Local football clubs are grappling with a recent order from up high that all players will have to be vaccinated if they want to participate in the sport. Football clubs across the region will be forced to test their depth

with a number of players unable to play this season due to a vaccination mandate. New Zealand Football has confirmed all football and futsal competitions will operate as My Vaccine Pass gatherings for players over the age of 12. Motueka AFC says it will with-

draw its four senior sides from the Nelson competition if the mandate is not lifted. President Olivier David says they don’t want to close the doors on any players. “We don’t want to tell any of our players that they can’t play.” The decision has not been final-

ised as the club is consulting with its community and awaiting correspondence from New Zealand Football. “If the vaccine pass gets taken out of the situation, we would be happy to come back.” Olivier says it was an incredibly difficult call to make, but their

priority is to offer sport to everyone. “Our community’s mental wellbeing and everyone’s medical situations have been taken into account. We don’t want to force anyone to do anything. It is a

Marchfest an empty drop Nelson’s top craft beer festival Marchfest has been cancelled for the first time since its inception 15 years ago. “This was a heart-breaking decision to have to make, especially as this is a long running festival and a highlight of the Nelson/Tasman events calendar, in the 15 years Marchfest has been running, this is the first time we have had to cancel,” Festival dircetor Lea Muirden says. She says advance ticket sales for the festival indicated that people were excited to get together and celebrate NZ Craft Beer, but the ongoing uncertainty of the red light setting made it difficult to plan. “With the festival being so close and the uncertainty around when large festivals can happen, it makes it difficult to plan ahead to ensure there is no further impact for our event, our breweries, Marchfest co-owner shelley Haring says it’s been disappointing to have to cancel Marchfest. Mandate sidelines footballers Marchfest an from page 1 lose-lose situation.” Golden Bay president Phil Smith says the club will enforce the mandate, a decision which has seen him labelled a ‘Nazi’ by some. “It has divided people so much, it is no longer about the vaccination.” Phil says they were never going to please everyone, and they are simply there to provide football. “If we just pulled out, then we are still not catering for those who want to play competitively.” He says the club was determined to find the “middle ground”. Other than the derogatory slur, which came from outside the Golden Bay football com-

munity, Phil says the response has generally been met favourably. “We were never going to please everyone.” Phil says they will consult with other clubs to try to find regular games for players opting out of the mandate. He says the decision was made primarily to protect the community and provide a safe environment for footballers. “No one wants to be responsible for a super spreader event or for someone’s grandma getting sick.” Phil says as a club it has a duty to provide. “We don’t set the rules and we are all volunteers trying to make the best of a bad situation.” Nelson Suburbs director of football Ryan Stewart says the

club is yet to be affected by the mandate. Nelson city councillor and local footballer Tim Skinner has contacted New Zealand Football and asked them to reconsider their decision. “I personally do not support New Zealand Football’s rule of vaccinated-only individuals to be allowed to play football.” Tim says requiring a vaccine pass to participate in football is over and above the Government’s rules and regulations, and over and above Nelson City Council’s rules and expectations for community to access to outdoor sports facilities. “I am not antivax, and my family and I are fully vaccinated by choice. They are very disappointed that their teammates and school mates may not be able to play.

Kate Russell Despite a plea from the public to include a water play area in the current $3.75m Modellers Pond development, Nelson City Council says the location is “not suitable” for one. Last Tuesday the council was inundated with comments on their Facebook post, which included an update on the longawaited Modellers Pond park project. The project involves transforming the weed-infested pond into a reserve featuring seating, picnic areas, trees, natural play areas, boardwalks, a sheltered lookout for birdwatching, and a proposed shunting yard that will complement the model train tracks. However, people were quick to ask why the development didn’t include a water play area or a splash pad/park - something that Nelson parents have been crying out for, for over a decade. It attracted such a slew of negative comments from the public, the comment section was eventually turned off. The move was labelled ‘frustrating’, ‘disappointing’ and ‘a missed opportunity’ by some. “Disappointing we’re not getting a splash pad or water play area. I gave this feedback when NCC was consulting on this, as did many others, how was

Comments on the post were turned on again on Wednesday with a response from council on 12 February saying “unfortunately, as a unique and delicate estuarine environment, the Tāhunanui Reserve is not a suitable location for a splash park”. Council’s group manager community services, Andrew White, told Nelson Weekly that they received feedback on the project via Shape Nelson from 56 people - 19 of whom wanted to see a splash park as part of it. He says they also received feedback from people keen to see natural play areas and picnic areas. “As with all feedback council

receives, all of these viewpoints were carefully considered, but it is not always possible to meet everyone’s desires for a public space, not least because of practical concerns.” Council says they won’t rule out building a splash park in another location. “We can see from the comments that there are many in our city who want a splash park and council officers are considering the suitability of alternative spaces.” Andrew says while they do monitor feedback on their social media channels and pass this on to relevant staff members, these comments are not used as feedback for formal consultations as profiles cannot be verified.

Honouring our animal war heroes JoNty DiNe Just like so many New Zealanders did so when called upon, countless numbers of animals have also served their country in times of war. Unlike the men and women, however, the majority of these animals did not return home. During World War 1, 16 million animals, including horses, pigeons, cats and dogs were deployed with eight million perishing in the conflict. Compounding the tragedy, a number of soldiers were also forced to make the decision to put their animals down once the war was over. To honour those brave animals, Purple Poppy Day has been created to give them the recognition they deserve. The day gained traction in New Zealand in 2018 when a plaque was unveiled to remember service animals at the army museum. Nelson will unveil its own plaque on Purple Poppy Day 2023 to honour the region’s animals who have served, are

Nelson RSA member Brian Ramsay says they are liaising with local interest groups regarding its location. “We have yet to work out the most appropriate place for

it,” he says. From cats being used to deal with rat infestations in the trenches, to camels carrying ammunition and dogs bringing aid to the injured, animals served a variety of purposes during times of war.

Brian says that even in modern warfare, the humble donkey is still used. “You might have the latest high-tech vehicle to take out the enemy but to get up and close in some of those areas, the donkey is the most useful.” Brian says we also can’t forget the police dogs on our frontlines every day. “They still serve the community and country.” During WW1, the New Zealand government acquired more than 10,000 horses. Of all the horses that survived, only four returned home. “One can only imagine the grief the men must have felt when their faithful steeds were put down, rather than leaving them in Egypt to an uncertain future,” says Ian Barker, son of trooper Percival Barker. Ian says it is imperative that we remember the contributions made by animals during war time. Purple Poppy Day, February 24

Marchfest cancelled The Nelson craft beer festival has been cancelled for first time in 15 years due to red traffic light restrictions. Advanced ticket sales had already exceeded last year’s, and it had looked on track to be the biggest festival yet. The event will now run 4 March 2023 and all tickets have been automatically transferred. However, ticket holders also have a refund option.

Nelson house prices fall House price values in Nelson City have fallen slightly over the month of January - however, despite values decreasing by 0.35 per cent over the past month, the last quarter saw house prices rising by 4.5 per cent. First-home buyers have been less active as increased interest rates and tighter lending criteria make it more difficult for them to get on the property ladder and listing numbers continue to increase.

Vaccine boost for the region Nelson Marlborough has become the first region to pass 50 per cent in the race to get the adult population boosted against Covid-19. Last week, 52 per cent of people aged 18 and over have had their booster shot. Of those eligible, 67 per cent had their booster shot, with a further 30,069 people eligible.

Nelson still shines NIWA statistics placed the wider Nelson region at fourth for sunshine hours for the month of January - the 13th hottest on record for the country. Taranaki, Hawkes Bay and Marlborough all kickstarted the race for sunniest region ahead of Nelson Tasman. Nelson had 337 sunshine hours.

‘I just want stability’: Housing waitlist in gridlock Kate Russell Ashleigh Sayers stares at the empty walls of her transitional accommodation every day and wishes she could put up some pictures. The solo mum of four boys is currently living in accommodation provided by Women’s Refuge because the social housing waitlist is in gridlock, and no one will rent her a house. “We don’t have any of our own furniture or toys and can’t even put photos up. I feel like I can’t relax because there are visits twice a week. It feels like a motel, but at least it’s a roof over our heads.” The 28-year-old was previously living in an unhealthy domestic situation and has now been in transitional housing for a year. She says she has been on the social housing waitlist for more than a year. “I can’t even remember the exact time because I have been on it for so long. I seem to have quite a high rating but still, nothing.” From September 2020 to September 2021 the number of applicants on the social housing register in Nelson rose from 240 to 267, according to the most recent Ministry of Housing and Urban Development figures.

My kids need space I’m trying to find somewhere with a backyard.” Nelson MP Rachel Boyack, who campaigned heavily on affordable housing, says she is still working closely with Kāinga Ora on their plans for new homes in Nelson. “We have a deficit of public and affordable housing in Nelson that has built up for decades. I’m working alongside Kāinga Ora, Nelson City Council, community housing providers, and developers to turn this around and get affordable homes for Nelsonians built.” She says Kāinga Ora is also working hard to refurbish some of the pensioner flats so that they are warm, dry, and safe for occupants. Meanwhile, Ashleigh says the lease on her transitional home renews every 12 weeks, which can be hard. “I’ve got to show that I’m actively looking for houses, otherwise I can’t live here. Stability is so important to me. I just want somewhere we can call home.”

Cawthron’s new chief science officer to bridge gaps Max Frethey Nelson’s Cawthron Institute has a new science head who will help bridge the gap between science and industry. Dr Cath McLeod has been appointed to the newly created position of chief science officer. Cath has a history of collaboration with Cawthron, however, has not worked for institute in the past. Soon after completing her Bachelor of Science at Massey University, Cath was working as a technician to undertake routine analysis of shellfish. “I guess I got quite passionate about it,” Cath admits. In the mid-1990s, New Zealand suffered from blooms of toxic algae along its coasts which had a major impact on the country’s shellfish industry and on those who collected seafood recreationally. Cath says the country had to set up a very intense monitoring program, in a short amount of time. “I was involved in the testing of shellfish.” Cath explains that, at the time, mice were used to test the toxins in the shellfish, which she calls a very “barbaric practice”. Cath was interested in pursuing alternative, mouse-free testing methods, so went and completed her Master of Science with Honours at Victory University. She studied yessotoxin and its presence in shellfish and was able to collaborate with Cawthron in the process. She says that Cawthron was very interested in researching marine biotoxins and was eventually able to develop an international standard of biotoxin

Cath says she was proud to have taken part in that process. “Even just as a periphery role.” In subsequent positions, Cath has worked with for the Ministry for Primary Industries which gave her a good insight into how policy and government functioned. She later went on to help Australia increase its capacity and capability for monitoring food safety. “I hope have made a contribution to make food safe to eat.” As for Cawthron, Cath says that her move to Nelson was deliberate. Cath has nothing but good things to say about Cawthron and its work, having been mentored by some of their scientists in her past collaborations with the institute. “I’ve wanted to work for Cawthron for a number of years,” she says. “I’m quite excited.” In her new position as chief science officer, Cath hopes she can foster “more connectivity within the organisation”.

Cawthron is a large institute, employing around 300 people who operate in separate teams that focus on distinct but frequently overlapping fields of research. “I’m keen to explore those synergies and increase collaboration between them.” Cath’s more recent roles have focused on communication and relationships between different groups. She says she would love to see Cawthron continue to become a trusted intermediary between diverse interests, like government, food producers, iwi, and the wider community, to help identify and find scientific solutions to the modern problems. The chief science officer role was created to ensure Cawthron places a greater focus on strategic areas of research that can bridge the gap between science and industry. Cawthron’s chief executive, Volker Kuntzch, says that Cath will be an exceptional chief science officer.

Community work suspended in Nelson Tracy Neal Open Justice Reporter

Nelson Bays is the only place in the South Island to have community work suspended after being considered at high risk of Covid-19. The move has resulted in at least one offender being able to complete his sentence without having to do all of the work required. It’s also got some lawyers worried that people going through the courts will be in breach of their community service, through no fault of their own, and potentially face further charges because they’ve not been able to complete the hours required. The move comes as the Department of Corrections has reduced staffing levels and suspended community work in areas where there is deemed to be a “very high level of community transmission”. Those areas include Nelson Bays, the Northern Region (Including Taitokerau, Waitemata, Auckland and Manukau); the Murupara area, Bay of Plenty District; and Palmerston North, which are now at stage three settings - the department’s most restrictive. The remainder of the country is operating in a setting where com-

munity work can operate with lower numbers and with distancing. Nelson lawyer Tony Bamford told Open Justice the hefty restrictions meant clients had been finding it difficult to complete their sentences within the statutory sixmonth timeframe. “As I understand it, the local Corrections service has suspended community work because of the presence of Omicron in the area, which will mean no one will be able to do community work either at the community work centres or at community placements. “We’re going to run into a real problem with clients being charged potentially with breach offences through no fault of their own, because they’ve ended up not being able to complete the hours.” A Nelson judge recently ordered one offender’s sentence complete, with more than 40 hours remaining. Kane Webby appeared in the Nelson District Court recently for breaching community work and a sentence review, when his lawyer argued it was because Covid-19 restrictions meant his client was having trouble finishing his community work.

Nelson is the only place in the South Island to suspend community work. Photo: Tracy Neal. Judge Jo Rielly noted in court that there were other cases with similar back stories. Corrections general manager probation, Darius Fagan, said community work and face to face reporting in the regions mentioned had been suspended, “unless risk and assessment determined otherwise”. He said it was to ensure the safety of staff and people it managed, and to reduce the chance of Covid-19 spreading in the community.

It had expected a higher level of community transmission, which increased the level of risk to its staff and the people it managed when the Government moved to the nationwide traffic light system. Nelson lawyer Kelly Hennessey told Open Justice the problem had been mounting since Covid-19 emerged two years ago. “It’s a whole grey area – it’s a mess.” Community work is a low-tariff sentence imposed by the court

which requires people to do unpaid work in the community as punishment for their offending. It is designed to provide people with the opportunity to take responsibility for their offending and learn new work skills and habits. Prior to the suspension of community work, people were missing out through restrictions on the numbers able to be carried in Corrections’ vans, due to social distancing requirements. Darius confirmed that no written documentation was provided to an individual if they were excused on any particular day, but this information was captured on Corrections’ database and was made available to the court on request. Tony Bamford said there had always been questions about the accuracy of record systems. “Consistently, I have clients turning up saying they have completed a certain number of hours where Corrections records say a completely different number.” O P E N

Takepart part a study assessing an investigational vaccine Take in in a study assessing an investigational studystudy vaccine to prevent respiratory virussyncytial (RSV) disease to preventsyncytial respiratory virus (RSV) disease Respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, is a common cold-like virus that affects the airways of the lungs. Most people with RSV have only mild, cold-like symptoms. However, older adults can sometimes have serious complications, including inflammation of the lungs or pneumonia. Currently, there is no approved vaccine for RSV. We are looking for people to take part in a clinical research study to help us find a way to prevent RSV disease. The main goal of the EVERGREEN Study is to see if an investigational study vaccine can prevent RSV disease caused by RSV in older adults. The study will also collect information about the safety of the study vaccine. By supporting research and joining the EVERGREEN Study, people may learn more about respiratory infections. Are you able to help? You may be able to take part in the EVERGREEN Study if you: • are 60 years of age or older • can do your usual daily activities even with some interference from any health conditions • are able to use smartphones, tablets, and/or computers.

If you are interested, additional eligibility criteria, including your health conditions, will be assessed by the study doctor or staff. The study will last for about 1 year and 7 months. You will have at least 4 scheduled visits to the study centre and 2 phone calls. Your health will be monitored carefully by a team of doctors and nurses throughout the study. Qualified participants may receive the study vaccine and some study-related medical care at no cost. The study will not pay for other medical care or current medication(s) needed to support your daily healthcare routine. Please contact the study team today if you are interested in joining the EVERGREEN Study or would like more information. By contacting us, you are under no obligation to take part in the study. Scholarship engineers pathway Staff RepoRteR With support of the Sir Wallace Rowling Scholarship, Yeni has her sights set on medical innovation Nelson College for Girls graduate Yeni Choi was shocked when she found out how much her tertiary studies were going to cost. Yeni decided to pursue an engineering career because she wants to help people and make the world a better place. Following the death of her mother last year following a second cancer diagnosis she says it became even more important for her to do well in her studies and to strive for excellence, as it’s what her mother would have wished for her. Yeni is the recipient of Network Tasman Trust’s Sir Wallace Rowling Scholarship, which sees her get $3000 towards her studies. “To be part of the engineering community that creates innovative ways to tackle global issues is my ultimate aspiration,” she says. “I’m passionate about being involved with the healthcare industry to overcome clinical

obstacles.” With the financial support of the scholarship, the multitalented student and accomplished musician is due to commence an engineering degree at the University of Canterbury. Network Tasman Charitable Trust established the scholarship in memory of Sir Wallace Rowling, the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, who was also a Network Tasman Trust Chairman and Director of Tasman Energy. While the first year of engineering is quite broad, Yeni says she’s already quite keen to specialise in mechatronics, which is a mix of mechanical, software and electrical engineering. “I’m really interested in the design aspect and the opportunity to focus on developing smart products, especially for use in medicine,” she says. Nelson College for Girls principal Cathy Ewing says Yeni was an amazing young woman who “gives hugely to others”. “Yeni’s natural ability is enhanced by a superb work ethic and a strong belief that learning takes place in, and beyond,

the classroom. She is a very talented musician in particular, but also very modest and well-liked by many; a wonderful human being.” As well as receiving excellent academic grades in art, music and English, Yeni is a violinist and pianist who has also played the trumpet in the past. She has been actively involved in the Nelson Symphony Orchestra, two Chamber groups, her own ensemble, a school jazz band and an independent rock band, which was highly commended at the Smokefree Rockquest. She also managed to squeeze in volunteer work at several Nelson events and the Nelson/ Tasman Hospice Shop, a role she said she holds “dear to her heart” following her mother’s hospice journey. After her family made frequent trips south for her mother’s cancer treatment, she said Christchurch now felt like ‘my family’s second home.” At the end of 2021, three students were awarded the scholarship to support their first year of tertiary study including Yeni. Coincidentally, all three will head to Canterbury.

THIS

WEEK’S SPECIALS VALENTINES DAY A LITTLE SOMETHIN’ SWEET.

Will Fraser created a chair as part of his studies at the Centre for Fine Woodworking programme in 2020. Photo: Supplied.

New scholarship offered in fine wood working Jenny nicholson The Centre for Fine Woodworking is offering the inaugural Thorkild Hansen Scholarship worth more than $8000. This will cover one student’s fees, and some travel costs, for their 8-week intensive fine woodworking programme. School manager Helen Gerry says the scholarship was set up in dedication to Thorkild Hansen who Helen describes as “the backbone of the school and its world-class reputation”. “Sadly, Thorkild passed away late last year,” Helen says. “As a not-for-profit organisation, we felt this scholarship would be a great tribute to him and a wonderful opportunity for a young person in our region.” Helen says the school offers the very highest quality of tuition available in fine woodworking, preserving and passing on the time-honoured craft to future generations of craftspeople. Their current full-time tutor, Louise Fuller, will lead the eight-week intensive. Helen says Louise is a highlyskilled furniture maker who has made furniture for the Canadian Embassy. “Lou is a classy expert in her field,” says 2021 student Dave George.

“She is one of the most valuable resources the centre has.” Dave says the programme covered more ground than he expected, and he finished with a vastly improved understanding of the techniques and tools one can employ to achieve great results. During the course, participants will complete a couple of exercises before making a wall-hanging shelf and cabinet, and a chair. Kirsten McLaurin shifted to Nelson last year and attended the 8-week programme. As a result of the course she had a career change and is now a cabinet maker. With the course starting on 4 April 2022, Helen realises it is short notice. However, she says they are hoping to receive applicants who are under 25 years of age and live in the Top of the South. A cover letter from a teacher or employer stating the applicant shows promise and talent will also be required. A space is being held for the successful applicant, with the course otherwise full. Anyone interested can contact Helen Gerry, Trust Manager on cfwoodwork@gmail.com The deadline for applications is 1 March 2022.

Opinion

Dear New Zealand Football, Nelson Bays Football and the region’s Club Presidents. I am writing in concern and great disappointment in your divisive decision to alienate from football all players over 12 years of age who are not vaccinated. I personally do not support New Zealand Football’s rule of vaccinated only individuals to be allowed to play football. I strongly remind you that the requiring a vaccine pass for our community to participate in football is over and above the government’s rules and regulations. I support our regions sports clubs and community to participate fully and access our fields unhindered, as long as our bylaws and government regulations are adhered to. I play competitive and social football summer and winter, and so do my three sons and daughter, we are fully vaccinated by choice. They are very disappointed that their teammates and school mates may not be able to play or train with them in their teams. These are the same friends they socialise with six hours a day, and five days a week inside at school and outside in the playground

without any requirement of vaccination. Football is an important part of our community bonding. inclusion and wellbeing, especially for our refugee community. This decision being imposed by NZ Football on our sports clubs and residents goes against this ethos. It is divisive, discriminative and goes beyond the current government red light rules and guidelines to be adhered to. Thus, New Zealand Football, I strongly request that you listen to our football clubs’ representatives and facilitators and reconsider your unrequested policy. Tim Skinner

A new glimpse of Nelson’s past: A little-known fact about the origins of the building depicted on the front page of last week’s Nelson Weekly as Bay View Service Station, which was on the corner of Tahunanui Drive and Bisley Ave, is that it was originally built in the early 1940’s as a 400-seat cinema. The cinema was to be operated by prominent independent exhibitor Miles Eteveneau. But in those days, cinema exhibitors needed a licence to show movies to the public and

Linda Marshall’s father Alec Squire owned the garage featured on the front cover of Nelson Weekly, 9 February edition during the 1950’s. She remembers the garage supporting four families through employment. “It sold cars, petrol, provided mechanical works and was a Citroën agency,” Linda says. Here she is pictured with her car in front of the garage in 1957 with the Tāhunanui Hills in the background. the major cinema chains routinely objected to anyone else getting a licence on the basis that another cinema was “not in the public interest”. Consequently, Miles told me he was not able to get an exhibitor’s licence for the site so he moved to Helensville near Auckland where he ran the Regent Cinema for many years. The building subsequently became a service station. More recently, it

It is not hard to imagine the cinema origins of the building with its art deco exterior design, being similar in style to the State Cinema which was built for Amalgamated Theatres a few years earlier in 1936 - add some neon and canopy lights and it’s all there. My heart breaks for these people and their employees. Everything they have is on the line to keep their business open and people in work. It would be interesting to hear what our local MP has to say about the position these stoic New Zealanders find themselves in. Saying these measures are saving lives no longer cuts it. Linda Hansen Most people are able to go to these venues. I think a lot of people are just staying home due to the possibility of contracting omicron. No government measure can affect that. Doug Barry-Martin We are all suffering. My husband is driving buses because our tour company has no tourists. You do what you have to when loans need repaying. Susan Perry

It’s time to let the sun in To celebrate the opening of its solar hub in Nelson, Lightforce is gifting a $30,000 solar system and battery to an organisation that does great things in our community. Lightforce is committed to partnering with organisations that align with its goals so, as part of its Solar for Good programme, it’s asking people in the Nelson Tasman and Marlborough regions to nominate a deserving charity or notfor-profit that could do more good work with the money it will save on electricity. Reducing environmental impact has long been a major selling point of solar and that is becoming even more appealing as we shift away from fossil fuels and towards lower-carbon energy sources. Owning your own power is also becoming more appealing given residential power prices have gone up by 48% since 2000, far in excess of the rate of inflation. The price of solar panels has come down dramatically in recent years, too, so going solar also makes financial sense, especially in a sun-soaked region like the Top of the South. CEO Luke Nutting says a lot of Lightforce customers are not paying anything for their power and are often getting credits

from their power companies because they sell excess energy back to the grid. Lightforce is the country’s fastestgrowing solar installer and has delivered world-class solar solutions to over 6,000 residential, commercial and agricultural customers around the country. Around 80% of the systems Lightforce now installs include batteries, which means solar energy can be used when we need it most - peak usage times in the morning and at night. And, in what Nutting sees as a big endorsement of the company and its vision, it recently signed an exclusive distribution deal with global battery powerhouse Energizer Homepower.

Nominate a deserving organisation for the Solar for Good giveaway by visiting lightforce.co.nz. Entries close on Thursday 3rd March.

While living down in Waihōpai (Invercargill), we decided to team up and open NTS Nutrition together, with James bringing in his nutrition knowledge and Kate her business background. At the end of 2020 we made the big move up to Whakatū! We took NTS Nutrition with us (and our two large furbabies) and now are completely based online. If you are:- sick of trying to make changes but always seeming to end up back where you started - not making any progress with what you are currently doing - overwhelmed with where to even start and feeling like nothing ever works ...then that’s where we come in. We’ve got your back and know exactly what you need to do. Our ongoing coaching model means that we don’t just tell you what to eat, we coach you through it step-by-step and

help you actually do it. Our primary focus is on making nutrition sustainable and long lasting and we are firm believers in creating a realistic plan that suits each individual. Kate is our business brains and runs NTS from behind the scenes (Bachelor of Law). James is our associate registered nutritionist and personal trainer (Bachelor in Human Nutrition, Bachelor in Exercise Prescription & Management, Associate Registered Nutritionist, Precision Nutrition Certified). Good coaching is about meeting someone where they’re at and starting from there. We will work closely together to find an approach for you, taking into account the bigger picture of your life. This approach is slow, sustainable and long-lasting. We will teach you how nutrition actually works and set you up for life. We work with all clients remotely via video consult so we can work with you wherever you are, from the comfort of your own home. ntsnutrition.co.nz - 027 311 9676

Wāhine returns to Whakatū Max Frethey The Wāhine Exhibition has returned to Whakatū. The exhibition features a collection of photographs of Māori women and each photograph is paired with a voice recording of the wāhine. The four local wāhine who began the exhibition have been joined by another four as it has toured around Te Waipounamu/the South Island. The women were initially interviewed about what was important to them and spent time sharing stories from their lives. Recordings of background noises were also taken from around each wāhine’s home and mixed into the interviews to add to the listener’s immersion. Attendees of the exhibition can sit down in front of one of the portraits and put on a pair of headphones to listen to each woman’s story. The creator of the Wāhine Exhibition, Loren Pasquier, came to Aotearoa from

Tips on writing the perfect resume 1. Keep it short Your current CV may include information about every job or course you’ve ever done but, in New Zealand, CVs are usually only two to three pages long. Employers mainly want to know if you can do the job. Your CV should include: • your contact details • work experience that is relevant to the job you want • your skills that are relevant to the job

2. Give examples of your skills When writing about your skills, don’t just list them – make sure that you give examples of how you’ve used each skill. Identify what you did, the setting in which the activity was carried out, and what happened as a result. 3. Make sure your CV is up to date If you want an employer to contact you, you need to keep your CV up to date with your latest address and telephone number. • Include the phone number that you are most easily contacted on, whether it’s a landline or cellphone number. • Check that you have a suitable answerphone message. • Include an email address on your CV. If you don’t have an email address, set one up. 4. Include referee contact details Most New Zealand employers will ask for two referees who they can contact to ask about your work. Make sure that the contact details for your referees are current, and check this by contacting them yourself. Tell them about your plans and ask them to read your CV – you may get some good advice from them. Some New Zealand employers prefer you to

have New Zealand work experience. If you are having trouble finding work, consider taking an entry-level job or doing voluntary work. This can also be a source of referees. 5. Put yourself in the employer’s place Once you’ve written your CV it’s important to ask yourself these three key questions: • When an employer scans my CV, will they think “This CV looks interesting”? Employers have to sort and reduce a pile of CVs to shortlists of two or three people. They will respond better to a clear, well laid-out CV than a long, disorganised one. • When an employer reads my CV fully, will they think “This person has skills we need”? Employers are looking for someone who matches the job description. Adjust and target your CV to highlight things that fit the job you are applying for. • When an employer is shortlisting CVs will they think “This person is worth meeting”? Employers are thinking about what you can offer them. Give people a sense of who you are and what you do best. 6. Get it checked It is important to get someone else to check your CV to see that it makes sense, is well formatted and has no spelling or grammatical mistakes. 7. Write a cover letter When you send your CV to an employer, make sure you include a cover letter. Your cover letter should: • explain why you want the job • explain what you can offer the employer • highlight skills, qualifications and experience that you have that match the job.

4 steps to planning your job search 1. Reflect Take a moment to stop and reflect upon your career. Consider where you are in your career and, crucially, what role you ultimately aspire to. Once you define your ultimate career goal, you can identify the promotions and skills required to get there. Ask yourself such questions as: • Where do I see myself in ten years’ time? • What job/s will help me bridge the gap to reach my goal? • What have I achieved in my career to date that I’m proud of? • Is my ultimate career goal still the same as it was last time I looked for a job? If not, what’s changed? • What are my strengths and weaknesses? • What skill gaps do I need to overcome to reach my goal? 2. Define your next move Once you have identified your career goal and the steps required to get there, you need to define your immediate next career move. It’s important to look beyond the duties and experience you need to acquire and consider the bigger picture, such as the culture in which you thrive and the benefits you want. Ask yourself such questions as: • What role represents the next sensible step towards my longterm career goal? • What skills do I need to develop in my next role? • Do I want a job offering room for progression? • Are learning and development opportunities important?

• What kind of culture brings out the best in me? • What kind of work environment brings out the best in me? • What salary and benefits am I realistically looking for? Download our Job Search Planner to take control of your job search. Our planner guides you through these stages to focus your job search and lead you to success. 3. Get to work Once you know what your immediate next job should be, it’s time to update your CV and LinkedIn profile. This includes creating an eyecatching professional summary that positions you as a suitable candidate for the job. It should focus on what you can offer an employer, not what you want out of your next job. Ultimately, both your CV and LinkedIn profile should contain enough evidence to demonstrate the relevancy of your previous experience and successes so that a hiring manager or recruiter cannot overlook you. 4. Plan your week It’s important to break your job search down into small actionable tasks. Otherwise, you may feel overwhelmed and give up before you even start. You can do this by identifying weekly goals and then breaking them down into daily tasks so that you keep your job search on track. Examples of such manageable tasks include: • Identify at least five prospective

employers; • Find and apply to at least one job opening; • Schedule a meeting with a recruiting expert; • Share with your recruiter what you want in your next job; • Network with existing connections and build your online connections; • Sharpen your interviewing skills – both for inperson and video interviews Once you’ve created your plan, stick to it! Refer to it regularly, update your weekly planner each Monday and allocate some time every day to spend on your job search.

PLAY F Another season of region’s most popular team sport is about to kick off with hundreds of players preparing to lace up their boots for a busy year of football. After a ten-year wait, the Richmond division one men’s side finally broke its championship hoodoo in 2021, winning its final against a highly-favoured Rangers outfit in Blenheim. The club also took out the women’s division one, as the Foxes continue to set the benchmark for women's football in Nelson with its third title in a row. Rounding off the success, the Richmond Hornbills claimed men’s third division while the Bogans took out men's fifth division. The pandemic again wreaked

Our club’s vision is “to create a competitive club with strong family values that encourage the community to engage with the sport for life”. We pride ourselves on developing players that have a love of football and a desire to succeed on and off the pitch. In 2021, we registered 15 teams from juniors to seniors and had nearly 100 kids coming through our First Kicks and Fun Football programmes catering for 5 – 8 year olds. What a season it was, four of our seven senior teams won their divisions! We are successful in more ways than one, and regardless of results, achievements, or levels of football our players reach, we remain focused on being a welcoming, friendly, and inclusive club for all.

Getting kids into football at an early age is a good way to teach them accountability, leadership, and the impact of positive sportsmanship. is an invaluable tool for football development. New Zealand Football is confident that with the support of all its affiliates and the ongoing support of FIFA and Oceania, futsal will continue to grow in popularity in New Zealand. Improving accessibility is at the forefront of the future of Saxton Field while an anticipated new BMX track has been left in the dust. A budget of $150,000 was included in the 2021/2022 year for the construction of a BMX track between the Saxton Velodrome and Saxton Creek. However, the Saxton Field Committee agreed at a November meeting to defer the project as the initially proposed location presented problems with low hanging powerlines, the velodrome embankment and cost. In the November report, it was decided the cost to deliver a track that meets competition requirements in the proposed location would be “significantly higher than anticipated”. Nelson BMX club president Mason Palliser says his understanding is that the project would not be going ahead “at this stage”. “It’s a bit disheartening but we’re still trying to work with the council to improve our facility in Tāhunanui.” The need for the project, a more suitable location, and a revised budget is set to be considered in the 2024/2034 Long Term Plans of both Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council. Late last year, the final stage of the

$339,000 car parking and roadway link from Champion Dr to Saxton Field was complete with some planting and bollard instalments to be made. The project came under budget by $195,000 so the money will be transferred to shared pathways project to improve access around the complex. Saxton Field committee member and Nelson’s deputy mayor Judene Edgar says there are three priority pathways that council is working on. The pathways include footpaths at the fields entrance through the hockey area, connecting the hockey field to the outdoor exercise centre with a walking route to the cricket oval and then from the velodrome out to Champion Rd. “There’s a lot of passive recreation here, the goal with Saxton’s was never to make it a sports complex in of itself,” she said. The committee made a point of how important seating and shade would be along these pathways, especially for older residents living in neighbouring retirement villages. “It’s all a part of making the field accessible to all ages,” says Judene.

Gray geared up for Mako season Peter Jones Gray Cornelius has ascended to the region’s top coaching role in traditional fashion. Like many coaches who have risen through the ranks, Gray learned his trade during a lengthy stint as a first XV coach. A long-serving physical education teacher at Marlborough Boys’ College, Gray stepped in as head coach in 2009. From there he began to fashion a style of play and culture that saw his side, superbly led by future All Black Atu Moli, win the coveted Press Cup in 2013. He continued to mentor the college until 2018, then began his involvement with Tasman, as coach of the Tasman B side later that year. Gray has been a Mako assistant coach for the past three seasons, learning the ropes at provincial level, and is excited by the opportunity to continue the Mako success story. However, he admits he and co-head coach Dan Perrin

have a big job on their hands. “They are massive shoes to fill,” he says. “I am looking forward to the challenge … these are exciting times.” Gray has worked with Dan in the Mako set-up and with the Tasman under-20s, so knows how he operates. “What is important for Dan and I is to keep the things that have been successful for us and the Mako team, but also to add our own flavour,” he says. “The Mako coaching environment is a really collaborative setup … we have people with head roles, but there is a lot of talent and everybody pitches in.” With more Covid uncertainty surrounding the shape of the forthcoming season, Gray is well aware that a degree of flexibility may again be required. “That has been the case over the last few years. The biggest thing we have learned is that you can have all the structures in place, but you must be able to think on your feet.”

Gray Cornelius is looking forward to co-head coaching the Mako this season. Photo: Peter Jones. Gray will be based in Blenheim in the lead-up to the Mako season, running the Tasman High Performance programme in Marlborough. A major boost for that programme is the fitting-out of the Tasman Mako High Performance

Gym, based at Lansdowne Park. Gray says, among the many advantages the new gym offered, was proximity to the region’s main rugby ground, plus an ability for users “to come and go as they pleased”. He says the fact Tasman rugby

now has a “concrete” presence in Marlborough is a major move forward. “When people walk in [to the gym] the first thing they see is the shark. “It is the first time we have had our own training facility in the history of the [Tasman] union and, on the practical side of things, it means we have no excuses anymore.” Gray played both club and representative rugby. He was born in Masterton, playing his first seasons of rugby for the famous Red Star club in that town, before turning out for Lincoln University when he headed south. Later, as an inside back with the Marlborough-based Harlequins and Awatere clubs, he was chosen to represent the Marlborough Red Devils from 1999 to 2005. The 47-year-old is married to Kylie and they have two children, 13-year-old Jed and 12-year-old Abbie. The Mako season kicks off later in the year.
