NBS Donates over $90,000 to Local Hospices

NBS, a financial institution providing personal and business banking services to local people for over 160 years, announced on May 1 that it is donating $90,600 to three regional hospices due to the success of a recent campaign to attract new deposit funds.

During the month of March, NBS launched a market-leading 8-month term investment special under the banner of “an investment that gives back”. For every new account opened, NBS offered $200 to go to the hospice closest to where the account was opened. Across all eight of the organisation’s branches, the NBS team opened an amazing 453 new term investment accounts, meaning a total of $90,600 will be distributed to Nelson Tasman, Mid Canterbury and Buller West Coast Hospices.

The majority of accounts were opened in the Nelson Tasman region, resulting in a total of $73,400 being raised for the Nelson Tasman Hospice.

Chief Executive of NBS, Tony Cadigan, expressed his delight at the result, stating that “offering our clients competitive term investment rates, matched with a donation to a crucial local charity, has been hugely successful. We would like to thank all our clients for their support and for making these donations possible.”

Donna ChingTregidga, Head

of Supporter Engagement & Income Development at Nelson Tasman Hospice was blown away by the donation and says it is an unexpected, but very welcome addition to the hospice’s fundraising efforts.

“Every year we must raise a shortfall of $3.5 million so we can continue to offer all our services for free, so every dollar counts. We are extremely

grateful to NBS and value the special relationship that we have with them. Not only are they our banking provider, but they really understand the importance of the work we do in the community and the difference we can make to the lives of patients and their families.

NBS is owned by its clients and committed to serving the communities in which they operate. This model

allows them to provide meaningful financial support to the community through sponsorships and grants to hundreds of sporting, arts, health, educational, and environmental organisations. Over the last 2 years, NBS has invested $2.2 million back into the community. To learn more about banking for life with NBS, visit their website at nbs.co.nz, call 0800 101 700.

Grandma with Spirit Sails for the Kids

For 26 years Sheila Budgen has been a volunteer crew member on the Spirit of New Zealand. Her family were so impressed by the positive transformations experienced by the teenagers who undertake the 10-day sailing trips, they established the Spirit of Tasman Bay Trust to raise funds for as many local teenagers to experience it as possible.

It was a sailing trip by their eldest daughter on the Spirit of Adventure years ago that inspired the family to get involved. When the tall ship subsequently came to Nelson, Sheila and her husband went to have a look and in the process, discovered the ship was needing more volunteer crew. Her husband was keen.

“I said, well you’re welcome to do it but I’m not doing it. But he signed me up to do a weekend trip and 26 years later I’m still sailing.”

Sheila says anyone can be a volunteer

crew member, you just have to enjoy working with teenagers from all kinds of backgrounds.

“I usually say to them, you’ve got 50 odd names to learn, we’ll make one easy, you can call me grandma. And they come and talk to me and tell me all sorts of things. One of them said he’d never been with good people before. I said to him, we’re nothing special, we’re just ordinary people. You just give them a little look into how life could be.”

“We take all their phones and ipods off them so they’ve got no technology for 10 days, and each day one of them takes on being a leader for the day. For some of them that’s no problem, but for others it’s a real challenge. So they develop their leadership skills, their social skills, all sorts of things. I just see how much they get out of it. “

The Spirit of Tasman Bay Trust received a grant of $2100 from the Network Tasman Trust contributing towards

four young teenagers to go on the Spirit of New Zealand. They were one of 84 notfor-profit organisations to receive a grant from Network Tasman Trust. A total of $160,820 was allocated the Nelson Tasman area including wildlife groups, schools, sports teams and counselling and support services.

Network Tasman Trust Chairwoman,

Gwenny Davis says allocating grants to local organisations is a privilege.

“I think it’s wonderful that the Trust is able to help people out who are doing such great things for our community. The six trustees of Network Tasman Trust find it very gratifying to be involved in the decision-making process and to observe the commitment and

dedication so many people have to their communities.” NTT grant funding generally falls into five main categories: Social Support Services, Sport & Recreation, Education, Art & Culture and Environmental & Energy Saving. Grant allocations are capped at $3,000 per organisation. Applications will open again in July 2023.

Motueka Quilt Show this week!

The show, starting in 2003, highlights the work of its 28 members. Visitors to the show are assured of seeing new and original works as none of these quilts have previously been shown in the area. Adding to the flavour is an optional Challenge for members. This year the inspiration was “Seasons”. There should be some interesting creations as we were sure there was something for everyone within this field. There will be two guest exhibitions. We have the travelling Hoffman Exhibition where quilters, who participate, purchase a metre of a Hoffman designed fabric and can choose any original design of their own but it must contain some of that particular fabric. To add a twist the quilt needs to fit into a metre squared but also not be a regular shape. It is a nationwide challenge and the exhibition, once judged, travels to different shows through the country. It is always fascinating seeing what has been

created. The second exhibition is a travelling exhibition of quilts from Aotearoa Quilters titled “Lines”. This was a challenge for members of Aotearoa Quilts and again can come from one end of the country to the other as it is a nationwide organisation. Entry to the Show is $5. There is a raffle with prizes of a sewing machine, quilt and basket of goodies associated with our

show where part of the proceeds are donated to charity. This year we are supporting Search and Rescue Motueka. Since 2008, $18,500 has been donated to local community groups and projects. This does not include the many quilts also donated to charities, groups and individuals. There will also be merchants selling quilting and craft supplies. They always love to

welcome new members into their group. Meetings are held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month in the Motueka Band rooms in Old Wharf Rd from 9-3. A wide range of quilting takes place and often there are visiting tutors to teach a particular class or skill as well as mini classes and demonstrations by club members. As well as hands on quilting, club members are involved

in a number of charity initiatives. Quilts are made for the NICU at Nelson Hospital where parents can choose a quilt for their baby. If you would like to join them come and have a chat at the show!

Motueka Quilting Connection Annual Quilt show will be held 19, 20, 21 May at the Motueka Recreation Centre, Old Wharf Rd, Motueka. 10am-4pm each day.

New Zealand String Quartet coming to Motueka this week

The Motueka Music Group is pleased to announce that the New Zealand String Quartet will be giving an afternoon concert at the Chanel Arts Centre this Saturday, 20 May. The concert is part of the Quartet’s tour of New Zealand during which it will be playing in 17 centres up and down the country.

As always, the Quartet will bring an eclectic and vibrant mix of music that promises to excite and entertain, from familiar classical favourites, to spicy contemporary works and a few hidden gems. The tour programme has been designed using the NZSQ’s signature style of lively and engaging introductions to each piece of music spoken by the Quartet members themselves. These introductions aim to illuminate the stories behind the music and make this a special and engaging event for all audiences. From newcomers to the artform to the most seasoned chamber music fan,

there is something to excite everyone. The programme includes works by Haydn, Schubert and Shostakovitch.

The members of the Quartet are Helene Pohl (1st violin), Monique Lapins (2nd violin), Gillian Ansell (viola) and Rolf Gjelsten (cello).

Helene was born in New York to German parents and spent her childhood on both sides of the Atlantic. At 17 she began tertiary study in Cologne and continued her studies at the Eastman School of Music and at Indiana University. She has performed extensively in the USA, Germany, England, Italy, and South America. She joined the New Zealand String Quartet in February 1994. In 2014 she was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for her outstanding services to music in New Zealand.

Monique Lapins began her violin studies at the age of six with the Suzuki method and continued her studies at the

Australian National Academy of Music and at Singapore’s Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. She has performed in festivals throughout France, the Czech Republic, Holland, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and at the Open Chamber Music Seminars in Prussia Cove. She has toured extensively in collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra Collective, the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

Gillian Ansell made her concerto debut as a violinist with the Auckland Philharmonia at the age of 16. She studied violin, viola and piano at the Royal College of Music in London and then won a scholarship for further study in Germany at the Musikhochschule Cologne. She became a founding member of the New Zealand String Quartet in 1987. In 2008 she was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for her out-

standing services to music in New Zealand.

Rolf Gjelsten began cello studies in his native city Victoria, Canada at the age of 15. At 22 he became the youngest member of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. Rolf returned to North America to study with members of the La Salle, Hungarian, Vermeer, Cleveland, and Emerson string quartets.

He toured internationally with the Laurentian Quartet for almost a decade, made five CDs and taught cello at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. He has a doctoral degree in cello from Rutgers University. Rolf joined the New Zealand String Quartet in May 1994 and in 2014 he was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for his outstanding services to music in New Zealand. The concert starts at 2.30pm. Tickets can be purchased at Floral Affaire (cash only) or at the door on the afternoon of the concert (EFTPOS available.)

CROSSWORD

Dear Editor,

I was amazed at the wonderful response to the Pink Ribbon Morning Tea at the Motueka RSA. The organisation was faultless and the food absolutely delicious! The Raffles and Spot Prizes made the morning very entertaining, and the MC also. This was an excellent way to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research, and may we see it again next year. Congratulations to all those involved well done.

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your

article on the proposed removal of parking in High Street.

Whilst the Council has notified the affected householders and businesses, I am not aware that the feeder population between Mapua and Split Apple understand the changes.

My question is, has the concept artist actually ever been to High Street Motueka? Just 2 cars, 4 cyclists and 7 pedestrians! Where are the camper vans, the SUVs towing boats and caravans, delivery vans, double trailer logging trucks, rubbish trucks and all the other massive trucks and trailers that travel through High Street, Motueka daily?

My answer to the problem, is to reroute the heavy through

traffic north and south from the High Street, Wharf Road roundabout through to Queen Victoria Street to eventually link up with River Road, Riwaka. By rerouting heavy traffic round, rather than through the town the problem goes away (except for the 4 cyclists) and the already struggling businesses can continue to service their regular customer base which we and they rely on.

Who knows, if this should occur, as a bonus, central government might well stump up funds for a 21st century bridge across the Motueka River.

Regards, Tim Rich Riwaka

National commits to game changers in farming regulations

Farming is the backbone of New Zealand’s economy with agricultural exports making up 63 per cent of our goods exports to the tune of $41billion.

When farmers succeed, New Zealand succeeds.

However, since coming to power in 2017, Labour has waged war on farmers by burying them under a mountain of red tape: more than 20 amended regulations that directly affect the ability of businesses in the agricultural sector to operate successfully. For example, wetlands are so poorly defined that farmers are having to go through a court process to determine whether land is a ‘paddock’ that can be farmed, or a protected wetland that can’t.

Because farmers end up spending more of their time and money grappling with Labour’s new rules, they have less to invest in their farms, risking lower productivity. Costs get passed on to consumers so, actually, we all end up paying for Labour’s over-regulation.

Let’s be honest: Labour does not understand the rural sector. It has run rough-shod over local communities and imposed ‘one-sizefits-all’ rules with massive compliance costs for farmers, often for limited or no environmental gain, and using rules and regulations to try to run farms from Wellington.

That ends under National.

National’s Getting back to Farming package will cut the mountain of red tape and help farmers get on with earning the income on which their livelihoods, New Zealand’s economy, and New Zealanders’ standard of living,

depend. National will get Wellington out of farming. We’ll ensure farming regulations are fit for purpose, for example, that they actually protect our environment, as domestic and overseas consumers expect. National will return the management of local issues to local councils. And we’ll ensure rural communities have the tools they need to continue to provide New Zealand, and the world, with high-quality, low-carbon food and fibre.

In contrast to Labour’s heavyhanded centralisation, National supports practical environmentalism. We are committed to a carefully balanced approach, integrating both environmental and economic goals. National will deliver a professional, competent regulatory system that targets environmental outcomes without telling farmers how to run their businesses, and while imposing the minimum compliance costs on them.

National is committed to New Zealand meeting its climate change goals, but we understand that shutting down some of the world’s most carbonefficient farmers only sends production to less efficient farms overseas and could raise global emissions.

We can protect the environment and allow farmers to get on with business by reining in the bureaucracy and using clear, well-targeted rules instead.

This is only the start. This country does not need more rules. It needs better regulation. National will be announcing more policy on agriculture – and many other things – in the coming weeks and months.

And in government, National will deliver results so that all New Zealanders get ahead.

Ganesh Raj invites Tasman region to get behind Pink Ribbon Breakfast month

PLANNED POWER OUTAGES

Every week, Network Tasman is carrying out planned maintenance somewhere on the power line network. This requires us temporarily turning the power o to some houses or businesses.

We let your electricity retailer know well in advance when a power outage caused by planned maintenance is due to happen. They will let you know, usually via email, that your power is going to be turned o while we carry out the work.

Sometimes customers phone us after the power has gone o to say they were not noti ed of a planned power outage. Not knowing about an outage can be hugely disruptive for customers, which is not what we want. We want you to know in advance so that you can make plans for the outage.

There can be a number of reasons why you might be unaware that the power will be temporarily turned o for maintenance work, but there are some things you can do to make sure you get planned outage noti cations:

Î Check the contact details that your electricity retailer has for you, and make sure they are correct.

Î Check your email settings to make sure emails from your electricity retailer don’t accidentally end up in your ‘junk’ folder or somewhere else that you don’t usually look.

Î If you are not the electricity account holder, make sure the person or company who is, knows to pass outage noti cations on to you. For example, if you are a tenant and the landlord gets the power bill, the landlord will get the outage noti cation, not you.

Î Ask your electricity retailer how they let you know about planned power outages, and think about whether this will be okay for you.

Î Some electricity retailers can provide outage noti cation by text message. If you want this, ask your retailer if they can do it for you.

Î Keep an eye out for more than one outage noti cation from your electricity retailer. Sometimes we need to have two or more outages in the same area to get the work done. Each outage is noti ed separately by your electricity retailer.

Celebrity foodie Ganesh Raj is asking Tasman locals to show their support for Kiwis affected by breast cancer this May by hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast, Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s largest annual fundraiser.

The co-host of TVNZ’s Eat Well for Less and selfproclaimed “Flavour Ninja” has created a mouth-watering new recipe for Pink Ribbon Breakfast - Raspberry Ricotta Pancakes with Raspberry Compote –to show his support for the cause and entice more hosts to sign up.

Ganesh says he is inspired by the improving survival rates of breast cancer in New Zealand thanks to early detection and access to effective treatment, but more still needs to be done: “Hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast is a fantastic way to raise awareness and help fund research into this devastating disease.

“Let us come togeth-

er to support the fighters, admire the survivors, and honour those we have tragically lost to breast cancer.”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer for Kiwi women, with around 120 diagnoses in the Nelson Marlborough area every year. The proceeds raised from every Pink Ribbon Breakfast goes towards supporting patients, groundbreaking research, and education campaigns to promote the importance of early detection. People can register at pinkribbonbreakfast.co.nz

Ganesh Raj’s Raspberry Ricotta Pancakes with Raspberry

Compote

SERVES 4

Ingredients for pancakes:

2 cups flour

4 tsp baking powder

½ tsp salt

2 cups ricotta

cheese

¼ cup granulated sugar

1½ cups milk

2 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup fresh raspberries (rough chop)

4 eggs

Ingredients for raspberry compote:

2 cups frozen raspberries

½ cup granulated sugar

2 tsp lemon juice

½ cup water

Toppings:

2 cups fresh strawberries (sliced)

Maple syrup

Mascarpone (just a dollop if you want)

Instructions:

Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a big bowl. The ricotta cheese, milk, eggs, and vanilla essence should all be thoroughly blended in a separate basin.

Just combine the dry components with the addition of the wet ingredients. Avoid

overmixing. Add the raspberries, chopped, in a gentle fold.

A non-stick pan should be heated over a medium heat.

Use cooking spray or a little butter on the pan. For each pancake, pour roughly 1/4 cup of batter into the griddle.

Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until surface bubbles develop. When golden brown, flip the food over and cook for an additional 1–2 minutes. Continue until all the batter is done.

In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the raspberries, sugar, lemon juice, and water to make the raspberry compote. Cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the mixture has thickened, after bringing to a simmer.

Along with the compote of raspberries, serve with some thinly sliced strawberries, and maple syrup. Mascarpone it for next level good times!

Alt-folk musician at Ruby Bay Store on Saturday

Christchurch based alt-folk musician Bryony Matthews, is touring her new album ‘We’re All the Same’ throughout New Zealand. Head along and watch her play at the Ruby Bay Store this Saturday, 20 May 7.30pm.

Bryony is a singer and a songwriter who writes unique, considered, lyrics- focused music that sits in the genre of alternative folk/pop. ‘We’re All The Same’ the new album by Bryony is at long last ready to share. Her first album ‘Little Queen’ was released in 2017 which gained high praise. “The crafted song-writing and purity of vision of Little Queen places her firmly in the upper stratum of NZ’s alt folk music scene,” said music. net.nz.

Bryony has been very busy writing, evolving her sound and most importantly, mothering her young daughter. This new album, which was recorded and mixed with Ryan

Fisherman in The Hut in Christchurch, sees a range of old and new songs, some touching on life as a new mother- the beauty and everything in between. The album name comes from one of the songs on the album, a poignant tune written about our dying world and the importance of focus-

ing on our similarities rather than our differences. ‘We’re All The Same’ was released in April followed by a nationwide NZ tour.

“The vocals are ethereal, light and soothing while the minimalist electronic soothing production creates an airy, dreamy feel,” said Fame Magazine.

“’Thinking Of You’

makes for a wonderfully rich and captivating listen. With her sweet and lofty voice layered amongst a sweeping electronic production, she has looked to broaden her sound and aesthetic with this kaleidoscopic new gem.”

NZ Music Month @ MHS

May is always a busy month for the Music Department with events for NZ Music Month and national competitions to prepare for.

Last week the school had the NZ Music Commission’s Music Mentor, Kim Halliday, working with students for two days. The focus was on composition with bands, singer/songwriters and duos learning from Kim’s wisdom and years of experience in the music industry. Several bands and soloists were preparing for the Rockquest heats which were held in the weekend.

Others were entering a composition competition, Youthtown for Play It Strange. Any acts that get through to the Rockquest Regional Final on May, 26 will be spending the next couple of weeks polishing their performances and for some, writing a second song.

The performers were able to practice in front of a public audience on Thursday at the

NZMM Lunchtime concerts held in the Motueka Library during May. The concerts begin at 1.30pm and are 30mins in length.

On May, 18 it will be the turn of string players some of whom are currently practicing for the Chamber Music competition in early June. They will be joined by the school choir, Suono Bellissimo, who are currently rehearsing for The Big Sing, a

national choral competition run by the NZ Choral Federation.

This year the Top of the South regional final will be held in Blenheim on June, 6.

Also part of NZ Music Month is lunchtime Karaoke sessions.

The first Wednesday lunchtime session was held last week with students and one brave staff member, taking to the stage to have a bit of fun and entertain the

audience. Students will have another two opportunities through May to stretch their vocal cords. Hopefully some of the performers will be encouraged to also enter the annual MHS Talent Quest. The Final is always a popular community event and will be held on June, 23 in the School Hall.

As well as performers there will also be an Art exhibition with works for sale.

Tãkaka Library, from humble beginnings to a treasure trove of information

fantastic event full of memories and friendship. Do stop in to the Tãkaka Library and write a note of appreciation to place on their pinboard. While you are there take the time to explore their history and browse their display of old photo albums.

It’s been quite a journey which started over 150 years ago, let’s find out more.

On 7th June 1869 the Nelson Evening Mail carried a notice that the ship Icon from London was carrying one case bound for the Tãkaka Public Library. Where this library was located is not known but it is thought to have been at the Lower Tãkaka School.

In 1869 the school committee of the one-roomed schoolhouse was granted permission to erect a reading room on school grounds, now the site of Golden Bay High School. As the committee, 17 years later, in 1886, requested permission to move ‘the library building’ to a new location it is fairly safe to say that this original reading room was the first Tãkaka Public Library and it was to here that the shipped box of books was destined. Although permission to move the library was granted in 1886 this does not appear to have happened for many years, for in September 1891 there was yet another request to move the building.

The Tãkaka Library offers more than you might expect. Whether you want to explore a new hobby, learn a new language, find the latest bestseller, or delve into a new sport, they have you covered. The local library is one of Golden Bay’s most loved resources and they are currently celebrating 15 years in their new building.

On Friday, Tãkaka Library hosted a morning tea for past and present staff as well as the community, it was a

The move finally took place sometime between 1891 and 1900 and the small library building was established on the corner of Reilly and Commercial Streets next to the Oddfellows Hall on land that now houses the Pioneer Memorial.

When the new Post Office was built nearby in 1900, both the Oddfellows Hall and the library appeared so shabby in comparison that they were both repainted and improved, subscribers to the library putting their hands into their pockets for the occasion.

TĀKAKA LIBRARY Celebrating 15 years

of community heart

Three years later, in 1947 the matter was raised once more with the Town Board and public meetings were held to discuss the formation of a free public library for Tãkaka.

On 3 June 1947 the matter of establishing a library Tãkaka Town Board. Calls for a public meeting were made which took place that same month. The Nelson Evening Mail of 21 June 1947 stated that it was “remarkable that [in] a township the size of Tãkaka there was no library.”

The public meeting produced results. It was resolved to establish a public library in Tãkaka under the jurisdiction of the Town Board and that a librarian would be appointed at a salary of £26 per year. There would also be a fund of £50 to purchase books. A set of subscription charges were suggested and rules were to be set by a special library committee. A month later the Town Board chose not to charge a subscription rate. All residents of the town district could use the library for free.

In 1954 there were 989 members and issues for the first month of operation were 2,750. Forty years later issues for one month were 10,168. During the 1960s the Golden Bay County Council took over the administration of the library from the library committee.

In 1905 plans were laid to put up a bigger building to include a public reading room but in 1911 this had still not been done. The Tãkaka library remained on this portion of land until the mid-1930s but it began to seriously struggle with funding. The Town Board was repeatedly asked for assistance and in July 1938 the Board was asked to take control of the library completely. Nothing appears to have been done about this until 1947.

In the mid-1930s the small building was bought by the Catholic Church, given the name The Hibernian Hall, and remained on the corner of Commercial St and Reilly St for many years. Residents remember that the building had two small rooms and was painted white with green facing. Above the door the word “LIBRARY” was painted in black. There was a ditch, where the footpath is now, with a small wooden bridge with hand railings leading from the road to the library. In later years Alf Hoare had a hairdressing salon in there and it was also used as a meeting room and a place for Girl Guides to gather. There was also a telephone surreptitiously installed in the back room and here an illicit bookmaking business was carried on in secret!

On 14 June 1937 an advertisement appeared in the Golden Bay Times. Daisy Goodwin, who had a small book-selling and stationery shop next door to the chemist on Commercial St, invited readers to ‘Join our circulating library.’ It would appear that Miss Goodwin stepped into the gap left by the ailing library. Unfortunately, the shop burned down in 1944 leaving the town with no book service at all.

On 12 September 1947 the library was officially opened. It was located in a front office of the existing Council Building opposite the Post Office and from the minute it opened it was always deemed inadequate. In 1949 steps were taken to secure the vacant Post and Telegraph department section between the postmaster’s house and the Bank of New Zealand. The idea was to erect a purpose-built library with a small car park beside it. A tender for the work was accepted in 1953.

Tãkaka Library is open Mon – Thurs 9.30am –5pm, Friday 9.30am – 6pm and from 9.30am –1pm on a Saturday.

The Tãkaka Memorial Library was officially opened on 25 April 1955, although it had been in operation since July 1954. A memorial plaque to those who gave their lives in the two World Wars was erected in the entranceway.

16 WEDNESDAY 10 MAY 2023

Once again the library proved inadequate for the demands of a book-loving population. A new library building was to be constructed alongside the car park opening off Reilly Street. The old memorial building was vacated in 2008 and the new library began operations in April of that year. It’s a fabulous and much loved resource that brings the community together.

From humble beginnings and one case of imported books the Tãkaka Library has grown and transformed to house an immense collection of resources.

More than books, the library now contains magazines, music, DVDs, newspapers, community art and access to the internet as well as other electronic resources. And all you need to access this wealth of information is a library card, which you can obtain for free, simply drop into your local TDC library with some identification. It’s a quick 5 minute process which will give you access to not just the Tãkaka Library, but also the Murchison, Motueka and Richmond Libraries.

Whether you’re looking to gain knowledge, find inspiration, or just unwind and contemplate, the Tãkaka Library has got something for you.

You’ll find them at 3 Junction Street in Tãkaka, they are open Mon – Thurs 9.30am – 5pm, Friday 9.30am – 6pm and from 9.30am – 1pm on a Saturday.

Make a difference, volunteer for Motueka RDA

Motueka Riding for Disabled (RDA) is a shining example of how a not-for-profit charitable trust can make a significant difference in the lives of people in our community. With approximately 50 riders, seven horses, and ponies, the RDA offers riding sessions every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 9 am and 1.00 pm to help empower and uplift young people by teaching new skills, building relationships, and boosting their confidence and resilience.

At the heart of the RDA’s mission is the focus on ensuring success for tamariki (children) of all ages and abilities. The organisation’s youngest rider is two years old, and the oldest is 21, although there is no age limit, all riders have individual goals. The RDA’s team is passionate about working with children with physical, social or emotional needs and helping them achieve their dreams.

You imagine it, I will make it happen!! TASMAN ROCKS!

We’re excited to announce that from 1st June 2023, our clinics will be changing to Vetlife, enabling us to build upon our commitment to serve our community.

Motueka RDA are looking for new committee members and volunteers.

Over the past three years, Motueka RDA has made significant progress in expanding its reach and impact in the community. The current committee has done a fantastic job of ensuring that they have a solid foundation to take it into the future. Their team have been focusing on forging strong connections with schools, support agencies, and whãnau (family).

Motueka RDA has plans for an extension to their arena, extending their sensory trail, and planting to improve their grounds. Last year, they ran an exciting pilot Whãnau Programme that enabled parents and children referred through the Family Court to participate together in a safe and fun activity. It was very successful and they are very keen to develop other whãnau-focused programmes to benefit the community.

Motueka RDA is grateful for its amazing volunteers who contribute their time and energy to bring a special dynamic to the organisation. Volunteers are an essential part of the team and help with various aspects of running the RDA, including horse grooming, leading horses during riding sessions, and administrative tasks.

No special horse expertise is needed as the RDA provides support and training. Volunteering for the RDA is a wonderful way to meet new people and learn new skills. It’s an excellent opportunity for people who want to make a difference in the community and gain a sense of fulfilment by helping others.

In July, some of the RDA’s key committee members will be taking a step back to take a well-earned break, although they will remain available to ensure a smooth handover to a new committee. The RDA is looking for new committee members, including a president and treasurer, to take them into the next phase of Motueka RDA’s development.

Becoming a part of the Motueka RDA community is a rewarding experience that offers many benefits. Volunteers will have the chance to work with horses, which is an excellent way to improve their physical and emotional well-being. Being in nature and being around horses can reduce stress and anxiety, and offer a sense of calmness and relaxation. Moreover, volunteering for the RDA is a great way to develop new skills and gain valuable experience that can be used in other areas of life. Being a part of the Motueka RDA community means making lifelong friendships with like-minded individuals and creating lasting memories that will stay with you forever.

By joining the Motueka RDA community, individuals have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others, while also benefiting from the physical and emotional benefits of working with horses.

To find out more about how you can volunteer and support this incredible organisation go to visit their website motuekarda.nz give them a call on 021 115 1720 or explore their social media facebook. com/MotuekaRDA

Return to Chatham Cup comp for Motueka AFC

Saturday afternoon at Memorial Park, Motueka, saw the rebirth of the Chatham Cup competition for Motueka AFC. The Motueka Garden Motel, Motueka AFC 1st XI took on FC Nelson AFC Inc in the first round of the famous knock out competition, for New Zealand football. Motueka last entered this prestigious FA style tournament in 1977, unfortunately going down 1-7 to Porirua in the first round. First division football saw only two competition games this weekend, as several teams took to the pitch against Chatham Cup oppo-

nents. The Chatham Cup has been an institution in New Zealand since its introduction in 1923. The trophy was gifted to the New Zealand Football Assn by the crew of the HMS Chatham, as a way of thanking the New Zealand Public for the goodwill shown to Sailors, during their time in this part of the world. It has become the most sought-after football honour in New Zealand rivalled every year, with the only exceptions of 1937, between 1941 and 1944, the corona virus pandemic of 2020 and the deferment of the 2021 final to the first week in March 2022. Auckland City are

the current defending champions, with Auckland based clubs having won the competition 39 times. This year is the 95th year of knock out rounds and the 100th anniversary year since its inaugural edition. It consists of a preliminary round, four competition rounds, quarter finals, semi-finals and finals, played out from 130 starting teams.

The Motueka Garden Motel, Motueka AFC 1st XI kicked off against FC Nelson AFC at 2pm on Saturday, in front of local supporters, proudly wearing the black and yellow coloured strip.

Five-year-old Luke Beurskens carried the match ball onto the field, escorting the referee and linesmen. Each player from the two men’s teams were escorted onto the field by the junior Motueka AFC players. The junior (under 10 years) players wore their own team strip and younger children wore a black supporters t-shirt. The two teams then shook hands at the halfway line before moving to position for kick-off which was also captured on a live feed. The next nail-biting 90 minutes were loudly cheered by Motueka supporters from the football clubrooms

and side lines. Two goals were scored in the first half by Jimmy Latimer and Ben Kerry, with none in the second half, to end on a final score of 2-1 to Motueka. This means that Motueka will progress to round two of the New Zealand Chatham Cup.
