Mad Butcher to join Phoenix’s fight Andrew Board

The renowned Mad Butcher has joined hundreds of Nelsonians in pledging his support for nine year-old Nelson cancer sufferer Phoenix Stafford. The Mad Butcher, or Sir Peter Leitch, was due in Nelson for a Tasman Rugby League fundraiser this March. Then when the TRL board suggested it give a percentage of the money raised to Phoenix and his family, Sir Peter lit up, says TRL chairman Paul Lafotanoa.

“I emailed him to suggest it and he emailed back straight away and said ‘call me,’ so I did, and he said ‘tell me about the boy’. I told him a bit and he said ‘stop right there, I’m definitely coming down.’” The support of the Mad Butcher, himself a cancer survivor and well-known rugby league fan, has been joined by hundreds of others since Phoenix’s story appeared in Nelson Weekly last Tuesday. Phoenix’s mother, Renea Pidduck, says she is overwhelmed with the response and with the amount of people who have do-

nated money, sent messages and offered to help in whatever way they can. “It’s been amazing, really awesome. People have been really generous and just done what they can and that’s what I like. It’s not how much they give, just the thought, even a dollar is amazing.” She says the attention has been great for Phoenix as he battles a tumour in his spine. He has undergone 18 months of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. But with a new tumour still growing in his spine, doctors have told Renea they will

not operate or continue chemotherapy, so she and her family are raising money for alternative treatment that she says has so far seemed to work well. Already $9000 has been raised via donations to the Phoenix Treatment Appeal bank account and collections on the street. Forty tins also sit in businesses around Nelson, where shoppers can donate. There are also some TradeMe auctions raising money for Phoenix, including two

Bravery hailed at police parade

Former Tasman area police commander Gary Knowles made a special trip back to Nelson last week to pay tribute to a number of Nelson officers he called “tremendous”. Gary is now an area commander based in Christchurch but he says he wanted to come back, just weeks after leaving, to attend the twice-a-year Pay Parade ceremony at the Nelson police station on Friday. Several awards for good conduct and long service were handed out, but the highest honour of the day went to an officer that wasn’t even on duty when he earned it. Detective Pat Nally was on holiday on the West Coast when two white baiters were in the ocean and in trouble. Pat grabbed a life jacket, swam in and saved one of the men. He was given the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand award for his efforts. Constable Shane Ohlson was another stand out, given the District Commanders Commendation after rushing into a fight where

That was really nice to hear and it’s good for Phoenix.” Phoenix is due to head back down to Christchurch this week for another scan on his back as doctors now think the tumour may not be active.

It was in Christchurch, while receiving chemotherapy, that Phoenix had his last message from the Mad Butcher, says Renea. “It’s really cool he’s coming down because last year he sent a big parcel down to Phoenix with all sorts of rugby league jerseys, signed posters and hats. A wide-reaching police sting saw thousands of drivers stopped in Nelson over the weekend, with hundreds of tickets issued. The operation was so succesful police say they are planning another one. Among the drivers stopped were 13 drunk drivers, who are now facing prosecution. The sting was a joint effort between police, NZ Transport Agency, Canterbury Traffic Alcohol Group and staff from the Nelson Court. A total of 9857 vehicles were stopped at checkpoints in Nelson City and Motueka over three nights. Five disqualified drivers were caught and 15 other drivers had their licences suspended for various offences. Police say they were also able to catch people who

had not paid fines, with the courts impounding five cars which belonged to fine defaulters. Highway Patrol team leader sergeant Stu Wright says while it was disappointing that 13 people had driven after drinking, the positive thing was the operation was successful in netting them and getting them off the road, along with the five disqualified drivers. Stu says working with the other agencies proved very successful. “This multi-agency approach is something we will utilise more. We’re sending a very clear message to the public that drink driving won’t be tolerated.” More than 300 infringement notices were issued during the operation. MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE: Tom Turner, right, an AUT design student, brought his “Wailing Wall” to Nelson’s 1903 Square last week. Tom has travelled all around New Zealand with the project as part of his Master’s thesis. Tom encouraged people to write a message, put it in a bottle and add it to the wall. Ella Dickson and brother Leo of Nelson were among many locals who added a message to the wall. Flower power at Nelson flower show Stoke gardener Arch Crerar was "pretty chuffed" to be amongst the top winners at the Nelson Horticultural Society's annual summer show on the weekend, even if it came at a cost. Arch's champion blooms were two highlights among the more than 500 entries at the show, a record in recent years. The ceremony, at Civic House, will see 19 British, six American, two Israeli, along with a German, Burmese, Indian and an Irish woman gain citizenship. coUNcil cEo qUiTS: Nelson City Council chief Keith Marshall has resigned, leaving the role this April. Keith is three years into the job and has overseen major management changes, which were hailed by mayor Aldo Miccio is the wake of the resignation. Aldo also highlighted the financial performance of council over the past few years. Those financial results had enabled councillors to propose the lowest rate rise in 20 years in last year’s draft annual plan. Nelson City Council had posted a surplus of around $42 million for the past year, well up from surpluses in previous years. “As a result, the city is in great financial shape,” says Aldo.

Around 20 kids on school holiday had a day at the beach last week, thanks to a combined school holiday programme. Legend Kids Holiday Programme, based at Nelson College, and Tahunanui Community Centre Holiday Programme joined forces and went to Tahunanui Beach for a fun day out. Activities including swimming, a picnic, sand castle competition and surf lifesaving drills, including the 50 metre run and dive for markers. After each run two people were eliminated. Stoke’s Troy Walker was the eventual winner, beating his brother Luke in the final. Both holiday programmes continue this week.

at Kush and once a month, also on Saturday’s, Baby G’s across the road hosts it’s Salsa night. Together they attract people of all ages to classes, club mixers and dance events. David Bagshaw, a teacher from Tango Passion says Church St is “transformed into a

versation between two people. “When the dancers understand the principles of Tango movement the dance becomes a spontaneous creation and the possibilities are endless,” says Monica. Salsa is “more like a party” according to Annie Giles, who can be credited for bringing Salsa to Nelson and inspiring a sub-culture in the sunshine city. Annie started the first Salsa classes in Nelson 16 years ago. For a time it became the largest group in NZ, with over 100 people rocking up for the beginners classes. Annie says many of those years, based at the Boathouse, were about giving people the opportunity to spend an hour meeting and greeting new people, connecting with others while moving to the Latin Rhythms. “The core of our classes was socialisation, seeing the dance as part of a culture and way of life rather than a set of steps,” says Annie. That ethos has been carried on by many dance students and teachers around the Nelson region. Salsa Buena, a group of expert Salsa teachers and enthusiastic Salsa dancers, are celebrating their first birthday this weekend with a Havana Nights themed party and fundraiser for Women’s Refuge in the Victory Room in Trafalgar Centre from 8pm. The new season of classes is about to step off, with both Tango and Salsa beginners classes commencing in early February. Although the Latin dances are very different on the floor, the styles have combined well in Nelson, says David. “I started out dancing the salsa and eventually moved over to Tango so the two dances complement each other, and you can certainly see that in Nelson’s Latin Quarter and at Cafe Del Tango.”

Film fest attracts record crowd

The hills are alive with the sound of native bird calls once more after over two years of trapping pests. Volunteers, lead by local conservationist Bryce Buckland, have been tramping the tracks to rebait traps that have been diligently removing rats, possums and other vermin from the Grampians since their installation in October 2009. Bryce says that the goal is to increase numbers of native birds such as the fantail and bellbird, and although they are unable to quantify how many birds there are now, he receives feedback that there is vast improvement. “A hawk has been roving over my place,” says Janet Whittingham, data administrator for the group. “It’s just a supposition but I think it’s because it can’t find any rats on the Grampians.” She reports that over 1400 pests, including 631 rats, have been trapped throughout the reserve.

She says locals have begun seeing native birds, even Tuis, around the city and in their gardens for the first time in decades. The effort has attracted a group of around twenty volunteers, who check and rebait the traps over the dozen trap lines regularly. Many of these are family groups, such as the Palmers. Sue Palmer says that her family became involved because it was a cause right on their back doorstep. “It’s giving the kids a sense of social responsibility.” The Palmer’s two children, Lucy and Ben, say they enjoy the family activity and being involved with their community. Volunteers say they’re catching less and less as time goes on, which is a great sign, and that birdsong has increased immeasurably. “Two years ago you just didn’t hear anything,” says Mary Davies, “it’s made a huge difference.” Visit the Birdlife on the Grampains page at www. forestandbird.org.nz to get involved.

Nelson’s summer film festival at the Suter Cinema is enjoying one of its “best years yet,” with screenings of the Metropolitan Operas attracting higher numbers in Nelson than anywhere in the country, and not just on a per capita bases. “Nelson is currently tracking as the number one town in New Zealand with The Magic Flute, which is astounding given the population verses the likes of Auckland and Wellington,” says Andrew Shreeve from Rialto. “The season for showings of the Metropolitan Operas has been extended past their original expiry date around New Zealand, mainly due to the strong demand shown in Nelson.” Louise Egan, promoter for State Cinema, says the festival is a chance to bring Nelson some of the top picks from the International Film Festival, including local, international and foreign language films. “We have done really well this year because we are offering something

a bit different. It is the first year we have had the Operas showing, we’ve got the Bogart films from the 40’s and 50’s and Nelsonians are a getting taste for documentaries too,” says Louise. One film attracting good numbers is ‘When a City Falls’ a Kiwi documentary by Gerard Smythes about the Christchurch earthquakes. Louise describes it as a really uplifting, positive piece of history caught on film and thinks a lot of visitors from Christchurch have taken the opportunity to go to a quake-free cinema while on holiday in Nelson. The Suter Cinema creates a relaxed environment for movie goers, a chance to escape the beach and the hot afternoon sun. “It’s cool, peaceful and quiet, a really nice way to go to a movie and not have to be around heaps and heaps of people,” says Louise. The festival runs until Monday February 6, where you can catch classic cinema, opera and some of the best films from 2011.

Whale hoax just the start Former Nelson College student Guy Williams on duping Paul Henry and life as a comedian for TV3 Phillip Rollo When Guy Williams made his network television debut he wasn’t Guy Williams at all. He was Jay Pryor, a pro-whaling libertarian. Guy, who works for TV3’s The Jono Project, formerly Jono’s New Show, was in charge of a skit called Quest for Fame where he hoped to make the show’s host, Jono Pryor, as famous as possible. A press release, containing the details of nonprofit organisation, Commercial Whaling New Zealand, was created, along with a fake website that Guy couldn’t be bothered making so it said “website under construction”. It was designed to fool a small community newspaper. Instead it was picked up by Fairfax Media’s Sunday News. TVNZ then followed suit and wanted to bring Jay on its top morning show, Breakfast, to speak about the group’s support for commercial whaling. Guy lasted five minutes with controversial host Paul Henry and says the skit went much better than they had first hoped. TVNZ filmed the interview at 6am, and it wasn’t until the afternoon that they found out it was all a hoax, a midday news bulletin later. “It was a classic case of the whole thing working too well. It was supposed to be a little laugh and it ended up on the front page of the [New Zealand] Herald. The whole thing was a massive shambles

To have me on the show legitimately is pretty exciting.” Guy is currently a writer for Sticky TV, is a regular contributor to Drew and Shannon Live and will feature on TV3’s upcoming sitcom Hounds. Work on another season of The Jono Project will commence this week, although it is undecided whether it will be in the same format as 2011. Guy has been nominated for the Billy T award, the most prestigious accolade in New Zealand comedy. It is given to the top up and coming stand-up comic in the country for the past year. If he wins he will tour with the Comedy Convoy, which makes a stop-off in Nelson. It will be the first time Guy has ever performed in his home-town.

Search continues for missing teen Two years on, police are still searching for information that will help locate missing Nelson teenager Leo Lipp-Neighbours. Today marks the second anniversary since the 19 year-old disappeared on January 24, 2010. Since that time police have followed up numerous lines of inquiry and possible sightings of Leo’s distinctive yellow Toyota Corolla, but are yet to receive one positive piece of infor-

mation. Detective senior sergeant Wayne McCoy says his team had not given up in its search for clues into Leo’s disappearance. A familiar mountain to climb Andrew Board Nelson’s top mountain bikers are hoping a home track advantage will help them earn a spot on the podium this weekend. Kieran Bennett and Reuben Olorenshaw are part of a Nelson-based team founded by Kieran that is aiming to be amongst the frontrunners in the elite class of the New Zealand Nationals. They are the only two Nelson riders competing in the class and will team up with the North Island’s Lawrence Cawte in the Zerode team. Other Nelson riders are competing in

other classes including under 17 and under 19, masters, senior mens and senior womens. Kieran is in hot form this season, currently lying fourth in the National Series which continued in Christchurch last weekend. But the one-off Nationals is the perfect opportunity for Kieran and Reuben to win the championship. Kieran won it when it was last in Nelson in 2007 and Reuben is a former under 17 and under 19 national champion. Kieran says he has been riding the championship course up the Brook Valley for the past year and a half and feels comfortable on it but says it will be no

They were like any ordinary young boys, playing with remote controlled cars in the driveway. But as they grew up, so did the toys; and now Alan Simpson and Mark Bidwell are the masters of gas powered buggies that can reach speeds in excess of 70kph. Members of the Nelson Radio Controlled Car Club, the pair have seen the club progress in leaps and bounds in the past three years with the completion of a new radio controlled car specific track at Richmond Park. The club has been going for 25 years and was held at the Brightwater BMX Track previously and using a space near the Nelson Airport before that. But because bikes wreck radio controlled car tracks, they sought their own facility. Currently there are 36 paid permanent members, although the club usually pulls in around 10 visitors each race day. Club president Alan says his love for motorsport is what got him into driving radio controlled cars, and it’s also an entry into mechanics. “When I was little I always toyed with little ones. As I progressed as a teenager I learnt about places like this where you’d meet a lot of other friends,” he says. “It’s great for the young ones to learn basic mechanics that will help them in the future with their real cars.” Others in the club say it’s an economic way to be involved in motorsport. To be one of the top drivers in the country, it would only cost a couple of thousand dollars each year. Just days after he was named in the training squad for the New Zealand Sevens team, James Lowe was cautioned by the New Zealand Rugby Union that his focus should be on the New Zealand Under-20 team ahead of the IRB Junior World Championship in South Africa. James pulled out of the training squad, ending his hopes of earning a contract for the 2012 IRB Sevens Circuit. Five players were deemed unavailable, resulting in another five replacements, one being Tasman Mako Shane Christie. James is one of three local players involved with the New Zealand Under-20 training squad, along with Mike Wells and Reuben Northover, although the final squad has yet to be decided. James hopes the NZRU’s decision has increased his chances of making the age-grade side, which will be selected following further training camps.

Nelson riders clean up at Tasman skate tour Trent Luff only needed one point in Richmond to cement first place on the Tasman Skatepark Tour – he took five. The Nelson skateboarder was named winner of the Tasman Skatepark Tour in front of a large Jubilee Park crowd on Saturday. The tour took to all of the skateparks within the Tasman region including Mapua, Motueka, Brightwater, Takaka and Tapawera. This year’s tour was the first time scooter riders were included, and saw the return of the leader board which saw competitors collect points at each comp. It was the biggest ever turnout for the tour, with organisers saying the major reason behind that was the popular inclusion of scooters, which seem to have taken off in recent months. Leo Calcasola, also of Nelson, won both the overall scooter and BMX competitions.
