Richmond builder vanishes with couple’s savings Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A local couple who paid Richmond’s SmartWay Homes to build their dream property have been left thousands of dollars out of pocket after the company’s owner, Bernd Mager, disappeared halfway through the project. Chris and Mellinda Fitzgerald’s home is quarterfinished and they now live in a leaky caravan on site with their kids. “We’ve been stuck like this for two years,” says Chris. “The recent rain has been disastrous for us as everything leaks.” The couple have already shelled out $600,000 but only really have the bare bones of the build to show for it. “He’s left us in a real hole,” says Chris. “We just want to finish our house.” The couple approached SmartWay Homes, which specialises in container homes manufactured in China, in 2019. “We couldn’t afford a conventional home, so it was a great alternative,” says Chris. SmartWay quoted them $424,000 for the 10-container home, which was to be installed to code compliance standard. Yet the build was fraught with problems from the start, with

SmartWay sending non-consented plans to China to get the containers made. “We got the containers on site eventually, but they had none of the bracing or welds that were required,” says Chris. “Bernd got a guy to spot weld them, but he was uncertified so his work had to be fixed at a further cost of $50,000.” When transport prices increased during the project after Covid hit, the couple paid an extra $75,000 directly to the Chinese manufacturer because they didn’t want SmartWay to foot the bill. “We literally did him a favour,” says Chris. Two years into the project and with costs escalating, Chris called Bernd last month to discuss a plan of action only to find his cellphone had been disconnected. “His email is dead and his website has gone,” says Chris. “We don’t even know if he’s alive.” The scaffolding on their abandoned property was costing $1,000 a week, with the bill hitting almost $25,000 before it was taken down. They’ve also lost thousands on orders which were never placed. “We pre-paid the builder for the gib, ply, floor tiles, bathrooms, the kitchen, the doors, glass balustrades, the

Monday’s mental health challenge for school Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Issues created by students’ social media use over weekends are keeping staff busy on Mondays at Waimea Intermediate. “One of the biggest challenges in schools is students unsupervised social media use and how that impacts on friendship groups,” says Waimea Intermediate principal Justine McDonald. “We spend a lot of Monday, and even to Wednesday, sorting through social media issues from the weekend.” Justine says social media produces different dynamics from years gone by. While students may know their posts can be hurtful at times, the fact that they are not face to face means they don’t see reactions and the impact of their posts. This can mean they don’t go through

the emotions attached to their behaviour, leaving staff to process the issues with groups on a Monday, particularly after rainy weekends. While it may be only a small percentage of students affected, Justine says that some kids are swept up in it and it is contributing to self-harm. Another change she is seeing is students’ increased awareness of suicide. Justine says we just need to be careful how we talk about it around young people, saying, ‘What we focus on flourishes.’ We need to get young people into music and arts and sport. She says that in Nelson currently there can be a three month wait for a young person who has suicidal ideas to be seen by a mental health team. Meeting mental health needs of students isn’t a one size fits all, according to Justine. The

school has counsellors and social workers who work with students, and she sees a direct impact in these cases. They also have Snapshot workers, and 24/7 workers who are a friendly ear closer to the student’s age. Nelson Tasman Life Education Trust educator Ingrid Kemp has been at the school teaching concepts like empathy, decency, self control and identity in online behaviour. One thing she hopes they take away is ‘There are not two versions of you. There’s not an internet you and a real you. There’s just one real you. If you are not kind on the internet, you are not kind.’ Ingrid agrees that social media is a concern for schools in the region, as does principal of Saint Paul’s Catholic School Maureen Phillips, who says it is certainly increasing student vulnerability.

Nick’s highlights from 30 years in politics

The all New

Nick’s ‘absolute favourite moment’ in politics was opening the Kahurangi National Park. As he took a week off before starting his new job, he reflected on the highlights from his 30 years. The 1996 opening of the park was enhanced for him by tramping from Mount Arthur to the Cobb with then prime minister Jim Bolger. “We stayed at Balloon Hut and the sunrise from the hill and the views were stunning. I redid the trip at Easter and the special part was seeing the increase in bird life. In 1996, when we opened the park, it

was silent, but this year we could hardly hear ourselves talk with all the bird song,” says Nick. Minister of Conservation was his favourite portfolio, followed by education. He says he takes particular pride in decisions around the creation of both St Paul’s School and Garin College. Nick says the portfolios he had tended to be quite technical and had a heavy work-load. “I’m a nerd and a workhorse so I liked those portfolios,” he says. While he says politics is both invigorating and brutal, he did love his time as an MP, first for Tasman and then for Nelson. However, he says being a list MP wasn’t for him.

Having started as the baby of the house in 1990, he says he was the father of the house in 2021. 436 MPs passed through parliament during his years there. He took 50 bills to parliament and 45 acts were passed, he had 15 different portfolios and was responsible for 1326 cabinet papers. “It was a very intense 30 years,” he says. This week Nick started the next stage of his career, working for Smith Crane and Construction. With a background in engineering, his intention was always to return to it. “To be honest, I never expected when I started in politics in 1990 to survive for 30 years. It has been a privilege,” says Nick.

KFC planned for Richmond Jo Kent

The vacant spot outside Kmart in the Richmond Mall could soon be filled by fast-food giant KFC. Groundworks are currently underway at the site with diggers clearing out contaminated soil leftover from a former timber treatment facility. Tinline Properties Ltd, which owns Richmond Mall, has applied to the Tasman District Council for a land use consent to construct a KFC outlet at the location on 26-28 Talbot Street. That application outlines a proposal to build a KFC with a gross floor area of 250 square metres, 28 car parks and a drive-thru that goes behind the building with “queueing capacity for seven spaces”. Tahunanui is currently the closest KFC to Richmond and customers often face queues of over an hour during peak times as the demand for the fried chicken fare is so high. “I had to wait for an hour last Friday stuck in the drive-thru queue,” says Richmond mum-of-two Anna Rutherford. “I’ve heard rumours about KFC taking that spot for a while now, so if it actually happens it will be great.” Tinline chief executive Jamie Gaskell declined to comment further at this stage, while a KFC spokesman said negotiations were still under way.

Wakefield wants smaller homes Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A group of Wakefield residents are pushing for Tasman District Council to factor in the need for smaller homes in future housing development plans. A survey they carried out shows people want smaller properties built for the ageing community. “People want to downsize when they get to a certain age,” says Tony Aldridge, committee member for Homes for Wakefield. “They want to move to a one- or two-bedroom home, but there just isn’t anything for them and nothing is planned either.”

Homes for Wakefield presented their results to TDC, giving an insight on how the community would like their village developed in the future. “We did a leaflet drop to houses in Wakefield,” says Tony. “People want smaller homes, yet Wakefield housing developments have few, if any.” The council’s 2018 Wakefield Settlement Area Report states the proportion of over 65-year-olds will double in the next 20 years. The group hope that by showing the council what the community wants, then maybe future developments can be changed. “The people who live in Wakefield want to stay here in their retirement years,” says Tony. “They don’t want

to move away, so we need better options. There has to be savings to the council and developers in having more dwellings in one fixed area,” say Tony. “Fewer footpaths and less pipe infrastructure for starters. We need to make sure our voice is heard. Our survey showed a deep sense of community in the village.” Going forward, the group would like the council, developers and community to communicate with each other before any house development gets the go-ahead. “We encourage the council to reach out and engage with us,” says Tony. To find out how support the group, email homesforwakefield@gmail.com.

Richmond builder vanishes with couple’s savings

Jenny Nicholson jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Chris is $300k out of pocket and the costs are rising. Photo: Jo Kent.

The Tasman District Council (TDC) may need to revise its plans for resealing and renewing some local roads if the funding they applied for from Waka Kotahi is less than expected. According to TDC Community Relations Manager Chris Choat, the TDC sent in an application in November 2020, assuming Waka Kotahi would fund 51 per cent which is the agreed rate. The first the TDC heard that the figure asked for may not be supplied was on 31 May when Waka Kotahi indicated they would cap their investment at a lower rate. The decision had been expected in March. This will mean the council will be only able to reseal a shorter length of roads than initially planned over the next three years and will focus their work on roads with the most need. “Roads that are in OK condition may need to wait longer than first planned before

we are able to reseal them, which increases the risk that more expensive repairs will be needed in the future,” says TDC Community Relations Manager Chris Choat. According to Chris, the delay won’t only affect rural roads. He says often low trafficked urban streets have less wear and tear, such as little or no truck movement, which make them less vulnerable to the effects of reseal delays. The entire network of 1769 km of roading is monitored and the council will prioritise funding to where it is most needed. “Essentially we have received the same amount as the previous year, they have not provided the increase requested. It is important to note that the increase asked for was not solely related to increasing the length of resurfacing, but takes into account the increased costs of bitumen and traffic management costs,” says Chris. While Waka Kotahi notified the council of the indicative funding allocation in May, a final decision is expected in August 2021.

I managed to get hold of the manufacturer and was told nothing had ever been ordered, which means the builder has kept all that money.” Chris has since discovered that subcontractors have also been left unpaid by Bernd, so he’s having to pay those bills again depsite having already given the money to SmartWay. “Some of these bills are coming from local family businesses,” he says. “How can I not pay them? Invoices keep turning up for work that Bernd was supposed to have paid for. I don’t know what to tell them.” He estimates he’ll need a further $350,000 to get the house finished. “The costs are rising every day,” says Chris. “We are where we are. It’s winter again and we’re still living outside. My wife has had to move in with a neighbour because it’s so bad for her back to be out in the cold, sleeping on a hard bed. The book Sailing to the Far Horizon: The Restless Journey and Tragic Sinking of a Tall Ship featured her late son, Nigel. After Waimea Weekly ran the story last week, Adrienne Matthews came forward with a copy which she ordered from Amazon. “I read her story and knew the title of the book which Sheila couldn’t remember. I had a look online and found it, so I’m gifting it to her.” The story also caught they eye of Phillip Street who has given Sheila his author-signed copy of the book. 4 November 2020 ‘Railway bar robbery arrest’ The 34-year-old man who attempted to rob the Railway Restaurant and Bar in Richmond at gunpoint in October 2020 has been sentenced to three years and 10 months imprisonment. His actions were caught on CCTV footage when he pulled a balaclava over his head as he entered the bar. Licensee Travis Cooper had a gun pressed into the back of his neck during the attack and says he is relieved to have final closure. “People still ask me if he was ever caught,” says Travis. “The system is slow. He has been on remand since November.” Travis says he’s happy with the sentence and that the man had already been wanted by the police before he attempted to rob the Railway, even featuring on the TV show, Police Ten 7.

Big Brother programme fun for all Jenny Nicholson There’s one thing that Callum never wants to miss, spending time with his Big Brother mentor Bruce Thomas. While they have lots of fun fishing, cycling at the velodrome, and building and flying kites he also likes that he has time to talk with Bruce. Big Brother Big Sisters Nelson matches young people between 6 and 12 years of age with a mentor who has compatible interests. Bruce and Callum have been meeting each

week for fifteen months. “It’s a chance to act like an eight-year-old and be allowed to,” jokes Bruce. Big Brother Big Sister currently have 57 children waiting for a mentor, 47 of those are boys. “You don’t have to change your life to change theirs,” says programme director Chelsea Rowthan. “The friendship is the intervention.” She says that having a mentor ignites potential in the young people who are referred by parents for many reasons. They may

have faced adversity, be in a busy household but need a one-to-one mentor, struggle with friendships or not be in contact with one of their parents. Mentors are asked to commit to once-a-week interaction for at least a year, and they are supported by mentoring coordinators. Chelsea says, in surveys of mentors, 98-100 per cent say they would recommend mentoring to a friend. WEDNESDAY 23 June 2021

Vaccinations for the rest of Aotearoa New Zealand The COVID-19 vaccination rollout for the general population starts from the end of July. Our COVID-19 vaccination programme has built momentum steadily since February. We are vaccinating around 100,000 people a week at the moment. In the second half of the year we hit top speed and everyone in New Zealand aged 16 and over will be able to be vaccinated.

Moving to the general population So far, vaccinations have been made available to those most at risk of getting COVID-19 to limit the chances of it getting into the wider population. With more vaccine supply coming on, and having ramped up our infrastructure, vaccinations for everyone else in New Zealand aged 16 and over (the general population) start from 28 July. This is a very large group of people. To make this flow smoothly, we will break this down by age bands. All people aged 60 plus can book their vaccinations from 28 July. Then, two weeks later, people who are 55 plus. From there, new age bands will be opened up every 2–3 weeks based on confirmed deliveries of the vaccine and the speed of rollout to earlier groups. By mid to late August, invitations should be open for people over 45. By mid to late September, invitations should be open for those over 35, with everyone else being eligible from October.

Invitations Most people will get a direct invitation to book – either by email, text, phone call or in the post. You will then be able to book through Book My Vaccine, a new national booking system that will be online from 28 July, or phone a new national call centre. Availability of booking slots (the date, time and place you can be vaccinated) will vary between district health board (DHB) regions. Once you are eligible to be vaccinated, you can be vaccinated at any time. There is no cut off.

Registration Even if your age band isn’t open, everyone aged 16 and over will be able to go to Book My Vaccine to register for an invitation from 28 July. Registration means we will be certain to have your correct contact details and when your age group is opened, you will get an invitation telling you it’s your turn to book.

Find out more at Covid19.govt.nz

Other ways to get vaccinated As we go through the year there will be other ways for people to be vaccinated. These will include workplace vaccinations and other targeted vaccination events across the country. For some remote rural communities we will vaccinate all age groups at the same time to make it easier for them. Our successful whānaucentred approach to vaccinations will continue for Māori and Pacific communities and those with disabilities.

From 1850-70, the German population of the Waimea and Moutere Valleys was bolstered by the arrival in Nelson of at least 200 German immigrants; aboard the ‘Mariner’ in September 1850, the ‘Inchinnan’ in May 1856, the ‘John Masterman’ in February 1857, the ‘Anne Longton’ in June 1860, the barque ‘Violet’ in July 1864, the ‘Magna Bona’ in March 1865, and the ‘Halcyone’ in September 1869. These people followed the earlier arrival of the German migrant ship, the ‘St. Pauli’. In 1839 the North German Missionary Society, which had been formed three years before by a group of Lutheran evangelists, suggested the establishment of a mission station in New Zealand.

The mission was to combine proselytising with colonisation and aimed to become self-supporting. The party of four chosen to found the NZ mission had all been trained in the missionary school: in Greek, Latin, English, geography, singing, and sketching. Johann Carl Riemenschneider, born 6 August 1817, an “intelligent and sensitive man” aged 25 years, and Johann Friedrich H. Wohlers, brought up in the barren Geestland of the Hoya district and aged 31, were ordained a few months before their departure. Johann “Wilhelm” Christoph Heine, aged 28 years, and Johann Heinrich Trost, an easy-going peasant from Lauenberg, were expected to concern themselves more with the farming side. Trost, older than the others at 39 years,

Johann Heinrich “Henry” Joachim Bockmann (18601942), and his wife, Alvena “Vena” E.E. Rose (18691931). Photo: Supplied. was more of a general handyman than a scholar, having a useful knowledge of shoemaking and carpentry. Riemenschneider was chosen as leader because the society considered him such a bril-

liant student. Rev. Wohlers described Riemenschneider as “a fresh youth, full of life, full of faith”. The New Zealand Company founded the settlement of Nelson in early 1842. In their housing plan, a settler paid 300 pounds for which he received an allotted town section of one acre, a suburban section of 50 acres, and rural land of 150 acres. The first German migrant ship, ‘St. Pauli’, arrived at Nelson on 16 June 1843. Wilhelm Heine wrote: “We went from the landing place on foot around the hills to Nelson.” New book Moutere Pioneers, by Graeme Tyree, details 17 families who settled the Moutere area, and traces their first three generations in NZ. The book launch is on 24 June at 1pm at the Moutere Community Centre.

Holly’s balancing act Jonty Dine After being struck down with glandular fever, Brightwater School teacher Holly Chandler had to put her promising volleyball career on hold. The 22-year-old already had a handful of New Zealand caps under her belt before illness took her out of the game for two years. However, Holly returned to the court at the New Zealand Provincial Championships this month with her performance

for Tasman earning selection in the inaugural Southern Pounamu squad. “It’s really exciting, it’s the first time they have done it so it’s great to be giving volleyball a more prominent spot.” Holly got sick just as she was beginning her placement as a primary school teacher. “It was really bad timing,” she says. After a month out of action, Holly was forced to put volleyball on the backburner and focus on her studies. Now healthy

again and a fully registered primary teacher, Holly is looking to pick up right where she left off. Her current schedule has her either playing, training, or umpiring every day of the week, as well as juggling her teaching commitments. “I have some early nights, that’s for sure, but I love being active and I love the social aspect. I do it because I enjoy it.” Some of Holly’s biggest fans include her Year 1 and 2 students. “They know all about my sport and are constantly asking how I’m going.” Pounamu will play in Auckland on 26-27 June and 10-12 July in Christchurch.

Trees lock up carbon and stop erosion. Forestry is also a highly productive land-use. The forestry value chain generates significantly more value-add on a per hectare basis than the sheep and beef farming industry. PwC, May 2020 No primary sector is expected to contribute more to the post-covid export recovery than forestry The potential export revenue from the forestry sector could reach $10.1 billion by 2030. Growing company builds quality ‘next level’ homes If you are building or renovating, choosing the right builder is hugely important, someone you can trust and who has the expertise to do a great job. Marshall Builders, which is run by licensed building practitioner Steve Marshall, offers a wide variety of building, renovation and custom carpentry services across Nelson and Tasman. “Our vision is to create exceptional, practical and well-designed homes,” says Steve. “We want our brand to be connected with quality, energy-efficiency and sustainability.” Marshall Builders likes to customise a build to the client’s requirements including offering practical designs and solutions along the way. “Often it’s those small things that can make a big difference.” Business Services Manager Lilly Minnich, says people sometimes have the perception that the construction industry is a ‘little bit rough,’ an image they want to change. “We have created a great team culture where everybody is seen and valued, a caring family

culture where we treat everyone really well and give them opportunities, a place where they can bring an idea and it’s heard,” says Lilly. The positive team culture also has flow on effects for their clients, because it creates a good atmosphere and provides an exceptional building experience which goes ‘above and beyond.’ “To us, having a trusting relationship is a must-have,” says Steve. Steve has run his business for over 10 years in the Nelson/Tasman region, currently building ‘spec’ homes as well as houses for customers. “It’s really above standard; Better insulation solutions, European tapware and appliances, thermally broken windows where possible, and so on, which really improves the overall quality of the home,” says Lilly. If you are contemplating building, Marshall Builders would love to talk with you about your project ideas. Call Marshall Builders today on 03 265 5053. Visit www.marshallbuild ers.co.nz.

Do something for nothing Joshua Coombes is a hairdresser by trade, whose client list for the past few years has exclusively been the homeless. It all started on his way home from working in a London salon. Joshua met a man who was sleeping rough and he just felt that he wanted to do something for the man. He remembered that he had his scissors in his bag and offered the man a haircut. Joshua spent the next hour cutting the man’s hair and trimming his beard and, most importantly, talking and listening to his new client. Six months later he gave up his job at

the salon and has been working for nothing since 2015. Joshua started a movement and has captured his experience in a book entitled, `Doing Something for Nothing.' “Next week is National Volunteer Week and is an opportunity for us to pause and recognize the contribution that volunteers make to our communities”, said Gordon Oldfield, manager of Volunteer Nelson. About a million people in New Zealand donate their time through volunteering. The economic value of their work is estimated to be $4 billion. Oldfield says, “There are volunteers working

Monaco mid-winter marathon The 8th Monaco Mid-Winter Marathon took place on Sunday 20 June in cool, overcast conditions but luckily managed to avoid the expected rain for large parts of the event. Given the weather of the few days prior to the event, the course was in better condition than was expected for the participants, who took up the challenge with great enthusiasm as usual. Some 69 entrants, made up of 42 runners and walkers and 27 two-person relay teams, took on the course along the Great Taste Trail from the Honest Lawyer in Monaco to Rabbit Island and return, in what has become a firm fixture in the local running calenWomen’s marathon dar. winner Natalie Price. Entries had fallen this year as some previous runners have moved to pastures new, or injury or illness prevented them competing, but the event also attracted some new faces. A number of these were first-time marathoners, which coincides with this unique event’s ambition to break down barriers of entry to running. The event is unique in that the ‘entry fee’ is donated to lo- Men’s marathon winner cal charities, including the Massimo Nember. Heart of Biking Trust who administer the trail. The marathon itself was won by Natalie Price from Blenheim, who was runner-up in 2020. She finished around 10 minutes ahead of the first male runner, Massimo Nember, who was shocked at being the first male home, having ‘never finished first in a race before’. The men’s marathon was a close fought battle, with less than a minute between him and second-placed male Lee Dodunski. Steve Maina came home in 3rd place. In the women’s marathon, Colette Read came home in 2nd place, followed by Susannah Thomson who rounded out the top 3. The two-person relay proved to be a thriller. Having seen the entry list, the organizers expected a cracking race and that’s exactly what they got. Angus Wemyss, who won last years’ relay race, teamed up with former New Zealand runner Julian Matthews to come home to win by six seconds from Owen Warburton and Joel Bowater in a sprint finish. Hayden Squance and Andre Bonny came home in 3rd place, with all three teams smashing last years’ course record. Given Julian’s history in running, everyone connected with the event were delighted to have such an ambassador for the sport taking part. Julian is helping to train some local runners, giving back to athletics what it gave him. We hope to see him and his running group back next year to defend their title. The organisers would like to thank all marshals who helped to ensure the event went ahead smoothly, local clubs Athletics Nelson and Waimea Harriers for all of their expertise and use of equipment for the day and finally to the sponsors of prizes, local runner Rob Rix and Seifried Wines. The winter blues have yet to stop the first two events of Nelson Dressage’s Pitt & Moore Winter Series from going ahead, with the first event being held in the last weekend of April. The second day was scheduled for the last Sunday of May but heavy rain meant it was postponed for two weeks. The Winter Series is a great chance to give dressage a go in a friendly competition environment and typically sees large entries from mainly local riders. This year is no exception, with four arenas in use for the first two competitions and a number of new combinations out among the seasoned competitors. The day before the second Winter Series saw the weather taking a turn for the worse and the event was postponed until 13 June. Although that day dawned very

dreary with dark clouds threatening for most of the day, the rain stayed away until everything was finished and packed away. Participation is a key focus for Nelson Dressage and this year, thanks to generous sponsorship from MTF Finance, a ‘Nelson Dressage Future Stars Scholarship’ was offered. The scholarship is aimed at helping an unregistered local rider progress their dressage goals. The scholarship includes an ESNZ rider and horse/pony membership, riding and arena craft lessons, guidance with presentation for future events, horse and rider apparel and a mentor. The scholarship was awarded at the prize-giving of the first winter series and the lucky recipient was Sophie Vercoe, aged 9. Days 3 and 4 of the Pitt & Moore Winter Series are on the last Sunday in June and July at Rough Island Equestrian Park.

Nuggets nullify Giants as history celebrated Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

When Dave Taylor helped found the Nelson Giants in 1981, the side was so amateur they had to billet visiting teams, provide their own referee and wash their own uniforms. “We never had a physio, doctor or all the support staff they have now, and we all had full time jobs,” Dave says. He says it was a serious challenge trying to balance both his basket-

ball and running his own timber business. “I was lucky to have a really good family who loved the game, my wife even washed our singlets.” Celebrating 40 years since inception, the Mike Pero Nelson Giants had its party spoiled by the Otago Nuggets on Friday night. A host of former players, coaches and administrators were on hand to mark the occasion but were subjected to a frustrating 94-84 loss at the Trafalgar Centre. Among them was Dave, who was also on hand to donate a singlet

from the 1983 Giants side. “I found it in the bottom of one of my drawers.” Dave says it was fantastic to catch up with a number of faces from his playing days. “Some of them I haven’t seen for quite a few years.” Dave says, though he doesn’t get to as many games as he would like, his heart still firmly lies with the Giants. Unfortunately, the side was unable to mark the occasion with a victory. Dropping the first two quarters,

Nelson came back strongly to win the third and fourth, but it was too late and the Giants suffered their seventh loss of 2021. Skipper Sam Dempster fought tirelessly throughout 40 minutes, typical of the talismanic veteran. “It’s pretty disappointing, we know how important that game was to us, so it stings a bit. It was a special occasion so we would have loved to come away with the win, but credit to them.” The Nuggets opened with three consecutive threes and raced to a 14-2 lead as the healthy home

crowd was soon silenced with the Giants struggling for cohesion. Sam says Otago’s early accuracy took them out of the contest. “They shot really well, we battled away, tried our best to get back into the game but it just wasn’t enough. We can’t start like that.” It won’t get much easier for Nelson who are set to meet the Saints at the Trafalgar Centre on Friday evening. “It puts a bit of pressure on us now, but it is all part of the challenge to get ready for Wellington and I fully believe we can do it.”

In wintery conditions that were not entirely conducive to free running, high scoring rugby, Wanderers started very slowly, and Moutere & Awatere defended stoutly which put extra pressure on Wanderer’s target. Conceding a try after 13 minutes then taking 32 minutes before making any inroads on the scoreboard was just too late, and from that point although scoring regularly the chances of continuing into the semi-finals was going to be a step too far. Halftime score of 17-7 increased through the second spell to finish at 52-14 with 8 tries and 6 conversions, but as Central defeated Waitohi by 55-22, Wanderers were left ruing the failure by 9 points and the end of their challenge for the Tasman Trophy.

A celebratory toast by manager Kyle Pakipaki on retaining the Pirates Cup between Riwaka and Wanderers, as donated by Steve MacNabb. Photo: Supplied. Although tries were shared equally between backs and forwards, centres Tone Vaka and Sione Holani crossed for three between them, but the two tries scored by the hosts ensured Central would represent Marlborough in the semi-finals this season. As per every game this season, Sam Moli led from the front, this week as blind side flanker, with great support from the front row of Monu Moli, Seth Brown and Sosefo Vaka, plus good impact from

the bench by Cam King and Jayden Woolley, who return ed from injury as if he had never been away. In the final analysis, Taylors Wanderers only suffered two defeats, to the top teams Kahurangi and Waimea Old Boys, but two draws and some missed bonus points consign them to an early finish for 2021, albeit with a fine away victory. Meanwhile over in Riwaka, the A. C. Palmer Div 2 team was in an arm wrestle with

the local team in atrocious conditions, with surface water and torrential rain. Once again Wanderers started slowly and were soon down 7-0 and still behind at the break by 12-7, following a fine try to Josh Kelly from a crossfield kick. The second half was notable for some fine committed play by the two new boys in the pack, Mitchell Donaldson and Taine Wastney, ably supported by a couple of team seniors, Josh Post and Ron Roberts. Gareth Palmer and Jake Jenner directed play well and Loni Lama set up the winning try with 10 minutes to go, keeping play-off chances alive and retaining the Pirates Cup between the two clubs with the scoreline of 19-12. The 3 Bee Women’s team also played Riwaka, but at Brightwater, also in terrible conditions, falling behind early and down by 24-0 at halftime. However, the second half was a far more even contest with both teams scoring three tries and a conversion. Wanderers tries were scored by Michelle Miller-Leef and Alisi Seigafo, which narrowed the scoreline to 29-17 before Riwaka kicked away for the final victory of 41-17.

Tasman Trophy semi-finalists found amid mud Jonty Dine At Greenmeadows, on a sloppy surface more like a speedway track, Stoke triumphed 24-0 to resign Nelson to 2nd to last on the points table. It had been nine long years since Tom Marshall ran out in Nelson colours and it wasn’t exactly a friendly homecoming with the pitch a far cry from the dry, hard tracks of Japan. “I don’t think I’ve played on a worse ground. It was fun though and good to be back.”

Netball

Prices Waimea Ahurei welcomed Jacks Magenta to premier netball with a resounding 61-20 defeat last week. The defending champions were ruthless against the newly-promoted side as the second round of competition got underway. Unbeaten in senior one, Magenta has replaced Prices Pango who were relegated following the first phase of competition. However, the side had its first defeat this season at the hands of Prices who picked up its sixth win on the trot. It was a much more closely fought battle on court two between Jacks and Stoke. Locked up with one minute left, Jacks reversed its one-point loss to triumph 48-47. In the final game, Richmond edged Nelson College for Girls 39-30.

Tom left New Zealand for Europe in 2012 where he spent six seasons with Gloucester. In 2020, he moved to Japan to link up with the Red Hurricanes. The game got off to an exhilarating start with Stoke hooker Kendall Hodson nabbing an intercept from halfway and showing enough gas to get to the line. The fireworks soon fizzled in what was a frustrating half with a number of errors. Former Chiefs’ Tevita Koloamatangi rumbled his way over for Stoke three

minutes from halftime. Jack Grooby struck again right after the break before Matt Graham-Williams secured the bonus-point win to close out their season. This weekend’s semi-finals sees top seeds Kahurangi hosting Central in Riwaka with Marist and Waimea’s rivalry set to reignite at Trafalgar Park.

Football

The Richmond Athletic AFC Foxes made history as the first Nelson women’s team to reach round three of the Kate Sheppard Cup this season. They would however come up against a clinical Coastal Spirit side, going down 9-0 at Jubilee Park on Sunday. Nelson Suburbs also sufferED a heavy loss as they were eliminated from the Chatham Cup by Cashmere Technical. Suburbs were beaten 7-3 in a high scoring match in Christchurch.
