Centre at Three Brothers Corner in Richmond is on the move so Foodstuffs South Island can prepare the land for future development.

Foodstuffs South Island has consent for a New World supermarket on the site.

While it was a weekend to forget for Central Districts, losing all three of their local matches at Saxton Oval, locally-based Claudia Green was still full of excitement at the opportunity to play in front of her friends and family.

It was the first time Claudia and the Hinds have played a T20 at the ground, while the Stags’ last local game was in 2017.

Fans packed into the ground for a doubleheader of Super Smash T20 action against Otago under the sweltering sun in what was billed to be a blockbuster day of cricket.

Local Kate Gaging took to the field for the Hinds, making four runs before she was bowled but still holding bragging rights over

further updates about the proposed supermarket at this point.

The consent expires in March this year, which means the consent needs to be activated to retain it.

The company has owned the site on the corner of Bateup Rd and Gladstone Rd since 2007 and re-

vealed its plans for a New World supermarket six years later. In 2014 the Tasman District Council approved the rezoning of the 1.64 hectares of land from residential to commercial and in 2016 granted consent for a 4,000 square metre supermarket and

two retail tenancies.

Three years ago, Foodstuffs South Island said the development timetable for the supermarket was being reviewed due to the economic conditions associated

with the Covid-19 pandemic. Now it is developing the site and Bay Landscapes and Garden Centre is moving to Artillery Place on the east side of Lower Queen St. Bill and Leslie Norriss have been operated Bay Landscapes and Garden Centre on 5,000 square metres of the Foodstuff’s site since 2005, initially as a landscape business beside the former Bay Nurseries which closed down for a period. They kickstarted the garden centre in 2014 to work alongside their landscape business and Bill says the combination has worked well.

“It has been quite magical.”

Their daughter Jasmin Costello is now in charge of the business and will be the face of the business at their new site, especially when Bill and Leslie retire this year.

Bill says they have always operated the business at Three Brothers Corner with the knowledge they would have to move on when their landlord, Foodstuffs, required the land. For 15 years they have leased the site on a monthby-month basis and hence they were given about six-weeks to vacate the site. In the meantime, work has already begun around the business to clear Foodstuff’s site.

Their last day of business is February 12 and the family is preparing for the major exercise of shifting a garden centre and landscape business to a smaller site. Artillery Place will not be the high-profile site they have enjoyed at Three Brothers Corner, but they are confident their customers will follow them to their new address.

centre in 2014, Leslie says they knew little about gardening and much has been learnt from their customers over the years.

“We only had about 10 plants when we started at the garden centre. We didn’t know one from the other. But now we love it –love the customers and we’ve learnt a lot from them.”

Compost and potting mixes are made on site and some of the fertilisers mixed by Bill follow the original recipes left by the Thorn family who owned the garden centre for decades.

Jasmin says it will be business as usual at Artillery Place, including the pick-your-own vegetable seedlings. Customers dig out their

own seedlings and wrap them in newspaper and she says it enables people with smaller gardens to pick and choose a few vegetables to grow rather than buy a whole punnet of each vegetable.

“It is really popular, and it is a good point of difference for the business.”

She says more and more people are trying to be self-sustainable with their own vegetables and she wants to make it easier for them to achieve their goal. The younger generations are increasingly interested in growing their own vegetables, while many of their customers are in their 30s and landscaping new easy-care gardens around a new build.

Once the business is transferred to its new site, she plans to use technology more so customers can book landscape deliveries online.

Driver who crashed stock truck loses driver’s licence

It was the first time that Carlos Ronald Thomas Davies was behind the wheel of a heavy truck and trailer, loaded with lambs.

On November 24 last year he was travelling on State Highway 63 in the Tasman District when he lost focus, drifted across the road on a corner and rolled the truck, killing and maiming many animals. The crash also blocked the only route open between Nelson and Blenheim for several hours, which inconvenienced many travellers.

At the time, State Highway 6 was closed for repairs following major storm damage last August.

Davies was sentenced in the Blenheim District Courton Monday after pleading guilty to charges of careless driving and breaching a logbook by exceeding work time requirements.

Davies was uninjured in the crash, about 10 kilometres west of the village of St Arnaud, in which witnesses at the time reported the “very sad” sight of animals remaining trapped in the vehicle, many of

which were badly injured. Police prosecution told the court Davies said he had not been paying attention and drifted wide on a corner. He had started work that day at 5am.

According to the entry in his logbook, he had been driving for eight-and-a-half hours before the crash, which exceeded the maximum work time without a break.

first time he had driven that type of truck,” McGuigan said.

Judge Tony Zohrab said he was concerned that Davies had displayed a “pretty bad piece of driving”, which had potentially significant consequences for other road users, notwithstanding he had been driving a heavy truck and trailer unit loaded with lambs.

McGuigan said information provided by Davies’ employer showed he had learned a tough lesson by what had happened, and there was no heightened risk in allowing him to keep driving.

Judge Zohrab said in convicting Davies that it had been a “bad case of careless driving with potentially significant consequences”, particularly for harm to others on the road.

On each charge, he was fined $250 and disqualified from driving for a month.

The

The law states that drivers must take a break of at least 30 minutes after five-and-a-half hours of work time.

Davies was described by his lawyer Tim McGuigan as a “reasonably inexperienced” driver who showed signs of being competent.

“It was a vehicle he was not used to driving – it was the

“I appreciate that will be difficult, but you have a heavy responsibility driving a vehicle like this,” Judge Zohrab said.

Toxic algae warning for Wai-iti

Tasman District Council has warned that toxic algae coverage in the Wai-iti River has now approached high enough levels to be a serious risk to dogs and potentially those playing in the river if they are not careful to avoid it. The toxic algae is now a problem in the lower Wai-iti, but parts of some other rivers such as the Waimea, Motueka, Lower Motupiko, Sherry, Moutere, Tākaka and potentially other rivers could be affected also. The popular swimming sites on the Lee River and Roding River do not appear to be affected. The warning will be in place until the next rainfall event that will cause enough flow to wash the toxic algae off the rocks.

SH65 scrub fire

Four helicopters were fighting a vegetation fire on SH65 between Murchison and Springs Junction on Monday. The fire started shortly after 11am. Fire and Emergency shift manager Simon Lyford says the difficult and steep terrain meant ground crews were stood down in favour of helicopters.

On Monday afternoon the fire had spread from four hectares to 15. Simon says no buildings were in danger but the highway was initially closed to allow crews to work.

From Wakefield to Antarctica

Proving dreams really can come true if you wait long enough.

Wakefield’s Andrew Lane has just achieved his by landing a job in Antarctica.

“I had the chance to go 25 years ago when I was working as a mechanic at Coronet Peak in Queenstown, but I never did and have always regretted it,” he says.

His wife, who he met while working in Queenstown, has known of his desire to go and live in the most isolated continent in the world since she met him.

She was fully supportive of his decision to leave her behind for a year.

“We run a business together so only one of us could go and I was the lucky one,” Andrew says.

Andrew is currently stationed at Scott Base with about 85 other people. They have all been specifically chosen for their skillset and mental aptitude.

“I am here to do carpentry jobs, so anything that needs fixing or maintenance is down to me.”

When he first arrived in September the temperature was -40C, which was one of the biggest challenges, along with there being daylight for 23 hours of the day.

“It’s warmer now and is around 1C today, which is quite pleasant,” he told Waimea Weekly during an interview last week.

He says that while food doesn’t ever go off because it’s so cold, they still need to use fridges at the base.

“You have to keep everything in fridges to stop it all freezing.

“We even have to use thermal wraps on our water bottles - not to stop them from

getting warm, but to stop them from turning into ice.

If that happened when you were out in the field, you’d be stuck with no supplies.”

And when the team do leave the base to go on missions, they must take a toilet pack with them and return with their own waste.

“There are strict rules that you leave nothing outside,” he says.

“Not even your natural waste.

“You do it in a sealed bucket and take it back to base to dispose of it. Your poo freezes so no one is troubled by the smell.”

A highlight of his trip was spending four days at Cape Bird in a penguin colony.

“There is an elaborate hut for scientists to stay at while they study the colony of 80,000 penguins and I went

there to get it ready for their arrival.

“One penguin came up to me and started nibbling my glove. I’ll never forget it.”

Visiting the heritage huts by helicopter is also up there as his top experience.

The hut Ernest Shackleton built for his expedition from 1907 to 1909 is at Cape Royds, an area about 35km from Scott base.

“I’ve always wanted to visit Shackleton’s hut and we were given an hour to look around on the way back from the penguin colony, which was pretty special,” he says.

“I can drive to the Discovery Hut from our base, which

was Scott’s hut for his 1901 to 1904 expedition. It’s the most visited hut because you can either walk or drive there, it’s so close.”

The hut at Cape Evans, which was built in 1911 and used by both Scott and Shackleton, is the most complete hut.

“You walk through and it’s like they were there just yesterday as everything is still there.”

Despite Antarctica being made up of snow and ice, Andrew says it barely ever snows.

Spending Christmas in one of the most challenging heritage conservation environments on earth was a oncein-a-lifetime experience too, he says.

“We do a secret Santa, and because we have limited supplies everyone handcrafts their gifts.

“I made a cheeseboard out of bits of old heritage timber from around the base and hut, including bits of Shackleton’s hut and Sir Edmund Hillary’s hut. Wood that had been removed to be used for other things.”

In return, he received a hand-painted, stainless-steel penguin.

“Making the gifts takes months and people really put a lot of time and effort into it.”

In his downtime, he says he goes out for walks or rides bikes on the sea ice.

“You can walk out as far as you like and stand on the middle of the sea ice. There’s no sound and no human-made structures. Just white.

“Although I’m currently looking out of the window at a group of around 50 seals with their pups and some Emperor penguins who have just turned up.”

Separated cycleways coming to Salisbury

Work is now being done on Salisbury Road to prepare it for the test installation of separated cycleways.

The cycle lanes mark the beginning of the implementation of Tasman District Council’s Street for People programme which aims to create a safe walking and cycling network across the region.

Garin College student Nate Wilbourne cycles along Salisbury Road each day to get to school.

“I’ve always found it to be quite an unsafe place to be biking down with cars being so close to the cycle lane.”

He thought that a cycleway separate from traffic would make cycling down Salisbury a safer and more attractive option for commuters which would hopefully encourage more people to get on their bikes.

“It’s about seeing the long game and improving the situation now for future generations.”

Nate is a member of a group of community representatives who have worked alongside council’s traffic engineers to create their preferred designs.

Bicycle Nelson Bays convenor

Bevan Woodward agrees that it could be challenging for cyclists to navigate Salisbury Road as it was currently.

“It’s intimidating,” he says. “There is a lot of traffic, and [cyclists] feel very much like the outsiders.”

Bevan believes the separated cycleways will provide a benefit for both cyclists and motorists.

“If we can get a whole lot of students out of cars, it’s better for them for a whole bunch of good

reasons, and it’s better for people that need to drive because there’ll be less vehicles. Hopefully we can create a win-win.”

The about two-metre-wide cycle lanes will travel down each side of the road between the two newly installed raised crossings outside Waimea Intermediate School. 800mm-high plastic separators will provide a barrier between cyclists and motorists.

The existing painted flush medians will be narrowed to allow

space for the cycle lanes.

Council’s transportation manager Jamie McPherson thought the trial is an exciting step forward in making the region’s urban streets safer.

“It’s a bit like planting a tree –many benefits will be reaped in the future,” he says. “The real prize we are working towards is a comprehensive, linked-up network of safe paths and cycleways.”

Jamie acknowledged that changes to street layouts can be confront-

ing, and he assures residents that council will carefully consider any feedback as the project progresses.

Bevan also urged drivers not to judge the change too harshly.

“Often times, these changes actually become hugely accepted and prove to be really successful,” he says.

“I encourage people not to have an immediate negative response but think it through and consider the bigger picture.”

The infrastructure will be permanently installed in the future once public feedback has been considered and the layout of the cycle lanes has been tweaked if necessary.

Wensley Road, Queen Street, Hill Street, and Champion Road will be going through a similar co-design process in the coming months.

The Streets for People Programme in Richmond has been kickstarted by $2.4 million in government funding while another project for Māpua’s Aranui Road received an additional $840,000.

National hang-gliding champs fly to Murch

More than 30 hang-gliders will be taking to the air and riding the thermals around Murchison during the national championship that begins next week.

Over eight days of competition and a couple of days of practice, competitors will be launching from the top of Mt Murchison which is set in the middle of the west and east coasts to provide the most consistent weather and flying for the event.

Tasman Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club president, Kevin Rooke, has already been practicing from Mt Murchison’s lofty heights for the competition which will see pilots negotiating thermals to fly up to 150km each day.

“Thirty gliders in the air at the same time, flying between thermals across country together,” he says.

“You get people spending large amounts of money and spending their annual leave to go to competitions like this.”

Competitors have two practice days before launching into the competition on 4 February and for eight days they will be given daily tasks to follow that may take them as far as the St Arnaud

Range and Springs Junction before landing near Murchison township.

All competitors launch within an hour of the start time and race around the course.

The challenge is using thermals to stay airborne and glide their way around the course.

Kevin says mountainous country is challenging for flying, but the mountains provide more opportunities to catch thermals to get up in the air.

“It’s mentally challenging and

physically demanding. You get the highs and lows of thinking you’re invincible when you fly a thermal that no-one else is flying, then you are on the ground watching other people finding thermals while you’re packing up.”

Nationally, about 1,500 pilots fly either hang-gliders or paragliders, and Kevin estimates about a quarter of those pilots fly the rigid-wing hang-gliders. Many of those pilots have been flying gliders since the 80s and

90s, with younger pilots often taking up the cheaper and easier-to-pack equipment for paragliding that enables them to hike and fly.

With years of experience under their belt, running off a mountain is familiar territory for the hang-gliding pilots.

“Most of us have launched over a thousand times, so you know what you are expecting and have faith that every time you run down that hill your feet are going to be lifted off the ground.”

If that is not challenging enough, pilots and vehicle drivers have the task of packing and retrieving hang-gliders that have run out of thermals and drifted to the ground in mountainous terrain.

Kevin says the competition depends upon landowners allowing them to across their land to retrieve gliders.

“We have really been received with such amazing hospitality by the Murchison community. They’ve really made it possible for it to happen and one of the reasons we keep coming back year after year.

“Farmers are prepared to put up with us landing on their farm, and a lot of the locals have driven for us in the past and we really value that relationship. It’s one of the reasons the competition is as successful as it is.”

This year the competition is giving two $500 donations to Murchison community organisations.

Event organiser Tom Mulder says several international pilots are joining the competition again this year following the lifting of Covid-19 travel restrictions.

“It’s great conditions for flying and a great place for a holiday, and everyone is always looking for an excuse to fly in another country.”

Court’s decision lifts pending ban on helicopters

Property owners fighting to keep air access open to an enclave within the Abel Tasman National Park are happy the legal spat is now over but are still smarting at the cost and what they say is a huge waste of time it’s taken to keep the status quo.

“Those of us who carried the burden of this are relieved and are now trying to get past the resentment at the waste,” says affected property owner and a spokesman for the airstrip users, Stephen Franks.

The Environment Court has declined to issue an enforcement order over the privately-owned airstrip at Awaroa which means helicopters have been given the green light to continue using it when it looked like they’d be banned.

Awaroa includes an enclave of private properties which uses air services to get guests in and out.

Franks, a Wellington lawyer who owns one of the nine or 10 properties at Awaroa with registered rights of way which allows aircraft to use the airstrip, said the entire exercise - triggered by the Tasman District Council investigating a noise complaint, was inexplicable and “just absurd”.

He says the blow had been softened by the council agreeing to contribute $170,000 to the costs

bill – about 70 per cent of the legal costs paid from the pockets of multiple respondents.

Head of Helicopters Nelson Pete Darling says he alone spent tens of thousands of dollars and countless hours simply to “do a big circle”.

He says everyone was now back to the status quo - flying in and out of Awaroa.

It all began with a complaint to the Tasman District Council in 2018, not about helicopters but a small, noisy aeroplane using a new airstrip which had been established on another property adjoining the existing airstrip.

In the process of investigating this new airstrip, the council then

turned its focus to the original airstrip, which has been managed by Awaroa Aerodrome Limited (AAL) on behalf of the owners since late 2016.

It was commonly assumed that they were covered by existing use rights, dating back to the 1960s, but following its investigation, the council determined that these rights did not apply to the airstrip and the owners needed to get a resource consent.

There was large-scale objection, which then prompted the council to apply to the Environment Court for enforcement orders, seeking to end the use of the airstrip by light aircraft and helicopters.

This was despite the key complaint being about noise generated by fixed-wing aircraft.

The primary issue for the court was the extent of the historic use of the airstrip and the existing rights of current users based on this.

In a move that baffled many, the court’s interim decision in late 2021 allowed fixed-wing aircraft to continue operating, but not helicopters, because of what the court said was a lack of evidence over the extent to which chopper noise might be contributing to the problem.

The move would have ended helicopters operating in and out of Awaroa from April 2022, but

Darling, who was also aware of the precedent the decision might set for others around the country, managed to stall the ban.

Based on extra evidence provided, the court was satisfied that helicopters did have existing use rights and did not pose an environmental problem to the degree initially thought. The council told Waimea Weekly that it believed it now have a platform to work from in addressing the challenges and issues associated with the growing popularity of Awaroa.

TDC senior environmental manager Kim Drummond said all parties recognised the value in having access to this “beautiful and remote part of our country” managed within sustainable limits.

He said the court had provided some helpful guidance around how the airstrip could function to service both the landowners and the visitors to the area.

Drummond also said that Awaroa carried the unique status of having its foreshore managed as a scenic reserve, under the combined jurisdiction of the Department of Conservation and Tasman District Council.

Encouraging further education for women

with financial stress and it gave her a boost in confidence.

Trying to study full time with the financial pressures of raising a family of four was a stressful time for Julia Grigg and receiving a Nelson Soroptimist Education Trust award eased both the financial and emotional pressures.

The trust offers up to 20 awards annually of about $1,500 each to women and girls who are enrolled in full time or part-time tertiary study or apprenticeship.

For Julia, study was a long haul. She studied psychology part-time for seven years, on and off, with young children, and she describes it as “really horrible” due to the pressures it imposed on the family.

Julia and her husband Garrett had decided to get married after three children, so all the children could be in the photo. Then number four came along, adding morning sickness, postnatal depression and a sick baby into the challenges for studying, so study plans were put on hold.

In 2015 she decided to take the plunge and study full time at NMIT, which meant Garrett working long hours to support the family on one income for the next three years. It was tough, she says.

In her third year she applied for the trust’s Janice Neame Scholarship and the money relieved that pressure. It meant she could get car repairs that were needed to get a warrant of fitness and it paid for some of the essential childcare so she could study.

“It helped me with financial stress which gave me time to sit down and focus on how to get my car warranted and cart my kids around and be able to study to give them a better life.”

The award provided more than just the financial assistance though, she says. It relieved the emotional stress that went hand-in-hand

“It was acknowledgement I was on the right path and had support behind me. I was part of a community. It gave me that feel-good feeling. That was the biggest thing.”

Julia graduated at the end of 2018 with a Paetahi Tumu Korero Bachelor of Counselling and today she has her own business, Julia Grigg Counselling.

“My passion is working with women who have experienced domestic violence and sexual assault.”

She says the Soroptimist award helped her reach her goal.

Soroptimist International Nelson member Barbara Dicker says the awards provides funding for financial hardship to applicants from a variety of backgrounds. Many of the applicants are solo parents, but it is also aimed at school leavers who miss out on other scholarships and will struggle financially through their studies.

She says applicants often find it hard to write about their financial hardship on the application form and why they need the money, but anyone applying has similar challenges.

“They can find it embarrassing, but we have to work out their hardship. That’s why a good referee is important.”

Applications for the awards close on January 31.

Soroptimist International is a global volunteer movement working to transform the lives of women and girls.

In Nelson, it gathers much of its funding from hiring out the gowns, hoods and regalia for graduation ceremonies throughout the region. Last year it also raised $20,000 from the sale of peony tubers to give to sister Soroptimist clubs in Eastern Europe supporting women and children fleeing Ukraine.

Local History

Looking back on Waimea’s big flood of 1904

In March of 1904, the Brightwater and Appleby residents experienced what was deemed to be the worst flood since 1868. While there was some damage in the city and in the upper reaches of the Maitai, it was minor compared to the serious damage done in the country areas.

In Brightwater, the scene was heart-rending for farmers and the general feeling was that some would be ruined. The Appleby district suffered severely with the loss of considerable numbers of stock. Watercress Bridge was lifted and carried into an adjoining paddock with Brightwater cut off from Waimea West, so farmers soon erected a temporary bridge to allow for some movement.

Silt and debris lay everywhere which was to take some time to clear. Mr Lightband’s orchards did not fare well with a huge

amount of debris in among the trees and quantities of soil washed away. At the back of Lightband’s home huge trees had piled up one on top of the other, forming barricades 20 to 30 feet in height in some places. Water had entered the butter factory at Brightwater which stopped the deliveries of milk and the production of butter. The manager’s home was inundated with flood waters running through it and an outdoor shed had been lifted off its piles and shifted bodily some feet away. Mr Rutherford’s mill suffered severe damage with a storeroom of about 35 square feet picked up and moved about a chain (20 metres) away and then smashed beyond repair. The force of the water was shown with a grinding stone weighing close on to a ton found in the debris of the store, having been carried there. Flour, chaff, oats and bran stored at the mill was ruined, along with the

mill race. Likewise, the Rutherford flax mill, on the banks of the river, suffered extensive damage. The river broke through into the tail race in two places and carried the fences away.

Mr George Silcock lost 20 acres of good fertile land which was capable of yielding 40 bushels to

the acre. This land was covered in boulders and became a stony wasteland. The river breached at the mouth of the gorge and washed down through properties like a tidal wave. It then divided and converged at the back of the mill. The Brightwater Hotel was lucky in escaping with only minor

damage considering the waters flowed past the hotel. Waters carried away outhouses and left deposits of mud around a foot deep. The shops in the Main Street (Ellis Street) did not escape, with Granville’s store inundated and losing a stack of freshly-threshed grain of around 15 tonnes. The counter was underwater and most stock destroyed. Fairey’s store and post office experienced similar damage at a rough cost of 100 pounds.

The Waimea Bakery Company’s premises were also flooded, and a large amount of stock ruined. In the bakehouse, the water rose to within a few inches of the firebars of the oven, and on the following morning the bakers were busy making bread while standing up to their knees in water.

Immediately following the flood, the townspeople began talks with the Council about the need for an embankment at River Terrace to prevent a similar event.

Stay safe around power lines when doing jobs at your place

If you’re catching up on home maintenance but working around electricity, there are a few things to watch out for. Any work around electricity lines can be dangerous. Here are some important tips to help you stay safe while you do common jobs around your property.

POWER LINES SAFETY FOR OUTDOOR MAINTENANCE

If you’re checking or cleaning gutters and downpipes, painting the roof or eaves, or doing a job anywhere near the connection of the power lines to your house, it’s important to know what to do to stay safe.

Sometimes the power line can cross your property and drop quite low or go across other structures such as a garage or a shed. Be aware of the location of the service line to your home when you’re planning how to do a job.

If you’re planting trees, building fences or doing jobs on something tall in your driveway, it’s always important to look up and around you to see where power lines are and keep away from them.

Locals well-behaved over holidays

Drove from Nelson via Blenheim and Kaikōura to Kaiapoi. Love Nelson and Blenheim road repairs, where the road needed to be fixed and shut for seven weeks, was fantastic.

Karl Braun

Shame they didn’t catch the guy I followed yesterday from Brightwater to Richmond looking down at his phone whilst weaving all over the road and only doing 60k in 80k area.

Louise Sangster

It’s a nationwide problem. Can’t sales of them just be banned? They cause thousands of dollars of damage everyday. They are biggest issue at camper dump stations, blocking them up as well.

Final stop for Railway

Ooh, now it’s a new chef I’m going go try the menu.

Not sure everyone is actually reading the article. Yes, new owners, yes new chef. And well done, we do need more fun night life around.

Should be some good craft beer with those beards.

Yay, finally a decent meal in Richmond.

If you need to work near your service line, you can temporarily disconnect the power for safety. The safety disconnection service can be provided by one of Network Tasman’s approved contractors, listed on our website at www.networktasman.co.nz/new-connections

WASHING WALLS NEAR METER BOXES

Remember, water and electricity don’t mix. So if you’re water blasting your external walls keep away from the meter box. Water inside the meter box can cause problems.

TREE TRIMMING AROUND LINES

Be aware of the danger of trees coming into contact with the service line that goes from power poles on the street to your property. If you think your trees are getting too close to the line, then it’s important to get the right advice and help to trim them back.

Option 1: You can contact a network trained arborist to take care of the work as they’re trained to carry out this work safely. There is a list of network trained arborists on our website (visit www.networktasman.co.nz/staysafe/trees-andpowerlines)

Option 2: Option 2: The power can be temporarily disconnected using the safety disconnection service so you or your contractor (e.g. a gardener) can do the work safely (visit www.networktasman.co.nz/staysafe/smart-thinking)

If you have a question you can email the specialists in our team at trees@networktasman.co.nz. We’re happy to provide advice to help keep you safe.

The Brightwater Hill family Part 1

Pinegrove, which was once the Hill’s family home, was left by Laura to the people of Brightwater under the auspices of the Tasman District Council. The homestead was sold and the Pinegrove Trust was set up with the proceeds of the sale.

Over the years, the trust has contributed to many organisations in Brightwater, including the School, Pinegrove Kindergarten, Scouts and Guides, Brightwater Playcentre and Wanderers Sports teams.

At one time the trust ran a bus into Richmond every week, for the elderly, and the trust has also helped people with disabilities.

Pinegrove homestead, so named because it originally stood in a small grove of pine trees, was built by Laura’s grandfather Jabez Hill.

Jabez had immigrated to New Zealand as a young child in 1842 with his parents Thomas and Anne Hill.

Initially the family lived in Brook Street, and in 1847 they

shifted to ‘Waimea South’, as noted in the ‘Jury Lists’ of the time.

When Jabez married Charlotte Rowbottom in 1865, the couple moved into a two-room, with a loft accessible by ladder, ‘squatter’s cottage’.

The cottage had been built by the then absentee owner, on the land where Pinegrove homestead now stands.

This land,

showing as ‘Section 18’ on an early map of Brightwater, was purchased by Jabez and Charlotte in 1867.

By 1875 the couple had five children and had outgrown the squatter’s cottage, so they built Pinegrove.

However, the squatter’s cottage was saved and it became the kitchen, dairy and storage lofts for the new house.

Jabez and Charlotte went on to have another nine children before Jabez lost his life in 1890 when he fell from his horse.

Charlotte continued to live at Pinegrove and run the farm, which included a hop garden, until her death in 1934.

When she passed away, her daughter Ethel bought Pinegrove from the estate, and after upgrading the ‘squatter’s cottage’ kitchen, lived there with her sister Emily until her death in 1957.

Their brother Hollis was a teacher who had some interest in farming, and he bought Pinegrove from Ellen’s estate.

It was around this time that the

area adjoining Ellis Street was split from the Hill farm and became the Brightwater Domain. Hollis and his family lived in one of the farm cottages, and when he and his wife Emma passed away they left Pinegrove to their daughter Laura who had cared for them in their later years.

Bringing the news to Brightwater

JO KENT

It’s been just over two years since Lockie Wiren started delivering the Waimea Weekly newspaper to homes in Brightwater. His round of 300 houses keeps him busy each Wednesday afternoon when he gets home from school.

“I save up my wages and have just bought myself a $165 Lego set of a Fast & Furious car. I’ll have to start saving up all over again now.”

One of the highlights of delivering to so many houses is that he gets to know other people’s pets who often come down to the mailbox to greet him.

“There’s a big bullmastiff dog on Charlotte Lane who always sits and lets me pat him. I look forward to delivering to that house each week.”

Flowers go on show

After years of organising the Brightwater Flower Show, organiser Cheryl Thibodeau says the display of blooms still takes her breath away.

Floral and plant displays will take over the Brightwater Hall on Saturday, 4 February, for the annual Summer Flower Show.

Cheryl says the summer show differs from the spring version, with the stars of summer being dahlias and gladioli.

“Even if you’re not into gardening, you can just wander the hall which is just totally packed full of smell and beauty, every year it still takes my breath away.”

Though the Brightwater Horticultural Society is hosting it, other groups will also be participating

with roses, cacti and bonsai also on display, making it a real show for the Brightwater community.

Cheryl encourages first-timers to come along and give displaying a go.

“There is a lot of support and everyone from the society is happy to share their knowledge.”

Vases are provided with entries either being a single bloom or a vase of three flowers.

Though Cheryl’s garden has been left to free-range this year due to ill-health, she says she will still be able to find some gems to display.

She says, she always looks forward to seeing the different entries.

“Nature’s got her own mind on the day.” Entries are open until 7.30pm on Thursday, 2 February. The show is open to the public from 9am on Saturday, 4 February.

Twelve-year-old Lockie starts Waimea College next week and is looking forward to taking part in the high performance

Sportspro course which he has qualified for. “I love playing basketball and even play it on my Xbox One X.”

The AT Electrical Xtreme Super Saloon Series finished its first edition at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway on Saturday night.

The 10-day, 5 round series saw a hearty crowd gather to see the best drivers in NZ compete before they head south for their NZ title in Dunedin in a few weeks.

The Super Saloons have been light on meetings in Nelson due to numbers. However, locals Ian Burson, Dave Manera and series sponsor Campbell McManaway joined 30+ other drivers to compete two nights in Christchurch, then Greymouth, Blenheim and Nelson.

Ian Burson was competing in the ex-1nz machine while he waits on engine parts from the U.S. Campbell McManaway recently purchased a new Stealth chassis while Dave Manera was returning after a year off.

All three made the feature race in Nelson with McManaway finishing 4th, Burson 10th and Manera 14th.

They then return to Nelson to compete in the South Island title on 25 February.

Cromwell’s Ray Stewart had the spill of the night, ending upside down in the heats while sitting

in the top 5 overall, the incident ending his series ambitions.

The Youth Ministocks ran their club champs, Speedster Callum Russ, having his final meeting at home before aging out of Youth, was locked on points with Jack Burson going into the final heat. Both are heading to Rotorua in a few weeks to contest Ministock in

Paradise. It was Burson who had a better grid for the final race, but Russ took the win by a mere 1 second over Burson to end his final home race with the club title.

Deegan Broker finished 3rd overall after his fastest lap was just enough to head him off from Luke Higgins after both were tied

on points.

Jack Rarity picked up the Stock Car Hit to Pass trophy.

The numbers also continue to grow in the Stock Car class with some big meetings coming up.

The T.Qs were light on numbers with some away at the South Island title, Cameron McKenzie winning all 3 races.

It was a welcome return to the Sidecars for Adie Drake who finished second with partner Samuel Kingsbury behind Brent Steer and Wade Thorn who went undefeated for the night. There was a parade for new 3nz Steve Soper, the rest of the title-contending cars followed Soper as he acknowledged the support of the other drivers to get him over the line.

The S.I. Super Saloon title is likely to be boosted by some North Island cars staying down after the NZ Championship, while Ian Burson’s final season is on hold for another year or two.

Claudia, who made one before being run out.

Claudia found herself in action early in the second innings, finding the first breakthrough in the fifth over to put the brakes on the run chase after they posted 130/9.

The wicket slowed down Otago’s rapid run-rate and got CD back into the game.

Right-arm medium pacer Rosemary Mair also contribued to the game as she went for just 13 runs from three overs as they looked to

plug up the scoring.

Claudia finished with one wicket from her three overs, while Kate would redeem an early drop in the field with two catches at the death.

Unfortunately, the Sparks’ early damage paid dividends as the game entered the business end as they tracked towards victory.

Three late wickets in consecutive overs breathed some life back into the home side, However, it was too little too late as Otago needed eight runs from the second to last over and found the boundary

twice, with a six to win it. Sunday saw Claudia and the Volts in action again in a oneday game against the Sparks for the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, while Kate wasn’t included in the squad.

Looking to avenge their loss, they restricted the Sparks to 272/5 from their 50 overs, with openers Kate Broadmore (81) and Bella James (101) putting on a 180-run first-wicket partnership.

In response, the home side posted 235 before being bowled out in the 47th over to lose by 37 runs.

Otago Sparks 136/6 (Olivia Gain 43, Kate Ebrahim 26; Jess Watkin 2/44/3.4) win by four wickets over Central District Hinds 130/9 (Natalie Dodd 59, Kerry-Anne Tomlinson 21; Emma Black 4/15/4, Eden Carson 2/23/3).

Otago Volts 166/8 (Dean Foxcroft 61, Nick Kwant 21; Raymond Toole 2/36/4 Josh Clarkson 2/37/4) win by four runs over Central Districts Stags 162/9 (Bayley Wiggins 41, Tom Bruce 32, Will Young 25, Ross Taylor 21, William Clark 20; Matthew Bacon 5/28/4, Michael Rae 2/35/4).

Otago Sparks 272/5 (Bella James 101, Kate Broadmore 81, Polly Inglis 30; Anita Kumar 3/48/8, Claudia Green 0/35/8) win by 35 runs over Central Districts Hinds 235/10 (Natalie Dodd 81, Georgia Atkinson 40, Mikaela Greig 29; Caitlin Blakely 4/45/10, Sophie Oldershaw 3/45/9.3).

Fishing News

DALE GILES

I had a message from a friend Tuesday night asking if I would like to join him for a night fish out in the Tasman Bay. Tides and weather were in our favour so I had no reason to pass on the opportunity and it paid off. I loaded up the truck with my fishing gear and headed for the Nelson ramp to meet Jeremy.

We set off and thought we would try for a trawl for a kingfish first but to our surprise it was like a highway along the Boulder Bank with boats trawling back and forth.

We waited for the slack tides to change to anchor up and go for a snapper.

It wasn’t long until Jeremy had his first fish hooked that put up a good fight. I was yet to land my first snapper and wondering

if it would happen as all the action was happening on the opposite side of the boat.

Around 9:30pm I heard my reel start to scream and the line was peeling out I knew that it was a big fish and had to play it well to land it.

When I finally got it within two metres of the boat I thought it was a big snapper but to my delight I had caught one of the biggest trevally’s I have ever seen.

The excitement continued as the fish kept making runs as it got it closer to the boat.

I was able to land the fish and we celebrated with a high five. We are so lucky to have such amazing fishing on our doorstep in Tasman Bay.

New year, new job: 5 steps to landing the job you really want in 2023

You’re probably familiar with the standard path to finding a new job. Create your resumé, send out applications, hope to hear back, do your best in interviews and go through the offer process. These are important, but there are a few other key steps in the job search that might not be so obvious. And they can make a huge difference to finding the right job for you. Research showed that 50% of Kiwis plan to set themselves a New Year’s resolution in relation to their career for 2023 - but a job change can take time. It’s worth making sure your time and effort lead you to a job that’s satisfying and suits your needs. So, if you want to find a new job in 2023, here are 5 steps to factor into your job search to land the role you really want.

Put the building blocks in place

There might be times you need to find a job fast and so you jump straight into applying. But if you want to make a more considered move, it’s worth some planning first – whether it’s over a few days or weeks. This is about exploring your options then narrowing down what you really want. It can help to make a list of non-negotiables: the things you decide a job must involve

Recruiters take 15-20 seconds to scan your CV the first time so keep it uncluttered and easy to read.

for you to say ‘yes’. This could include location, schedule, work-life balance, salary or training. Next, research roles and workplaces you’re interested in. Review your career goals or assess your values and see if there are roles that match. You could do a skills assessment, and if there are gaps, look for ways to expand your skills – perhaps through volunteering or a course. It’s also a good time to create a basic resumé and cover letter outline. This will give you a starting point to create tailored versions for each job you apply for.

Practice a positive mindset

A positive outlook can be a big support to your job search, especially through setbacks. Life and careers coach Alex Kingsmill of Upstairs Coaching says it’s a good idea to look for what will keep you feeling motivated during your job search. Try to take something positive from every step along the way, as this will keep you in a resilient headspace, Alex says. Maybe you’ve got your resumé in better shape than ever. Or perhaps you’ve discovered you can answer

If you’re interested in a particular company or organisation, you could consider contacting them directly.

Boost your interview confidence

If there’s one thing you can do to feel more confident going into your interview, it’s practice.

It might feel strange at first to go through ‘mock’ questions or rehearse what you’ll say.

But this practice is essential to providing clear, compelling answers in your interview – and showing the interviewer you’re right for the role.

There are plenty of standard interview questions you can prepare for, like the classic ‘tell me about yourself’ or ‘what are your weaknesses’ questions. Think of the industry-specific

questions you might be asked and look back to the job ad or selection criteria.

Work out the examples you can provide to back up each answer.

It’s a good idea to run through questions and answers with a friend, family member or professional if you can.

As you go through interviews, reflect on each experience. How did it go well? How could you do better next time?

Consider offers with care

You might feel you have to say ‘yes’ to the first offer you get. But it’s worth reviewing a job offer thoroughly to make sure that it’s right for you.

Ask yourself – will this job help me achieve my career goals? Will it provide the working environment I’m looking for?

Are the salary and benefits suitable? Look back to your list of non-negotiables.

Be ready to review a written offer carefully before you accept the job – and politely decline the offer if you decide it’s not right for you.

If you’re ready to land your next role, 2023 could be your year.

Make room in your job search for planning, practice, building a positive mindset, seeking out opportunities and considering your wants and needs. That way, you’ll be on track to landing the job you really want.
