Warning after $200 taxi ride MaX FretHey Local taxi businesses are warning people to be careful about who they accept rides from after a taxi trip from Nelson to Richmond cost an unsuspecting traveller almost $200. Nelson is seeing an influx of drivers masquerading as taxis when large events like Bay Dreams come to the region. These drivers put taxi lights on the roofs of their cars and take part in hail work, often charging immense fees for short trips. Nico Palmer fell victim to one of these taxis, paying $198 for a trip from central Nelson to the edge of Richmond. He needed a ride home after attending the Netsky event, which replaced the annual Bay Dreams festival in January this year. “[The driver] said he’ll be charging extra because of the concert,” Nico says.

It disappoints me that these types of people are effectively allowed to operate unfairly. - Graeme Page, Nelson City Taxis.

But he didn’t realise just how much extra it would be. He says that he watched the number on the driver’s metre grow larger and larger and raised the issue with the driver who reiterated that the higher price was because of the concert. But when they reached their destination, Nico says he was charged double the amount shown on the metre. The driver used the same excuse. Nico says he has used a lot of taxis but spotted nothing out of the ordinary

The thought of her now being in a similar position is heartbreaking. She’s helped so many people in the community, we were pleased to be able to help her.” Willy was diagnosed last month, after

with his one that night. “They definitely looked legit.” Nelson City Taxis chairman Graeme Page is concerned about people like Nico who have been overcharged for short trips and wants to get the word out about the predatory practice. “My main objective is to provide better information and communication to our community and the public,” he says. “It disappoints me that these types of people are effectively allowed to operate unfairly.” Graeme says that the drivers of traditional taxi hire companies in the region are accountable, and that the danger are these drivers from out-of-town who get drawn to the region to make a quick dollar off large events. George Aker shares Graeme’s concerns. “Our guys have gone through health and safety, polytech courses, first aid courses,” he says. “This is what a good taxi driver goes through to provide a good job to his community.” George says these price gougers are sullying the name of the taxi industry which has historically been made up of good drivers. “I just to see fair play, that’s all.” Warren Quirke, the executive director of the New Zealand Taxi Federation, believes the gougers stem from regulatory changes made to the industry back in 2017. Since then, Warren says taxiing in New Zealand has split into three main groups: traditional taxis, ridesharers, and independent drivers. “[The independent drivers] are

graeme page of Nelson City Taxis. Photo: File. the ones we’re the most concerned about.” He says that a lack of policing of the industry is allowing these drivers to massively overcharge their customers. “They’re just taking advantage of the situation. It’s just not right,” Warren says. “It would be very helpful if there were people monitoring that.” As for making sure you’re not taken advantage of and charged exorbitant fees when hailing

taxis, there isn’t a lot you can do short of being aware and careful. “It is very much about buyer beware, unfortunately,” Warren says. “Our advice is to stick to traditional taxis.” Graeme and George recommend keeping an eye out for cameras, the driver’s ID, and price meters which often indicate a legitimate taxi, and warn that an illuminated sign on top of the car is not a guaranteed indicator of authenticity. Graeme also says that Nelson City Taxis take their fees very seriously and encourages anyone who thinks they have been overcharged by their business to call them. Nico says that if he were to be charged that much in future he wouldn’t pay. “Just say no, stand up for yourself.”

Roadworks hit all main routes Sara Hollyman All four main roads connecting Richmond and Nelson are undergoing road works at the same time due to a “compressed construction season”. The four roads are owned by three separate authorities, bringing into question the communication between each of them. This week, work on the Richmond Deviation will see the installation of traffic barriers. On Whakatū Drive, maintenance will take place at night during the week. Both of these roads are owned by Waka Kotahi. On Main Rd Stoke, a Nelson City Council road, works to upgrade the storm water system is on-going while the Tasman District Council-owned Salisbury Rd will have road works as an aged water main is upgraded. Tasman District Council’s transport manager, Jamie McPherson, says, while it is unusual for all of the roads to be experiencing maintenance and infrastructure development at the same time, the respective road controlling authorities are working together to ensure disruption is minimised. “All traffic lanes are still operating during peak traffic times.” He says backlog of construc-

The installation of the new traffic barrier on the Richmond Deviation closed the southbound lane of traffic (those heading from Nelson to Richmond) on Monday and Tuesday between 8pm and 5am. At the same time, night closures have begun on Whakatū Drive

between the Annesbrook and Raeward Fresh roundabouts, with the road closing at 8pm through to 5am, every night until Friday. While this closure is in place, Waka Kotahi systems manager, Top of the South, Andrew James, says they will be catching up with some other highway, vegetation and streetlight maintenance which had been “a bit harder to fit in, due to the very wet summer”. The replacement of an aged water main along Salisbury Rd will cause delays until July, while Main Rd Stoke has been disrupted since 2021 for the Saxton Creek flood protection upgrade.

Picking positivity for Willy’s cancer fight From page 1 doctors discovered a 12cm tumor on his adrenal gland during an MRI scan. Mum Sarah says Willy had a fever while they were camping at the start of January and was complaining about sore legs. He’d also been quite tired, and not eating much. “We took him to the doctor, and he was diagnosed with an autoinflammatory response in his legs, and told he’d come right in a week.” However, the next week he was home with a cough, and the week after he was home with an ear infection. “They sent us to A&E after our fourth trip to the GP, where an MRI showed a tumour, later diagnosed as a neuroblastoma. It had spread to his skull, left humerus, forearms, femora, lower legs, neck, hips, and sternum.” The family flew to Christchurch Hospital a few days later to start aggressive treatment. “I’m blown away at the generosity of Waimea Nurseries, and at the effort people are going to for my family. cell rescue, radiation, and surgery. The doctors have been clear that at this stage they are treating him with the goal of curing him into adulthood.” Willy has just completed his first week of chemo, which he described as being “a bit

spicy”. The family are spending most of their days at hospital having blood transfusions but go back to Ronald McDonald House at night, which is where they are staying for the next year while Willy undergoes treatment. She says that the shock diagnosis has completely upended their lives and they are now spending most of their days in isolated wards. “I haven’t seen my other son Baillie in a month. He had his 9th birthday without his mum or brother with him.” And Willy has gone from being a sociable four-year-old to being a tired little lad covered in tubes. “He’s kept his sense of humour though.” Volunteers, including Tracey Marvin from Bellyful, picked more than 1000 sunflowers for the fundraiser. The ones picked were sold in local farm shops and raised $750. A Givealittle page has also amassed $19,171 for the family. If you’d like to donate, visit givealittle.co.nz and search for Willy’s journey.

$2.1 million upgrade for Maitai camp Kate Russell The Maitai Valley Motor Camp is set to get a major upgrade to its wastewater system in the next financial year. Nelson City Council has allocated $2.1 million for the improvements in 2022/23, which were discussed at a full council meeting last Thursday. Group manager community services Andrew White says the current wastewater system is more than 60 years old and requires replacing in order for the camp to continue operating. “Council is currently in the plan-

ning phase, investigating options that will inform a resource consent application for the work,” he says. “We’ll look at all options and the feasibility of all options. At the moment we were working on a reduced capacity of 80 campers at any one time.” There are also other infrastructure upgrades planned that assist in meeting camp compliance requirements and generally im- Nelson City Council have allocated $2.1 million for upgrades at the prove services at the camp, such Maitai Valley Motor Camp in 2022/23. Annual plan consultation scrapped Kate Russell If you were hoping to have your say on Nelson City Council’s annual plan this year, you would be out of luck. At a full council meeting last Thursday, all but one councillor voted to not hold a formal consultation process on the 2022/23 annual plan. This is because it has “remained consistent” with last year’s long term plan (LTP), it will save money and staff time, and the council wants to spare the public “consultation fatigue”.

Changes to the Local Government Act in 2014 mean that councils in New Zealand no longer have to hold full public consultation on their annual plans if they do not differ significantly from their LTPs, which are reviewed every three years. Mayor Rachel Reese said it was a strong indication of the consistency and stability of the council’s planning processes. “We received a record number of submissions for our LTP last year, with over 660 people or organisations providing input. “The focus for us in this annual

cycle is to really keep the momentum going on those critical engagements and not risk consultation burn-out from our community by putting out a document where we haven’t got anything to change at this point of significance.” Group manager strategy and communications Nicky McDonald says not producing a plan this year could save the council $10 to 15k. “But staff and community time is the bigger drain.” A report to adopt the final annual plan and rates for 2022/23 will be brought to council before July.

husband George, have been managing the camp since 2005. They will be finishing up there on 30 June this year. Carol says she is grateful that the council is allowing their permanent residents to stay on while the upgrades are being undertaken. Currently, they have around 40 permanent residents living at the camp, including people who have come to Nelson for short-term contract work. “Everyone needs somewhere to live - there are people living here who have got nowhere else to go. Without them, the camp wouldn’t survive,” she says.

Dispute over Nelson home runs into fifth year TRACY NEAL Open Justice Reporter A Nelson couple locked in a dispute with the firm that built their home say legal bills and expert reports could reach half what it cost to build the house. Mark and Suzanne Chamberlain are now entering the fifth year of a legal wrangle that spans the District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal. The total bill for their affordable design-build home and section has now tipped over $1 million with more to come as they prepare for the latest round of court action with the company which operates the Nelson franchise of GJ Gardner Homes. “It’s potentially going to cost us well over $300,000 on top of what we thought we’d be paying, and it’s probably going to cost more,” the Chamberlains told Open Justice. The couple alleged a series of faults with the property – some they claim were evident on inspection and some they say had since emerged. When they withheld a portion of final payment, the building firm locked the doors on the day they were to move in. The Chamberlains responded by smashing their way into the

home and before long the company placed a caveat on the property, meaning that while they live there, they cannot sell. While a High Court judge ruled the caveat should not remain on the property the company, LSK Builders Ltd, which owns the franchise, has appealed that decision. The appeal is just another step in the process that dates back to 2017. The difficulties were reflected in Associate Judge Kenneth Johnston’s High Court decision last August. “In July 2017 Mr and Mrs Chamberlain engaged LSK to build a home for them in Nelson. The build did not go smoothly. Virtually from the outset differences arose,” Judge Johnston said. Legal action lodged by the firm against the Chamberlains in 2018, alleging they took possession illegally, and a counter claim lodged by the Chamberlains around the alleged faults and issues with the contract, were yet to be heard in the District Court. Mark Chamberlain said the home build firm’s allegation was based on his forced entry to the home on possession day, after the doors had been sealed shut as a result of the dispute. The Chamberlains said they paid the full amount on the fixed price

In a fixed price build, there are prime costs – those which a builder can lock in and guarantee, while provisional sums are allowances included in a fixed price construction contract for items of work unable to be priced by the contractor when entering the contract. According to the High Court decision, LSK claimed it was owed about $200,000. The Chamberlains told Open Justice that the amount withheld, and currently held in a lawyer’s trust account, was just under $145,000. The franchise was approached by email and telephone for com-

ment, but responded only to the Chamberlains’ lawyer, warning that further action was likely if they talked publicly while the dispute was still before the court. Judge Johnston noted in his High Court decision that litigation had reached the District Court, despite the contract containing a comprehensive dispute resolution provision. He also said that key clauses in the contract provided protections for the contractor in the event of a dispute about costs, in the form of entitlements to lodge a caveat against and register a mortgage over the title to the property. In October 2018 LSK placed a caveat against the title on the Chamberlains’ property. In January 2019 it registered a

mortgage against it to secure the amount in dispute, pending the outcome of the proceeding in the District Court. The Chamberlains applied to the Registrar of Land for the caveat to lapse; LSK sought an order that it remain, and the High Court eventually dismissed the firm’s application. Judge Johnston concluded that LSK could not justify its caveat because it had no foundation for any claim to an interest in the land that was not covered by its mortgage security, therefore the basis for maintaining the caveat no longer existed. He also noted that LSK’s claim was for a greater amount than it was when it registered the mortgage, essentially because of accumulating interest and escalating costs. “I do not accept that that alters the position. LSK’s arguable interest in the land extends only to the debt due under the contract.” LSK has now taken its bid to the Court of Appeal which was scheduled to hear arguments later this month. O P E N

Big brothers bring big changes Max Frethey Eleven-year-old Jadon Burgess’ confidence has grown since he began spending time with Lloyd Tibble. Lloyd is Jadon’s big brother mentor and they’ve been meeting up once a week since November 2020. The Big Brothers Big Sisters programme pairs adult mentors with children in need of a positive role model. Jadon’s mum Rebekah says that Jadon’s dad isn’t in the picture

and so he’s been missing a stable male figure in his life. “It’s been great having that positive role model about.” Lloyd, who grew up spending a lot of his time outdoors in Golden Bay, says that being a big brother to Jadon and sharing activities with him from his own childhood has been a great experience. “My partner and I have only been together for three years, so I never had children,” Lloyd says. “I wanted to be able to expose a young lad to the same sort of things I did.”

The pair have done a range of activities over the past year from going to the Nelson Speedway and biking on Rabbit Island, to trout fishing at Lake Rotoiti. Jadon says that fishing has been his favourite activity so far. “It’s really fun and you can catch stuff to eat.” Chelsea Routhan, programme director of Nelson Tasman Big Brothers Big Sisters, says that children who receive the mentoring often exhibit greater confidence and form better relationships with others.

Rebekah has noticed this in Jadon. “He’s a lot more settled and a lot more confident.” Jadon agrees. “It’s making my life a lot easier,” he says. “In really nice ways.” However, as beneficial as this programme seems to be for Jadon and many other young boys, there is a severe shortage of male mentors. Jadon’s mum Rebekah says it took about a year and a half for Jadon to be paired with Lloyd. Big Brothers Big Sisters currently

have a waiting list of 54 children who needed mentors, most of them boys. This lack of male mentors has led to the creation of a 22 Men for 2022 campaign in the hopes that more men can be encouraged to sign up as mentors for the programme. Lloyd says that the benefit of the programme isn’t only felt by the children. “Initially, you don’t really think about what you’re getting from it,” he says. “As time goes on you develop a sense of pride for his achievements and what he does and become very supportive of him, you really start to care about him.” He would encourage anyone who is considering becoming a mentor in the programme to do it. “It doesn’t take a lot of time each week to change somebody’s life,” Lloyd says. “I look forward to seeing Jadon every week. I’m important in his life, he’s important in my life. “It’s a sense of fulfilment for only a few hours a week.” If you are interested in becoming a mentor to a young person in the region, please check out the Big Brothers Big Sisters website: www.bigbrothersbigsisters.org.nz, or give the Nelson Tasman team a ring on 03 545 9864.

Wheels stop turning for long-time car dealer SARA HOLLYMAN When Gary McGregor looks back on his long career selling cars, he says it’s the people he will miss most. Gary has just retired after more than 30 years in the car industry, 22 working for Shane Drummond at The Car Company. Gary first started in the car industry working with Shane for Houston Motors in Motueka. Having injured his leg working in the orchard industry, Gary found himself off work for a few months. “I knew Shane personally then, and needed something to stop me going crazy, so I asked him if I could go down to the Motueka yard of Houston Motors and wash cars for a few hours a day, for no pay.” The rest is history. “I was never knowledgeable about cars, cars were just cars to me and probably still are, I just enjoy talking to people and helping them find what they want.” He says there’s no specific car he’s sold that stands out to him. “There are some cars I sold when I first started, you wouldn’t mind owning a few of them nowadays, because they’re probably worth tenfold now.” Shane says Gary is his longest

Being a poor sleeper he says he’d rather be at work being useful than waiting around at home having a cup of coffee.

“I’ve talked to people on the yard at 6am who have come back later that day and purchased the car.” Shane says that’s just one of the things that makes Gary unique. Gary has been The Car Company’s major representative in Golden Bay, attending the local A&P Show every year, except when it was cancelled due to Covid-19 in 2021. He has also spearheaded the charity golf competition in the bay for the past 25 years,

raising much-needed funds for Tākaka Netball, the rugby club and Tākaka Primary School, something he will continue to do even after retirement. “I always say, I work in Nelson, sleep in Motueka and socialise in Golden Bay.” Gary has sold cars to three generations of some families in the region, and he says he will miss the job so much he has decided to stay on as a casual employee.

“To have a guy with his knowledge; most people when they go, they’ve gone the day they hand their notice in, but he’s the total opposite of all that,” Shane says Gary says now that he’s retired, he’s looking forward to heading to Queenstown to visit one of his grandsons, who is now a greenkeeper at Millbrook Resort – home of the New Zealand open. “What better way to visit my grandson than at the NZ Open.”

We have had the most amazing few days down here, everyone that we have met has been great ambassadors for your region, from Charlie at Helicopters Nelson, Jeremy & Annie at the Distillery (we went back in the afternoon for some tastings), Neil & his wife Katrina at Ratanui Lodge (beautiful accommodation), Glen from car hire at Golden Bay Air, Zane from Wine, Art, Wilderness was exceptional .The guys at Cable Bay Adventures (what a thrilling experience). The helpful volunteers at Brook Waimarama Sanctuary, what a stunning and interesting place. The Rutherford Hotel in Nelson was a perfect central location for our stay and we were warmly welcomed by all the staff. The hotel was so close to so many fabulous eating options and of course the great shopping at Morrison Square. We loved it all & have some great memories of a wonderful weekend. We thought our fabulous weekend had come to an end & we had lots of wonderful memories & photos to remember it by, THEN …. 3 of the most beautiful gift boxes arrived at our door when we returned home, filled with incredible yummy goodies, delicious wines & beautiful smelling soaps, candles, hand creams & body lotions. We were totally in awe of everything in it & wanted to say the biggest thank you to Uniquely Nelson and all your wonderful suppliers & local producers down there. We will enjoy absolutely everything in them. What an incredible treat. Thanks again for all your wonderful organising , especially in these uncertain times. We will certainly never forget it. Opinion

Opinion Where are the discounts? Why are Nelson pensioners being ripped off by Countdown? There are 66 locations throughout New Zealand that offer a 5 per cent discount for Super Gold card holders every Tuesday, but not one Countdown store in Nelson offers the same discount. In Blenheim, Countdown offers the 5 per cent discount on any Tuesday of the month. There is only one way to ensure that we are no longer prepared to be classified as second class by not shopping at Countdown and boycotting all their stores in Nelson until they offer the same 5 per cent discount as applies to their other 66 stores. This is more relevant in today’s times especially with the ever-increasing costs in food and grocery lines which will not decrease for a long time if ever. Wayne Mclaughlan Mission to restore a Toi Toi treasure: I walk past daily, enjoying watching the progress. Teressa O’Brien

Have your say: sara@topsouthmedia.co.nz facebook.com/nelsonweekly

Hunt for Marg’s saviour: I hope you get better soon Marg and back on your bike. You play a great part in the Nelson community with researching and writing up short articles on Nelson history for two Facebook pages. It doesn’t go unnoticed. Anne Cooper

volunteers that have been working hard in this shop. Viv Mehrtens

Pleased to learn that you are mending well. Cheers. Sue Curnow

That’s understandable, but very sad. The hospital itself benefited from the proceeds - staff, patients and whanau could have a wee treat in stressful times. It didn’t encourage ‘unhealthy’ eating. Miriam Martin

Unfortunately, this has been coming for months, and the hospital loses a lot of funding by it closing too. Shot themselves in the foot really. Kelly Watson

What an incredible story. Some scratch! Nice to see people helping in all the right times and places. Nicola Gardiner All the best Marg. Hope you are able to find your knight in shining armour to say thanks in person. Karen Stade Sending aroha Marg, you big hearted, fierce wahine! Hope you are back on your bike very soon. Halcione Hoare

Be awesome to see the results once completed. Sarah Robinson

Alleged bach arsonist ‘insane’: Everything about this story is just very sad. I hope the person gets the help he needs, and I feel terrible for the folks who lost such a special place. Maggie Mcgill

Wow, good luck. It looks like a lot of renovation. Elisabeth Bouvet

Poor guy. l hope he gets all the help he needs and deserves. Stuart James Bell

Hospital shop closes after 30 years: Thank you, Dick and team, for all your valuable work through the years, you will be missed. Ailsa Gillin Will really miss the lovely volunteers and have been missing the 50 cent mixtures for a while now. Shona Brougham I loved chatting to the volunteers when I worked there. I think this is a huge mistake. Only DHB with no shop for patients and families. Shocking they have let this happen. Wendy Thomas Very sad. Thank you, and to all the other

I loved that shop. Best part of the hospital. Arawhita Wiringi What a joke. Danny Oliver I loved their toys. Sad to see it go. Allison Walker Neilson Aww. Sad to hear. I remember the shop when it was by the old A and E. Joeline Davies Very sad news. Linda Mary Macgregor There should be a 24-hour chemist and shop at the front of the hospital. Dave Enting

My mum Nicky Rowland came on board as a co-owner just before we opened, and my brother and sister work here, too.” says Karl. “We are thankful to locals for their continued support. What you can do to be more environmently friendly? There are lots of small, achievable changes that ordinary New Zealanders can make to help lower our ecological footprints. It's up to you to decide which work for you, but here are a few ideas: 1. Use public transport, walk, or cycle - around 20% of New Zealand's emissions come from transport. Even just not driving one day a week can make a big difference. 2. Choose renewable electricity - around three quarters of New Zealand's electricity comes from renewable sources, and WWF's modelling has shown that we could reach 100% renewable electricity by 2025. Some New Zealand electricity companies are powered

by 100% renewable electricity - where does your power come from? 3. Don't waste electricity - You've probably already changed your lightbulbs to LEDs or compact fluorescant bulbs, but it's still great to turn them off when you're not in the room. It also helps to unplug appliances at the wall, wash clothes in cold water (which is often better for the clothes too!) and not use a clothes dryer unnecessarily. 4. Cut waste and recycle - This one's a big win-win. What's good for the world's ecosystems is good for the climate. Rubbish sent to the landfill emits methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

Let Your Love Grow

6. Eat differently - About half of New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions come from animal agriculture. Eating locallygrown, organic food makes a difference, and cutting out meat and animal products can make an even bigger change. Can you have a plantbased diet just one day a week?

THE PATENT PENDING ECO SCATTERINGTM URN HAS QUICKLY BECOME THE LEADING NEW SCATTERING URN ON THE MARKET:

At Simplicity Funerals we are constantly looking at environmentallyfriendly options to offer our families. Let Your Love Grow and our Eco Urn ranges are two popular choices for this. Let Your Love Grow is suitable for use with newer or older ashes, and all packaging is biodegradable and recyclable. It is also NZ made. Our popular Eco scattering tubes are highly functional and easy to use and have been designed to express honour for our loved ones and the earth. • Eco-Friendly and 100% biodegradable • Made from sustainable bamboo • Proprietary open/close locking top (no hardware!) allows families to transport ashes safely and to scatter with control without the risk of spilling! Reduce, reuse and recycle has been the main mantra at Greenwaste to Zero for the past 17 years. The locally owned and operated, family-run company, based in Richmond, provides green waste recycling services to the region, producing organic compost useful for gardens, landscaping, horticulture and agriculture. Their 100% organically-produced compost is made using the Windrow method. An extremely labour-intensive, but effective way to ensure a quality product is produced. Co-owner, Colleen Wastney, says there has been a noticeable increase of environmental awareness. “There has definitely been a boost in that area, but we can always do more.” Greenwaste to Zero also continue to offer collection services for verified compostable products to local businesses looking to help create a more sustainable environment. Organically made ‘Lawnpost’ compost, bark, pea straw, garden mulch and topsoils are available along with gravels, river stones, chips and rock suitable for all landscaping needs. A variety of trailers are also available for hire. Contact Greenwaste to Zero on 544 8857 or email: info@greenwastezero.co.nz www.greenwastezero.co.nz Locally owned and operated, Alaron Products has partnered with clients to develop a multitude of high-quality health care products for over 25 years. Encouraging staff members to leave their cars at home, Alaron offer employees $5 per day to those who choose to walk, bike, bus or carpool. Alaron is exploring partnering with a local e-bike supplier to offer staff great options to purchase an e-bike. The company has also just installed 810 solar panels, the largest solar system in Te Tauihu. Dylan Adams, Alaron’s head of HR, says the installation of a heat exchange system will reduce the company's gas consumption by 90%. “This captures the heat generated by our air handling systems and reuses this energy to heat our hot water.” “We are also working to establish a complete and robust waste diversion policy, alongside our normal recycling plan, working with other business to reuse waste.” This includes repurposing cardboard packaging and supporting local Restore Charity Shop.

Local couple believe the future of transportation is electric Local couple Andrew and Sherie Schwass, owners of Electrify NZ Nelson, understand the need kiwis have to explore our beautiful country and, with fuel prices soaring, offer an alternative for day-to-day commuting. Their new business, Electrify NZ Nelson, is situated near the Nelson I-Site. Director Andrew has been operating the successful bike rental company, Kiwi Journeys, for the last 12 years and says it is obvious that e-bikes are the future of cycling. “So many people ride our electric bikes at Kiwi Journeys, and then want one for themselves, so it was a natural progression to open the local specialised store, Electrify NZ Nelson.” Andrew, a successful businessman and first-class cricketer, says he has seen the popularity of e-bikes explode in the Nelson region. “Nelson is one of the e-bike hotspots in New Zealand. We have great weather and great riding opportunities”. According to data collected between 2014 and 2020, New Zealand’s e-bike imports skyrocketed from 2,000 units a year to 50,000 units. And, he says, as kiwis continue to face Covid restrictions, the demand for Kiwi Journeys multi-day tours increased an unprecedented 300 per cent over the last 12 months. “I’ve seen the growth in our rental business, and I think the same trends are driving the growth in e-bikes,” says Andrew. “People want to get outside and explore our country and e-bikes are the perfect way to do that.” Electrify NZ Nelson is locally owned and stock several major e-bike brands including Haibike and KTM, as well as NZ-designed Black and Smartmotion electric bikes. Options are available that cater to all riding styles and budgets, from $2499 up to high-end electric mountain bikes. They have just launched the newest range, Black GT & Tempo city and commuter bikes, perfectly designed for the daily traveller. “These 45kmh-capable e-bikes are the ultimate answer to urban e-bike transportation.” Andrew and Sherie encourage locals to pop in and see the range for themselves. “Come in and take our bikes for a decent test ride!” As an added bonus, all e-bike purchases from Electrify NZ Nelson receive a free 12 month pass on the Mapua Ferry. It was important for Kimi Ora to find ways to reduce their emissions where possible but also acknowledging that some emissions may be temporality be impossible to eliminate. Caring for the environment and teaching others how to live more sustainably is at the very heart of why Tim started Tim’s Garden back in 2016. With a passion to improve both built and natural environments, as well as developing long-term sustainable solutions, it was only natural that his business Tim’s Garden based its core philosophy around organics, edibles, permaculture, natives, and ensuring each decision is ecologically conscious. Follow Tim’s Garden principles at home by: • Removing the use of harsh chemical sprays, instead, use certified organic products as required or focus on an organic composting system to replenish your soil. • Composting as much of your food scraps and green waste as possible. • Integrate edible areas into your garden. Growing your own food can reduce the need for wasteful packaging, create a reduction in food miles and ensure you are eating seasonally. • Shop with sustainable products in mind, reduce waste and reduce unnecessary travel. • Work with your local conditions, including seasonality, and plant natives which support and welcome biodiversity into your garden. Smart Phone Repair are hyper-aware of the part they play in keeping the environment happy. Nelson teams dominate GODZone JACK MALCOLM The Nelson team of Nathan Fa’avae, Sophie Hart, Chris Forne and Stu Lynch has won the 710km GodZone adventure race with a time of 5d 23h 55m. Racing in the flagship ‘pure’ category, they finished ten-and-a-half hours ahead of second place, with some teams taking over eight days to finish the back-breaking course that traversed from East to West coasts, starting near Haast and finishing in Dunedin. Avaya was one of two Nelson teams to complete the pure long course, with Team Gearshop finishing 11th. Team Gearshop featured Dean Velenski, Rachel Baker, Martin Peat and Jamie Russ. Only 14 of the 68 teams completed the long course. Avaya team captain Nathan Fa’avae sat down with the Nel-

son Weekly to answer a Q&A on the GodZone as he prepares for his next challenge, organising an all women’s adventure race this weekend.

We were basically having four hours a night, except for that first day. We had 20 hours of sleep for the whole race. You condition for what the challenge is and what we’re taking on.

What was the hardest stage, and why? Every stage has its challenges, but if I had to single one out it would be stage three. It took us into our first night and was the longest stage, passing through the Southern Alps. How do you prepare for a race like this? We have to be fit, strong and capable for every discipline. Generally, training for a big event like this is 20-to-30 hours a week for a good three months before. It’s a big time investment, but we love doing it.

Team captain Nathan Fa’avae, who has adventure raced for over twenty years, said they went for stretches of up to 136 hours without seeing another team from their category on their nearly six day journey. Photo: Sean Beale. Does working in a team change the dynamics of the race? For us, a large appeal is you’re in a team sharing the experience with people. It’s a long time out in the

wilderness, and safety-wise too, it’s important. How much sleep did you get each night?

What was your highlight? Obviously, one is winning the race. We’re a racing team and our current team has never been beaten, so it’s nice to keep that legacy. Along the way the small things, too. You can’t cross the South Island and not see some beautiful landscape. How were the emotions as you crossed the line after such a gruelling six days? A sense of jubilation that we achieved our goal and relief that we’re finished. It can feel like a long time out there, and it’s never really over until it’s over.

Cooper hits homerun with US scholarship Cooper Grant is one step closer to his Major League Baseball dreams after signing with Cochise College in Arizona. The Nelson Heat player will head to the desert state later this year to play ball and continue his academic studies. Also a quality first-five, Cooper opted to end a promising rugby career as he looks to follow in the footsteps of his father and legendary Black Sox pitcher, Marty Grant. “I’m definitely excited. A bit nervous but mainly excited. I know every day will be different to what I’m used to but it’s a great opportunity to play, to study and to travel, and I knew I had to make the most of it.” Cooper says, with Cochise College’s combination of win history and coaching prowess, it meant an easy choice among the offers. “Cochise has the athletic programme and development I was looking for. It offers the most competitive baseball, and the coach has given me the chance to be a two-way player, meaning I get to hit and pitch. It felt like the best opportunity for me.” Nelson Heat president Rachel Knowles says Cooper has great drive and ambition and his success is a direct result of

Powerboats race to glory at National Championships JACK MALCoLM High octane racing was a highlight of the weekend at the National Powerboat Championships held on Lake Rotoiti. With racers reaching top speeds of over 250km an hour, spectators dotted the shoreline to watch the side-by-side racing in pristine conditions on Saturday. Organizer and Rotoiti Powerboat Club president Chris Dufeu said they were determined to hold the event under the current COVID settings, which required a lot of co-operation between the club, DOC, the spectators and the competitors. Watching the crowd enjoy the spectacle of the powerboats taking corners at such high speeds while being so close to each other that they sometimes touched made all the hard work worth it, he said. “I’m super proud of the hard work put in by all volunteers on the day to put on a hugely successful National Championship, with over 60 boats competing.” The local club crowned four national champions at the event, with Julian Stilwell taking home the F1 title, Wayne Wells winning the New Zealand Grand Nationals title, Lee Merrion winning the F3 title and Tate Burns winning the New Zealand Clubmans title. Sunday’s club trophy racing had to be cancelLed due to poor weather and will have to be held next year because the club receives one permit for an event each year, said Dufeu. “We’ve run the nationals three of the last four years. Our water is very good water to race on and we choose March because that’s when the weather’s normally most settled. Sunday looked more like an ocean than a lake. It wasn’t forecasted.” All of the National Championship events were held on Saturday and were not affected by Sunday’s cancellation.

Leigh returns to netball roots Jonty Dine

Leigh Gibbs understands that quality coaches, attract more players. The gold medalist and world champion coach is stepping down from her role as Nelson Netball general manager as she looks to help grow the game she loves on a national scale. Leigh will take on the position of community coaching manager for Netball New Zealand, giving her oversight across the whole county at community level. “It’s what you see out on the courts every weekend, so this was an opportunity for me to focus on my passion area, so that was hard to resist.” She describes the move as a bit of a ‘back to the future,’ as in a previous role she was overseeing ‘coach force,’ a system for delivery of coaching into centres throughout New Zealand. The former Silver Ferns captain says she will put a strong emphasis on developing “the people who develop the

coaches”. “If you’re directly working with coaches, you just couldn’t cover the number of coaches you’d be needing to work with.” Her ambition is to bring more quality, capability, and ultimately, more coaches to the game. Leigh also hopes to maintain a presence at Nelson Netball. “By being at the coalface, I’m experiencing the requirements I am asking people to deliver on. If you can keep your pencil sharp in the actual practice of coach development, you are a lot more aware of what is needed.” She says quality coaching translates to players having a better experience. “Talk to any player who has been around most will reference a really great coach who has instilled their love of the game.” Leigh says she is leaving Nelson Netball in a healthy posi-

tion. “It has been a tough period for all sports but last year actually had growth at secondary school level which is against trend.” She credits this to schools creating systems that players want to be a part of. Leigh is also proud of the fact that 2022 will see the introduction of a first-ever men’s netball team to premier competition. “Sport has had a rocky road because of Covid, but we know participation in sport is good for the well-being of the whole community.” Register your interest for the season here: http://www.ne lsonnetball.co.nz/

CRUSADERS vs BLUES

Stoke/Nayland dispatch Wakatu Jack MalcolM A strong team performance has seen Stoke/Nayland dispatch Wakatu to finish second on premier cricket’s regular-season leaderboard. Batting first, Stoke/Nayland rallied behind an unbeaten 70 runs from Darius Skeaping to post 217/8 from their 50 overs. Despite a tricky Victory Square wicket, the team won by 92 runs. Stoke/Nayland Club manager Brendon Hodgson said they thought the total was above par. “Darius probably thought he was batting a bit slow, but it was a really good score on a tough wicket.” Wakatu had their moments in the first innings, but they were too few and far between as they struggled to find breakthroughs through the middle of the innings to slow the momentum. Campbell McLean was outstanding with the ball, rounding off the innings with figures of 3/6 from two overs, but it was too little too late. Wakatu struggled to make any real headway with the bat, with McLean also being the best of the batsmen with 32 runs from 63 balls before being removed from the bowling of Liam Clark. Clark’s off-spin was almost impossible to hit on the dry and tricky wicket, taking three wickets for just 12 runs from his six overs. Stoke/Nayland was ruthless in punishing their opponents’ mistakes, with the first nine wickets of the second innings being catches. Wakatu stalwart Campbell McLean said they were outplayed by a better side on the weekend, having missed the influence of several key players who were away with sickness. “It wasn’t great. . . we found it a bit harder than they did. Sometimes it’s hard to get an idea (of the game) from a scoreboard, but this weekend it was a bit easy to read.”

Stoke captain Dylan Eginton led from the front in their 92 run win over Wakatu over the weekend, taking two wickets for 20 runs from his six overs as they dismissed their opponents for just 125 runs having been set 218 to win. Photo: Evan Barnes/ Shuttersport. In their recap of the weekend on social media, the Wakatu team brushed off the result as they look towards the sudden-death semifinals next weekend. “A sneaky ploy from our Seniors on Saturday. Play poorly and give ACOB a false sense of security.” McLean said they were excited to be entering the knock-out stages of the competition, saying anything can happen on the day. Hodgson said it was good to have the team perform at the right end of the season, with the “old battlers” in the team all chipping in to get the victory. “The boys had a disaster of a season by our standards. It’s a chance to right the wrongs from earlier in the season and get a trophy in our cabinet.” In the other game of the weekend, Athletic College Old Boys took less than 13 overs to chase down Nelson College’s 101 to win by nine wickets. Waimea Toi Toi United defeated Wanderers/Motueka by default.

Valued Team brings Wealth of Experience

Three years ago, Brendon and Rochelle Mathews first opened The Bike Station in central Nelson and today the vibrant, expanding business has fantastic stock and a passionate, experienced team. Rochelle says contrary to what some may think, Ebikes aren’t a lazy option. “Ours are pedal-electric, so you still have to pedal but you get assistance as

you need it, so they’re suited to anyone, including those with a medical condition. “Using an E-bike allows me to get uphill quickly and ride for longer. They’re great enablers. I can do a

Staff are a massive part of The Bike Station. “Without them, we wouldn’t be here today,” Rochelle says. From the outset, Brendon and Rochelle have been focussed on having high-quality staff and, because they all have significant experience with bikes, the couple have 100% faith in their ability to provide fantastic service. Yohann, who is from the UK, says, “It’s been useful to experience how bike shops operate in other countries, including New Zealand. I picked Nelson because of its awesome mountainbiking trails and The Bike Station had cool brands, a nice workshop and it’s a great place to work.” Meanwhile, two-time national track cycling champion and national record

holder Kaio, loves working at The Bike Station while teaching young bike enthusiasts (in schools) how to ride and it helps build up the local junior base. Hunter, who has recently left college has been working fulltime at the store since November last year. “I’ve done a lot of mountainbike racing, so my passion has inspired me to work here as a bike mechanic and be part of the mountainbiking community. It’s an awesome business and getting to work on bikes all day long is great.” Lindsay, who has been with The Bike Station for just under two years, says he had been looking to get back into the bike industry as a mechanic after a stint in Whistler, Canada. “This is a nice place to work; a good bunch of guys. They have the same kind of passion that I have for mountainbiking, so it’s a no-brainer really.” Finally, Sam began working for the business in December after moving from Auckland. “I started as a customer and ended up working here; I love the team; we all get on well. It’s always a good sign of a great workplace
