Government infrastructure spend to unlock more homes in Motueka
Critical infrastructure projects to kickstart new housing developments, and accelerate growth in Motueka, and across New Zealand has being made possible thanks to a massive $192 million Government investment, says Damien O’Connor, MP for West CoastTasman.
A new wastewater main, stormwater upgrades and a new roundabout in Motueka will be supported by $1.2 million from the Infrastructure Acceleration Fund, to enable a housing development on Maori-owned land.
The Tasman District Council expects this will accelerate the delivery of around 200 new homes, which could include affordable, public and papakainga housing.
“This is fantastic news for Motueka, and another great example of how local
and central government can deliver for our community and all New Zealanders,” says Rino Tirikatene MP for Te Tai Tonga.
West Coast / Tasman MP Damien O’Connor said this
was very good news for Tasman.
“This Government infrastructure funding will help our Tasman District Council and developers make sure critical infrastructure like pipes,
roads and wastewater connections, are in place, so that thousands more homes can be built and communities can thrive.
“The Government’s strong finances allow us to focus on invest-
ing in what matters most to New Zealanders: growing wages and cost of living support, hospitals, schools, housing, and addressing climate change,” says Damien O’Connor.

Three generations of the Knapp family working to repair Abel Tasman Coast Track for summer visitors
Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles and Kaiteriteri Kayaks
owner Keith Knapp has won the contact to repair a key section of the Abel Tasman Coast Track, playing his part to repair the treasured visitor attraction in time for what he hopes will be a busy summer season.
An engineer by trade, Keith Knapp and his wife Heather, celebrated 20 years in business as Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles just a few months prior to the first Covid lockdown.
“We had no idea what was ahead of us and other visitor sector businesses,” says Keith. “The past two years have been really tough. It’s truly wonderful to see overseas visitors, including international students, returning to our region and we’re ready to play our part to make sure the park and the coastal track is fully open and accessible for everyone.”
Significant damage was caused to the Abel Tasman Coast Track during the recent adverse weather event. The Department of Conservation has engaged Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles to use its two barges to transport the diggers and other equipment needed to repair the track into the park.
Keith and his team, consisting of his son Greg, grandson Jackson, and Dan Baigent will be work-
ing on the section of the track from Tonga Quarry to Onetahuti Beach. The team are also engaged to help install a new wastewater dispersal system at Bark Bay.
“We like to think we’re taking care of nitty gritty side of things and helping support the viability of all the operators who utilise the park.”
It’s not the first time Keith and Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles has come to the aid of the wider community when weather has affected key infrastructure. In the aftermath of Cyclone
Gita Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles barged goods and vehicles to and from Golden Bay while the access road to Nelson was closed.
“Community is everything for me,” says Keith. “When things need doing we turn up and get stuck in and do what we can to help.”
Keith and Heather’s ethos has led to their
business donating more than half a million dollars over the past ten years in services and cash in support of school groups and volunteers visiting the Abel Tasman National Park and in support of organisations and groups that are working to restore native bird life and native flora, such as Project Janszoon and
The Birdsong Trust.
“Our grandson Jackson is the third generation of our family to be a licensed skipper working in our business,” says Keith. “We’re focused on making sure his generation and the generations that follow can enjoy this beautiful place just as we are doing today.”
With key pieces of
plant having been transported into the National Park this week, the team is now hard at work.
“We’re working as hard and as quickly as we can to get the work done safely and thoroughly,” says Keith. “It’s a beautiful place to work and we want everyone to enjoy this place and everything it has to offer.”

Dynamic musical piano duo fill The Chanel Arts centre
Motueka Music Group, in partnership with Chamber Music
New Zealand, presented a concert by Duo Enharmonics on Sunday, 9 October.
It was an evening of exhilarating international piano music ranging from traditional classical composers, such as Mozart, Mendelssohn and neo-classical style Stravinsky to works by modern classical composers, New Zealand’s John Psathas, Fazil Say from Turkey and Hanna Kulenty of Poland.
Nicole Chao and Beth Chen performed with incredible technical style and emotional depth, evident through all the pieces.
Their elegant style, professional mastery and power was especially felt through the Stravinky’s Rite of Spring, a highly percussive piece.
The challenging repertoire was selected to illustrate the range of expression of the instrument and the gymnastic precision of a performance with four hands.
The duo also inter-
acted with the audience by introducing each piece of music

The Marahau pledge – a commitment to the environment
A group of Te Tauihu-based tourism operators are making a ground-breaking commitment to regenerative tourism. Every tourism operator based out of Marahau, from water taxis and kayaking to canyoning and walking guides, have come together under a new initiative called the Marahau Pledge, launched on Thursday, 13 October.
The Abel Tasman National Park is New Zealand’s smallest and most popular national park. Many people’s journeys into the Park start from Marahau, a small coastal settlement.
Developed in partnership with the Nelson Regional Development Agency (NRDA), the Marahau Pledge is an active commitment from the local tourism operators to care for the environment. For visitors leaving from Marahau it means they will have a zero carbon experience regardless of which Marahau operator they choose. A portion of every ticketed experience will go to projects focused on improved biodiversity and conservation outcomes for Marahau Village and the surrounding area. Additionally all the businesses signed up to the pledge will share knowledge that will improve the sustainability of tourism operations.
“Our region is famous for its beautiful environment, and people from all around Aotearoa and the world come here to find a connection with nature. As people who live, work and play here, we have a collective responsibility to care for and respect
the environment,” says Johny O’Donnell, spokesperson for the project. “Every visitor is valuable to our local economy, and we need to ensure that we get the balance right. We need to work together on ways to adapt to and mitigate climate change. The businesses taking the Marahau Pledge are showing the way. It’s transformational.”
Fiona Wilson, NDRA Chief Executive says that sustainability is an important consideration for many visitors. “People are really keen to travel again but there has been a fundamental shift in awareness about the impacts of tourism on local communities and the environment. PostCovid it’s definitely not back to business as usual for the visitor sector, we all know that there have to be changes,” says Fiona.
“A key focus for our Destination Management Plan is to encourage visitors to care more and do more for our region while they are here. We know there is a growing demand for light footprint travel and last year launched New Zealand’s first Zero Carbon Itinerary to demonstrate how
Your Next Milestone
easy it is for visitors to travel more consciously in Nelson Tasman.
The Marahau Pledge is another way to give visitors confidence that their experience isn’t going to have a net negative impact on the environment.
The tourism operators based in Marahau, along with a number of other businesses in Nelson Tasman, are leading the way in this sector to demonstrate their commitment, not only to the Park, but to the surrounding area. They love and care about Marahau, and they want to do more than protect it, they want to enhance it.”
“Marahau really is a village. There are a small number of us who live here, but thousands of people visit, particularly on their way to experience the Abel Tasman,” says Renee Thomas, (Ngati Rarua) kaitiaki of Wakatu Incorporation’s whenua at Marahau. “The Marahau Pledge is a recognition that large numbers of visitors do have an impact on the environment, and that the visitor sector is taking responsibility to make a practical contribution to the long-term wellbeing of te taiao in Marahau.”

Road closure for State Highway 6 for emergency repairs from Nov 1
Waka Kotahi - NZ Transport Agency will close State Highway 6 (SH6) between Hira and Ronga Road near Rai Valley from Tuesday, 1 November to Sunday, 18 December, to make emergency repairs.
People will be able to travel between Blenheim and Nelson by using State Highway 63 (SH63) through to Kawatiri junction, then SH6.
Andrew James, System Manager Top of the South, says after the recent weather event in August, Waka Kotahi opened SH6 quickly to help keep people moving, while more permanent fixes were being completed on SH63.
“Now that we have completed the repairs on State Highway 63, we need to get back onto State Highway 6 to fix five substantially damaged sites where there have been underslips. Three of these will require us to significantly cut back the road before it can be built back up again.”
“To keep everyone safe and finish
the work as quickly as possible, we must close the road for seven weeks. We realise this is a substantial amount of time, but the route is currently vulnerable, and another serious weather event could seriously damage it and see it closed for months. We must get this work done as quickly as possible.”
Andrew says contractors will work as quickly as possible to get these sites repaired, and ongoing work will be needed after the closure ends.
“When State Highway 6 reopens on 18 December, we plan to have two traffic lanes re-established for the holiday season. We will need to return to complete further minor repairs in the next year, but we are not expecting to close the road for this work.”
Andrew warns complex structural projects like this face risks from unexpected geotechni-
cal factors and potential weather delays but promises all efforts will be made to meet deadlines.
Other planned maintenance work will be brought forward and completed during the closure. This includes pavement renewal and additional drainage work to improve network resilience, such as improving culvert inlets and outlets, increasing the size of some culverts, and strengthening drainage channels.
Andrew says Waka Kotahi understands the closure will cause inconvenience for people, particularly those living in or around the Rai Valley.
“This is the best option on the table, and we appreciate their patience while this crucial transport link is repaired. We are making every effort to get the route restored before the busy Christmas period.”

Dear Editor, Community Pool Fundraising
Congratulations to the Motueka Rotary Club for their first rate hosting of the recent Ambrose Golf Tournament. The club committed wholeheartedly to fundraising for our local Community Pool project and the huge range of donated prizes reflected just how hard the Rotary Club members had worked on the ground. It showed the great support from our local businesses for our long overdue pool. The local Lions Club have also being doing a magnificent job with their fundraising targeting a therapy pool as part of the pool complex.
We need to keep the wider community support rolling to really show the TDC just how determined Motueka is to get our pool over
the line. Mayor Tim King presented prizes and must have been impressed by this community showing.
A special thank you to the Motueka Golf Club for donating free use of the course for the Ambrose.
Motueka – we can do this and WE WILL!
Regards, Faith Jackson
Dear Editor,
The public is being made aware and advised of the dangers of plastic in our environment.
Why then are the distributors of our newspaper i.e. The Nelson Mail delivering them in plastic bags?
Surely there is a better product available. Possibly waterproof paper.

On the last week of Term 3, Parklands School held their annual production. Due to the pandemic, it’s been two years since they’ve put on one of their shows. Needless to say everyone involved worked incredibly hard and the resulting performances were nothing short of outstanding. This years show was called “The Amazing Adventures of the Super Stan” a side splitting comedy complete with colourful characters and a touch of lycra! Parklands School cares a great deal about our environment which is why costumes for their show were mostly made from recycled materials using everything from old sheets and curtains to plumbing supplies!

Organic Food delivery business growing too fast
Fresh2U is a local, organic food delivery service based between Lower Moutere and Ngatimoti. It has been run by Lucy Maxwell for the last 10 years during which time it has outgrown its premises twice.
After the lockdown of 2020, Fresh2U grew too large for the farm shed from which it was operating and moved to The Food Factory in Stoke. Now it’s time to move on from there so Fresh2U is looking for a new home.
Lucy says: “The space would only be needed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as the fresh, local produce is harvested on Monday and Tuesday. It is then delivered to the packing premises to be packed and delivered on Wednesday.”
Fresh2U is looking for a space approximately 100m3 with power and hand washing/toilet facilities, preferably free of insects and vermin. The ideal location would be a more central location
rather than rural as this makes it easier for growers, customers, drivers and couriers to collect and deliver.
Lucy started off as a customer of Fresh2U and when she was offered the opportunity to buy into the business she couldn’t say no: “Supporting

Upcoming education symposium aiming to inspire
An education symposium to be hosted by iwi in Whakatú this weekend is the first step in what is hoped is a new chapter in celebrating and promoting educational excellence for Maori.
‘Kia wetewetea, ko Mãui ahau!’ is the first symposium of its kind to be held in Te Tauihu (the top of the South Island).
Organised by Te Kãhui Mãtauranga o Te Tauihu o te Wakaa-Mãui, a collective of the eight iwi of Te Tauihu formed in 2019 to work alongside the education sector, it is aimed at teachers, whãnau and anyone with an interest in inspiring excellence for Mãori students and influencing change.
It’s also an opportunity for iwi to share their púrãkau, or tribal stories, with the launch of a new set of iwi resources to complement the new Aotearoa Histories in School curriculum.
Whakatú-based Vanya George (Ngãti Kuia, Rangitãne o Wairau, Ngãti Apa ki te Rã Tò, Te ãtiawa
o te Waka-a-Mãui, Ngãti Rãrua) is a trained teacher and Education Facilitator for Te Rúnanga o Ngãti Kuia. She also sits on Te Kãhui Mãtauranga on behalf of Ngãti Kuia.
“The symposium is one of the outcomes of work in six priority areas that Kãhui Mãtauranga agreed to early on. By hosting this, we hope to be able to not only give a platform to some of our own iwi education experts but also meet the needs of the sector –that’s something that comes up regularly and often.
“But at the heart of it, this is for whãnau as well. We want to give whãnau an opportunity to gain a voice when it comes to education and provide some practical solutions when it comes to advocating for whãnau in a school setting.”
The name bestowed on the symposium – Kia wetewetea, ko Mãui ahau! (Loosen me, for I am Mãui!) - is a learning in itself.
It invokes the obstacles Mãui, the clever and gifted demigod – who was also a bit of a trickster – faced, and eventually overcame.
“The name was born from a place where generalised education for our Mãori students has been a bit hard, eh, because some of those qualities that our tamariki inherently are born with are considered maybe a hindrance or an obstacle,” says Janis de Thierry (Rangitãne, Ngãti Koata, Ngãti Kuia, Ngãti Apa ki te Rã Tò, Ngãti Tama, Ngãti Toa Rangatira, Ngãti Rãrua, Te ãtiawa, Túhourangi Ngãti Wãhiao), from Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia Te Matangi in Richmond. de Thierry also sits on Te Kãhui Mãtauranga o Te Tauihu is co-chair of Te Rúnanga a Rangitãne o Wairau.
“Mãui was famous for being a curious person, he was born out of a struggle and through all his ups and downs, he managed to succeed.
At kòhanga, often some of the tamariki were quite full on and the nannies used to refer to them as Mãui; they got into things they shouldn’t, climbing up everywhere, and those aspects of pushing the boundaries were traits of Mãui, who was of course one of our túpuna. And so, we have ‘Kia wetewetea’, or loosen me, unbind me, stop restricting me, ‘Ko Mãui ahau’, I’m Mãui. It puts that focus back on to our own superheroes. The qualities of Mãui are those we hope our tamariki emulate – well the superhero qualities anyway,” she says with a grin. de Thierry says the symposium is open to anyone who is interested.
“This is about opening eyes, looking at education with a Mãori lens and not as an add on, not just for non-Mãori but for all. Let’s bring in our mãtanga (experts) who can speak about these subjects, about what they have learned, about rac -
ism is schools, and about how we can improve all those kinds of things.”
‘Kia wetewetea, ko
Mãui ahau!, on at the Trafalgar Centre in Whakatú on October 21, 2022, 8am to 3.30pm.
It is supported by Te Hurihanganui and tickets are free. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Vanya George, left, and Hayley Pemberton, are the iwi representatives for Ngãti Kuia and Ngãti Toa Rangatira on the Te Kãhui Mãtauranga education advisory group. Garden Trail 2022
29th - 30th October
Pippa and Pete in Lower Moutere kindly invited The Guardian to explore their incredible garden which is new to this year’s Garden Trail. It was an absolute pleasure to view their lush picturesque garden and learn more about the work they have done over the years to create such a magnificent sensory experience.
“12 years ago it was all overgrown, we left some of the larger trees and completely reestablished the entire garden,” explains Pippa, who was busy gardening when we arrived. It’s obvious both her and Pete thoroughly enjoy the stunning surroundings they have worked so hard to create.
Colourful bearded iris put on quite a show mingled with various shades of lush green plantings, whilst tall trees provide a backdrop against the blue sky on a stunning spring day. A resplendent flowering cherry tree catches the sunlight, its blooms dancing in the breeze.
Pippa and Pete’s garden is more than greenery and gorgeous blooms, you’ll also discover a variety of interesting garden art thoughtfully placed around their property, including Pete’s mum’s old bicycle.
Also of interest is a large pear, repurposed from the old mini-golf course, it’s an eye-catching piece shining with shades of browns and bronze at the end of a buxus-lined path.
A gentle stream meanders towards the rear of the property, and we cross over the sturdy bridge Pete recently replaced to discover a number of majestic black wood trees as well as a stunning young rhododendron in full bloom. Pete and Pippa spent two years clearing this part of their property.
“It was a jungle when we first brought this block, we spent two years clearing most of the trees, which we cut into firewood. The resulting firewood sales helped us to fund this part of the garden,” says Pete with a smile.
With gardens like this to admire and inspire us, it’s no wonder the annual Motueka Toy Library Garden Trail is one of our most popular local events. There are a number of new gardens to view this year, so do make the most of it. With the wonderful weather we’ve been having lately, it promises to be a very special weekend.

About the Motueka District Toy Library
Toy libraries actively promote play as being essential for optimal educational, physical, psychological, social and cultural development of a child. The Motueka District Toy Library was established many moons ago and has since provided an abundance of joy to many of the younger members in our community.
Our local toy library falls under the umbrella of The Toy Library Federation of NZ, which acts as a support network to new and existing not-for-profit toy libraries; offering information and support on all aspects of running a toy library, toy selection and the value of play.
Our local Toy Library offers a range of quality toys, puzzles, games, sports, musical and learning activities for members to hire for a set period of time. From kids’ costumes to birthday cake tins, it’s a valuable resource for families, grandparents and of course the younger members of the family. If you are interested in joining the Motueka District Toy Library then do go and see them, they really are one of Motueka’s most loved resources for young families.

After the chaos of the last three years in the world of weddings, its given reason for serious consideration when planning your wedding day and risks. Although it is unlikely that we will see the extent of the recent epidemic lock down again, which devastated so many couples’ celebration plans and pockets, it does clearly show us the extent of disruption that is possible, when things do not go to plan.

As a celebrant and event planner, I have seen a shift in priorities over the past three years. The pandemic first gave rise to a flurry of couples who didn’t want to risk having to wait any longer to get hitched, seriously and quickly downsize to the permitted number of guests allowed at the particular level we were at the time.
Once this whirlwind passed the inquiries slowed dramatically as the trend moved into the micro event mania, The most common inquiry now has levelled off to a couple-only celebration where I provide the witnesses.
Our region is perfect for small events such as these, with so many spectacular backdrops available to us, for example.
• and an easy plan B, conveniently all in one simple package and place. These can be in vineyards, beach front, in the valleys etc.
• walk to the river’s edge where your bridesmaids are fantails, dancing in your wake.
• view, this can be enjoyed as a full day out. Either on a private charter or public water taxi.
• an occasion, adding to your adrenalin.
• offer an astonishing backdrop in an ancient surrounding, bringing you into a new beginning.
Another popular option is to combine your elopement with your honeymoon, extending your time and relaxing on a ‘wedding-moon’ holiday.
The savings on the bigger wedding option you discarded can be invested into new experiences and fun while you further bond in wedlock.
Hidden Valley Farm
top of Takaka Hill and now offering basic elopement packages, with off grid self-catering on an open fire, except for on your wedding day and night when we spoil you all the way. The moon and sun rise, giving you a remarkable array of colour in the unpolluted light.
The farm is a retirement and rehabilitation haven for life-style animals that have outstayed their welcome or need a safe alternative for their future. This adds to the cuteness of the property as you are free to enjoy the 400 acres of farm and native forest. As I own this property, the planning will be easy and as simple or complicated as you want it to be. A helicopter can land and you can be whisked off to a multitude of locations in the Tasman region. -

NBS Motueka Golf Club news
Lovely weather, a course in excellent condition and a field of just under 100 golfers, the biggest field in a number of years for this event, competed over two days in the Super Liquor Pairs. This is a great event with a 4 Ball Best Ball played on the Saturday morning followed by a Foursomes in the afternoon. On Sunday players play a Nett round and then the scores are added to find the winners.
The Women’s event was extremely close with Jacquie Martin and Shirleen Miller
Motueka Bridge Club
winning by a solitary shot on 280.
Second were Sally Jones and Jenny Van Heerden on 281
Third Derren Hedges and Penny Vincent on 288
In the men’s event the pairing of Rob Guild and Nathan Binns triumphed with a score of 276.
Second Matt Watene and Wayne Barcas on 278
Third Paul Silke and James Sutherland on 280.
There were a phenomenal 34 twos over the weekend.
On Sunday the field also competes for the Spring Cup which is the lowest Nett round on the day.
Our President Pete Cederman blitzed the field with a Nett 66.
However this achievement was overshadowed by Wayne Barcas who scored a magnificent Hole in One on No 4, well done Wayne!
Not only does he win the bragging rights over his playing partners but also the prize for a Hole in One on No 4 sponsored by K Real Estate.
The Club is very appreciative of the
sponsorship and support of Super Liquor Motueka who have supported this tournament for many years.
The large field is a compliment to the popularity of this event.
On Tuesday the 18 hole ladies played the Nilson Trophy a 4 Ball Best Ball Event.
This was won by Jane Adams and Fiona McKenzie on 136
2nd Shirleen Miller and Jacquie Martin on 138 Closest to the Pin Alisom McMillan

The local bridge club was finally able to hold its annual teams event run over three consecutive Monday nights. The pandemic had prevented this event in 202021. Each team of four was a combination of senior and junior players. The competition followed a round robin draw with the last session culminating in a playoff for final placings.
After the first two nights, less than 1 point (0.38) separated the top two teams so much hinged on
the final night of competition. In the end, Janet Howell’s team had a great run on the last night and won convincingly.
Top 3 placings:
1st Janet Howell, Ruth Field, Ashley Mooney, Faith Jackson (91.46)
2nd Chris Sutton, Barry Simpson, Lorna Wilson, Ron Argue (66.90)
3rd Mary McCallum, Brian Field, Diana Furlong, Elizabeth Bartlett (61.54)

Five new and eight returning Councillors in Tasman
The votes are in and there are five new faces around the council table following the declaration of the final results of the 2022 Tasman District Council triennial elections.
Newcomers Jo Ellis, Glen Daikee, Dan Shallcrass, Mike Kininmonth and Brent Maru will join returning Councillors Chris Hill, Celia Butler, Stuart Bryant, Christeen Mackenzie, Trindi Walker, Barry Dowler, Kit Maling and Mark Greening in the Council Chambers, led by returning Mayor Tim King.
Returning Motueka Community Board member
David Armstrong along with Nick Hughes, Claire Hutt and Terina Graham have been elected to the Motueka Community Board.
Brent Maru also stood for the Motueka Community Board and was the highest polling candidate but the Local Electoral Act provides that if a person is declared to be elected as a member of the council, and that person is also declared to be elected as a member of a community board, they must be treated as having vacated office as a member of the community board.
There was no election for the Golden Bay Community Board with candidates Abbie Langford, Grant Knowles, Robert Hewison and Henry Dixon unopposed. Voter returns were down slightly this year compared with those of three years ago.
This election the voter return was 48.89% or 20,314 votes compared to 51.68% in 2019.
Seasons of soil sampling return
Our next round of soil mapping work is underway and with around 80,000 ha to map between now and June 2023, we certainly have a lot of ground to cover across the Tasman District.
It’s all worth the effort – the work we’re undertaking, and the information gained will be used to complement the national soil map of New Zealand. Recently, our field team has been out and about in Motueka and surrounding areas.
Soil mapping will then continue through spring, summer, autumn and winter as we plan to sample some of the soils at Wai-iti, Brightwater and Tapawera. If soils get a little dry in summer, we will take a breather while we wait for some rain.
We want to keep things sweet with property owners – if your land is of interest, you will be contacted by members of the field team in advance.
It’s also important to mention that soil mapping is a largely non-invasive procedure.
It differs from soil testing in that samples are not generally taken from the sites visited, but rather involves a visual assessment of the soil.
A soil auger (pictured) is our preferred tool of choice to drill a one-metre-deep hole into the ground and lay the soil material out in a half pipe to describe the colour, texture and other properties.
The hole will be backfilled after the visual examination. Often, a cut in the road or riverbank provides exactly what we need without having to make a hole.
More information can be found on our website, tasman.govt.nz, search ‘valuing our soils’.
Hear the call of nature – help us develop your Tasman Environment Plan
We are about to begin our next round of community engagement in developing a new environmental blueprint to shape the future of our District for generations to come.
We are in the process of replacing our current resource management plans with a single, modern version – Aorere ki uta, Aorere ki tai – Tasman Environment Plan (TEP).
Like the rest of New Zealand, Tasman has some big environmental challenges and must plan for future growth.
Despite the proposed reform of the Resource Management Act, the needs and challenges facing the people of Tasman remain the same. Through quality policies, we can build greater resilience in the face of a changing climate and natural hazards, turn around biodiversity loss, retain productive rural land, protect and restore waterways, and plan for sustainable development.
Over the coming years, we will be working closely with Tasman communities to ensure the new TEP provides necessary environmental protection, restoration and community resilience.
This includes quality and appropriate development of Tasman’s towns, local centres, rural areas, and coastal places, protecting and restoring our land and air, and applying a ki uta ki tai (from the mountains to the sea) approach to water management.
Our upcoming round of engagement will involve staff and councillors having conversations with you about Tasman’s issues and opportunities and getting your feedback on how we should address them through the TEP. What we learn will make a difference in how the TEP is shaped.
Numerous community events and consultation opportunities are planned between November and December 2022. These will be listed on our website and various other channels soon.

Abel Tasman Coastal…another Classic!
With Covid curtailing last year’s Abel Tasman Coastal Classic it was thought it was all go for Saturday, 8 October’s Event.
But along came August’s downpour leaving the track from Awaroa to Marahau impassable in many places, creating more than a headache for Nelson Events.
With the acceptance of DOC a new course was created, based from Anchorage with 20km to cover incorporating Pitt Head then to Falls River and return, all timed to coincide over the Torrent Bay Low Tide Track.
Despite losing a few competitors who only wanted to run the original journey a healthy 225 were rapt, thoroughly appreciating just to be able to take part after a disastrous couple of years for event organisers.
They all got more than an adequate taste of brilliant trail running territory coupled with commanding views and the “ankle biting” tide as they passed through Torrent Bay.
Winner , Flavio Vianna made it a special day as he along with a couple of fellow kayakers decided to paddle to Anchorage before race start, then to complete their athletic day by getting back in their boats to head home for prizegiving.
He was just under two minutes ahead of fellow Cantabrian Vajin Armstrong, despite closing the gap around the final Pitt Head Loop. Nelson’s Mick Keating completed the top three.
It was all Canterbury gaining honours in the well-supported women’s field with Annabelle Bramwell comfortably ahead of Nikki Hill and Rebecca Kingsford, who had a 40 second margin separating them for second and third.
Nelson Events now take a break, returning on April 1 for another Alpine Lodge Loop the Lake which opens for Entry on November 1 for what will undoubtedly be another sell out.
