They saved my life Nelson man Steve Taylor was pulled unconscious from the water at Tāhunanui Beach last week. He has no doubt that the people who pulled him from the water that day saved his life. Full story on Pg 3.
Not your average ‘cat lady’ Kate Russell Brenna Coleman is not your typical cat lady. While most cat lovers focus on those that are alive, the 24-yearold Nelson woman has dedicated the last five years to helping those who are not. “I have been driving around Nel-

son, picking up cats that have been hit by cars and have passed away,” Brenna says. “Some have families that are looking for them, some are strays, but all deserve to be taken care of.” Since 2016, she has helped put to rest almost 400 cats in the region. “I try not to keep count, as there are so many. I had four cats in one
day once and that was hard, it almost broke me.” Brenna says it was an unplanned ‘pick-up’ that started her crusade. That was a random Facebook plea from a member of the public who had found a dead cat in a bush which looked like it had been there for several weeks. The post caught Brenna’s eye, sending her
on a mission to retrieve the cat and solve the mystery of who it belonged to. “It turned out to be an elderly woman who had owned the cat for 18 years - she had adopted her from the SPCA as a kitten. She was so grateful, so I knew I had to keep going.” Brenna says her search to find her

own cat, Hunter, who went missing in 2016, also gives her the motivation to keep going. “I don’t want other people to go through what I’m going through. I want to give these cats a chance at getting home so the families can have closure.”

Recently she found a deceased unneutered male, an eight-weekold kitten, and a lactating mother who was feeding her kittens. “She never had a chance, so I now have her kittens with me. I have seen it all - it is disgusting and very sad, a lot of these cats aren’t even recognisable.” Brenna does the work totally unfunded, and entirely from the goodness of her own heart. “It’s hard, but I always have what I need and gas in the car.” In the last six months offers of blankets, towels, gloves, and petrol money have started trickling in. “It’s hard for me to accept that kind of help. I’ve recently realised I can’t do it all on my own.” She says she relies on people contacting her through her Face-

She also has a good relationship with the vets in the region, who will check the deceased cats for microchips. “I am super grateful to them.” Brenna says a microchipping bylaw for cats would help the situation and her goal is to work towards seeing this mandated. “With the last six cats I have picked up only one was microchipped and that microchip was not even registered.” Although she says the work is emotionally, physically, and mentally draining, she has no plans on stopping. “There have been times when I have broken down and cried but I will always give each one a cuddle and a scratch on the head and hope that next time I’ll get a longer break between cats.” Help her cause at www.givealittle.co.nz/ cause/deceased-cats-of-nelson

from page 1 Steve Taylor was lucky to make it to 2022 after a relaxing swim turned into a near-death experience at Tāhunanui Beach. Steve was swimming at the back beach on New Year’s Eve around lunchtime, as he does most days, when he almost drowned. He says he was floating on his back with his head right back, eyes closed, fully relaxed, when a rogue wave filled his mouth with water. Steve has epilepsy and it was thought he may have had a seizure, but he doesn’t believe that was the case. “I always get prior warning before I have a seizure,” he says. “On 31 December, there was nothing.” He says he was simply floating on his back with his mouth above the water. “Before I knew it, I was taking a breath and a big wave came right over the top, it was a windy day and that’s where it got me.” He inhaled water and turned over to try and put his foot

Nelsonians recognised NEWS in New Year’s Honours
Annesbrook Drive resurfacing
Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
After noticing men struggling in retirement, Alan Kissell established a place for them to keep their hands and minds busy. The Waimea Menzshed has been serving the local community for over a decade. In acknowledgement of Alan’s efforts, he was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal in the 2021 New Years Honours List. “I thought it must be a hoax. I was pretty shocked, I certainly didn’t expect anything like that.” Alan says the transition from fulltime work into retirement can be a difficult adjustment to make for many men. “We get conditioned to working eight hours a day and when the guy retires, he is still in that mindset.” He says some men become ‘couch potatoes’ without something to get them up in the morning. “Talking to a lot of the ladies, they are quite happy for them to get away for a bit
too.” The Menzshed offers men an opportunity to continue developing skills into their later years. “It seemed like a really good fit, I was a builder so I can pass those skills onto others and keep them active.” The Menzshed has been involved in several community projects, including making a carriage for the Histrionics troupe and upskilling workers from Vanuatu who became trapped during the Covid-19 pandemic. “Their work dried up, so we took some of them on. They ended up building a shed for Nelson College Rugby.” The Menzshed has built ramps for Nelson Tasman Hospice, planter boxes and seats for various schools and community facilities, and toys and games for play centres and kindergartens. The team also regularly works with intellectually disabled people. “For those guys it is much more than just how to build, we talk about what’s happening in the world and it is very rewarding.” Alan says he is incredibly

to centre stage in the inner city. Cathy has been involved with a range of community organisations in Nelson for 30 years, holding several offices with the Nelson Tasman Justices of the Peace since 2004, including president from 2012 to 2014. She has been a JP since 2005 and was appointed judicial trainer for Nelson Tasman in 2019. Cathy has been regional naval officer for Nelson since 1993, undertaking liaison work for ship visits and organisations such as Nelson City Council, port authorities, RSA and New Zealand Cadet Force Units. She was a key organiser for the Trafalgar bicentenary commemoration event in 2005, involving 10 ships in Nelson Harbour. Others regocnised from the region were Murchison’s Paul Wilkins for services to Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Peter Dunbar Read for services to New Zealand Police and John Ward-Holmes (Ngāti Tama, Te Ātiawa) for services to Māori and conservation.
A section of SH6 Annesbrook Dr will be under night-time stop/go signals this week while resurfacing work takes place. The section of road between Blackwood St and Maire St, will undergo pavement repairs and resurfacing starting Tuesday 11 January through to Saturday 29 January, with stop/go in place between 7pm-7am each night. Waka Kotahi say crews will be on-site installing drainage in the first three days and will be completing resurfacing and line marking from Friday 14 January. They ask temporary speed limits through the site are adhered to as the road surface will be uneven. There will be restricted parking on both sides of Annesbrook Dr between Blackwood St and Maire St until the works are complete. The works are weather dependent and could be postponed at short notice.
National leader to speak in region
National’s new leader will visit the region next week to speak about the major issues New Zealand faces and how his party will take them on. Christopher Luxon will hold a public meeting at the Hope Community Church Hall on Thursday 20 January. West Coast-Tasman-based National list MP, Maureen Pugh, will host the meeting. Maureen says Christopher will talk about his personal journey from being a top manager in corporate New Zealand to entering politics. She says, with less than two years before the next general election, it is a great opportunity for local people to ask questions of National’s new leader. Doors will open at Hope Community Church Hall at 1.30pm on Thursday 20 January to allow time for the required vaccine pass scanning. The meeting is timed to run from 2.30pm until 4pm.

Health company continues growth in Nelson region Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
A global surge in the demand for health products has seen a local company more than double their staff in just one year and also pick up a slew of awards along the way. Alaron may be an unfamiliar name to many Nelsonians, despite the company running locally for nearly 30 years. The contract manufacturer of natural healthcare products, dietary supplements and natural skincare, is a ‘behind the scenes’ company and produces on behalf of brand marketers. In 2021 the company almost doubled in size - employing 130 people in a range of roles. “By the end of the year, we’re looking at having 300 - 320 employees. It’s massive growth,” says head of Alaron HR, Dylan Adams. He credits the growth to a “fierce” increase in the global market for health products due to people taking their health and well-being more seriously in the coronavirus pandemic. “Things just took off.”
Claire Quin and Dylan Adams from Alaron, which has experienced unprecedented growth in the last year and a half. Photo: Kate Russell. The growth has also seen Alaron expand its 12,500 sqm site on Bolt Rd, and general manager Claire Quin says that has come with some challenges. “It’s been a bit of a double edged sword because it has been fantastic to have the growth but at such a complex time it’s been challenging.” Claire says the company is working towards becoming carbon neutral, starting with installing 810 solar panels that they will be able to utilise 100 per cent of the power generated. “It’s the largest solar installation that’s going in the Top of
the South,” she says. In the Natural Health Products NZ Awards, they have won supplier of the year for the three years it’s been running, and the business resilience award this year. They also came 41st in the Deloitte Fast 50 and were the fastest-growing exporter and manufacturer in Christchurch and the upper South Island. Claire says the company is committed to the Nelson region. “We’ve been here since 1993, and we want people to know us and understand us.”

Family loses everything in Lake Rotoroa fire Jenny Nicholson
morning of 4 January. The only thing to survive was their van which someone pushed out of the driveway. Robert and Rebecca Ifopo bought the home just over three years ago. A house fire in the Lake Rotoroa village has left a family of nine with just the clothes on their back and the bikes some had been riding when the blaze broke out. Just six weeks after shifting into their house, the family has lost all their belongings after a fire started on the

William Hastilow’s widow, Marion, outlived him by 30 years. Having been cut out of her father’s will when she eloped, she had little income after her husband died. Her brother-in-law sent her a small remittance three times a year, and

no charge to those who stayed there. Now the generosity of the family is being returned with local communities rallying around and donations being dropped off from Wakefield, Tapawera, Lake Rotoiti and Murchison. “It was good to have a change of clothes,” says Robert. “Rebecca and the children were helping in the wool shed and only had the clothes on their backs.” He says the family are very grateful to the community. “People have been coming with donations and a lot of the
essentials,” he says. Robert is now working as a builder/farmhand and had all his tools in the garage, and has lost those, too. FENZ shift manager Lyn Crosson says they responded at about 10.40am on Tuesday 4 January. Crews from Murchison and Lake Rotoiti were dispatched with help from Tapawera and Richmond dispatched before they arrived. A Nelson command unit was also dispatched. “It was upgraded so quickly because of the distance to travel,” says Lyn.
She says firefighters found the house razed to the ground. Suzzi Lankshear, one of the firefighters who responded to the blaze, has organised donations of food and toiletries. She has had a constant stream of items arriving at her place. “It is a feel-good feeling seeing all the communities coming together.” Suzzi says people who would like to contribute can donate to a Givealittle page that St Arnaud Rural Women have set up at https://givealittle.co.nz/ cause/family-loses-ever ything-in-house-fire

Nelson City Council is proposing a Management Council Controlled Organisation to oversee the future of Nelson Marina. Photo: Supplied.
New governance model proposed for marina Erin Bradnock Reporter
erin@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Nelson City Council is recommending a new management model for the Nelson Marina after a review found that the status quo was not focused enough on commercial opportunities. The model would see a Council Controlled Organisation (CCO) run the marina while the council retained ownership of the asset. A CCO would allow for a company structure accountable to the council. This preferred CCO option was confirmed following a review.
The management of the marina was brought in house on 1 July, 2021, following the termination of the Nelmac management contract. It was determined by the council that “more active management was needed” over the marina. The review found the current governance model, operated through the council, was not commercially-focused and not enough to fulfil the proposed development plans for Nelson Marina under Nelson’s Long-Term Plan. Consultation submissions close midnight on Sunday, 20 February, 2022, and can be made through NCC’s Shape Nelson website.

Local History exploring our
Campbell family history John Cretney Alan Le Grand Campbell did not work after he retired from the British Army. He spent his time maintaining the property and raising a family. He was also a keen dog breeder, with a special interest in white English bull terriers. In 1936 he introduced this breed to New Zealand by importing a pair from Britain for breeding. In 1938, soon after moving to Nelson, he built kennels on the property that can be seen in later photographs. When the war came, Alan was called up for war duty in 1939 and sent to Burnham at two days notice. He trained the first battalion before it departed and was to go overseas with the second battalion.

Planning your job search Here are 4 steps to help you plan your next job search.
1. Reflect Take a moment to stop and reflect upon your career. Consider where you are in your career and, crucially, what role you ultimately aspire to. Once you define your ultimate career goal, you can identify the promotions and skills required to get there. Ask yourself such questions as: • Where do I see myself in ten years’ time? • What job/s will help me bridge the gap to reach my goal? • What have I achieved in my career to date that I’m proud of? • Is my ultimate career goal still the same as it was last time I looked for a job? If not, what’s changed? • What are my strengths and weaknesses? • What skill gaps do I need to overcome to reach my goal?
2. Define your next move Once you have identified your career goal and the steps required to get there, you need to define your immediate next career move. It’s important to look beyond the duties and experience you need
to acquire and consider the bigger picture, such as the culture in which you thrive and the benefits you want. Ask yourself such questions as: • What role represents the next sensible step towards my longterm career goal? • What skills do I need to develop in my next role? • Do I want a job offering room for progression? • Are learning and development opportunities important? • What kind of culture brings out the best in me? • What kind of work environment brings out the best in me? • What salary and benefits am I realistically looking for? Download our Job Search Planner to take control of your job search. Our planner guides you through these stages to focus your job search and lead you to success.
3. Get to work Once you know what your immediate next job should be, it’s time to update your CV and LinkedIn profile. This includes creating an eyecatching professional summary that positions you as a suitable candidate for the job. It should focus on what you can offer an employer, not what you want out of your next job. Ultimately, both your CV and LinkedIn profile should contain enough evidence to demonstrate the relevancy of your previous experience and successes so that a
hiring manager or recruiter cannot overlook you.
4. Plan your week It’s important to break your job search down into small actionable tasks. Otherwise, you may feel overwhelmed and give up before you even start. You can do this by identifying weekly goals and then breaking them down into daily tasks so that you keep your job search on track. Examples of such manageable

tasks include: • Identify at least five prospective employers; • Find and apply to at least one job opening; • Schedule a meeting with a recruiting expert; • Share with your recruiter what you want in your next job; • Network with existing connections and build your
11
online connections; • Sharpen your interviewing skills – both for in-person and video interviews Once you’ve created your plan, stick to it! Refer to it regularly, update your weekly planner each Monday and allocate some time every day to spend on your job search.

In 2022, parents and caregivers will be able to get their 5 to 11-year-olds immunised against COVID-19 Some tamariki get very ill from catching COVID-19 and immunisation is one of the best ways to protect them.
Safety of the COVID-19 vaccine
Immunisation is an important way we keep tamariki safe, like being sun smart or wearing a seatbelt.
The child (paediatric) Pfizer vaccine has gone through the same rigorous approval process as other routine childhood immunisations. No clinical trials were skipped and no corners were cut in the testing of its safety.
It protects your tamariki from many serious diseases and stops disease spreading within your whānau and the community. In Aotearoa, tamariki get free vaccinations against 12 diseases, including whooping cough (pertussis), measles and polio.
The Pfizer vaccine for 5 to 11-year-olds has been through clinical trials with children in this age group. In general, the side effects that were reported were mild, didn’t last long, and were similar to side effects from other routine immunisations.
Take time this summer to get the information and advice you need to make the best decision for your tamariki. Snapper in the Bay Sue Hawkins One thing about being semiretired is you can pick your day to go fishing and avoid the boat ramp on weekends. John and I started this morning, leaving the ramp at 6am. Where shall we go? I picked the spot, and we headed out. Beautiful, calm and feeling good. This was going to be a great day. With burley down, I dispatched my two rods, flasher rigs and my cocktail on the end of the hook. My first rod had only been down a few minutes when I had a run. Nod, nod, run, hooked and a bit of fight, but yay, target species. John was dealing to a spikey on the other side, then a gurnard on his other line. Not impressed. In the meantime, I was alternating between my two rods. After catching a 49cm gurnard, thinking of brewing a coffee, my 2 rods went at the same time. I said to John, you will have to pull that one! A gift from me for all his hard work. I was still winding, and it was still pulling line. At this stage, it’s funny what goes through your mind - please do not be a shark, don’t rush it, keep the line tight, ease the rod up, wind down and then away it would go again. Oh so much fun, especially when I could say, “Net please… NET!” No, not the biggest caught out
Brought to you by:
there, but at 72cm, a beautiful fish. At one and a half hours of fishing, John called it, rods in, no more fishing! We have enough! Seven very nice sized snapper, and a couple of gurnard. He had already stopped fishing and had been busy with each snapper, having to ike then bleed them, then put on ice. Time now to make the coffee, while John shinkei jimed the snapper and gutted the fish. So nice to relax and enjoy that sea air. On the way back it was high fives, us oldies are still doing it and all I could think of, a good trial for the Snapper Cup 2022 coming up in March. It also made us think, how privileged we are to have this on our doorstep – we caught enough for a nice feed for ourselves, family and neighbours and stopped there, leaving plenty for another day. The joy of snapper in the bay!

Akuta sets new record Blair Orange was again crowned king of the track at the Nelson Summer Harness Races, this time with driving star pacer Akuta in a record setting victory. The pair took out Nelson Pine Nelson Classic FFA (1609m) on Sunday and the $8,250 purse. The three-year-old Gelding was sent out a $1.40 favourite following three pleasing trials and he duly delivered for punters after a textbook drive by the veteran Blair, setting a new track record of 1.51.8. Akuta showed his class to hold off the fast-finishing Corravally Star. The two-day event attracted plenty of punters to the Richmond A&P Showgrounds, though things were slightly different to usual due to Covid-19 restrictions with the popular Fashion in the Field event hosted by Morrison Square held virtually.
