New pain for Natureland Natureland is again in for a fight for survival after the trust that runs the zoo announced last week that it was pulling the plug on managing it. The Orana Wildlife Trust told Nelson City Council that it was withdrawing from operating the park because of the impact the Canterbury earthquakes has had on its
own park. NCC is now waiting on a staff report before discussing the future of the zoo at a meeting next Tuesday, June 26. Mayor Aldo Miccio says the news is a blow but he understands the situation facing Orana. “We appreciate the effort that they’ve put
into Natureland to date and understand that they’re facing some pretty huge challenges in Christchurch which have meant they can’t focus on improving Natureland as much as they had intended to.” Orana Wildlife Trust took over the operation of Natureland in October 2008. It will operate as usual until a decision on its fu-
ture is made. One possibility is to call for expressions of interest for another operator to take over running Natureland. “We’ll move forward to considering the options and discuss them next week. Hopefully we can find a good long term

Volunteer work ‘best job ever’ Rosie Thomsen SPCA volunteers usually receive thanks in the form of a wagging tail or affectionate purr. This week, those acknowledging their efforts will be much more eloquent. Reina Flavell and Alice Robinson are amongst more than 150 young Nelsonians nominated for the Youth Volunteer Awareness Recognition Event to be held this Thursday as part of Volunteer Awareness Week. The event is run by Volunteer Nelson, Nelson and Tasman councils and Youth Councils, and The New Hub. It will be held at the Nelson College Hall after the New Hub building, the original venue, was given a poor rating on the recent earthquake assessment, leaving activities suspended. The night will include prominent guest speakers and a selection of Nelson youth performances will provide entertainment. Every nominee will receive a certificate to signify their nomination and the contribution they make to society. “Volunteers are the glue that make our communities stick together and there are a lot of young,

Youth volunteers recognised FROM PAGE 1 unsung heroes out there. The event is an opportunity to bring together these remarkable young volunteers and officially thank them,” says Mary Curnow, chair of Volunteer Nelson. For Reina and Alice it was a love for animals that sparked their desire to volunteer. “Volunteering gives me a sense of giving something back to the community,” says Alice, who has volunteered at the SPCA for a year and a half. “I love animals and I want to give time and attention to the ones that don’t have enough of it in their life.” This is the eighth year the event has been held, with a NZ General Social Survey showing that 27 per cent of people aged 15-24 volunteer. Volunteers from 38 local organisations have been nominated. “Youth volunteering is very much alive and well in this region,” says Mary.

A new sculpture has been unveiled on the road leading to Nelson. The six metre-high steel artwork was designed by Spanish artist Juanjo Novella and cost $200,000. It was unveiled on Saturday morning, when lights at the base were lit up for the first time. The piece was shipped over from Spain in two parts and welded together by Reliance Engineering at Port Nelson. Juanjo’s inspiration came from coral and seaweed, with the intention to create a sculpture that accentuated the landscape and the sea-side location. There has been a mixed reaction to the sculpture; some are happy with the piece while others are concerned about the cost and the potential danger it presents to children tempted to climb its frame.

Work starts on crematorium A privately owned crematorium could be opened in Hope as early as October with construction well underway. The crematorium is being built by Gibbons Construction on a site next to Gardens of the World. It will be owned by the Day family, who run the Marsden House Funeral and Cremation Home in Nile St. The Day family also owns Gardens of the World. Public interest in the project, which will make it the only crematorium in the Waimea region,
has been high with many opposed to it. But after a win in the Environment Court, Francis Day says work is progressing well, but an official completion date is yet to be announced. “It’s all on schedule and that’s all we can really say. “There have been no setbacks or holdups so it’s all going to plan,” he says. Building began at the beginning of April. Francis would not disclose how much construction of the crematorium will cost but hinted that it will be the best crematorium in the region. Forget the bach under warm skies, the concert on the Church Steps and even the countdown on television. But one ingredient this week’s New Year’s celebration will have in common with its January 1 cousin is plenty of fun. Matariki – or the Maori new year – is tomorrow night and to celebrate the Victory Community Centre is hosting its fifth annual lantern parade. The celebrations start at 3.40pm, when students of Victory Primary School will perform before the lantern walk starts up the Railway Reserve at 5pm. Performers will line the 2km reserve giving walkers something to take in before reaching the fire poi performers at the end.

Once back at the community centre a hangi will be served at 6pm with more performances, including more fire poi performers, carrying on throughout the night. Organiser Gareth Cashin, from the Victory Community Centre, says he is expecting around 800 to come along during the night. “It’s always a lot of fun with plenty going on, a lot of people in the Victory community get involved and help in some way so it’s a real community effort, but we have people from all over Nelson coming down to take part.” On Saturday the centre is hosting Cawthron Cosmodome Sessions, a blowup cosmodome where locals can see Matariki recreated, showing its significance to Maori and Polynesian people.

Car seats still fitted poorly
“The consequences are pretty major if a seat isn’t fitted properly so it's important we keep doing this [the checks].” Nelson District Parents Centre president Bev Hamilton says parents need to be aware of how to fit a car restraint properly and she saw some pretty "scary" examples on Sunday. "Running these [checks] a bit more often is making people aware of it and it is getting better but we are far from where we deem it to be acceptable. Restraints that aren't fitted right are putting children's lives at risk, as scary as that sounds."

It really is enjoyable taking the time to walk around all the stalls which sell anything from pastries, shortbread, freshly baked pita and other delights. More than 70 per cent of parents who visited a free check point on Sunday did not fit their child’s car restraint properly. But the figure is better than this time last year when more than 90 per cent had the restraint fitted incorrectly. The check point was held at Saxton Field, a joint effort by Baby on the Move, the Nelson Parents Centre and Nelson police. Craig Smith from Baby on the Move says awareness is spreading, which is bringing the figure down but it is still a major problem with 72 per cent failing the standards.

Fifty years together and still going strong When Ken Ivory saw a 1931 Ford Model A with a “for sale” sign on its windscreen, he slammed on his brakes. Driving down Nelson’s Bridge St in 1961, Ken saw what was near identical to the same Model A his grandfather drove him around in when he was a boy. He was quick to get the money out of his pocket and paid up in full – just $220. “You pay more for a tyre these days,” says Ken. The Stoke resident’s love for Ford and his 1931 Model A has taken him right across the country. He worked on an orchard in Hastings around 1939 and used Model Ts to cart the fruit out. He counts 47 times he has done the return trip to Christchurch in his own Model A, which has now clocked up 112,000 kilometres. His collection of Fords has reached 24 different cars, although that is much smaller now. But it’s not just his love for the Ford Motor Company that attracted him to the 1931 Model A. It had a strikingly similarity to the one his grandfather owned. When Ken was a boy he used to go for trips with his grandfather and hoped that one day it would be passed down to him. New Zealand was just com-

ing out of the depression back in those days, so driving around with his grandfather was Ken’s greatest enjoyment. “We’d get in the car with grandma and granddad, get a flask and some sandwiches and go for a drive. We thought it was marvellous.” Ken, a former painting contractor, has been offered close to $25,000 from potential buyers, a much larger figure than when he bought it. But he wants to make sure it stays in the family for the younger generations and is not prepared to sell. Ken was one of the founding members of the Nelson Vintage Car Club and is the only member to have owned the same car since its inception. The car is near identical from when he first bought it, with no crashes and no problems ever occurring. He says that comes down to the condition he keeps it in. In the winter the car is kept inside with its registration put on hold until the warmer months. While the car has reached its 50 year milestone, his future trips to Christchurch could also break the 50 mark. Driving to Christchurch via Kaikoura in the Model A now takes Ken about eight hours – seven if he doesn’t stop off for a cup of tea.

Teachers call out PM Technology teachers at Nayland College have hit back at comments by the Prime Minister that implied they were teaching curriculum from the 1960s, by calling them Aunty Bettys. During a radio interview last week John Key said that people were upset at their proposed cuts to technology teachers because no one wanted to see “Aunty Betty who has been teaching home economics for fifty years” lose her job. That prompted the technology teachers at Nayland to show their creativity by making and wearing “Aunty Betty Buster” badges to show there are no Aunty Betty-types around and the PM was off the mark.
Teacher Annie McCreary says the stereotype of an Aunty Betty teaching technology classes was “busted” long ago. “Yeah, we were hurt. We’ve been pushing so hard to get technology out there, then one man can make a comment like that.” While the comment was probably aimed more at intermediates, Annie says technology teachers are sick of it being labelled as not a valued subject. “It sounds like he doesn’t know what’s going on in schools, basically. They are saying that’s where all the innovation, enterprise and the new design comes from, the kids Nayland College technology teacher from left; Annie McCreary, Pam Charlton, that are doing technology and then they say Damian Roughan, Michaela Nicholas, Richard Wiecharn, Sam Maitland, Tash we are Aunty Bettys.” Cardwell and Cushla Laufkotter. Robbie’s after new owners
The future of Robbie’s Bar and Bistro in Richmond is uncertain says its franchisor, but he is hoping to find a new owner “at a bargain price” to continue running the business. Two weeks ago the local owners of the Richmond business went into receivership and closed the restaurant for several days. But the doors are back open and Paul Kofoed, who owns the brand of all 12 Robbie’s throughout the South Island, says he is hoping for community support and a new owner. “Basically it’s been really tough economic times, especially to trade a hospitality business at the moment. When we first looked at that business on that site almost four years ago Richmond was looking at a big subdivision and things were going to happen and take off. But it’s been a really flat economy and it’s been really tough. “But we hope to sell the business, we’d love to get a new owner in there to take charge of the business and really get it going. I still believe it’s a good business on a good site, it just needs someone with some energy, passion and hospitality experience that can drive the business forward.” Nelson man Geoff Falloon is the receiver. Paul says the other Robbie’s restaurants have also been having a tough time but the rebuilding of Christchurch – where six of the restaurants are – has seen things pick up recently. He believes the same will happen for the Richmond branch. “From a group point of view, we still believe in the site and still believe in Richmond. We’d like to stay there.” Paul told Nelson Weekly he is unsure how long the business will be able to continue to trade in receivership.

Helping rebuild Chch Andrew Board With some Cantabrians still unable to live in their homes due to last year’s deadly earthquake, one local couple decided it was time to get stuck in and help. Retired Nelson couple Fred and Bev Greig heard that Habitat for Humanity had started a special outreach to Christchurch, aiming to fix 50 homes of residents who did not have insurance at the time of the earthquake. They spent a week in the damaged city, plastering and painting the flat of an 80 year old woman who has been living with her son since the quake damaged her property. They say the week was a fantastic opportunity to help and they encourage other Nelsonians to give it a go. “We felt we’d like to do something in Christchurch and didn’t know what and then we became aware that Habitat was working down
there so we decided to go and help,” says Fred. Habitat have the use of a church hall and have turned two adjacent church-owned houses into backpacker-style accommodation for workers from outside of Christchurch. It cost the Greig’s $150 each for the entire week, three meals a day included. However some workers stay in other accommodation and just come in for the day. Bev says you don’t have to be “at all” handy and they worked in a team of 10 people, coordinated by a foreman employed by Habitat for Humanity. “The organisers don’t want to ask Christchurch people to help because they feel they have enough on their hands. Because Christchurch people are suffering so much he thought it was good to ask people outside the area to help,” says Bev. So far the Christchurch Earthquake Repair Project has fixed 20 of the 50 houses. To find out more about how you can help visit www.habitat. org.nz or call 0800 44 22 48.

Gateway a giant leap to work
Nayland College student Sam Lovell had a fair idea what he wanted to do with his working life. With the help of Gateway he now has no doubt. Sam entered the Gateway programme at school last year and as a result started working for local sound Company Event Audio. Owners Andrew and Kath Shellock say they were able to give Sam some basic skills to be able to make it in the industry but soon enough they were taking him to festivals as technical crew around the South Island. Gateway is a programme run through secondary schools throughout Nelson which allows students to work in local businesses and get a taste of the industry they are one day hoping to work in. Sam says the opportunity has confirmed a love of sound engineering

your questions
Q: I feel pressured by the cost of my children’s birthday parties and the cost of presents my children take to other parties. I can’t afford to keep up with the other parents. Have you any suggestions? A: We can get caught up in a competitive spiral, to match other children’s parties’ and do better each year. Remember the party is for your child, not to impress other adults. You are the boss, so you can put a limit on cost and size of a party or presents. Here are some suggestions:

and he hopes to make a career out of it – and it’s off to a good start. Andrew says after the Gateway programme ended he offered Sam a casual job to work for the company on the summer festivals that they provide audio and crew for. “The Gateway programme gave us the opportunity to train Sam so when work came up we could offer it to him straight away.” Sam says he is also using the skills he’s picked up at the school, helping do the sound and lighting for productions and other shows. “It has been awesome to be doing big shows and festivals with some big local and international bands at the age of 17. I can’t thank Andrew and Kath enough for all the skills and knowledge they have passed on.”

Battle of the Bands drew a bigger than expected crowd to the Shark Club, with the event, now in its second year, quickly gaining popularity, say organisers. Eleven bands took to the stage with only 20 minutes each to impress the judges and audience, with Weathertop named overall winners, followed by Butterface. “The Meaning was really good, they got the People’s Choice award and they definitely deserved that, they got the dance floor pretty packed,” says organiser Rueben Dudley. The Meaning band members say it was a great opportunity to get themselves known. "We were all quite nervous before and in the build up, but once we started playing and the crowd was getting amongst it, we really didn't want to stop," says bass guitarist Ben Bradley.
THE MEANING: Leigh Hayes, James Trevurza, Ben Bradley, Anton Stechman and Brent Thomason. He says they've been asked to return to play at Shark Club, and other places have approached them to play gigs. "People know who we are now," says Ben. The event is a great way for local bands starting out to
make a name for themselves. “We’ve already offered a couple of bands that played regular nights at the club, so it definitely boosted them,” says Rueben. He says the majority of the bands have showed interest in returning to battle again.

Welcome to winter. I have just come in from a very wet dendron “Saxton Blush” and is special as it was given to and blustery walk with Cruze – not too cold yet but if we me to look after while my friend is overseas for several can believe the weather experts that is to come. I do love years. It had not flowered and is very old and pot bound. this season though and feel compelled to light the fire, Her parting words were "don’t worry Rob – if you don’t make huge amounts of fresh winter vege and pumpkin want it , throw it out pot and all. I can’t get it to flower.” soup, and curl up with a good book feeling very satis- Because of the shape of the pot I cannot take it out to root fied that the freezer is stocked, the house is warm and we prune or change the soil so had to just cut it back and top are all set for whatever winter will throw at us. I have just up the mix and feed it and hope for the best. I used the heard from my sister in Christchurch that they are getting Seasol and Powerfeed combo as a foliar spray and also snow in Heathcote – she is going to start kept up the Thrive soluble plant food and making soup also. this is the result. I am sure she will be deOn to the garden, not a lot we can say in lighted. Vireyas are good to grow in pots this regard. Garlic of course is the last thing to “Saxton Blush” and “Saxton Glow” are exbe planted (on the shortest day according cellent pot specimens. to the experts) but you need not do too These rhododendrons are sub-tropical much deep digging for this. They are very long-lived and have beautiful autumn foliage and a smaller drooping habit making them ideal for smaller gardens.
Tips
Thisks wee
• Take pots and tubs out of their saucers at this time of year. Turn the saucer up side down or if you wish to, put a good layer of gravel in the saucer then place the plant pot on this so the roots are not left sitting with wet cold feet. We do not like this and neither do your plants! • Keep weeding and deadheading where needed. If the ground is very wet avoiding walking on it too much as the soil structure can be damaged by constant usage. • Did you know that when you plant garlic it is good to plant it with your roses? This has been done by organic gardeners for many years as the garlic repels aphids and is said to intensify the fragrance of roses. So no excuse now if your vege garden is full – you can still plant garlic! • Liquid fertiliser such as fish emulsion, or your preferred feed used as a foliar spray will encourage growth on veges and bedding plants and if Seasol is added that will also help strengthen the plants going into winter. • It is still not too late to plant bulbs – Tulips in pots can make a stunning display. • Time to plant christmas and asiatic lilies now as well, there are heaps to choose from and a pot of christmas lilies at that time of the year just can’t be beaten! • Never prune spring flowering shrubs and climbers in winter. Leave forsythia, weigela, philadelphus, spirea and montana clematis until after they have flowered in spring. • Apply lime now to hydrangeas that you want to keep red or pink. Keep warm and be happy, enjoy your winter gardening and I'll see you again in July,
Robyn

Local drivers rip it up at Spooners rally Kevin Knapp reigned supreme at the Spooners Bush Rd Gravel Hill Climb on Sunday, cruising to overall victory with three of the day’s four fastest times. Kevin, driving a Mitsubishi Evolution 6.5, had taken the lead after an impressive first run time of 2 minutes 14.240 seconds. But he didn’t just stop there and was faster in each of his runs. His best was 2 minutes 8.820 seconds. The race was initially planned for Slaters Rd on the Whangamoa, but was relocated to Spooners just days leading up the race. All drivers were given three attempts on the gravel course. The winner was the driver with the fastest time amongst the three. The race brought in 14 local entrants, all competing over four separate classes; Class
A 0-1400cc, Class B 14001800cc, Class C 1800cc and over, Class D 4WD. Class A driver Greg Teece was second on the overall standings; his best time was 2 minutes 13.26 seconds. Garry Adcock took out Class C in his BMW. His second run of 2 minutes 15.780 seconds was his best time of the day. Women topple Waimea The Stoke womens’ team faced old foe Waimea at Greenmeadows on Saturday, scoring a much-needed confidence boost over a side they will surely face at some stage in the playoffs, winning 32-17. The first half was a virtual stalemate, as the teams fought back and forth with neither making much headway until Waimea broke through at the 30-minute mark to score the game’s first try. Both teams must have had the hard word at the break from their respective coaches as the second half started at a frantic pace, each trying to gain the upper hand. It was Stoke which managed to control the majority of possession and territory,
then swinging it wide to its threatening backline. Moana Forbes proved elusive at centre, outplaying her opposite and scoring four tries in a stellar performance. Waimea weren’t done and managed to score twice more to remain within striking distance before Sallyanne Archibald put the icing on the cake for Stoke as she crossed in the corner with five minutes remaining on the clock. Jenna Eathorne contributed well with the boot, knocking over a crucial penalty and converting two of Forbes’ tries. It was fantastic to see (and hear) all the supporters cheering the team on, thanks for your encouragement - it made a huge difference.

While the Stoke division one side had a bye this week the club's division two and three teams were in action, both playing at Greenmeadows but both falling to close losses. The Stoke division three team, also known as the Reds continued its incredible run of losing every game this year by five points or less, going down to Tapawera 17-13. Stoke’s points came from a try to Kerry Neame, a conversion and two penalty goals to Patrick Whakatihi. Meanwhile the division two team faced the third placed Huia side. Stoke opened the scoring with a try to lock Rory Comer 10 minutes into the first half. The try came after some sustained pressure by the home pack then a 20 metre run to the try line from Rory in his first match back after a lengthy 12 weeks out with injury. The try was unconverted by first five eighth and captain Jacob Curtis. Huia scored the second try which was unconverted to tie the scores. Huia were reduced to 14 men with one of its midfielders in the sin bin. Stoke capitalised on the one man advantage with a try to lock Johnny Pike barging over from a maul two metres out from
the Huia line. The try was unconverted but the hosts took a 12-5 lead into the halftime break. Stoke scored first in the second half with a Jacob Curtis penalty but it struggled to maintain the momentum it had generated in the first half. Huia denied Stoke possession and had the majority of the territorial advantage throughout the second half. Poor defensive setup around the rucks and missed first up tackles cost Stoke dearly as Huia scored two more tries and a conversion to win the game 20-15. The loose forwards combined well with Number 8 Sam Dempster producing his usual strong all round performance. Openside Flanker Aaron Dempster was solid on attack and ever present on defence until leaving the field injured late in the second half. Blindside Flanker Daryl Jones provided the team with some good go forward and punishing defence. Right winger James Heraud was the pick of the Stoke backs. Heraud stopped many of Huia’s attacking movements with some powerful defence and was Stoke's most threatening back on attack. Replacement Hooker Max Glossop also featured prominently in the second half with a high defensive work rate.
