Nelson gets $9M world cup boost

Listed tree especially special Changes to the Nelson Resource Management Plan have seen 24 trees across the region become protected, each with its own unique story like Madge Wilson’s sprawling pohutukawa, a life-long friend with rather healthy benefits. In 1931 Madge looked on as her father and brother planted a tiny seedling in the bottom garden of her Russell St property. Madge, living in the house most of her life, tended the tree, nurturing
it to the extensive coastal evergreen it is eighty years later. “It’s grown up with me. I can say that because it’s younger than I am,” Madge chuckles. Madge says she wrote to Nelson City Council a few years ago after an arborist suggested it should be protected and with the help of a friend they “kept up the pressure” without a decision though. Madge who is now 88, suddenly became very sick. “I wasn’t expected to live at that time
and I went to the hospice to die,” she says. Yet Madge pulled through because she was determined to get back to her home and look upon her view one more time. “The thing is, having such an attachment to this property, I made a special effort to get back home. I was determined,” she says. “I wasn’t expected to live but after a week I started to recover. It was just

Rugby fans boosted the Nelson economy by more than $9 million during last year’s Rugby World Cup, according to stats released by Nelson City Council yesterday. Visitors spent just over five million of that figure, mostly on accommodation, food and beverages. They made up 16 per cent of spectators at the three games hosted at Trafalgar Park. The figures were presented at last week’s NCC economic development committee meeting, where its contribution of $1.76 million was hailed as helping bring much of the extra spending to the region. In total the event increased the region’s gross domestic product by $7 million and the total revenue generated – a measure that takes the new spending amount and calculates that impact – was $14.2 million. Council says the figures show its investment to pro-

mote the event has paid off, with mayor Aldo Miccio saying the benefits were greater than he anticipated. “The economic gains are quite clear. The event was a tremendous financial success. Council made an impact on the local economy with its contribution to regional GDP and the staff managed the event expenditure with supreme care. “More than the economic benefits, however, I see the benefit of the massive community involvement that was so evident for two months last spring. “I’m enormously proud of the community’s response to RWC 2011 and I’ve never seen us have such a great time together than during the party that was Rugby World Cup.” The figures also showed a combined total of 45,000 people attended the three pool matches at Trafalgar Park.

David Marsh, of Atawhai, with his three-wheeled BMW Isetta that he cruises around Nelson in. The Isetta is classified as a motorcycle, not a car, because it has only three wheels. Photos: Rosie Thomsen.
It’s a car, it’s a bike, it’s super jaffa The “Bubble Car” may just be Nelson’s quirkiest motorbike. It is the only three-wheeled BMW Isetta in New Zealand and the nine-litre vehicle, classified as a motorbike and with a single front opening door designed by fridge manufacturers, is the pride and joy of David Marsh, who brought it with him from the UK four years ago. Nelsonians may have noticed the car around town, and David says it certainly draws attention. “Whenever we park there’s always a crowd of people wanting to take pictures and asking about it. Tourists to Nelson must have photos of it all over the world.” He’s always happy to oblige people’s interest, and though he discourages pas-
sers-by from leaning or climbing on the vintage vehicle, he’s happy to take them for a test drive. The rare car has required four rebuilds, to which “unsung heroes” from local businesses have stepped up. “The Shock Shop rebuilt the suspension, and came up with an ingenious method of putting in the springs, which is now used in places all over the world.” He says Nelson Brakes, Conaghans Engineering, S&S Panel and Paint and many more “clever people” deserve credit for the car still being on the road. You’ll often see the “Bubble Car” floating around town, at the Saturday markets or perhaps tucked into a motorbike park.
Heritage tree NEWS IN BRIEF especially special PLAYING THE UKE: Starting in FROM PAGE 1 a few days before I was due to come home that I received a notice from the council to say my pohutukawa had been made a Heritage tree. It was lovely,” Madge recounts with a bright smile. “I still wasn’t very well at the time but it was the trees I have here and the lovely views of the hills and sea that helped in my recovery,” says Madge. The plan has three categories of listed trees: local, landscape and heritage. Heritage trees receive the highest level of protection under the planning rules, with local trees being the least protected. The six changes to the plan, announced by the Nelson City Council, includes a portion of the reserve land at the end of Blackwood St in Tahunanui being rezoned as “industrial” land. There is also now more
“flexibility” on where solar panels can be placed on roofs, Nelson’s streams and rivers have been re-classified to better reflect their current water quality status, and the port now has a noise management plan and certain responsibilities for mitigating noise. From Atawhai to Tahunanui and out to Stoke, each of the 24 protected trees has story. Madge hopes the heartwood – the ancient Greek translation of its scientific name – she saw planted a lifetime ago will watch over the Wilsons for generations to come. “I have quite a number of great great nephews and nieces who love the freedom of this garden to play and climb the trees. “One of the little girls especially loves the pohutukawa tree. She gets in and out waving her way through the branches, it’s just lovely,” beams Madge.
2012 Nelson music educator Paul Clayton is running affordable ‘Play Uke’ workshops based at the Nelson Intermediate School. There will be a group for complete beginners of all ages – along with those who are not yet confident and would like to review the basics. The workshop is being held in the Nelson Intermediate Drum Room at 10am on Sunday, April 8. For more information visit playuke.weebly.com. TOY LIBRARY RESCEDULES: Rain may have called off the open day for the Stoke Toy Library on Sunday but the group is not letting that hold it back. The open day has been resceduled for this Sunday, March 18 from 11am. MAD SHOW: Top performers and theatre professionals are volunteering their time, to be involved in The M.A.D. But if the price of the world's most expensive coffee hasn't knocked you off your chair wait until you hear how it's made. Kopi Luwak is produced by the Asian Palm Civet animal – which looks like a cross between a cat, a possum and a ferret – that chooses to eat cherries off a coffee tree and then dispose of the green beans. The animal chooses only the ripest cherries and manages to pass them through its body intact with the coffee hulls still attached. While in its di-

gestive system a combination of the stomach enzymes that break down the cherry from around the green bean inside (this is usually a human job and takes a huge amount of time and methods) produces such a unique flavoured coffee. It's said to be very mild and spicy. Hayden Thompson, of Pomeroy's, says 5kg of the coffee was imported to New Zealand recently and he was able to get a hold of a 1kg bag of it. He says he will be roasting it this week and hosting an open night where people can come and taste it for a reasonably modest amount of $20 per cup. "It's really unique and the first time it has ever been in Nelson so will be interesting to see what reaction it gets," he says.

With our weekend behind us, bringing us a beautiful Saturday to spend time outdoors, and a lazy rainy Sunday where it was the perfect time to catch up on a good book or in my case filing cupboards with baking and catching up with family, I hope you are both rested and ready to enjoy this week. My focus for the week-Sunglass Style. I recently purchased an additional pair of sunglasses, needing a sports style for running. I discussed my needs with Sophie, who manages the store and she gave me fantastic advice with a few choices that would suit my needs. The pair I choose are absolutely perfect in suitability, look, and comfort. The girls in this team are knowledgeable on both style and specialty, and the selection to choose from of Dior, Bolle, Adidas and Serengetti to name a few is superb. With the sun setting lower in the sky in the afternoons, now is a great time to head on in to Sunglass Style and update your look. At Fashion Island our stores and team aim above the mark to hit the mark. Have a fabulous week and I look forward to your visit at our Fashion Island.

TEA BY THE SEA: Leah Bensemann, Maya Woodward-Leth, Janaya Trayler and Hannah Bradcock ponder the number of jellybeans inside the jar. The Nelson weather turned on a stunning Friday night and Clifton Terrace School was a bustling hive of activities as folk enjoyed the annual fundraiser Tea by the Sea, which raised $12,500. “I was blown away, I just love the fact the community comes along to show its support, I think the school provides a real hub for the community,” says principal Rob Wemyss. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.
Kevin Allport knows a thing or two about flying. He’s been doing it for 45 years. But after long stints flying aeroplanes the retired driver from Tahunanui says he’s a microlight man now and will never go back. Microlights are a class of aircraft. They weigh less, can carry only two people and have other restrictions. But they are also cheaper, just as much fun and easier to fly says Kevin. This weekend Kevin will travel to Motueka where there will be plenty more people willing to talk about the advantages of microlights at the National Fly In. More than 70 aircraft from around the country will make the journey and give locals an opportunity to talk to pilots about the planes and even go for a ride in one. The National Fly In gathers all of the pilots together for a series of challenges, educational workshops and a chance to discuss rules, regulations, microlight law and experiences and is going to be held on March 16, 17 and 18. Kevin says microlights are an extremely popular and cheap way of flying. “I was involved in all levels at the aero club and really enjoyed it but flying these things is just as much fun and a heck of a lot cheaper.” Kevin now runs a learn-to-fly programme and teaches people how to fly his microlight. “It’s really good. Once people have done their 50 hours and have their ticket they can just borrow my microlight for the weekend and fly all over. It works really well and is much cheaper than flying a plane.” For more information about learning to fly a microlight give Kevin a call on 548 5387 or 027 234 5961.

Local people with local knowledge Founded in 1996 by the McKeown family, Trends Kitchens takes pride in bringing quality kitchens and joinery to South Island homes. Unlike franchise owned companies with a limited product range, Trends Kitchens can provide you a custom made kitchen produced by our own certified tradesmen, in our own factory. As the demand for this style of designer kitchen service spread around the South Island, so have Trends Kitchens showrooms and branches. Not long after we opened a branch in Nelson, we found people were coming all the way from Blenheim to see us. We were happy to create a site to accommodate our Blenheim clients, and our Renwick showroom was born. Today, you can walk into a Trends Kitchens showroom in Nelson, Blenheim, Cromwell or Christchurch, and meet with a local designer who can offer you a free measure and quote for the perfect kitchen to accompany your new home or renovation.
When you confirm your purchase with Trends Kitchens, you’re eligible for a no obligation interior design consultation from the team at ColourPlus, to compliment your new kitchen. Ask our friendly staff for details.

What’s your favourite hospitality venue? The New Zealand King Salmon Hospitality Awards are back for 2012 with nominations opening this week. The awards recognise the local talent of the hospitality industry. To nominate your favourite venue or person fill out the form on this page and send it away to the address on it or drop it off to the Nelson Weekly office at the corner of Trafalgar Square and Selwyn Pl. Once nominated, readers will vote for their favourites via voting forms to be printed in Nelson Weekly, with the winners being announced at a glitzy ceremony at the Grand Mercure Nelson Monaco on May 14. The awards are organised by local representatives from Hospitality New Zealand and the Restaurant Association of New Zealand. Hospitality NZ regional manager Jeanette Swift says the awards are always popular and encourages people to make sure their favourite venue is nominated. “The awards are really prestigious and we encourage people to select their favourites and ensure they get the recognition they
deserve. We hold these awards only every two years people now. The industry does get quite excited about them - it does mean alot to become a finalist or to win.” Categories include best waiter/maître d, best bar person, best bar, best cafe, best restaurant, most outstanding ambience and service, most outstanding ethnic cuisine and most outstanding suburban venue. There will also be categories for head chef of the year, up and coming chef of the year, barista of the year, outstanding beverage list, doorperson of the year, outstanding host responsibility, sales rep of the year and supplier of the year. These categories will be determined by a combination of industry nominations and external judging. All hospitality venues in the Nelson Tasman area should have received a letter with the full details. If not they should contact HNZ or RANZ. Nominations for the public choice nominations close Friday March 30 at 12 noon, so cut out the nomination form, fill it out and make sure your favourite venue is up for an award this year.

Support through bras Women know that finding a bra that fits can be difficult at the best of times. Sadly, for women who have undergone a mastectomy or have an uneven cup size, it can prove almost impossible. The difficulty some women face hit home for Julie Forbes of Foxy Lady Nelson when her friend underwent a mastectomy. Shortly afterwards, a woman from a store in Blenheim approached her because a lot of Nelson women had been going to her store,
because there was nowhere selling bras for ladies who had had a mastectomy. They stock the prostheses, supplied by the Breast Care Centre in Auckland, and have been specially trained to fit them. “Although the bras and prostheses can be expensive, a lot of women don’t realise they’re entitled to a subsidy for it,” says Julie. Foxy Lady Nelson now stocks a great range. “Anything we can do to make it easier is worth it,” says Julie.

Nayland students return from Japan forum Three students from Nayland College have returned home after representing their school and their country at an international student forum in Japan. The students were there primarily for the forum but say the experience of mixing with different people from cultures around the world is something they will treasure for a lifetime. Nayland was invited to attend the forum by their sister school and hosts Ritsumeikan Uji, a High School in Kyoto. Sasha Morgoun, Olivia Parkinson and Gemma Fern joined students from all over the globe to as they discussed, debated and presented information on social responsibility in the 21st century. The students presented information on multiculturalism in New Zealand among other activities. Olivia was also invited to be on a panel that dis-
cussed the effects of natural disasters that included some high-power panellists from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Teacher Murray King accompanied the students and says he was blown away by how well the three performed on what was a world stage. “As a teacher it was a real honour to take these three students. It was an amazing experience to be sitting there watching how well the New Zealand, Nayland kids stepped up to the plate and they were well received. I had numerous teachers and students from the other countries coming up to me saying how much the loved the kids, how great and positive they were.” The trip also included highlights outside the classroom, including a visit to the Tōdai-ji temple, a chance to eat jellyfish and an experience with a Samurai dog.

• The Cap Beaufort, one of the biggest container ships to visit Nelson at 222m LOA, departed. Three other container vessels, a “general” container ship, two log ships and a bulk carrier fertiliser ship kept the stevedores very busy. Additionally the tanker Torea and 11 fishing vessels kept all the port staff busy. • It was great to see the Iron Duke Sea Scouts and the Talisman Cadets on board the HMNZS Wellington as they arrived into the port of Nelson. The ride out to the ship was on the navy ribs would have been very exciting. If you are planning a career in the navy they are very good places to start. • The weekend saw many hundred young people enjoying the Weet-Bix challenge. It was very exciting to see you all participate and grow with
the achievement. Congratulations to you and the organisers. • It has been interesting to see the Wednesday night yacht racers start their races and then drift back over the start line due to our strong currents and the lack of wind. A disappointing night for the sailors. • Launch masters, please slow down. The national rule is 5 knots within 50 metres of another vessel. There is nothing more annoying than being thrown from one side of a boat to the other, or tipped out of your kayak because a launch went past at 10 to 15 knots. The Harbour masters staff will be watching carefully in future for this behaviour. If in doubt- don’t go out. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/ Marine Operations Manager.

Tips

• In the flower garden Autumn can be a disconcerting time for novice gardeners. Perennials are starting to die down, most annuals are past their best (my petunias were looking fabulous until the last big winds!) and impatient gardeners ( like me) can’t wait to get rid of the mucky bits and replace with a nice bit of colour! Impatiens (Busy Lizzies), tuberous begonias, bedding begonias and potted colour like the vinca’s, zinnias, marigolds etc can fill gaps and will flower for many weeks yet. Gazanias are another big bold flower that does well in a sunny spot and is pretty wind tolerant. • This is a good time of year to take stock of what you can change and how you can improve the colour and texture around the garden for next season. • Look at the borders and choose plants that give a bit of a colour boost like Heucheras, such as Lime Ricky, Amethyst, and Palace Purple. Tiarellas are good value also as they have a lovely variegated foliage as well as the fine white stems of fluffy flowers.
Before moving a plant however, it is best to check with your garden centre as some things move better than others. Natives do not like being shifted as a general rule but rhodos, camellias, hydrangeas, maples etc can be moved with care and will do very well.
Q& A Q: I was asked by a gentleman last week when was the best time to plant his Broad beans. A: You can start preparing your garden area any time from now until the end of April. You need to dig your garden over to a spade depth and add some good compost, blood and bone and sheep pellets. If you plant now you will have to ensure you water well and also keep a wary eye out for pests which are still enjoying the warmer conditions. I tend to wait until the end of March and had a good crop last year.

Fertility Associates
When is the right time to check my fertility? This is a question we get asked a lot. If you are concerned about your fertility, we recommend that now is the right time to seek advice from either your GP or a fertility specialist. Does age affect my fertility? Yes! Between 30 and 40 years of age a woman’s chance of a baby each month (if conceived naturally) falls from 22% to 6%. With most women now aged over 36 when they first come to see us, the sooner you speak to us, the better your chances of having a baby.
What happens when I see a fertility specialist? At your first consultation, our doctor will go through your medical history, lifestyle, answer any questions you have in regards to your fertility, and outline your options. Your appointment will most likely include some diagnostic tests. Is fertility treatment just IVF? IVF is only one of the treatments. We have a full range of treatments that start from something as simple as ovulation induction, right through to more complex treatments such as IVF. Your doctor will advise you which treatment is right for you.
With you every step of the way

What policies do you have in place to ensure money is paid by the tenant? We have one of the strictest policies on non-payment of rent by tenants. We check rentals due on a daily basis and make personal contact with any tenant who fails to make their payment on time. Sophisticated systems are in place to minimise arrears including phone, SMS and letter-based reminders.

Why is it important to get your ring checked every 6 months? Your claws will naturally wear, when wearing your jewellery. It is important to make sure all stones are held securely by the claws. Some people would rather risk losing their stone than get the claws repaired when needed, which is a shame. I’ve seen a diamond worth $12,000 fall out because the customer didn’t get the claws on her ring repaired, which would have cost $165. Anyone is welcome to see us for a free claw check.
How much does it cost to get your ring sized and is it done in Nelson? This is a common question we get asked over the phone and when people see me in passing. Depending whether your ring is going up or down in size it is $45 plus any metal used for increasing the size. Our work is not only performed in Nelson, but onsite in our workshop in the centre of Nelson. How long will I be without my jewellery for? All repairs are generally performed and ready to pick up in 24 hours if not the same day.

Blokes line up for fun tri They say they are the experts at travel, but they probably didn’t mean travel by foot, bike and water. The Orbit team at House of Travel are taking up the challenge to compete in the Port Nelson Blokes Day Out at the end of this month. Seven blokes at the travel agency, plus organiser Ruth Leckey who will be competing in the Taylors We Love Shoes Women’s Triathlon the following week, will take part in the fun day out.
Event organiser Amanda Dykzeul says spots are filling up fast but there is still room for men out there who would like to take part in a fun race that is tailored for beginners and those new to the sport. Amanda says she would also love to see more work places enter and challenge the Orbit team. “It’s great fun and a really good way to build camaraderie.” For more details on the race and how to register visit www.nelsonevents.co.nz.

USA experience a huge boost for Nelson youngster Phillip Rollo They might not have had David Beckham pulling the strings from the midfield but beating the LA Galaxy Under-15's was still a proud moment for Nelson’s Ross McPhie. The 14 year-old Nelson Suburbs midfielder has just spent the past four weeks travelling through the United States of America with the Wellington Tornadoes football academy and the 1-0 victory was the perfect send-off before hitting the departure gates just hours later destined for home. During the trip, the Wellington Tornadoes attended the ESPN Disney Soccer Showcase, the Las Vegas Cup and played against academies of Major League Soccer teams and schools from around the country. Ross says it was a big learning curve and the experience had made him want to achieve more with his football. Ross' coach, Guy Smith, says the Nelson College student was one of the best players in the team and caught the eye of himself and the opposition coach during a friendly versus the Real Salt Lake academy. "He has a great understanding of the game for a young lad, which is partly down to him but he's obviously had some good coaching along the way," he says. Ross played in the centre of the park for most of the tour but also made a couple of appearances up front when the squad was short of fit players. Guy says it was no surprise to see Ross stand out in many of the fixtures. "The thing that stands out
about him for me is his competitiveness. He's a winner. He hates to lose and hates to play below his best." He was originally picked for the squad when Guy, a founder of the Wellington Phoenix supporter group Yellow Fever, read about Ross’ goal scoring Chatham Cup debut for Nelson Suburbs in the Nelson Weekly. Ross hosted a quiz night to fundraise most of the money, with dozens of local businesses also getting in behind him. He says his highlight of the trip was watching the Miami Heat live and going to the Grand Canyon. The team also ventured through the Las Vegas strip in a limo, but being 14 years old, that’s the closest he got. Ross was the only player from outside Wellington to make the Tornadoes roster, but his success has already led to three more Nelson players being selected for next year's tour. Matt Tod-Smith, James Peters and Sam Wilson, all of FC Nelson, have been confirmed following trials held in January while there is one more local still in the mix. "Having Ross on board has opened the whole programme up to Nelson kids. Ross has proved that it can work and that the quality of players is there in Nelson. I'm looking forward to working with the boys that have signed up for the next tour." Ross' focus will now turn to the winter football season with Nelson Suburbs. He will hope to make his Mainland Premier League debut this coming season.

Stoke man wins NZ fishing champs Andrew Board
Dave Dixon with the New Zealand Coarse Championships national trophy that he won in Christchurch last weekend. Photo: Andrew Board. Right: Dave with his catch at the Christchurch coarse fishing lake.
Last month Stoke man Dave Dixon helped the New Zealand Coarse Fishing team win the Trans-Tasman trophy over Australia – two days later capped off a remarkable week by winning the national championships. Dave was the only Nelsonian involved in the competition which sees anglers allocated a fishing spot around a fishing pond. The person who catches the most fish over two six hour periods, stretched over two days, wins. The fish, once caught, are held in nets in the water and are released after the weigh-in. Although Dave was already a four-time national champion heading into the event at his "home pond" in Christchurch, he says it was an event he really wanted to win. "It was the first time the champs had been held in Christchurch and because we don't have a coarse fishing pond here in Nelson, I'm a member down there. So I was really keen to do well and take advantage of my knowledge of the conditions." He won, but by the smallest of margins. Stuck in a section of the pond that wasn't as popular with the fish, Dave had to make do with the smallest of fish, some just a few grams, fish most anglers don't worry too much about. But Dave's presistance paid off, winning by less than a kilogram. He says he was thrilled with the win, especially after beating Australia just days before. Dave says there are only a few coarse fishermen in Nelson and most of those participate are European, where the sport is extremely popular.

Day three never eventuated due to persistent rain. Canterbury declared for 420/9 on Sunday in the first innings and had CD on the ropes late yesterday. FOOTBALL: Mark Johnston's Canterbury United secured second place in the ASB Premiership with one game to play after a 2-1 victory over Gagame Feni's Waitakere United on Sunday. Unless semi finalists Waitakere United and Team Wellington can go on to win the ASB Premiershp final, Canterbury United will claim the prized O-League spot along with minor premiers Auckland City.

Records smashed at schools comp Phillip Rollo
Nelson College for Girls sprinter Claire Erasmus on her way to a gold medal at the Tasman Secondary School Athletics Championships on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
The region’s top young athletes ran, threw and jumped into the record books as seven records were broken at the Tasman Secondary School Athletics Championship on Saturday. It was the first time in the event’s history that it was staged on a weekend, with all of the secondary schools from Golden Bay through to Marlborough taking part. Athletics Nelson’s rising talent Chris Brake got himself into the record books again, leaping 1.96m to equal his personal best in the Boys Under-19 high jump. Chris raised the bar to two metres, but was unable to clear the height in his three attempts. Colgate games star Jonas Kale took over Alex Jordan’s Under-15 boys 100m record in a time of 11.67 seconds, just .01 faster than his own best performance. Jonas also won the 200m in a time of 24.20 seconds. Nelson College’s Ben Anderson eased to victory in the Boys Under-14 800m with a time of 2 minutes 15.36 seconds. Sam McKay-Wright, also of Nelson College, made his way into the record books via a 10 min 01.88 second Boys Under-14 3000m race. Young hurdler Gabbi Courtenay raced away to victory in the Girls Under-15 hurdles to win in just 13 seconds. The Nayland College Under-16 Boys 4x100m relay, anchored by Jonas, broke the record in a time of 46.74 seconds. Other top performances came from Nelson College for Girls student Claire Erasmus, Nelson College’s Mike Lowe and Bishopdale’s Brendon Barnett. Claire won the Under-15 Girls 100m, 200m and 400m in times that would have seen her win the Under-19 race in all three disciplines. Mike Lowe took out the Under-19 boys 3k in 9 minutes 17.34 seconds and the 1500m in 4 minutes 15.10 seconds. Brendon won the Boys Under-19 100m in 11.35 seconds, the shot put with a throw of 13.89m, the javelin in 49.46m and the long jump in 6.62m. The top two athletes from each grade gain automatic qualification into the South Island Secondary School Athletics Championship which will be held at Saxton Oval from March 31.

Marchers head off to nationals Two of Nelson top marching teams are heading to Hamilton tomorrow morning to take on the rest of the country at the New Zealand Champs. The Ashton Kilties – an under 12 team – is the current Nelson champion and ranked third in the South Island. They will be competing alongside the senior team, the Ashton Seniors. The seniors are also the top ranked Nelson team and finished fourth at the South Island champs. Nationals start this Thursday, March 15 and run until this Sunday. Both these teams have trained hard all season for nationals and Jodie Jenkins who, coaches both teams along with Marrianne Fenwick, have done a fantastic job with all these girls to get them to the standard they are at.
Softball champs coming to Nelson Nelson’s Stoke Eagles women’s team is gearing up to compete in the New Zealand Women’s Club National Softball Championship being held in Nelson next week. There are 15 teams from all over the country competing. The local team will play at least eight games over four days, beginning with three games on day one (Wed 14th March) against some stiff competition. Nelson Softball CEO Derryn French says Saxton Field is a premier facility and it’s great to host national events. “Nelson Softball has always been a pro-active association, especially over the last five years, and in conjunction with both the local councils has established the premiere softball facility in the country. Softball NZ recognises that and as a result we continue to get top-quality tournaments. We are lucky enough to host this year’s New Zealand Women’s Open Club Championship which is considered to be the premiere women’s tournament in the country.” Stoke Eagles have been the Nelson women’s club champions for the past six years. The team has been training intensively over recent weeks.

Nelson’s Cody Teece (21n) shunts Blenheim’s Zac Thompson (158e) into the wall during the Stanaway Roading Ltd Stock Shock, held at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway on Friday and Saturday. It was the out of town drivers that filled all of the podium places though. Twenty-nine standard stocks took to the track with Invercargill’s Campbell McManaway coming out trumps. Sam Thompson and Ralph Gillespie, both of Blenheim, finished second and third. The best local driver was Trevor Lineham who finished fourth. Photo: Blair Hall/Photoaction.
