Forget Hollywood, Bollywood or even Wellywood, tonight is all about Nellywood. The red carpet will be rolled out at the Theatre Royal tonight for the world premiere of the movie Kiwi Flyer, a family movie shot in Nelson and featuring a host of Nelsonians and the city’s famous Collingwood St Trolley Derby. Stars Dai Henwood, Vince Martin and Tandi Wright will gather with director Tony Simpson and Nelson actors Brittany Dick, Myer van Gosliga, Matt French and David de Thierry for the premiere. Another Nelson actor Doug Colling is in London so won’t be at the showing. The event will have a distinctly Nelson theme with the Nelson Pipe Band playing on the balcony and the stars arriving in cars from the World of Wearable Art and Classic Car Museum. The film is about a boy’s journey to compete in the Collingwood St Trolley Derby. He must overcome a loan shark, a nasty rival and a mum who doesn’t share his vision of trolley derby glory. The red carpet event starts at 6.30pm tonight with everyone welcome to attend before the premiere at 7.30pm. Tony, a former Nelson man who wrote the script and directed the film, says he has been overwhelmed with the
support Nelson has shown the movie. “Everyone just totally understood what I was trying to do, embraced it and made it so easy to do things. Even in the film Nelson is almost one of the characters in the movie. Everywhere we turned the camera it just looked fantastic.” Tony says he is currently signing a deal with a North American company to distribute the film in North America and the rest of the world and he is excited about tonight’s premiere. “I’m nervous and excited, this is the home crowd and I know that they will probably be fairly biased but I’m just so thrilled to be able to share it with them because it’s really not just my movie but their movie as well.” Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the film will be a great advertisement for the city and he was looking forward to watching it. President of the Nelson club Tim Bayley says he can’t wait to see the movie on the big screen and was extra excited after the announcement Monday night that Nelson is set to host the New Zealand Trolley Grand Prix and has declared itself as the Trolley Derby Capital of New Zealand. The movie will be available for those not lucky enough to be at the premiere at Nelson’s State Cinema 6 from September 27. To view photos of the red carpet event, visit www.nelsonweekly.co.nz.

summer.” But Graeme arrived home that night to find an email had arrived early into his protest, informing him that Nelson City Council were seeking independent legal advice over a $600 a year solar savings scheme that Graeme contests. He says he was not aware of the panel and the associated costs when he bought the house, on Waimea Rd. While his time on the soap box was short-lived, Graeme says it was a great experience and he received a great response from passing public on the day and comments stemming from his appearance in the Nelson Weekly last week. “A lot of people saw the paper, I’ve had a lot of comments, and people were coming up to me and saying, do you want to hear my story? On the day everyone was trading off these stories, from parking fines to rates,” he says. Lewis Stanton recently won his battle with NCC after protesting for 19 months on Trafalgar St, over issues with camping on council-owned land with his horse. Graeme says the idea to protest came about after feeling like he wasn’t given a fair chance by NCC and waiting for a response to his complaints that he felt was never going to come, and he is pleased with their decision to look into his concerns. “All I wanted was them to just give me a fair go, not to just give me an arbitrary decision, telling me no.” Graeme was impressed with the way his protest on ‘speakers corner’ was received, and he was happy that others had approached him and shared their stories.

AirfArE cUTS: Air New Zealand has cut airfares for Nelson travellers by as much as 20 per cent. The national airline says the cuts are to help stimulate tourism in Nelson and other regions around the country. The cuts come after a “think regional” tourism forum held in Nelson earlier this month which was attended by representatives from all over the country. Examples of the cuts, for a seat-only fare one way and for one person, from Nelson to Auckland, is a drop of 20 per cent to $79. From Wellington to Nelson or Christchurch to Nelson is now $69, down 12 per cent from $79.

Pepper the pig safe after dog attack A young farm pig is recovering well after it was attacked by pig dogs near Dovedale last week, but Nelson SPCA manager Donna Walzl says it is just the latest incident it has had to deal with involving pig dogs. The pig, named Pepper by SPCA staff, was found by locals after it was mauled by the dogs having strayed from its enclosure. Donna says its life was saved because of the actions of those that found it and they are still looking for its owners. She says the incident wasn’t the dogs’, or
dog owners’, fault but highlights increasing problems with pig dog owners. Recently the centre has had a spike in the number of unwanted pig dogs or pig dog puppies being dropped off to the centre and they are very hard to rehome, says Donna. “We often have dogs surrendered which are failed pig dogs and therefore have had little or no family interaction, no house training and even no concept of walking on a lead. There are only a few homes that are willing to take on this
type of dog which can struggle to adapt to family life.” She says most pig dog owners are very good are controlling breeding and looking after their dogs but she would like to see them help to educate younger hunters who are the main culprits. “We’re very concerned by the latest trends and it isn’t fair to the dogs. We’ve had to put some down due to disease and have really struggled to find homes for others. The SPCA isn’t a dumping ground for unwanted pig dogs,” she says.

Sidetember grows on Nelson Andrew Board The latest facial hair awareness drive is growing on its Nelson participants. James Hurst and Kendall Wills make up half of the participants from Nelson in Sidetember, a campaign for Brain Injury Awareness, during September. The idea is in its first year and was started in Sydney, to raise money and awareness for the Australian Brain Injury Foundation. It made its way to New Zealand via a friend of the founder,
Brenda Lowen, who works at Medlab South at Nelson Hospital. She was able to convince three of her workmates to take part, along with other friends in Wellington and Auckland. The fourth Nelson participant is a barman at Bar Berlin. James says he was happy to take part and is much nicer than having his head shaved and taking part in Movember, both of which he has done. “The biggest concern [about the sideburns] is how many greys are in them,” he jokes.

Community funding announced Nelson City Council has allocated grants from its community assistance fund to almost half of those who applied, following hearings last week. As reported by Nelson Weekly last week, the applications far exceeded the available funds, and mayor Aldo Miccio says tough decisions had to be made. From a total of 105 applications to the Community Assistance Fund, 48 across a wide range of agencies, received a contribution toward their project or activity. Aldo says he would like to thank all the groups for the effort they put into their applications. “Through these applications we’ve gained a greater insight into the excellent work that is happening in all sectors of the community and we’ve done our best to try and provide support that will strengthen these agencies as much as possible.” Twenty contract applications and 28 one-off grant applications were funded, totalling

Q: After paying off my Mum’s funeral I don’t want my kids to have to pay for mine. What is the best way to save for this? A: If you can pay ahead for your own funeral, it will ease the financial burden on your family when you die.
It is important to have funds available to your next of kin as soon as you die so that funeral expenses can be paid. If you have savings for a funeral, then make sure they can access these. Your estate may take a while to be wound-up so your money may be unavailable for some time.
Kendall says it is for a good cause so was easily convinced but his wife wasn’t so keen saying ‘not in this lifetime’. “But I thought I’d better do it because Brenda wanted some support so that was that really. And Brenda says she is taking part next year by growing some with drugs similar to the Belarusian athletes,” he jokes. Brenda says the intention is to link Sidetember with the Brain Injury Association in New Zealand next year and it would work well the current awareness month.

City prepares for earthquake Sinead Ogilvie
Management Nelson Tasman is confident people are ready and know how to protect themselves in the event of an earthquake. “Our campaigns have people prepared, and the most crucial thing is do people know what to do? Lives are lost when people don’t know what to do.” Weak spots for Nelson should an earthquake hit are traffic jams on its two arterial roads, so having a plan to meet with family and friends is crucial. “People flee and during the floods we had people taking three hours to get from Richmond to Nelson. A national earthquake drill next week is vitally important according to officials, saying lives are lost when people don’t know how to react. Thousands of Nelsonians will take part in the nationwide Shakeout earthquake drill on September 26, helping prepare the city in case of a large earthquake. Mayor behind ‘teeth for life’ campaign Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio jumped in the chair to help promote World Oral Health Day last week saying he’s right behind the “teeth for life” theme this year. World Oral Health Day was last Wednesday and local dentists used it to highlight the importance of brushing your teeth and keeping your teeth for life. Dr Roby Beaglehole, principal dental officer for Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, says the number of people visiting the dentist has dropped by 15 per cent in the past ten years but the number of children receiving a general anaesthetic for decay has nearly doubled in that time. “We ask that parents use the adult-strength fluoride toothpaste, in small quantities, twice a day for their children’s teeth. You don’t have to use very much but for the best protection for your child’s teeth it is recommended that the toothpaste has fluoride in it.” Guidelines for parents recommend that as soon as a child has teeth, they should be brushed, using just a smear of fluoride toothpaste on a small, soft toothbrush for a child under six years and a pea-sized amount for a child six years and over. “It can be difficult to brush your toddler’s teeth, but keep trying because healthy teeth are important to your child’s development and for the future health of their permanent teeth,” says Roby. Aldo says he was happy to support the campaign. “Children’s health is critical to their future development and creating happy, healthy children. So anything to help that cause has my support,” he says. Oral Health care is free for children and young people from 0 to 17 years of age, phone 0800 TALK TEETH (0800 8255 83384) to enrol.

The Harbour Master’s
diary
• Calling into the port last week were container ships Hoheplate, the two spirit ships, Maersk’s Angeles and the Tasman Sky. The Transfuture 7 made a call to drop off cars and pick up MDF. Log vessel Uni Challenge picked up a full load of logs and the Westport discharged cement. • It was with sadness we heard of the major fire on board Talley’s Amaltal Columbia. It was a great relief that all crew were uninjured and the benefit of having drills and experienced crew really made a big difference in saving the vessel from being a total loss. The Amaltal Columbia was towed back from Lyttelton by the Amaltal Mariner on Monday and will undergo extensive work once a full assessment has been carried out. • One wave, one wave closer to oblivion. On the weekend the harbour master learned that six people in small wakas decided to brave the swell at the blind channel and was involved in a subsequent search and rescue. One wave was too much for a woman and her waka, and she ended up swimming in a two to three knot current. The very lucky woman made it to shore with some assistance and the waka was lost forever. • Know your limits, whilst there was some experience in the team, it is our view they shouldn’t be there. If in doubt don’t go out.

Nordic walkers pick up numbers Rain or shine a group of keen Nordic walkers are not only helping themselves, but helping Nelson’s Multiple Sclerosis society too. The walkers set off on weekly excursions to keep fit and get their hearts racing, while the costs paid to participate in the group are donated to Nelsons MS society. Nordic walking is a special style of exercise used by skiers in the off season. The specially designed walking poles encourage better posture, coordination and use 90 per cent of the body’s muscles. The group is made of anyone who is keen to get involved and get fit and those living with
disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis find the walking hugely beneficial, as the activity helps left and right coordination and can help with balance difficulties. Cher Hunter, a personal trainer who has worked with the MS society in Nelson for the past 15 months, attends and organises the group and says while the group supports the MS society it is for anyone who wants to enjoy and take part in an effective fitness activity. “People that have come along have had some amazing changes to their physical fitness, and it’s a lot of fun,” says Cher.

Broadgreen student wins speech comp Broadgreen Intermediate School student Fynn Sawyer’s poke at social media has won him an inter-school speech competition, held in Richmond last week. Students were selected from 13 different schools for the competition which is run in conjunction with the Richmond Lions and Power Talk Waimea Clubs. The Richmond Lions sponsor the prizes and certificates and the Power Talk Waimea Club organises the competition. Fynn’s speech offered insight into the overwhelming popularity of social media. He capped his speech off with the suggestion of a new form of media called YouTwitFace – combining YouTube, Twitter and Facebook into one. His speech created plenty of laughter amongst the audience as he won the Year 8 title. Another gentle and humorous approach, covering social media was Lydia Dunne from St Paul’s Catholic School in the Year 7 category. Lydia entertained the audience with a look at the change in head shape if people

New teachers ready for classroom Sinead Ogilvie Two years ago Nelson’s University of Canterbury teachers college was threatened with closure, but it survived and a group of students say it was a master stroke. Twenty one Nelsonians are about to graduate from the Nelson campus and for the soon-to-be teachers, the best part of their degree was being able to study in Nelson. Most say they hope to find jobs in local schools and bring their passion for the region into their teaching. The Nelson campus offers face-to-face learning in a Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Primary). The programme also has the strong support of local principals. Don McLean, principal of Hampden St School, says the campus is a real bonus to our community. "The students are Nelson people wanting to study and work here. As a school we get to know the students when they come on placements. They are a very impressive group of people; I’ve actually just hired one of them for next year,” he says. Student Barry Huhu, 36, has a young family of three and while moving them to a different city
was an option, he loves Nelson, and the opportunity to study locally means he can now stay and give back to his own community. Something out of the norm for most school leavers, student Simon Baker, 20, didn’t want to move away after college. “The cliché is you finish college and go to university in a big city, but it’s just not for everybody, I didn’t want to leave Nelson because I just loved the lifestyle.” Having a local teaching campus is also beneficial for the schools, as the students were dispersed around the region for work placements bringing new ideas, practices and theories to our schools about how teachers can educate children. The upside to a local campus in a smaller town is that the degree is more personal and networks formed with lecturers and fellow students are stronger. Mary Cameron, 22, began her teaching degree In Christchurch, but soon moved back to Nelson to complete it after she found it too impersonal. “You’re going into these classes with heaps of different people, and it was really hard to form consistent groups to work with. The sense of community that we have here is great.”
kept the cell phone up to their ear for longer periods. A Year 6 competition was held on Monday night with Wakefield School student Amy-Rose Berthelson’s speech on the mobility scooter taking top honours. Twelve different schools were represented.

Who is Elim? $1.5M church Elim Church on Main Rd Stoke, has been a fixture of the community for decades, providing a safe place for locals, a helping hand and a place for children to have fun. But what is Elim? What does it mean and why that name? Elim churches were birthed out of the Welsh revival. The Elim Pentecostal Church was founded in 1915 by a Welshman named George Jeffreys who was an outstanding evangelist and church pastor. A well-known evangelist, Smith Wigglesworth, came to New Zealand for crusades in 1922. This was the beginning of what was to be known as the Pentecostal Church of New Zealand. In August 1949 negotiations were set in motion by the Conference of the Pentecostal Church of New Zealand to link up with the Elim Church of Great Britain. The Elim Pentecostal church in the United Kingdom has more than 500 churches and more than 9000 churches in many countries around the world. The Elim Church of New Zealand has more than 40 churches throughout the nation with significant churches in the main centres, where thousands worship. The name Elim was picked as it was the name of an oasis mentioned in the Bible, located on the escape route of the Israelites from Egypt. It was
the idea of finding shelter and refreshment that inspired the name Elim. Every year Elim holds its Annual Conference where over 1000 people from around New Zealand gather for three days of worship, teaching and fellowship. It is its belief that Elim has a significant part to play in the world today and they are confidently looking forward to what God will do in the future. Nelson pastor Richard Batchelar says the church is going strong and aims to help people, care for people and do good work in the community. Richard and his family have been at the Nelson church for a few years now and he says attendance has doubled since and he is looking forward to seeing it grow further. “It’s actually about loving people and helping people do life. It doesn’t matter if you’re in our church or not, we just want to help people. We say to people ‘don’t let life do you, do life’.” Richard says it is exciting times for the church, with a new building now approved, a full preschool, an after school care programme and courses for families from budgeting advice to parenting and relationship help, there is something for everyone. “We care, we want to help and we are at the start of something very exciting here.”
Elim Christian Centre pastor Richard Batchelar with his wife Maria and children from left; Bella, 2, Eva, 10 months and Joel, 4.
Elim strongly believes that a church is not about the building, it’s about the people. With that said, the church is about to enter an exciting time in its history, building a brand new facility on its Main Rd Stoke property. The $1.5 million building will house a main hall, office and administration block, meeting and conference room and will allow for expansion of its popular after school programme. The new church, which will be built next to the current church, has resource consent from Nelson City Council and a target date of late February is pencilled in for work to begin. Church pastor Richard Batchelar says the new church will cater for future growth of the church but also give the community a new facility. “It will be an asset for Stoke and hopefully nice and appealing to the eye for people that drive past.” The new building will house a 250 seat auditorium, a 70 seat conference room, offices and storage space. It will sit right next to Main Rd Stoke with the current church demolished after the build for car park space. The church currently has about a third of the cost

A church involv in our commun Elim strives to have a positive impact on its community and you could hardly doubt it’s done that in Stoke. Aside from running popular school holiday programmes, after school care programmes and a full pre-school, Elim also volunteers in the community and runs various courses to help locals. Two years ago Elim took its close relationship with Stoke School a step further to provide lunch for its pupils each Monday during winter. Pastor Richard Batchelar says there was a need and it was something positive the church could do, so each Monday students get a bowl of soup and a bread roll to fill them up and get them ready for an afternoon of learning. Richard says it’s rewarding to be able to help and while the church has a family focus, it isn’t all about the children. Elim also runs relationship enrichment courses, parenting courses and free budgeting courses, which are WINZ approved. Richard says in the next five years the church

Hockey on a high Nelson Hockey had three reasons to celebrate on the weekend. Its senior men’s side claimed the 61st Maadi Cup despite losing its final match 5-2 to Marlborough. The women’s team won the Pope Shield for the 45th time, comfortably seeing off West Coast 7-0 and then Marlborough 4-1 at Saxton Field. Nelson also won the Gladstone Cup, which sees the second best women’s teams from each region contest a round robin. Nelson B beat West Coast B 4-1 and then accounted for Marlborough 3-1. Nelson’s other results in the Maadi Cup included a 6-4 win over Nelson B and an 8-0 thrashing of the West Coast. Pat O’ConnorLeys of Nelson took out the Boustridge/O’Sullivan Cup for outstanding Under-21 player. This weekend sees the senior and junior finals being held at Saxton Field as the club season comes to a close.

ATTENTION ALL NELSON GREY POWER MEMBERS Gordon Currie announced his resignation as President of Nelson Grey Power (Assoc) Inc, effective from 12 July 2012. His resignation was made Public on 17 July 2012 and since then his resignation as President of Nelson Grey Power(Assoc) Inc has been accepted by the National Body of Grey Power New Zealand Federation Inc. Both prior to and since Mr Currie’s resignation 5 long term and experienced members of the Executive Committee have resigned. As a result NELSON GREY POWER (ASSOCIATION) INCORPORATED is now an UNCONSTITUTIONAL INCORPORATED SOCIETY and cannot legally operate until a new President, Vice-President and Executive Committee is elected. A SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING is required for this purpose. Thirty Three (33) members have requisitioned this Special General Meeting to take place as provided for under the Associations Constitution. It is now important for as many financial Nelson Grey Power members as possible to attend the forth coming Special General Meeting at which an election for the new President and at least 5 new Committee members will take place. The Special General meeting will be held on Thursday 27 September 2012 at 1pm at the Warnes Bowls Stadium, 206 Songer Street, Stoke. The National President of the New Zealand Grey Power Federation will be attending this meeting. Membership of Nelson Grey Power (Assoc) Inc has been declining in recent years and has dropped from 14000 to 8600. There are worrying signs that the membership will fall even further so now is the time to elect a new President, Vice-President and Committee with the drive and determination to take Nelson Grey Power into a new era where issues facing our older population are likely to increase and a strong voice will be needed. If you would like to play a role by being elected as President, Vice-President or as an Executive Committee member then you can obtain a NOMINATION FORM from the Special General Meeting Convener by telephoning 03 547 9472. All Nominations must be received by 4pm on Tuesday 25 September 2012. Neville Male Special General Meeting Convener (On behalf of Special General Meeting Requisitionists)
The Whakatu Women's rugby team after finishing third at a secondary school tournament in Christchurch last week. The team featured players from Motueka, Marlborough, Nayland College and Nelson College for Girls. Whakatu, fielding a much smaller side than the other teams, was impressive in pool play and earned high praise from other coaches and bowed out in the semi-final against one of the powerhouses of women's rugby in Christchurch Rangi Ruru Girls High School. Whakatu went on to win the plate while Christchurch Girls High School won the entire competition. Photo: Andrew Board. Car dealer Paul Dowell knows a thing or two about cars so he recently joined a group of Nelson folk in Bonneville, Utah, USA to help set a new speed record in a Mini. The team did it and Paul gave it his thumbs up after setting the record last month, a fantastic achievement from the whole team.

Locals off to world sailing champs Two members of the Nelson Yacht Club are about to set sail to Santa Cruz to compete in the Flying Dutchman World Championships. The championships are held over five days and attract teams from all over the world, including Nelson’s own Flying Dutchman duo Dave Gibb and Alistair Daines. The pair will be heading over to America on September 20 and are one of only four teams from New Zealand that will be attending. While the longtime sailors are no rookies to competing on the world stage, having attended the Napier and Melbourne worlds in recent years, Dave says the travel involved for this year’s world championships is an exciting aspect. “’I’m really looking forward to it, I’ve never travelled that far before, it is just a whole new experience,” he says. There are 46 entries in the championship and Dave and Alistair have set their sights on placing in the top 15 . The five day competition means the pair will compete twice a day and the races are an hour and a half long each. On arrival in Santa Cruz Dave says they will get straight into preparation for the contest, going through processes and getting comfortable with the location. “We will be getting back into the groove I think, seeing what the conditions are like – apparently

Getting their boat to America took a bit of hard work and Dave worked with the other New Zealand competitors to get all of the Flying Dutchman overseas. After a month of travel, the pair’s boat is now sitting in Santa Cruz with the three other New Zealand entries. If you’re wondering what the fish are doing at present, no one really knows because they haven’t been able to get out. What we can tell you is that fishing up at Stephens for kingies has slowed down considerably. There are some big gurnard around Delaware Bay and a few schools of kahawai have been seen in the harbour. Snapper should turn up in a few weeks if they follow last year’s pattern. Other than that we haven’t heard of too many fish being caught in recent weeks. The past 10 Sundays or so have all been wet, with enough water on the lawn to launch your boat in. Everyone is well and truly over it and looking at the forecast for the coming week it looks pretty good right up to Sunday. You wouldn’t bet your house on it not changing but it’s definitely good enough to start preparing the boat for an outing. So this week would be a timely opportunity to check the boat over before that first journey to the boat ramp. Every year someone gets caught out on that first trip with a problem or mishap that could have been easily prevented by some basic checks at home. If you haven’t had the motor serviced yet, then now is the time to book it in with your local dealer for peace of mind boating. If you own a boat you will always have yearly preventative maintenance to do, and even though it is not always cheap, it is foolish to put off and will cost you more in the long run if overlooked. Don’t forget your checks on rods, reels, nets, knives, gaffs, tackle and your trusty old scallop dredge. Check all the guides on the rods are intact and that any ceramic guides
Paul Maskell with a big Stephens Passage Blue Cod caught recently. haven’t cracked. Check the nylon on your reel. If it’s more than a few seasons old replace it and if its near new pull off a good 10-15m as this is often stretched and nicked. Make sure the drags and free spool are all ok and spray with CRC tackle guard. Restock the tackle box as necessary and sharpen your knives as required. Now that you’ve completed all your checks, you can hit the water with confidence that your boat is completely ready to go and all that you need to do now is join the club to find out where the fish are. We put out reports to our members via email of where the fish are biting, which gear and tackle is working and what bait is the flavour of the week. Call now and be first on the scene rather than finding out the fish have moved and you missed out because you weren’t a member. Email us at dawnbreakersfc@gmail. com for more information about the club.

Nelson College Netball Nelson College for Girls A coach, Kathryn Orange definitely gave her players an A for effort this season. They began in Grade 1 and gained promotion into the elite grade for the second round and the Tasman Trophy. Kathryn was appreciative of the opportunity to “look at players” within the tougher competition and also to test combinations. Nelson was relegated to Grade 1 for the championship round and set itself the goal of taking out the title. Nelson went into the semis as top seed however was beaten by Waimea College 10A and was forced to take the hard road
to the final by playing two games on finals day to eventually turn the tables on Waimea to take a well deserved 26 – 19 win. Nelson finished 13th from 32 teams in the A Grade of the recent South Island Secondary Schools Tournament in Dunedin. They fared well in their pool play with two wins from three however their crossover pool was a virtual “pool of death” when they met the class of Craighead, Southland Girls and Columba College. They rounded off the tournament with impressive wins over Verdon College and Rangiora High. Kathryn is immensely proud of her girls – they played in a great environment, developed well throughout the season and valued one another’s team work. Ruth Swaney and Rosie Bywater to South Island commitments and Ellie Bell toured with the NZ Under 17 team. There were also a number of injuries that added to the disruption. There is considerable talent coming through at Nelson College with having the 10A team take the Senior 4 championship. Penny-Sue Franklin has been at the helm and had all but one player in her 9A team last year. Having the same group of players for two years has enabled Penny to develop the team and build on the platform set in the previous year. The development was proven as they bettered their 13th placing at the South Island Tournament as Year 9s to a commendable 6th this year. While recognising the talent and skill of Waimea College it was disappointing to Penny-Sue that her girls only met in the South Island Tournament as they were in a higher grade in the local competition. The 10As spent the entire season in Senior

Standout players for the season were shooters Ariana Wiremu and Abbey Franklin who had a beautiful understanding of one another’s play. Merekara McGuinnietty and Michaela Collier were a formidable defensive unit and had a great eye for the intercept ball. Mid-courters Paige Woodall and Charlotte Timms were the big improvers throughout the season and were pivotal links through court. And while there are a number of spots “up for grabs” for 2013 with only three remaining, there is plenty of talent coming through the ranks with players like Nicole Drummond and Julia Thompsett the shining lights from this year’s B team as well as the 10As.

89 riders line up for motorbike classic Dylan Waghorn and Ethan Bruce have taken out New Zealand’s only six hour motorcycle endurance race, completing nine laps between them at the Morley Honda 6 Hour Ironman and Pony Express. The race was held in the Hira Forest on Sunday and brought riders from all over the country to the event, hosted by the Nelson Motorcycle Club. The ironman sees riders contest the entire six hours individually while the pony express comprises of teams of two working in a relay style format. Riders head into the pits at the end of each 40 kilometre lap, before officially clocking in for the next one. Some rid-
ers in the ironman don’t even get off their bikes, allowing the crew to fuel the motorcycle and the rider in the shortest time possible. Glen Manning of Christchurch was second overall but first place in the ironman. Glen was the only rider in the ironman to complete nine laps and did so in six hours 43 minutes. Nelson rider Sam Millson was second in the ironman and third overall. In the ATV ironman, Sam George took top honours, edging Stephen Bell in a time of 6 hours 15 minutes 17 seconds. Both riders completed seven laps. Doug Ledbrook was third in six hours 34 minutes, finishing just six laps.
Dream season for FC Nelson
FC Nelson might need to build a bigger trophy cabinet following Saturday’s Price Charity Cup final. FC Nelson Fuji Xerox collected the knockout trophy courtesy of a 4-1 win over Queen Street Pharmacy Richmond Athletic in testing conditions at Jubilee Park. The win means each FC Nelson side competing in the top league has claimed silverware in its first season, after FC Nelson Sprig & Fern won the Nelson Pine Industries division one championship. Fuji Xerox coach Robbie Hansen says the side was rapt to finish the season on a high note, having come within a whisker of winning the league. “I’m really chuffed for the guys, they have worked hard throughout the season and they deserved to get something out of it,” says Robbie. Ben Pitcaithly scored a brace on Saturday with Sean Parkes and Johnny Gough (pictured right) also contributing on the score sheet. Two other knockout fixtures were held prior to the Price Charity Cup final. AMI Nelson Suburbs 2nd XI beat Motueka 1st XI 3-1 to claim the Gould and Tout Trophy, which was presented to captain Danny Walsh by All White Jeremy Brockie in the clubrooms after the match. Golden Bay beat Tahunanui 2nd XI 1-0 in the A R Hurst Trophy, which is contested by division three sides. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
In some of the other pony express classes, Craig and Connor Easton won the parent and child race completing seven laps in just under six hours and 40 minutes. Tobie Christen and Brent Nalder completed eight laps in the two ATV riders. While overall winners Dylan and Ethan completed nine laps in six hours, 22 minutes to take out the two riders unders class, which consists of two stroke motorcycles under 201cc and four stroke under 350cc. Scott Orchard and Scott Jennings won the two riders overs class, amassing eight laps over the time period. Overall 89 riders took part in the event, which is now in its 17th year.
