Nelson’s superyacht industry set to boom Andrew Board Nelson is primed to be the latest must see destination for the rich and famous, creating a new million dollar industry for the region. Today, a multi-million dollar superyacht is set to sail into Nelson Haven, the fifth this summer and with each spending around $30,000 in the region, it is having positive spinoffs for the local economy and three local businessmen say that is just the start to a new luxury tourism market in the region. John Baudier, Haden McCrorie and Dave Pinker started Yacht Services NZ last November, which, among other things, specialises in servicing superyachts. They say the number of extremely wealthy tourists coming to the region is set to explode and it could be worth millions to the local economy. The trio have in fact been so successful in getting superyachts to Nelson that Port Nelson is considering a reshuffle of the marina to accommodate them all and Nelson Tasman Tourism is working with them to help bring more to the region. Haden, who grew up in Richmond, worked on a superyacht for eight years and his knowledge of what is needed by crew is such that he can tailor an entire visit for overseas guests. In the past few months he has worked with chefs to arrange gourmet food delivery, arranged hanger space for private jets at Nelson airport and even planned wine tours and accommodation for the guests. John admits they have been busier than they thought, thanks in part to a positive response they have received from agencies in Auckland who are now sending clients to Nelson and Marlborough. “This

Photo: Andrew Board. year there are as many superyachts in New Zealand as there were during the America’s Cup in 2003, and next year we know there is going to be more.” John and Haden refused to say if anyone famous had visited Nelson this summer, as privacy is a cornerstone to their success, but John did manage to tease. “They may not be household names but if you read the Wall Street Journal you may have heard of some of them. Some guests we had looked after had their own Gulfstream G550 here in Nelson, go look up how much they are
worth and you will have some idea of the money they have.” A Gulfstream G550 jet airplane is worth around US$50million according to the manufactures website. Nelson’s key advantage is Haden, says John. “The superyacht industry is pretty small and often it’s the crew that make decisions about where they are going and they talk with each other. They know Haden, or know of him, and when he says ‘why don’t you come down here’ they trust him. And they haven’t been let down, every single

super yacht we’ve had here loved it.” The majority of the superyachts are owned by wealthy Americans, Europeans and Australians. Harbour master Dave Duncan says the arrival of multiple superyachts to Nelson is exciting for the region. “This is something new and something that will be of massive benefit to Nelson financially so we are working hard to make that easier for them.”

On top of the superyachts, another five adventure yachts have come to Nelson because of marketing by John, Haden and Dave. “Not all of them used us but they all spend time in Nelson, bought groceries, bought fuel and used local businesses,” says John. They say the season will start earlier this year with the Rugby World Cup in September. John says support from the region has been great. “We’ve had a great working
relationship with the port and the airport. We are working with local businesses in hospitality, painters, upholsters, rental car places and a lot of other businesses that will benefit from this new industry,” says John. But Haden says it is not just the rich yacht owners that spend up large. Crew, at sea for months at a time, often have a week off once the guests leave, meaning they also want to explore the region and they don’t mind spending. “You can’t spend your money at sea so when they land somewhere like Nelson, they go pretty hard.”

School making a racquet for world record Hampden Street School will be making a racket this Friday if they get their names in the Guinness World Record books. The primary school is targeting the world record for the highest participation in bouncing a tennis ball on a tennis racquet for ten seconds. And the record of 383 paritcipants is well within reach according to teacher Dean Francois. Dean’s class studied a unit called We’re Amazing, at the start of the year, so he could find out what skills each student had. Dean set challenges for the students, including bouncing a ball on a tennis racquet. After days of practicing, Jack Cronin was easily

the best and had the class record of more than 140 bounces. His talent sparked a quick search for genuine records the school could grasp. Parents and ex-students are welcome to enter in the record attempt but they must bring their own racquet and ball and be registered at the school by 1pm. The attempt will be at 1:30pm. The attempt has to be filmed from a wide angle allowing everyone to be seen. Two reputable witnesses must also attend and all persons under 18 years-old needed a signed note along with a specific sized photograph. “If we wanted, we could have got an official world record person to come. But they cost about £4500,” says Dean.

New marina block ready to roll The building of a new facility at Nelson marina will take a further step forward this week. Expressions of interest will be sought to build a block which includes four showers, toilets, laundry, meeting room and a new office for the Marina Supervisor, says Nelson City Council. Designed by local architects Jerram Tocker Barron, expressions of interest for construction open on Wednesday and close on 21 April. It’s expected the new facility on Cross Quay, near the current Supervisor’s office, will be finished by the end of August. The $380,000 building will be funded from the marina account. Co-community services portfolio holder, councillor Pete Rainey says the new facility will be a real asset to the marina, visiting yachties and the group of ‘live aboards’ who call the marina home.

Jeremy Brockie has starred on the worlds biggest stages without nerves getting to him, but on a secluded hill in Golden Bay he was a mess. The Olympic and world cup All White had planned the moment he was going to propose to girlfriend Jess Passmore, then when he pulled out the box, the ring was missing. Fortunatley Jess was facing the other way and Jeremy was able to quickly snap it shut before she saw. “I was just thinking, ‘oh god, I hope it’s in my pocket, I hope it’s in my pocket’.” It was, and second time around Jeremy was able to bend down on his knee and extend the ring. Jess says she burst into tears. “I didn’t actually hear him, but I said of course. I was shaking and crying, I was so happy.” Jeremy, the former Nayland College footballer, is back in Nelson for a month during his offseason from his A-League football club the Newcastle Jets. The pair met in Townsville, Jess’ home town, when Jeremy was playing for the North Queensland Fury. This trip to Nelson is Jess’ first since they began seeing each other 18 months ago. Jeremy says he started thinking of how he was going to propose while in China with the All Whites and settled on horse treking in Golden Bay. He did it during a break on the trek, overlooking the bay. They say they are still weighing up where the wedding will be next year but Townsville and Nelson are the two options.

TDC slams plan for performing arts centre Order Now! It hasn’t been formerly asked to contribute to a performing arts centre, but Tasman District Council has left no doubt of what its answer would be if it was – hell no. The Nelson City Council currently has plans for a $58 million performing arts centre at Rutherford Park in its draft annual plan, now out for public submission. In the plan there is a paragraph that says it will seek TDC help if it gets the go ahead. But TDC poured cold water on that idea before its Nelson counterparts could even ask the question. “The need for the performing arts centre is still based on skimpy and outdated market research. The total capital budget is based on crude esti-
mates that cannot be substantiated by design drawings or quality surveyor’s estimates, as none appear to exist. The total operating losses could be in the region of $5 million per annum,” wrote TDC chief Paul Wylie in a report to councilors. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says a performing arts centre would have financial benefits for the city but he wanted to wait for the submission process to finish before going any further with it. Paul says the business case for the centre is now worse than when TDC rejected supporting a theatre two years ago. Submissions close on the performing arts centre and the rest of the NCC draft annual plan on April 29.

The CACTUS Longest Day is about hard work, determination and endurance – but organiser Vicky Carnegie doesn’t mind seeing a few smiles as well. Twenty two high school students completed the five hour challenge, dubbed the longest day. It is the culmination of CACTUS, an eight week military-based physical training program for youth in Nelson. Students meet before 6am, three days a week for training sessions that improve physical fitness, leadership, teamwork and motivation. It is run with support from Nelson police, Nelson City Council, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the New Hub. The Nelson Cadet Unit, Nelson fire service, Riverside pool and MiGym also helped out during the programme. During the longest day students from Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls, Nayland College and Garin College had to carry logs all over Nelson, run up and down the church steps, compete a course at the fire station and run up the Centre of New Zealand amongst other activities. All the students were presented completion certificates by mayor Aldo Miccio, police district commander Gary Neneh Martin, of Nelson College for Girls, runs down the Knowles and police area comChurch steps as part of the Longest Day. Hundreds sail into Museum for last look
More than a hundred people have taken the opportunity to get a free look at the Nelson Provincial Museum’s exhibition before it closes for good. Last week the museum launched a voucher in Nelson Weekly that allowed people to visit Port Nelson Haven Ahoy! for free before it gets set to close next week. Another voucher is also printed in this week’s edition only, on page 21. Museum chief executive Peter Millward says he was “astonished” with the response to the voucher. “I am delighted, it has been a very popular exhibition and I’m glad people are pouring in to see it before it closes.” More than 13,500 people have been through the exhibition since it opened last October. It will close on April 17. Peter says the last week is a great opportunity to see how the first settlers to Nelson travelled here from England in the 1840’s. “We have a very long and proud history and I urge every Nelsonian who hasn’t yet seen the exhibition to come along and have a look.” Close to two-thirds of all primary school children in Nelson and Tasman have visited it says Peter. Shaved heads raises $2500 for charity Not all the residents of Kensington Court Retirement Village thought the seven staff members who decided to shave their hair for cancer looked good after it. But they all admitted they were brave. Manager Vanessa Kingsbury says she decided several weeks ago to shave her head in an effort to raise money for Shave for a Cure, a charity that encourages people to lose their locks for the cause. When she arrived at work to tell her staff she says she was surprised “but proud” that another six put their hands up to also go bald. Since then the group has raised around $2500, more than they anticipated. More than 3300 people have shaved their hair off in New Zealand, raising close to $500,000. The group shaving was done last Friday at Kensington Court to the delight of many of the residents. Vanessa was the first to have her hair shaved off and promptly walked around the room with residents keen to feel the freshly shaved head. Around the region dozens of the other people shaved their hair CUT FOR CANCER: Staff at Kensington Court Retirement Village who had their heads shaved as a off, from nurses at Nelson hospifundraiser for the Cancer Society. New chapter for Male Voice Choir
A male voice choir is one of the greatest sounds says conductor Andrea Hamilton, but she admits to being biased, she is Welsh. The sound of the male voice choir has been made famous by the Welsh and Andrea says that by her high standards the Nelson Male Voice Choir is in the best shape it has been for some time, with 34 singers making a fantastic sound. Member Ernie Tarling says since Andrea started conducting again the choir has improved and with former conductor Pauline Boyd still in the mix it has a strong team. “We are
so happy to have Andrea back and the choir is sounding really good, but with male voice choirs the more singers the better the sound and we are trying to get a few more people to help make our sound even better.” The group is especially looking for younger members and Andrea says a formal singing background is not required. “No matter what your voice is we can find a place for you and we can also help singers improve.” The choir practises each Monday evening in the Nelson School of Music. For more information call Ernie on 548 7291.

Broadgreen House will be the place to be on the weeks surrounding the royal wedding, with 100 years of wedding dresses on display in Wedded Bliss. Wedded Bliss runs from April 18 to May 15 and is intended to celebrate 100 years of Victorian and vintage wedding gowns, the earliest dating back to 1850. Other traditions from
past weddings, including a chimney sweep, which was good luck to see before the important day, will also be on display along with royal memorabilia. During the dates, the exhibition is open from 10:30am to 4:30pm. Adults $6, senior citizens $5 and children $2. On April 29, the day of the royal wedding, anyone married on April 29, in
any year, is invited to a high tea in the convervatory. There are limited bookings. To RSVP call 5470403 by Apirl 25. Committee member Diane Ramsay says the exhibition is a chance for anyone who has been, or is planning on getting married, to come check out gowns of yesteryear.

The 17 year-old performing arts student is leading the race with the most views on YouTube in a Hitachi heat pump competition, where the winner will land a cool $10,000. But he hasn’t blown away the competition yet, he’s a long way from the finish line and is hoping the Nelson community can get behind him and watch the video as many times as they can. The criteria for the clip included an already made song that you could add your own interpretation and spice to and a ukulele must feature with a particular chord, the rest was all in Doug’s control. So how did Doug come across the heat-pump comp? “It’s a small obsession of mine. I spend a lot of my time going through magazines and picking out heat pumps. We have a heat pump at home. It’s not Hitachi. I wish it was. I really do,” jokes Doug. “A teacher at Soundstage, he approached me with the poster. I didn’t think much of it at first. I thought, everything is worth a go.” Doug has been trying to spread the SONG STAR: Doug Colling is currently leading a national word via social networking website music video competition. Jonny Benbow, manager of Nayland Scaffold and Crane, with some of the scaffolding that will be erected around Trafalgar Park during the Rugby World Cup. Nayland Scaffold and Crane won the contract to supply a range of services and temporary buildings, worth $250,000. Nelson City Council awarded the tender to the company late last year and say they were “thrilled” it went to a local firm. Jonny and his team will control the traffic management plan, a marquee for media, temporary ticket booths, a major generator that will light the whole stadium if the power goes out and a few other projects. Jonny says he was happy to get the contract as he is expecting it to be a reasonably quiet time of year for his team. “It’s also exciting being involved in such a massive event for Nelson,” he says. and very easy to work with,” says Robert. There were more stalls this year, with a wide variety on show for everyone who went along. “We were very pleased with the quality of the displays. Despite Nelson being one of the smaller places we take the Women’s Lifestyle Expo, Nelson always provides us with a great turnout and it’s one of the friendliest places we get to. The exhibitors are great too,” says Robert.
Nelson women sure know how to shop. The Women’s Lifestyle Expo was successfully held at the Trafalgar Centre over the weekend with organisers saying more people turned up this year than last year. Managing director Robert Woodhouse says Saturday was certainly busier than Sunday and the event was “a lot more successful than last year”. Robert says it’s too soon to know the number of people who passed through the doors but already he has received great feedback from exhibitors. The weekend’s weather provided the perfect excuse for many Nelson women to get out and do some retail Alana Riley, of Oxygen Skincare, with Shelley Anderson of therapy. “It’s Nelson at the Women’s Lifestyle Expo at the Trafalgar Cena great venue tre. The Harbour Master’s
diary
• Santa Regina for Strait Shipping continued her regular Saturday service from Wellington, four additional Container ships including the regular Pacifica calls, a log ship, the cement ship; a seismic survey vessel was in briefly, eight large fishing vessels and two super yachts led to a busy port. • The Wednesday night yacht racing has ceased until the winter series starts in May. • Kayakers continue to be seen during the mornings and evenings enjoying a leisurely paddle or training hard for future events. • Many recreational craft went out last Friday for a local fishing competition. • The behaviour of most recreational craft skippers was great and it is pleasing to see the number wearing life jackets as the days and the water temperature cools down. Lost overboard, engine failure, accidental grounding or collision can be one of many reasons a person ends up swimming. Accidents continue to occur around the country so please take your safety seriously. If in doubt – don’t go out

Letters to the editor The Arts fraternity is at it again. Blind support for the $60+ million Arts and Conference Centre proposal with little regard for the economic consequences. They completely disregard those who are struggling to live through these “tough economic times” (quote from mayor Miccio, Annual Plan 2011). Once again the Nelson City Council is proposing major expenditure with little information for the public to make an informed decision on. Where is the business plan/costbenefit analysis? Andrew Talley provided disturbing facts that make the conference centre a reckless venture. Secondly, no civic performance venue in NZ runs at a profit. Private enterprise would never invest
funds into such insolvent ventures so why expect the ratepayers be party to reckless trading? NCC does admit one thing, if these two ventures went ahead, they alone would increase rates by around 17 percent over the next five years. Add inflation and perhaps three percent for all other expenditure annually, and we are facing a 50 percent increase in rates by 2015/16. And that’s only the average. Many will pay substantially more. To try and ram two insolvent “dreams” though this annual plan is criminal. Nelson City Council must get out of the business of competing with its ratepayers. Errol Millar, Nelson.

TUESDAY 12 April 2011
The theme for World Heritage Day is water and Riverside Pool, along with Nelson City Council has jumped in head first to take advantage of that and celebrate the 1927 opening of the Municipal Pool, now Riverside. Heritage Week in Nelson is from April 17 and
Riverside manager Dave McKenzie has put together a display and events to celebrate the pools history. In the past swim carnivals and business house relays were regular events at Riverside, so on Monday April 18 appropriately attired teams and a mix of veterans and newcomers will battle it out for a special heritage trophy. Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio will be on hand to welcome everyone and special guest Amaka Gessler who is a silver and bronze medalist from the 2010 Dehli Commonwealth Games will present the swimming cup to the winners. If you come into the pool dressed in vintage attire you can also get a free swim and there will be heaps of fun activities for the kids from 10-2pm. Swim Magic Holiday Intensive and Stroke Clinics also begin on Monday 18 May and run every day of the holidays except Easter. This is a great way for swimmers to boost their technique over the holidays and spots are still available for week two of the holidays. NEW Show Home
Official Opening
1.00 - 4.00pm Sunday 17 April 8 Daelyn Ave, Richmond
Locals put body and soul into building your perfect home The Fowler Homes show home is all completed and looking great, they are opening its doors to the public this Sunday. Lisa and Andrew Stevenson have been running Fowler Homes for eight years and say they live and breathe the company. The husband and wife team say they can design and build a home for real living. It’s the personal touch that Lisa and Andrew bring to the whole building process that adds to the uniqueness of their business. “What we bring to the market, is that we are owned and run by Lisa and myself and it has been from the very beginning, it has always been a husband and wife team,” says Andrew. “People are still really passionate and focused on that personal touch.” Andrew has been a builder all his life and he built the show home on Daelyn Ave himself. “I came out of the office and physically built the show home. We did that for a number of reasons and one is so that when we’re actually
here selling it I can say I actually built it, I’m a builder not just a salesman.” The couple are thrilled they are able to provide this great point of difference to their clients. “You only deal with us, that’s what a lot of people who have built with us say, that it’s so good because they’re not ringing an office and getting put on to this person or that person, we’re the one stop shop. We’re accountable,” says Lisa. “We have built this with family in mind, we designed the home as we would live. With three children ourselves we concentrated on that, our space, their space, and with our girls wanting to move in, I would say the design matched the brief, our brief ” says Lisa. The whole process has been a lot of fun for the couple, who say that building a home doesn’t need to be stressful. “That’s the thing everyone enjoys when they’ve built with us. People going into it say it’s stressful but we say there is no reason for it to be. We deal with the stress and you enjoy it.”
ALL IN: Lisa and Andrew Stevenson of Fowler Homes live and breathe their business and have been involved in the area for the past eight years. The couple are excited about the official opening of the show home on Daelyn Ave on April 17. Lisa and Andrew say they get a lot of repeat business and are always available if a client has a question.

1.00 - 4.00pm Sunday 17 April 8 Daelyn Ave, Richmond Building a home is a personal experience and Lisa says relationships have been formed with their clients in the past. The couple have attended weddings, birthdays and other celebrations for people they have built homes for. Andrew says building a home from scratch is a big thing in someone’s life. “It’s big financially and it’s a commitment we take very seriously.” All of the Fowler Homes sub contractors and suppliers are fantastic according to Lisa and Andrew. “They’ve been with us for the eight years as well. With most of the people advertising within this feature we’re loyal to them and they’re very loyal to us and they see our clients right. They follow our way and are always available for us and our clients. Between us and our contractors we really do offer a full service, from helping our clients find the right section through to full interior design. I help 90% of our clients with interior design, I have even helped on
move-in day to arrange furniture!” says Lisa. This is all part of the Fowler Homes full service, you won’t have to pay for an interior designer when building the them. Lisa is more than happy to visit clients current homes to see how they live and to view their furnishings to make sure all their favourite pieces can have pride of place in their new home. The builders have also been with Fowler Homes for eight years. “You get quality because we know them and we have a good relationship with them, one of our longest standing builders helped Andrew build the show home.” Lisa says she and Andrew are starting to see clients come back for a second home. “We get lots of repeat business and referrals.” Fowler Homes is a national brand and is respected throughout the country. “People in Nelson ask ‘who are they and what are they?’ We’re not a franchise; we’re a joint venture so we run this. We pass on our buying power through the national brand to our clients,” says Lisa. Both Lisa and Andrew love what they do. “We’re seriously passionate about it, it’s our life really,” says Andrew. “Our girls often say ‘don’t you talk about anything else?’ We have our own purpose and our own jobs so often we do get home and have to collate what we’ve both done during Lisa on their the day with regards to certain

Nelson pool team off to NZ 8-ball champs Ten Nelson teenagers are heading off to the New Zealand Clubs 8-ball Junior Championship this weekend, looking to claim high honours. The tournament is held at City Club 2000 Palmerston North. Brothers Mike and Tim Shanaher, along with Nathan Geddes, are ranked in the top ten in the country and are the biggest hopefuls from the Nelson Suburban Club contingent. Mike and Tim have both competed at the open championship before, which is the next transition from the junior competition. While ages range from 10 years-old to 18 years-old, all competitiors will be facing each other in singles and pairs. Coach Clare Shanaher says the 8-ball tournament is a great opportunity for the younger players to get experience playing at a high level, against older competitiors. There is prize money for the winners. The pool players practice every week at the Nelson Suburban Club and Clare says it’s a sport for all RIGHT ON CUE: Mike Shanaher, Tim Shanaher, David Miles, Braydon Diamond, Xandre Little, Sam Miller, Chey Case- shapes and sizes. “Not all kids are in to running Connor, Brittany Kidd, Clare Shanaher, Nathan Geddes and Braydon Drummond get some last minute practice at the around paddocks kicking balls. Using hands all part of learning French Black ink cartridge refills for just $10 There are many myths to do with using refilled cartridges in your printers’, here at Cartridge World Nelson and Richmond those Myths get BUSTED! One of the most common myths is that ‘Using Refilled Cartridges Voids My Warranty.’ THIS MYTH IS BUSTED!!! The true facts are that The NZ Commerce Act and the Fair Trading Act state that it is illegal for a manufacturer to require the consumer to use a particular brand of supply. The Warranty can only be voided if the cartridge is the PRIMARY cause of the fault. If in the unlikely event that should happen OUR OWN WARRANTY covers the customer. So you can have your cartridges
refilled with the confidence that the cartridges refilled by Cartridge World Nelson or Richmond will not void your warranty. What better opportunity to try refilled cartridges by having your cartridges refilled on a $10 Black Wednesday the 13th of April for Nelson customers or $10 Black Thursday the 14 of April for Richmond customers when redeeming the voucher on this page? Cartridge World Nelson and Richmond are the only retail stores in Nelson and Tasman specialising in refilling and remanufacturing cartridges for your printers, faxes and photocopiers. Learning French has never been easier says tutor Anne Wheeler. It helps to be handy with your hands though. Dozens of Nelson children are now learning to speak French with a new technique called Accelerative Integrated Methods, which uses gesture approach, songs and games to reinforce learning and memorisation. Anne teaches students around Nelson and does so with support of Alliance Francaise de NelsonTasman, an organisation to promote French language and culture. Anne says her students are picking up the language quicker than previously and they have a
lot of fun with it. “We have a good time and the children learn a lot because it is fun and much easier.” Steele Bartlett, 12, has been learning French for several years and says the new system has helped him advance his knowledge. “The signs have really helped me remember words,” he says. Anne also teaches French to adults at Nayland College as part of its adult community education programme. For more information about learning French call Anne on 548 5593 or email anne.wheeler@slingshot.co.nz.

The winner will face off against Richmond Athletic or Marlborough. RUGbY: In a replay of the 2010 division one final, Accessman Stoke will take on Galbraith Group Nelson at Greenmeadows at 3pm this Saturday. The next generation of football superstars are starting to shine with the announcement that four intermediate-aged children have been selected for a national training centre later this month. Attacking midfielder James Peters, 12, along with strikers Roland Hlewceu, 13, Matt Tod-Smith, 12, and Callan Elliot, 11, have been earmarked for the 2015 FIFA under-17 World Cup in Chile. The four boys were selected out of 18 outfield players who trialled at a training on location day in Christchurch earlier this year. The training centre will be held in Oamaru in the school holidays. There, the boys will train, attend lectures and meet specialists from a range of different sectors including flexibility, nutrition and core work. Their technical ability is higher than what All White Jeremy Brockie and under-20 midfielder Jamie Doris’ was at that age, according to Nelson Bays Football regional development officer George Campbell. “I think these boys are even more talented. Their technical ability is probably above what theirs was at that age. Not that that technical ability is the only aspect to football,” says George. “Their game intelligence is well up there and they’re focussed.” If the boys can impress down south, they will then be selected for another training camp, this time, featuring Auckland and Wellington players.
THE NEXT GENERATION: James Peters, 12, Roland Hlewceu, 13, Matt Tod-Smith, 12, and Callan Elliot, 11, speed in to football training at Guppy Park. The four young prodigies have been selected to attend a national training centre later this month. The training centre is for potential 2015 under-17 World Cup hopefuls. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Harry Timms, 8, of Wakapuaka competing in the Nelson Bays Tennis Association 8 and under Grasshoppers Invitational Tournament held at the Tasman Tennis Centre on Friday. Clubs and Coaches from around the region had put forward their best children to compete in this event that takes place twice a year. 2010's runner-up Owen Barnett of the Nelson Lawn Tennis Club made sure he wasn't going to be second again winning the final over fellow club mate Sam Innes-Walker.
Out of the 500 competitors lining up for the Taylors Women’s triathlon on Sundasy a staggering 140 of them were completing in their first ever triathlon, highlighting the events success. The event was held in the Maitai Valley on Sunday and organiser Greg Dykzeul says he was "very happy" with the event. "This race has become almost like a rite of passage for a lot of Nelson women. You don't need to be an athlete to do this race; you just need to have a crack." Pogo Paterson-McAuley won the race after getting the jump on Klaartje Van Schie and Carol Cooper in the run-bike transition. All were at their bike racks close together but a stronger ride from Pogo gave her a comfortable edge entering Riverside Pool for her to complete her four lengths with a 37 second buffer. Van Schie just held on for second. Margaret Oliver won the walk section in both 2009 and 2010 and ended up in front again to "three peat".

Year 6 Future Fern teams will start playing on Saturday May 14. Year 4 and 5 Future Fern teams start after school on Wednesday May 18. Encouraging our youngsters to experience netball is something that Nelson Netball does well with the Future Fern and Fun Fern programmes. Fun Ferns is an open programme offering boys and girls aged 4 to 8 years the opportunity to be involved in netball based skills sessions and fun games that are appropriate to their age levels. Fun Ferns will start on Tuesday May 31 and costs just $3 per session.
Netball players from Senior grades right down to Future and Fun Ferns enjoy netball every week at the Saxton Fields Sports Complex. Trish Lowe has held the position of Development Manager for Nelson Netball Centre for the past nine years and over that time she has assisted, mentored and inspired countless of our youngsters and their coaches. One group of youngsters who have in turn inspired Trish are her ‘babies’, the Future Fern referees. Trish encourages some of our younger netball players to take up umpiring positions and provides them with support and training with a few of them still being active in umpiring games at a higher
level. “Having been in the position for a number of years, I get to see most of those little players who started in Future Ferns progress through the grades and some of them are now competing at Premier level which is awesome,” says Trish. Trish is available to help with training sessions at all levels, providing assistance with skills training and support for coaches. If you are currently coaching a team and would like a bit of assistance, don’t hesitate to call her at the Nelson Netball Centre.

Netball 2011 For those with a slightly less competitive nature who just love to play netball, many mixed social teams also participate in the Thursday night league and Wednesday morning netball. Like all organisations, Nelson Netball has a huge number of people and groups who volunteer behind the scenes to make every season a great one. The groups include the Nelson Netball Coaches Club, which aims to provide all coaches at the centre with development opportunities and running workshops for coaches. If you are interested in becoming involved in coaching, contact Trish. The Bench Officials group provides pathways for those who show interest in becoming a Bench Official. This involves score keeping, time keeping and statistics at local Premier level up to National and International level. The Nelson Netball Umpires Committee actively promotes and develops umpires and anyone interested in umpiring can contact them through Nelson Netball. Players and spectators will be sure to notice the big upgrades that have taken place at the Netball Centre ready for the 2011 season. A massive upgrade of the courts
has taken place and it’s looking pretty awesome with new drainage, resurfaced courts all painted up and ready to go, surrounded by smart new fencing. Last year was the first opportunity for Nelson Netball to utilise the magnificent facilities of the Saxton Stadium, allowing for regular games to be played indoors regardless of the weather outside. Having Saxton Stadium available has proved beneficial to netball fans in our region, allowing us to recently host the Lois Muir Challenge. This tournament, originally planned to be held in Christchurch, brought top quality netballers from across the country to Nelson and the Stadium proved to be a perfect venue. For any information about local netball, visit www.nelsonnetball. co.nz or contact the Nelson Netball Centre on 547 4450 or email Leanne Russ, Administration Manager at admin@nelsonnetball.co.nz A Nelson Netball Intermediate Camp will be held on 26 to 28 April for all Yr 7 and 8 netballers.
