Long-serving midwife retires

Being able to “empower women” has been a highlight of retiring midwife Helen Waugh’s lengthy career that has included the previous 18 years in Motueka.

Helen arrived in Motueka from Invercargill and continued her midwifery with a focus on home births.

The highly experienced and skilled midwife was honoured by her colleagues on Friday, 1 November at the Motueka Maternity Unit.

Charge Midwife Manager Tracy Botica says she was grateful to have crossed paths with Helen. “Helen’s had many years of

midwifery in the community and I’ve really enjoyed the energy Helen’s brought into the unit. She’s always been all about women and whanau. We’re honouring her straighttalking and great wit too.”

Her colleague and long-time friend Janice Hayes says she’ll deeply miss working with Helen. “We’ve had lots of fun births and lots of laughs over the years.”

Helen’s knack of finding awkward locations and her almost innate ability to “sniff out the amniotic fluid” was fondly discussed.

There was the birth on Westbank Road with a driveway difficult

to navigate in perfect conditions let alone at 2am in a howling gale. But navigate Helen did, before finding her way to the labouring woman’s home in a yurt devoid of electricity and running water.

But for someone of Helen’s calibre, it was all in a night’s work and despite a number

of “difficult” locations and situations the outcomes were always positive, her experience reigning supreme.

Fellow midwife Rachael Peek says she’ll forever be appreciative for Helen. “She was so welcoming, kind and knowledgeable about everything

when I arrived. Helen touched so many people. I’ll always be thankful for what she’s given and shared with me.”

Debbie Fisher, the DHB’s associate director of midwifery and operations manager cited Helen’s ability of always respecting and valuing women’s

choices on where they wanted to birth as an invaluable asset for a midwife. Over the years Helen has imparted her skills and wisdom to numerous student midwives and says she has always been passionate about her career. “When I finished training I remember thinking if I win the

lottery I still want to be a midwife, I was so dedicated. I revelled in it, just loved it.” Now though it’s time for Helen to spend time in her garden, caring for her animals and enjoying croquet. “And I want to sleep. It’s nice going to bed and knowing I’ll be staying there.”

Local businesses scoop awards

Three local businesses scooped awards at the 2019 Nelson Pine Industries Chamber of Commerce Business Awards on Friday, 1 November.

A record number of 560 people from the region’s business community attended the evening’s awards dinner with Ali Boswijk, CEO of the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce, describing the evening as “a fabulous showcase of local organisations doing great things in the region”.

Marahau-based Abel Tasman EcoTours won the Small Business Award with the judges paying tribute to what the organisation is accomplishing and commenting that what they’re wanting to accomplish is “really exciting”.

“EcoTours were thrilled to have accepted the Chamber of Commerce small business award. It feels great to have created something from nothing and been given recognition for our hard work.

We are so grateful to everyone who believed in us from the start, the special folks who gave us a leg up in business, our families, friends, the Abel Tasman community and most of all the Tasman Bay Guardians team, without which we probably wouldn’t have won the prize,” says Stew Robertson of EcoTours.

Whenua Iti Outdoors won the Medium Business Award with the judges saying the company demonstrated a strong focus on their social impact and their reason for being.

“This is a reflec-

tion not only on our dedicated team and the Whenua Iti Board, but most importantly all the incredible support we get from our partners and funders who enable us to keep delivering experiential learning programmes to effect positive change in our community,” says Whenua Iti.

The Community Impact Award went to Hearing Nelson for delivering practical services as well as a variety of educational programmes to local communities. The judges say it was apparent that Hearing Nelson does an excellent job of providing services from Golden Bay to Nelson, delivering practical services as well as a variety of educational programmes to local communities. Their move into cross generational learning areas was impressive – from tradies to teenagers, primary school to old school, everyone is affected by the noise of new technology.

“Hearing Nelson are delighted to have been awarded the Community Impact award as it recognises the important work we are doing in the community to improve the lives of the 1 in 6 people living with compromised hearing.

It also acknowledges the value of our hearing loss prevention programmes,” says Tracy Dawson, Education and Communications manager.

The Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce is a notfor-profit membership organisation that has been supporting businesses and commercial activity in the region since 1858.

For more than half his life Motueka’s Louis Lucas-Perry has devoted himself to the piano. “I started playing at ten years though my Grandma taught me earlier. Then at 13 years I discovered classical and that was it from there,” says Louis. “Classical’s more complex, it’s a bit more interesting than modern music.”

On Saturday, 16 November Louis will perform a concert at Motueka’s Chanel Arts Centre at 7.30pm.

With a number of performances under his belt including several with the Nelson Symphony Orchestra, and also accompanying the Nelson Male Voice Choir, he’ll be playing ‘classical’ genre that includes Romantic and Baroque and Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata.

“It’s coming back in favour, classical’s trending back to pop through people like Lang Lang,” says Louis.

Lang Lang and Yuja

Wang are classical pianists that Louis looks up to in terms of showmanship, while for playing he looks toward Martha Argerich.

Louis attended Victoria University in Wellington and during his time was awarded the NZSM Director’s Scholarship and also won the Expressions Piano Trust prize which led to a wellreceived concert in Upper Hutt.

“I love the diversity of the dynamics and

virtuosity involved in playing piano. There’s a lot more going on with piano than other instruments in terms of the amount of notes.”

Now taught by Nelson’s Richard Mapp, Louis says he’s “learning a lot” from him and those who attend Saturday’s concert can expect to “be entertained and listen to lovely classical music”.

“Some of it’s quite dramatic and there’s some easy-listening stuff as well.”

Some of New Zealand’s best brick-built creations will be on display this weekend in Motueka’s Memorial Hall.

The 2019 Top of the South Brick Show will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 9am5pm for a $2 entry fee.

Swimming Pool committee will be manning a sausage sizzle outside and all profits from the Show will support the Motueka Technology Education Centre (MoTEC).

The Show, which alternates between Motueka and Nelson each year attracted more than 1700 visitors two years ago in Motueka.

With creations from

shops to fairgrounds, animals and trains there’s something for all ages to marvel at and be inspired by, say organisers.

Blue Moon given nod by Cannes

By popular demand

Motueka’s State Cinema will again screen local movie, ‘Blue Moon’, that has taken the international film scene by storm.

Since its release in August 2018 Blue Moon has screened in more than 20 International Film festivals around the world including Ravenheart International Film Festival Oslo Norway where it scooped the 2019 Best Film Award, Houston International Film Festival winning Best Low Budget Feature Film 2019, Sydney SF3 Smartfone Flick Fest winning Best Feature Film 2019, Mozimotion iPhone Film Festival Netherlands taking out the Grand Prize for Best Film 2019 and the Sydney Indie Film Festival 2019 when

editor Judd Resnick was awarded Best Editor.

Now the film is destined for the pinnacle of festivals, the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2020 where it is an ‘Official Selection’.

The annual film festival previews new films of all genres, including documentaries from around the world. Founded in 1946, the invitation-only festival is held in May at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres.

Additionally, given massive media exposure, the non-public festival is attended by many stars and is a popular venue for film producers to launch their new films and to attempt to sell their works to the distributors who come from all over the globe.

Blue Moon is the third feature from local writer/director Stef Harris, who used his years as a police officer as inspiration.

The film features renowned actors Jed Brophy and Mark Hadlow, telling the story of a gas station owner who finds himself held up by a robber, while other talent and extras were drawn locally, including nine

of Stef’s police colleagues.

The 85-minute crime thriller feature was shot entirely on an iPhone and critics have said the final product has all of the polished quality you’d expect in a traditionally made film.

Catch Motueka’s final screening of this acclaimed film on Sunday, 24 November at 6pm.

Local lads create RTD

There’s been a lot of testing to achieve the result of a palatable RTD, gluten free and less than 2% sugar while being free of artificial flavours and preservatives, but it’s a feat a couple of guys from Motueka Valley have accomplished.

Jamil Eisele and Sam Bulman launched their vodka-based RTD’s earlier this year and they’re excited to be approaching their first full summer with their range of Seltzers on offer. Fellow school mate of the pair, Gijs Deblauw, designed the website and is responsible for snapping some great promotional photos.

“We really wanted to make something that tasted nice while being natural and not full of sugar,” say the duo.

Determined to bring the “best-tasting” drink possible to the marketplace, Seltzers come in three flavours; West Indian Lime, Raspberry and Lemon, Blood Orange.

With Seltzers predominantly a summer drink, they say this summer will be their true test and with a

number of liquor stores, including all in Motueka, stocking the refreshing RTDs, the future’s looking bright for the ex-Ngatimoti and Motueka High students.

“We’re especially grateful to Sue from Liquorland who was the first to stock us and has been really supportive during the whole journey.”

It was their upbringing in the Motueka Valley that the guys say instilled an awareness of responsibility to look after the planet.

“Our goal is to bring

you the best tasting drink we can. But while we do this, we’re determined to make a positive difference in New Zealand and further from home. That’s why we’re putting 10% of profits into saving our oceans and marine life.”

Together they’re “carefully” selecting different projects throughout their journey and focusing on areas where they know their time and money will be making “real” change.

“It’s a well-known issue, but we continue

to pollute our oceans with rubbish and harmful chemicals. Beaches are being strewn with litter, reefs destroyed and animals becoming extinct.”

So if you’re looking for a refreshing summer drink, that has even converted the most devoted beer drinkers, head along to your friendly liquor store for a pack of Seltzers and know while you’re enjoying your drink you’re also helping the environment.

Find them on Facebook, Seltzernz.

Locals join Tuia 250 voyage

A flotilla of six vessels are currently sailing New Zealand’s waters as part of the Tuia 250 Voyage. The journey of national significance is showcasing the Pacific, Maori and European voyaging that brought us together and acknowledging the first onshore encounters between Maori and Pakeha in 1769-70.

More than 400 New Zealanders, including nominated secondary school students, are sailing aboard the flotilla, on voyage legs lasting from one day to two weeks.

Local Motueka grandmother Sheila Budgen, a long standing Spirit of New Zealand volunteer, is taking part on three voyages and last month returned from a Gisborne to Whitianga voyage that two Tapawera Area School students, Zac Hughes and Jack Higgs, also took part in.

“It was just great, it’s been amazing it really has. I’m looking forward to the next one,” says Sheila.

Affectionately referred to as ‘Grandma’ aboard the tall ship ‘Spirit of New Zealand’, Sheila says the students on board were “a real mixed bunch’ who relished the opportunity to connect with Maori culture.

“The kids were getting a lot out of it. It was great hearing Maori spoken so much on the boat. It’s good for youngsters who don’t have much contact with Maori culture.”

The ten-day trip had the crew high-tail it around the East Cape to beat weather, which inevitably saw a few

seasick, an occurrence that Sheila says isn’t unusual.

The sailors went ashore at Tolaga Bay to the local marae where they were greeted by an enthusiastic Maori welcome.

“You can see why there were misunderstandings all those years ago. When they did the challenge they frightened the life out

of me,” says Sheila.

And an opportunity to have a look around a replica waka proved eye-opening for those sailing on the tall ship.

“We were impressed with how far they travelled on relatively flimsy looking vessels.”

With all technology removed from the students possessions, Sheila says they were reliant on talking to

one another and soon bonded.

Arriving in Whitianga they celebrated the end of their voyage with a hangi lunch before returning to their homes.

For Sheila she’ll be back on board taking part in a commemo rative journey around the Bay of Islands fol lowed by a Tauranga to Picton voyage.

Clued Up Kids comes to Motueka

For the first time Clued Up Kids has come to Motueka schools and one student from Riwaka School has already proven how effective the programme is.

When Kalia Sharp returned home with her goody-bag from the event, she set about creating a ‘safe’ place for the family to meet in the event of a fire. And upon checking her home’s smoke alarms instigated the installation of a couple courtesy of local Fire and Emergency NZ’s Ross Bailey.

“It’s exactly what we wanted people to do,” says Ross.

Kalia was one of more than 360 students from the local area to benefit from the safety skills course for 9-11 year-olds.

Clued Up Kids is a multi-agency programme teaching primary school-aged children confidence and life skills to help them stay safe in a range of real-life scenarios.

Students from St Peter Chanel, Tasman Home Educators, Tasman School, Riwaka School, Motueka South,

Brooklyn, Ngatimoti School, Parklands and Upper Moutere took part.

The hands-on activities included a ‘shaky house’ for practising what to do in an earthquake, a smoky fire simulation teaching children how to react during a house fire, as well as demonstrations on water safety, interacting with dogs, road safety, quad bikes, truck and cycle safety, as well as first aid.

The agencies involved included the Tasman District Council, District Health Board, Nelson Bays Primary Health, Police, Fire and Emergency NZ, Civil Defence, New Zealand Red Cross, CET Landskills, and Neltech.

Motueka, Richmond and Nelson Rotary were aboard volunteering for the week, and the Motueka Lions Club also provided volunteers. The children enjoyed fresh fruit

generously supplied by Golden Bay Fruit as they moved around the two-hour interactive programme.

“The children are of an age where they’re becoming increasingly independent and therefore more likely to encounter situations where there may not be an adult around to tell them what to do. Clued Up Kids gives them the tools to keep themselves safe,” says Clued Up Kids coordinator Jo Perrett.

Police Report

Hi All,

Great to get some decent rain over the weekend.

I’ve been talking to a local shop keeper who was telling me about his vaping products. He said he doesn’t sell a lot of vaping gear and that he thought the amount of tobacco he sold hadn’t changed since vaping started. A 50gm pack of tobacco now costs $100….next year it will be $110. What a huge amount of money that is taking from people’s budgets – if they had a family imagine how much food could be bought for $100!!

We had great success recently using the town security cameras to locate and identify a male who threw a shopping trolley against a plate window and broke it. That will be an expensive lesson about drinking and doing stupid things. Also a young lady he was with from Nelson decided she would like to take one of the hanging flower baskets home – so she is being followed up as well.

Once again alcohol “won” on the night. Take care out there!

Brooklyn School students have been working hard creating for the fair. The Junior Syndicate have been busy planting vegetable and flower seedlings while carefully watching them grow. The juniors have also made a range of stunning ‘Kokodamas’ which will be for sale at the Schools own fundraising plant stall.

This coming Saturday, 16 November starting at 4 pm there is going to be an amazing community gathering and school fundraiser. Brooklyn Schools’ annual book fair has evolved and everyone is invited to join in the festivities. It’s the perfect place to grab a bite to eat for dinner on your way home after a Saturday afternoon at the beach or the river.

This year the festival starts at the new time of 4 pm, ending at 8 pm, just as the sun is starting to set. The new time of twilight is to encourage people to come out, browse through some books and enjoy delicious food while relaxing in Brooklyn Schools picturesque grounds. Make the most of the atmosphere and listen to live entertainment including the highly talented Elisha Hobbs, popular Motueka band Lemongrass and crowd favourites the Te Awhina Kapa Haka Group.

The middle Syndicate have been creating crafts including ‘Shrinky Dinks’, Christmas decorations, and painted rocks. These students will also run the stall where their crafts will be for sale. Meanwhile, the Senior Syndicate are currently learning about ‘Enterprising Businesses’ and are coming up with ideas on services they can provide for the fair, how much they need to spend and how much they need to charge to make a profit. The Brooklyn Book Fair is not only the schools’ major fundraiser but it’s also a wonderful learning opportunity for the students.

Meals delivered to your door Letters

Dear Editor, CHOICE

The people of New Zealand should definitely have their say on this very important issue, concerning, a person’s right to live or die.

There is nothing so disturbing, as witnessing a loved one suffering and under difficult circumstances, for many years, and not having quality of life. There are many survivors in this world, who have beaten the odds, and lived a full and active life. There are many, many people who have just been blessed and slipped away quietly in their sleep.

To live or die is a personal choice, and should not be made by anyone, but the person themselves, and how they wish to end their lives, and that is then, the person’s responsibility, and the peace they wish.

It was a game of pure rugby, clean, fast, and wonderful sportsmanship, on behalf of South Africa. Humble and appreciative of the support from 57 million people in South Africa, and so they danced!

Foundation president Ruby Aberhart was in attendance and had the honour of cutting the birthday cake.

Ruby reminded the group they began in Motueka’s then Swan Hotel, where McDonald’s now stands.

The Probus group is all about friendship, fellowship and fun in retirement and encourages healthy minds and active bodies through social interaction and activities with retirees in the community.

BACK or NECK PAIN?

Then try a Teeter

Because in most cases it works! Inversion Therapy is the oldest recorded medical cure for back issues, rst recorded by Hippocrates in 400 BC, otherwise known as spinal traction. Traction was used by modern hospitals for many years however because it is a slow process and ties up hospital beds for many weeks, they recently stopped using the treatment.

Inversion Therapy is gentle and relaxing if done properly and has many other bene ts apart from relieving back pain, it helps realign the spine and pelvic area, loosens up tight muscles, increases oxygen to the brain, stimulates circulation and the lymphatic system and has many other bene ts.

Inversion NZ have been teaching people how to use this treatment for over twelve years, it is an amazing process with most people getting o the Teeter pain free for the rst time in years or with their pain substantially reduced. The relief usually lasts around 30 minutes to three hours and as the pain returns you use the machine again, after using this method of treatment, in a few weeks the relief increases, which is the discs starting to retain more uid, muscles starting to loosen up and the body coming back into alignment. In our experience most people are pain free in around three months, then the Teeter is used daily to maintain the health of the body.

WHY TEETER?

The biggest issue with inversion tables is there is no safety standards that need to be met. Because of this, other brands use mild steel for 100% of the metal involved. Mild steel is great for static loads, in other words things that don’t move such as chairs, tables etc, however with Inversion Therapy there is considerable movement and this movement causes mild steel to ex. Because it always exes in the same place it eventually causes metal fatigue and can result in failure.

All Teeters are manufactured for extreme safety. Heat treated high tensile steel has been used in all areas subjected to stress. High tensile steel is far stronger and most importantly does not ex. This means Teeters are the strongest and safest tables on the market today.

IT IS P UR E LOGI C AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs: It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws uid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of uid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on uid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

De-Hydrated discs are less exible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more e ectively and returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the ow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood ow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph ow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

Posture: Poor posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A di erence in leg length causes most of the hip and k nee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car.

Trying to correct posture is extremely di cult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the ow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

This is pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only di erence between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

Our Back Pain Expos

We host a number of back pain expos throughout the country almost every weekend, these expos are a way for people to try out a Teeter Inversion Table and feel the bene ts for themselves in a way that is instructive and informative.

It is also a great way for people who already own a Teeter to come along and get a refreshment course on the use and operation of their Table and clear any questions they have about it.

Sessions run continuously from 11am to 4pm and there are no bookings required, just come along at a time that suits you. There may be a wait during certain times and in these instances chairs are set out for anyone waiting for a turn, or anyone who just wants to ask us a few questions.

We strive to cover the entire country and always try to book the most accessible venues we can. All our upcoming shows in the region are listed in the red bar below, otherwise check out our website for more

Let Frans take care of all your water needs

Even if you’re connected to the mains water supply, you may want to consider using rainwater for your garden or for other household uses. By doing this, you may be able to reduce your demand on mains water supply and in some areas water charges.

Frans is very knowledgable and able to help you with all of your rainwater tank questions, simply pick up the phone and give him a call, ask him about his water tank specials while you are there.

If you need your water filtered, you will require a filtration expert and guess what? Frans is your man, he is highly skilled in water filtration as well!

Did you struggle last summer to keep your garden going through the worst of the heat? Perhaps it’s time to think about installing an irrigation system. Once again, Frans is the man to help with your irrigation needs.

There are three key benefits to an irrigation system:

Save time – there’s no need to get up early in the morning to water the garden.

Frans is a filtration and irrigation genius! Yes this talented man is able to help you with all your water, filtration and irrigation needs. And with summer on our doorstep it’s time to consider your water options for the summer season.

Rainwater tanks are the perfect solution over summer. Installing a rainwater tank is relatively simple and inexpensive, and the benefits are ongoing. Rainwater is a good source of water for using on your garden. It can also be used for washing your clothes, flushing the toilet, and – if it’s properly treated – for drinking and other household uses.

If your property isn’t connected to a mains water supply or is located a long way from your mains water supply, rainwater may be the most viable water supply.

Save water – correctly installed and operating irrigation systems will deliver the right amount of water at an appropriate rate.

Happier plants – plants will receive a consistent amount of water that allows for strong growth, flowering and fruiting. Far better than the “feast or famine” that often occurs with manual watering.

Make that four benefits to an irrigation system, the children will love you for having any lawn irrigation installed, it makes for so much fun during the summer heat.

Motueka Cricket Club - Second Grade Vs Waimea Toi Toi United Black 09/11/2019

Motueka defeated Waimea Toi Toi United Black at home on Saturday to make it three wins from three games so far this season. The game was in doubt after some morning rain with more forecast for the afternoon, however both teams were eager to play and Memorial Park was quickly drying out.

Crucially, Motueka won the toss and chose to bowl first.

The pitch was spicy and our opening bowlers were on the money

from the get-go. Blake Barrett (4 for 27 off 8 overs) took a wicket in the first over and removed two more of the top order in his first spell. Waimea were struggling until Luke Devine (53) stabilised the middle order but only three other batsmen reached double figures. Ranbir Singh (3 for 12 off 4) also bowled well to help wrap up their innings for 144 from 34 overs.

The pitch still contained some demons but once again opening batsmen Corey

Motueka Croquet

Pascoe (39) and Sam Sturks (29) got Motueka off to a good start with a 70 run partnership, scoring at better than a run a ball. After they were gone R Burns (4 for 26 off 6) took another couple of wickets but Waimea were running out of bowling options at the other end and Justin Hobbs (43 not out off 21 balls) smashed anything short to the boundary. Motueka (146 for 4) easily reached the total in the 20th over, winning by six wickets.

On a hot Friday the club held the Rowling Rose Bowl competition at the Memorial Domain. Six teams participated over five games before the dynamic duo of June Ferguson and Lynne McConachy swept in as winners having won all five games.

South Island Title for local karter

Mapua’s Bo Hill, a year-9 student at Waimea College, first took up go-karting as a seven-year-old and has raced out of KartSport Nelson for a number of years.

“I love setting up, testing and tuning the kart to each specific track. All karts are pretty much the same so it is the minor set up things that can keep you ahead. I love the adrenaline and the speed of the kart and how technical they are to drive,” says Bo.

Racing his Rotax Max 125cc Kart, Bo has had a “very successful” year that culminated in winning his first KartSport South Island Sprint Championship Title over Labour Weekend in Dunedin.

“It feels amazing to finally win a Title. I have always wanted to win a national title and to date we have been very competitive but have had disappointments in finals due to technical or track issues.”

Bo was the former 3NZ back when he

was racing in the Cadet ROK class. Now in the Junior Rotax class the competition is tough but Bo has never given up and is racing harder and better than ever before says fellow karter and Kartsport Nelson committee member Kevin Barker.

Earlier this year Bo won the Sunbelt Sprint Champs and took out the McLaren Racing Mainland Series title, a 26-race championship that was contested at three major iconic karting events on five different tracks across the South Island between June and September.

“This year has been pretty good.

Finally all our hard work is paying off. Special thanks to Mark Butchart our mechanic who has helped Dad and mentored me over the past year,” says Bo.

But it was his recent South Island Sprint Championship Title over Labour Weekend that takes the cake.

Qualifying and two heat races were held

on the Saturday and the pre-final and final on Sunday.

Bo managed to claim pole position by 0.04 of a second over former 2 x 1NZ driver Jacob Douglas from Christchurch.

Despite Jacob win-

ning the first two heats and the pre-final, Bo went on to lower the KartSport Dunedin lap record twice and then went on to win the Final which was an all or nothing race to claim his first South Island Title.

He’s now focused on the KartSport NZ National Sprint Championships which are scheduled for next Easter in Christchurch. “After that maybe I’ll move into Formula Ford and more karting.”

Youth touch teams to represent this weekend

This weekend Motueka/ Riwaka teams will compete at the Tahunanui Youth Touch Tournament competing against teams from Nelson, Canterbury, West Coast and Marlborough.

The Tournament focuses on development for U12s and U14s in preparation for higher level competitions such as Inter-ProvincialSeries and Touch Nationals.

Terina and Joe Graham-Wineera from http://www. soulutionzsports.

nz came on board this season to assist with youth touch.

Several months ago they created a youth rep subcommittee to the Motueka Riwaka Touch association and have since:

10-13 year olds

• conducted group trainings to improve skills and instill comraderysense of belonging and empowerment

Now the couple are encouraging the community to cheer on the four teams representing us this weekend in Tahunanui, the U12 Girls, U12 Boys, U14 Girls and U14 Boys.

“Local youth touch players have shown such great commitment and continue to achieve on the field, it’ll be great to have Motueka’s support on the sideline, the players will thrive,” says Terina.
