School to slash staff Andrew Board Salisbury School is to shred up to 12 staff members before Christmas, says its principal. The move comes as the government pushes to get more special needs students into mainstream schooling, dropping the number of students enrolled at the school. Salisbury School, in Richmond, can cater for 80 special needs students from all over New Zealand. Currently it has 68 pupils on its roll but principal Brenda Ellis says only 45 are enrolled for next year; the drop in numbers means between 10 and 12 residential staff will be made redundant. The teaching staff will remain unaffected. Brenda says the school is looking towards a bright future, but with more students being integrated into mainstream schools, they will have to look at how
they adapt to support other schools. The government policy to bring more special needs students into mainstream schooling was started around a decade ago by the Labour government. Maitai School is another specialist special needs school, but its principal Diane Whyte says its roll is growing and the school is evolving to supply support to other schools. “At the moment we are providing support for five students in mainstream schools and we can see that growing. It’s an area where we can offer our specialist skills,” she says. Brenda was upbeat about the future of Salisbury; she says it’s never nice to lose staff but the school was remaining positive. She says next year’s roll could still grow. Redundancies will be made before the Christmas break “so families have some certainty”, says Brenda.

School’s out
Nelson College for Girls year 13 student Ella Kilpatrick takes a dive off the Wakefield Quay wharf in her uniform with fellow students to celebrate the end of the school year. Photo: Andrew Board. Phillip Rollo Nelson College for Girls has a history of traditions spanning more than 100 years. But the latest crop of year 13 students made sure they signed off their schooling year with a brand new one. A group of around 80 students leaped off Wakefield Quay into the ocean in their full school uniform
last Thursday, signalling the end of their secondary school education at Nelson College for Girls. Nelson College for Girls student Ella Kilpatrick says the idea was sprung by one of the students and wordof-mouth spread it throughout the school following the senior prize giving. It is hoped the new tradition will be taken up by future school leavers
and continue for years to come. “It’s something that’s not extreme and rebels against the school and will get you in trouble,” says Ella. “Hopefully people will follow.” The tradition is made famous by Wellington Girls’ College. Year 12 students fling themselves into Wellington’s waterfront to symbolise the last year of wearing their school uniform.

Rai Valley’s bid for show sponsor Businesses lining up to sponsor an iconic A&P Show won’t get a much better deal than paying just a dollar for the naming rights. That’s what’s currently on offer, but organisers of the Rai Valley A&P Show will hope for a much bigger price tag from the highest bidder which will come away with sponsorship rights to next March’s event. The show, struggling to attract a major sponsor, has taken to Trade Me in an effort to attract a business wanting to gain profile and align themselves with a respected community event. The reserve is just a dollar and at the time of print on Monday afternoon, no one had yet bid. Show secretary and treasurer Lina Gargiulo says they have no expectation about how much they will get from the listing. The listing states: “The Rai Val-

ley A&P Show is an exciting marketing opportunity for your organisation to raise its profile in this prospering rural community. In addition to publicity opportunities from signage, news coverage and community attendance to events you sponsor, your involvement allows you to link your company’s image with a popular community event in our region. “Without your support the Rai Valley A&P Show cannot exist. The benefits offered to the festival sponsors reflect the importance of the sponsorship role.” The show attracts between 3000 and 5000 people each year, according to the listing. The auction is due to close on Sunday night, November 20, so businesses keen on a sponsorship deal should login and search Rai Valley on the Trade Me website.

Getting a taste of Growables Around 4500 people filed under the windmill for the Nelson Growables Garden Fair on Sunday, an event that proved to be “the busiest day of the season” for more than one stall-holder. Organisers say they were extremely happy with the enthusiasm of the crowd as the Nelson sun chipped in with a fine show. “We are very happy with a really good day, fantastic weather and the whole event went really well,” says Jo Reilly. The park was packed and the Energy Centre was transformed into ‘The Garden Shed’ for the ever “popular” interactive stalls and demonstrations. The fair was the culmination of a whole week of activities dedicated to gardens around Nelson and Tasman. “The Garden Week was introduced this year and it is intended to continue and

build,” adds Jo. Businesses and private homes opened up throughout the week providing techniques to get the best out of your garden, be it bearded irises in Richmond or urban fruit trees in Atawhai. Many of the stall holders were run off their feet from sales, conversations or home gardeners seeking advice. “It was probably the busiest day of our season,” says Miles Gwynne of Garden Organics. “We do a couple of other garden shows, but the Nelson Growables is such a good event because you get some fantastic conversations and make contacts with local people who are growing good things.” On the day over 4500 came to the Garden Fair but close to 9000 green thumbs left.

Bike club hosts poker run
Before and after of the section of cliffs on Rocks Rd that is being fixed up. Photo: Rosie Thomsen.
Reinforcment for Rocky Rd Work is underway to strengthen a section of cliff at Rocks Rd. The cliff had been breaking away, exposing a residents driveway but New Zealand Transport Authority has since contracted local firm Kidson Construction to erect concrete barriers to stabilise the cliff. Anchors from the wall have been put into the rock with the space behind the walls to be filled in, according to a Kidson
spokesperson. Nelson Weekly spoke with the owners of the property several weeks ago who at the time said they were in talks with NZTA over the issue but didn’t want to comment further. Nelson City Council say the issue did not involve them as it was over a road owned and managed by NZTA. Kidson’s say the work is due for completion late next week.

Toys needed for Founders fair The success of last year’s inaugural toy fair was fantastic news for organisers, but it also leaves them with the task of trying to find just as many donated toys for its sequel. That’s where the people of Nelson come in, says Michael Fox of the Stoke/Tahunanui Rotary Club. “We really need to get our toy collection going now, so are hoping Nelson folk will empty their toy boxes and closets and drop any toys to any Summit Real Estate office in Richmond, Stoke or Nelson or to the windmill at Founders.” The Toy Fair is held at Founders Heritage Park immediately after the Nelson Santa Parade, on
Sunday December 4, and gives parents, grandparents or brothers and sisters an opportunity to buy some toys ahead of Christmas. Styled on the wildly popular Founders book fair, Michael says the idea of the fair is to give people an opportunity to buy good quality Christmas presents for kids without breaking the bank. Maria says the fair is fantastic for Founders and she would like to see it get the same great turn out it enjoyed last year. Toys can be dropped off at the windmill from 10am to 4.30pm daily or to have toys picked up from your house call 547 6366.
NEWS IN BRIEF MEET THE CANDIDATES: Tahunanui is hosting local candidates for this month’s general election. The ‘meet the candidates evening’ is being hosted by the Tahunanui Business Association and the Tahunanui Community Centre tonight, Tuesday November 15, at 7pm. The meeting is being held at the Tahunanui School Hall at 69 Muritai St. In attendance will be Paul Hufflet (Act), Doug Stevens (United Future), Nick Smith (National), Maryan Street (Labour) and Aaryn Barlow (Greens). GARIN’S A WINNER: Students from Garin College have come first in the NZ’s Next Top Engineering Scientist competition. One hundred and seventeen teams took part from 65 schools all around the country. The team from Garin College – made up of students Benedict Morrissey, Matthew Ruffell and Michael Shanaher – won $6000 and the 2011 title and Pullan Prize. POOLS NOW OPEN: Nayland Pool is now open until March 2012. The pools are open until 7pm every night for 20 weeks instead of the previous 17 weeks. Work over the winter included repairing leaks that they hope will reduce at least 50 per cent of the leaks. Plans for all sorts of fun over the summer include aquaruns, family fun days, Kori Xmas party, wave raves and bomb competitions. The pools also have an action planned holiday programme. PLAYCENTRE OPEN DAY: There’s a brand new Playcentre in Stoke - next to the Stoke school at 4 Ranui Rd and this Saturday they are hosting an open day. Come for a sausage sizzle and have look around on Saturday 19 November between 5 and 7pm. Bring the kids and whanau, have fun and find out how you and Playcentre can help your child learn. REST HOMES: Discover The 5 Things You Really Must Know In Order To Choose The One Most Suitable For You Or A Loved One You no doubt realise that the reality of rest home care in New Zealand sits somewhere in between here: • •
The horror stories you occasionally see in the media, and What’s shown in the glossy marketing brochures (while most rest homes are actually pretty good, it’s just that some can fall a little short of what the brochures suggest)
With the truth sitting somewhere in the middle, I dearly want you to have: (1) the tools to deal with the issues involved and (2) the information needed to make an informed choice. I would like you to have these because I have: • • •
Seen the frustration caused in the eternal search for the ‘perfect’ rest home Consoled the upset family who need to look for a rest home for either their mother or father Witnessed the distress of people who have been told they can no longer look after themselves and must leave their home
So over a cup of tea or coffee and during a 25-minute chat I would be delighted to let you in on: The 5 Things You Really Ought To Know In Order To Make The Decision That Best Suits Your Circumstances In less than half-an-hour, discover… * The 1 thing (a crucial first step) many people tend to overlook * 5 tell tale signs this might not be the right rest home for you * 5 big clues this might be the right rest home for you * A helpful check list: the 10 compulsory questions you must ask when visiting a rest home (don’t leave without getting the answers) * How to save time by correctly filling in an aged residential care subsidy application form on the first attempt I can speak with authority on this subject as I am a registered nurse and have worked with people aged 65 and older my entire career, including in a public hospital setting. And here’s my promise to you: when you visit you are under no requirement, pressure or duty to choose the rest home I happen to manage (Otumarama). So while it’s top of your mind, CALL ME RIGHT AWAY on 021 351 135 or 547 1822 and lock in a time to come and see me. This 25-minute information session is free, by the way. My very best wishes,
Bev Foster RN (Registered Nurse), BN (Bachelor of Nursing) P.S. If nothing else, you will save yourself the 2-3 hours of research needed to get “up to speed” with this subject. So call me now on 021 351 135 or 547 1822.

Locals survive scooter challenge They survived, two of their scooters did not. But after a couple of weeks to reflect on the Survivor Scooter Challenge, they promise they will be back for 2012. The Survivor Scooter Challenge took 10 riders from Marlborough’s back country across Nelson’s toughest tracks and to the rugged West Coast – all on scooters worth just a couple of hundred dollars. The ride aims to raise money and awareness for Project KPH, a charity for ill children, while at the same time giving riders the time of their life. The riders collected more than $700 during the trip, making a total of $4000 for the charity. Two scooters didn’t made it to Greymouth, breaking down after being unable to handle the tough terrain.
Special challenges during the trip included a time trial and race at the Tahuna Pro Karts and playing a game of Scooter Soccer on a private airstrip on the hills overlooking Motueka and the bay. The Ewing Poultry challenge involved riders having to attach an egg to their scooters and keep it in one piece while traversing the hardest leg of the trip, the Mackley River track from Buller Gorge through to Denniston, north of Westport, says organiser Jason Monopoli. “This track also required the riders to make use of the natural materials available in order to carry their bikes across the swift flowing Mackley River, mortality rate of the eggs was high.” Overall the Scooter Survivor 2011 winner was Lawry Baigent, with the Riders Choice award going to Leah Evans.
TWIGHT DELIGHT: Bailey Hanakerr and Shay Anne Hall hug ‘Stanley Brook Oh What A Fright’ (or Boo for short) at the Auckland Point Twilight Fiesta last Friday night. Pony petting wasn’t the only attraction, with kids enjoying bouncy castles and the ever popular plate smashing game while adults enjoyed the White Elephant and food stalls. Thanks to the “the wonderful support from a good crowd,” Auckland point will upgrade their adventure playground, adding a new slide and buddy swing, says principal Sonya Hockley. It is the first time Auckland Point has held their Gala in the evening and due to the “great atmosphere” it won’t be the last, she says. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.

Awareness drive for depressed mothers Andrew Board
Ali, 4, plays with his toy car while his mother Claire Nichols watches on. Claire suffered from postnatal depression for six weeks after having Ali. She is now the chair of the Nelson Postnatal Depression Support Network. Photo: Andrew Board.
Watching her four year-old son play with his toys, Nelson mother Claire Nichols couldn’t look happier, but for six weeks after his birth she says she felt “insane” as she battled postnatal depression. “I just couldn’t snap out of it and I’d look at him and think ‘I don’t particularly like you’. I didn’t say anything to anyone but it just happened over a couple of days and one day I just put him in the pushchair and went out walking because I just needed to get out of the house. I walked to a friend’s house and I freaked out when I got there and that’s when I realised something was wrong,” she says. With two children already, Claire never thought she would get postnatal depression and even thought women who did just needed to “snap out of it”. But after her six weeks of torment, Claire is now a passionate voice for the cause, aiming to raise awareness of the depression, and is now the chairperson of the Postnatal Depression Support Network in Nelson. “I’ve heard just horrendous stories about women who have been isolated and then they have to cope with it. Some of them don’t get help, or over time someone may pick it up, but there will be a lot of people that will have to try and work through it.
I think a lot out there do have postnatal depression but don’t have their support networks around them.” Claire says she was lucky, while her depression was at its height she had the baby’s father, her mother and friends there to help her through it. But she says the contact from a support worker was what helped her break through. “Just being able to talk to them on the phone was great because they knew what I was going through and what it was like. That was a great feeling.” This week is Postnatal Depression Awareness Week and Claire says there is still a lot unknown about it. One in five New Zealand mothers get postnatal depression and one in six fathers. Claire says the Nelson support network now has a website and Facebook page for mothers who perhaps aren’t sure. “It can happen to everybody, you’ll find a lot of people that will know someone who have been through it. It’s important they realise they aren’t crazy and can get help,” she says. The group is also holding a fundraiser tomorrow night at the Freehouse. They are screening the movie Babies from 7pm. The film follows four babies in Namibia, Mongolia, Japan and the United States in their early years. To book tickets or for more information about the network call 548 3555.

Nayland dux creates school history No one in Nayland College’s history has ever solely claimed both the Dux and Palmer awards, until now. Kimberley Savill had already passed NCEA Level 3 with excellence and passed three scholarship papers when she was in just year 12, so there’s no surprise that she is struggling to find room for all of her awards now that she was crowned Nayland College’s top academic and top all-round student for 2011. But finding room and time is something Kimberly has a bit of a knack for. Kimberley is the student representative on the board of trustees, is the reserve in the New Zealand secondary school debating team, she is a member of the Nelson cadets, she plays piano and clarinet in the concert band, orchestra and clarinet quartet, she is a peer mediator, she co-led the school environment group and she plays summer soccer. “I kind of lose track of it all really. I pretty much have no free lunches or anything in school time,” she says. Kimberley also received the top award for academic excellence in classics, psychology, physics and biology, on top of the level 3 awards for French, English and chemistry from last year. Even though she had the grades to graduate early, Kimberley says she had no idea what to study, so it just made sense to stay at school. “I’m really glad I came back. Year 13 has been great and I wouldn’t have wanted to miss it.” Kimberley will be studying a bachelor of science at Victoria University next year.

Exhibition unveils Nelson’s world-leading science institute
Cawthron community educator Jo Thompson puts the final touches on the new exhibition at the Nelson Provincial Museum which opened on Saturday. Photo: Andrew Board.
For 90 years the Cawthron Institute has been a leader in its field, drawing praise the world over and putting Nelson of the scientific map. But for many Nelsonians the work carried out by the institute, based in the Wood, has been a mystery – not anymore. To celebrate its 90th birthday the Cawthron Institute and the Nelson Provincial Museum have teamed up to show the history of the Cawthron and what it works on in a new interactive exhibition at the Museum, called Extraordinary Frontiers; Cawthron Science, Innovation and Mysteries from our Environment. The exhibition was officially opened on Saturday and will run until April 22, 2012. It features a mix of information, interactive mysteries to solve and displays a range of projects it works on. Community educator Jo Thompson says
the exhibition highlights the diversity of the institute in a fun way. “It’s been an amazing process and we are expecting thousands of people to come and check it out, it’s a very exciting project.” The Cawthron Institute is known for leading scientific research in fields as broad as food quality, aquaculture, water quality and bio-security. The exhibition was paid for by the Cawthron Trust Board and the Museum. Museum chief executive Peter Millward says the relationship between the two organisations has been strong since the Institute was first founded. “This exhibition offers a really good insight into some really significant science being undertaken by the Cawthron. Visually, the exhibition is stunning,” he says. Entry to the exhibition is free for all Nelson and Tasman residents.

• Three bulk carriers, (two log ships and a fertiliser vessel), five container ships (two over 200m in length), a tanker, a big car carrier (200m LOA), a tug boat for the slipway. The dredge Kawatiri left for Westport after a successful campaign in the port, and eight large fishing vessel movements kept the berths occupied and the stevedores busy during the last week. • Tuesday night saw a different sight as about eighty girls from Nelson Girls College jumped into the harbour from the Coastal berth to celebrate the end of their school years. I would imagine it was a daunting feat as the tide was a fair way out and the water reasonably cold. Well done girls, we wish you the best for shaping the Nation of the future. • I would like to thank the yachtsmen from the Tasman Bay Cruising club that interrupted their race on Wednesday night to wait outside for the tanker to exit The Cut. Whilst these interruptions are rare it is good to know the race members understand the reasons and cooperate for the sake of safety. The consequences of a collision or grounding with the tanker are all too prevalent in the news at present. Thanks again. • Several paddle-boarders have been seen out and about in this settled weather – please remember to have your board tethered to yourself and carry a PFD (Personal Floatation Device…preferably one worn). Happy boating this summer, Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

A Wii hand for stroke victims
Two new pieces of equipment donated to Nelson Hospital Assessment Treatment and Rehabilitation Ward are hitting the mark with stroke patients. A basketball hoop and backboard, donated by Nelson Red Cross as part of their on-going support for the AT&R Ward, now feature in the courtyard that has had Red Cross support since it was developed in 2003. Fraser Benson, manager of Red Cross Tasman District, says this donation follows a long association with the hospital and is part of the Red Cross mission to improve the lives of vulnerable people. A Nintendo Wii was also donated by a patient who suffered a stroke earlier this year and wanted to thank staff and provide another tool for rehabilitation. Top turnout for Top Team A record number of teams took to Saxton Field to see who was number one in the third annual Bowater Motor Group Top Team. The event runs in three heats with Sunday’s second heat at Saxton Field. Other heats are in Motueka and Murchison. Nelson team Abyss Challengers won the heat, earning the right to feature in the final at Moutere Hills on December 11. Organiser Hayden Bryant, of Sport Tasman, says the event was a huge success. “We had three more teams than last year, no major injuries and everyone had a great time, so it was an outstanding day.” Nelson Intermediate won the junior section in the event, which Rory Fleming, of Stoke, balances a bucket full of water at featured six new games from last the Bowater Top Team on Sunday. TO THE EDITOR
Thanks you for the story about the inclusion of a Maori seat on council. I am very pleased to see this development. Living in the here-and-now, it is difficult for us to maintain a sense of history and perspective, but it must be done for the sake of fairness. In the scheme of things, it wasn’t really so long ago that Europeans came to these shores and abused the people they found already living here. Apart from the violence, years of institutionalised discrimination ensued. Regardless of what Maori may or may not have done to any previous inhabitants, let the discord and alienation stop here. A dedicated seat on any city council for Maori makes sense. Bill Leonard, Ngati Pakeha, Nelson. Nelson council is staging a fait accompli over its decision to host the FIFA Under 20 World Cup. Council has already decided to propose being a host city at a cost of two and a half million dollars to ratepayers. But council is required, under the Local Government Act, to first put this issue out to consultation, not only through the annual plan process, but in a Long-Term Community Plan as well. After losing three court cases over lack of consultation, council seems intent on landing the ratepayers with additonal legal costs by ignoring due process. Yours sincerely, Dan McGuire, Nelson. In 1981 I went to a couple of rugby tests. A bit hard to get into. There were thousands of people (many I knew) protesting about the Apartheid system in South Africa. My NZ Oxford dictionary describes Apartheid as “a policy of racial segregation separating Europeans from non-Europeans”. While there can be much debate over the word “separating”, and what it means, I think New Zealand is being driven into an “Apartheid” type system by a radical few who think preferenc-
es must given on the colour of our skin or how much ancestral blood is in our bodies. Are we not all “Kiwi’s”? For the people of Nelson to be railroaded into such a system is deplorable and an insult to our local Maori population. I am sure they are disgusted at the underhand way the decision to allocate a Maori Ward seat has been made and would prefer to see everyone given the opportunity to support or otherwise decide upon such major decision. Once again the arrogance of the NCC has reared its ugly head... It’s time some were sacked. The petition demanding a poll be taken is now circulating – everyone who believes in equality should sign. Errol Millar, Nelson. Back in 2008 I lead the debate on the Trafalgar Park upgrade, which lead to us hosting the Rugby World Cup in Nelson. That decision also had a large vocal group opposed to it based on two grounds; firstly, that the process was wrong and the decision was rushed and should have formed part of the annual plan consultation, not a special process on its own. And secondly, that it was waste of money upgrading the park. The perceived public perception was that the council was not listening, rushing due process and blindly wasting money and so, amongst much letter writing from aggrieved rate payers how council was not following process and rates will go up, a petition was started against council’s decision. The petitioners gathered almost 2000 signatures. So not much has changed. Now, like then, council has made a perceived unpopular decision, but we had the courage of our convictions to stand by what we thought was right and doing the job we were elected to do, and I’m sure people would agree we were proved right about the park upgrade and the public majority are pleased that we didn’t listen to a loud minority. Unlike the Trafalgar Park decision, this situation differs in that if the petitioners get only 1500 signatures we will have a binding poll so that the public can vote on the issue, so everyone can rest easy that if truly the public at large do not agree with this decision then the process we have undertaken clearly allows for consultation and democracy to be served. Aldo Miccio, Mayor of Nelson City.

Saxton Oval Pavilion Celebrating the Opening
Tasman District Council supporting regional development PROUD TO BE THE MAIN CONTRACTOR FOR THE NEW SAXTON OVAL PAVILION The Team at Scott Construction would like to congratulate the Nelson City Council on their exciting new sports facility.
After several years of planning and nine months of construction, the new Saxton Oval Pavilion threw open its doors last Friday to an outstanding reception. The ribbon cutting took place at 10.30; amongst the attendees were Nelson City Council Mayor, Aldo Miccio, and Tasman District Council Deputy Mayor, Tim King. The new facility will be home to representative cricket, athletics and football, and the spacious and modern interior, complete with
a bar and kitchen, will also be available for functions and meetings. The striking and innovative design came from the Nelson based firm, Arthouse Architecture. Brian Riley, the chief architect on the project, says that the inspiration for the design came from the sports themselves; the shape of the building is a reflection of the athletics oval and cricket oval that it overlooks. Built to international requirements and regulations, the intention is to

Saxton Oval Pavilion Celebrating the Opening have high profile sport held at the pavilion. The cricket oval meets NZ Cricket’s guidelines for first class matches, as does the building itself, which has also been designed to meet all the requirements for athletics meetings and National League football competitions. Councillor Pete Rainey, of Joint Portfolio Holder Community Services, says “The iconic architectural design and construction has taken into account the shared nature of the facilities, and the particular needs of the three sporting codes. When we see this building on televised games in future we’ll know it’s Nelson.” Justin Candish, the main contractor from Scott Construction, says they are extremely proud of the building; “We would like to congratulate the combined councils and cricket and athletics on their vision for the site. We really enjoy a challenge and wanted to be involved with this project from its conception. It’s not often a project
of this complexity and profile comes along.” He acknowledges the subcontractors and suppliers for their expertise and support, and also gives credit to the good working relationship with Arthouse Architecture and the CDT Consultants for helping deliver the project on time and on budget. Scott Construction was founded in 1970 by Kevin Scott who currently holds coownership with Justin. The building houses international standard facilities, with covered walkways extending from each end to the function space in the centre, which overlooks the football field and cricket pitch. Additional spectator seating is provided in the form of ramps and terraced seating. There are three unisex changing rooms, two of which can be split in half to provide separate areas, the third for referees. The facility is expected to be a draw card for many international sporting events.

Gr wing Things
With Robyn Hollis
I can’t believe that another two weeks has passed since our last chat. Maybe this is because it is such a busy time of the year in our gardens, or it may be that Growing Things could also refer to the growth and birth of my first grandchild! Yes, I am allowed to be excited and I am allowed to share this wonderful news! Baby Benjamin arrived six weeks early and still weighed in at a healthy 5lb 2oz. I am off to Christchurch early tomorrow for my first visit so the next column could well be written from there. On to garden things….. The photo this week is my lovely Clematis H F Young. I love it when the Clematis start to flower. First the montanas, which are glorious in October, followed by the hybrids and the alpines. To have all three in your garden ensures flowering for several months as many of the hybrids flower in spring and again in autumn – good value plants.

There are some tricks to ensure success with these sometimes fickle plants: • The key to ensuring your plants survive is to build up a good strong root system with plenty of growth buds under the ground. • Soil is critical – it should be well drained, moisture retentive and rich – the addition of well rotted compost, sheep pellets and maybe some peat will ensure a good mix. • The clematis should be planted deeply up to the first nodes or with 15 cms of stem
buried. The roots need to be kept cool. He gave a couple of good tips that you may • Mound the soil up around the stem for need to keep: 50-60cms out to protect the lower growth 1. Q& A Not sure who sent these in but one from Stoke first: Q: Can you please tell me how to keep my newly purchased Hydrangeas blue and pink. There is some confusion in our family about this. A: To keep Hydrangeas pink use a side dressing of lime. To keep them blue apply an acid side dressing in the form of ammonium sulphate. White hydrangeas should not receive either. When planting a bed of these lovely things it pays to keep the colours separate because of this or plant them in different spots in the garden. From Brightwater: Q: I have been told that as I have a large clay area in my garden I should apply Gypsum. What is it and would lime give the same result? A: Gypsum is a naturally occurring mineral and consists mainly of calcium sulphate, which, when applied to clay soils, causes the soil particles to clump together and so lets the ground drain better as well as letting in air which is so important for promoting healthy growth. Lime has a similar result but is slower and is not good to use around acid loving plants. Gypsum does not alter the PH balance of your soil and so can be safely used in all areas of the garden. It is a good calcium source for camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons. That’s all for now – off to Christchurch.

Volunteer managers ‘bond communities together’
Locals who manage volunteers have been told they help bond communities together at a special morning tea last week. Vanisa Dhiru, executive director at Volunteer New Zealand, hailed the work of people who manage volunteers for groups such as Neighbourhood Support, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Men’s Shed, Red Cross and St John. The meeting was to celebrate International Volunteer Manager Day, on November 10, and Vanisa says it was a great opportunity to celebrate the work of volunteer managers.
“Often these people are forgotten about but it’s because of them we have volunteers and volunteers contribute a huge amount to the country. In fact volunteers are responsible for 4.9 per cent of New Zealand’s GDP and 34 per cent of people in this country volunteer,” she says. Vanisa then spoke to the managers and says their work should be praised by the community. “Diamonds are people in the community that bind people together – there are a few diamonds here today,” she says. Around 30 people gathered for the celebration.
Leggy catch for boy Fishing at Wakefield Quay, Nelson boy Callum Elvy, 13, was hoping to take home some big, juicy fish for dinner. Instead he ended up with a rather slimy octopus. Callum reeled in the octopus on Sunday while fishing with his family. He says he thought he’d landed some seaweed when he first started to pull it in. “It was heavier than usual and it was pretty cool to see it when we got it on the wharf,” he says. A nearby fisherman was impressed with the catch and says after years of fishing at the wharf he’d never seen an octopus caught there before. “It’s quite big too,” he says. The octopus was taken home for Sunday dinner. “I reckon it will taste like squid,” Callum said.

Rain dampens Tigers speedway hopes Last week Dale Ewers said the Nelson Tigers needed to realize that just turning up wouldn’t guarantee victory over the less-fancied Canterbury Glen Eagles. He was right. With a slippery Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway track giving drivers a hard time, Canterbury’s Nick Selfe seemed invincible in trying circumstances and led race one early, as the Tigers fell one by one. Nick crossing just under ten seconds ahead of Dale – the only Nelson driver to finish inside the top four. Canterbury Glen Eagles headed down the Lewis Pass with an unlikely win after rain meant races two and three were cancelled. But the Tigers will be seeking revenge when the second leg of the McCall Trophy hits Woodford Glen, Christchurch, this Saturday. Dale took out the superstock open race, which only featured one of the visiting Christchurch drivers. Nelson’s next meeting is on Saturday, November 26, when the Tasman Thunder stockcar team hosts Greymouth’s Grizzlies.

Dun Mountain trail opens, paving way for bikers Jonathan McKeown The newly revamped Dun Mountain Trail has received the big tick from Nelson’s mountainbikers after the official opening on Saturday. The 38km Trail, from the Maitai Dam to the Brook, is a “world class” trail that will help to bolster Nelson Tourism, says National Cycleway project manager Jonathan Kennett. That sentiment was backed up by the stacks of riders who have already taken to the track. Experienced rider Chris Wood was using the trail prior to the upgrade which added a new bridge and new facilities including toilets, signs and information boards, but it is the improvement to the track itself which impressed Chris the most. “The track be-
forehand was pretty full-on and full of hard riding,” says Chris. Not that it would bother experienced riders, but the upgrade means that more people now have access to the area. “Which will encourage more use and that’s really positive for Nelson,” says Chris. Not only will the new trail attract people to the area, it will also serve to showcase the natural beauty of the region. “The scenery on the Dun Mountain Trail is truly world class. Early sections give glimpses of the Waimea plains and more extensive views can also be enjoyed back across Nelson and beyond to Tasman Bay and Abel Tasman National Park,” says Jonathan. A trip up the track will not only take you close to the centre of New Zealand, Jonathan says it will make you “feel like you’re on top of the world.”

Teammates set to square off at awards
Nelson rowers and teammates Scott Green and Mitchell Horner will square off in the Sport Tasman Sportsperson of the Year awards after they were both nominated for Junior Sportsman of the Year. Photo: Phillip Rollo. Phillip Rollo Only centimeters have separated Scott Green and Mitchell Horner since they took up rowing five years ago. The Nelson College duo have won the under-18 double sculls and the under-18 quadruple sculls at the prestigious Maadi Cup and finished fourth at the Junior World Championship in Eton, England, where they were half of the New Zealand junior quadruple scull. But for the first time since their rugby days, Scott and Mitchell will be pitched against each other at the NZCT Nelson Sportsperson of the Year awards, following their

selection as finalists in the Junior Sportsman of the Year category. But how do you separate two athletes that have competed as a team for five years, sitting just centimeters away from each other in the same boat, busting their gut for each other and their success? Well if you ask them, the answer is; “you can’t.” The pair are also finalists for Junior Sports Team of the Year in the Nelson College cox quad; which was more expected than the individual accolade. “I thought we’d have a shot at the team one but I didn’t think we’d be selected for the individual stuff. We’re generally working together,” says Scott. “I don’t know how they’d separate us because we’ve done the same stuff. It’d be hard to pick the winner.” Scott and Mitchell make up a fourstrong category that also features New Zealand senior mens 200m and 400m sprint champion Alex Jordan and motorcyclist Hamish Harwood. Every other category has three finalists. Scott says it is great to be named as a finalist after a long season on the water, which saw them head to the

world championship in Eton and win two national titles. “I suppose after you get the victory and you get over the whole ‘cool, we won,’ there’s all that other stuff that comes with it. So it’s nice to be recognised.” Scott and Mitchell formed the New Zealand junior quad alongside two Auckland rowers, their familiarity giving the team plenty of chemistry before the races even began. After leading for half of the world championship final, they were pegged back by the three other teams, leaving Mitchell and Scott “devastated.” But Scott says the pair will be better from the experience. “It was awesome. You didn’t really know what to expect because you’ve never really done that type of racing yet. But to be able to compare against the world, and to see all the other cultures, it was good to just see where we are and where we can improve.” Scott and Mitchell will both be attending Otago University next year where they are likely to pair up again for the rowing season. But first on the agenda is the NZCT awards night on December 7. Scott says they will be proud no matter who claims the individual accolade, even if the judges vote in favour of one of the rowers. “At the end of the day we’re mates and if your mate does something well then you congratulate him.”

Junior athletes take off With the competition held on Sunday, the weather played a big part in top performances all-round, although the lack of wind had to be taken into account when record times were on the line. “I think it was a big success. We had a good turnout, the weather turned it on and it ran smoothly,” says Sally Mackay of Athletics Nelson. The new Saxton Oval Pavilion was well used by competitors and supports says Sally. “The new facilities were appreciated and worked very well.”
IN BRIEF SAILING: Nelson’s Daryl Wislang is currently onboard Camper Team New Zealand in its Volvo Ocean Race. Daryl’s team is currently in third position. CYCLING: Nelson’s George Bennett will join fellow New Zealand riders Hayden Roulston and Jesse Sergent in the highprofile RadioShack Nissan Trek team next season. George rode for the Under-23 development Trek Livestrong team last year, but spent time riding in the United States and Europe as an apprentice with the old RadioShack squad for part of the year. He will be joining a new look team under ninetime Tour de France winning director Johan Bruyneel which includes Fabian Cancellara and the Schleck brothers, Andy and Frank. CRICKET: Stoke/Nayland secured first innings points but couldn’t press for an outright win over new boys on the block, Athletic College Old Boys in the senior two day cricket on Saturday. While the other city-based team, Wakatu, were beaten convincingly by Motueka at Victory Square. Waimea Toi Toi United lead the competition.

Hundreds of junior athletes took to the Saxton Field track for the Hester Shield on Sunday. The Hester Shield is a regular competition between the five athletics clubs from the top-of-the-South from Marlborough to Nelson. The event was well attended by 170 athletes at the junior level from five to fifteen years. All the major disciplines were in action; sprints, hurdles, middle distance, jumps and throws. A standout Nelson performer was Jonas Kale, who equaled the best time for the under-14 100m dash.

Nelson in seven's heaven Phillip Rollo
They might have fallen short in the purist form of the game, but when it comes to rugby sevens, Nelson is still boss. A hat-trick from Tasman Makos captain Andrew Goodman and the workman-like effort from devastating looseforward Jake Cooley handed the defending champions a well deserved 43-27 victory over Stoke in a replay of last year's Turf Hotel Tasman Club 7's tournament, at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. Stoke opened the scoring through Brenton Connell, before Andrew sprinted 60m down the left wing to close the scoreline. Robbie Malneek, who had been coaching Nelson College all tournament, collected his boots for the final and his fresh legs were a noticeable advantage, scoring and converting with his first touch of the pill, after Sione Holani had increased Stoke's lead. Stoke captain Shawn Begg was then given a spell
on the sideline for punching Andrew square in the face. A try to either side before the break saw honours split after ten minutes. But it was all blue in the second half, as errors crept in to the Stoke camp. Willis Scott continued his strong form, before Andrew put the icing on the cake, sealing his hat-trick and giving Nelson a piece of silverware to end the rugby season on. The tournament, which has become an annual fixture, was well represented in 2011 with two teams from Marlborough, one from Westport and Nelson College joining the region's top club sides. Nelson College were the most entertaining side throughout the tournament with winger Kerehama Barrett impressing against his older counterparts, until they were surpassed by Nelson in the semi-finals. The scoreline was much higher than when the two sides first played each other in 1870 with 18 players each. A Tasman Makos rugby sevens team will be selected following the tournament.
The inaugural Nelson Sunshine Centre of NZ Junior Touch Tournament was held at Tahunanui over the weekend. The tournament was a junior tri-series between Nelson, Canterbury and Marlborough with teams competing in Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 divisions. Nelson had four teams competing, but didn’t come away with any first place finishes. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
