Illegal fire users on notice Andrew Board Some illegal home fire users have been given a final warning to find a new heat source or face a $300 fine as part of a clamp down by Nelson City Council. Older wood burning fires in the region have been phased out as part of a plan to clean up the city’s air pollution. Many had to be upgraded by a certain date or that

home would lose the right to use one, even if it was still in the home. That date has passed for all homes and the council has started to enforce its bylaw, issuing abatement notices to around a dozen homes, with more to come. The council’s manager of environmental inspection, Stephen Lawrence says the notices give users of illegal fireplaces six weeks to find alternative heating or they

will face a fine of $300. He says the enforcement programme has only just begun but it is likely staff will walk the streets to see if smoke is coming from homes they know do not have a compliant fire. “It’s keeping faith with the people that have done the right thing and the good news is air pollution has dropped significantly in Nelson so that’s a good thing,” he says. The enforcement programme to identify

non compliant fires has been running for a fortnight now and the council checks off those who have had new fires or heat pumps put in their homes. Council staff then use their records to find the homes that haven’t upgraded, make contact with them and talk over the options.

Moving 150,000 library books

Anna Gully and Sarah Fry from the Elma Turner Library in Nelson prepare to move every single book in the library ahead of its makeover this week. Photo: Andrew Board.

Staff at Nelson’s largest library will be pulling each of its 150,000 books off the shelves for its $30,000 makeover this week. The Elma Turner Library on Halifax St is closed from July 16 until July 22 for the upgrade, which will see new carpet and paint put in and a reshuffle of the library’s layout. Library management have planned the makeover near the beginning of the financial year so they could pull funding from two years to pay for the upgrade. Carpet, paint and furniture were paid for last year while the labour will be from this year’s budget. Circulation team leader Sarah Fry says the “nip and tuck” of the library will mean each of its 150,000 books will need to be taken off shelves, stored and repacked, a mammoth task for the 25 staff that will be working on it each day. “It’s not just moving them but keeping them in order and storing them somewhere. The person unpacking the shelf has to think about how it will be unpacked. It’s a military operation really.”

Illegal fire users on notice “In due course we will do cross checks by going out and doing a visual inspection to see if there is smoke coming out of the chimney. If they fail to comply they run the risk of an infringement fine and if they continued we could get an enforcement order from the Environment Court or we could prosecute but we hope we never have

to go that far,” he says. Stephen says the council does not know how many homes are not compliant as the enforcement programme has just started. But around 15 abatement notices have been sent. “The council view is that this whole thing has been pretty well published and notified over the years that the phase out has been carried out,” he says.

Moving 150,000 library books FROM PAGE 1 The Stoke and Tahunanui libraries will still be open during the work for those that need their library fix and they are asking people to hold onto their books until it reopens. Support services team leader Anna Gully says they have listened to feedback from users and will be using the break to rearrange the library, including putting all of the noisier activities in one area. “It’s trying to balance the needs of our different customers. We’ve got people who want to Skype and talk to their friends and relatives and play a bit of music and that sort of thing and we have folk that want to do some serious study or read quietly in a corner so we are trying to create these zones,” she says. Among some of the key features will be a language area and a quiet space where people can read magazines while overlooking the Maitai River, along with more quiet spaces at either end of the library.

School targeted over holidays news in BRIEF

Four teenagers have been forwarded on to Youth Aid following a spate of vandalism in Richmond on the weekend of July 8 and 9. The four teenagers were picked up by police following reports of many damaged letterboxes in residential streets on Hill St, Churchill Ave and Appaloosa Ave. They were also suspected of further

vandalism and disorderly behaviour at Waimea College on the same evening. Sergeant Dave Prentice, of Nelson, says the four youths were “causing concern” and “acting like idiots”. The incidents were likely to be specific to school holidays. There was a previous incident at Richmond School more than one week ear-

lier, where five buildings were tagged with marker pens. “They were quite specific in what they wrote, it was people’s names.” Waimea College associate principal Graeme Smith says some windows were scratched and plants ripped out around the school grounds during the two week holiday period.

Seniors celebrate Bastille Day

corrEcTion: In May Nelson Weekly reported on the Maori Ward proposal. In the article we reported that councillor Rachel Reese said former CEO Keith Marshall “misled council”. Ms Reese did not say that, it was our summation of her statements in an email circulated by supporters. We apologise to Ms Reese and Mr Marshall for the error.

French flare was in full flight over the past few days, as Nelsonians celebrated Bastille Day, France’s national holiday. Last Thursday around 60 members of the Stoke Senior Citizens group celebrated with a movie and French-themed lunch at its hall in Stoke, including Dot Wills, left, and Barbara Halse pictured. Several of the diners dressed up in the tri-colours of France as the group watched movies and enjoyed French music. On Sunday the Nelson Pétanque Club also hosted Bastille Day celebrations, dressing in French-themed clothes and inviting members of the public to come and the play the game, invented in France. Music festival flying high Nelsonians are keeping spirits high this winter with the excitement of the Nelson School of Music Winter Festival. There have already been some standout performances, with many full houses and standing ovations. “We couldn’t ask for much more,” says Frances McElhinney, manager of the NSOM. The festival opened with some “pearler” concerts, including a performance by Maxwell Vanilau, Mark Warren and Louis Baker that was produced specifically for the festival. “It was stunning, they received an immediate standing ovation,” says Frances. There will be 20 shows in the festi-

val calendar, with another week to come. Student performances will begin the week on Wednesday. “We had a lot of people who hadn’t been before coming to see the concert last year and then again this year, seeing the children growing up and developing, seeing their progress. It’s gaining momentum, so that’s great,” says Frances. Nelson’s first poetry slam will be held on Thursday from 7.30pm. Frances says this will be an event not to miss, with winners going through to the national finals in Wellington on September 29. “This is a new style of poetry and it’s really gripped the twenty to mid-thirties age bracket. "Poetry’s just had this huge revival. The way it’s delivered, it’s almost a full body experience. It’s passionate. It’s really inspiring to watch them performing it. They also encourage the audience to get into it, it’s quite energetic. It’s really taken off, it’s great,” says Frances. The Thomas Oliver Band is going to grace the NSOM stage on Saturday night from 7.30, with Frances praising them as New Zealand’s top emerging band. “They’re brilliant. He’s baaaack! Stanton answers his critics

From My Desk School holidays finished for me with a weekend of catching up around the house, unpacking the holiday bags, storing away the snow gear and making sure the school bags were prepared for the start of a new term. At Fashion Island the gardeners have been trimming our hedges and tidying the phoenix palms and gardens and paths. The stores are having winter sales and often you will pass store team members with coffees in hand chatting about exciting happenings in each of their own stores. I dropped by The Body Shop yesterday to say ‘hi’ to Karen and her team. With the heating up high at home and in my office it was a good excuse to buy some moisturizer and nourishing body butter. On display is the new Lily Cole range in divine pinks which includes shimmer cubes and radiance puffs, making a bright cheerful addition to my purchases. I am looking forward to seeing you at my Fashion Island

Protestor Lewis Stanton has returned to his regular spot on Trafalgar St after spending a month in jail for refusing to do court-imposed community service. Lewis’ 18 month long protest has caught the attention of the region, with his insistence that the council confiscating his horse and cart after continually camping on council land is “ungrounded.” He says he isn’t going anywhere until his horse and cart are returned unconditionally and doesn’t understand why people are so offended by his protest. “I’d sooner be out living my lifestyle, that’s the ultimate. With my horse and cart, freedom camping. Well, freedom living,” Lewis told Nelson Weekly. Lewis was sentenced to two months in jail after he failed to compete any of his community service for assault, and charges of trespass and graffiti. Hoping to end his year and a half long protest, the Nelson City Council has floated the idea of returning his horse and cart with certain conditions including no open fires, no more than three nights in any one place. Lewis says it is a breach of his

He says he doesn’t understand why people are fed up with him being there. “I still have a lot of people that come along and congrat-

One of his supporters, Kyere Loren, stopped to speak with the Weekly after interviewing Lewis and said: “He simply wants his life back. It’s his home. There are a lot of very judgemental people out there who feel threatened by those who choose to live differently.”

Nelson bride wins competition LETTERS A dozen wedding dresses received a rare encore, with twelve local brides taking the opportunity to relive the happiest day of their lives. The Bride of the Year show was held at Hope Community Church, and allowed newlywed women from the region to show off their wedding gowns, with funds raised going to the Nelson Hospice. Jessica Lyver, maiden name Donaldson, was selected by the judges for the title of Bride of the Year. She married Rob on November 11 last year. Jessica sourced her silk ivory dress, an Essence Designer gown, from Christchurch, choosing an ivory colour to suit her hair and skin tone. She had it altered to fit perfectly, and flatter her figure. She chose a simple veil so as not to detract from the gown’s beaded detail. Jessica enjoyed the chance to relive her wedding, which she says was “just a perfect day.” The judges were looking for flow on the catwalk, and a top to bottom polished look. “The suitability of the gown to the bride is a really important factor; how it fits, whether it suits her figure and personality. I think what’s interesting is the diversity of the gowns,” says judge Robyn Cliffe. This was the eighth Bride of the Year show for the region, with Heather Harley announcing her retirement on the night. “It’s been a lot of hard work but it’s been very rewarding, I know I’ve raised a lot of money for Hospice. Somebody else can pick up the reigns and carry it on,” says Heather. The fundraising total has not yet been added, but Heather predicts it will be in the thousands.

TO THE EDITOR

It is sad to read in the Nelson Weekly that Nelson Bays Community Law’s future is uncertain because of possible funding issues next year. They provide very necessary legal opinions in our community, which supports the service provided by the Citizens Advice Bureau. While we don’t offer ‘legal opinions’ our volunteers can access and read the law, and help clients understand their rights and responsibilities. For example, CAB are considered the ‘consumer experts’ and we regularly help people when products and services go wrong. We also offer information and options for employment and relationship issues, housing, finance and benefits, social and sporting activities. In fact, we help anyone with anything, and it’s all free. Community Law and Citizens Advice Bureau both provide a valuable service to the people of the Nelson Tasman region, and our community would suffer if this was lost. Heather Thomas, on behalf of CAB Nelson Tasman.

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: I am a single working parent of two teenage sons. Our grocery bill has increased to $270 per week. I can’t afford to pay this amount. What do you think I should be spending? A: Otago University Department of Human Nutrition* recommends that your teenage boys should eat at least $83 of food each per week, and you, $62 per week. That is $225 per week. I think with careful planning and cooking healthy food from scratch you may be able to get this cost down to $160-$180per week..  Decide what meals you will cook this week  Make a list and keep to a planned budget  DON’T shop when you are hungry  Get to know food prices so you recognise good value  Buy on special, or bulk buy with friends  Buy basic ingredients, local and seasonal food  Cook larger meals, use leftovers for lunches or freeze  Replace some of the meat in casseroles with beans and lentils  Stock your pantry and freezer with basics: baking goods, tinned tomatoes, dried beans and lentils, tinned fish, frozen vegetables You can eat healthily on a smaller budget. *http://nutrition.otago.ac.nz/consultancy/foodcostsurvey

New citizens welcomed to Nelson Thirty three people from Myanmar to Turkey and from Sweden to America will swear allegiance to New Zealand next week and in the process become Nelson’s new citizens. Nelson City Council has released the latest list of immigrants to get their New Zealand citizenship at the council’s chambers. They include three Filipinos, 17 Brits, seven from Myanmar and one each from Australia, Sweden, Fiji, Turkey and the United States. The candidates will swear allegiance to Queen Elizabeth in front of Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio. Aldo says he enjoys the ceremonies and meeting the people that decide to make Nelson home. “They are a special occasion for people and they are fun. People are happy and excited to complete what is a long and special process and for some its been a serious and arduous process that is the begining of a new life for them. “These people add to Nelson’s culture in so many ways through their different life experiences that such varied and diverse cultures have and to bring this to Nelson makes us incredibly fortunate to have them here.”

Having won the regional Genee Dance Challenge in Christchurch last week, two Nelson ballet dancers have qualified for the national competition. Isabel Norriss, 10, of Henley School and Hannah Galbraith, 12, of Nelson College for Girls Preparatory School will be competing at the St James Theatre in Wellington come December. Isabel is a grade four dancer while Hannah competes in the intermediate foundation section. Both girls are registered to the Rebecca Bignall Academy of Dance. Nine dancers from various schools across the region attended the first stage of competition in Christchurch. All dancers had to be selected to enter. They performed their own routine, Isabel’s had to be less than two minutes and Hannah’s had to be 2 minutes 30 seconds. They practise at least five nights a week and will work on the same dance for the national competition. Rebecca says each dancer was judged on a variety of things including correct skills, flex-

ten called in to drive the school buses. He spent six years as councillor for Richmond after that and got himself a role on the district health board, also juggling his role at Grey Power. Sitting next to his wife of 25 years, Carole, Gordon was quick to identify his marriage as his highlight over the years. Raising the local membership of Grey Power to 14,000 was his proudest moment within the organisation. There are always ongoing frustrations and battles with the government regarding superannuation and making sure senior citizens have enough money to live off during retirement. Gordon acknowledges that as the key struggle at the moment and something he will continue to push at a national level. “The government is saying we can’t afford the superannuation, yet many senior citizens only have the superannuation to live on. When you take the biggest bill or expense that senior citizens have it’s their rates bill.” Following his 80th birthday, Gordon is heading to Australia for a well deserved holiday. He will see out his presidency with Grey Power until a new president is elected.

• Four container ships, two big ones, a tanker, a log ship, and 28 fishing vessel movements kept the port and fishing companies very busy during the last week. • It was also made interesting week last week with the longest ship ever to visit Port Nelson at 225.09m. It was an interesting pilotage both in and out. • Strong winds also created an interesting time for the pilots on other vessels especially the car carrier. How did you get on with your smaller vessels? I heard a rumour there were a few more dragged anchors. • Did you know that you must report any accident, incident or serious harm injury (legally defined as a “mishap”) to Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) as soon as practicable after it occurs? Locals judge worlds best coffee Phillip Rollo Hayden Thompson travelled to Austria last month to taste 20 of the world’s best brewed coffees. Hayden made the trip to Europe to appear as a judge at the SCAE World of Coffee, the industry’s most prestigious international coffee championship. The 2012 edition was held in Vienna and following his certification, Hayden was invited to be one of the judges. He wasn’t alone either. Emma MarklandWebster, who is also based in Nelson, was judging in the competition. The World Brewers Cup is a new competition, highlighting the craft of filter coffee brewing by hand, promoting manual coffee brewing and service excellence. That was the category that Hayden was to judge and he spent the week sampling and judging what each individual had made. The World Barista Championship is the competition’s flagship event and Emma took a role in overviewing the judging panel in that event. There were 23 competitors entered in the Brewers Cup and Hayden says distinctive flavours were noticeable between countries. “You’re tasting coffee in a very different way from how you’d taste an espresso coffee. The top six were using coffees that were very rare, very very expensive but the most amazing coffees you’d ever taste in your life,” says Hayden, who is the general manager of Pomeroy’s Coffee and Tea Company. Hayden says it was a “treat” to be one of the judges of the world’s best coffees. Judges had to score each entry for catego-

The tastes from the winning Australian entry made it taste unlike coffee, says Hayden. “The flavours that you were getting were like watermelon and limes, you had to remind yourself you were drinking coffee and not fruit juice.” At that level – all of the entries had to win

their individual national championship to qualify – there are no bad coffees, but some are unusual. Because there was no conflict between events, Hayden also aided New Zealand’s representative Aymon McQuade in the buildup to the World Barista Championship. Hayden is also hoping to judge at next year’s event, which will be held in Australia.

SATURDAY 21 JULY 10AM

Like many Nelson institutions the Nelson Underwater Club Inc. can be proud of being one of the oldest (and still largest) clubs in its league within New Zealand. Formed in 1952, in response to a need to aid the police in incidents requiring diving expertise, the Nelson Underwater Club remains active and engaged in various diving activities today. The founding members built their own clubrooms, with a fair bit of the fundraising coming from crayfish raffles in the local pubs. Today much of the running of the club is selffunded, including regular subsidised dive trips. Nowadays the club has a far more conservationist outlook, with photography and educational programmess to the forefront of its activities, though the hunting and gathering aspect of seafood is still alive and thriving. Looking forward to protecting our underwater environments for the sake of future generations, along with learning from the mistakes made elsewhere, the Nelson Underwater Club prides itself on promoting education and conservation issues. However, the main aim of the club is to get people involved in underwater activities. Several members of the club are qualified dive instructors and divemasters and club trips focus on combining safe diving with interesting dive sites. These trips are a perfect venue for providing the newly qualified diver, or someone getting back into diving, with a buddy environment in safe conditions. If you don’t have all your own gear, Nelson Underwater Club has gear for hire. Our region offers a diverse range of diving opportunities, including some of the oldest and

youngest marine reserves within NZ - Tonga Island and Nelson’s own Horoirangi Reserve off the Glenduan. Not enough can be said about the success of the Horoirangi Reserve, from being pillaged to near nothing it is growing daily. Today it can yield some awesome dive experiences and is a real ambassador for the worth of marine reserves. Those who believed a marine reserve couldn’t flourish in such close proximity to Nelson sewer ponds should eat their words. Nelson diving isn’t limited to just our coastal environment, we are also blessed with experiences inland, the lakes, world-renowned resurgences and, up to a few years ago, the unrivalled Pupu Springs. Over the years various members of the Nelson Underwater Club have influenced the way we handle our marine environments, including Ross MacDonald, a founding member who has been an active diver for the past 60 years and there is little Ross hasn’t seen. Ross was one of the first divers in the Riwaka Resurgence, exploring the dark depths with a candle in a jar and a home made ‘dry’ suit). Last year Ross was deservedly awarded the esteemed Wyland Award – presented to those who have made a difference to New Zealand’s underwater world. At 82 Ross still sneaks in the occasional dive and remains the patron of the Nelson Underwater Club. Local underwater hockey and freediving groups have evolved from initial club projects. Nelson Underwater Club newest development is Reef Check, establishing an internationally recognized underwater environment monitoring system, firstly monitoring our own Ho-

roirangi Reserve, and then taking it around New Zealand via other dive clubs. Reef Check is an educational initiative that can be incorporated with other educational programs with immense potential for schools and getting our kids into the water while learning about the value and fragility of our marine world. Nelson Underwater Club plan regular dives both locally and further afield - hunting or scenic diving, ice dives, cave dives, photography, dive trips around NZ, or to the Pacific.

Make sure you don’t miss the Nelson Underwater Club’s Open Day and Monster Dive Gear Garage Sale being held on Saturday at the clubrooms next to Pioneer Park in Hastings Street, Nelson. It starts at 10am and there are some awesome deals to be had with over $70,000 of dive gear up for sale. For more details about the club visit www.nelsonunderwater.co.nz or drop in to their monthly meetings on the third Tuesday from 7.30pm at their clubrooms.

It’s been 15 years since Mark Chapman founded Nelson Bays Suzuki in 1997, and to celebrate there are discounts across their extensive range of Suzukis and Subarus throughout July. Originally, the dealership was a satellite business for Suzuki, with just a two-man sales division. In 2005 the whole store received a facelift. They have since grown and in 2007 they adopted Subaru off the Motor Group, expanding their already leading range. They now have a staff base of five, with Mark and Norm leading the sales team.

Small cars’ popularity is ever growing, and so is the range available. With so many makes, models and additional features available, it can be a challenge to decide which to get. Which safety features do you need? Auto or manual? Should you get metallic paint? A proximity key? Thankfully, the team at Nelson Bays Suzuki and Subaru have an in-depth, specialised knowledge, giving them the ability to talk you through the options and help you choose a vehicle that will suit your needs perfectly.

Nelson Freemasons have joined their fellow lodge-men around the country in hosting a morning tea. The Longest Morning Tea was held at the Masonic Centre in Nile St on Saturday morning with more than 100 people coming along to take part. The Nelson City Brass Band was on hand to provide entertainment with proceeds raised from the function heading towards the band. A little more than $700 was raised with a book fair held after the morning tea raising a further $250 for the Kirkpatrick Trust, a long time Mason charity which provides scholarships for girls attending Nelson College for Girls. Taking the cat for a walk As Barb and Merv Johnson go for their regular walk around the streets of Stoke they pass plenty of neighbours walking their dogs. But they are the only ones walking their cat. Barb and Merv have had their cat Kol for more than a decade and for the past eight years have taken him with them on their walks. Their neighbours think it's a heck of a joke and the Johnsons say they get plenty of comments and jokes directed their way. When they first got Kol from the Nelson SPCA they say his personality was pretty strong. “After he hadn’t been here that long I saw a pile of toys in the middle of our lounge and I thought ‘what’s that?’ Well he had been jumping over the fence and stealing all the neighbours’ toys so I was forever throwing these toys back,” says Barb. “He graduated from that and he would then bring in other cats for morning tea. I was sitting

here one day and there were two other cats sitting there eating his food and I shooed them out. The next day I came home and three cats walked out. So we then got a magnetic cat door so other cats couldn’t get in.” Once the tea parties stopped Merv and Barb say he started going with them on walks. “One night he was meowing and we thought ‘what does he want?’ So we gave him some water, some food and no that wasn’t it so we said ‘do you want to come for a walk?’ He was at the front door ready to go,” says Merv. Kol is known around the Aldinga St area for his walking ways, most of that time walking either ahead of or beside his owners but as he gets older Merv says he’s started to lag behind. “I think his days are nearly done coming on walks but he’s great company and he’s a bit of a celebrity around here.”

Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia te Matangi opened this week, hoping to ensure the longevity of the Maori language within the Top of the South. Fifty-four students will start at the region’s first Maori immersion school next Monday following its official opening ceremony held early Saturday morning. It is the only Maori immersion school in the South Island north of Christchurch and was fully funded by the Ministry of Education at a cost of $4 million. There are currently 76 Maori immersion schools throughout the country, five of which are in the South Island. Four teachers will be employed by the school, or kura, which is situated next to the Richmond Church of Christ and Salisbury School. The journey to open the school has taken more than 25 years, when a group of parents first spoke about the need for a fully immersed Te Reo Maori school in the Nelson region. Head of the school’s board of trustees Davyeen Stephens says the kura’s overall goal is to see Te Reo spoken within the wider community in every day situations whether it is at a store, in the street or on the rugby field. Te reo is the only language that will be spoken inside the school grounds, except when English is taught as a subject. Davyeen

not attend or there might be some things that need to be put in place.” Arrow International first began construction in mid January and the Davyeen says everyone is happy with the end result. “Oh definitely. The parents are rapt with the design and how it all turned out in the end.” The school buildings are environmentally friendly and energy-efficient, with the

site likely to become green-star certified. Following Saturday’s ceremony, teachers arrived at the school for work on Monday. “It was a special moment, very emotional but very exciting. Now it’s all about getting on with all of the hard work that will now begin. The opening was a little hill now we have the big hill to try and conquer.”

explains that the restriction in the language rule was to ensure te reo stayed as the number one language within the kura. The restriction was driven by the parents and whanau. “They wanted a total immersion Maori speaking facility that they could send their kids to learn everything in te reo Maori,” she says. The majority of the students can speak “50 per cent” te reo Maori already and each was individually assed during interviews before being accepted into the school. “The main focus next year is to build their te reo. We have a Maori language strategy in place to make that happen. Ideally we wanted the children to come in with a background of having learnt some te reo Maori.” The school will feature “open space learning” with all students learning within different sections of the same classroom. It is a co-educational school catering for new entrance level students through to Year 13. Most of the students have come from schools within central Nelson. Principal Merita Waitoa-Paki said earlier this year that research shows te reo will be lost within 20 years without Maori immersion schools. The first steps to that will be building the word bank of all of the students. Merita has previous experience of working within Maori immersion schools in Christchurch where she was a deputy principal for six years. She highlighted in the Nelson-Marlborough area as one of the weakest in terms of te reo in the whole country. The school roll dictates the number of teachers and it was initially hoped the kura would have more than 100 students by 2017.

Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia te Matangi students would participate in inter-school events where language would not be a barrier. “For example if there was a Maori sports tournament and the school thought they should be involved in it then they would. If there was an environment where the language wouldn’t be spoken much then they would

Semi finalist found after torrid round In the mud of Jubilee Park, Marist did enough to secure its place in the final four of the Car Company division one championship and in the process, set up an exciting clash with Stoke this Saturday. Meanwhile Galbraith Nelson gave further proof of why it will head into the finals as firm favourites, beating Riwaka 49-9. Huia was the last team to qualify after it squeaked through with a 10 all draw with Wanderers, knocking the table toppers from earlier in the season out. Wakatu Hotel Marist has home field advantage this weekend but at the time of print the location and time was not confirmed. It will face a Accessman Stoke team coming off the bye and buoyed by recent success and momentum. Nelson will host Huia, again with the location and time to be confirmed later in the week. Operations manager of the Tasman Rugby Union, Mike Kerrisk, says the semi-finals will be exciting. "It will be great footy, anyone keen to watch some great local rugby should definitely get down to either game." Times and locations of the semi-finals will be posted on the Nelson Weekly website when they come available later this week. To view visit www.nelsonweekly.co.nz.

Locals compete well at Night of Wrecking New Zealand’s hopes of getting another one over the Aussies ended with a punch to the head on Saturday. WMC South Island Welter Weight champion Leon Tangaroa of Fight Club Nelson was beating Australian opponent Adam King on points when he was struck in the head towards the end of the third round, splitting his scalp open. Medics and the referee called the fight off as blood poured down his face and was unable to be stopped – an unlucky result for the Nelson fighter currently ranked number two in New Zealand. The main event was witnessed by around 800 spectators at the Trafalgar Centre – a record crowd for the Night of Wrecking

series. This was the ninth instalment of Night of Wrecking and the first to draw an international fighter. In other matchups; current F1 champion Rua Druce of MTI Wellington defeated world junior taekwondo gold medallist Hamish Duncan of Blenheim Kickboxing while Luke Graham of Proactive Gym in Christchurch took the WMC New Zealand Title off Fight Club Nelson’s Jahda Wharepapa. Fight eight was the only main event to feature two local fighters, Ritchie Harris of Fight Club and Ginge Moore of Whakatu Boxing Club. Ritchie took the fight by TKO in the second round. In the earlier fights; Sam Talbot beat

Phillip Warmouth by TKO after two eight counts by the referee, John McInnes of MTI Wellington beat Kahu Tumai in an unanimous points decision, Crystal Fuller of the Combat Room, Wellington beat Fight Club’s Lou Fuller on points, Jericho Forrest of Christchurch beat Fight Club’s Bronson Murphy on points, Matt Proctor of Proactive Gym, Christchurch, beat Tom Llwellyn of Nelson Fight Club on points, Jessica Fothergill of Mejiro Gym, Dunedin, beat Sarah Allan of Fight Club by the way of a third round TKO when Sarah dislocated her shoulder, Bob Llwellyn of Nelson Fight Club defeated Kramer Broughton on points.

Cobras grab spot in final

The Stoke Cobras were just one minute away from missing out on its third TRL finals appearance in as many years. Super Cheap Auto Stoke Cobras were down 11-10 with the clock counting down at a rain-soaked Lower Ngawhatu on Saturday when the side was awarded a penalty. The kick was successful and the 12-11 victory was enough to send the Sims Pacific Metals Tahuna Tigers out and the Stoke Cobras through to the biggest stage. Usually the benchmark of the competition, Stoke will head into Saturday's Smokefree Bin Inn Cup final as underdogs. Minor premiers Stables Richmond Rabbits booked its place into the final courtesy of a 20-12 win over Malbas Bar Wanderers Wolves. Stoke player/ coach Troy Wilson says the side is confident but also praised the professionalism of its opponents ahead of Saturday’s clash. "There isn't any reason we can't beat them as long as we play without any errors and with heaps of discipline," says Troy. "It was no surprise to me that the Rabbits are where they are. They're so professional and it's something we can aspire to." Troy has identified some targets in the Rabbits side but admits they are a team without any weaknesses. "Against the Tigers we targeted a couple of players, tried to put a lot of pressure on them and it came off. Hopefully we can do that again this Saturday." He predicts the game will be won by the most clinical side and the Cobras were prepared to play to the basics if it meant winning its third championship in a row. The Smokefree Bin Inn Cup Grand Final is being held at Trafalgar Park this Saturday. Entry is by gold coin donation. Kick off is at 2:30pm, following the Simon Mannering Cup curtain raiser which begins at 1pm. The event is alcohol and smoke free.

Sports fund dries up This looks set to be the final year for Nelson City Council’s physical activity fund. After 10 years of funding projects aimed at getting young people more active, the fund is being wound up. The fund was originally the money left unspent from the Hillary Commission Community Sport Fund when it was wound up back in 2002. Since then, the renamed physical activity fund has contributed up to $40,000 annually to community projects led by sport and recreation groups with a focus on getting more people to be physically active. Nelson City Council and the community based Physical Activity Fund distribution committee have agreed to make all the remaining money available to the community in this year’s funding round. This means that there is approximately $100,000 available for allocation. This comes with a change in focus for this final funding round. The committee will be looking at making a grant/s for one or more larger projects which will provide ongoing physical activity opportunities, especially for young people. The committee is keen to hear about larger projects that are easy for everyone to access and will have an ongoing benefit. The physical activity fund opens for applications on Wednesday 1 August and closes on Friday 21 September 2012.

Stats stack up for netball fan Vicki Carol Cook Local stalwart Vicki Reid has many strings to her netball bow – she plays for Jacks Silver, she has held her New Zealand Umpire Badge for more than 10 years and more recently became involved in a bench official role which has led to being one of two statisticians who review all ANZ Championship games every week. As a statistician you are one of three who sit courtside – there is a caller, an in – putter (inputting the information into a laptop) and a back-up who is another pair of eyes, and will print out reports in the breaks for the media. It can be pretty intense as virtually each and every pass gets recorded, therefore the faster the games goes the more quickly the caller talks, the more inputting and so on. All three wear headsets and are miked up to the umpires so they can hear the umpire’s ruling as their view could be obstructed by an umpire or players or they may not be able to hear on account of the noise from the crowd. Vicki said she has been in “the right place, at the right time” when netball looked at expanding the analysis of the game. When SkyTV won the hosting rights for the World Championships in Auckland in 2007 they needed a match package to collate graphics for the viewers at home. It is not just about how many shots were attempted and how many went through the hoop – it’s far more analytical, as there are centre pass received, circle feeds, goal assists, deflections, rebounds and so on. Vicki has been fortunate in officiating at the

Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2007, and the World Championships in Auckland and Singapore last year. There have been three different systems used, however Vicki takes it all in her stride. Each week all matches in the ANZ Championship are reviewed and Vicki is one of two in New Zealand who complete the post match editing. Every game is recorded and reviewed (that’s definitely a bonus for husband Cameron and their three daughters as they now have MySky). Vicki reviews three games per week and receives an official score sheet and game file from the statistician and all the plays are checked and amended if necessary. There may have been a judgement call that may not have been the correct one, a technical hitch etc. This season Vicki has been statistician at games in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin and has been given opportunities to officiate in Wellington as Nelson is part of the Pulse franchise. Local bench officials Sally Paki Paki and Marilyn Milne have also officiated at Pulse games. Earlier this year, Vicki was invited to attend a trial for the new Fast5 competition which will be played under new rules in November. The Reid household is a very busy netball one with eldest daughter, 12 year old Caitlin playing for Broadgreen and in her first year as a named umpire. While twins, Elise and Evie are key players in their Stoke School Future Ferns team. And what lies ahead for Vicki? There is always the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the next World Champs in Sydney to aspire to.

Stoke ready for semi, says coach Six weeks ago Stoke coach Gary Alsop did not think he would be preparing his team for finals footy. This week he will do just that and says there is a air of confidence flowing through the players. "A month ago they knew what they needed to do, win three games and get a bonus point. They put their heads down and their minds to it and here we are so full credit to them," he says.

Accessman Stoke will play Wakatu Hotel Marist in this Saturday's semi-final. The location and time isn't yet known but it will not be a home game for Stoke. Gary says that won't bother his boys. "Well we won't have to walk past New World this week so it might work in our favour," he joked. Stoke struggled through the early stages of the competition and went on a five

game losing streak with management screaming out for front rowers. But the return of several key players, including halfback Shawn Begg and fullback Leon Guerin have helped balance out the side and give them the winning edge. Stoke could also have former All Black prop Campbell Johnstone in the mix with the new Tasman Makos signing now a Stoke man. Gary says he trusts his play-

ers and is expecting a very tough game on Saturday. "They gave us a hiding in our first game and then we beat them so it will be interesting to see how this weekend goes. I trust the boys though, they've worked hard and we've had a change in fortunes so hopefully we can keep improving and come away with the win." For kick off details, see www.nelsonweekly.co.nz later this week.

Crushing blow for Stoke women Wet and slippery conditions made it tough but losing another grand final was the toughest thing the players of the Stoke womens' side had to deal with on Saturday. An even contest was a certainty, as the teams had been hard to separate all season but Waimea used its home field advantage to retain their championship from 2011, 20-15. The conditions turned any preconceived game plans upside down, with percentage rugby becoming the order of the day. Stoke battled hard into a brisk headwind for the first half, controlling the ball well before Jenna Eathorne burst through to score under the posts after a set move from a scrum. She easily converted and Stoke had gained the early upper hand. Waimea struck back soon after with a try and a penalty before Stoke earned a penalty of its own, taking a 10-8 lead into the break. With the wind at their backs, playing a territory and possession game should have paid dividends for Stoke. But to its credit, Waimea didn’t allow this and clearly had other ideas, twice crossing the Stoke line after going multiple phases from inside their own half.

Stoke player Helen Carew scores a try for her side in Saturday's final at Jubilee Park. Stoke lost the game to Waimea, 20-15. Photo: Blair Hall/Photoaction. Helen Carew crossed for Stoke shortly after, and we had a five-point game on our hands with the clock winding down. That’s how it stayed until the final whistle, although Stoke

were camped on the Waimea line for the last five minutes in a truly nail-biting finale to the season. It is another tough finals loss for Stoke which lost last years final to the same team in the dying minutes of the match.

Stoke's first senior rugby team took the field in 1962. The team was back row from left; Ian Forbes (secretary), Bob Clout (president), Ted Clarke, Snow Edgar, Robin Thorp, Bruce Moore, Deida Monarc, Joe Hippolite, unknown, John Wylie, Trevor Smith, Max Warren (manager), Jack Ashley (coach) and Joe Fitzgerald (club captain). Front row from left; Ernie Deniston (touch judge), George Rangi, Peter Jenson, Frank Crimp, Piri Kotua, Bert Smith (captain) and Trevor Atkinson.

Fifty years of senior rugby for Stoke The Stoke Rugby Club is today one of the region’s most successful and proud rugby clubs, winning two division one championships over the past three years, producing dozens of representative players and is now a cornerstone of the Stoke community. And this year the club celebrates 50 years since it first started playing top flight rugby. To celebrate, the club is hosting an Old Timers Day on July 28 to recognise the people who helped found the club and made it what it is today. The celebration is being held at the Stoke Rugby Clubrooms from 12 noon with all former players, coaches and administrators welcome to attend. Organiser Errol Beatie says along with dozens of people who have pulled on the scarlet of Stoke from the 60s to today, the captain of the very first team to play senior division one rugby, Bert Smith, will be in attendance, along with the only three surviving members of the very first rugby side that the club fielded, a third grade side, in

1947. If all goes according to plan the old timers will make their way from the clubrooms to watch the current Stoke senior side play in the division one final at Trafalgar Park from 3pm. First the current team must win its semi-final this weekend. Errol says the day will be a great celebration for the club. “We’ve been a very proud club over the past fifty years and have grown a successful club with a great spirit.” The Stoke club started in 1946 when it was known as the STAR club – Stoke, Tahunanui, Annesbrook Rugby. It played its first game of rugby in the Nelson third grade in 1947 and in the following years entered teams in the junior, third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades. The 1950s were a time of exciting growth for the club. In 1953 the club won its first championship in the eighth grade and the following year the clubs first shed and goal posts were provided at Greenmeadows. Throughout the 70s the club started to plan some clubrooms, adopted scarlet shorts to match the jersey, adopted the Eagle Arises A as its emblem after the City Corporation of Stokeon-Trent in England approved its use from that city’s coat of arms. By 1980 fundraising had begun for the Stoke Sports and Recreation Centre, which opened in 1984. By this time Stoke had eight JAB teams, two netball teams, four senior teams and a softball team. club rugby championship, beating Riwaka 17-0 in the final. The following year it drew the final 13 all with Huia but did not take the field for the play-on, handing Huia the title. Stoke bounced back the following year though to once again win the senior championship, beating Waimea Old Boys 12-9 in the final. That same year the clubrooms were opened after 6000 voluntary hours of work. The 1980s and early 90s were a great time for the club, winning senior championships in 1986, 87, 91, 92, 96. It has since gone on to win the title again in 2009 and 2010. The proud club is now one of the biggest in the region and boasts hundreds of JAB players and four senior rugby teams, including a women’s side. Anyone wanting to come along and join in the festivities of the Old Timers Day at the Stoke clubrooms on July 28 is more than welcome. For more information give Errol a call on 546 4648.
