It may not be an advisable way to get your Marmite fix, but waking up in Nelson Hospital is one way to get your hands on the scarce spread. Patients at the hospital are still being offered Marmite for their breakfast despite it not being produced for the past five months as its manufacturer, Sanitarium, repairs its earthquake-damaged plant. Production is expected to resume in October but jars of Marmite have been selling for hundreds of dollars on Trade Me as desperate foodies seek out the few remaining jars in the country. For Nelson woman Solveig Sheed, all she had to do to get her hands on it was tick the right box at Nelson Hospital when ordering her breakfast. Maria Chhina, food manager for Compass Group which supplies food to Nelson Hospital, says the region got lucky with its supplier, Bidvest, having a higher than usual stock of the small Marmite portions when the plant closed down. She says some patients have been very appreciative and that the hospital will have enough stock to last until production starts again in two months. “Some have said ‘yay, I can’t believe you still have Marmite, thanks so much’. But for most of them what’s on their toast isn’t their chief concern, it’s getting better,” says Maria. Solveig says she is a Marmite fan and was pleased to see it on the menu.

School speed zones lowered Your Community Newspaper
Newly erected speed zone signs around schools are encouraging drivers to take their foot off the pedal. The first two of a number of new variable speed zones Nelson City Council is planning are now operating on Nayland Rd and Main Rd Stoke. School speed zones encourage motorists to slow down to a maximum speed of 40 kilometres per hour at the beginning and end of the school day, making it safer for children near their school. Three more signs are planned for the region, including around schools on Vanguard St, Nile St and Muritai St. Road safety adviser for Nelson City Council, Margaret Parfitt says the signs have been well received by parents and teachers. “Reducing speed limits by just 10km/h on our local streets will bring significant road safety
benefits to all road users, particularly children on their way to and from school, cyclists and walkers. The difference between hitting a pedestrian at 40km/h and 50km/h literally is a matter of life or death.” Nayland Primary School principal Janice Gulbransen says the signs are great news for students in the area. “It makes it safer for students and we think the traffic speed over the few days it has been active has slowed, which is great.” Janice says there has been near misses in the past, although she hasn’t seen any. But she says she is happy the council has decided to take a proactive attitude to the area. “Let’s not wait for an accident until we do something, let’s be proactive, so I commend the council for not waiting for a fatality before they did something.”

Grant Pound and David Sherriff will be two local skydivers taking to the airs of the Tasman region this week for Good Vibes, New Zealand’s largest annual skydiving event. Now in its 11th year, the event is expected to host more than 150 visiting sports skydivers from around the country. One of Nelson city’s main streets and the hub of its nightlife is set for a major upgrade, with Nelson City Council approving initial concept plans for Bridge St. NCC has been working on plans for several months and has been in discussion with business owners on the street about the upgrades. And now that councilliors have approved the plans the council can start work on the detailed planning process. The upgraded area is on Bridge St between Trafalgar and Collingwood Sts and will cost $250,000. The council says the aim of the upgrade is to make that part of town a nicer place to spend time during the day and a safer place at night. Aspects of the project include new paving, outdoor seating areas and wider footpaths in some areas, as well as improved and atmospheric lighting. Bridge St is home to the vast majority of the city’s nightclubs, and an area where people often gather to drink. Nelson police have been targeting problem drunks in the area to make it safer and the council is playing its part in cleaning up the area with this upgrade. Once drawn up, the detailed plans will then be used to tender the project for construction. The concept plans for the project can be viewed on the council website.

Students at Nelson College for Girls may have to wear the same thing to school each day but they are looking forward to showing off their fashion sense this weekend as part of the Spring Fashion Fling fundraiser. Nelson College for Girls PTA is hosting the fashion “fling” at the school this Saturday night but organisers say it will be much more than a fashion show with a night full of entertainment. “We have a great night planned and all the money raised goes back into the college to support the girl’s education. The evening is intended to provide a good night’s entertainment, so get a group of friends together so get your tickets soon to avoid disappointment,” says PTA chair Brenda Holdaway. Postie delivers art to NZ expo
The Nelson Habitat for Humanity team on its way to Sri Lanka last week to build homes for people after 26 years of civil war. The group finished its week-long build on Friday and was part of a team of 300 people from all over the world, a third of them kiwis. The vision of Habitat for Humanity is the elimination of poverty housing worldwide. In Sri Lanka the goal is to build 5000 homes a year in the country, where 40 per cent of the population live in poverty housing. Completing her postal route through central Nelson, there’s nothing to indicate that Lee-Ann Dixon is fast becoming a nationally acclaimed artist. The mother of five and part time postie still manages to fit in time to paint, and the “juggling act” is paying off. Lee-Ann recently returned from successfully displaying her works alongside more than 100 artists at the New Zealand Art Show at the beginning of the month. This is the fifth year the Nelson artist has been involved with the art show, and the second that she has been invited back, rather than having to submit her works for selection. “It was exciting knowing I was part of such a national event, all the artists are supportive and they’re all excited about it. There’s a wonderful art vibe going on,” she says. This year Lee-Ann displayed her works on a single artist wall. The majority of her works were painted silver trays, which Lee-Ann says she began working with because she was “broke” and couldn’t afford canvas. The frugal artist picked up
old trays from the dump, recycling centre, antique shops and was given them by family and friends who knew she was collecting them. “It’s all about breathing new life into old treasures,” she says. Lee-Ann works as a casual postie, completing the walking town route, but she knows her days may be numbered. “Because the volume of mail is declining, our hours are going down, so it’s time to kick start the career in the arts. I still love being a postie, it’s a really good job, but I’m definitely excited about my art.” Lee-Ann says she is confident the change of direction is working in her favour, after 20 of her works sold at the art show. Her main subject matter is inspired by her late mother. “I paint teapots, teacups, New Zealand birds and butterflies, just things that evoke memory. The cup is about nurture, getting together with family. To me everything revolves around a cuppa,” says Lee-Ann. The Nelson mother has also painted portraits of her children, but she says she “can’t sell those”.

Community law has the backing of JP A prominent justice of the peace who worked as a community law worker for six years says if funding was cut to the service it would be tough for it to continue. Last month Nelson Weekly reported on the likely cut in funding to community law services throughout the country, including Nelson. Warwick Blair worked at the Nelson Community Law office until recently and likened to the job to that of a Sherpa. “We are there to lighten the load for those who cannot go on. We are there to show them the path they cannot see. We are there to inspire in them the confidence to try, to walk alongside them but to step back at the summit and allow them to take the success that is theirs. “Most of our clients would attest to our doing just that. If our funding were to be cut, it would significantly impair our ability to deliver that service,” he says. A quote in the original story was incorrectly attached to Warwick’s name, it in fact came from staff solicitor, Jim Ennion. But Warwick says he believes the office is valuable and it performs a much needed service in the community. The Nelson Bays Community Law Service primarily assists with employment disputes and family law, such as in cases involving children from split homes or domestic violence, as well as those facing financial hardship. In the financial year ending June 30 2012, NBCLS served 4052 clients and delivered 5200 hours of service. “The value of our service is that it’s preventative, people can get help early on to avoid it escalating,” says Peter Riley, managing solicitor for Nelson Community Law. The decision on funding is due to be made later this year.

Mum is a swim champ A Nelson mum was the first to swim 3330 lengths of Riverside pool to win a $100 Fresh Choice voucher, but she wasn’t about to use it on a celebratory drink. “I’ve done too much to waste it on that,” says Cheryl Baxter, who last Thursday won the Go for Gold Swim Challenge at Riverside. More than 100 people from 10 to 70 years of age entered the competition and Cheryl says she wasn’t even planning on entering the full 100km grade. “I never thought I’d do it and I only joined the pool a couple of months ago but when I saw I was leading I thought I’d keep going and try to win it.” She swam 220 lengths on Thursday to take the win but the competition is ongoing with most of the prizes still up for grabs.

Sewing machines go to community groups Seven years ago the Nelson Women’s Centre threw out its remaining sewing machines after they kept breaking down, but today it will host its first sewing workshop since then, thanks to a local group. Patches of Tasman held a successful patchwork and quilting symposium in April and used the funds it raised to donate sewing machines to Nelson Women’s Centre and the Victory Community Centre. Carrie Mozena, of the women’s centre, says the machines mean the centre can host sewing classes giving local women practical skills. The class, called ‘from op shop to top shop’ begins today and will see eight women take part. “We were rapt, when Patches of Tasman came to us with the idea I said ‘oh my god, yes’. It is such a practical skill and it’s fun and it’s creative.” Sponsorship from local and nation-

port from Bernina NZ, to acknowledge their appreciation by donating new sewing machines to the Nelson Women's Centre and to the Victory Community Centre to assist these groups in teaching and developing sewing skills.

This experience as an educator has been balanced with thirty years as a working hairdresser, never losing the sight and feel of her profession, with a loyal group of clients who are delighted that she has returned to the salon environment. To top it off, for the last 10 years Cherie has made

FC Nelson Sprig & Fern ended Saturday with a three point buffer and one hand on the Nelson first division football title. A 4-1 win over inner-club rivals FC Nelson Fuji Xerox has lifted the Steve Bignall-coached side onto 31 competition points, three clear of second place with only three rounds remaining. The win also sees FC Nelson Sprig & Fern hold a 15 goal advantage over FC Nelson Fuji Xerox. Kerry Eggers got FC Nelson Fuji Xerox off to the best possible start on a damp Guppy Park when his free kick made its way into the back of the net. But it wasn't long before FC Nelson Sprig & Fern equalized, with another goal from a set-piece. Solomon Island international Henry Fa'arado's corner found Ant Sonneman free at the far post following a prolonged spell on attack. Heyden Nunn then made it 2-1 just before halftime, when a wayward goal kick from a defender landed at his feet. The young forward kept calm under the pressure and cooly slotted the ball into the back of the net. FC Nelson Sprig & Fern, buoyed by its late goal, kicked into another gear in the second half with Henry and Davi Goncales Maciel causing hav-

Neil Connell had another tireless display in the middle of the park and was the pick of the FC Nelson Sprig & Fern players. Barring a surprise loss to bottom of the table Nelson College first XI, the Nelson Pine Industries first division football title could be won next weekend. FC Nelson Sprig & Fern manager Rick Gower was under no illusion that this weekend's clash will be an important one for the club, especially as it comes just one week after the schoolboys secured their first win of the season. "It was obviously a big result for us yesterday but if we get a win next weekend against Nelson College then it's game over," says Rick. "We're quite confident that we've got one hand on it already. Nelson College have been unfortunate this year with the way results have gone. They're not a bad side so it will be interesting." This is the first season FC Nelson has played teams as a collective, since the amalgamation of Nelson United, Nelson Metro and Nelson City. Both FC Nelson sides still have a bye round to come, with FC Nelson Sprig & Fern's falling on the final round of the season. Local Nelson Dance team ORIGIN has been named to represent NZ at the the Hip Hop Unite World Hip Hop Champs in the Netherlands in October 2012. ORIGIN are from the wider Nelson/Tasman are the only South Island team to be selected.

Nelson teams excel at netball development tournament

Nelson Under 17, Under 15 and Under 13 teams had the perfect record at the Nelson Development Tournament played at Saxton Stadium on Sunday. Each team played Marlborough, Motueka and West Coast to record some impressive wins. The Under 17 team under the guidance of Faye Eden completely dominated their opposition. Nelson’s first game was against Marlborough Under 15A (with Marlborough unable to field a Under 17 Development team the Under 15 A were given entry) and they dominated in all facets of play, winning 42-25. Goal attack, Abbey Frankin was impressive in her work load – not only did she shoot accurately and do the majority of the shooting she pulled in a couple of intercepts and some great tip ball. While her partner in the circle, Brianna Davis struggled to find her target early on, she soon found her rhythm to convert well. Emma Deighton and Hannah Davenhill were a formidable defensive unit, they fed off one another and got better and better as the tournament progressed. Centre, Jessie Matthews does nothing flash but is a solid wee player who works tirelessly. Jessie’s workload did not go un-noticed as she was named in the tournament team along with Hannah and Emma. Nelson defeated West Coast 39-20
and when given the opportunity to test the waters in unaccustomed positions against Motueka, they rose to the challenge to record a commanding 53 – 16 win. The Under 15 coach, Sarah Rankin was totally stoked with her charges – their improvement from selection has been immense, both as individuals and as a team. Nelson recorded convincing wins – 41-24 over Motueka, 40-24 over Marlborough and 42-19 over West Coast. The girls made a positive start and built on that performance in the following games. Shooter, Ariana Te KawaWiremu, wing attack Hana Morris and goal defence, Hannah Taylor all impressed and were selected in the tournament team. Anika Paton also impressed after getting a late call up to the team – after getting over the shock of being handed the C bib she displayed great vision through court and put in some superior feeds to her shooters. Under 13 coach, Nicky Kenny was absolutely delighted with her girls – they just got better at every outing. Nelson defeated Marlborough 30-15, they backed one another up through court, pressured the ball carrier and shooters Shaunagh Hailes-Paku and Demi Woolley converted with ease.

Centre, Lauren Hippolite was into everything, grabbing six clean intercepts and numerous deflections she linked beautifully while Emily Milson did a power of work at the centre pass. Nelson accounted for West Coast to the tune of 39 -16 and although they were not as fluent as they were in the earlier game they played some enterprising netball. Aimee Book had an outstanding game at goal attack, she shouldered a hefty load through court and netted a number of long shots. Demi impressed to score 16 from18 in only 20 minutes on court. In their final game Nelson defeated Motueka 41-12 leaving their best until last Nelson won the final quarter 15-1. They backed up on defence, had trust in one another and had the confidence to let the ball go. The defensive unit of Olivia Keenan, Chelsea Neame and Chelsea McManaway was astonishing with centre Lauren added to the mix, Motueka could not find a way into their shooters. Shaunagh, Lauren, Emily, Chelsea McManaway and Kiara TinarauPhilips were all named in the tournament team. Annie Ewers-Kennedy was named as the umpire of the tournament.

Olympic and Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Valerie Adams is to be guest speaker at this year’s Nelson Sports Awards. Valerie will visit Nelson on 28 November as part of the annual awards celebration and everyone is invited to hear her speak on her London 2012 experience. Sport Tasman, the host of the Nelson Sports Awards, is looking forward to welcoming Val at the awards ceremony to be held for the first time at the Annesbrook Church complex. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the people in our community to get up close to and be inspired by this sporting legend and listen to her speak about her experiences," says Rita Merriman, events manager with Sport Tasman. The night will celebrate local sporting champions as well as the country’s Olympians, following on from their successes at the London 2012 Olympics. Rita says each year we are proud of the accomplishments of our local athletes on the national and international stage and this event allows us to give them the recognition they deserve. Nominations for the awards are now open. Sport Tasman welcomes nominations for Nelson sports people who have achieved in their chosen sport during the past year, as well as for people who are deserving of recognition of their lifetime contribution to sport.

• Four container vessels in two days at the start of the week kept the port and stevedores very busy, a log ship and another general carrier kept them going, whilst seventeen fishing vessel movements around the port are suggestive of a successful week for the local companies. • How far away is spring, and what does it mean to the man in the boat, or woman? Winds are unpredictable, their strength varies, and people are often surprised at the voracity at which the wind can blow for short or long periods of time. • If you are caught out what are some of the best things you can do for survival. 1- Do nothing – often a good option if you anchor is holding, your boat shelter is warm and dry ( don’t forget to let the people ashore waiting for you know what you are up to) 2- Weigh anchor and start slow steaming home. Remember in heavy weather, short steep waves, to keep your speed down. Pounding your vessel can cause injury to you and your crew and damage your boat. 3- Keep the water out of your boat. Stability is crucial and your bilges must be dry. (There is no better pump than a frightened man with a bucket so don’t forget to involve your crew) 4- Is there a closer alternative port, or shelter you can get to? 5- If you need it – call for help. Better to be safe than to be sorry If in doubt – don’t go out
