on Saturday night, winning the heat and earning a place in the national final. Young bands from Nelson played off in Rockshop Bandquest, a live music competition for primary and intermediate school students. Founder and director Glenn Common says the contest is the ‘younger sibling’ of Smokefreerockquest, and was launched last year at the request of teachers who wanted a platform for their students to show off their musical skills. “There’s a lot more happening at this age level now, thanks partly to the accessibility and affordability of musical instruments,” says Glenn. Noise Control of Nelson Intermediate won $400 from NZ Rockshops with Kings & Queens of Broadgreen Intermediate finishing second and Living Like Clockwork of Nelson Girls’ Preparatory finishing third. The national final will be held via the website bandquest.co.nz where video footage from the regionals will be posted on September 27, with the results announced later that day. More info at bandquest.co.nz.

Nelson police say they are disappointed that only two out of 100 drivers complied with a speed law around school buses in Stoke and Tahunanui last week. Police, in partnership with the road safety coordinators from Tasman and Nelson councils, are conducting a campaign to improve driver behaviour around school buses. On Tuesday last week police parked a school bus on Main Rd Stoke, Tahunanui and Richmond, with the distinctive yellow School Bus signs displayed. They then monitored passing traffic, stopping and talking with any drivers who exceeded the 20kmh speed limit. Constable Carol Heiford said police were surprised and disappointed with the results. “In 100 cars, only two drivers complied with the legal speed to pass a stopped school bus. When spoken to, only about 20 per cent knew they should have slowed to 20kmh,” she says. Most drivers spoken to thought the legal speed was 40kmh and had no idea that the 20kmh speed applied to traffic on both sides of the road. “When we stopped people we asked if they had seen the school bus and many hadn’t even noticed that they had driven past a bus, let alone slowed down for it.” Carol says young school children were often oblivious to the dangers they faced around traffic, they are unpredictable and the risk of them making a poor decision and being hit by a vehicle was one drivers needed to be aware of. “Speed clearly makes a significant difference to the outcome. That’s why the law is set at 20kmh for school buses.” Police will be out again this week with their school bus in an effort to get the message across to drivers.

Fashion Island is the place to come and enjoy a coffee, a full meal or a snack. Did you know that Morrison Street Cafe’s most popular time is breakfast? But having said that their baking selection for morning tea with an Atomic flat white or long black is divine! The selection from the lunch menu is a fantastic combination for those wanting light bites or platters to a beautiful meal. This is a café where the atmosphere is fantastic and vibrant all day long. Winners of the Regional Best Café Award in 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011 and runners-up in 2008, you can understand why our café is a place where the chefs, baristas and front of house staff want nothing more than to give you the very best of what they offer – delicious food and exquisite coffee. Even for those with food allergies and sensitivities they have a good range of choices too. Art exhibitions are hung on the walls for viewing and purchasing, and also spend some time talking to the staff about the history of the café. It’s worth a chat. So come and enjoy a coffee, a meal or a snack and have a fabulous week. I look forward to seeing you at our Fashion Island.

NZ's last Battle of Britain hero Your Community Newspaper

Andrew Board

When thousands of people from around New Zealand gather for Battle of Britain Day this Saturday there will be only one man who will be able to tell a first-hand account of the famous conflict, Nelson’s Alan Garwith. Alan, now 96 and living in Oakwoods Retirement Village, is the last New Zealander alive who fought in the battle and says looking back he is proud to have been a part of history. The Battle of Britain – fought over August and September in 1940 – has been heralded as one of the most important battles during World War Two. It claimed thousands of lives and was the first time Hitler’s advance had been halted. Each year on Battle of Britain day, September 15, people gather for a commemoration service for it and the Pacific battles during the war. In Nelson, the event will be held at the Suburban Club from 11am. One hundred and twenty seven New Zealanders were involved in the Battle, most famously Air Vice Marshall Keith Park, who was in command of 11 Group, defending the south east of England from German attacks. Another Nelson pilot, Squadron Leader James Hayter DFC, also had a memorable war, ending it with 11 victories in the skies. But the former Nelson College student also enjoyed a good time. One day when his plane was attacked and set on fire, he bailed out and landed in the garden of a house where a cocktail party was taking place. Naturally he was invited to join the party and being renowned for enjoying a good time the pilot did not need to be asked twice. Alan Garwith started his war after heading to Scotland for training a year before its outbreak. He was working as a law clerk in Wellington before that and hated it. So when he saw an advert in the Dominion newspaper he said to his friend and fellow law clerk "let's go". The pair of them did and after initial training in Scotland Alan was posted to the No 23 Squadron in southern England. He flew night missions to France and around Eng-

The closest he came to being shot down was in France when search lights and anti-aircraft guns were fired at him. He dodged them and made it home safely. "I was able to just stay out of their range until they ran out of ammunition, then I could take off before they were able to reload," he says. He says it was frightening work and as a result his nerves were shot by the end of the battle and he had to ask for medical leave to recover. In April 1944 he became Senior RAF Liaison Officer at the US 9th Air Defense Command

in Britain, having previously worked on plans for the invasion of Europe. He crossed to France on June 26 1944, spent six weeks in the beach-head area and then remained with the Americans until December. He received the USA Bronze Star for his service in 1944. Alan returned to New Zealand and became a lawyer. He retired with his wife to Nelson in the mid-1980s and lived in Monaco for several years before moving to Richmond two years ago. Anyone wishing to attend this Saturday's service at the Nelson Suburban Club is more than welcome.

Youth service launched A new youth service has been launched, aimed at giving school leavers a helping hand. Tasman-Nelson Youth Services will help 16 and 17 year olds discover their strengths and options so that they can decide on their next step, whether it’s into training, work or further education. The service will continue to support the young people as they progress through various training/education options and until they are over 18 years of age. The Tasman-Nelson Youth Service headquarters are at Waimea College in Richmond but manager Pip Berkett says they aim to make their service easily accessible to young people by setting up another base in Nelson City as well as taking it into other secondary schools. Pip’s passion for helping young school leavers plan good pathways for their future started back in the 1990s when she pioneered the first Youth Transitions programme in New Zealand and she is picky when it comes to having the right people on the coaching team. “To work with young people you’ve got to have a spark, enthusiasm and energy to be able to make a difference for them. Our team of youth coaches have definitely got these qualities,” she says. Pip says there are many school leavers who are uncertain about what to do when school ends, especially during the currently difficult economic times which are marked by a scarcity of jobs for young people with lower skill levels. “Not having clear pathways can be discouraging so our job is to boost their confidence and

Gr wing Things

With Robyn Hollis

Welcome to spring - and should I say it has arrived with a splash!! If our water table in Nelson gets any higher we will be able to experiment with rice growing..... I guess it would make a change. However, we mustn’t grumble and how can you keep from smiling when everywhere you look in folks' gardens and in our lovely parks and reserves things are in bloom. A handful of bone meal on planting will ensure a good start. • Put plant supports in for summer perennials as you see them come through the ground. • Spring flowering bulbs will benefit from a feed when the flowers have faded but do not be tempted to cut them back for at least a month. • You can still lift and divide and clumps of perennials that are overcrowded • Divide herb clumps and shake out the roots then take the healthiest clumps and replant now. It was written by Mary Cresswell and is entitled “SPRING SONG” Hey nonny nonny, the spring breeze is bonny A season of growth is in store. My seedlings in flats got dug up by cats So I’ll have to go out and get more. Hey nonny ninny, the noises are tinny As bicycles blow down the street. The southerly gale goes straight up my tail; My granny’s been bowled off her feet. Hey nonny noany, what a load of baloney To talk about warm days ahead! College netballers take hard road to title Nelson College for Girls A definitely took the long road on the way to the Grade 1 championship. The college team had played eight games in four days at the South Island Secondary Schools Tournament in Dunedin, travelled home on Friday only to re-gather their focus for the semi-final at 9am on Saturday against Jacks Drainmax. Nelson College had been “mentally toughened” at tournament as they had had a number of close encounters against some talented opposition. Jacks made the better start and was 10-7 up at the first break, however the blue team found its rhythm and took the second period 108. Shooters Madi Billens and Shevaun Collier settled into their work load with quality ball from Ruth Swaney and Whitney Orange. With one in arrears, Nelson coach, Kathryn Orange asked her charges to tighten their defence and they followed her instructions to the letter. Whitney moved to wing defence which helped to slow the ball down to Jacks shooters. Nelson took the third quarter 9-4 while Jacks finished strongly to take the final quarter 11-9 to level the game at 33 all. The “Golden Goal” rule is applied when the score is tied – play continues until one team has a two goal lead. And as heartbreaking as it was for Jacks, it was Nelson College who came out on the right side of the ledger 35-33. Jacks manager, Tania Ferris said her girls left everything out there on the court with an enor-

mous team effort. She did praise the efforts of goal keep, Donna Davison who pulled out crucial intercepts towards the end of the game. Goal attack, Kim Starnes played her usual solid game – she controlled the attack end while shouldering a huge workload while Natasha Tucker was the dominant shooter. Nelson College was totally focussed when it took the court for the final against the talented Waimea College 10A. Nelson had been defeated by the younger team last week and was determined to turn the tables in the one that counted. Waimea appeared a little flat and did not have the usual punch through court. And once the ball did reach the shooters they did not have their usual success rate. Nelson won the first three quarters 7-3, 7-5, 7-5 however Waimea left its best until last when it won the final period 6-5. It was all in vain as Nelson claimed the title 26-19. Nelson shooters Madi Billens and Shevaun Collier had excellent statistics and along with Rosa Edwards in the final quarter missed only three goals between them for the entire game. Centre Ruth Swaney pulled in three exceptional intercepts and delivered an abundance of quality, stress free ball to her shooters. Circle defenders Paige Pointon and Rosa applied considerable pressure to the normally unflappable Waimea shooters. Both were prepared to hunt for any stray pass and they rebounded strongly to deny the second opportunity.

Nic Andrew of the Tasman Titans can't find a way through the Canterbury Bulls defence at Trafalgar Park on Saturday as Tasman went down 26-10 in tough conditions. Tasman scored two tries to centre Callum Smith with Hayden Smith kicking one conversion. The Titans will now travel to Invercargill this week to take on Southland in the next round of the South Island competition. Photo: Andrew Board.

Local lad wins national title Phillip Rollo The last time the New Zealand Secondary School Lotto Premier Boys Football Championship final was held in Nelson, Fox Slotemaker was watching from the sidelines – this year he was not only playing it, but lifting the trophy with his Mount Albert Grammar School teammates afterwards. The 16 year old former Waimea College and Nelson Suburbs football player made the shift to Auckland at the beginning of 2012 to further his playing career. The Mount Albert Grammar School first XI is coached by former All White coach Kevin Fallon, the father of current All White Rory Fallon. Kevin was assistant coach when the All Whites qualified for the 1982 FIFA World Cup and also held the reins when Nelson United competed in the national league. He even played for Nelson United when the side won the 1977 Chatham Cup. Fox’s father, John Slotemaker, played under Kevin during his time in Nelson and it was those connections that led him to Auckland. “My dad respects Kevin a lot and he thought it would be the best school to send me to,” says Fox, who is originally from Appleby. Fox was a regular fixture at right back for MAGS during its national secondary school campaign and recalls watching in awe when he saw the side play here three years ago. “Last time it was in Nelson I was watching the final. It was Mt Albert versus someone else and I always wanted to play for Kevin and play for the school. Auckland has the best quality and it was proven at nationals with six of the top eight being from Auckland.” And there was no one better than Mt Albert Grammar with the side claiming a 2-0 win over rivals Auckland Grammar School in the final at Saxton Field on Friday. Captain Jonathan Quinn scored a goal in each half to seal the victory. “We were always quite confident that we would finish at least in the top four and we had a good chance of winning it. It was amazing and definitely a career highlight. I had a few friends there and I knew a lot of the people on the sideline from Nelson.” In Auckland, Fox trains at least once a day with Mt Albert Grammar. He highlights the sport’s importance as part of the school’s culture. He has another year left at Mt Albert Grammar but his first assignments will be the semi finals of the regional knock out cup this weekend before continuing to push his claims for the New Zealand Under-17 side. Fox is involved in national training centres around the country alongside Nelson football players Cory Brown and Ross McPhie – all three are looking to secure a spot in the side for the next FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

The men's and women's Nelson representative football sides that took on Marlborough in Blenheim on Sunday for the Harris Cup. The women's team lost 5-1, conceding three goals in the final ten minutes and the men's team lost on penalties after having a player sent off for hand ball early in the second half. Next year the cup will be played in Nelson. Photo: Sarah Board.

Keeping you in touch

• Four containerships including one at 225m LOA, a navy ship, the tanker, a log ship and fifteen fishing vessel movements around the port kept us busy last week. • The Swing moorings: Did you know they are all privately owned? I thought it might be timely to put a reminder out that the swing moorings in the harbour and at Monaco are all privately owned. • Each swing mooring must have been approved under the Resource Management Act, each should identify the owner and the owner's contact details. • The harbour master's staff will keep an eye on the moorings this summer however it is not our role to determine whether or not you have permission to be on a mooring. It is part of our role to ensure that the vessel on a mooring is the right size for that mooring. If the owner of a mooring contacts us about a vessel on a mooring without permission we will try to find the owner of the vessel. If we cannot do so, we may remove and impound the vessel until reparation for our time and efforts is received. • What does this mean? If it doesn’t belong to you and you don’t have permission to be there – don’t be there. • Last week we had cause to speak to several boat owners about their speed in the marina and on the way to and from the boat ramp. We know that some vessels can be more difficult to control at three knots, we also know what types of vessels they are. • The golden rule is GO SLOW. A recent discussion with Maritime New Zealand has confirmed that they are willing to assist in prosecuting the errant speedsters due to the danger they cause. The police may also get involved with a charge of “using a vessel in a manner as to cause danger or injury to others”. • SLOW DOWN and give kayakers, rowers and others plenty of room. • All vessels should keep to the right hand side of the channels – rowers and kayakers included – this will avoid the close calls we are having today. If in doubt – don’t go out

Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Local people with local knowledge Founded in 1996 by the McKeown family, Trends Kitchens takes pride in bringing quality kitchens and joinery to South Island homes. Unlike franchise owned companies with a limited product range, Trends Kitchens can provide you a custom made kitchen produced by our own certified tradesmen, in our own factory. As the demand for this style of designer kitchen service spread around the South Island, so have Trends Kitchens showrooms and branches. Not long after we opened a branch in Nelson, we found people were coming all the way from Blenheim to see us. We were happy to create a site to accommodate our Blenheim clients, and our Renwick showroom was born. Today, you can walk into a Trends Kitchens showroom in Nelson, Blenheim, Cromwell or Christchurch, and meet with a local designer who can offer you a free measure and quote for the perfect kitchen to accompany your new home or renovation.

When you confirm your purchase with Trends Kitchens, you’re eligible for a no obligation interior design consultation from the team at ColourPlus, to compliment your new kitchen. Ask our friendly staff for details.
