Nelson to get a new mayor SARA HOLLYMAN Nelson will have a new mayor come October as Rachel Reese announces she will not seek reelection and her deputy, Judene Edgar, confirms she will not seek it either. However, it will be a contested bid with an ex-councillor throwing his hat in the ring alongside Nelson’s youngest councillor, Rohan O’Neill-Stevens, who announced his intention to run for the mayoralty last month. Rachel Reese announced on Monday that she will not stand for mayor in the upcoming local body elections. Her deputy mayor, Judene Edgar, says she has also ruled out standing for the top job after one term as deputy mayor, following three terms as a Tasman District councillor. But ex-Nelson City councillor Kerry Neal says he will, more than 30 years after he last sat on council. Kerry, speaking exclusively to the Nelson Weekly, says his campaign for the mayoralty will be a “three-pronged attack” on the performance of the current
mayor and councillors. He says this coming election will likely be the “last opportunity to return local government to local people” after what he describes as a council that is close to being controlled by “bureaucrats, political party operatives and paid appointees”. Kerry says he wants to encourage fair-minded, experienced, practical people to put their names forward for council. “Get involved and fight to defend the right to have your say on who should run your community.” Rachel, who has spent three terms as the city’s mayor – a nine-year stint at the head of the Nelson City Council – says her 15 years as an elected member has “raced by” with plenty of variety, excitement, and challenges to be met. “When I came into the role there was quite a lot to catch up on, there was a lot of infrastructure to be upgraded and we’ve worked really hard to do that.” She says although the ‘to-do list’ is never finished, it’s the right time for her to end her role as

Stoke man buzzing for buses KATE RUSSELL Richard “Skip” Berry has always loved buses. In fact, he is so fascinated with them that he has more than 500 of them in his Nelson garage - his own personal bus museum.
“Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loved buses. There’s just something about them. I like double-deckers, I like the shape of them.” Over the past 40 years, model buses, signs, uniforms, and even London bus replica transfers have found their way into a now
very jam-packed room in Richard’s garage. “I’ll always find the space to add more though,” he says. The enthusiast for all things busrelated started collecting models

the city’s mayor. “I feel good about the decision but it’s never an easy one.” Speaking of her future, Rachel says she plans to take a break until the new year but says rumours of her standing at the next election for the National party are a “definite no”. “I’ve always laughed when I’ve heard that rumour. I ruled out a long time ago ever serving in the government of the day or Parliament, so the answer is a definite no to that.” Rachel wants to acknowledge support from family and friends saying the community has “a lot of kindness in it”, even from strangers. “This is a very kind community, there are people that will drop of flowers randomly for me and

There’s plenty of work with the marina and Haven precinct so there’s no shortage of things to get done.” She encourages anyone who thinks they have something to offer the community to consider putting their name forward for the elections on October 8, even if they have no experience. “I’ve worked with mayors across New Zealand, and I’ve seen mayors come in with no experience in local government and they’ve been exceptional.”

Nelson prisoners driven out by mouldy police cells face long road trips TRACY NEAL Open Justice Reporter
There’s good news for people arrested in Nelson - you won’t be spending a night or two in the cells there. The bad news is you might find yourself being driven many miles away instead. The cell block, which holds overnight arrests and remand prisoners at the Tasman Police District Headquarters, is closed - for the time being at least. Prisoners are now being driven to other police centres within the vast police district which covers about a third of the South Island. Open Justice reported in March that some of the 16 custody cells at the Nelson Police Station had been closed while a solution was sought to fix harmfully high levels of mould, after heavy rain had leaked into the building’s roof cavity. Air quality testing revealed higher spore counts than acceptable indoor level guidelines, which was a problem for those detained and staff working in these areas. New Zealand Police Association president Chris Cahill said the problem was already

The entire cell block was now closed, along with offices within the building which housed the district’s main police station. Acting area commander Senior Sergeant Martin Tunley told Open Justice the problem was limited to the cell block and a few other smaller areas within the building, but as a precaution several offices had now also been closed. “Any risk to staff has been mitigated by temporarily closing or limiting access to parts of the building while we treat and await test results,” Martin says. He said driving detainees outside Nelson to other areas was
a logistical challenge at times, but the safety of staff and those in their care was paramount. The Police Complaints Authority, which monitored places of police detention to ensure human rights standards were being met, was aware of the issues with the custody unit in Nelson. The Tasman Police District covers a 70,000 square kilometre territory, across the top of the South Island to Kaikoura and down the West Coast of the South Island to Haast.

FROM PAGE 1 in earnest in 1979. “I saw some for sale and haven’t looked back. My first one was a Corgi Routemaster and it just grew from there.” Richard also collected them as a child growing up in England, but they didn’t make the trip to New Zealand in 1967 when he moved here at age 15. “I grew up in St Albans, about 20 miles north of London. We never had a car, so we always used to go on the bus everywhere, and where I lived there was quite a good bus carriage,” he says. Richard says he has found a lot of his collection online, and he has also been gifted a bunch of Newmans Coach Lines memorabilia. “The internet then made things easier, I’ve got a lot of stuff from England as well as Trade Me and model bus pages on Facebook. “I hate to think what it would all be worth, each model would average between $40 and $50, but some are around $100 now.” Richard is now retired from his main job as an auto-electrician but has also been a part-time bus driver for a number of years. He is now a school bus driver and does a run in Lee Valley and Wairoa Gorge. Richard says he hopes to keep growing his collection, even if is just for himself, his friends, and his family. Even his wife is on board. “We’ve been married for 41 years, so she is used to it now.”

Currently, there are 81 Nelson businesses for sale on Trade Me with cafes, restaurants and bars, along with motels, leading with the most listings. If food is your thing, there are options aplenty. Halifax Cafe is looking for a new owner, as is The Kitchen, PC Eatery, and Robert Harris. The Workshop, and The Sands Brewery Bar and Kitchen are also listed for sale. Until last week the iconic Mr Whippy ice cream truck was for sale, with the owners moving on after 17 years. The cake division of Chocolate Velvet, which has been around for 18 years, is also
up for grabs. There is an Indian restaurant, a Night ‘n Day store, and two fish and chip shops for sale, or you could snap up Stoke’s wholefood café and retail store, Everyday Goodness. If you are looking for something a bit different, there is
a workplace drug and alcohol testing opportunity, an early childhood centre, an iconic dairy, and a gourmet oyster mushroom farming business. There are several franchise opportunities too, including a courier and several lawn mowing franchises. There are eight motels for sale in Nelson, including the extensive Saxton Lodge in Stoke. Listed for $8,000,000, it is now under contract. Bayleys Nelson Real Estate agent Gill Ireland says interest in the motel sector is “very strong” and some of the buyers include people coming into the area who are looking to purchase a home and business in one. “People are all selling for different reasons but there has been strong inquiry,” she says.
Smouldering slash pile seen across Nelson MAX FRETHEY A fire north of Nelson was successfully contained by firefighters over the weekend and left in the care of the farmer who works the property. Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift supervisor Si-
mon Lyford confirmed that fire crews from Nelson and Hira were called out to tackle a smouldering slash pile in Glenduan along Wakapuaka Road/State Highway 6, just after midday on Saturday. The fire eventually grew into a blaze that affected an area of land about 50 by 50 metres
and two tankers had to be called in to provide a steady source of water for the firefighters. Smoke from the blaze could be seen across Nelson. Fire crews remained at the scene overnight but did managed to contain and dampen the fire.
The now-controlled fire was left with the farmer who works the property. The Nelson Weekly reached out to the farmer but he declined to comment. Simon says there’s no risk of the fire spreading and that the site would likely continue to smoke for three days.

Mayors agree shipping a top priority JENNY NICHOLSON The Top of the South mayors met with National’s spokesperson for transport Simeon Brown on Thursday to lay out the priorities for the region’s connectedness. Richmond, Nelson and Marlborough mayors all agree that the top transport priority is the Interisland Resilient Connection Project (iREX) They say transport linkage between the North and South Islands is critical to the whole Top of the South region. IREX includes the replacement of interisland ferries with larger vessels that will cope with more freight, along with infrastructure work on the Picton Port. Tasman mayor Tim King says there has been significant investment by the Government in rail, but as one of the few regions with no rail, Nelson Tasman is reliant on shipping and roads. “Shipping is our rail,” he says. “I couldn’t overemphasise the importance of shipping to our region both now and going forward. It is crucial to the region.” He highlighted the impor-

Tim says we are under-invested compared to what our community contributes. Tasman has about 1.1 per cent of the population of New Zealand but is receiving considerably less than one per cent of transport funding. “Our community deserves to see the projects funded,” he says. “They have paid road user charges and would like to see some of the money come back to the region.” Nelson mayor Rachel Reese
says our port is key. “It’s a strategic asset and a connection for our economy.” Collaboration between the mayors over the past few years has provided a stronger collective voice when seeking funding from the Government and Waka Kotahi. Other priority transport projects include the Nelson Future Access Project, the Nelson Tasman Public Transport improvements, The Berryfield/Lower Queen St Intersection Upgrade, and SH60 Richmond to Motueka which is planned for later in the decade.

Stormwater upgrade to partially close Waimea Road and Rutherford Street
Waimea Road and Rutherford Street will see partial closures during a tenmonth project to conduct a major upgrade to Nelson’s stormwater system. Work is scheduled to start midJuly and will see the installation of a 1.8m diameter concrete stormwater pipe capable of handling a 1-in-100year flood event. Nelson City Council is expecting disruption to traffic on Rutherford Street and Waimea Road throughout the project despite
a detour that will be in place during the road closures. The planned detour will go via Van Diemen Street while Waimea Road is closed. Council says it will work closely with all affected schools to ensure students can get to school safely.

New grants to fill hole in dental care JENNY NICHOLSON New changes to the way dental grants are paid out will help fill a gaping hole in how Kiwis on low incomes care for their teeth, a local dentist says. The changes, which come into effect in December, see dental grants for those on low incomes rise from $300 to $1000 a year. Local dentists say this change is significant beyond just better teeth and has overall health and social implications. Local dentist Ben Simmons, who is also the secretary of the local dental association, says dentistry is often seen as too expensive, and many avoid the dentist until they experience pain. “For those on low incomes this is even more stark,” Ben says. “For those accessing funding through WINZ there has only been $300 available, and it has been for emergency care only.” He says that patients with multiple dental needs have to space out the care of their teeth, sometimes over years, due to the WINZ limits. “$200 can be spent to fill and save a tooth one year or $250 to pull that some tooth two years later and the government is likely to end up paying regardless.” The increase in funding means many on low incomes will have the opportunity for early dental treatment. Dentist Andrew Meffan says sore teeth can have broad im-
plications such as indicators of social and domestic violence as well as general health problems. “Poor dental health is also a contributing factor to cardiac problems and diabetes,” Andrew says. He says the grant changes are a ‘big deal’ and the $1000 will cover a decent amount of dental care. It means the money can now be spread throughout a year and doesn’t have to be accessed in one lump sum. While previously people could only apply for the grant once a year, they can now apply on an as-needed basis. Up till now, grants have been limited to infection and pain but that will no longer be the case with the changes. Grants can now include more proactive dental care, meaning necessary dental work can be done early. This reduces the incidence of people living for years with tooth pain and the need for extractions. Some local dentists have been providing ‘a bit extra’ for lowincome patients. They say being able to book these patients in for longer sessions to treat more issues will enable dentists to fit even more value into treatment plans. “This new policy will finally allow our dentists to help many of the most vulnerable people in our communities,” Ben says.

Fishing industry grapples with fuel prices MAX FRETHEY The consumer might soon have to pay even more for seafood as the fishing industry grapples with the high price of fuel in an ever-growing cost-of-living crisis. “It’s becoming more and more of an issue,” says the Motueka-based head of the New Zealand Federation of Commercial Fishermen, Doug Saunders-Loder. The Government has extended the 25-cent reduction in the petrol excise duty for two months in the 2022 Budget to make commuting less expensive for drivers. However, no similar measures have been proposed, or even mentioned, for the diesel used by many in primary industries. “Fuel costs in a primary production environment are a necessary cost,” Doug says. “It simply can’t be distributed elsewhere.” The federation represents about
300 small to medium operators of which about 30 are in the Nelson Tasman region. “You just can’t run economically on the level they are,” Doug says. “It’s gotten to the stage where they’re running up to 70 per cent of their income to cover the cost of fuel.” While none of the federation’s local members stopped fishing due to rising fuel costs, Doug says it’s something that many are considering while some have taken other measures to deal with increased expenses. “They’re scaling their businesses back. Some of them have had two to three crew and they’re dropping crew to accommodate the cost of fuel.” Doug also says the price of seafood could rise to help fishers cover their expenses at a time when prices are already climbing as part of the cost-of-living crisis.
“I think it becomes inevitable, sadly. It can’t just come from the producer.” Doug says that the pandemic has been difficult for the fishing industry and, while it did a relatively good job at keeping its head above water, the rising cost of fuel is the latest in a string of hurdles for the sector. “This is just like another nail in the coffin.” And large operators aren’t immune either with Sealord saying the cost of fuel was a worry for them. “We’re concerned about the high cost of fuel and analysing operational costs for all our vessels. “If fuel costs don’t fall anytime soon, we may not be able to run some of our vessels at certain times,” chief executive Doug Paulin says. “We are certainly keeping a close eye on developments.”

Feral cats killed to protect native species JENNY NICHOLSON Feral cats are being caught and killed to protect native species in the Nelson Lake region. The Department of Conservation (DOC), in partnership with Friends of Rotoiti and the Kea Conservation Trust, have installed traps in both the St Arnaud village and the Nelson Lakes National Park. Wild cats are an ongoing problem and DOC biodiversity ranger Emma McCool says even a small number of cats are potentially devastating as they take on bigger prey than ferrets and stoats. “While stoats and ferrets cannot take out an adult kea, cats can,” she says. “To lose an adult kea would be a really big blow for Lake Rotoiti. They are just hanging on here.” Emma says one cat can do significant damage. “In Otago they found an insane number of geckos in the digestive system of a feral cat.
Emma McCool with a trap that helps catch feral cats in the Nelson Lakes region. Photo: Supplied. It was mind-blowing. There were about 40 or 50 there.” Cats have been seen near kea and kiwi nests at the lake and have got as close as 500 metres from one nest. They have been
seen on walking tracks and as high as 1800 metres on the Perry Saddle. Emma says they are fearful of humans and won’t linger where people are. The Nelson Miyazu Sister City Association is hosting a display to celebrate 45 years of the shared project, after celebrations were put on hold last year due to Covid-19. Housing update Good news for first home buyers in Nelson! As part of Budget 2022 we’ve lifted the price caps for first home buyers so they can access Government grants to purchase their first home. First home buyers will be able to purchase an existing home up to a price of $650,000 and build a new home up to a price of $875,000. Many of you have asked for this and I’m pleased we’ve been able to respond to support more people into their first home. Nelson-Tasman is one of six regions that has been chosen for a new Affordable Housing Fund. Our region is eligible to apply for funding from a new $50m Affordable Housing Fund announced in Budget 2022. Alongside the work Kainga Ora are doing to increase state houses in Nelson, these homes will make a real difference for people in Nelson. Last week I spent time visiting community housing providers, building companies and supporting first home buyers access their grants. We know there’s more to do to fix our housing crisis, and the Government will continue to take action to make home ownership a reality for more Kiwis.

Nelson to host its first Pakistani celebration
...End of Story Final facts on some of our stories
KATE RUSSELL When Sanam Mukhtar and her family first arrived in Nelson from Pakistan eight years ago they knew only one other person from their country who lived here. Now there are multiple Pakistani families in the region, so Sanam has decided to organise a celebration to bring them all together. It will be the first of its kind to be held in Nelson. “We have never had enough people to hold a celebration, but now there are eight Pakistani families in Nelson which means we can,” she says. As the Nelson head of the Pakistan Association of New Zealand (PANZ), Sanam is planning the invitation-only event, which will be held at the Pūtangitangi Greenmeadows Centre this weekend. Sanam says it’s important for her to connect with other Pakistani families and raise awareness of their culture.
Exploring the ‘f words’ 18 May, 2022 Christopher Vine’s talk on ‘Fakes, Frauds and Fallacies’ for the Nelson Institute was a sold-out success, according to member Nigel Costley. The talk was held at the Elma Turner Library on 22 May. “We had a terrific turn out, having to turn people away,” he says. “The room reached its maximum of 50, a rare occurrence for us.” Nigel adds there is a good chance, given the numbers that were turned away, that they will run Christopher’s talk again.
Third time lucky for Freaky Friday 4 May, 2022
Sanam Mukhtar is organising Nelson’s very first Pakistani celebration this weekend. Photo: Kate Russell. “There are no Pakistani restaurants in Nelson and if you go to the market, you won’t find any Pakistani food. We have so many cultures in Pakistan, all provinces have their own food and language. There are more than 70 languages in Pakistan and people from all religions.” Sanam is from Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan. “I came here in 2014
with my family for security and good life quality. New Zealand is peaceful, and people are really welcoming and accepting.” The mother of three has been planning the celebration for a few months after PANZ approached her to organise it. “We will play some videos, introduce our culture, and there will be speeches. There are so many unique things
about Pakistan,” she says. Up to 70 people will be in attendance, including Nelson’s mayor, MP, and some city councillors. “It’s a chance for the community to get together and create awareness of Pakistani culture. We want to unite to celebrate our culture. “We have plans to make it bigger and invite the public, but this time it’s about bringing everyone together.”
Country Players were once again plagued with Covid-19 postponements during their May run of their show, Freaky Friday. They were able to stage the first three shows, but the rest had to be postponed due to 12 cast members getting Covid-19. Production manager Amby Cowe says, due to the main character being one of the cases, they had no option but to delay the remaining shows until Queen’s Birthday weekend. This is the fourth postponement for the show.
Bouldering gym opens in heart of Nelson 20 April, 2022 After a successful opening in April, Nelson’s new bouldering gym, The Gravity Well, installed New Zealand’s first-ever kilter board last month. The 12ft-by-12ft frame is controlled by an app and can move from vertical to 70 degrees. Owner Tamara Cartwright says things have been busy since they opened. “We are doing well, people are loving the space and the kilter board has been a huge hit.”

Home Grown Heroes nominations open

Cancer battle prompts fundraiser A nine-year-old boy is using his battle with cancer to help others in the region, raising $3000 from a fundraising event. Ashton Harris-Russell was diagnosed with stage three nonHodgkin’s lymphoma in August 2021 but after a long battle is now in remission. The rugby-mad Ashton dreams of being an All Black one day, and his family wanted to do something to give back to the charity that provided so much support through their journey so the Harris Hilltop Challenge was born. The event, organised by The Summer House and Athlet-
ics Nelson and held on May 8, Mother’s Day, saw participants pay $20 to run either the 10km or 7km course over the Harris’ private hilltop farm, which offers spectacular views of Nelson and the ranges. Now, $3000 of proceeds has been handed to the Child Cancer Foundation from the event. Daniel Falcone, Child Cancer Foundation’s South Island business development manager, gratefully accepted the donation from Athletics Nelson and The Summer House last week. Ashton’s mum, Rachel Harris, says they could not have got through the tough time without
the support they received while in Christchurch from family friends, the Child Cancer Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, and the Children’s Haematology Oncology Centre (CHOC) at Christchurch Hospital. She says the community has once again stepped up with support. The Summer House hosted the prizegiving and after function, with refreshments, live music, and catering from the Lone Star, with Gavin from Liquorland New Street providing a chiller trailer free of charge for the event.
Do you know someone who gives up their free time to help provide sport and recreation in the region or maybe you think you took the best photo in the last year of sport and recreation? Entries and nominations are now open for Sport Tasman’s 2022 ASB Home Grown Heroes awards. The categories are the Good Sorts Award, the Time To Shine award, the Best virtual sporting moment and the Mana award. Sport Tasman sports development lead Ryan Edwards says the awards are an opportunity to celebrate those people who don’t traditionally receive thanks for their hard work. “With our ‘good sorts’ award, there’s so many people who give up so much of their time and apart from an odd ‘thank you’ don’t get recognition. “You roll around in various sports circles and you hear about these amazing people who never get recognised.” He says the awards are also a chance for everyone in the community to say thank you to those who put in a giving hand. “Your basketballs, rugby, football, basketball, they’re in the newspa-

per all the time and it’s those kinds of smaller sports that get the opportunity for people to be recognised.” Even if your nominee isn’t a winner, they will still receive an email from Sport Tasman acknowledging them for all the hard work they put in. The Top South Media Good Sorts Award is for someone who might have given up substantial time as a volunteer, made a significant impact on their club, community, organisation or school, or shown commitment to developing themselves or others. The award will have an over and under-24-yearold winner in each region. The Sport Tasman Time to Shine award is for someone who gets the people smiling with good times and an open-door attitude to everyone. TEMPORARY POWER INTERRUPTION FOR GOLDEN BAY SUNDAY 12 JUNE 2022, 9:00AM – 3:00PM Network Tasman needs to undertake essential planned work at our substation in Motupipi. Most of the electricity distributed in Golden Bay goes through this substation and the work is required to ensure a reliable power supply to the area. Unfortunately, the work cannot be undertaken while the substation is in service. MINIMISING DISRUPTION
Puponga
To minimise disruption Network Tasman will install a portable generator to keep the power supply on in selected areas. The generator will supply: Commercial Street Takaka excluding #1, 3, 194 & 199 - 203: side streets off Commercial Street between and including Junction Street to Feary Crescent; areas West of Takaka; Upper Takaka and the Takaka Valley through to but not including Central Takaka Road and East Takaka Road.

Customers in the generator supply areas will experience a brief outage when the generator is disconnected in evening.
Takaka
The generator is able to supply an area fed by a high voltage feeder line/cable. We have chosen these areas to maximise the benefit of the generator and keep supply on to as many customers as possible while avoiding areas where maintenance work will be undertaken. If we need to postpone the shutdown due to weather or a network emergency, the alternate date is Sunday 19 June. Network Tasman will also carry out localised maintenance on the distribution network while the substation is out of service.

Network Tasman acknowledges the disruption this outage will cause and regrets the impact on residents, businesses and visitors. If you have questions or concerns please phone Network Tasman on 0800 508 098.
PREPARING FOR THE OUTAGE 1. If a member of your household is medically dependent on electricity, you should contact your medical provider for advice. 2. Store enough drinking water from wells before the power goes off. 3. If required, fill your car with petrol the night before. 4. Please turn off stoves and heaters, and all sensitive electronic equipment before the shutdown, and ensure that they remain turned off until the power is restored. 5. For your protection, treat all lines, electrical installations and wiring as live during the shutdown.

Opinion
Opinion Frankly the claim by NCC CEO Pat Dougherty to raise the new $40m library, if sea levels threaten it, not only beggars belief but is a nonsense. No wonder it will cost $40m if that is how the construction of the building is being designed and that I’m sure won’t be the final figure. With due respect there is no way CEO Dougherty can confidently claim the building will remain “high and dry for 100 years” No mortal soul can claim that. By now the Council must be well aware that the project’s cost and siting is strongly opposed by many Nelson citizens and it’s time for CEO Dougherty to stop stick-
ing his head in the sand and ignoring that huge discontent and go back to the drawing board. Failure to do that will have its consequences at the Local Body elections in October. Our current library refurbished to make it a modern Community Communication and Literary Resource Centre with all the latest technology on site for wide community use is what’s required. This is what has been happening overseas and in the UK over 600 libraries have either been closed or refurbished in this way. NCC should follow suit ... it’s a no brainer! Neville Male
URGENT NOTICE FOR ALL NELSON CITIZENS ARE YOU INTERESTED IN STANDING FOR COUNCIL? NELSON CITY COUNCIL HAS BECOME DYSFUNCTIONAL AND UNDEMOCRATIC - IT MUST BE REPLACED
Have your say: sara@topsouthmedia.co.nz facebook.com/nelsonweekly
Building higher is nothing new, nor is it a nonsense. Nelson, like the rest of New Zealand, has been taking into account sea-level rise through our Inundation Practice Note that sets the minimum floor levels for new buildings or major alterations for a number of years. You only have to look at where new homes are now sitting in our low lying areas such as The Wood to see this in practice. It’s pleasing to see Mr Male shares our vision for the library to become a community space, but it is worth noting that the current site of Elma Turner Library is actually 650mm lower than the proposed site for the new library. Either site would require an elevated floor level, and good planning for a facility that will serve the community for decades to come means its also prudent to consider options for raising the floor levels further should that be required. Overall, we estimate over 4000 properties worth over $5bn will be impacted by sealevel rise in the next
100 years. The owners of these properties deserve to have a say about how we respond to climate change and in June Council will start having conversations with our community about potential adaptation responses. Pat Dougherty, Chief Executive, Nelson City Council
Support workers: ‘we are not valued’ Yes these wonderful people should be paid a lot more than just above minimum wage. Shortage of workers is already happening. Going to get worse if something is not done soon. Grace Clark $21 an hour, insulting! I work in community mental health in Australia I’m on $40 per hour. Ross J Exton Some of you will have done courses that are arranged by the industry. You all work very hard and should be on at least $30 an hr. The rest home management think nothing of increasing the rates. They make heaps of money
and use you carers as cheap labour. They know how hard you work. The less they pay you the more profit they get. A lot of that goes out of NZ. Time for you to fight for a decent wage. And more staff. Bev Boucher I’m at the top at 27.43. And trust me it’s eroding Tammie Bunt Yes, it’s a problem. My mum is a support worker and loves the work and her clients but faces a unsustainable workload because the industry is understaffed due to poor wages which attracts less people. As a society we need to value our community members that need support, and we need to value the community members that provide the support. I would say at least $27-$30 per hour. If it’s not sorted the alternatives are for people to suffer alone at home and or NZ brings in plane loads of immigrants happy to work on close to minimum wage. Caleb Hill

Proudly supporting The Car Company Nelson. Congratulations on 26 years.
Advert
A stalwart in Nelson Tasman since 1996, established, locally owned vehicle dealership, The Car Company has been the go-to for many customers when purchasing a car. The longstanding and trusted team have earned the right to its success, building a solid reputation on not just offering value for money, a variety of vehicles and huge volume of stock, but also through referrals, recommendations and a long history of repeat business. Owners Ben Brownie and Shane Drummond have been main players in the industry for a combined total of over 50 years, and credit the company’s position of strength to building honest and trusted connections worldwide. “Building a strong rapport with our clients, no matter where in the world they are, is key. Our customers can trust us to back ourselves when we say we will deliver on something. We have clients that will call and purchase a car from us without even seeing it because they know we will do everything we can to get them exactly what they want.” Great camaraderie between the staff of over 20 employees is also key to the business’s success, says Ben. “Our team work hard and play hard. A lot of our staff have been with us for over ten years - we have had people like Chris McQuade work here for more than two decades - that says a lot about our workplace environment. We have the same rapport with our clients. People can trust us to be upfront, provide honest feedback and make decisions easily. They know we will see right by them, every time.” The Car Company’s foresight to adapt, often ahead of the game, has seen them in good stead over 1. 2. their 26 years. “Adaptability in changing times is definitely one of 1. A huge contributor to the region, The Car Company is a major sponsor of development sports including rugby, cricket, soccer, bowls and basketball, and are key advocates of Women’s and Children’s Refuge and Menz Shed, along with countless other community groups. “We are locally owned and locally operated, working with local people and making local decisions. OU NOWT The Barden Party gained popularity performing in gardens, castles, vineyards and festivals across the country this past summer. Photo: Steve Hussey.
Barden Party hosts final gala show before conquering US The Nelson-born Shakespearean smash-hit show of summer is throwing one final gala show at the Theatre Royal this month before heading away to conquer the United States. The Barden Party was born in Laura Irish’s Nelson backyard during the height of Covid restrictions. Laura, a lifelong Shakespeare buff, had an idea - The Bard (Shakespeare’s nickname) + a Garden Party was sure to be a good time for all and just what people needed in tough times. Thus, the Barden Party was created - a nimble and safe show that could be performed in any space it encounters. And what better way to do that than like travelling troubadours did hundreds of years ago? Laura and her musical director Jake Robinson, fresh from working on London’s celebrated West End, came up with the idea of fusing pop music into Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. “The result was just this pocket of fun and joy that people all around the country wanted to share with their friends from the comfort of their own homes,” Laura says. Just a few shows ballooned to more than 50 - firstly across the
Nelson/Tasman region and then across the whole of New Zealand - playing festivals, retirement parties, birthday celebrations and neighbourhood gatherings. They even won the top award at the Dunedin Fringe Festival. Now, in July 2022, the show is coming to cities across the United States. “The show is so adaptable we can literally perform in any space. We just turn up on the day and make the magic happen,” says Laura. But before that happens, they wanted audiences in Nelson/Tasman to have one final chance to see the show before it heads away. “We love the Theatre Royal - we thought what better way to bid farewell than having a show at the Grand Old Lady.” Laura is asking anyone locally who has contacts in the US who might like the idea of having a show performed in their own home, or hosting a Barden Party in a public venue. The Barden Party’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ - Red Carpet Gala is on 11 June. Tickets are $40 for adults, $30 for seniors, students and artists and groups of four can be booked for $125 from theatreroyal.co.nz or calling 03 548 3840.

Inspirational passion for her field A lust for life and a passion for perfection, Jess Wells owner of gib-stopping business No Stopping Jess, is an unstoppable inspiration in the industry. Fuelled by the support from those around her, Jess has been honing her skills in the gib-stopping profession since 2004, finally branching out on her own in 2010. After a brief hiatus, Jess is back in the game and credits her success with the unwavering loyalty of her clients and close friends in the industry. “I completed my apprenticeship with Bruce Wilson from Enterprise Painting and Decorating, he has been an awesome teacher and I am grateful for his guidance. Deb and the team at Trowel Trades in Richmond have also been fantastic, as have gib-stoppers Carl Monopoli and Andy Steveson, and local builders Rex Johns and Charlie Shannon. Without the support from all of these people, my clients, and others in the industry, I couldn’t do what I do.” Sporting a new logo and signage on her trade vehicle, Jess says the image of a hawk holding a trowel in its claws perfectly reflects her message. “I wanted to have something creative and significant. The logo is ideal as they are tools that I use every day in my work and the image can be interpreted in different ways.” Excited for what the future holds, Jess remains tightlipped, simply saying, “watch this space!”

Kay Peterson, Anja Milton and Kim Willis met as stallholders at the Richmond Baptist Church Boot Market, and Kay says, “We decided to get our own business together from there.” They branched out their own, creating a bi-monthly online market hosted via social media on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, and hosting a physical market inside the Richmond Baptist Church every third Saturday. “We have handmade original crafts, cards, gorgeous jewellery and driftwood art available, and everything in between,” says Anja. “Word is getting out about what we do, and it has been all go from there!” With regular marketers and many new crafters joining the contingent, the ladies are excited to see what the future holds. The online markets are hosted via their Facebook page with photos of the gorgeous crafts uploaded and customers can purchase directly from the warmth and comfort of their own home. “It really adds the personal touch,” says Kim. Local women supporting the local community Staying true to their ethos of supporting locals, trusted boutique fashion store Stacey Clothing hosted a successful Pink Ribbon fundraiser event for The Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, on May 26, donating every dollar raised to the important organisation. “It was an awesome night”, says owner Jackie Gibs-Beatson. “It is the first time we have hosted a ticketed event like this, and it went brilliantly, we had so much fun!” Decking the store with all things pink, two Stacey clothing $500 vouchers to be won, a raffle for an Augustine by Kelly Coe kimono and plenty of spot prizes on offer, Jackie says a fantastic night was had by all who attended. Charging well past their original fundraising goal, the team thanks everyone who supported the event and adds it is not too late to make a donation. “Supporting local is part of our philosophy, and Pink Ribbon is such an important cause.” A link is still available via the Stacey Clothing Facebook page and all proceeds go directly to The Breast Cancer foundation NZ. Age no barrier for paddler taking on the world JACK MALCOLM
Nelson man Greg Buck says although there were a few older paddlers when he started paddling Waka Ama in Nelson 10 years ago, there was no recognition or competitions for them in the South Island. Photo: Jack Malcolm.
Seventy-five year old Greg Buck is hard at work preparing for the Va’a World Waka Ama Sprint Championships in London this August. Since starting the sport in 2012, he’s raced in almost every event he could and has kept a record of almost every paddle he’s ever done. His log book spans over 45 pages of detailed notes on everything from the crew to the sea conditions. As a masters paddler based in Nelson, Greg has had to team up with a squad from Ratana Paa Kaihoe Trust from Whanganui to compete at the world champs. “For me, it’s not that different ... but for them, they’ve had to do what I did and come into a crew late,” he says. The long weekend sees a host of night games on Thursday and Friday, with Stoke at home to Renwick, Waimea Old Boys playing host to Marist, Wanderers play Kahurangi in Brightwater and Nelson host Central, while Waitohi have a bye.

You wouldn’t know who’s going to be good until you get there.” With training in the North Island once a month and international travel, Greg says it will cost thousands of dollars to compete. While he’s applied for funding, he says he expects to have to fund the trip himself and through fundraising. You can email him to organise a paddle, which he says would be perfect for a family or work-do, for a koha to his competition fund. Basketball: The Mike Pero Nelson Giants have a difficult road ahead of them with two games in three days after a tough defeat to Hawke’s Bay Hawks, 73-82, last weekend. They will be hoping for the return of their star player and the league’s top scorer, Trey Mourning, who was relegated to bed with sickness, for their upcoming Thursday match against the Southland Sharks before a rematch against the top-of-the-table Otago Nuggets on Saturday. Gymnastics: Young gymnast Lewis Karetai’s confidence is riding high after a recent

Having just returned from a torn pectoral muscle, he says it was a win he wasn’t expecting after making “a couple of mistakes” throughout his six apparatus. Bridge: Sheila Beggs from Nelson has become a grandmaster of bridge after combining with Wayne Smith from Westport to win the Marsden House Nelson Open Pairs bridge tournament held on Saturday. The pair averaged 61.61 percent over the two sessions of play to beat Phil Rutherford and Ray Curnow, from Westport, on 60.45, followed by Reg Nichol and Ed Roggeveen from the Marlborough club in third place on 58.05.

Dual captaincy and lofty goals for first 15 JACK MALCOLM
Nelesoni’s plans after school are to attend the University of Canterbury’s Nelson campus as a teaching student for primary school students, saying he wants to give back to the community. He wants to play for Nelson in the club competition and is hopeful he will make the Crusaders academy. Dane says he might go into a trade but isn’t sure which one yet. Coming from Motueka, he wants to play premier rugby for Kahurangi. “I just want to see where I can go (with rugby),” he says of his playing ambitions after leaving school. Both players credited their
Nelson College’s first 15 has two fresh-faced captains who believe they can go all the way in their 2022 campaign. Third-year player and midfielder Nelesoni Malaulau leads the team alongside number 8 Dane Leppin, who is 16 years old and in his first season at the highest schoolboy level. “Going back-to-back is our goal. It’s a big ask coming into this year trying to follow what last year’s team did,” says Nelesoni. “I think we can go all the way if we play as a team and execute what we train,” says Dane. The duo say it’s an exciting opportunity to be given a leadership position in the team, believing that their hard work had been recognised. For Nelesoni, he says being one of the experienced team members played a big factor, and he’s excited to see how he does in the role. While Dane says he had to prove himself to get the nod. The team’s first loss of the season was a real wake up call for some of the players, says Nelesoni. “We still have a lack of experience, but it comes from maturity. “It was a big trip down to Timaru and some boys thought it was more being there with their mates. We’ve got to do it like a job.”

Coastguard Nelson, hugely appreciated ANGELA GOVIER It’s a funny thing - Coastguard are the last people you ever want to need but tell you what, you’re really pleased to see them if you ever do need to make a call out. It’s a sentiment Coastguard Nelson hear a lot, “man are we glad to see you guys!” As a fishing club, choosing Coastguard Nelson as the recipient of our fundraising from the 2022 Snapper Cup fishing comp, was a bit of a no-brainer. While they get some government funding, this is not nearly enough to cover costs, so they rely hugely on fundraising to be able to continue doing the amazing work they do. Seems like nearly every week you read of an epic rescue being carried out in our region, and that’s
not to mention the smaller jobs they get called out to every day that don’t make the front page. As a boating family, we get a Coastguard membership every year. If you get in trouble at sea, no matter if it’s kitesurfing, kayaking or on a big launch, they’ll come help get you home. Even if you’re not a member! But when the annual membership fee is a fraction of the possible call-out fee (and you can use it as many times as you need) - joining Coastguard is also a no-brainer. It was with great pleasure that the Dawnbreakers Fishing Club was able to present this cheque to long time Coastguard volunteer Pete Kara and President Clive Paul. Keep up the great work Coastguard Nelson – we appreciate it!
The scenic Nelson Tasman Region is home to a wealth of working artists, offering a rich diversity of unique styles that Y attract C I Tvisitors to the area all year round. Many artists invite visitors into their home-based studios and welcome the opportunity to talk about their work.

family for their love of the game, with Dane saying he and his older brothers, who also played first 15 rugby, would “always” be out playing games in the yard. Nelesoni says his father Faleulu introduced him to the game. “Me and my brother looked in the newspaper and we saw a report about rugby. We asked him (dad) if I can play, and I fell in love with the sport.” After their win over Selwyn last weekend, Nelson College sit fourth on the table with 12 points, having played one less game than Christchurch Boys High (20), Shirley Boys High (16) and St Thomas of Canterbury (15).

Round two of the national Kate Sheppard Cup and Chatham Cup competitions see back-to-back games for local football fans this long weekend. Nelson Suburbs FC Women’s 1st XI play host to Christchurch’s Coastal Spirit at 11am on Monday at Saxton Field before FC Nelson and Nelson Suburbs kick off at 2pm, with the location not confirmed at the time this article went to print. After a 4-0 win in the first round for the Suburbs Women, they have a tough test ahead of them in Coastal Spirit, who started the competition with a 6-0 win over Universities. Coastal Spirit are traditionally one of the strongest teams in the Christchurch region and currently lead their women’s premier league with a 5-0 record. With Amelia Abbot and Anna McPhie back in Nelson Suburb’s ranks, they believe they have the firepower to challenge the best in the competition. They will also be bolstered by Football Fern Gabi Rennie, who currently resides in Nelson with
her partner and was eager to get out against her old counterparts, having grown up in Canterbury. It’s the best side the club has ever fielded, says co-coach Matt Watkinson. “We rate our chances.” After being unavailable with commitments to studying and playing at the University of Texas in Austin, Amelia did not play in the first round of the competition. She is a talented midfielder with experience above her years at just 20 years old. She made her Football Fern debut last year having previously played at U17 and U20 level for her country. Anna has played the last three seasons with the Austin Peay Governors in NCAA’s Division I Football Subdivision, the second-highest college league in the United States. Suburbs have been breezing through the local competition, with 28 goals for and 0 against after their first three matches of the Nelson Bays Football women’s first division. Matt says they are excited to face a higher level of competition and step up to that level. The Kate Sheppard and Chatham Cups are New Zealand’s premier knockout tournaments in women’s and men’s football.
