Buy-up of the arts in NCC plan Nelson ratepayers will soon own the city’s most valuable art buildings, or the “jewels of Nelson” as they have been described, but not everyone is happy. Ownership of the Theatre Royal and Nelson School of Music, along with an upgrade to the Trafalgar Centre and a new cycling velodrome at Saxton Field are key highlights in the long term plan adopted by Nelson City Council last week. Another talking point is the rate increase of 5.6 per cent next year and the continued rise in debt, estimated to be $130 million in 2022, but that is down from the original projection of $170 million. More than 800 submissions were received and the 12 councillors listened to around 200 residents speak in the council chamber to support their view.

Submissions ranged from those supportive of certain projects to others worried about debt levels and rate increases, says NCC. The average rate rise next year will be 5.6 per cent, while the projected increases over the next ten years range from an average of 2.1 to 5.1 per cent. The council confirmed in the plan that it is to take over the building ownership of both the Nelson School of Music and the Theatre Royal, if the trust board of the former agrees to a deal that will see the council pay $2 million for the earthquake strengthening it needs. “This will be like a landlord role, we will own the buildings but their day-to-day operation will remain in the hands of the community, as it always has been,” says

Surviving another scooter challenge The challenge is to drive from Nelson city to the Marlborough Sounds in four days. It sounds simple enough, but there are plenty of buts. First, it must be done on a 50cc scooter, over some of the toughest off-road tracks in the top of the South Island. Then you must compete in challenges each day against the other riders with the winner raising cash for charity. Finally, you must do it with a smile on your face. Although founder and organiser of the Survivor Scooter Challenge, Jason Monopoli, admits he’s never seen anyone struggle through the last one. The Survivor Scooter Challenge is now in its third year and will be bigger than ever. It’s a fun challenge, driving a 50cc scooter off-road and with great camaraderie. Jason started the event in New Zealand after competing in the Australian Postie Bike Challenge, where hundreds of people drive through the desert on a 50cc scooter. Since then it has grown from a few mates the first year to a maximum of 15 riders last year and 20 this year. Jason says he has already had confirmations from some riders for this year’s event but would like to see more people get involved and urges anyone who

Council takes arts ownership FROM PAGE 1 But Nelson Residents Association vice chair, Kerry Neal, says taking ownership is a “terrible” move by the council. “Irresponsibly rules. We have a succession of these trusts that have walked away from their obligations and the cost for ratepayers will only increase. It’s pretty sad for our city.” Aldo says ownership of the buildings means Nelson’s key assets – along with the Trafalgar Centre and Trafalgar Park – will have one strategic direction and marketing plan in the

future. “The Theatre Royal and Nelson School of Music are the jewels of Nelson, they are what make up the fabric of our community and they, along with other facilities, are a huge asset for us if we can get them working effectively. This is a fantastic day in Nelson’s history, it’s what sets us apart from other centres.” The long term plan also gives the nod to the upgrade of the northern end of the Trafalgar Centre and upgrading and enhancing the lower reaches of the Maitai Walkway. Aldo says he is happy with the

plan and the mix of projects with expenditure. “I consider this to be a real achievement for the council. It has to manage the delicate balance of what our city needs with what its residents want, while continuing to take financial responsibility. We are moving ahead with exciting projects like the regional velodrome at Saxton Field, which attracted so much support, while also giving some care and attention to much loved older facilities in our city. These facilities make Nelson a place where talent wants to live,” he says.

Free parking returns to CBD, but be quick

Free car parking in Nelson’s CBD every Tuesday during winter has returned today, but for a very limited time. Nelson City Council and Uniquely Nelson have worked together to bring back the scheme aimed at increasing the number of shoppers in the city during a traditionally quiet retail day. The promotion was run for the first time last year and the council has agreed to run it again from Tuesday 24 July to Tuesday 4 September, a little over one month. Mayor Aldo Miccio says the council had a positive response to the initiative last year. “We’re pleased to again offer this incentive to bring people into the city centre at what can be a quieter time or year.” Cathy Madigan, manager of Uniquely Nelson, says it’s a welcome initiative to encourage locals to visit the city during winter. “Free parking was a huge hit last year. Follow up research showed that people definitely responded well to it and many planned their weekly shop-

ping around being in the city on Tuesdays.” Although there will be no charge at the meters, shoppers need to be aware that current time limits of 1, 2 or 3 hours (depending on where you park) still apply to discourage the parks being used for all day parking. The council’s parking wardens will still be enforcing the time limits, so people are reminded to check on the meter and parking signage to confirm how long they can stay. Any other parking and vehicle offences (such as WOF’s, registrations and safety issues) will continue to be enforced. The area to which this applies includes the entire area where commuters currently pay for parking in the CBD including the four parking squares. For details on locations and time limits visit www.nelsoncitycouncil.co.nz/parking. Please note that free parking will be available in the privately owned car parks in Fashion Island off Hardy St. It does not apply to any other privately owned or long term leased car parks.

Flash mob stops shoppers

The leisurely Saturday Market came alive with an unexpected Zumba dance party on the weekend. Onlookers crowded to watch as local instructor Lynne Painter skipped out into the midst of shoppers and broke into routine, dancing to the song Good Feeling by Flo Rider. Lynne was soon followed by several dozen students from her Zumba classes. The Zumba instructor has done lots of shows, but Lynne said she wanted to try something a little different. “Some of my class wouldn’t want to do shows,

but they’ll do a flash mob,” says Lynne. This was the first flash mob Lynne has coordinated, and she says she is overjoyed with how it went and with the response of the onlookers. “It was great. As soon as music started, there was so much energy, everyone was getting involved. Children, over 70s, they were all rocking.” Lynne says she has already been approached by her students and spectators alike, asking if she has plans for another. “I think we will. Richmond is another area I want to do,” says Lynne. A video of the flash mob is available on Youtube.

Thousands help bless fishing fleets

Nelson’s fishing fleet has once again been blessed in the leadup to the hoki season, with thousands turning up for the twelfth annual Blessing of the Fleet ceremony. The crowds were entertained by the Nelson Brass Band, Nelson Male Voice Choir and the Nelson Christian Academy Choir, with fish, chips and scallops available for just $3 a box. It was, however, also a day to remember those lost at sea. Jude Wells, who lost her husband Barry in 1999, laid a wreath upon the ocean on behalf of the families of all those lost at sea. An ode of remembrance was played by piper Perry Smith, followed by minute’s silence for those lost at sea as well as those currently working on the fishing boats. In a break from tradition, the ceremony was overseen by four clergymen; Bishop Richard Ellena, Reverend Jeff Cotton, Father David Gruscol and Archdeacon Andy Joseph. Bishop Richard’s plans to go overseas were cancelled, meaning that both he and Archdeacon Andy Joseph, who

had stepped up to the role, attended the ceremony. “The only addition we had there was Andy Joseph and I thought he played the part very well indeed,” says Mike Smith, spokesperson for the Seafarer’s Memorial Trust. Even after twelve years of involvement the event still brings up powerful emotions, says Mike. “When Jude Wells placed the wreath in the water she broke down on the pavement, and there were tears in the crowd. I think you could see the emotion. When the Bishop of Nelson

Twenty-six per cent of the working population of Nelson is involved with the fishing industry, one way or another. It’s so relevant to Nelson because it’s Australasia’s biggest fishing port by far,” says Mike. Gearing up for art expo

Nic Foster carries artwork into the Trafalgar Centre for this weekend’s Nelson Art Expo. Photo: Andrew Board. Nelson is taking its reputation as an arts capital rather seriously, preparing to host a massive art expo that organisers hope will lead the way for South Island artists. Nic Foster says the concept of art expos is big in Europe and other centres in New Zealand and it was about time Nelson followed suit. “We have so many wonderful artists here in Nelson and this will be a great

way for them to sell some work and get noticed by dealers.” Fifteen art dealers from the North Island will be flown down for the expo which will include the works of 98 artists, most of those from Nelson. The Nelson Art Expo will be held at the Trafalgar Centre and Nic says an onsite cafe and other activities will hopefully create a “buzz” around the event. “We want people to come along and en-

TUESDAY 24 July 2012

The five things people should consider before pleading guilty to a traffic charge: Sometimes ordinary people end up in situations they never thought that they would face. Through a small accident they end up before the Courts. If this happens to you (and it can happen to anyone) there are five points you should think about: 1. Do you have a defence? It is really important to talk thoroughly with someone who understands the law on this point. Sometimes what you think is a perfect defence simply isn’t. A good example of this is drinking during a delay between driving and being tested. Some people think that if they downed a few beers in the interim, and they can prove it, that it will get them off the charge. Usually it won’t create a defence. Other times something you may not have considered can give rise to a defence to the charge – such as the police not providing you with an opportunity to talk to a lawyer through the breath testing procedures or the police giving you an opinion on whether you should elect a blood test or not. If you enter a not guilty plea it can mean a more serious sentencing outcome if you are convicted so it is important to consider a defence thoroughly. 2. Was there any special reason for the offending? Where special reasons for a driving offence exist it can sometimes justify no disqualification. The typical example is where someone is disqualified from driving and there is a medical emergency. However other examples can crop up: A defendant faced a charge of driving whilst suspended (due to demerit points). He was very fortunate to have secured an internship through a recruitment programme but the job was 100kms from where he lived. His ride never came to pick him up and left him stranded. He made a foolish decision (partially due to cultural reasons) to drive to work and was stopped by police. Fortunately the court accepted that there were special reasons and he was not disqualified meaning he could continue to get to and from work. Another defendant faced a charge of refusing to provide a blood sample. He had been drinking at a hotel and afterwards was simply sitting in the car with the ignition and the heating running to keep warm while waiting for a taxi. This could have been a defence if he had complied with the breath testing procedures. He didn’t and objected to the fact that he was legally required to first submit a breath test, then blood test. The police did not obtain a sample and he was charged with refusing to provide a blood sample. The court accepted that his mistake of law was a special reason and he was not disqualified (which was important to him as his driver’s licence was crucial to his employment). 3. Is there a more appropriate charge? This can make all the difference. If someone is facing a sustained loss of traction charge or dangerous driving charge it might be more appropriate that they are convicted of a careless driving charge. The difference can be a mandatory disqualification for six months versus no conviction and no disqualification at all because of eligibility for the police diversion scheme. Another point is that it may not be worthwhile defending a charge of sustained loss of traction if you argue that you did not do a “skid” but accept that you accelerated rapidly away in an “excessive exhibition of speed.” The consequences of a conviction are nearly identical and the police can lay a new charge at any time within 6 months of the offence coming to light. 4. What is the most important thing to you? You might think that the most important thing that a person has to lose is their licence. This is not always the case. A defendant I acted for a number of years ago faced a rather serious charge of careless driving causing injury. She was in her 80’s and it was the only time she had been in trouble. She had resigned to the fact that she shouldn’t drive again. The most important thing

for her was to avoid the stress of the Courtroom. This cannot be done on a careless causing injury charge as it is not a fine-only offence. The police accepted a reduction in the charge to simple careless use which can only result in a fine on the basis that she stopped driving permanently. The benefit to her was that she did not have to attend court and the sentencing could proceed in her absence. Another defendant was a young man with strong aspirations of joining the police force. He faced a charge of driving with excess breath alcohol over the youth limit. His licence was nowhere near as important to him as his ability to join the police. The only conviction that operates to ban a person from applying from the police is an excess breath alcohol conviction. The court was persuaded to enter no conviction against him following a guilty plea (although he accepted a longer than usual disqualification from driving). Certain convictions can result in your car being sold by the Court or indefinite disqualification. This often comes down to the timing of when a previous conviction was entered. It pays to be very careful in checking the timing of other offences in your criminal history to avoid unexpected consequences. 5. Are you eligible for a limited licence? Most people are aware that if they get convicted of an offence that carries a disqualification and extreme hardship will result (for instance they will lose their job) that they can have a limited licence issued by the Court. Different types of convictions can give rise to different disqualifications and different rules apply to different convictions. For example if a defendant is disqualified for excess breath alcohol then they have a stand down period for 28 days before they can apply for the limited licence. If they are disqualified for sustained loss of traction then there is no stand down period and they can apply straight away. If there is a stand down period it’s best to organise a limited licence during the stand down period. If there is no stand down period then it’s VERY important to get working on the limited licence as soon as possible (if the defendant is pleading guilty). If someone is suspended due to excess demerit points then it depends on when they get served with the suspension notice. A lawyer can sometimes assist with the timing so that a limited licence can be filed as soon as service occurs. If a defendant has a relevant conviction within the last five years then they won’t be eligible for a limited licence so it’s important to check this thoroughly. Finally Traffic law can be a tricky area with lots of little quirky fish hooks. If you do face a charge then it’s a good idea to have a chat with a lawyer who is familiar with that area of law.

Simon Whitehead from Pitt & Moore is available to advise on any traffic prosecution that you might face.

Nelson’s Ngaire is NZ’s oldest Olympian Andrew Board The last time the Olympic Games were in London, Ngaire Galloway was a 23 year old national swimming champion and preparing to take the stand for her first qualifying swim of the 1948 games. And she was almost beside herself. Never before had she raced in front of so many people and with no coaching or support staff of any sort she wound herself up with feelings of nerves and not wanting to let down her country. Then, as her name was called, the six other New Zealanders in the Olympic team, all men, stood in the stands of the swimming complex and did a haka. It brought the announcement of the competitors to a standstill and strange looks from spectators. And for Ngaire Galloway, the last surviving member of the New Zealand team from those games, it almost tipped her “over the edge” but gave her an immense sense of pride in her country. “I don’t think anyone else had seen one before and they all must have thought ‘what’s this racket all about?’” She finished third in the race, qualified for the semi-finals but did not qualify for the final. Sixty-four years on Ngaire sat and listened to Olympic champion Sarah Ulmer last week as part of an Olympic road-show

It’s Black & White

promoted by ANZ Bank in the lead up to this year’s games, also in London. Sarah spoke about her nerves before competing and her tears as other kiwi Olympians performed a haka – holding up the medal ceremony at Athens in 2004. Ngaire says it shows that despite technology, better coaching, better support and better training environments some things don’t change. “You still want to do well for your country, without question, and I think it shows how important it is to have these sports physicists. I wish I had one.” Ngaire was based in Dunedin when she qualified for the games, she trained in the morning before her day job as a secretary and in her lunch break. She was a New Zealand champion and needed to better the time of 72 seconds over 110 yards (100 metres) to qualify. She did that in a pool by herself and with three time keepers watching on but had to wait three weeks before the Olympic Selection Committee confirmed she would be going to the Games. Before leaving for the six week boat trip she was engaged to Ken, who would later become a doctor in Nelson for many decades. Because there was no swimming pool on the boat the crew lined a container for her, which was slightly bigger than a bath, she could drop herself in it and practise her kicking. Weights were jimmied up with pullies so she could pull on them to practice her stroke. When she arrived in England she was separated from her team-

mates, because men and women could not mix and had to find a pool to train in as the team manager had failed to do so. Fortunately she found a place swimming alongside the Great Britain team. In the leadup to the Games she won the English Swimming Championships but could not replicate her good form at the Olympics. She says walking out in front of 83,000 people at a packed Wembley stadium for the opening ceremony was one of the highlights of her life. The games were officially opened by King George VI and the choir music was outstanding, but walk-

ing out with the six other New Zealanders when 83,000 Brits erupted in gratitude to New Zealand's contribution in World War 2 was something else says Ngaire. “I’ll never forget it, never. We just tingled all over, it was incredible.” She has since been to two other Olympic Games as a spectator, in 1956 in Melbourne, and in 2000 in Sydney. She says she will be getting up early to watch the games and will be keeping an eye out for favourites including Val Adams, Nick Wills, the rowers and another Nelson girl competing at her first Games, Blackstick Anita Punt.

The deadline for funding applications to the Nelson Bays Community Foundation is fast approaching. The cutoff to apply for the first grants to be distributed by the organisation, to registered charities whose activities are focussed in Tasman and Nelson, is July 31. Launched in March 2010, NBCF invests

money raised from donations, bequests and endowments and distributes the income earned back into the community. While the Charitable Trust’s initial focus has been on growing these funds, having received several endowments in the last two years, they are now in a position to make their first distributions to the community.

“It is important to recognise that NBCF is in its early building phase so this first year distributions will be modest,” says NBCF chair, John Rollston. “However this is a very exciting step in the development of the foundation." Local charities should visit www.nbcf. org.nz/receiving and complete the application form by 5pm on July 31.

New face for advertisers

‘A dragon please’ says delivery instructions Joanna Martin filled out the online form on the Briscoe’s website, typed in the product purchase number and her address, then she got to the part that said “delivery instructions”. She wrote: “Please leave on the back porch… and a picture of a dragon would be awesome”. The result? Her cupcake holders arrived in a brown box with the printed out picture of a dragon on the side. Joanna, who works in Stoke, says she couldn’t believe it. “My flatmate was home, she called me and said ‘um your package from Briscoe’s is here and there’s a dragon on the side of the box.’ I let out a little squeal and said ‘that is awesome’.” Joanna says it’s not the first time she has heard of it before, with pizza boxes another common request. “I saw it on a website and thought it was pretty cool so when I bought something online I thought ‘oh, I’ll give it a go’.” She has since emailed Briscoes to express her gratitude but received an automated message back. “I hope I didn’t get anyone in trouble because I was so happy. It was really cool whoever did it.”

New advertising representative for the Nelson Weekly, Scott McMillan.

Nelson Weekly has a new advertising representative, employed to help local businesses market themselves through the region’s only locally owned community newspaper. Scott McMillan replaces David Ogg, who has moved to Australia with his family to help care for his sick father. Scott says he is excited about his new role, helping businesses get the most out of their advertising dollar. “I’ve enjoyed my first few weeks at the Weekly and I’ve been getting out as often as I can to meet local business owners and managers. One thing I’ve been struck by already is how many have al-

ready used the Nelson Weekly to advertise their business and how many have had great success with the paper. I’m looking forward to that continuing.” Scott has a long and successful career in sales and moved from Auckland with his partner, who is originally from Nelson and pregenant with their first child. Scott says he is enjoying Nelson’s outdoors and his first taste of the media industry. To talk to Scott about advertising your business in the Nelson Weekly call him on 548 4949 or email scott@nelson weekly.co.nz.

Fertiliser fundraiser on again

Ross Sharpe owns 12 Ford Model A cars. All Ford owners are welcome to drive to Rabbit Island next weekend, July 29, to celebrate company founder Henry Ford’s birthday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

A dozen Fords is not enough Ross Sharpe’s obsession with Ford Model A motor vehicles began 17 years ago and it shows no signs of slowing down. Ahead of next weekend’s birthday celebrations for the late Henry Ford, Ross will open up his garage and have a dozen different Model As to choose from, before driving out to Rabbit Island along with hundreds of the region’s other Ford owners. The event is organised by the Nelson Classic Ford Car Club and will be held next Sunday, July 29, from 11am. Ross owns 12 Model A cars, the first of which took him three trailer loads to bring back from Takaka. Now the Richmond man sources them from all over the country. He opens up his shed for members of the public to visit his cars. Some of them have been found in sheds, unused for decades. So it was no surprise when Ross came

across four dead rats in the back of one of them. “I collect all kinds of things. I’m just like a weka, I collect anything shiny,” he says. “I love the adrenalin rush of what I call a barn find. In one instance a lady drove her Model A into the barn, turned the key off and left it there for 20 years.” The earliest models that Ross owns date back to 1928, the year the Model A was first released. Ross only registers two of the cars at a time and some of them are still not ready to be driven on the road again. “I’ve only restored one of them. I like to buy them and tidy them up.” One day Ross hopes to have his own museum for the cars but at this stage they will remain in the largest shed he can get council consent for. “It’s the biggest one you’ll get on a residential section, people still don’t understand how I got it and neither do I.” Henry Ford was born on July 30, 1863.

Winners never quit and quitters never win, add it up.

Victoria University of Wellington invites you to a free public lecture to be presented by Professor Tim Naish, Director of the Antarctic Research Centre and Associate Professor Marc Wilson, Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology.

9 billion people, global warming and climate change

By the year 2050 it is estimated that the world’s population will be as high as nine billion, and that readily recoverable oil and gas reserves will have run out. As a consequence of our unsustainable use of fossil fuel, Earth’s surface will be 2°C warmer - above the United Nations threshold for “dangerous human interference with the climate system”. I will discuss what this will mean for melting of the polar ice sheets, global sea-level rise and the trend towards more frequent catastrophic storm events. Professor Tim Naish is the Director of the Antarctic Research Centre at Victoria University and a Principle Scientist at GNS Science. His current research contributes to the understanding of how continental margins respond to climate and sea-level change, specifically focusing on the role of ice sheets and Antarctica in the global climate system.

If it’s so obvious, why doesn’t everyone believe in climate change? Who believes in climate change? What is the psychology behind believing (or not believing) in climate change? Using data from two large New Zealand surveys, I’ll talk about some of the personality, political, pathological, and social factors associated with climate change belief. I’ll also talk about some of the biases in decision-making, which means it is very difficult to change strongly-held opinions either way. Associate Professor Marc Wilson’s research focuses on the application of social psychological theory to important issues. He is a highly regarded researcher and teaching practitioner who has received a National Tertiary Teaching Award and Victoria’s Tertiary Teaching Excellence Award.

Wednesday 1 August – 5.30pm‒7.45pm Rutherford Hotel Trafalgar Square Nelson If you would like to attend, please email rsvp@vuw.ac.nz with ‘Nelson Lecture’ in the subject line or phone 04-472 1000 by Friday 27 July. What can customers expect from your product? Our motto is simple, clean, dry firewood at wholesale prices. We have the largest shed storage facility in the Nelson region which helps us maintain a drier product, even in the middle of winter. We have had so many customers that have rung disappointed with firewood delivered from other suppliers that is wet, poor value for money and they are left with a wheelbarrow load of rubbish in their driveway once they have stacked it.

Do you sell different varieties of firewood? This year we have sold a variety of wood including macro, gum, pine, old man pine and d.fir. (Although the only stock we have left this winter is blue gum and pine). What sets you apart from other firewood companies? As well as providing a variety of firewood we also do tree removal and specialized tree work. What would you recommend to customers when purchasing wood? We are happy to sell mixed loads and having a mix of soft wood such as pine with hard wood is a good idea to get the best out of your fire.

Special Olympian realises artistic dream Special Olympics Nelson athlete Chris Tilley is set to realise a life-long dream of holding his own art exhibition this month. The exhibition, called ‘Passion Exploding’ will be held at the Refinery Artspace Gallery in Nelson from next Monday. On display will be 18 artworks Chris has painted over the past two years. “This exhibition is something I have been working towards for a long time,” says Chris. “I’ve been painting ever since I was really young, and I try to take an hour out of every day so I can paint. “My paintings are of nature, mainly landscapes and animals. The landscapes sometimes include weather or volcanoes. It’s all stuff I have created in my head or taken from photos and places I’ve been,” says the 25 year old. This month’s exhibition is not the first dream Chris has been determined to make a reality. A talented swimmer and powerlifter with the Special Olympics Nelson Club, Chris represented New Zealand in powerlifting at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China, where he won three gold medals and one silver.

“Going to the Games was a new adventure for me and such an interesting experience,” says Chris. Chris is also on the Special Olympics athletes committee and last year was selected to be a Special Olympics Global Messenger, which involves speaking to community groups about the positive impact Special Olympics has on people with intellectual disabilities. For now, the most important social occasion on Chris’ mind is opening night of his exhibition on July 23. “I’m looking forward to the night. Most of my whanau will be there and it’s a great opportunity to get dressed up in my suit and tie.”

Each week photos from the Nelson Provincial Museum’s “glass plate” collection will run in Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly in an effort to find out more about them. Right: George Elliot? Local Man Embraces International Standards You may know Tom Jeffrey from his days with Marist Rugby, Tasman Wheelers, or his long standing management role with Sealord, or he may have had children at school with your children. What you may not know is that Tom Jeffrey recently purchased the existing Enviro Clean and Restoration business in Nelson and Marlborough. As a proud Tasman man, Tom wanted to make a difference in the local community by personally owning a business that would contribute to the wellbeing of people. Tom is excited to work with George Pope who has been with Enviro for five years and shares the same passion for going to work each day and making a difference in people’s lives. With Tom’s technical background and some 20 years of customer care, Enviro’s national team were thrilled to welcome Tom to the nationwide Enviro family. Enviro, New Zealand’s leading carpet cleaning and restoration company carefully selects business owners who understand the commitment to international standards within an industry. Enviro lives and breathes its commitment to the industry’s qualifications known as IICRC. It is these standards which make the difference as to whether or not people are healthy and safe in their homes/work after Enviro has helped them with a flood, damage from a fire, a meth lab, sewage backflow, blood spills, chemical spills, trauma scene, mould remediation, tear gas, hoarder situations and norovirus decontamination. In these emergency, disaster and hazardous situations Tom, George and the rest of the team are on call 24/7. The IICRC standards also apply to Enviro’s carpet cleaning, hard floor cleaning, upholstery, leather cleaning and pest control services. Tom’s prima-

ry focus in delivering these services to homeowners, business owners and large commercial clients is to have people understand that the cleaning of floors and upholstery is not just a matter of presentation, but of huge importance to their family and employees' health. If you want to reduce asthma, bacterial and viral infections in the home or work place, reduce employee sick days or protect your family immune systems, then have your floors cleaned for health, not looks alone. The only way to clean for health is to use the hot water extraction method. This method involves truck mounted machines that have the ability to heat the water to a level that will kill bacteria and virus. Enviro only uses this hot water extraction method along with cleaning solutions that have the international CRI Gold Seal of Approval and are biodegradable. Tom is thrilled to know that every day he and his team are improving the health of local families and employees. As the only member of the New Zealand Carpet Cleaning Association in Nelson and Marlborough, Tom has access to the latest technology and scientific developments through the research undertaken by the Enviro group across New Zealand. Tom and his team plan to make sure that the Tasman community continues to benefit locally from this involvement. So if it is a carpet stain at home or work that’s been bugging you, or you realise it is time to take care of the health of your family and employees by cleaning your carpets, or you suspect a mould problem or need advice about a possible p lab or want to ask to be placed on our emergency response list in case of a larger scale disaster, then give Tom a call on 03 548 2831 Business Update. SPORT The Harbour Master’s

diary

• Three container vessels, a fruit ship, a general carrier, a methanol tanker, a big car carrier, a dredge moved around the port, the cement ship, a tug from Gisborne, and thirteen large fishing vessels moved around the port. • It was with a great deal of pleasure that I took the Harbour Masters boat out for the start of this year’s programme and when outside the cut I saw two people paddling an outrigger. Being the good guy I am I thought I would just mosey over and say hello (and check that lifejackets were being worn or carried.) Before I was even 50 metres away a cheeky smile and a lifejacket was proudly displayed. Good on you girls. • The Blessing of the Fleet fireworks occurred Friday night. Many thanks to Port Nelson for the fireworks and the team from Talleys that made it possible. It was a great display. • The Blessing on Saturday was the typically moving ceremony that it is and it was gratifying to all the fishermen and women to see the crowd enjoy the day. There are many to praise and thank on such a day however • I think special mention is warranted for the girls that braved the cold waters to do the man overboard drill. Thanks girls, well done. Would you know what to do if someone fell overboard? Do you know how to retrieve someone from the water?

Rabbits win league grand final The Stoke Cobras started with a hiss but in the end couldn't match the speed of Tasman rugby league's new champions, the Richmond Rabbits. Stoke were the two-time defending champions of the Tasman Rugby League Smokefree Bin Inn Cup but had already lost twice to the Rabbits this season and once again couldn't match its fitness late in the game. A bi-partisan crowd filed into Trafalgar Park for the match, each with equal support from the stands. Stoke was the first to score thanks to an overlap on the right flank allowing Hoani Tauwhare to dot down. The try wasn't converted but the Cobras found several gaps in the Rabbits defence and mid-way through the first half scored a run away try to give them a handy 8-0 lead with just 10 minutes remaining in the half. But the Rabbits came back into the game

Stoke grabs underdog tag ahead of final A dazzling try by right winger Brenton Connell set it up and the steady boot of Jacob Beleski sealed it but Stoke will put its Car Company division one semifinal win down to plenty of heart. Heart alone might not be enough for this weekend’s grand final though. Accessman Stoke will meet the highly impressive and highly fancied Galbraith Group Nelson in this Saturday’s final at Trafalgar Park after it beat Huia 24-9 to remain undefeated in 2012. The final will be played at Trafalgar Park from 2.30pm. In Tahuna, it was a ferocious contest up front and Stoke’s tight five Ray Packer, Max Glossop, Mike Tyler, Steve Kerr and Ben Douglas fought for every inch, which proved the difference between the two sides, with Stoke winning 24-19 against a very strong Wakatu Hotel Marist side. This ascendency laid the platform for the first try. After ensuing rucks, the ever-present halfback Shawn Begg angled his run off the ruck to find the rampaging number 8 Tevta Koloamatangi running a fantastic attacking line to break the defence and run 40 metres to score, which

Jacob converted. Both teams traded penalties and Stoke headed into half time with a 13-6 lead. Following the break Marist started to claw back at the lead, adding a penalty, then finding its way to the tryline, adding a conversion, to take the lead 16-13. The Stoke pack was reinvigorated by the introduction of former All Black prop Campbell Johnston and blindside flanker Sam Dempster. From a midfield ruck Shawn made a well-timed clean break to find a flying left winger Chris Little looming on his outside in support who in turn combined with a well-timed pass to the fast finishing right winger Brenton Connell who dived into the corner to take Stoke back into the lead 18-16 with ten to play. Marist struck right away with a penalty goal to take back the lead 19-18 with just six minutes to play. From the kickoff Stoke forward’s and backs combined to forage deep into the Marist half and were finally rewarded with a penalty and the lead. Stoke used the same strategy again from the kickoff again – same result, and the win.

Brenton Connell celebrates his second half try with team mates as Stoke beat Marist in Saturday's semi final.

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club

Nelson Under 13's Lauren Hippolite stretchs for the ball against Buller A at Saxton Field on Sunday. Photo: Andrew Board.

Nelson teams excel at age group tournament Nelson teams excelled at the Nelson Age Group Tournament held at Saxton Courts on Sunday. Under 17, Under 15, Under 13 and the respective Development teams competed against Marlborough, Buller, Golden Bay and Motueka. Nelson Under 15 continued its good form after placing third in Wellington at Queen’s Birthday Weekend and commendable performances in Blenheim at the Top of the South Tournament. It won the Phyllis Mansfield Cup with a resounding 47-12 win over Motueka Under 17. An all round team performance resulted in a 37-27 win over Marlborough with The Anderson Cup at stake. In the Motueka encounter, coach Kathryn Orange got every one of her players on court with Kate Bolton putting in an incredible performance at goal shoot, converting 29 from 34. Kate is in her first year of netball and shows great promise in the sport. In the Marlborough game Abby Franklin was called in to bolster the shooting ranks in the absence of sharp shooter Katie Ditzel. Abby slotted in nicely with goal shoot Poppy Restieax and quickly developed a nice understanding. Abby converted 19 from 23 while Poppy shot 15 from 21, with Kate adding the extras in the final couple of minutes of the game. Makaila Powick lead her team by example, she was a superb link through court and found the circle edge repeatedly for the optimum feeding position. Circle defenders Merekara McGuinnietty and Georgia Davies were standouts – Merekara got a number of tips at the centre pass and pulled in four well timed intercepts. Georgia rebounded strongly and displayed a keen eye when out hunting. Although not its best performance Nelson accounted for the Under 15 Development team 28-23. Goal defence, Sarah Robinson came in for special praise from her coach as she hauled in five intercepts. Caitlyn Delany was another to impress, more accustomed to play in the defensive circle she had an outstanding game with the

WD bib. Caitlyn read the play well to gain several deflections, is a natural hunter and is another with considerable potential. It was three from three for the Nelson Under 13 team when it totally dominated Buller A in all facets of play, winning 41-6. Coach, Mandy Whiting was in a position to change her players at every quarter and test combinations for the team’s next outing in Ashburton next month. Goal shoot, Pip Dwyer impressed with nice movement and finished the game with a 91per cent goal average. Nelson had drawn with Marlborough at the Top of the South Tournament so was keen to go one better and claim their neighbour's scalp. There was considerable turnover ball which was not always converted, however once it got into the shooters hands it more often than not resulted in points on the board. Kate Hand led her troops well and had an outstanding game at goal keep. She read the play well to gather in numerous intercepts, she “boxed out” to gain the rebound to deny the second shot and had a formidable partnership with Lauren Davenhill. Nelson went on to win 25-22 to claim the Primary Cup. Nelson was tested in the opening stages when it met Nelson Under 13 Development team and the teams were tied at 3 all at the first break. Once again there was a fair amount of turnover ball, however it was the A team which settled better with centre Hana Tava delivering some quality ball to her shooters Pip and Taylor Boeyen. The flow increased after the major break with Hana moving to WA and Megan Stack being introduced at centre. Megan was the pivotal link and bought the ball through court well. Although the A team won 23-17, the Development team could be well pleased with its performance. Coach Whiting was happy with how her girls have developed as her team has a definite “league of nations” look about it as only two of the ten girls play for the same school team.

Over recent weeks there has been some great weather to get out and do some winter fishing. D’Urville Island seems to be the most popular destination. Even more so with recent episodes on Matt Watson’s TV fishing show, revealing the awesome fishery we have in the Top of the South. On Saturday there were about 35 boats fishing the kingfish and snapper grounds within a stone’s throw of each other in Stephens Passage. A few good fish were landed but it would appear that the sheer number of boats may have put the kingfish off the bite. Please remember your fishing etiquette when there are lots of other boats around to avoid any mishaps and be patient with others when drifting through the strike zone. Take only enough fish for a feed. Sustainability is the key focus needed to really look after this awesome fishery, and we don’t take it for granted by being greedy. The scallop season has also now opened and the reports are of scallops in a mediocre condition, with a lot around the 87-90cm mark. On that note, make sure you carry an approved measuring device on board and not just 2 nails in a piece of wood. Otherwise when you are greeted at the boat ramp by a MAF officer you may find yourself in hot water with incorrectly sized scallops. Some scallops had little or no roe in them and the meat size was a bit on the small side. Okiwi Bay had good numbers but they should improve on size and quality with another 5-6 weeks under their belt. The other day I was talking Kathy,

our resident expert on the subject of kayaking and I thought I would share some of her thoughts with you. If you’re sitting in your office at work, or in front of the fire at home with a million things going through your mind and can’t remember the last time you did something you really enjoyed, then it’s time to get a kayak, some fishing gear, safety gear and get onto the water. Fishing from your kayak is not only productive, but it’s physically and mentally good for you as well. As soon as I get onto my kayak, I forget about all the worries in life and just enjoy being on the water. Some of the things I’ve encountered on my fishing adventures, I’ll never forget till the day I die. I’ve been lucky enough to have had encounters with orcas and dolphins checking me out, been pulled around by sharks and other large fish before releasing them as well as watching the most amazing sunsets and sunrises. For me, I love the challenge, the serenity as well as the physical exercise. You don’t have to spend heaps of money and you don’t have to go out 15km. You can just buy a cheap kayak and start in the rivers or bays with a simple fishing rod and tackle as long as you follow the basic rules to keep safe. It’s something the whole family can enjoy. Kayak fishing can be done all year long and you’ll enjoy the element of surprise in stealthy approaches to the fish, and whether you catch the big one or a great feed it really doesn’t matter. You’ll look around and be stunned by your surroundings whatever the weather. For more info on kayaking contact us at the club.

FC Nelson Locomotive celebrate winning the Nelson Bays Football second division on Saturday. Photo: Sarah Board.

Loco wins championship

In its first year together as a team FC Nelson Locomotive has taken home the Nelson Bays division two football championship. The team, made up of players from various former clubs, secured the title after a win over its nearest competitors, Nelson Suburbs, last week. Its players turned up to its match against Richmond Athletic on Saturday with purple colour through their hair and in a mood to party with an unassailable lead on the points ladder. The team beat Richmond 4-3 at Jubilee Park and was awarded the

championship trophy after the game. Coach Sean Barker says it has been a great season for the team, as most didn't know each other at the beginning of the year. "We have some players that have played at a really good level before, but we weren't sure how that would come together so we are rapt to have won it." It's the second trophy the team has won this year, after it beat Motueka earlier in the season to win the Sprig & Fern Challenge trophy. The team is still competing in two cup competitions.

Waimea College girls 1st XI football co-coach Sandy Hamson, left, and parent Lara Gordon with the signed Liverpool and Barcelona football jerseys that will be auctioned off at a quiz night for the team. Also to be auctioned is a rare Champions League football, one of only 11 in the world that was signed by the winning Chelsea team after this year's final in Munich. The quiz night will raise money for the team to help with travel costs for the national

secondary schools tournament in Taupo. The items were gifted to the team by co-coach Joe Green, who sourced them from the United Kingdom. The quiz night is being held at the Waimea College hall on August 8 from 7pm. There are dozens of other prizes donated by local businesses that the team is very grateful to. WHAt ouR custoMeRs HAve to sAy

We are your one stop decorating shop Building trust one room at a time To the team at Colourplus I have recently dealt with Helen from your Nelson shop and I cannot speak highly enough of her excellent service and help she provided to me with the supply of blinds for our tenanted property. Helen was a pleasure to deal with and impressed with her style of communication and giving helpful advice. Helen also went the extra mile to help us get the blinds installed quickly as she understood the urgency for us with our new tenants which we were extremely grateful for. Helen is a great asset to your company and I will certainly be recommending your company to anyone I come in contact with for household furnishings, etc. And Helen will be the person I seek to contact when we do more refurbishments at our home. Please pass on my personal thanks to Helen. Regards Trisha Strickland
