From lonely park to thriving for Thorp Bush

Thorp Bush continues to be reinvigorated with the playground now brightly repainted as work continues in a bid to bring the community back to the treasured park.

Thorp Bush has immense ecological value and contains some trees now uncommon in this area, such as Maire and Pokaka but unfortunately the bush is classed as an ‘acutely threatened’ ecosystem.

Since 1977 sporadic efforts have been made to restore the

bush and fill in some of the clearings with appropriate native species and the forest is now considerably denser than in 1950.

One of the few remaining podocarphardwood low land forests in the Tasman District, Thorp Bush is important to iwi as part of Te Maatu (big bush) and as a historic large food garden.

The Tasman Youth Council has been instrumental in the park’s rejuvenation and are determined to transform it from being the lonely park it’s

become to a cherished community area.

In October 2019, the Tasman Youth Council created a new entrance way into the area which included social seating, pou and information boards about the area’s history. This area has now become well used by young and old visitors to the park.

Continuing their good work, in September 2022, the Tasman Youth Council worked with the Motueka Community Board to put some life back into the playground. This

included painting the playground dark green with splashed of colour and replacing components such as the slide and viewing windows.

At the start of spring the Tasman Youth Council also completed a rubbish clean up in the bush area where they gathered 8 large bags of rubbish from throughout the park in an hour. Sorting through the rubbish, they managed to recycle all but one bag which went to general landfill.

The Youth Council is currently working with

the TDC on a plan to install seating near the playground and rearranging rubbish bins to better locations to help reduce rubbish waste being left in the area.

“We would like to see more of the community enjoying this beautiful park and taking pride in the area as it is an important part of Motueka history,” says the Youth Council.

“We would love to see more of our community visiting this area for picnics, walks and to learn about our native environment.”

Upcoming community conservation events

Create a possum nightclub or encourage rat rush hour - the future of wildlife in Nelson Tasman depends on it.

At a free public talk next Wednesday in Mapua, wildlife ecologist and predator control specialist Cam Speedy will share insight from his 40 years of experience in predator control.

Cam says controlling introduced predators is like being in business.

“You need to find the right location, do plenty of advertising, attract the punters and close the deal.”

Co-hosted by Predator Free New Zealand Trust, Tasman Environmental Trust (TET) and Tasman District Council, the free event will help the Nelson Tasman community improve their efforts towards a predator free New Zealand 2050.

Sandwiched between national parks and home to incredible, yet vulnerable, birdlife, Tasman is a crucial area for controlling rats, stoats and possums, Predator Free New Zealand Trust chief executive Jessi Morgan says.

“There are large projects like Project Janszoon in Abel Tasman and new technology such as artificial intelligence that are building the path to predator free 2050 but it can’t be done without people on the ground, in the community, doing the mahi.

“That’s why we hit the road with Cam Speedy, to bring his expertise to every corner of Aotearoa and

help people get the most out of their hard work,” Jessi says.

With Abel Tasman, Kahurangi, Richmond Ranges and Nelson Lakes all a stone’s throw, Nelson Tasman is home to nature and wildlife locals cherish and tourists travel from all over to experience, says TET regional community predator control coordinator Elaine Asquith.

“There’s banded dotterel and godwits on the Motueka sandspit, whio in the catchment area, white heron, banded rail and spoonbill in the Waimea and Otuwhero inlets and tui and piwakawaka in our gardens. Kaka and tieke are back in the Abel Tasman. The future of these taonga needs effective predator control in our backyards, creeks, valleys and coastlines,” she says.

“We’ve made amazing gains for the biodiversity in our region and we need to continue the mahi

to maintain it. We will have maximum impact through working together as a community to create a safe habitat for biodiversity to thrive. Bringing people together at this public talk will create an opportunity for more connections and help us work together to bridge gaps.

TET supports largescale restoration

projects and grassroots conservation groups. It’s paying off.

“We have whio breeding in the Motueka Catchment Area, something not seen for generations.

“In our work to restore the habitat and protect the banded rail from introduced mammals in Waimea Inlet, staff and volunteers have caught more

than 8,000 rats, stoats, weasels and mice,” Elaine says. Fine tuning your predator control with Cam Speedy 6 – 7:30 pm

Motueka Coastal Bus Celebrates 1st Birthday

Motueka Coastal Bus has been celebrating its 1st birthday this month. If you haven’t tried jumping aboard yet, this is what passengers have to say about the service…………

“It’s a great service, so easy to get my daughter home from Richmond,” says Joanne from Motueka.

Graham from Mapua says, “I use the bus 3 times a month as it suits my needs, the drivers are very helpful, and I can chat with other passengers. I’m very pleased with the service and would highly recommend it.”

“Recently had a lovely ride into town on this bus - lots of chat and there in no time,” says Sue from Motueka.

Motueka’s Faith Wells says the Coastal Bus is providing a “wonderful service”.

“If you’re unable to get to the i-Site they’ll pick you up at your door and all for only $10. The drivers are just so obliging,” says Faith.

Congratulations to Belinda Fleming for her entry to the ‘Name

the Bus’ competition held in September.

The drivers chose her suggestion of “MotuWeka Connector” as their favourite nickname for the vehicle. Belinda won herself a month’s free bus pass!

A regular service is operated Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, leaving Motueka i-SITE at 9.30am to Tasman

and Mapua, then onto Richmond Sundial Square and Richmond Aquatic Centre, returning at 1pm. Return fare Motueka to Richmond $10. Prebooking essential via Motueka i-SITE 03 528 6543. Pop into the Pop-Up Gallery in Upper Moutere

In the quaint village of Upper Moutere the Old Post Office has long been at the centre of the community, and on Friday Jamie Brown and Sophie Holt opened their PopUp Gallery in the building’s rear.

Jamie and Sophie have been flat out leading up to the opening creating an impressive array of works, from sculptures, ceramics, wreaths, fashion and candles.

The pair first met ten years ago when they were exhibiting together, and it was a

couple of years ago when discussions first began about having a shared studio space.

The two lifelong artists say creating is in their blood and is what makes them tick.

“It’s my most happy place in the world if I’m creating and in a good flow,” says Sophie.

It’s a sentiment shared by Jamie who says he was “born to make”.

The Moutere Hills have always been something of a magnet for artists and artisans, with a number of galleries and workshops

of sculptors, ceramic artists, woodworkers and artisan food producers that are sure to leave you feeling inspired by their passion for all things creative.

And now with Jamie and Sophie’s PopUp added to the mix, there’s plenty of reasons to take a wee tiki tour. Artisan store Tasteology is also housed in the same building with their great coffee, delicatessen, wines and gifts along with award winning jeweller, Stacey Whale.

There’s great coffee and food on-site and a delightfully sunny courtyard making it the perfect one-stop shop for all your Christmas gifts and treasures for yourself while supporting our talented local artists.

Fete for SASH organisations

When a number of female clients passing through Dee Jones’ Laser & Skin Clinic were suffering from the symptoms of menopause Dee saw a need, so in June she began a group as a way of bringing women together to talk about health, life, hobbies, trials and tribulations.

“I see so many lovely women through my clinic and I could see a need for a platform like this where women could share and learn together,” says Dee.

“So many women were suffering with the symptoms of menopause yet so many had no idea about the treatments and support available. Some were tearful and worried about their relationships and employment as they felt so affected by the changes going on with them.”

Meeting up with Greenwood Medical

GP Colette Pienaar

to seek advice, Dee thought they could gather 15-25 women and meet every now and then in her clinic to catch up.

Together the two women established a page ‘Girl Talk’ and invited friends to start a conversation around women’s health.

“The page grew so fast with so many women eager to share and discuss not just menopause but all things from diet, recipes, books and movie recommendations.”

Due to the page’s popularity and growth, Colette and Dee brought ex-local Claire, with a legal background, on board to help manage what had become a busy page.

“We are so lucky to have a GP admin the group to bring her expert knowledge and who is a keen advocate of women’s health,” says Dee.

The group now has well over 600 mem-

bers and after the initial idea of meeting in person as a small group, the online chat group is serving the purpose as a safe space to share and learn.

On Sunday, 4 December they are hosting a fete from 10am-2pm on the lawn at Laser & Skin Clinic, 33 Greenwood Street to raise funds

for the local SASH organisations (sexual abuse support and healing).

Stallholders are welcome ($25 per table and BYO table) as are donations of goods to sell or contributions of any kind. Please message via Facebook page ‘Girl Talk’ (image above) or contact Dee at her Laser & Skin Clinic.

appeal raises over $130k for rescue helicopter

The Top of the South community has given a major boost to one of the region’s most vital services, the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter.

On Monday, 7 November NBS General Manager Commercial, Howie Timms and Rescue Helicopter Trust General Manager, Paula Muddle announced that the NBS Rescue Helicopter Appeal, run throughout October, raised a total of $130,402.90.

Paula says the fundraising was an incredible effort, exceeding expectations at a time when rising inflation and household costs are putting pressure on people’s discretionary spending.

“We are so grateful to everyone who got involved in this year’s campaign who drove a number of activities that really made a difference to the final total.”

Local businesses such as Lambrettas, Salvito’s, Nelson KIA, MD Outdoor Sports, Kismet, the Action Centre and Richmond Fresh Choice donated a percentage of their sales to the appeal, whilst other organisations donated in kind. Gibbons also made a significant donation at the end of the campaign.

“Thank you also to everyone who took part in the #NBS10for10 press up challenge, donated online, or who gave their time and skills, such as the women who sold their jams and chutneys at a roadside stall. We thank everyone for their generosity. It truly has been a magnificent community effort.

“We are very much indebted to NBS for supporting this appeal for the third year running and to our other corporate sponsors who make a real difference in keeping the

rescue helicopter and its crew in the air and saving lives.”

NBS Chief Executive, Tony Cadigan says the inclusion of the fun #NBS10for10 Challenge in this year’s appeal was a way that people could show their support without having to donate. The challenge asked people or groups to post a video of themselves doing 10 push-ups and passing on the challenge. For every video posted, NBS donated $10 to the appeal.

Tony says of this year’s appeal, “I am absolutely delighted with the increase in funds raised for the Trust. We were proud to be able to get the Tasman Mako involved in challenging our community to take part in the #NBS10for10 Challenge and through this we’re happy that we could engage with the wider community to raise awareness of the vital work of the rescue helicopter. I’d also like to thank the hundreds of NBS clients who engaged with the appeal by supporting a term investment special we ran during the month of October.”

Summing up the impact that this appeal total will make to the Rescue Helicopter Trust, Paula says,

“Last month, we responded to 43 missions across Te Tauihu. It was humbling and heart-warming speaking to the crew involved when hearing the positive outcomes and what it meant to them. One crew member literally held up a piece of equipment that we had just purchased, and they told me that it directly saved two lives. We are all in this together as a community and we can make a real difference thanks to the support of NBS and our family of sponsors and supporters.”

This room is ideal as a work-from-home office space, for a teenager or perhaps an elderly relative, though the current owners use it as a profitable AirBnB. bayleys.co.nz/4051630

Fish Mainland – South Island recreational fishers’ voice

Jeremy Banks of the Nelson-based Plink Ltd, along with Fish Mainland’s Board of Directors, will hold meetings on Wednesday, 30 November, 6pm at the Community House in Motueka and on Thursday, 1 December, 6pm at the Takaka Rec Park Centre to discuss two important topics for local recreational marine fishers.

First, Fish Mainland has collaborated with the Nelson-based Plink Software Ltd to develop a recreational fisher self-reporting system first applied to the blue cod fishery and currently expanding into other fisheries.

Tautoko Ukraine Charitable Trust Update –

Please Donate to Family of Killed Truck Driver

Tautoko Ukraine

Charitable Trust, formed earlier this year to raise funds for Ukraine volunteer humanitarian charities, is grateful for the support of our Nelson Tasman region for its raffles, bake sales and art auction. Together our donations have contributed to supporting Ukraine civilians whose homes have been destroyed with the basic necessities such as shelter, food, water and hygiene supplies. To provide urgently needed medical and specialist first aid supplies to save the lives of wounded civilians and defenders. To build a prototype field kitchen and refrigeration unit from shipping containers that can provide nutritious food and hot meals in a war zone.

Our local Ukraine support community was deeply saddened to hear last week of the accidental death of one of the military truck drivers

involved in moving the field kitchen built by the “Everything will be Ukraine” charity in Odesa. Yevgeny Radionov, Project Manager and our contact for the charity, informed us that driver Ivan Vdovichenko, who went by the sign “Kamaz”, was part of a convoy evacuating civilians in the southern counteroffensive, when his utility vehicle was destroyed by an anti-tank mine. Ivan was killed instantly in the explosion on November, 10.

Ivan, aged 33 when he died, was one of the true heroes – a competent mechanic, truck driver and electrician, completed 8 years’ service in the Navy and as platoon commander had helped to defend Kherson (the only regional capital city taken by Russia during its invasion) earlier this year. Ivan voluntarily continued his military service to defend Ukraine even though, as father to

three children and three stepchildren he was officially exempt from compulsory service.

Ukraine has shown the world a vision of what can be achieved through its high level of volunteer mobilisation. Personal stories such as Ivan’s show the level of commitment, resourcefulness, courage and personal sacrifice that is a daily fact of life for millions of volun-

teers and defenders in Ukraine.

We would like to ask our Nelson Tasman region to acknowledge the work of Yevgeny, Ivan and the “Everything will be Ukraine” charity by making a small donation to Ivan’s family.

Ukraine faces a brutal winter: electricity is rationed, and many Ukrainians are now without heating and municipal water supplies following Russian

attacks on civilian infrastructure and housing. Russia’s military failure to keep Ukraine territories that it illegally annexed has seen Russia instead attempt to destroy Ukraine civilian infrastructure and terrorise civilians with repeated missile attacks – similar to tactics used to destroy cities in Syria.

Motueka’s Kathy Lloyd, a 4th generation descendant of emigrants from the region,

says ‘it is very confronting to watch the barbarity inflicted on innocent Ukrainians – but with continued support Ukraine can defend itself and peace will be won – and in the meantime, we can all help Ukraine in its hour of need”.

This is the article in the Ukraine newspaper:

During the counteroffensive in the south of Ukraine, Ivan Vdovichenko, a resi-

dent of the Bereziv district of Odesa, from the village of Velikiy Buyalyk, died. A s reported in the village council, Ivan was 33 years old. 6 children were left without a father. Ivan died on November 10.

CRAIG’S CARS OF THE WEEK

2017 TOYOTA C-HR 1.8 HYBRID

5 Year Hybrid Signature Class Vehicle Warranty, Alloy Wheels, Adaptive Cruise Control, Rev Camera LED Headlights, Keyless Entry, Push Button Start Fabulous in Ruby, 30,571kms

$36,990

A rare visitor to our shores, a sub-antarctic fur seal that turned up at Ruby Bay in Tasman in a skinny state, is being cared for by vet Mana Stratton to regain weight before being released back to sea.

The seal weighed only about 7 kilograms when it was found on the Ruby Bay walkway on 16 September. It has now reached nearly 14 kilograms, being fed seafood supplied by Sealord, and the aim is to get it to at least 15 kilograms.

Subantarctic fur seals are “cousins” of our native kekeno/ New Zealand fur seals. They are typically found on offshore islands throughout the subantarctic region and they occasionally turn up in New Zealand.

Department of Conservation ranger Dirk de Vries says the male juvenile seal was likely very emaciated from using a lot of energy to make the tough, long journey here.

“It’s heartening to see the recovery of the subantarctic fur seal under Mana Stratton’s care and we’re very grateful for the support she provides in rehabilitating injured or sick native wildlife. We also thank Sealord for providing fish for the seal.

“It’s planned to release the seal back into the sea once it’s gained enough weight. We hope it may find its way to its subantarctic home though we can’t be sure but helping it back to a healthy condition gives it a chance

to do so.”

Mana Stratton says the seal had been named Ruben for being found at Ruby Bay and she thanked local people who had kept it safe while waiting for DOC rangers to arrive.

“Ruben is progressing well which means he is displaying more and more of his normal behaviour and self-protection instincts. This can be challenging at times and requires protective clothing but it is a very good sign. Sealord’s support is greatly appreciated and Ruben agrees with the choice of fish they are supplying him.”

Sealord organised a ‘menu’ of fish suitable for Ruben, from which the best option was selected – southern blue whiting – a small, whole fish that could be easily defrosted and best represents

what Ruben would catch in the wild.

Sealord quality manager Mason Palliser says the company is always happy to help and has previously supported Mana’s efforts to rehabilitate penguins and two New Zealand fur seals.

“Sealord’s company vision is all about doing right by our whanau and the environment, so it’s great to be able to provide support like this wherever we can.”

DOC is asking people to report sightings of subantarctic fur seals so more can be learnt about their visits to our shores, including on numbers that come here. Last year there were several sightings of subantarctic fur seals including in Hawkes Bay, Whangamata and in Auckland.

Though subantarctic fur seals appear simi-

lar to New Zealand fur seals there are some obvious differences to distinguish the two species.

The subantarctic fur seal has a blunter/shorter nose and creamy-coloured fur on the throat and underside. New Zealand fur seals appear grey or brown and much more uniform in colour, while the subantarctic variety has very two-tone colouration with the distinctive pale cream underneath.

Sightings of what look to be subantarctic fur seals can be reported through the DOC website www.doc.govt.nz also by emailing Marinemammals@ doc.govt.nz .

People spotting them are asked to take and provide photos of it from different angles.

Counting down the days until the parade

The theme for this year’s parade is “A Celebration Christmas” which I’m sure we can all relate to! The event’s named sponsor NBS are truly in the Christmas Spirit after contacting Santa and organising him to come to the parade early again this year for photos in his Grotto at NBS on High Street.

“We had to cancel last year’s parade due to covid – but Santa needed his sleigh serviced at Motueka Auto Super Shoppe, so while he was visiting, he went around the local streets with the Motueka District Brass Band so the children didn’t miss out on seeing the big man in red. I still remember the smiling faces young and old – it was a magical evening” – Claire Hutt, Our Town Motueka Coordinator.

It’s almost time for Mouteka’s NBS Starlight Parade and our whole town is looking forward to it. This year’s parade night promises to be even more spectacular than ever.

Come and enjoy the 85th Motueka A&P Show

On Saturday 3 December the 85th Motueka A&P Show will take place at Marchwood Park and you are warmly invited to join in the festivities.

Some of our fondest memories as children was an outing to the annual A&P Show. For one day it felt like the whole town gathered together, in a spectacular mix of colour, excitement and competition.

Farmers would bring their animals and tractors, men would wield their axes and show off their wood chopping skills. There were balloons, face painters and lots

of carnival games. It was a place where we could devour hot chips and candyfloss while running around barefoot bumping into all of our friends.

Here in Motueka our annual A&P Show is so much more than just food, friends and farm animals. It’s a way to bring our town together as well as a whole day to celebrate what it means to be a Kiwi.

From town to country Agriculture & Pastrol Shows are part of New Zealand’s culture

A&P Shows were created as a country exhibition and fair, dedicated to celebrating, encouraging and developing New Zealand’s farming and agricultural excellence. Here in Motueka, our first Agricultural and Pastoral Show (A&P Show) was held in 1935.

In the beginning, A&P shows were mainly competitive with farmers displaying their animals and crops to show excellence and promote good breeding. As the shows grew in popularity, they included other competitions, attractions and family entertainment.

There are now around 90 shows across New Zealand every year, and for many towns, ours included, they’re the biggest event of the year. For overseas visitors, a trip to the local A&P Show is an insight into the ultimate Kiwiana experience.

It’s not a show without the Sturgeons, it’s always exciting to see what rides are at the show. As always the Sturgeon’s will have plenty of candy floss, hot chips and hotdogs on offer for hungry show goers.

The Motueka A&P Show is lucky enough to own a vintage merry go around, this is a huge hit with the youngsters. Once a year the vintage merry go round is in operation at the annual show, do make the most of it. Another popular ride for the kids is Percy the Train from Thomas the Tank Engine fame.

New World Open at NBS Motueka Golf

Saturday, 12 November saw the running of the eagerly anticipated New World Open, one of our premier events of the year.

While the mornings weather was rather ugly the afternoon turned out magnificently for the over 100 players who had entered.

Our Green Keeper Nick Van Leeuwen proved once again what a competent golfer he is by taking out the Gross with a score of 71.

This after not playing for a couple of months!

Blair Bavin was second on 73 with Craig Marshall on 75

Natalee Reed, a regular visitor to our club, won the ladies gross with a score of 82. She was closely followed by Donna Mitchell and Lee Willetts who both score 83.

In the Nett Division Rex Edwards was a

popular winner with a score of 69. This division was also very close with Andy Tasker, Pete Cederman and Bernard Hedges all scoring 70.

Fifth was Marcus Beuker on 71.

The Ladies Nett Division was won by Dael Ray on a score of 70.

Another close division with Sue Park, Donna Mitchell and Marie Blackmore all scoring 71

Fifth was Sally Jones on 72.

There were 15 twos scored with Paul Silke scoring two.

In addition there were a heap of novelty prizes on the Par three’s.

The Club is very appreciative of the support received from New World Motueka in sponsoring this event.

After just a few years this tournament has become one of our most popular, attracting players from all round the district.

Top 20 in the world for young orienteer

Teen adventure racer Zefa Fa’avae has returned with top twenty placings from his first forest Junior World Orienteering Championships in Portugal that were initially delayed due to forest fires. Instead of around 160 competitors, 120 took part with all the top spots going to the Europeans who had just finished a

summer of racing and training in the area.

“The terrain was really fun, it was parkour at times jumping and leaping off rocks and smashing through the bush,” says Zefa.

The event was held in Portugal’s Aguiar da Beira, a small county in the centre of Portugal. With an impressive forested area, lovely sights, his-

torical monuments and tasty regional gastronomy, Aguiar da Beira met orienteering for the first time in 2014. Since then, many have been to races held in the area and many orienteers have visited, both for training camps and competition.

“Aguiar da Beira terrains present excellent conditions to Orienteering, which

mobilise us to value more and more what is ours, what is rare and beautiful, with a particular and relevant characteristic – Orienteering generates a carbon footprint close to zero, being environmentally amazing,” says mayor Virgilio Cunha. “It is with great commitment and interest that the Municipality of Aguiar

da Beira was coorganizing the Junior World Orienteering Championship 2022. Given the importance of such an event for our municipality, for the region and for the country, other entities are involved in this organization. Together we aim to meet the high expectations of the athletes and the Orienteering commu-

nity worldwide.”

Located between 600-900 metres above sea level the forest is mostly covered by pine trees and in some areas deciduous trees such as Chestnut and oak can be found. The area has moderate to high climb and large areas of bare rock with a lot of rocky details present in most areas of boulders and cliffs.

There’s also undergrowth and dense vegetation can be frequently found, especially in the deepest valleys. Both of Zefa’s events returned impressive results, claiming 14th in the long distance and 17th in the middle distance. With the event for under 20, Zefa still has two more years in this grade.
