Everest Challenge: 44 laps of Codgers

Businesses: police presence needed

Businesses in Nelson’s city centre want a greater police presence on the street to deter would-be offenders as they’re subjected to the increased rate of crime being seen nationwide.

The desire was expressed Wednesday night at a meeting between about 50 retailers and

local police, hosted by Mayor Nick Smith.

“I’ve been approached by at least 20, probably closer to 30, mainly retail businesses, but also retail workers, who are worried about an increase in the level of crime in the central city,” Nick says. “What I want to do is to provide the opportunity for those of us to that have positions of responsibility in the city to be able to hear

directly from [businesses] as to what [they] feel is going on in the city.”

And these worries were made clear to relieving area commander Mark Clayton and sergeant Kyle Bunnings. Incidents raised include business owners being subject to death threats, having weapons drawn on them, and assaults on staff, alongside an increase in shop-

lifting and disorderly conduct from those under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

“We’re all experiencing a lift in crime,” said Stirling Sports’ Wyatt Crockett. “Going back five years, you’d see one or two incidents per year. Now it’s almost daily.”

He said shoplifting is costing his businesses “thousands and thousands” of dollars and so he’s having to divert staff to keep a watch

on customers, which has an impact on the atmosphere in the store.

“It’s taking us away from what we’re trying to do, to create a nice environment for our customers… it’s unsustainable.”

Another business owner in the city centre, who asked not to be named, said she’s concerned for

the safety of her young teenage staff members and of herself.

“I’ve been there for about five years… it’s been a fairly pleasant place to work but now I’m actually considering walking out,” she says. “We’ve had gang members, just last week, leaning in on the windows and scouting around… I’m getting more and more concerned that something is going to happen.”

Another manager who also asked to remain anonymous said she’s had to deal with indecent exposure, abusive customers, threats against staff, drunkenness, and a “huge” increase in

shoplifting.

“We need to see a change,” Wyatt says. “Businesses are hurting from it.”

While the police’s statistics from the past five years don’t reflect an increase in crime, Clayton said it was clear given the comments made by the business owners that the number incidents were being under-reported.

“That’s going to be fed back to my troops,” he says. “We will be increasing our foot patrols in the CBD.”

He also confirmed that a new permanent area commander and a new community constable for the CBD will each be starting early in the new year.

As for what retailers can do, Mark recommends businesses “call everything through… no matter how trivial” because having more accurate statistics will have an impact on how an area is policed.

111 is the number to call for anything that is currently happening or may soon happen.

Sergeant Kyle Bunnings also encouraged businesses to trespass problematic customers.

“From a policing point of view, it makes a massive difference to us because rather than us having to wait for them to commit an offence… they actually commit that offence just by entering.”

O’Neill-Stevens said Nelson City Council is also taking a longer-term approach to inner city crime prevention through environmental design, such as looking at areas that may need more lighting or CCTV cameras.

“Those are discussions that we’re going to be taking through into our Annual Plan and also into our Long-Term Plan to make sure that we’re retaining that safety that should be in the heart of our city.”

Mark says he found the meeting “extremely beneficial.”

“It was great to get the pulse of the retail community, and their concerns were fully taken on board.”

Waimea Road re-opening next week

Waimea Road is set to reopen after being closed for five months.

“We are pleased to confirm that Waimea Road will be re-opening early next week,” says Nelson City Council’s group manager infrastructure Alec Louverdis. “This is great news for the Rutherford Street upgrade just ahead of Christmas.”

Large portions of Waimea Road and Rutherford Street have been closed for five months to allow for a stormwater upgrade with “great” progress being made in recent weeks.

Though the exact re-opening date is still uncertain due to rain being forecast this week, Alec is confident it will be before the holidays start.

There are still another five months left before the works are scheduled to be completed, but the re-opening of Waimea Road will mean a return to normalcy for the flow of traffic.

The Van Diemen Street detour will be removed, and the road will once again link up with Trafalgar Street. However, the temporary roundabouts will be left in place as there is further work to complete on the detour route after the holiday period.

Some traffic management will remain on Waimea Road while finishing touches are being applied to the road surface.

“The project is on budget and on schedule,” Alec confirmed.

So far, contractors have installed stormwater pipes with a 1.8 metre diameter and completed much of the new sewer pipe and watermains. Work to asphalt the roads and reconstruct the kerbs is underway.

The fencing running along the top of the Little Wembley park has also been replaced.

Once contractors return to the site on 6 January 2023, the sewer pipe and watermain works at the bottom of Bronte Street, safety improvements at the intersection of Van Diemen and Rutherford Streets,

the reconstruction of concrete islands along Rutherford Street, and the final asphalting and line marking of the roads will be completed.

“Nelson City Council and Fulton Hogan wish to thank the public, including those businesses affected by the works, for their cooperation and understanding throughout the project so far,” Alec says.

“We understand parts of this project have been challenging, but once done, the resilience of the city will be greatly improved.”

Cyber Security incident affecting health data in Nelson

Patient health records used by professionals in Nelson are currently inaccessible after the data was caught up in a cyber security incident.

The Cardiac and Inherited Disease Registry data is accessed by clinicians in Nelson, Auckland, Wellington, Tauranga and Waikato.

However, Te Whatu Ora –Health New Zealand says that they are not able to be accessed due to an incident with a third-party IT provider.

“While the above records are currently inaccessible, there is no evidence at this stage that they have been subject to unauthorised access or download,” Te Whatu Ora media lead Tracie Simpson says.

Te Whatu Ora, Health New Zealand is working with government agencies and the affected IT service provided to determine the nature, scope, and impact of this incident.

“These investigations are at a very early stage and will take some time to complete,” Tracie

says.

The incident did not target Te Whatu Ora systems directly, instead it affected an information technology service provider used by Te Whatu Ora.

“We would like to reassure the public that there has been no disruption to health service delivery and all Te Whatu Ora health services are continuing to run normally.”

Tracie says they understand this situation may be distressing for people and they want to reassure the public.

This IT service provider’s incident also affects six health regulatory authorities including Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board of New Zealand, The Chiropractic Board, The Podiatrists Board, The New Zealand Psychologists Board, the Dietitians Board, and the Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand.

For anyone concerned, a free help line is running between 8.30 am and 5pm Monday to Friday. The number to call if you are concerned about you information is 0800 638 924.

Nelson’s top Trade Me searches

Nelsonians are dreaming of the great outdoors this Christmas, according to Trade Me’s top searches for the region.

The internet trading site has revealed that the most searched-for items for the Nelson Bays area in the last month have been caravans, outdoor furniture, Hilux, and kayaks. This was followed by fridge/freezers, campervans, trailers, tractors, couches, and tents. Trade Me spokesperson, Millie Silvester, says with 650,000 New Zealanders visiting their site every day, their search data is full of

great insights for Christmas shopping.

“For 20 to 30-year-olds, it’s all about technology. Gaming laptops, iPhone, Nintendo Switch, and PS5 were the biggest trending items last month,” she says of the nationwide data.

Those aged 30 - 40 were looking at outdoor furniture and tents the most last month.

“Apple watches were a popular search among 40 - 50-year-olds,” says Millie. “Interestingly, kauri was a hit in this group too.”

For those in the 60+ age group Birkenstocks and linen were hot items.

TOP 5 SEARCHES NELSON IN

“If you’re still in doubt, Crocs remain an incredibly hot item, with more than 10,000 searches in the past four weeks. Now that summer is here, we reckon they’re a great gift,” she adds.

Toys also make up a good chunk of Trade Me’s search data in the lead-up to Christmas.

National and international toy trends were combined with the top searches onsite, to predict what Kiwi kids will be unwrapping on Christmas morning.

Barbie has made a big comeback for 2022 and Pokemon collectable cards have also been in hot demand, too.

‘Wikitōria’ cabin community officially opens

A cabin community that is set to provide a roof for those who are experiencing long-term homelessness has officially opened in Nelson.

“It’s a match made in heaven”, Salvation Army Nelson Tasman community ministry director Ros Johnson says of the collaboration between The Salvation Army’s Housing First team, Habitat for Humanity, and the Victory Community Anglican Church.

A large congregation from Nelson and Tasman came together to celebrate the launch of the eight new cabins on Monday that will become transitional housing for members of the Nelson community from next year.

The cabin community has been in the pipeline for a few years after Habitat for Humanity Nelson’s Nick Clarke saw something similar operating successfully in Carterton.

Jaap Noteboom, team leader

of Housing First says they are building a future for those who deserve a second chance.

He says Housing First has identified suitable residents who have all expressed interest, and they will be notified shortly.

“There was this great opportunity that we learned through our Covid-19 response as we helped people in motels, that it was important to keep people together.”

Jaap says, along with the accommodation, Housing First will provide residents with support and coaching.

“This is about getting people’s lives back on track” Jaap says.

Neville Jackson of Victory Anglican Church, which provided the land for the village on a three-year lease, was at the opening.

“I’m very conscious about the hard work that now begins, to build a community and a home,” he says.

“A chord of three strands is not easily broken,” Neville says

of the collaboration, adding he hoped the community will be strong as a church.

The eight cabins built by NMIT/ Te Pukenga students, each contain a bed, desk, a chair, and a lazy chair with access to a common area containing a kitchen with communal toilets and showers.

Wayne Jackson, chief executive of NMIT/ Te Pukenga, says the three-year collaboration with Habitat for Humanity was one he hoped would continue.

“It is a valuable social project, where students are getting real-life experience by building real homes,” Wayne said.

Nelson MP Rachel Boyack acknowledged the work of the students.

“It’s an exciting development where people will have a place to rest their heads at night”

Rachel says a lot of planning has gone into this community.

“Housing First offers a global solution to homelessness, where the initial focus is on providing a home.”

NBS partner with Brook Waimārama Sanctuary

NBS and the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary Trust have entered into a new sponsorship agreement that will see NBS become a key strategic sponsor of the sanctuary for the next three years.

This year the sanctuary has been working on a major upgrade to its visitor centre and the significant investment from NBS is helping to finance these works.

Located at the entrance to the sanctuary, the NBS Visitor Centre is the gateway to the immersive experience that the sanctuary offers. The upgraded building will feature new displays about the history of the sanctuary and the conservation work that the trust carries out. Visitors will also

be shown a display celebrating its recent successful sculpter symposium, see Gordon the gecko and study native koura (freshwater crayfish) in a tank.

NBS chief executive Tony Cadigan says the sanctuary is one of the most important ecological environments in the country and we are lucky to have it in our backyard.

“The sanctuary is vast and already has some important programmes for endangered species that are national success stories. NBS are proud to be associated with this environmental treasure and look forward to seeing the NBS Visitor Centre completed.”

Brook Waimārama Sanctuary chief executive, Ru Collin, says the increased level of sponsor-

ship will make a huge difference to work that can be done.

“With the NBS Visitor Centre upgrade nearing its completion, we can welcome our visitors over the summer months and provide an enhanced experience. NBS’ funding also means that we can focus on our long-term conservation goals of introducing more native species into the Sanctuary.

The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary is the largest fenced Sanctuary for endangered plants and creatures in the South Island and features an extensive network of walking tracks. It is currently open to visitors from Friday - Sunday, 9am-5pm and from the 20 December open Tuesdays to Sundays 9am-5pm.

Hira celebrates two decades, farewells teacher

There’s been lots to celebrate at Hira Rural Kindergarten recently. Despite losing most of their gardens and play area during the August storm event, the community mucked in to help the kindergarten get back on its feet and it’s now looking “spick and span”, says head teacher Trish Cooper. “Everyone pitched in, even those who were the worst affected turned up with their wheelbarrows and spades to help.”

Trish is especially delighted to see everything back to normal as she prepares to bid farewell after 19 and a half years as head teacher. “It’s been a fascinating career. I’ve loved every moment. It’s so rewarding.”

Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association senior education advisor, Margie Meleisea, says that Trish’s energy and passion for Hira Kindergarten and community will be greatly missed.

“Trish creates a space where everyone has a place, and everyone has a space to contribute.”

Trish’s career has spanned 42 years including 10 years in England, but she says that Hira Kindergarten is a “very, very special place”.

In fact, she’s come the full circle and is now teaching the children of some of the children she used to teach when she first started.

But she says that “family and community involvement make it such a joy to work here”.

Trish says that community has

always been the key to Hira Kindergarten’s success.

Hira Kindergarten celebrated its 20th birthday last month, and invited the “famous five” – Jan Fryer, Rachel Smith, Carol Kearns, Helen Gerry and Sally Jamieson –to join them in their celebrations.

“It started 23 years ago,” says Jan. “Rachel and I were both pregnant with our second child and she thought that it would be really good if there was some childcare in Nelson North.”

After a community survey showed strong support, Rachel

talked Jan into helping her.

“‘I just need some help presenting this to council and the Ministry of Education’, she said to me.”

It wasn’t quite that easy, but every obstacle that was put in her way made her even more determined, and eventually council gave them a 5-year lease and the Ministry of Education approved funding to establish a kindergarten.

However, they didn’t provide all the funding needed so Carol, Helen and Sally joined in and soon the whole community was behind them helping to raise funds, donating materials, and providing services for free.

Designed by local architect Aiden Pykett, Jan says that it was “everything we imagined and more”.

Opening day, 3 November 2002, the five children of the “famous five” started kindergarten together, “just to iron out any bugs”, and a week later another five started.

From there the roll grew and, 20 years later, Jan’s thrilled that it’s still going as strong as ever.

Jan is also delighted that working in with the community continues, from working bees to tennis lessons, samba dancing, learning musical instruments, “the community is here to back us up,” says Trish.

Kāinga Ora refurbishes former council flats

Refurbishment of the former Nelson City Council pensioner flats on Nayland Road provides a win/ win for the community, according to Nelson MP Rachel Boyack.

Two years ago, Kāinga Ora Homes and Communities bought council’s 142 properties, which needed substantial repairs, with $12 million from the sale proceeds going to establish a new council Housing Reserve to support social and affordable housing projects.

Julia Campbell, Kāinga Ora Nelson Marlborough and West Coast regional director, says the retrofit

programme aims to improve older Kāinga Ora homes by making them warmer, drier and healthier.

“It’s improving and working with what we have, rather than creating something new.

“We’re really pleased to be able to make a positive difference to our customers’ lives, and to see them so happy when they return to their newly-repaired homes,” she says.

Kāinga Ora completed the significant upgrade and improvement under its retrofit programme of the first eight units in July and on the remaining 10 at the end of November.

The homes have been freshly painted inside and out and new carpet and vinyl laid. New double glazing, insulation and heat pumps have been installed to make them warmer and drier.

They have new bathrooms and kitchens, and their layout has been changed so they now have an open-plan living space.

Solar panels have also been added to their roofs as part of the Kāinga Ora solar panel trial, which aims to reduce customers’ power bills. Ramps have been installed outside each unit and a new fence has also been put up at the front of the complex.

Last week, Rachel was thrilled to get a sneak preview of the refurbished flats.

“These properties were very run down and following the work

Kāinga Ora have completed, the feedback from tenants has been extremely positive. When Nelson City Council sold these properties, it was controversial at the time.

“We are now starting to see the benefits of Kāinga Ora’s ability to invest significantly in improving the quality of state houses in Nelson.”

Kāinga Ora will carry out retrofit work on the three other former

Nelson City Council complexes next year and in 2024.

The other benefit from the sale of the homes was the establishment of council’s Housing Reserve which has provided nearly $4 million in funds to support the development of around 42 homes by Nelson Tasman Housing Trust and Habitat for Humanity.

“Everyone in Nelson deserves a warm, dry and affordable place to call home.

“I’m pleased to see more public and community homes being built, and our public housing being made warm, dry and accessible,” says Rachel.

It’s an antique Christmas up the Brook

Steve Galpin and Troy Murawai have decked their Nelson home with trees covered in vintage ornaments that they have collected over the past four decades.

Originally from Auckland and accustomed to moving, they packed up about four years ago and left a converted church in Brightwater to move into their new home in the Brook, Nelson.

Steve, an antique dealer with Richmond Antiques, has been buying the vintage decorations for 30-40 years. His most recent purchase was at Eclectic Antiques on Hardy Street.

“We used to pick them up at garage sales, but we’ve stopped looking now,” he says, partly because of the size of the collection and also the cost.

Some of the decorations are 70-years-old.

“There’s a story in every one of them. I look at them and I

remember where I got them from,” Steve says glancing down at his favourite decoration, a glass bird sat upon a pink and gold-painted bauble.

Spending a full day hanging their collection of vintage

decorations, they don’t relax until it’s done.

The living room in their home is packed full of decorations with three trees, Santa figurines, and a newly-acquired ‘12 days of Christmas’ handmade garland hanging

over the hearth; a recent gift from a friend.

Decorating their house marks the start of the Christmas season for Steve and Troy, with friends bringing over Christmas cake and truffles to share.

Last week the Government announced

for Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council that will make walking and cycling safer and more accessible for our community Nelson, Richmond and Motueka will receive

projects that include separated cycle ways and speed controls at schools This is fantastic news for our community and is part of our work to upgrade New Zealand s transport system to make it safer, greener, and more efficient

We also celebrated 100,000 homes across New Zealand that have benefited from insulation or heating retrofits through our Warmer Kiwi Homes programme Across the Nelson-TasmanMarlborough regions 2,905 houses have been made warmer and dryer This is just one of the ways we’re ensuring all New Zealanders have a warm, dry place to call home

International students return to Nelson SH6 flood repairs on track

State Highway 6 repairs are on track to be completed in time for the summer holiday season, but contractors have an uphill battle to finish on time.

With less than a week before the December 18 opening, scheduled for 10pm, the timing is tight.

There is still much work to be done on the stretch of road as of last week.

Contractors are confident they will have road between Nelson and Blenheim open on time despite saying the project has increased in complexity as it’s progressed.

The seven-week long project, which has closed the main link between Nelson and Blenheim, between Hira and Rai Valley, added an hour to the commute between the two centres via SH63.

Visiting the site on Wednesday, Mayor Nick Smith says the road is the most important transport link in the region and it’s clear the crews have been working hard to meet their deadline.

“It’s a big ask ... the scale of the engineering work is incredibly challenging.

“The road closure has been really disruptive ... there’s a huge amount at stake if we don’t meet that 18th of December deadline.”

He was joined by the Minister for Emergency Management, Kieran McAnulty, who says the closure meant they could work to future-proof the road.

“We had a choice to close for seven weeks, to do it once and do it right.

“The progress that’s been made and being able to see it

today is a testament to Waka Kotahi.

“There’s always a way for central government and local government to work together.”

Kieran says the unfortunate reality is that weather events, like the one in August that damaged the road, are becoming more frequent and severe, which needs to be taken into account when working on projects of this scale and nature.

The $15.3m, seven-week proj-

ect has seen multiple sites strengthened, or rebuilt from the foundations, including several culverts that weren’t damaged in the recent flooding.

About 120 contractors have been working on the site, working nights to meet the deadline.

Nick says it will take at least another 12-to-18 months for Nelson to say it’s fully recovered from the weather event in August.

Secondary schools in Nelson are expecting an increase in international students in the 2023 academic year now that New Zealand’s borders are open again.

International student numbers plummeted during the Covid-19 pandemic, affecting school budgets, class sizes, and staffing.

Nayland College will welcome 50 international students in 2023, after only having 16 in the latter half of this year.

Principal Daniel Wilson says having these students back on site is “exciting” for the school.

“It adds diversity to our student population and means we can run additional classes to reduce class size. They also allow us to invest back in school-owned facilities, which opens up more spaces for domestic students.”

However, he says they will be managing numbers carefully to ensure they can be accommodated without impacting their domestic roll.

Nelson College is also seeing a growing interest and demand from students abroad.

Headmaster Richard Dykes says they will have 23 full-time students and close to 90 boarders (including international students) next year.

“We expect the number of international students to grow through 2023 and beyond.”

A win in the weed war

Imagine if they had a difficult problem to solve, obviously would require numerous committees to decide how to solve and then another few to work out all the practical means to accomplish then someone to ensure work completed. No wonder our rates bill is so expensive.

I was once proud of the way our city looked but not any more. It’s an eyesore now and tells me the council doesn’t care.

We have a state highway through Greymouth and it is lovingly mowed and has flower

Nayland zoning enters second year

Nayland College is heading into the second year of its enrolment zone and principal Daniel Wilson says so far it has “definitely helped” in managing the size of the school roll.

The school’s board agreed to accept 50 out of zone students in both 2022 and 2023 which he says has “been about right” in terms of demand.

“We have not grown in size since 2021 with the roll for 2023 look-

ing slightly less than this year.”

Ministry of Education spokesperson Nancy Bell says they received five applications for a directed enrolment into Nayland College in 2022.

Two applicants withdrew their applications and the remaining three were approved.

“We have received four applications for directed enrolments for the 2023 school year. One of these has been approved and three were

declined.”

Nancy says that directed enrolments are only approved in “exceptional circumstances” where a student would be significantly disadvantaged by not attending the school.

This overrides the home zone requirement for the college.

“Any directed enrolments are given careful consideration so that there can be the best possible outcomes for the learners concerned.”

What weather will Santa bring?

JO KENT

It’s still a couple of weeks away but, according to Niwa’s latest seasonal climate outlook, Christmas Day is earmarked to be the start of a dry spell in the Top of the South with higher temperatures than average this summer.

Meteorologist Chris Brandolino says more sub-tropical northeast winds may cause more frequent hot and humid days, where the temperature is above 25C.

“From around 19 December, we can expect slightly cooler temperatures from the week prior, but we’ll see a return to more warmth as Christmas Day approaches,” Chris says.

“The week between Christmas and New Year currently looks to be settled and warm.”

A prolonged dry spell is possible between mid-December and early January thanks to a period of high pressure but could be followed by big rain events.

“Instead of frequent rain-

fall throughout the summer months of December to February, we can expect rain to be ‘lumpier’ in that much of the summer rainfall happens in just one or two big rain events while the rest of the time it’s dry.”

He says people with water tanks or those who work in viticulture or farming should be mindful of storage over this period.

“We need to prepare for extended dry periods interspersed with big rainfall events.

“It’s not to say the overall rainfall we receive will be any more than average for the time of year, but it may happen in ‘lumps’ rather than frequent showers.

“We call those big rain events and are expecting to see them this summer.”

Chris says the ongoing marine heatwave that developed in the waters around the country is also set to influence the summer climate as sea surface temperatures sat between 1.1-1.7C above average in November.

Cathedral 180 Years

A

Nelson Cathedral has had a significant place in Nelson for over 164 years includ-

ing 180 years of church services on Piki Mai celebrated this year. Today, it remains firmly centred in the community, holding many civic services as well as Anglican Church services. Remembrance events for Anzac and Armistice Day, the memorial service for the Queen, prayer services for Ukraine and celebration services such as that for the Trafalgar and Sea Sunday and the ever popular Pet Service, are all part of the Cathedral's events calendar and are all funded by the Cathedral.

Upcoming at the Cathedral for Christmas are local choir and brass band concerts, church Christmas services, Christingle for kids and the community favourite, Carols On The Steps, on Christmas Eve.

Running daily now is the Cathedral’s annual Christmas Tree Festival featuring 70 lit and deco-

rated trees inside the Cathedral. During December, the festival is open late Friday nights and holds free weekday lunchtime concerts at 1pm until December 21. In the opening two weeks, there have already been over 3000 visitors.

“We have two catchphrases, one being ‘a place that matters’ reflecting the importance through history of the Cathedral to the City; and ‘the Heart of the City’ due to our central location and our aim to be the spiritual heart of the city,” said Dean Graham O’Brien. Not well known is the fact that the regular running costs for the Cathedral are self-funded through its congregation, with no community-based funding and limited finance from the Anglican Diocese for specific purposes.

“For a small city cathedral, it certainly punches above its weight - we offer world class choral music in a lovely peaceful setting that is open to the public all day, every

day,” said Rev Steve Jordan. “We are accessible to everyone and busy every week with activities, services and community events.” Music is an important area for the Cathedral and it pursues high standards. Organist Paul Chan is one of NZ’s most accomplished organists and his voluntary at the end of the 10am Sunday service is worth a visit just on its own. Nigel Weeks QSM compliments Paul as Choral Director and his extensive worldwide experience has resulted in a wonderful choir.

The Cathedral’s junior choir programme, KidSing, invites applications from primary school pupils who are interested in music. As well as choral lessons, the programme offers free lessons in singing, brass, string or piano/organ, which is an amazing opportunity for local children. The hope is that KidSing will nurture children’s musical gifts now and into the future.

Cycling funding welcomed, but still more to do

Local cycling and sustainable transport groups have welcomed additional government funding for accelerating active travel infrastructure, but say Nelson City Council should already be prioritising such projects.

“It’s good news, but it is only a drop in the bucket,” says Bicycle Nelson Bays convenor Bevan Woodward. “We shouldn’t have to rely upon somewhat unexpected funding boosts.”

The funding was awarded by Waka Kotahi as part of the Transport Choices programme to sup-

port councils in giving people more options in the way they travel.

“Delivering on these projects will help address our current infrastructure deficit while also meeting future needs caused by population growth and climate change,” Nelson MP Rachel Boyack says.

Nelson City Council has initially been allocated $5 million which will make up at least 90 per cent of the budget for improving eastwest active travel connections between the Brook and Waimea Road.

“Nelson already has high rates of walking and cycling,” says Nelson

City Council’s group manager infrastructure Alec Louverdis. “But we need to build on that enthusiasm and provide more safe and convenient connections for people who want to make the choice to take a bike or walk.”

Included in the plan are protected cycle paths, safer pedestrian crossing facilities, and dedicated speed control measures.

Bevan thought while having a better active travel corridor between the Brook and Waimea Road was “good,” it’s not the area that should be focused on.

“There’s a big disconnect between Nelson’s CBD and the cycleway that comes down the Railway Re-

serve,” he says. “To get through from St Vincent Street to the CBD, you take your life into your own hands.”

He would like to see the roundabouts at intersections along St Vincent and Vanguard Streets improved.

“They are horrible, nasty, dangerous places,” he says. “It’s a significant hazard in the middle of what would otherwise be a connected path that gets you from Richmond to Nelson.”

He thought installing temporary, plastic, raised pedestrian crossings across each approach would slow traffic down and make the intersections safer for pedestri-

ans and cyclists, for relatively little cost.

Concept designs for the projects will be developed in the new year and followed by community engagement so those affected by the changes will be able to have their say. Currently allocated funding is indicative until Waka Kotahi works with councils to explore how projects can be progressed in line with Transport Choices timeframes, and may be adjusted after this consultation.

If you’re reading this, congratulations you’re reading the first edition of Property Hub, a twice-monthly supplement featuring some of the latest and greatest homes on the market in Nelson and Tasman.

Property Hub will be delivered inside the Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly newspapers, reaching more than 33,000 homes and businesses, across the Nelson and Tasman region.

The properties offered for sale inside Property Hub are those being sold by some of the region’s most professional and respected agents.

It’s an interesting time for the property market, which is exactly why it’s perfect timing to begin publishing this supplement. Ensuring accurate, dependable information is critical to making good decisions and the professionals advertising homes for sale inside are among the very best.

If you’re selling your home, you want to make sure as many people as possible see it advertised for sale. That’s where reach becomes so important and having your home advertised inside Property Hub means you’re getting it in front of as many

eyeballs as possible. No other medium gets to as many locals as the Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly combined. So, if your home is advertised here, your agent is doing a good job for you.

For those looking for property, this supplement is a great place to start. It is, however, not published every week.

For the absolute latest in new properties on the market you can head to the Nelson App which

is updated every 30 minutes, making sure you’re seeing the latest property listings as they go live.

We hope you like our first edition of Property Hub. Like everything else in the Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly, we hope you find it informative and useful.

REINZ stats show 120 properties sold in November

One hundred and twenty properties were sold in Nelson and Tasman in November, according to information released by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand.

The data shows 70 of those were sold in Nelson and 50 in Tasman, with the median sale price $700,000 in Nelson and $869,500 in Tasman.

REINZ CEO Jen Baird says the House Price Index for Nelson/ Tasman/Marlborough/West Coast had the second strongest performance over the past month, the third strongest performance over the past three months and the fourth strongest performance over the past

12 months.

“In Nelson, while interest from most buyer segments has eased off, those looking to downsize are a strong presence in the market. Consumer confidence is low due to fear of a recession, rising interest rates and lending criteria restrictions impacting many buyers. Sales counts declined in all three regions in November for these very reasons.

“However, Nelson continues to attract people far and wide over summer who want to enjoy the lifestyle the region offers. Local salespeople are hopeful this may increase market activity over summer.”

Property market holds well in Nelson

Nelson’s residential property prices are holding better than most, according to information released from QV.

The average house price dropped just 1.1% in the last three months which is much better than Auckland (-3%), Hamilton (-4,4%), Wellington (-5.2%) and Christchurch (-1.4%).

In fact, only New Plymouth (-0.4%), Marlborough (-0.9%) and Queenstown Lakes (-1.0%) fared better than Nelson over the three month period ending on November 30.

This positive news caps off a

tough year for the housing market nationally with prices falling further in the January to November period than at any other time in the previous 15 years. However, house prices across the country increased nearly 30% in 2021, according to QV, so the national average drop this year of 10.2% still means that for those who have owned their property from the start of 2021 will have seen the value of their home rise around 20% over the past 23 months.

Nelson’s average home value was

$807,497 at the end of November 2022, according to QV, which is 8.9% lower than at the start of the year. QV Nelson/Marlborough manager Craig Russell says 2022 had seen the residential property market transform into a much more “traditional market”, whereby buyers now have the “luxury of more choice and time to do their due diligence”.

“Realistically priced properties that are well presented or renovated continue to achieve good numbers at open homes. Properties that are overpriced are receiving little

interest, with potential purchasers clearly discounting dated homes that are in need of renovation, due to rising costs. This is a contrast to last year, when the difference between renovated and unrenovated was much smaller in the scramble to purchase property.

“There is now more widespread acceptance that home values will continue to slip back for a while yet, and that we may have yet to see the full extent of pressure coming on households due to rising mortgage rates,” he added.

Amazing Value For 2 Acres, House and Sheds

108 Fairfax Street, Murchison

The price has changed to represent incredible value, as the Owner is keen to start her next plans. It is so hard to find a couple of acres, enough pasture for a pony or two, grow a large vege garden, make use of the great sheds, or just room to roam! Comprised of 2 titles, this special property is close to the village centre but feels rural, especially when you wander down to the lower terrace and stand in the shade of the huge established totara trees and look at the long view through to the mountains. There is also an impressive walnut tree! The house has a new roof, 2 large bedrooms and a sunroom.

The lounge is heated by a logburner plus a heatpump, and a spacious utility area leads out to a huge covered deck. The sheds include a double garage, a 16m x 5m barn, and a shed/pony stable. If you want to have sheep there is a small set of yards and ramp, and a small round pen for minis or ponies. There are so many things you can do with a property this size, so rural in feel with stunning views up the valleys to the mountains, but a short walk to the shops and amenities of the Murchison village. Please ring or email me to set up a viewing time.

Beautifully Different From The Rest

Beautiful Quality, Private Home In Quiet Location

20 Travers Avenue, Richmond 8 Hari Way, Mapua Enquiries over $1,500,000

Enjoy the conveniences of a nearly new home without the hassle of setting up the garden and landscaping! The current owner came from a country environment and noticing that you can see to the ranges from a couple of vantage points on this elevated section, bought Number 20 in the popular Hart Rise area, and set about to create an absolutely gorgeous garden and landscape. It is a mixture of vege growing spaces, flowers and shrubs, and is fully fenced for the safety of your children, your pets, or both!

8 Hari Way is a beautifully designed and built property that you will be proud to call home, situated close to the amenities of the ever popular Mapua village, but enjoying the privacy of having green space on 2 sides. The thoughtfully designed home is impressive at first view, with it’s appealing vertical cedar timber cladding, presenting it’s back to the world, and then offering that wow factor when you step inside. Built by the builder/then owner in 2018, the home floods with light from the capture of all day sun, and is designed for easy care living both inside and out, with a view to being a “lock up and leave” if required.

Being SunSmart in our sun-shiny region

With the title of second sunniest spot in Aotearoa (top spot goes to Taranaki)

comes the great responsibility of being SunSmart.

Along with Australia, New Zealand has the highest malignant melanoma rates in the world. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in New Zealand and more New Zealanders die from melanoma than die on our roads.

The good news is that prevention is as easy as slip, slap, slop. Slip on clothing and into shade, slop on sunscreen (broad-spectrum and at least SPF 30), slap on a hat, and wrap on sunglasses.

More good news: most melanomas can be successfully treated and early detection can lead to more effective treatment. Check your skin and if you notice any unusual skin changes or see/ feel a spot or mole that is different to others, see your GP for a skin examination.

Skin check vouchers

The Nelson Tasman Cancer Society just wrapped up their third year of allocating $75 skin check vouchers, with more vouchers available from October 2023. In the meantime, a number of vouchers have been reserved for GPs to allocate to the patients they know would especially benefit. If you believe you are high risk, please contact your GP to ask about your eligibility.

Hoppy life acknowledged in exhibition

When you look at 88-year-old Joan Ewers today, you wouldn’t imagine the mum of eight spent 60 years as a hop harvester and farmer in Tasman.

For the now Richmond resident, hops were her life from 1952 until 2012 - even though she was allergic to them.

Joan’s fascinating life story is one of six featured in ‘Beyond the Face’, the Age Concern Nelson Tasman exhibition which begins this Thursday at Pūtangitangi Greenmeadows Centre.

Funding and communications officer Miriam Clark says the exhibition, which is now in its second year, aims to challenge viewers to look beyond a person’s current appearance.

“It challenges people to see them as a whole person with fascinating lives, colourful experiences, and wonderful achievements.”

Joan grew up on a farm in Taranaki and in 1952, at age 17, came to Nelson with a friend for the apple harvest in Upper Moutere.

However, as they only wanted to come for four weeks, they were put onto the hop harvest which fitted their timeframe.

Joan recalls the hop harvest being

very hard work.

“It was all done by hand and a string cutter would cut down the hop vine, bring it to the pickers who then plucked the hops off the vine.”

Work started at 7am and they worked all day under the hot sun.

The hops were measured in bushels and put in hemp sacks and taken to the kiln to be dried.

However, when it was time to go

home to Taranaki, Chris, the hop farmer, who was 10 years older, asked Joan to marry him as he had “instantly fallen in love” with her.

They were married in October 1952 when Joan was 18.

“I was allergic to the hops, then I married the hop farmer - crazy,” she says. “And it was 14 years before I became immune. Every year at harvesting time I got a

rash and it nearly drove you silly. It was very, very itchy. I didn’t take anything for it, I just became accustomed to it.”

Joan says life was incredibly busy, particularly in the period leading up to harvest time.

They had a mixed farm of 46 acres, milking a few cows, raising weaner pigs, growing potatoes, and, of course, hops.

“Our large farmhouse had no in-

sulation, but it did have running water,” says Joan.

“The washing facilities for the dishes were in an open back porch, and the laundry was a couple of tubs with a lean-to from the house running out to a couple of posts and a copper sitting in the corner.”

Over the years Joan had nine children - seven sons and two daughters, although sadly their second son died from leukemia. She witnessed many changes in the hop industry, with it becoming increasingly mechanised in the 1960s.

In 1975 they moved to 300 acres of land Chris had inherited on Neurdorf Hill, where they focused on sheep farming with half a dozen cows and eventually poultry, focusing on heritage purebreds. Chris passed away in 2001 and Joan stayed on the farm for a further two years, and eventually moved to Richmond.

Joan continued working on the hop harvest after they moved to Neudorf Hill and into town, eventually having her last season in 2012.

‘Beyond the Face’ runs from 15 December until 27 January.

NZ high in list for crossword cheaters

A new study has revealed who in New Zealand, and what countries cheat the most when solving crosswords.

WORLD OF Musicals

Crossword solving website Unscramblerer.com conducted the poll asking if using help to solve a crossword is cheating. Of English speaking countries, New Zealand came second in the cheating stakes, only behind the United Kingdom.

Of the regions, Tasman and Nelson were sixth and tenth most likely to ‘cheat’ respectively. But people’s opinion of what constitutes cheating differed throughout the survey.

Of the repondents, 41 per cent of people said yes, 22 per cent said no it was not cheating.

Some had differing opinions with 26 per cent saying it wasn’t cheating only if help was used “rarely”, while 11 per cent of people had no clear opinion.

Conditions clear but wind holds for sailing champs

Despite a horrendous forecast earlier in the week, the weather played its part for two fantastic days of sailing in Tasman Bay for the regional Champs regatta. Saturday saw overcast but great sailing conditions, with a gentle to moderate breeze and the visiting sailors getting used to the Tasman Bay chop.

Sunday was forecast to blow. With sunny skies, the wind was expected to top 20kts, and with a strong outgoing tide the race committee elected to keep the smaller boats inside the harbour.

It proved to be a good decision, with the more experienced sailors ‘on the limit’ and enjoying strong wind and some big waves out in the bay.

Coming back through the Cut was described as anything from “terrifying” to “bloody awesome fun”.

There were a few swims, and lots of grins! It was the biggest regatta at the club for some time, with a fleet of over 80 boats in attendance including a strong fleet of about 30 Zephyr sailors turning up from Christchurch, Wellington and even Auckland for their

class South Island Championships.

Wakatere Boating Club’s Mike Drummond took out the win, with Steve Edwards (Naval Point Club Lyttleton) second, and Tony Gable (Nelson Yacht Club) in third.

Worser Bay Boating Club’s Joanna Kempers took out the women’s title. It was also the Europe Class South Island Champs, with a small but competitive fleet won by Tim Fraser-Harris (Nelson Yacht Club), from David Davies (Charteris Bay Yacht Club) and Rob Bentley (Nelson Yacht Club).

The Regional Champs had everything from Optimists through to 29ers and fast catamarans. There was a strong fleet of Starlings, and the club is looking forward to hosting the Optimist and Starling South Island Championships as part of the Whakatu Regatta over the 14th & 15th January.

The organisers want to thank the small army of volunteers from the club for their countless hours of work before and during the event. Full results can be found at www.sailwave.com/results/nelsonYC

Stephen Taylor prevails at the Sunshine Classic

A successful night for the returning Stephen Taylor at the Collision Centre Sunshine Classic at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway.

The two-day meeting was rainedoff on the Friday, but Saturday night went as scheduled after early rain dried out in the afternoon. Stephen Taylor was dramatically undone at the last Classic when a back marker spun and took him out in the final lap while leading, this season he planned to get the job done. Two heat wins saw him top on points for the feature, $3000 up for grabs plus an option of dropping back a row for $1000 per row. Stephen opted to start off the front given the calibre of drivers on show. He opened a gap from the chasing bunch, a yellow light from a car spinning in front almost caught him out, managing to stop just in time to avoid serious damage. He got a good jump on the restart and led again. A second yellow bought on for the flipped 56n of Cambell McManaway closed the field once again. this time he had 16-yearold American Joel Myers hot on his heels, and a couple of back-

markers kept things interesting.

Stephen took the feature win by a car-length from Joel with Connor Rangi making up places after a broken car in heat one to claim 3rd in the feature and the fastest lap of the night.

The Street Stocks ran their Lift n Shift Triples event, pairing local drivers with their Canterbury visitors. Two wins out of three for the team of Paul “E” Leslie, Jordan Gillespie and late recruit Tom McSherry saw them comfortably take out the title. Cody McCarrison, Ryan Morrison and Kahu Epiha were 2nd with Ryan

Musgrove’s heat 2 win helping partners Cody Pedley and Corey Schumacher into 3rd overall.

The open Stock Car club champs went to local driver Riley Eathorne, the Waimea College 1stXV openside flanker putting a deft move on in heat 2, spinning the lead two cars to take the vital points to win by a solitary point after heat 3. Wade Sweeting finishing 2nd with the consistent Morgan Dumelow in 3rd.

The Mike Greer Homes Quarter Midget series transferred to Saturday, a couple of leading drivers unable to make it, but Darcy Ras-

mussen stole the show with the first heat win; the first race win of his career. Jack Brownlees took out the second heat and feature to lead the series. Local driver Locky Martin was 3rd. It was a tough day at the office for Meneka Rawson, rolling twice in the night at the start of the first two races, she retired after being a bit sore after the second one. The Youth Ministocks ran their “secret” best pairs format, only finding out who their partner was at prize-giving. It was a turbulent night, a few cars getting airborne on a drying track. Luke Higgins

won the first 2 heats before copping it in an incident in the final heat. He was feeling a bit sore after the safety belts did their job. Jack Burson and Elisabeth Brunt took the title from Deegan Broker and Jayden Vibert. Cooper Whalon-Frans and Charlie Booth finishing 3rd. it was a busy night for track staff with a few crashes but many of the tracks around the country succumbed to rain. Racing resumes in the holiday period with the Burson Logging Demolition Derby on Thursday the 29th of December.

Local rugby stars to play on world stage

Lucy Mahuika (Ngāi Tahu) says she’s eager to soak in as much as she can as she travels to Auckland as part of the New Zealand Maori team for the World School Sevens this weekend.

She is one of two local players in teams for the tournament, with Nelson College’s 7s captain Timoci Sauira named in the Fijian Schools team.

Lucy has made a name for herself as an up-and-coming player in the local scene, playing first five-eighth for Nayland College/ Stoke where her skill saw her named in the Mako’s U18 squad at 16-years-old, earlier this year. She says, being able to play for the Maori 7s team at the World School 7s is an exciting opportunity to combine two big influences on her life.

“My culture has always been a big part of me. Rugby and my culture have been my two biggest passions.

“To play rugby and involve my culture, it means a lot to me.”

While it can be a bit intimidating at times to be one of the younger players in a squad, she says their experience is something that she

wants to take advantage of. “I’m really looking forward to soaking it all up and learning everything I can to develop my game overall.”

Lucy says while the local women’s 7 scene is almost non-existent, she was given a late call up to play for St Andrew’s College in a South Island competition where she was

able to play in front of selectors. “I got the call from the manager (that I had made the New Zealand Maori team) when I was at home. No one was here and I lost

Griffins forced to settle for draw

After knocking a 52-ball century against Buller, Ryan du Plessis and the Nelson Pine Griffins were forced to settle for a draw in their Hawke Cup match after rain spoiled the action on day two.

Travelling down to Westport, the Griffins had held a slim 16 run lead at 321/6 after Buller had declared on 305/5 after 65 overs.

Despite the game ending in a draw, they were the only team to see any action over the weekend, with the weather cancelling the premier competition and teams shaking hands without a ball being bowled.

The NBS Nelson Nyxons’ twoday game against Wairarapa was also not played, with the visiting team’s flight cancelled due to weather.

No sherpa needed for local riders

Mountain bikers Seamus O’Donnell and Cameron Jones started their ride at 3am on Saturday morning.

They had set themselves the task of completing 10,000 metres of elevation gain called an Everest Challenge, by climbing more than the equivalent elevation (8848m) of the tallest mountain in the world, with the added difficulty of also riding the downhill portion through the Codgers trail system.

While Seamus had to pull out on lap 34 of 44 after a crash that saw him go to hospital for stitches and an x-ray, Cameron ‘knocked the ‘bastard off’ himself by riding his final lap on a unicycle at approximately 11pm after he got a flat tyre.

“He’s built different,” says Seamus, reflecting on the achievement. While Seamus wasn’t able to complete the challenge himself, he was happy it had been a medical injury that took him out of the ride instead of quitting.

“It was just as I was starting to feel confident I was going to finish, because there were stages in the morning when I felt like I wasn’t going to.

“We had quite a few mates show up and I was over excited, hitting the corner a little bit too fast.”

The pair say they had purposely made it all come together at the last minute so they didn’t have a chance to back out.

“You want to catch yourself by surprise before you talk yourself out of it,” laughs Cameron.

Choosing IV line and Tu Meke as their track of choice

because of its suitability to the challenge, the pair were raising funds for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter. They both have experience riding long distances, with the idea for this most recent Everest Challenge coming on kilometre 160 of a 170km gravel trail ride.

Cameron, who’s the New Zealand U23 MTB and gravel champ, had also done the same challenge on a jump track at Kaiteriteri Bike Park two years ago.

Seamus is also an experienced downhill racer and endurance rider, saying they regularly do some sort of challenging ride.

“Most weekends we do a five hour, or so, mission. We do a lot of racing too.”

The pair had sponsorship from MyRide Richmond, Talleys, Craigs Investment Partners and PF Olsen, who also

donated $1 for every lap that anyone completed of IV Line and Tu Meke on the day.

Expecting to burn around 1000 calories an hour, Seamus and Cameron had a strong support group that included their parents at the base of their ride, which also had a whiteboard crossing on their lap count.

Catching up just over halfway through their challenge, Seamus and Cameron were still in high spirits despite being covered in mud from head to toe. They had struggled in the early morning out with the fog reflecting their headlamps, but say with the sun coming out, and their friends getting on track to help support them, their spirits were still high despite their bodies starting to feel the grind.

Second time lucky for touch up-and-comer

Touch player Jonty Pickworth has been named in New Zealand’s secondary school mixed U18 touch team for the Pacific Youth World Cup in Brisbane next year.

After being named as a co-captain in the New Zealand U16 mixed team scheduled to play in a Trans-Tasman competition that was cancelled earlier this year, he says it’s exciting to have another crack at playing for his country.

With the national competition this year, where he was playing for Nelson, also cancelled due to Covid-19, the selectors had looked at older squads for invitees to trial.

Jonty says he backed himself to earn a selection, believing he had put his best foot forward.

“I think I had a good chance because I played pretty well out there.

“When I found out I was pretty happy. . . I told my girlfriend first because I was with her at the time.”

Jonty says his strength is his fitness and defensive ability, using his high workrate to stand out on the park.

Alton Street

From very early in the settlement

Alton Street carried a raised water flume from the Brook to the Hardy Street flour mill.

Raised on posts, the race was quite low and a horse-rider once knocked himself out on it. It was lowered

to road level and the water still worked the horizontal wheel for the mill, before being discharged into the eel pond - now the lake in Queens Gardens.

Horse-drawn trams used the street into the 1920s.
