Usually a “run in, run out” exercise, Tahunanui School’s mid-winter swim on Thursday was probably its longest and warmest ever. While some shot off for a hot shower and a Milo, most of the 100 students, including Emma Newson, Zara Stevenson and Sam Moritz pictured above, had to be encouraged to leave the water, clearly happy and warm enough.

Allowing police to use iPads and iPhones will increase efficiency by 30 minutes each day, according to a Nelson sergeant. As part of a new device rollout, 6500 frontline officers were given an iPhone with a further 3900 given an iPad to use on the job. The Nelson officers included in this

Students brave cold for mid winter swim FROM PAGE 1 Principal Paul Drummond believed it was one of the warmest mid-winter swims in the school’s history. “Given the forecast it was quite a pleasant surprise,” he says. “You don’t have to convince most kids to do this, most of them want to do it, it’s like a rite of passage here at Tahunanui School to say that you’ve done it.” Paul described the annual swim as a “fun event” with a bit of school spirit thrown in. “We’ve had some really cold days and we timed this perfectly.”

iPads to save police time FROM PAGE 1 “We can check people on the side of the road, confirm the identity a lot easier so it’s harder for people to give us false details and there are a lot of other advantages,” says Blair. The time freed up by being more efficient will go into prevention activities, which was the whole drive behind the move. With technology evolving all of the time, Blair says the rollout should provide a strong foundation in the years to come. He also adds that the software in the Apple products are specifically designed for police with “several layers” of security. They have heavy duty protection cas-

‘I’ll have one walkway hold the heavy traffic’

How heavy trucks, pedestrians and cyclists use Nelson’s picturesque Rocks Rd is once again being hotly debated. A waterfront lobby group wants to see a promenade on Rocks Rd but also heavy traffic moved off it. And it seems both could become a reality with Nelson City Council to re-open talks on the proposed Southern Arterial Route, which would see a new state highway built from St Vincent St to the Wakatu roundabout. Kevin Isherwood, a communications adviser for The Waterfront Association, which first formed around the time of the arterial route discussions, has major concerns over the safety of a promenade if trucks continue to use Rocks Rd. “We want a walkway that is at least five to eight metres wide, it has to be for safety reasons. It’s not safe to have walkers and cyclists in a four metre space, we don’t want that,” he says. New Zealand Transport Agency is currently conducting a study into how a proposed promenade would best fit on Rocks Rd. Photo: Phillip Rollo. Rd has begun, and although the results are not expected until the end of the year, funding has already been put aside. TWA is also doing its own study, conducted by committee member Tim Bayley and US-based Joe Perrone, who are both civil engineers. While Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the road is currently unsafe he was confident that any form of promenade would increase safety. “It will make things better than they currently are. It has to,” he says. “Worst case scenario, the tight spots will be the same as they are now with a safety barrier and that’s an improvement.” Aldo also confirmed the arte-

rial route discussions will be back on the table at the council in the New Year. With upto-date census data and new traffic figures, Aldo hopes the results will be enough to persuade the government to inject tens of millions more for the build of a 500m long tunnel under Victory Square, easing the burden of heavy traffic on Rocks Rd and Waimea Rd. “It will be [more expensive] but I think the community deserves us to lobby government to get as much as possible. Whether it’s $20 million to go straight through or it’s $100 million, I want the community to go for the full plan so we don’t have to split a community.”

Family begin milky venture AmEricA’S cUp To NElSoN: Nelsonians will have the opportunity to send their best wishes to Emirates Team New Zealand by signing a replica America’s Cup AC72 catamaran dagger board, when Toyota’s ‘Lean with us’ tour comes to Nelson this week. The national tour, which is part of a wider Toyota campaign to generate nationwide support for Emirates Team New Zealand’s upcoming America’s cup challenge, comes to Nelson this Friday, June 28, from 1 to 3pm at The Warehouse. frEE broADbAND iN richmoND: Richmond is well on its way to receiving ultra-fast and free broadband with work underway on Queen St. The project, which is being undertaken by Chorus will put more than 6000 local customers in reach of its services, as well as connect four schools in the area. The timing also coincides with the installation of free WiFi throughout Richmond’s central business district. Top YoUNg groWEr croWNED: Waimea Plains grower Jonathan Sutton has been crowned the Nelson Young Fruit Grower for 2013 after beating some tough competition from five other finalists on Friday. Jonathan, 20, works at Daelyn Partnership and won $1500 cash, a trophy plus an orchard study trip to Hawke’s Bay.

Nelsonians are lapping up nature’s best from a bit closer to home with milk now being sold fresh at a farm gate near Saxton field. Julian Raine’s family has spent the best part of 80 years supplying the community with milk from Oaklands dairy farm, and now he’s bringing the business back to basics offering people a “homegrown” approach to milk. After a year of planning, Julian has invested $1.25 million into helping locals access fresh milk, providing it by the glass bottle out of two Italian vending machines. Julian says he believes all families should be able to buy their milk direct from local farmers and is pleased to be part of a growing trend, with similar ventures popping up around the region. “I think it’s great that buying fresh milk is becoming more popular. People want to know where their food is coming from these days and they also want to support Nelson people. They like to know it’s fresh, and that it’s local.” The vending machines hold 300 litres of refrigerated milk each and Julian says that eventually, one will hold unpasteurised milk, providing people with a choice each time they visit. By September, he hopes to have a number of vending machines all over town, making his milk accessible to all. “I hope that buying fresh milk becomes more of a norm. People should be able to connect with the farmer and speak to the person who produces the milk.” Oaklands milk can be found on the corner of Saxton Rd and Suffolk Rd. The milk costs $2.50 per litre and customers can bring along their own container or buy a reusable glass bottle onsite for $5.

Are Nelson’s public toilets a disgrace? Nelson City Council spends $291,000 servicing our public toilets each year but some in the community still thinks they are a “disgrace”. A question about the state of public toilets, on the Nelson Weekly Facebook page, sparked a flood of comments yesterday with some saying they avoid them at all costs. Gary Brown says the smell is “bloody disgusting”. “When you have to walk through urine to relieve yourself what does it say about the people who are supposed to be controlling the area?” Nikole Berkett says she tries not to use them in case she “catches something”. “They’re feral but the last few times I’ve walked past the ones in Buxton car park all I can smell is disinfectant which at least means they’re being cleaned.” Nelson City Council recently opened a new $120,000 toilet block at the end of Trafalgar St and plans to spend $70,000 renovating the toilets in Buxton Square. However, that is not a result of complaints.

Nan Ward, a council spokesperson says vandalism, including graffiti, smashed doors, smashed toilet pans and overflowing taps, were common and very frustrating. The worst hit areas include toilets near the Neale Park Skate Park, Modellers Pond and the Lions Playground. The latest “customer figures” showed in 2011/12 there were 74 enquiries about the toilets, of which 24 were complaining about a lack of toilet paper. Nan says public toilets in high use areas such as the CBD were cleaned three times a day and the ones in more remote and low use areas were cleaned three times a week. The frequency is generally increased in summer. Other comments on the Facebook page included Sareth Lam saying that the council should create an “aiming at the bowl for dummies” class, while Brenda Kenny says she does not use them as she’s “scared” of what might be lurking inside them.

More school zones to get 40km/h limit

A dusting of snow fell on the hills behind Nelson city on Saturday, although according to Metservice it is not an unusual occurrence at this time of the year. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Winter chill ‘same as every year’ Temperatures in Nelson dropped below zero degrees on Sunday morning and despite a dusting of snow falling on high hills, Metservice say it is just typical for this time of the year. Forecaster Chris Noble was unaware of any snow to signicant-

ly low areas in the region over the weekend, saying it fell only in the higher hills and mountains of north-west Nelson. “Most of this event fell in the Marlborough side particularly in the Kaikoura Ranges,” he says.

The coldest day so far this year was on Sunday when the temperature dropped less than half a degree below freezing. “Otherwise it’s just been in the low single digits which is certainly not uncommon for this time of year.”

Got a Story?

The speed limit in five more school zones could be reduced to 40km/h during peak times, which is welcome news for Hampden St School says principal Don McLean. After a long consultation process, Nelson City Council last year introduced variable speed zones on Nayland Rd, Main Rd Stoke, Vanguard St, Nile St and Muritai St, but could add five more locations to that list depending on the result of amendments to the Speed Limit Bylaw. The variable speed zones encourage motorists to slow down to a maximum speed of 40 kilometres per hour at the beginning and end of the school day, reducing the risk of child pedestrians being seriously injured. Don, who confirmed his school has been in discussions with the council, believes the speed of motorists travelling down Van Diemen St makes the decision a no brainer. “The volume of traffic on Waimea Rd is huge but the speed is not massive there. Van Diemen St is really

the big one for us, cars go anywhere from 50km/h to 70km/h down that hill and it’s a real risk for us,” he says. “There’s a lot of kids in this area when you bring in Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls and ourselves and even St Joseph’s School, you’re looking at 2500 kids so we’re quite keen to see that whole traffic slow down in that area.” Council spokesperson Ali Hamblin told the Nelson Weekly that new locations will only be added if they meet a certain criteria which included a high level of on-road school related activity, the average speed of passing vehicles and the number of speed related crashes outside the school in the past five years. She says the proposed additions include St Joseph’s School, Hampden St School, Nelson College, Nelson College for Girl and Nelson Intermediate School while Victory School and Tahunanui School’s zones could both be extended.

Largest family Nayland unveils new uniform competition gets bigger Phillip Rollo

A search for Nelson’s largest family has attracted so much interest competition organiser Harkin Aslankilic of Cafe Olive has upped the prize pool. Harkin decided to run the competition to celebrate families and to get them out enjoying each other over a meal this winter, realising the difficulties physically and financially of taking the entire family out to dinner. “When you’ve got a big family there are not many places you have the opportunity to go, especially if you’ve got more family coming through,” he says. “You have to find the right place. There’s so much pressure so we thought we’d give them the opportunity to feel welcome so yes there are people out there that will look after big families.” Having been inundated with entries, Harkin says he will offer a free lunch and a free breakfast to two of the other families. “It’s good to hear, absolutely that so many families have entered. We thought we’d offer the second family lunch and the third biggest family breakfast.” If you think you are a part of the region’s largest family or if you know of them, email us at editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz or call on 548 4949. There are rules though, a family is defined as two parents and their children only and the majority of the children must be under 18. To enter the competition, email editorial@ nelsonweekly.co.nz with the details of your ‘large family’. Entries close 5pm on Wednesday.

Nayland College students Jasper Lavington, 14, and Eva Hansen, 13, model the school’s new junior uniform. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

DEAL of the week

A sporty new uniform featuring the school’s colours will be worn by Nayland College’s junior students next year, replacing what can only be described as three shades of grey. The uniform was officially unveiled on Friday and the school’s board of trustees chair Tracy East believes it will stand out. “It gives us a point of difference. We are quite an individual college,” she says. The boy’s uniform features a maroon rugby-neck top and will be accompanied by pin-stripe shorts or long pants and black socks while the girl’s uniform features a scoop neck maroon t-shirt and will be worn with either a pin-stripe skirt or long pants. Plain black tights and black socks are also on the list and both boys and girls can wear a black soft-shell jacket. Tracy says the school did not intend to make it a “sporty” uniform but labelled it as “user-friendly” for the students. “Certainly speaking to the students they preferred a more casual look as well and definitely having the soft-shell jacket is a bonus.” Previously male students had to wear a triple grey number that included a polo, shorts and socks. There was also a jersey, although it was rarely worn. Girls, on the other hand, wore a white blouse and a maroon skirt with a maroon jersey. Tracy says the new uniform “gets away from the grey”. “The grey! It’s so depressing. Because there was such a strong consultation with the students hopefully they can take ownership of it. To be honest you’re not going to please everybody but I think it’s a real positive change and it will showcase Nayland really well.” Students won’t officially wear the uniform until the beginning of term one in 2014.

Community rallies to help young cancer fighter A local woman diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma is spreading the word about the lack of fertility treatment funding for cancer patients, and asking for a little bit of help in return. Rachel Burton, 20, was diagnosed with cancer at the end of April but says the biggest shock to her system was learning that the cure to her illness could also make her infertile. Rachel needs to undergo six months of chemotherapy in order to rid herself of the disease, but was told shortly after her diagnosis that the treatment could leave her unable to have children, something Rachel just couldn’t comprehend. “It was so shocking to be told I had lymphoma, but even then I didn’t realise getting better could make me infertile. I didn’t know what to think, it was crazy.” Rachel was given a good prognosis from her doctor but her dreams of one day having children were dashed when she was told that although she could have some of her eggs stored for future use, fertility treatment was no longer funded for cancer

patients. “The cost of the treatment is $10,000 and as of this year it isn’t funded. Embryo storage is funded, but I am 20 years old, I don’t have a partner that I can say to, hey, wanna make some embryos?” Rachel made the decision to take out a personal loan to pay for her own egg storage and ever since has been inundated with support from friends, family and locals from the community who want to help her pay it back. They have embarked on a mission to raise the $10,000 one way or another, and have organised a mass head shave at the Richmond Mall to do so. Alongside mates who are making the trip up from Christchurch and family friends from Nelson, Rachel will have her own head shaved too in order to raise funds. She says she is using the event to “get it over with” as chemo will eventually make her hair fall out, and loves the fact that she has so

The event is also a good chance to just raise awareness of the fact that the fertility treatment isn’t funded.

Snapchat pages shut down Your Community Newspaper

Just days after a Nelson Facebook page that posted nude, rude and offensive cellphone photos of young people was shut down, similar sites linked to schools around the region have popped up, sparking quick retaliation from local principals. Nelson Snapchat Leaked appears to have started a trend, with pages dedicated to schools such as Waimea College, Nelson College and Nayland College now online. The pages allow Snapchat app users to anonymously share photos on the web that were supposed to be private. The app was designed to automatically delete photos after being sent, but now many people, especially teenagers, are abusing the system by taking screenshots of the images and posting them online for all to see.

Garin College principal John Boyce says his school was quick to shut down a Facebook page featuring photos of Garin students as soon as it came to his attention last week, saying it is a form of bullying. “We had both parents and students come to us concerned about the page. As far as I am aware it was not one of our students who set it up, but a number of our students had liked the page.” He says the site was concerning and as a result the school was now focussing on cyber-awareness and the dangers of sharing images with one another. “We are making our students aware that when you share images, you are asking people to misuse them. It is bullying, because a lot of the photos were innocent, but they were

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz made to come across as ‘un-innocent.’” Nayland College principal Rex Smith says he wasn’t aware of any site relating to his students but says he has people at the school who constantly keep an eye out to “protect our image and our name”. “Personally I don’t understand why people would want to be sharing images like that, but I do understand that there is a strong social networking presence in our society. We constantly work on cyber-awareness and helping our students understand the concept of their digital identity.”

Internet safety expert John Parsons says bullying is an incorrect term for the behaviour. “This is harassment, designed to deliberately hurt another person, and anyone who becomes aware of someone responsible for this sort of behaviour needs to come forward and let other people know who is doing it. They are abusers, and they are creating victims.” He says expecting schools to deal with the issue on their own is not the right approach. “It is a community problem. Bullies and abusers come from home. Schools are consistently expected to deal with these situations on their own and I think that is extremely unfair. Lets see it as a community issue. We can come together on these problems.”

Whale washes up at Tahuna The gray’s beaked whale that washed up on Tahunanui Beach on Wednesday will be sent to a marine mammal burial ground at Rabbit Island. A gray’s beaked whale sighting is uncommon in this area, according to Department of Conservation area manager Martin Rodd, who believed the particular whale

came towards the shore to die. “It’s usually not a good thing that you’re seeing these particular whales in close,” says Martin. Initially, DOC fielded a report that the whale was swimming in close but within two hours it had become beached. “The people who were there helped it back out but then it beached again.”

'Townies' ignore flooded ford's warning signs Two fords on Golden Hills Rd have claimed two more cars as drivers continue to ignore warning signs when it’s in flood. Frank Goeddert who owns a tree company right next door to the Appleby fords has had to rescue four drivers already this year and blames “townies” who don’t know what a ford is. “Just five minutes ago I could see a car edging into the water and at the last second they pulled out,” he says. “Ongoing? Is it ever? Last week there were two cars and one of the drivers asked why there wasn’t a sign – well there is a sign.” A ford is a much cheaper form of river crossing than a bridge but can become impassable after heavy rain or during flood conditions, which was the case on

Tuesday June 18 Since appearing in an article in the Nelson Weekly, organisers of the Pay it Forward Facebook page say it has taken off with donations continuing to pour in now that the group has now moved into their new premises. Their new base on the corner of Muritai St and Rui St in Tahunanui is now open Tuesday and Thursday from 10am till 2pm for donations of clothing, household items and furniture. The group need a hand to keep the stock in order and are asking anyone who could offer shelving to help them out. The Pay it Forward group will be at the car boot sale this Saturday at the Motueka Trading Post from 9am onwards, and are also organising a fundraising event at the Victory Community centre on July 18. Tuesday June 18 The winning group from the Nelson district NZ Secondary Schools Chamber Music contest has been announced, with the prize going to the group, Caelestis. Each member of the group wins a $100 cash prize. Tuesday June 11 Nelson College student Jacob Bignell walked away from the New Zealand heat of the FedEx International Trade Challenge with a bevy of prizes including a $1000 scholarship for Massey University. The 80 Young Enterprise students from around the country that entered were tasked with making a market entry strategy plan for an apple based product into Australia. Jacob’s team, made up of seven others, won first place for their apple butter invention.

Tuesday June 11 Since local rifle expert Greg Couper featured in the Nelson Weekly, he has had some great feedback on his products, exporting another three of his rifle muzzle brakes to Australia and fielding inquiries from locals. Greg now has a complete range of muzzle brakes from 223 to 50 bmg, and has some new additions on the way including some titanium brakes. He is also gearing up to showcase at the Tahr show down in Christchurch and the Sika show in Taupo. Tuesday May 21 The Waimea Soroptimist group has counted the takings and thanks to generous support from the community their fashion show and breakfast, put on with the support of Beetees, raised more than $2000, with 110 people coming along to the event.

the weekend with the water levels up to two metres. Vehicles can become stuck when the water level comes above the engine, causing the air intake to suck up water. Tasman District Council remains certain that the warning signs are clear enough, but Frank has other ideas. “That sign [which shows how deep the water is] is just not good enough. The townies aren’t used to water going across. People look at Google Maps and assume everyone else must be driving through this. People have no idea how to approach it, you say pass with care but people come down at 100 km/h.” There is a ford in Nelson on Manuka St, although it is closed off when in flood.

Councillor Reese appears to have deliberately misconstrued the process we went through during our Annual Plan deliberations. Addressing the damage caused by heavy rainfall events and future-proofing our region so there is less impact when these events occur has always been and will continue to be an absolute priority for the entire council. We spent a disproportionate amount of time during this annual plan process focussing specifically on storm water. As a council we are very focussed on the issue and its widening consequence on both financial and resource requirements. To construe it any other way is quite frankly a travesty! Ruth Copeland.

New hockey turf gets laid out A new $950,000 hockey turf will be rolled out at Saxton Field this week having been delayed as a result of wet weather. The new water-based turf, which will replace the old sand turf, is jointly funded by Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and Hockey Nelson. It is being installed by Downer and is now likely to be ready next month, well into the current hockey season. Hockey Nelson president Diane Proudfoot says the initial completion date did factor in delays due to the weather and the official opening date could be July 6. “We’re looking at the

first weekend of July hopefully.” She says it has been “pretty difficult” to juggle playing all grades and matches on just one turf in the mean time, with some teams having to play games until 9:30pm on Thursday and Friday nights. “Which is pretty late. We’ve had to keep things pretty tight and we’ve managed to accommodate it and our players are supportive because they can see something happening. We know it’s not like this forever.” The late night games will stop once the second turf is installed. The turf is being supplied by Aucklandbased company Tiger Turf.

has held, is perfect for artists who don’t often get the chance to showcase their work, and more than 15 pieces walked away with new owners after the event including one artwork by an artist who hadn’t previously sold anything before.

37 Tahunanui Drive Ph: 546-5521 www.belairetavern.co.nz The Bel-Air Tavern offers Nelson locals the opportunity to try some of the best craft beers the Nelson region has to offer. Nelsonians can now enjoy a wide variety of craft beers at the Bel-Aire Tavern which boasts twenty seven taps including 18 tap beers available at present. At the Bel-Aire Tavern you will always find a beer suited to your tastes and the staff can provide you with a tasting tray allowing you to sample up to four of their beers before you make your purchase. The expertly trained staff can also provide you with advice on what beer is best suited to you. If beer is not your first choice of beverage then the Bel-Aire Tavern also has a selection of tap cider and wine straight from the barrel which allows the Bel-Aire Tavern to supply their customers with high quality wine at a very affordable price. Bel-Aire Tavern owner Ray Weston’s care in the selection of beers and wines also intertwines with his selection of other beverages. The Bel-Aire Tavern have their own unique ‘Bel-Aire’ coffee blend, blended by top

Nelson coffee roasters Zumo, providing a quality non-alcoholic option for their patrons. “It’s about giving people choice, people can come in and know they will find something they will like,” says Ray. Craft beer is still a new concept to many people but Ray has been involved in the industry for the last 30 years and was part of the second craft beer company that was established in New Zealand, Stocan Breweries from Auckland, Ray has had a passion for craft beers ever since. So what exactly is craft beer? Craft beer is naturally brewed by hobbyists through to commercial operators and is made with only water, yeast, malt and hops. “Its about brewing beer with passion and bringing non mainstream beer to the market for people to try, people like it because there are no additives

and it doesn’t make you feel bad the following day.” explains Ray. The Bel-Aire Tavern is a strong supporter of local craft beer and inside you will find a wide selection of craft beers from around the top of the South Island from breweries such as Founders, Light House, Golden Bear and Renaissance. The Bel-Aire Tavern also has an ever changing supply of craft beers from around the rest of New Zealand. Supplying Nelsonians with locally crafted beer is an excellent way to support local companies as well as show the Nelson community the quality of Nelson breweries and the excellence of local hops used in the production of local craft beer. “Nelson has long been a quality supplier of hops to breweries all over the world and this is

37 Tahunanui Drive Ph: 546-5521 www.belairetavern.co.nz something for Nelsonians to be proud of. It’s great to be able to showcase Nelson as the craft beer capital of New Zealand,” says Ray. So with an ever increasing number of craft beers how does the BelAire Tavern ensure they provide customers with what they want to drink? Ray is continually researching craft beers and draws from his vast experience in the craft beer industry. Ray has a close relationship with the craft breweries and listens to the feedback of both the breweries and his customers. Ray also supplies beers that are relevant to the seasons and the vast selection of beer available allows for customer choice as opposed to offering a set selection of beers that is usually the norm in other bars. “Large breweries no longer dictate what the consumer drinks, this has now changed through the production of craft beer, as the consumer gets the choice of what they want to drink, because of this the customer is sure to find something they like,” explains Ray. The Bel-Aire Tavern offers a unique and stylish retro, art deco themed interior in an ideal location close to the city and beach. In the warm summer months you can take advantage of the outside garden bar that is surrounded by a well maintained garden and furnished by

beautifully crafted handmade picnic tables. The Bel-Aire Tavern is an ideal spot to sink a refreshing cold pint at the end of a hot summer’s day at the beach. The Bel-Aire Tavern is equally as good in the cold winter months as the knowledgeable bar staff can supply you with a wintry drop that is sure to warm up your insides. Enjoy your pint of craft beer in a warm and friendly atmosphere where you can mingle with the friendly locals in the comfort of this uniquely styled location. The Bel-Aire Tavern also features a ‘snug’ room that is an ideal setting to host a private function or celebration. The ‘snug’ is tucked away from the rest of the bar offering a private and comfortable Relax and enjoy the sun in the spacious courtyard with your favourite drop. location for up to twenty people. The Bel-Air Tavern will soon be introducing live music to further entertain its guests. 37 Tahunanui Drive Ph: 546-5521 www.belairetavern.co.nz has been in Ray’s vision for an independent craft tavern over the last few years and his hunch on the location is beginning to pay off with an increasing number of patrons coming in for a drink every week. The social atmosphere allows for a chilled out drinking environment with no distractions such as poker machines or intrusive music, this allows for people to engage in conversation ensuring a welcoming and social location to enjoy a quality local beverage. “It’s the old social media back in a new environment,” explains Ray. • It’s OK to take time out to enjoy your garden! The time to do things is when you have time, rather than scramble about at the right time to do the things that you are told to do. If you follow instructions too closely, you will feel as though you are in the army. Just imagine going about your plot with a “HUP 2, 3! CUT 2,3! TRIM 2,3! DIG 2,3! WEED 2, 3! ATTENTION!!! You wouldn’t want to see another green leaf for the rest of your life. Yes, there is a general time to do things but use common sense about it. If the garlic doesn’t get planted on the traditional shortest day, it won’t matter. There is still plenty of time left. If some of the roses miss out on a pruning it doesn’t matter. You can always attend to the neglected fellows first next season, or better still give them an early summer prune when you have time. If you are a bit late with the potatoes, it doesn’t matter. Potatoes just love to grow! So pop them in anyway, and don’t worry about it. Take time to enjoy. • It’s ok to make mistakes. It’s the most reliable way to learn. I plan an experiment with the potatoes this season. I’m going to plant three rows. The middle row will be planted in the traditional way. On either side of this row will be placed a line of pea straw bales still held together with twine. But, under the bales the potatoes will be placed, with the hope that they will grow up through the pea straw and I won’t have to mould these rows. The other cunning little plan is that if we get a late frost, the middle row will be safe as houses, because I

will drape frost cloth from one bale to the next. The other two rows of potatoes will still be wending their way up through the bales and will miss the inclement weather. Well, what do you think of that idea? Perhaps experienced gardeners might like to pass on their thoughts on the matter. • It’s ok to do what you want in your garden. You don’t have to follow the rules if you don’t want to. We are told that planting must be done in 3s or 5s or any odd numbers. But why? I know a gardener who loves matching pairs. She loves a structured look and loves to wander between plantings of the same number on both sides. It is called The Mirror Look I believe. I feel as though I am watching a tennis match with my head bobbing about from side to side. But she loves it and that is what matters. • I frequently pass a delightful little garden which seems to be planted with anything that comes to hand. The house is hard up to the street, so there is very little space to be used. But the garden grows a short climber, a couple of hollyhocks, some pretty annuals and a few geraniums. Some bricks are placed at each and of the garden as well as forming a pathway to the door, and a hand full of smooth round stones form a casual little line to nowhere in particular. This gardener has not followed any rules, and has expressed her own individuality. I pause each time I pass and ponder about the lady who created it. That is what gardening is all about.

Brownies help with food collection A group of Atawhai Brownies have been busy collecting food for the Salvation Army’s food bank over the past few weeks. Karen Bailey says the group of girls, aged 7-9 get involved in the community twice a year. “The girls came up with this idea. I said to them what should we do to help people locally and they had seen the collection boxes at the supermarket,” she says.

Representatives from the Salvation Army had spoken to the girls about the project and will explain to them at the next catch up about where the collected food goes. Karen says the Atawhai community had really got in behind the collection. “The neighbours and the school got involved and I’m really pleased that all of the girls got stuck in and have done their bit to help.”

Bobby moved to New Zealand 16 years ago and has been at the Indian Cafe since the doors opened more than 11 years ago. He brought with him some of the finest recipes and cooking techniques of Indian cuisine. Among the menu are specialty dishes including Kashmiri Kebab, cooked Bobby Chapagai to perfection in the Tandoor oven and Fish Masala with fresh fish fillets cooked with traditional herbs and spices. “Our food is traditionally cooked and all meals are made fresh from scratch in a new pan, it takes a long time and we work hard but you can taste the flavour when it’s produced this way,” says Bobby. Because St John is a charity, it relies on donations and fundraising to deliver its services and area executive officer Sarah McCabe says the scheme is the perfect way to support St John as all the money will stay in the community. "If you're a supporter, no matter where you go in New Zealand and you need the ambulance, you will be covered," she says.

Recognised most for its ambulance service, St John also provides first aid coverage at public events, a health shuttle that transports people to and from healthrelated appointments, a telephone friendship service for the community, youth programmes and ‘Friends of the Emergency Department’ which gives comfort to patients in Nelson Hospital. St John's annual appeal began this week with collectors based at New World Stoke and New World Nelson.

ferent playing field. They beat us quite easily in the first round so I would've thought they'd be quite confident going into it." Peter highlighted Tasman Makos lock Alex Ainley as Wanderers' biggest asset along with backs Sione Holani, Trael Joass and Kerehama Barrett. Nelson's season was always going to be a battle when factoring in the number of injuries and departures from last year's championship winning campaign. But the injury toll is still mounting with Mitchell out for the season with a broken jaw while last year's captain Craig Moore will be attending a wedding and will miss the match. "It's tough but it's just how this season has been for us really. We're like two steps forward, three steps back every week we seem to get a major injury." While the time and venue of the fixture is unconfirmed, it is likely to be at Trafalgar Park on Saturday at 3pm.

Nelson has a chance to defend the Bayleys Tasman Trophy this weekend, earning a date in the finals with Wanderers. It is the second time in as many years that Galbraith Nelson will contest the competition's final, having surpassed top Blenheim side Central 24-10 at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. Nelson got off to a perfect start with hooker Mitchell Thwaites and fly half James Lash scoring first half tries. But the side would only add more points from the boot of David Havili as conditions restricted a fast flowing game. Speaking ahead of the final, Nelson coach Peter Grigg is well aware of the strengths Wanderers possess, as the side is currently undefeated this season and says his side's playoff experience would not count for much. "What happened last year doesn't really matter at all," he says. "It's a dif-

Giants lift Pace in final quarter Your Community Newspaper

Josh Pace had a season high 35 points as the Fico Finance Nelson Giants avoided a potential banana skin on Saturday night. Having finally woken from their slumber late in the game, the Nelson Giants went on a 24-7 run to topple bottom of the table Super City Rangers 97-84 in a closer than expected fixture. Giants coach Liam Flynn got a chance to unleash the squad's youngsters late in the fourth quarter, after the big guns saved face, turning the 69-65 third quarter score into an unassailable lead. When asked post-match whether the Rangers were better than its NBL position says, or whether the Giants just weren't feeling it on Saturday, Liam was quick to confirm "it was a bit of both". "They play hard, they never take possession off and we were sloppy with the ball. They also shot from the three point line better than they have all season and we shot it worse," he says.

Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

"But a win is a win so we'll take it and move on." It was a frustrating night for the fans, who watched as fast break after fast break resulted in a turnover. "You got to nail your opportunities on the fast break and a lot of our turnovers came when it was broken play. You got to get those easy points, it's fair to say we were sloppy with the ball tonight." But the crowd was finally able to come alive in the fourth quarter, watching a clinical 28 point performance while the Rangers were restricted to just 19. "I don't know what the stats were for turnovers in the fourth quarter but I'm sure they were better and I think we defended the paint better." Josh's 35 point haul, combined with 17 rebounds, made him an obvious choice for man of the

match while fellow import Erron Maxey also had a significant contribution with 23 points. Liam says it was "great" to give young players Angus Riley, Zeb Lovell and debutant Akira Marsters game time in the dying stages of the game with Akira also managing to score his first points for the team. The trio finished the match along with Sam Dempster and Rory Fannon. "They work really hard during the week and it's great that they get the reward and get on the floor." The Giants take on the Hawke's Bay Hawks and the defending champions Wellington Saints this weekend before returning to face the Southland Sharks in the final home game of the season. Nelson has already sealed a spot in the playoff series which is being held in Napier this year which means no team will have home court advantage. The only side outside of the top four that still has a slim chance of reaching the playoffs is the Manawatu Jets.

The young players are provided with expert coaching right through from their local club teams to rep teams and then into the Football and National Training Centres. Suburbs hold onto top spot Ben Wright added two more goals to his season tally as the powerful forward kept AMI Nelson Suburbs on top of the Mainland Premier League standings by beating Halswell United 2-0 on Sunday. With Suburbs scheduled to play its game on Sunday, the side had already shifted back down to third place prior to kickoff as both Cashmere Technical and Ferrymead Bays recorded wins the day before. But the side's title credentials remain intact after a comfortable

victory which saw Coey Turipa keep his eighth clean sheet of the campaign with the defensive line looking impossible to break down yet again. Right back Sam Ayers had one of his strongest performances since returning from overseas while Neil Connell and Mark Johnston put in notable shifts at the back. Ben now has eight goals this season. Nelson Suburbs will face Nomads United in Christchurch this weekend.

Rival Cougars player Renee Bouzaid juggles the ball in the rain on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Rival Cougars win in the rain The rain was definitely the dominant factor in Nelson Netball on Saturday, so much so only senior grades were played at Saxton Courts. Conditions were far from perfect for the 10am round when Rival Cougars met Waimea College B. To their credit both teams played good, steady, wet weather netball – short chest passes were the order of the day which eliminated dropped ball and footwork calls. The teams could not be separated at the first break (9 all) or the second (16 all). Rival’s shooters Kelly Jenkins and Renee Bouzaid had the perfect record for the first half when they did not miss a shot, while Waimea’s shooters matched the conversion tally they did not match

the accuracy. Rival played steady netball through the court, treasuring possession with Dana Weir and Lisa Thompson working hard to provide quality ball to their shooters. Dana displayed nice vision for precision feeds. Lauren Heaphy was industrious at goal defence while the tall timber in goal keep, Renee McConanchie and Jasmin Price, toiled, to rebound strongly and deny Waimea the second opportunity. Waimea had their nose in front by a solitary goal going into the final quarter, however a display of some long range shooting in

difficult conditions by Kelly saw Rival claim a 33-28 victory. GRADE 2: A blanket could be thrown over the six teams competing in Grade 2 when each of the three games had only a four goal margin. Richmond Red could have expected a win, having been relegated from Grade 1, however Jacks Red put up a great fight before going down 27-31. Nayland College repeated their performance from the previous week when they accounted for Garin College Hangar 58 25-21. Promoted Stoke Accessman played a structured game to take a 30-26 win over Suburban Blue. So if round one is anything to go by, there are some great encounters to look forward to.

Solid as a rock That’s what we need. Someone who can be part of our sales team, who’s really just two things, very honest and solid as a rock. Dependable. If you have these two attributes we can do the rest. Maybe its time for a change or maybe you are just back into the workforce? We offer a pretty exciting full time role as an account manager with our market leading, locally owned, newspapers. We will give you all the training and support, you just bring the enthusiasm and lets see what we can achieve. It’s a great job really, no weekend work, pretty good wages, well established newspapers, great team in a politically incorrect environment where we still enjoy a joke, even a really sick one, but we take our role seriously in the market and we are very professional. Immediate start and the role is salaried with incentives. So if you would like to be part of our team send us your resume and don’t muck around, get it in now. Weekly
