But new police chief likes what he sees in the sunshine city
Andrew Board The region’s new area commander will usher in a new wave of policing, where preventing crime and victimisation is the “golden egg” and he is starting with family violence and alcoholrelated crime. Inspector Steve Greally is now in his second week on the job as Nelson Bays area commander. He says he is impressed with what he has seen so far and is looking forward to getting stuck in to his new job. A former airline pilot, Steve has been in the police force for less than 12 years but brings a strong background to Nelson, having previously worked closely with new deputy commissioner, Mike
Bush, in his former area of Counties-Manukau. He says shifting the focus of policing from responding to prevention will be his biggest priority. “If we put prevention at the beginning of everything we do, right at the front of the equation, we will go a long way towards reducing victimisation. Our aim is to prevent people in our community becoming victims of crime at any level.” He says two key areas to target include family violence and alcohol related crime. “From what I can see at the moment we have an issue with family violence, it’s not out of control, but it’s an issue. We need to ensure

Nelson rallies behind sick son The mother of a cancer-stricken Nelson boy is overwhelmed with generosity of Nelsonians eager to help her son fight a life-threatening tumour. Phoenix Stafford, 9, was diagnosed with a rare cancerous tumour, called Ewings Sarcoma of the spinal cord, in September 2010. It was removed and followed by 10 months of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Once his treatment finished, he went in for a routine MRI scan which re-
vealed another tumour, this time around the spinal cord, making it too risky to remove. Doctors sent Phoenix back for more chemotherapy and radiation treatment but it failed to shrink the tumour. In fact it continued to grow. Phoenix’s mum Renea Pidduck, with the help of her extended family and friends, is now raising money for alternative treatment, which is not funded by the government. they have raised the $6000 needed for specialised blood tests and are now raising money to pay for whichever treatment the blood tests reveal will work best. Last week the family started a Facebook page which has already attracted more than 600 people, many donating money and sending information to the family.

Over the weekend, family members and friends took to the streets of Nelson with buckets and collected more than $2500 in around two hours. “That 99 just blew$22 me99away, that complete$20 strangers actually care about us and about Phoenix. People were so generous; it was a really humbling experience,” says Renea. Trolley derby date confirmed for 2012 The popular Robertson’s Trolley Derby is back for 2012, with oragnisers confirming its date this week. Gilbert Robertson, from event sponsor Robertson Chartered Accountants, says registrations are now open for the iconic
event, which will be held on March 17 – St Patrick’s Day. “Registrations are already coming in for this year’s event, and we are aiming for the same number of racers as 2011, which was 100,” says Gilbert. Earlier this year, a movie about

Attempting a world record Wakefield’s Chris Rae will be attempting the world record for the fastest stock two letre car to complete a quarter mile. He will attempt the feat at the 4 and Rotary Nationals in Auckland later this month. Photo: Phillip Rollo. In two week’s time Chris Rae could be the first person in the world to drive a stock two-litre down a quarter mile track in less than 9.47 seconds. Chris, a farrier from Wakefield, has set his sights, and his cheque book, on being the first person to achieve the feat and will do it all on Drag Day at the 4 and Rotary Nationals in Meremere, Auckland on January 29. His car, a Mitsubishi Evolution 9, will be able to clock 100 kph in a mere 1.6 seconds and can reach top speeds of 260 kph, even more impressive considering the car is entirely street legal. Chris admits he has never driven at speeds close to 260 kph, but he’s confident his team at Speedtech Motorsport in Wellington will give him the perfect
chance at breaking the record. “When you think this car has been built for pure acceleration it’s going to be pretty scary,” he says. “I wanted to build a street legal monster that if I went up the traffic lights against a Porche or a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, I would smoke it. I wanted to have one of the fastest cars in the country and that’s what it’s going to be. A ten second car is something really, really fast. But a nine second car is something ridiculous.” So how do you make a car go faster using the same engine that comes out of the factory? “We’re spending lots and lots of money; we’ve added 2000cc injectors, manifolds, fuel rails, cams and gears, new gearboxes and we’re running ethanol fuel instead of normal petrol.”
Chris says the new gearbox will save plenty of time when it comes to the attempt. He won’t have to lift off the accelerator or drop the clutch to change gears. “When you’re getting down to nine and a half seconds and below, every hundredth of a second counts. Instead of a manual shift in a normal car taking half a second to change gear, this gearbox will do it in one hundredth of a second. That makes the big difference.” The car will be putting out the same brake horse power as a Formula 1 car. But the costs of the project have been enormous and so far Chris has had to raise every single cent himself. “Every penny and dime I’ve had has gone into this. I don’t drink or anything so I don’t have lots of bills.”

Big crowds roped in by rodeo action A full house was treated to another spectacular Richmond Rodeo on Saturday afternoon with thrills, spills and a whole heap of Wild West action. Cowboys and cowgirls from all over New Zealand endured a torrid time a top of some of the hardest kicking animals around. Local children also braved the local calf and sheep rides with similar outcomes. A record crowd visited Richmond Park on Saturday for the 50th anniversary of the rodeo, which was formerly held in Motueka. Richmond Rodeo Club secretary Tina Angus-Phyn estimated a crowd of 2000, which is much higher than
in previous times. “We were pretty chock-a-block there.” She put the numbers down to “fantastic advertising in the Nelson Weekly” along with coverage from Richmond Mall and Club Waimea and the weather. “That was a big drawcard for some of the cowboys too. They called in the morning saying ‘it’s pissing down in Dunedin or Christchurch are you still running?’ It was a combination of good advertising, our jubilee and we had extra money up for the cowboys.” While some locals tried their hand, it was the out of town cowboys and girls that took home the biggest of the open division purses.

Singing for Olympic glory A song written by Nelson's John Phillips could be sung by millions of New Zealanders when the 2012 London Olympics comes around. The song, Ma Te Mahi Ka Ora, was initially written for John’s latest album The Lost Property Box, until he came across a songwriting competition to find the New Zealand Olympic theme song. Ma Te Mahi Ka Ora was written as an inspirational song that speaks of setting goals and working hard to achieve these goals, he says. The rules stated the song must be an original and
John believed it carried the same values of community spirit. The song is now through to the final ten and some of the voting has been put in the public’s hands. From that voting, five songs will go forward to join the five voted from the first Anthem In Black album. Those ten will be voted on in March 2012 to decide the song of the Games. To vote, visit www.facebook.com/nzolympicteam and follow the NZ2012 Contests link.

Stop the holidays, get teachers back in the classroom I hate my job sometimes. As I sit here typing away, the sun is blearing outside, not a breath of wind – a beautiful summer’s day in Nelson. I’m stuck in this office for another few hours trying to make the next deadline. Do you know where three of my friends are? Playing golf. You know why? Because they’re school teachers and get, in my humble opinion, far too much time off. Answer me this: why should the rest of us work 48 weeks of the year while those charged with making sure the next generation has some form of education gets, what, 12 weeks of holidays each year?
It is a joke. Someone tell the government not to worry about national standards, if they want to boost reading and writing comprehension all they have to do is not send our students on holiday every other month. Then there are the poor parents. As full of life, inquisitive and cute as children are, by the end of a six week break I think most parents will be counting the hours until the start of term. I wonder how many frazzled mums will be popping open the bubbly, or relaxing on the couch, when little Johnny
Unlocked cars and houses targeted
Police have recently attended a number of burglaries and thefts from insecure cars and homes. Sergeant Shane Miles says around 40 per cent of thefts from cars in Nelson occur when the vehicle has been left unlocked with valuables visible. “Police have had some good apprehensions over the holiday period, with a number of people currently before the courts for burglary and theft, but there a number of simple things the community can do to make it harder for offenders. One of these is secure your home and car.” He says police would also like to see people making greater use of the website www.snap.org.nz, a free online service were members of the public can create a secure account to record descriptions and serial numbers of their valuables which can later be accessed if the property is stolen. “The chances of getting property back, or identifying the person who stole it, are greatly increased where the serial number of stolen property is provided to police,” says Shane.

and Mary head back to school. Now although I don’t have kids, friends of mine do, sisters do and neighbours do and generally I’m a fan of them; I get on with them and they with me. But as a soon-tobe-married man, the prospect of a summer holiday with them all day, every day, does concern me. I just have to look at parents in the supermarket and walking the street with their brood in toe to see it’s a stressful gig. I was talking to a lady on the phone the other day and I inquired about her sum-

mer holiday and if she was indeed having one. The reply shocked me a bit: “ohhhh, six weeks is just too long with no school.” It shocked me because this lady is a wellknown kiddy cheerleader, usually the wonders of her children are spread far and wide and bragged about ad-nauseam. So with tongue firmly planted in cheek, here’s my declaration: Let our parents enjoy their kids and get these lazy teachers off the beach and back in the class. It will make me feel better for one - I hate missing out on golf. Our Town is a fortnightly column written by Nelson Weekly editor Andrew Board.

Vet pens prisoner’s account A Stoke man, who is a retired colonel of the Army, has written a never-before published account of New Zealand prisoners of war in Northern Italy and the Mission Cherokee. But he doesn’t expect all its readers to be totally happy with what they see. Ken Fenton is a World War 2 and Vietnam veteran who served in northern Italy as a 19 year-old. But it wasn’t until after retirement and some Italian lessons that the idea of writing a book sprung up. “I was reading Italian books about the northern region and what the Allied prisoners of war did after the signing of the armistice. An Italian account of conditions of prison camp near Udine was rather rose-tinted, so I decided to publish a more accurate portrayal of it. It doesn’t particularly show all the Italians in a flattering light, some of what happened was pretty atro- WW2 veteran Ken Fenton with his book Alamein to the Alps cious.” which is now for sale from the Nelson RSA. the recent flood. Is this an indication that council has seen the light, and realised that it cannot shove yet another double-digit rate rise onto ratepayers using the flood as an excuse? Rates for many properties have doubled during the last ten years. Council should have been building a contingency fund during this time to take care of an emergency. Any suggestion that there now needs to be another large rate rise has no basis. There is plenty of fat to cut from council expenditure, and this can be done without harming essential services. Councillors and staff will have to realise that the cost/ plus mentality for council spending are over. This is an area for the new Minister for Local Government, Nick Smith, to examine carefully -- not just locally, but throughout New Zealand. Councils have been increasing their spending as if there was no limit to the level they can raise the rates, regardless of ratepayers’ ability to absorb those costs.
It is good to see Nelson City Council reprioritising work after

TO THE EDITOR
Last November Nelson Weekly printed a story about Simulate2Educate, a business that specializes in internet safety. The same evening the story ran, I received phone calls from clients congratulating me on the coverage and in particular the way in which the story had been prepared. The following day we started receiving emails and phone calls from new clients requesting more information on what we offer. This energy, which was created by the story, continued for some time. It has been truly surprising to me to see the readership coverage and positive impact that a story in a local paper can have. Finally I would like to thank you for the excellent coverage and in particular your own research into the content on the story. Keep up the good work, you are an asset to this community.

With Robyn Hollis
Welcome to 2012! What a soggy start to the year it has The photo this week was taken by John while out walking been so far but as I am writing this I am sitting out on Cruze the other day. It is of the Pohutukawas growing the back deck in the beautiful sunshine and thinking that along the Marina walk, which is a favourite spot of Crusummer must be on it’s way finally! ze’s, and he thought they were looking exceptionally good. We had a lovely family time over Christmas and the New Year with much Nana time being spent with baby Benjamin. He is just great – happy, healthy and growing like a mushroom. Unfortunately he is now back in Christchurch being shaken to sleep – I do worry but he takes it all in his stride and all is still well with family there. Cruze (the dog) and I have come back from a walk and I must say the growth on the trees, especially the new plantings of camellias on the railway reserve, is quite amazing. The rain was a real treat for them and they have just about doubled in size, as have a lot of my own evergreens and the fruit trees are just so full of fruit the crops will have to be shared around the Pohutukawas growing along the Marina walk. neighbours this season. Looking around gardens (as I do), some of the plants that Thisks stand out to me at this time of the year are the hydrangeas, wee so full of flower and looking very healthy; the lilies – my neighbours are looking really good; and dahlias, which January is really a maintenance month in the garden. are putting on a great display after good rain. Checking for mites on citrus roses and evergreens, aphids, The banks of agapanthus and red hot pokers that line and looking out for powdery mildew on geraniums, petumany of our streets with their bright blue, purple and nias and soft annuals. All sounds bad but a light spray with white flowers mixed with the yellows and oranges are re- Mite Killer (organic) or Mavrick will deal to mites which ally a part of summer in Nelson. can easily ruin a plant if undetected. Look for yellowing, I know some consider them weeds but I think they make and you may also see a fine webbing on the underside of a real statement and are also very good at binding clay soil young leaves. Check plants growing in hot sunny spots together – something to think about perhaps after recent such as potted plants on decks and patios, as they are most events! at risk. Another pest to look for is mealy bug which also seems to flourish after a damp spell. “Beat a bug” should deal to this but you need to be constant with treatment. Also watch your watering- I know we have had heaps but we will soon need to be checking pots and tubs and also the vege garden, which tends to dry out very quickly. Pots and tubs can be helped with the addition of a couple of

good handfuls of Saturaid sprinkled around the top and watered in. This is a bark based product which draws the water down into the pots and helps keep moisture where it should be, at the roots of the plants. It is also really good to mix into the soil when you are planting out new trees, shrubs, annuals etc. The best time to water is early morning or evening and water deeply to encourage roots to grow deep in the soil. To check if you have it right dig a spade depth down in the area you have watered to see if the soil is moist – you may be surprised! Wettasoil is another product that can be mixed in your watering can and watered into pots and tubs and around the garden to assist with water holding. Make sure to keep weeding as they compete with plants for available water. Raise the cutting height on your lawnmower to reduce stress on your grass and to help hold moisture around the roots. In the vege garden keep picking Zucchini so they continue to produce. Keep sowing beans, lettuce, silverbeet and spring onions. Herbs need constant trimming and renewal to ensure you have good supplies. Keep planting parsley, basil, sage and trim thymes and oreganos to keep new growth coming. Most herbs can be stored by drying or storing in a good olive oil. Basil, coriander and rosemary can all be made into Pesto which will then freeze or hold in the fridge for several weeks. My favourite Pesto is as follows: Pesto Genovese 20 large basil leaves (about 2/3 of the processor bowl) 6 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped 50 grams pine nuts ( or cashew nuts) 125 grams good parmesan cheese – grated 250mls good quality olive oil (I use Supplejack Estate – but we are spoiled for choice here in Nelson) salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste Puree the basil, garlic, pine nuts and cheese with a small amount of the oil in a food processor. With the motor running pour the oil in a steady stream so that the sauce emulsifies. If you like a thicker pesto just stop when it looks right to you. Taste for seasoning. I put this into small containers and freeze so we have the lovely flavours for winter tomato dishes, soups, pastas etc. This is also great with lamb and chicken dishes!! Other variations are coriander and parsley pesto, rocket pesto, walnut pesto – the list is endless. Sorry we have run out of space for Q&A this time but I will answer a query on Potato/tomato psyllid in the next instalment, meanwhile enjoy your gardening but also enjoy the season and remember slip, slop, slap and a hat!! Until next time,

unwind with friends or workmates. Kirsteen and Aaron moved Rob Roy’s to Richmond after their popular restaurant and pub of the same name in Christchurch was destroyed in the earthquakes. Their pub thrived for six years before the quakes hit, but the couple weren’t deterred. Their love of hospitality and customers encouraged them to bring their winning formula up to the Tasman Bays, but their last pub will always be a part of their history and who they are. Featured on the entrance wall of their new bar are pictures of the wreckage of their Christchurch building, as well as a salvaged “Kilkenny” sign that formerly adorned the front of their old premises. They say they are happy with their choice to move their pub here, after they fell in love with Richmond and the people. Their new pub has

Future stars rip it up at Colgate Games Jonas Kale is now the fastest 14 year-old in New Zealand, claiming the Boys 14 100m final at the South Island Colgate Games over the weekend. The win comes just one week after the Nayland College student stunned North Island favourite John Auga in Tauranga to win gold at the North Island Colgate Games. “As I said [last week] I’d be pretty bloody stoked if I could win it, so yeah I’m pretty happy right now,” says Jonas. He says he was more nervous about competing up north, despite plenty of pressure put on the hometown boy at Saxton Oval on Sunday. But winning in Nelson definitely exceeds his efforts in Tauranga, because the South Island title was something he strived for annually. His 100m time was clocked at 11.75 seconds, just outside of his personal best, despite running into another headwind. Jonas believes his times can get even quicker throughout the rest
of the season and will now turn his focus to the Tasman Secondary School Championship in the coming months before Nelson hosts the South Island Secondary School Championship at the end of March. Bailey Cotton, of Stoke, was the top athlete from the Richmond Athletics club winning an astonishing five medals, three of those gold, in the Boys 12 grade. Bailey’s gold medals came in discus, 29.02m, shot-put, 11.03m, and the 800m. Bailey then came second in the 100m with a time of 12.69 seconds and was part of the Grade 13 mixed medley relay which also got second. Bailey will start at Nayland College this year and could be used in the schools 4x100m relay team in years to come. Nelson’s Jordan Stirling-Rowling, 9, who hasn’t been beaten at the Colgate Games in past three years, won four pendants, in the 60m, 100m, 200m and long jump.

Big fleet expected for Nelson Regatta Yachts from Wellington and Marlborough will join a strong local field for the second annual Nelson Regatta, starting this Sunday. The regatta will see America’s Cup-style racing just off the Boulder Bank on the first day. It will then see the fleet race to Torrent Bay in the Abel Tasman, with more racing over there before a final race back to Nelson on Tuesday. Tasman Bay Cruising Club member Kevin Skelton says the regatta is one he is looking forward to. “It’s a good opportunity to line yourself up against boats from other areas and test yourself. I think the regatta is a good concept and hopefully it will become a big event.” Twenty six yachts have already signed up with more Kevin Skelton will be one of the many local boats racing during the Nelson Regatta startexpected. ing this coming Sunday. IN BRIEF rUnning: The boar’s jaw has been won by one of the men who stared it down when it was still attached to a hulking, living boar. The boar had rounded up several Nelson runners until Maitai Dam caretaker Trevor Ruffell slayed it to save the runners. Back then Chris Fitchett was one of the runners caught up in the action, and over the weekend he got his hands on the boar’s jaw which now serves as a trophy for the annual half marathon and 10km run. Chris, along with Lyn Smith, both ran a time just two seconds outside their estimate for the race to jointly win the jaw. Simon Leaning was the fastest runner, the only person to go under 1 hour 20 minutes. Full details including results from Sunday on www.nelsonevents.co.nz

ClivE HAiR CliNiCS Men and women are losing hair in increasing numbers — and experts are blaming today’s fastpaced ‘‘work hardplay hard’’ lifestyles. Clive Hair Clinics have been providing trusted hair loss treatments for over 50 years & have noted around 50 % more clients seeking hair loss treatments now compared with 5-10 years ago, the increase in female clients, being particularly noticeable, now making up over 40% of their clientele. The most common conditions treated are genetic baldness; diffuse loss and Alopecia (see www. cliveclinics.co.nz). There are a great number of myths and
misconceptions about hair loss including that hair loss only affects men or elderly people. However the reality is quite different and hair loss begins earlier than you would think. Men usually start showing signs of baldness in their 20s, whereas women do not usually start losing hair till their 30s. By their 40s, around 40% of men are going bald while women do not usually suffer hair loss in such numbers till they reach their 50s. Whatever the cause of the hair loss the earlier that treatment is started the better the results. If you are suffering hair loss or scalp problems you can contact Clive Clinics on 0800 233 384 for advice.
