Hospital rebuild won’t be speedy MAX FRETHEY Nelson Hospital is set to get a slice of $1.3 billion to redevelop its buildings, as part of the Government’s Budget 2022, with construction expected to break

ground before the end of the parliamentary term. $1.3 billion has been put aside over the next two years for health capital investments around the country and Nelson Hospital is set to get part of the investment.

“We’re making the investments needed to modernise hospitals,” Minister of Health Andrew Little says. “This year’s health infrastructure budget delivers critical investment for rebuilds of hospitals in Whangārei, Nelson and

Hillmorton.” In 2021, the budget for redevelopment of Nelson Hospital was estimated at about $713 million but it is understood that the total cost would exceed that. Nelson MP Rachel Boyack says

it’s well-known that Nelson Hospital is earthquake-prone and needs a significant upgrade to provide for our aging and growing population.

Dog tracked eight days after going missing JENNY NICHOLSON When Jolene Horrell’s dog Midnight went missing and was still missing eight days later, she was heartbroken. “We have three dogs, and they are all cherished members of the family,” she says. “I was grieving all eight days.” Midnight and their fox terrier had both wandered away from the house at 8am but by 2pm the terrier returned. Family, friends, and members of the community looked for Midnight. “We tried a drone, a tracking collar and a go-pro on the foxy to see where she went, but no luck.” She was contacted by Debbie Richards, a stranger, who had previously had her lost dog tracked by Don Schwass and his dog. Jolene contacted Don and says, from the start he understood her grief and anxiety, as well as what may be going on in the

Nelson Hospital rebuild certain but not speedy FROM PAGE 1 Nelson Hospital’s George Manson block was identified as the worst hospital building in the country following a nationwide stocktake of the country’s hospitals by then-Minister of Health David Clark. “That put us at the top of the list for funding,” Rachel says. No specific amount of money has been allocated to Nelson Hospital, but funds will go towards redevelopment planning for the hospital which has needed infrastructure upgrades for some years. Rachel says that the project should break ground for its construction before the end of the current parliamentary term. “We’ve got that certainty to be able to begin the project.” However, Rachel warns that the

new building’s construction will not be a speedy process with funding expected to come from multiple budgets over the next few years. “It will not be finished quickly; it needs to be built properly.” Rachel says that a rebuild of Nelson Hospital would be the largest capital project in Nelson in a generation and would provide jobs as the region recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic. “We are just ensuring that we are getting on with that really important investment that had been neglected for a long time.” Rachel says there are many other benefits that Nelsonians will see from the 2022 budget. “We have responded to the costof-living crisis.” Every New Zealander earning under $70,000 and who doesn’t qualify for the Winter Energy

Card holders. The fuel tax reduction of 25 cents a litre has also been extended for two months. The First Home Grant caps have also been raised for Nelson Tasman, which increases the value of

homes that can be bought or built for recipients of the grant. “We know that Nelson is one of the regional centres that has real challenges around housing affordability,” Rachel says. For existing homes, the grant cap has been increased from $525,000 to $650,000 and for new builds it has increased from $600,000 to $875,000. The price cap will also be removed entirely from the First Home Loan scheme from June which means all residential properties being bought by eligible first home buyers can make use of the loan. Rachel hopes the new changes will make getting a first home easier for Nelsonians. “Having been through this myself, I know how difficult it can be for first home buyers,” Rachel says.

Support workers: ‘We are not valued’ SARA HOLLYMAN Nelson support workers and union members have called the Government’s offer of a $0.70 pay increase ‘backward’. The Care and Support Workers (Pay Equity) Settlement Act, passed in 2017, and delivered $2 billion in wage rises to care workers in residential aged care facilities, as well as those who care for elderly, disabled and injured people in their own homes. The historic pay deal took years of activism and two years of negotiations but is due to expire in July, with no continued agreement in place. This has left the affected workers angry, disappointed and once again, undervalued. Local support workers say it is near-impossible to attract new staff into the industry as it is not seen as a viable career option due to its low pay and heavy workload. “Everything that we achieved five years ago is getting kicked to the kerb – these guys are actually going backwards,” says PSA Top of the South organiser Kate Davis. Starting rate is $21.68 – just $0.48 more than minimum wage. “It means we are going to be constantly trying to recruit people to this industry because they don’t see a career path, we

Dog missing for eight days FROM PAGE 1 dog’s mind. Don was happy to look for Midnight. He asked Jolene to stop all other searches so the area would be as clear as possible for his dog the next morning. “Because Midnight went missing at 8am, I wanted to start looking at the same time. It’s best to leave at the same time, if possible,” Don says. “The property was huge and although we do a 360-degree search, I researched the wind on the day he went missing. It happened the wind was going the same way. Dogs go into the wind nine out of ten times.” Don searched with his dog Piper, making notes of the places the dog showed interest in. Two and a half hours into the search, Midnight was found not far from home. Jolene says it was overwhelming, because she had really thought her dog had died. Although Midnight had lost about 4kg, he showed no sign of distress or injury. Don has a unique skillset having volunteered with Nelson LandSAR for more than 30 years, along with additional tracker training in

the United States. He says searching for people or animals is partly about that skillset and partly perseverance. While looking for Jolene’s dog wasn’t part of his LandSAR work, it was something he was happy to do. He says searching for people and animals is all about keeping families together. He was recently part of a search for a woman on Mount Duppa. In that search he was out walking from 9pm - 8am with one 840m stretch of dense bush taking two hours to navigate through. “The emotion I saw on Jolene’s face when I tracked her dog was the same as the husband of the rescued woman when they were reunited,” Don says. “Pets are someone’s mate, their best friends.” Jolene says she cannot express the enormous relief, as well as the immense admiration she has for Don and Piper’s abilities. “What a team of greatness,” she says. “Midnight’s a bit skinner, a bit hungrier and a bit thirstier than before her adventure, but she’s still managed to retain all her smoochiness and smelliness. She hasn’t moved from lying sprawled in front of the fire for days.”

Bringing Richmond streets to life STAFF REPORTER The Suter Art Gallery has launched a new ArtWalk in Richmond town centre, an extension of the successful Nelson City Centre ArtWalk project by Make/Shift Spaces. Gallery director Julie Catchpole has chosen works from the permanent collection to be replicated and magnified for blank walls across the region to create a unique outdoor exhibition. Expect to see pieces from celebrated artists such as Leo Bensemann, Toss Woollaston, Sally Burton, and Irvine Major. Backed by the Tasman District Council, local businesses and supporters, the first piece was put up at Richmond Library last Tuesday. Tasman mayor Tim King was on site to see the initial artworks being installed. “I think this is one of the most innovative ideas to come across my desk. I look forward to seeing these major artworks displayed on the walls of Richmond and eventually Motueka, Māpua, Tākaka and beyond,” he says. Julie says the gallery is always looking for ways to extend its reach beyond its walls.

Photo: Martin De Ruyter. “The Suter’s Tasman ArtWalk will be a visual journey through our region; stories, people, places, history and outstanding scenery, it’s very exciting.” The images are printed onto aluminium and then securely attached to the sides of buildings around the city. The Suter will even ‘spend a penny’ at the public toilets in Warring Carpark, with their investment seeing a visually striking artwork by Ian Scott installed on the exterior wall. The Suter’s Tasman ArtWalk

aims to make art an engaging experience for as many people as possible and will see the artworks installed at various locations around the region. Initially, art will appear on the streets of Richmond, then extend to Motueka, Golden Bay and other centres in Tasman. Speedy Signs are supporting the project by printing and installing the large-scale pieces, with art by John Gully, Irvine Major, Jean Joyes aka Margaret Major, and Ian Scott already on display.

Richmond KFC work has resumed JO KENT Groundworks at Richmond’s KFC site have resumed with Tasman District Council just weeks away from giving final resource consent sign off. Communications manager for TDC, Chris Choat, says initial building consent was granted and issued on 15 September 2021. “There was an amendment to that consent surrounding drainage, which has now been granted and issued on 11 April 2022. At this stage we have not conducted any inspections relating to this consent.” Tinline Properties Ltd, which owns Richmond Mall, is behind the build, planned for the site adjacent to Kmart on Talbot St. Chief executive Jamie Gaskell says the delay is frustrating as it’s out of their hands. “Where it’s currently being held up is that council haven’t yet provided their full resource consent for the building. We are still working through some drainage issues.” The proposal is for a KFC

Donut King opens at Richmond Mall

A brand-new donut stand next to Pak ‘n’ Save in Richmond Mall opened last week and franchisee Kelly Kinaston says she’s thrilled to finally be open. “It’s been a bit of a wait due to ongoing delays with building the site, so I’m just pleased to finally be able to start selling.” The opening was originally intended for Saturday 14 May, but was postponed until Tuesday to begin trading.

The Talbot St site that will soon be home to a KFC. Photo: Jo Kent. with a gross floor area of 250 square metres, 28 car parks and a drive-thru that goes behind the building with “queueing capacity for seven spaces”. Tinline were given consent to start groundworks on the 2048 square metre site in late May 2021. “That’s the frustration with council, you can’t force them to move or force things to happen. We’ve been told the site inspection is imminent, which is why they’ve approved us to continue with

groundworks on site.” He says, ultimately, there is always a reason for hold-ups in the property and construction trade, and never more so than during a pandemic. “Aside from KFC there is lots happening out there and it’s all good growth for Richmond. We are keen to keep pushing forward and make it happen sooner rather than later.” Groundworks initially began on the site last year when it was cleared of contaminated

soil across the two properties which had previously stood there. The houses had been built on the site of a former timber treatment facility. Although no concentrations of contaminants above the national environmental standard were found in a detailed site investigation by Tasman Environmental Management in 2019, some arsenic and lead concentrations were above the Nelson Tasman clean fill acceptance criteria.

The popular café on Richmond’s Bateup Rd has closed while owner Happy Shergill takes time to deal with chronic health issues. Happy was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia and has reached a point when he needs to focus on his recovery. “In addition to that, the challenges of starting and running a hospitality business in the environment of the last two years has been huge and have taken a toll,” says Happy. “It is heartbreaking to say goodbye, but it is the best decision for now.” There is no set date to reopen.

Kiwis too hard to catch for Nelson Lakes release

Load control saves you money Load control is a mechanism that Network Tasman and many other lines companies use to manage the demand that heating water places on the electricity network during ‘peak’ demand periods, typically in the morning and early evening on the coldest winter days. Load control allows Network Tasman to shut off devices such as electrical hot water cylinders for a short time during the periods of highest demand. As a result Network Tasman can keep costs down and pass those savings on to our consumers. Cheaper prices for water heating are shown on your electricity bill as a line called ‘controlled’ or ‘economy’. Controlling the load in this way doesn’t impact on the way you use your hot water e.g. to wash your dishes, do laundry or have showers and baths. Our aim is to ensure that you don’t even notice that load control is being used.

Two great spotted kiwi were added to the Nelson Lakes National Park kiwi population earlier this month as part of an effort to increase the genetic diversity of the regional species. The Department of Conservation had planned to relocate 10-12 kiwi from the Gunner Downs area of Kahurangi National Park to the Nelson Lakes Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project areas. However, moving further birds has been postponed until next year after kiwi in the area proved unexpectedly difficult to catch. DOC Nelson Lakes senior biodiversity ranger Dr Melissa Griffin says an experienced kiwi catching team spent three days and two nights in the Gunner Downs area working on catching kiwi. However, a particular combination of difficult terrain and unusual bird behaviours made the catching conditions tricky. “While it’s unfortunate not to have been able to release as many birds as planned, it’s a

Your advanced meter will display “LC” if hot water heating is switched off by our load control system. “LC1” will be displayed if hot water heating is enabled. Visit www.networktasman.co.nz to see if load control is in place.

Load control helps save consumers money because Network Tasman doesn’t have to invest so much money upgrading the capacity of its local network to cope with ever-increasing peaks during network busy hours. “As an example,” says Network Tasman’s Regulatory and Commercial Manager, Daniel Vincent, “in the coming years we will need to build a new grid exit point in Brightwater. If we didn’t have load control, we would have needed to make this $40 million investment years earlier and customers would already be paying for that investment in their power bill. “Deferring investment keeps our network at a level that is in line with what the community actually needs and, in turn, keeps electricity prices down. It also means we can take advantage of developing technology and innovation as alternatives to traditional network supply become available. “Management of peak load through hot water load control by Network Tasman saves the company and its customers a significant amount of money every year.”

Host families needed for international students JENNY NICHOLSON Local schools are keen for new homestay families to put their hand up to welcome international students as New Zealand’s borders open back up. Garin College international director Diana Murdoch says the Government announcement about bringing forward the date for all new international students from October to July, makes it even more important to rebuild our homestay programmes as quickly as possible. Diana says students spend more time at home than at school so matching students with the right families is very important. “We need to offer these students good homes,” Diana says. “It’s someone else’s son or daughter.” The pandemic stopped new international students coming into New Zealand and colleges saw a significant drop in numbers. They are now in a rebuilding phase, as many families who have previous-

ly hosted are unavailable. Eighteen-year-old Sho Kurimoto arrived in New Zealand in January 2020 and has been living in his current homestay for six months. While some students find kiwi food a challenge, Sho says he likes trying our food. “I never ate lamb before. I like it and want to eat it when I go back to Japan,” Sho says. Initially he felt very nervous about staying with someone because he couldn’t understand them, but they managed to communicate through gestures. He says the most important thing is respect; that the homestay family respects the student and the student respects the family. Joy Gowan has been a homestay host for years and has had more than 100 students through her home. One of her past students stayed on in Nelson, and is now married with children. Joy is Nana Joy to the children. For anyone interested in hosting a student please phone 03 543 9498.

Two year 8 students from Waimea Intermediate School will have their artwork exhibited internationally as part of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and New Zealand. This year also marks the 125th birthday of New Zealander and friend of China, Rewi Alley, who made a great contribution to the people of Hubei Province. To celebrate the anniversaries, Hubei will run a series of activities as part of New Zealand Week, and Waimea Intermediate has been asked to participate. Teacher Emma Panting says she was contacted by the Nelson branch of the NZ China Friendship Society (NZCFS) about contributing student artwork. “My students created some fabulous pieces for this at the end of last term and Sami Thomson and Lucy Cameron have had their particular works selected to be exhibited both here and in Nelson’s sister city, Huangshi.” The theme of the paintings was ‘The same white cloud, the same blue sky’ and the art was sent to China digitally for selection. Sami says she was inspired by Nelson’s Christ Church Cathedral for her submission. “I wanted to show the contrast between city architecture,” she says. “So I drew the cathedral and a typical Chinese building which I’d Googled.” Alternatively, Lucy focused on the friendship and connection elements in her painting. “I chose two hands to symbolise the coming together of two cities.” President of the NZCFS, Barbara Markland, says the paintings will be exhibited in related city libraries and schools in Wuhan and some other cities of Hubei province in late May during the New Zealand Week period. “After that, those paintings will be permanently collected by the Hubei Provincial Library. Waimea Intermediate School and Richmond Primary School agreed to participate and it is hoped the original paintings will be displayed in Nelson during China Week during September.” Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese has been invited to attend a joint video conference of HubeiNew Zealand sister cities and deliver a speech, discussing how to deepen friendly exchanges and cooperation between the two countries. “We have been advised that during the New Zealand Week period, ‘Rewalking the road that Rewi Alley walked’ will take place in the Bund Park in Wuhan. “New Zealand Ambassador to China, Clare Fearnley, and relatives of Rewi Alley will all attend and walk 1250 steps to commemorate the 125th birthday of Rewi Alley,” Barbara says. A joint seminar themed by ‘Opportunities and challenges of economic and trade cooperation between central China and New Zealand’ will be held in Wuhan in late May, which concerned specialists, scholars and entrepreneurs will attend and give speeches.

If your household is at all like ours you may find that over the years you have had the opportunity to attempt to train a number of animals. Maybe a dog, a cat, a bird or even something more unique. Something that is far harder to train however is our tongue. We all have one, but we all have various levels of success in taming that thing. The book of Proverbs in the bible says, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” What this is reminding us of is that the words we speak produce fruit, either positively or negatively. What do you tend towards? In our interactions with others, with our children, our spouses, our families and beyond, do we speak life and encouragement or do we instead tend towards negativity and putdowns leaving a sour taste in others’ mouths. Let’s choose today, with our words and our actions, to be encouragers and champions of others, speaking words of life, not death.

Local History exploring our

Proudly brought to you by...

Richmond’s old police station – Part one The first resident constable was Willian Standon who combined his police duties with that of Postmaster and owned a small store and news agency. He lived on five acres in central Wensley Rd and served from 1845 until 1854. The first lock-up was a small mud hut on the corner of Wensley Rd and Crescent St. In 1860 another small jail, built of kauri and costing $80, was erected on the corner of Wensley Rd and Oxford St. Constable James Cameron, who was in charge from 1902 until 1912, considered that the police house and station should be close to the lock-up and in 1908 these buildings were gazetted. Richmond’s constables were part of the community and some had distinct personalities. John Ingram, who served

The old jail as it looked in 1983 after the house was turned into flats. Photo: TDC. from 1892-1902, was known for 14 and a half years before as ‘Grip’ as he’d grab people leaving in 1942 to become by the shoulder and say “Ah jailer in Nelson. An Irishman with five daughters, he loved grips you now.” James Cameron was very talking to children but was musical and the leader of the strict about maintaining the local band, Gus Falconbridge law. After serving for over 20 was keen about athletics. years in the Nelson district, Henry O’Neill wore a tweed he retired in 1943. cap and cycled everywhere. By 1901 the population had Constable Henry O’Neill was grown to 543, but the crime one who became a ‘fixture’ in rate was low. A man drowned Richmond, as he served there in the bath at the Star and

Garter Hotel in 1908 and there were minor cases of theft and drunkenness, but otherwise the policeman’s lot in Richmond was a happy one. From 1845-1902, six constables served in the area. In the four years from 1925 there were only two crimes a year, consisting of two cases of arson, two of drunkenness and several thefts. In the early 1930s, the crime rate increased to five to seven cases a year and the appearance of more motor traffic brought prosecutions for negligent driving. Part two will run in next week’s Waimea Weekly. Extracted from The Nelson Police – the story of the Nelson Police District 1841 – 1986 by June E Neale.

Opinion Care industry in crisis

The New Zealand care industry is in crisis, due to a range of factors. Notably: staff shortages, work stress, a lack of acknowledgment or appreciation and appallingly low pay rates. There are in excess of 3000 job vacancies in the care sector nationally and 86 vacancies in the Nelson region alone. Not surprising when you realise that entry level wage rates in my industry are mere cents above minimum wage and below the living wage. If we focus on the Nelson region only, we can be sure that unless addressed immediately the situation here will worsen exponentially. Nelson has a rapidly aging population and due to its appeal as a desirable place to retire this means that we need a workforce of skilled, compassionate, dedicated staff to ensure that older people are able to be cared for, ideally in their own homes. Independence, pride and dignity are important to us all and certainly no less so to the aged.

sara@topsouthmedia.co.nz facebook.com/waimeaweekly topsouthmedia.co.nz

Residing in their own home is a huge part of this independence, but that is not an option if we don’t have the skilled people, well paid and valued to make this possible. I’m a support worker employed in a Nelson community house (of which there are approximately 100 in Nelson). This dwelling is home to several young people who have a variety of conditions which can make life difficult for them. These conditions are both mental and physical, but all require care monitoring and attention. Yes, I know I’ve jumped from older people to younger people but this because illness, infirmity and ailments exist across the whole age spectrum. Home care, residential care, institutional care all require CARE GIVERS. The most vulnerable members of any society are those unable to care for themselves and a measure of civil society is its willingness to provide the best support possible for its disadvantaged citizens. On any average day a care worker will provide the most intimate

cares, including showering, toileting, feeding, dispensing medication (serious pharmaceuticals), cooking, cleaning, laundry, comforting, consoling, calming, driving, entertaining and interacting. On that same average day, the care worker may subjected to violence, abuse, fatigue, stress and bullying. Care workers accept that all of the above are part of the job, but what care workers don’t and won’t accept is that crap money is a fair recompense for a skill which is in perilously short supply but in massively high demand. We do an important job. We care about and care for your most precious. If not us, then who will care for you, when you need support? I appeal to the populace- support our campaign for increased wages. This is a serious issue, so please take us seriously. Pay us what we deserve and are worth. The community will get it back tenfold. And to my colleagues and friends I say; Kia kaha keep fighting for what we are worth. Michael Corcoran

Tasman Leisure

Swim lessons are a fun way to spend quality time with your baby/toddler, offering classes from six months of age. Together in the water, parent and child participate in a range of fun and stimulating activities designed to gain confidence in the water, teach water safety and emergent swimming skills. All activities are based around the child’s current development and are also designed to help enhance development in the three key areas: physical, cognitive and emotional. It is a proven fact that children learn through play, and the programme provides this opportunity, children can experience the joy of water in a safe, warm and controlled environment. Babies are not born with a fear of water, so starting swimming at a young age is the ideal time to get them into a fun aquatic environment, where they will learn to associate the pool and swimming as a fun activity. All of the Magic Moment levels receive unlimited free pool access whilst enrolled in lessons. Jumpin, Nelson’s preschool playground area.

The nurturing and provision of quality education and care is pivotal to the ethos of the team at locally based childcare provider Nurture@Home. The children become an extension of our own whanau and an educator can help to guide a child’s interests more closely, helping to raise a more well-rounded and happier child. I believe children really thrive in this setting.” The team are always on the

Juicies boss leaves family business JO KENT It’s all change at Brightwater’s Tasman Bay Food Co. with the departure of managing director Marina Hirst Tristram after 18 years at the business. Marina has been the MD for the last five years, but recently left to start a new role at Kono. “I’m super excited to join Kono as the general manager, sales and marketing, and contribute to an organisation that has won-

derful people, beautiful products and values I share.” Her dad, Brian Hirst, set up Tasman Bay Food Co. more than 30 years ago with a vision to create an innovative food production business using healthy produce from the Nelson region. The business now churns out Juicies, Moosies, Speedway Sauce and Dr Feelgood Frozen Pops for markets across Australasia, Asia and the Middle East.

New chief executive Simon Thomas will take over from Marina. Simon has worked for New Zealand King Salmon for 15 years and is a self-confessed foodie. “I am very excited to be joining the team and learning more about the products. Having lived in Nelson for 15 years we are very settled here, and I couldn’t be happier to be joining a company utilising locally grown produce.”

Waimea College Year 8 students have been hitting the water in Kaiteriteri as part of the school’s dedication to Waka Ama. All 342 students were able to take part. Reuben Sanders and Caleb Newton both enjoyed racing but were also fascinated learning how wakas were originally made. Caleb says they learned that a tree would be chosen and tagged, and when the tree was large enough it was cut down and the waka was crafted from that one tree where it fell. Once it was complete, it was rolled to the nearest water. He says the water at Kaiteriteri was calm, but he couldn’t imagine what it would be like crossing the ocean in the waka. Debra found love and career on the trails JENNY NICHOLSON Debra Howell found love and a new career hiking trails in New Zealand and South America. In the summers of 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 she tramped the Te Araroa Trail, walking from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Walking up to 13 hours a day, she realised she needed light gear but couldn’t find what she wanted in New Zealand. “I still need the essentials when tramping. There is a line between stupid and safe, and I don’t cross that line,” Debra says. “But I realised I could go further and enjoy it more if I carried less weight.” Her next venture was the 4,270 km Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in America. She picked up some lighter gear in America and realised the difference it made. However, that trek wasn’t drama free. She developed a pulmonary embolism 300 km before the end of the trail and spent three days in hospital. The 143-day Appalachian Trail (AT) came next and on day two of the walk she met American Cody Howell. The couple fell in love, got married and shifted back to Spring Grove where Debra started making her own tramping gear. The first thing she made was a quilt, a lighter substitute for a sleeping bag. She then went on to make their packs, rain jacket, clothes, and a two-and-a-half man tent weighing just on a kg. “I had been sewing all my life,” Debra says. “By five or six I was sewing clothes for Barbies.” Having worked as a civil engineer helped with designing the products. In September 2021 they started Kiwi Ultralight selling quilts, packs, and bush cloths both in New Zealand and overseas. “Bush cloths are designed for women to use if they need to pee on the trail,” Debra says. “It’s an alternative to shaking dry or littering with toilet paper.” Debra has been making all their products.

Building a strong team from the ground up With over 20 years in the painting trade, Brumwell Painting owner operator Adam Brumwell knows exactly what it takes to deliver a quality service to his clients. He strongly believes in the value of teaching a craft well and it shows, with the proficient and experienced team he has created over his years as a local business owner. “Painting as a trade is growing in popularity and there is lots of great young people keen to get into it, especially females, over the last few years which I think has been great for the industry. Apprentices are completely new to the trade and it’s great to teach them correctly from the beginning, and in time they become great tradespeople. Two of our staff that have been apprentices with us are now leading teams on jobs, which is rewarding to see.” Based in Richmond, and covering the wider Nelson Tasman region, the small familyowned business has grown from strength to strength since its inception 13 years ago, and

Adam credits this success to the passionate and caring attitude of his team. “I think we have grown the way we have in clients because of the crew that we have. I try to look for people who are enthusiastic about the trade and enjoy their work, as well as being friendly and understanding of the potential disruption our work can impose upon a client’s home.” Adam personally oversees each project and prides himself on providing top-quality workmanship and the ability to provide a strong network of trusted contractors. “We do a really wide variety of work, from the interior and exterior of large heritage villas and brand-new architectural homes to commercial buildings, a wall in a bathroom, or similar small jobs. I never turn down work, if we can complete it in the required timeframe, and aim to make every client a repeat client.” Brumwell Painting offers a wide range of services specialising in painting roofs of all shapes and sizes, from simple and easy-

to-access single-storey homes to steeply pitched, multi-level, complex homes which require a lot of planning and scaffolding. As well as painting services, Adam says the business offers clients an option to use Paint Stripper Pro for weatherboard homes. “We complete a lot of old weatherboard houses with old boards that have often been neglected over the years. We give clients the option for us to use the Paint Stripper Pro to strip those boards back to bare wood. This in effect gives you a blank canvas to start from so you don’t have to deal with an old failing paint system underneath on which you are putting new paint on top of. This can be a great option for those with older homes.” Adam says that over the upcoming cooler months the business’s focus will be on completing interior projects. “If your home or commercial building needs some work give us a call on 0276718417 or email us at info@ brumwellpainting.co.nz and I can come and give you an obligation free quote.”

Young basketball prodigy’s busy season ahead JACK MALCOLM Maia Jones says it was a relief to be named in the New Zealand Basketball U17 Women’s side after almost two years of trials and tribulations. After Covid-19 saw their chances of playing last year dashed, the postponed FIBA U16 Asia Cup in Jordan was extended to include U17 players. If Maia’s team finishes in the top four of that competition, they will qualify for the U17 World Cup to be played in Hungary later this year. She says she was reasonably confident with her chances of selection after standing out as a leader in the team, now being one of the four players in the team’s leadership group. “We’ve been having trials for almost two years. There were 30 girls going to the same trials and doing the same things.” With ambitions of moving

Photo: Evan Barnes. to America to study and play after high school, she says the New Zealand team has already been an exciting step on that journey. “Being the only one from Nelson, going in I was nervous at the start, but it’s a way for me to put myself out there. “I’ll be playing international teams, which is good for me

to learn how other countries play because I want to play overseas after school.” With the potential of two trips overseas looming, Maia says she has been lucky to secure some sponsorship and have support from her parents. As the daughter of Giants legend and recent New Zealand Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Phill Jones,

Maia has some well trodden footsteps to follow. It will be a busy year for the young superstar, who has also been named in the Mainland Pouākai to play in the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa women’s league. Home games for the Pouākai will be played in Christchurch, but semifinals and finals will be played at the Trafalgar Centre.

REBELS vs HIGHLANDERS

Leo Hayes may only be 10-yearsold but he is already turning heads in the fighting world after coming away with a win in his first competitive boxing fight. Leo Hayes was one of the first children to enroll at Dixon’s Boxing and, after three years of training, was finally able to step into the ring for his first competitive fight, walking away with a win. The 10-year-old is visibly passionate about the sport, training every week to improve his skill. Trainer Randall Dixon says he’s an exceptional fighter and could go on to box for New Zealand if it’s the path he chooses. Randall says Leo holds both skill and discipline; something that some fighters lack. “I would’ve put him out into a fight sooner, but you can’t until they’re 10-years-old, he’s been hounding me since he started,” Randall says. “He’s been ready for a year or so now.” Randall says Leo is very disciplined. “He’s tough and he’s very determined, but not only that, he’s

skilled.” Leo says stepping into the ring in front of hundreds of people was a little nerve racking but he’s keen to do it again as soon as possible. “There were so many people watching, and I didn’t know this kid or his skills.” He says he was pretty tired after fighting three 90 second rounds against his Rangiora competitor, so much so that he didn’t realise he had won even after his hand was held in the air, signalling triumph. “They held my hand up and it just fell back down, I didn’t even know I’d won.” Leo’s mum Keri says she was a ball of nerves watching him walk into the ring for the first time. “When he first went up, I almost cried,” she says. However, she is proud that Leo’s hard-work and determination paid off. Leo, also a rugby player for Stoke, is eager to see where his fighting career takes him. “He’s exceptional,” Randall says, “He will fight for New Zealand guaranteed, if that’s where he wants to go.”
