Football bid a success Andrew Board A Nelson bid to play in a national football competition has been granted by the sport’s governing body. On Friday New Zealand Football board members voted on whether to include the Nelson bid in the national youth competition after a report into the viability of the bid was considered. The vote was unanimous. The decision means a Nelson team will enter the youth league of the ASB Premiership this season before a full senior team will likely be included for the 2013/14 competition. The ASB Premiership is the country’s top football league and is played from November to March each year, with the youth league kicking off in January. The as-yet-unnamed team will be Nelson’s third major national sports team after the Tasman Ma-
kos and Nelson Giants. Nelson mayor and head of the team that led the bid, Aldo Miccio, says it is a massive achievement for the city and the sport. “I’m absolutely over the moon. This is great news for young footballers and great news for the city as a whole in terms of attracting talent and bringing the best to our city.” The youth league team is likely to play its home games at Saxton Field, Trafalgar Park and possibly Tahunanui. Aldo says key sponsors, coaches and players will be told of the news this week and some announcements will be made in the coming weeks on what the makeup of the side is likely to be. The league is an under 20 competition, with three over-aged players allowed. Earlier this year New Zealand

A wave of galas for spring With spring in the air and the sun turned on, Nelson celebrated with a weekend filled with fun. Four different fairs or galas were held over the weekend. The Hope School Gala, the Cherry
Blossom Festival at Miyazu Gardens, the Spring Fling at Founders and the Nelson Christian Academy’s first ever school gala on Saturday. The school says it received whole hearted support from students
and parents, as well as members of the community. With face painting and live music filling the school grounds the gala made an amazing debut,

A spring of events FROM PAGE 1 says princpal Chris George. There was laughter and cheering at the sponging event as well, with children lining up to hurl a water filled sponge at the faces of good spirited teacher Elise Taylor and Chris. Each class made a special contribution to the event, with proceeds going towards sport and
facilities equipment. Sunday was a fun filled day with the Founders Spring Fling attracting close to a thousand people. The heritage park was in fine form with all the attractions open for business and the event served a reminder to the public that Founders Park is now open for summer. Right next door at Miyazu Gardens the community celebrated the Cherry Blossom Festival.
Football reviewed the ASB Premiership and have decided to maintain the existing format and number of teams meaning that the league will again be contested over two full rounds with two-legged semi-finals and a one-off grand final on March 17. As part of this review they considered a bid from the Nelson consortium, seeking a place for both senior and youth teams. It has been confirmed today that a place for a youth team for 2013 has been granted. New Zealand Football Chief Executive Grant McKavanagh was quick to distinguish the expansion related
to the ASB Youth League alone, and that the ASB Premiership would remain as is. “We need to ensure any expansion is done in a controlled manner and does not jeopardise the stability the ASB Premiership has enjoyed to date. “That being said there is a possibility of expansion, and entry into the ASB Youth League is a good gauge on how teams handle national competition on and off the pitch.” Football is highly popular in Nelson with approximately 2700 registered players. Through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s Nelson had a very successful national league club, Nelson United.

news BRIEF Tourism boost through Hobbit in rEADY TO WOW: The designs created by 12 Nelsonians are in the running for awards this week as the Brancott Estate World of Wearable Art Awards Show gets ready to wow once again. The annual awards, which started in Nelson, will have its first show on September 27 and will run until October 7. This year, in a breathtaking two-hour spectacular of art, theatre, dance, and music, 164 incredible designs will be brought to life on stage with judging on its opening night.
Nelson Tasman Tourism has announced it plans to use the The Hobbit films as a unique marketing opportunity to attract visitors to the area. The region, which is already home to three film locations from the Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as the “One Ring” maker Jens Hansen Jewellers, is expected to attract high numbers of Middle Earth fans in the coming years.
There was no missing the cast and crew of The Hobbit in town during filming in November and December 2011, however actual film locations will not be made public until the screening of each of the three films. NTT has announced it will lead its marketing campaign with the tagline “Nelson Tasman: Have A Hobbit’s Holiday” which has been approved by Warner

Nelson hairdresser Sara Rufffell has already worked out her week-long menu and it doesn’t make pleasant reading. Sara is joining people all over New Zealand and the world and attempting to live on $2.25 a day for five days, an act of empathy with people living in extreme poverty. She says she isn’t looking forward to walking past the cookie jar at her work each day and looking at her workmates lunch when she will be eating just rice, carrots and noodles. The challenge started yesterday and runs until Friday. Sara says she has bought 1kg of rice, 1.5 kg of carrots, a tin of spaghetti, a packet of noodles and a tin of chopped to-
matoes, with $1.40 left over. “The hard thing will not be adding bits here and there, like salt and pepper. But the hardest times I think will be if I’m not busy during the day or if I’m at home when you tend to snack and just the boredom of the food.” Since 1981, the percentage of people living in extreme poverty has dropped from half of the world’s population to just under a quarter today. Sara says she has raised $250 so far with a goal of $350 by the end of the week. “It’s a small inconvenience for me but it will really help other people and I think that’s important.” To donate to Sara’s challenge, visit livetheline.com/nz and search for Sara Ruffell.

The Nelson College year 12 and 13 members of New Vinyl are Ed Palmer (double bass), Alex Farrell-Davey (guitar and vocals) and Allister Meffan (accordion and trumpet). Nelson Grey Power will elect a new executive this week with a special general meeting to be held on Thursday. Last week Neville Male, spokesman for the 33 members who requisitioned the meeting, placed an advert in the Nelson Weekly which caused some confusion he says. “Since the recent public notification about the forthcoming special general meeting for Nelson Grey Power members to elect new office holders and an executive committee I have received a number of enquires asking why this SGM is being managed on behalf of the 33 financial members of Nelson Grey Power, who requisitioned the SGM, and not by the official secretary of the association.” He says it was not a preferred way to handle the meeting but is allowed in the association’s constitution and that the most important thing now is for members to come along and elect a new executive after former president Gordon Currie and five other committee members resigned several months ago. Neville Male is among those standing for the role of president. The special general meeting is being held at Warnes Bowls Stadium in Stoke from 1pm. “With a new executive appointed and a subsequent re-energising of Nelson Grey Power as an organisation there is much to be done to address the concerns of older persons in our community,” says Neville.

fun and she doesn’t regret a moment. There have been plenty of highlights, from the priceless sayings of children to the centre’s 21st birthday celebrations when old pupils came to say hi. There were also the shocking moments, like when a two-trailer truck packed just down the road rolled into the centre after its driver forgot to put on the hand brake. Fortunately it was 7.30 in the morning so only a few children were at the centre and none in the corner of the building that ended up with a truck sticking out of it. “The children that were there were saying ‘big truck, big truck’ and the staff said it was like an earthquake,” says Kay. Kay started at Campus Corner after around a decade off work to raise her children. Before that she was a primary school teacher in Mapua after moving from Westport with her husband, who worked for the Minstry of Transport. Kay says her time at Campus Corner has been more like spending time with family, than work. “They treat you like family, you don’t feel like a teacher. My grandson is in Japan and so it’s like having my grandchildren here and just like grandchildren, they go home. It does feel a bit like that.” Kay says she is looking forward to lawn bowls, gardening, reading and working on her genealogy after this week, but she will miss the children. “I will probably get a tear in my eye. It will be the end of an era for me, but I’ve told them I’m available for relieving for another year.” Her colleagues are having a drink with her from 5.30pm this Friday upstairs at Café Affair. Anyone who would like to pop up is invited.

Nelson Lakes first to lose analogue TV Phillip Rollo Analogue television will be switched off for good in St Arnaud and Murchison this Saturday but a local electronic technician says it’s unlikely to affect anyone. Don Clementson says most television owners have already switched over to the digital network as the technology has been available in those areas for the past 12 years and was the only way to obtain “good reception”. St Arnaud could only pick up two channels on the analogue network and Murchison could only get three, which meant most television users were inclined to get Sky TV or Freeview, says Don. “Because Freeview has been around for a while and
Sky has been there calls down that way because they’ve got for quite some time most people have digital. The half million dollars given by Nelson City Council each year in community grants needs to be reviewed. Many ratepayers on low incomes are struggling to pay their rates, while grants are frequently given to organisations that benefit people on higher incomes. It is clear that most of the current council is out of touch with those people who are struggling financially. The vested interests of influential people in the community are being catered to, rather than considering the ability of ratepayers to support spiralling debt and rate increases. If Nelson ratepayers elect a different council next year, then much of the non-core spending by council needs to be reviewed.

The Tamerlanes in Nelson in the 1950s. Right are the remaining Tamerlanes from left Margaret Hawthorn, Val Sadd, Eleanor Duncan and Ruth Parker. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.
Marching back the years Sinead Ogilvie Time has marched on but if you recognise these ladies, you may be one of the missing Tamerlanes. Eleanor Duncan is heading up a team of old marching girls, who formed the Tamerlanes in the 1950s. While they were just school girls then, a chance encounter has brought the marching team back together over 50 years later, and all they need now is to find the remaining members. Eleanor Duncan and Ruth Parker were best friends during the Tamerlane years but lost contact, until a trip to the cattery brought them back together. “It was a marching day, and I took the cat to the cattery. I happened to say I’m off to marching, and the woman who owns it said ‘my cousin Ruth marches’, and that’s when I realised it was her.” Marching together in a leisure marching team, Eleanor and Ruth discovered there were a few members of the old Tamerlanes team involved and the idea of
a reunion stemmed from there. “We suddenly realised there were four Tamerlanes in this team, from the 50s, so we said hey, 'let’s do something about a Tamerlane reunion'.” The reunion is scheduled to be held in Nelson during March next year, and the girls are on the lookout for other ex members of the Tamerlanes. Ruth says that discovering each member has been a lot of fun and the team has lived interesting lives since they lost touch. “Everyone’s got kids, had a couple of marriages and lived all over New Zealand," she says. Each Tamerlane has been enthusiastic to reunite and Ruth says the response has been fantastic. “The contacts we have made have all been so keen, they’ve all said 'hey yes let’s do it, before we all cark it' That’s been the main response.” Eleanor says getting the old marching team back together is great, and with many members turning up locally, the
process hasn’t been as difficult as expected. “You know all of us marched together when we were 15 and 16, and now here we are in our 70s, it’s lovely to catch up with everyone again.” The Tamerlanes were a well known marching group, and were Nelson champions every year in their hay day. Ruth says they would always win the uniform category. “Our leader always used to say, 'we don’t march very well but we look lovely'.” The reunion is all about catching up with old friends, and they intend to have a “march past” together. While 24 of the members have been contacted, there is still an elusive few that they are yet to track down. The members are; Janis Page, Valda Pawson, Colleen Harvey, Beverley Harvey, Marion Cooper, and Sandra Roberts. If you are part of the missing list, get in contact with Eleanor on (03) 528 7480 or email duncan.eleanor@gmail.com

IHC is bringing one of the world’s greatest ever rugby players to the region for its fundraising evening at the Nelson Suburban Club next month. Sir Colin Meads will headline the night that also includes a three course buffet dinner and plenty of spot prizes as the Nelson IHC Association looks to secure key funding for future projects. Nelson IHC Association chair Dell Williams says Sir Colin is “an icon”, not only because he is widely recognised as the greatest All Black of all time but for his work with the national IHC body. “He was branch president where he lives for many years and he’s a life member for the national society,” she says. “If you haven’t heard of Colin Meads then you’ve been asleep haven’t you? He’s quite well known.” Tickets for the event can be purchased at the Nelson Suburban Club for $60 per person. The evening will be held on Sunday October 7. This is the first major IHC fundraiser that has been held in Nelson for the past four years. “We need to make the public aware that IHC still exists because there is no longer an envelope appeal with door knocking. The recognition factor has probably slipped but we could use the money.” The funds will go towards a lot of “behind the scenes work” that includes paying for carers, maintaining an IHC home in Stoke which includes a new $20,000 playground, paying for usage of the Ngawhatu Swimming Pool, supporting a day base in Richmond and many more services.

Exhibition attracts plenty of interest

Colin Meads comes to town
TUESDAY 25 September 2012
It’s been a busy week for the Nelson Provincial Museum as its latest exhibition attracts plenty of attention. The exhibition, Te Ahi Ka Roa, Te Ahi Katoro, Taranaki War 1860-2012: Our Legacy Our Challenge, was developed by Puke Ariki Museum in New Plymouth to commemorate 150 years since the Taranaki wars. The Nelson Provincial Museum was keen to bring the exhibition to town as Taranaki and Nelson share links from that timeframe that a lot of Nelsonians might be unaware of. The land confiscations and resulting wars in Taranaki shaped the future of many European and Maori New Zealanders, and not just those in the Taranaki region.

Nelson based historian Dr. John Mitchell is pleased the exhibition is here after he and his wife Hilary encouraged the Museum trust to bring it to Nelson. John’s tribal background is both Te Atiawa and Ngati Tama and he and Hilary have researched and had work published on the overlap between Taranaki and Nelson, and John says it’s important for Nelson to understand the link. The exhibition uses interactive displays and artifacts to portray the shocking and fascinating tactics used during the wars, and what impact they had on those involved. The exhibition is now open and will run until February 20 and is free for all Nelson and Tasman residents.

Customers get behind tree fund
Tahunanui beach had some new sand dunes added to it last week, thanks to Honda drivers. The Honda TreeFund tree planting day is held annually at the back beach as a part of the council’s sand dune recovery programme. To date Bowater Honda has provided over $70,000 worth of funding for over 13,500 trees which have been planted on Tahunanui Beach, in Appleby, the Moutere and on Haulashore Island. Last Wednesday the team from Bowater Honda, along with some dedicated local customers, turned up at the “raised carpark” on the Back Beach Rd to literally plant a truck load of trees
into the sand dunes to aid in the sand dune recovery. The planting day is a result of Honda’s unique TreeFund initiative which sees 13 native trees planted for every new car sold. Honda has been funding tree plantings nationally since 2004, and to date over half a million trees have been planted around the country. Ten native trees are funded for every new car that Honda New Zealand sells, with another three funded by the dealerships (Bowater Honda) as sellers of that car. So for every new car sold, 13 trees are planted.

Retailer has Weetabix stuck at customs
A Richmond retailer stuck in a breakfast battle with Sanitarium has spoken out about the company’s latest efforts to stop him from selling an English alternative to Marmite and Weet-Bix. As first reported by the Nelson Weekly in April, representatives from Sanitarium threatened Bob Wren, owner of English Bob’s Emporium in Sundial Square, with legal action if he did not take Weetabix off the shelf because it infringed a trademark owned by the company. Sanitarium demanded the names and addresses of everyone he had sold Weetabix to, hoping they could get access to the remaining cereal boxes. Media publications throughout New Zealand reported on the situation, which resulted in Sanitarium backing down on its legal threats. Bob even tried to buy the rights to the name Weetabix from the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand. They declined, citing it was too similar to the trademark Weet-Bix and that it would confuse customers. But Sanitarium has since gone straight to New Zealand Customs
to stop infringed product entering the country all together. An English warehouse owner based in Christchurch told Campbell Live last month that he had 2000 jars of English Marmite held up at customs. It is believed some of those are Bob’s. Bob made an official statement to the Nelson Weekly on Monday. “I myself and other English shop owners only sell these products to people who want them because they love them and have eaten them all of their lives,” says Bob. “We don’t sell them to directly oppose Sanitariums products as they don’t like those products. Weetabix is not Weet-Bix and contrary to them saying so, they are afraid of competition, not for it at all. “I have kept my head down and said nothing since they left me alone but I am getting sick and tired of their behind the scenes tactics. Surely we should have the freedom of choice to eat what we want to eat and not be told by a self centred religious group that we have to eat their products or nothing. Why should we be bound while the rest of the world is freely eating these products?”

Pipe band prepares for Ceilidh Haggis and a bagpipe rock fusion is on the menu for the Celtic Pipe Band’s annual Ceilidh. It’s promising to be a night of fantastic music and entertainment and the Scottish themed event is put on for the whole community. Celtic is Nelson’s youngest pipe band, and they are looking forward to putting on the event with music, dancing and a full address to the haggis. Pipe major Bryce Gilchrist says the Ceilidh is an exciting event for the members to put on, and the band organises everything from the music, to the raffles and food for the night. “There’s something really home grown about the Ceilidh, it’s a fun event for everyone involved, it’s just a really good night.” The members of the band range in ages, and the night will feature traditional pipeband music and contemporary pieces. A few members will perform a piece using rock and pipe band instruments, and Bryce
says the use of electric guitars and a drum kit was inspired by younger members of the band wanting to do something a bit different. “They composed the guitar and drum score to fit a well known bagpipe tune, they are really creative young musicians.” The mixture of older and younger members performing means there will be something for everyone at the Ceilidh, and Bryce says that will be the highlight of the night. “The thing that amazes me is watching people young or old get up and dance, having a great time.” After an outstanding turnout last year, the band has moved to a bigger venue for this year’s Ceilidh to accommodate a growing amount of support. The Ceilidh will be held at Stoke Memorial Hall, and the performers will be members of the band, Helen’s highland dancers, and other local musicians.

Nelson College for Girls student Hannah Colling has made a documentary on the Hniang family, who immigrated to Nelson from the Chin state in Myanmar. They are from left; Bual Khan, Tha Tha, Bawi Min, Hlawn Hlawn and Esther. Photo: Andrew Board.
Local family to star in film festival At just 17, Hannah Colling is preparing to have her first ever documentary shown on the big screen where it will be watched by fellow students, family, teachers and the refugee family that was the subject of her film. Hannah, is just one of more than 20 Nelson College for Girls students that will have their films shown at the Suter as part of the school’s annual film festival. Her documentary is based on a family from the Chin state in Myanmar who immigrated to Nelson. She says the film got emotional as she heard the family’s story of escape, including travelling on a van covered in plastic to the Thai border. They had to poke a hole in the plastic to breathe. “They were very willing to share everything. They have adjusted with what they’d been through so the reaction was to laugh about what they’d been through. It did get a bit emotional though. I didn’t expect the story to be as harsh as it was,” she says.
With a large Chin population in Nelson, Hannah is hoping the story will resonate with other families in the region. “All of the families from the Chin state have had to travel a similar journey in order to get to the boarder of Thailand and I think many would have a similar story.” The doco took around 10 hours to film, says Hannah, with many more hours spent editing after school and on weekends. She says she is nervous about the festival and she hopes her film goes down well. “I want it to turn out really well for them. It’s not just my project, it’s for them as well,” she says. “I’ll be nervous because I’ve got my idea of how I want it to look and I’m happy with it but it will be interesting to see what other people think of it as well. But it’s very rewarding as well, having it on the big screen. I think everyone tries a bit harder because people will actually see it.” The NCG film festival is at the Suter on September 26 from 7pm.

The lucky recipients of the 18th Habitat for Humanity home built in Nelson is the Cinzah family and they say they can’t wait to move in. The family is originally from Myanmar and has been living in Nelson for six years, in and around the Victory area and they have watched in awe as their new home has risen from the ground and is now fully completed. “We are very excited, of course. How to apply for a Habitat house
If your family, or a family you know, is in need of decent, affordable housing, contact the Nelson Habitat affiliate. Visit the website www. habitat.org.nz or phone 03 546 8132. The Habitat affiliate will explain the application process and provide information on the availability, size and cost of Habitat homes in your area. Habitat affiliates will select “partner families” to become Habitat homeowners. Partner families are always selected based on their level of need, their willingness to become partners in the programme and their ability to repay their rent. Habitat for Humanity follow a non-discriminatory policy of family selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing partner families. Applicants must either be New Zealand citizens or have permanent residency and have live in Nelson for at least three years.

Habitat for Humanity is an International organisation that started in the United States in 1976 and was introduced to New Zealand by Ian Hay of Keith Hay Homes in 1993. Two years later former Keith Hay Homes salesman Julian Shields and Di Cressey set up the Nelson affiliate. Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to building simple but decent houses for families in need. Its mission statement reflects that objective: “Habitat for Hu-

manity is a Christian organisation that works in partnership with people of goodwill and families in need to eliminate sub-standard housing by building and selling simple decent homes on an affordable basis.” Habitat seeks to give people a hand up, rather than a hand out. Families chosen for Habitat homes are expected to provide $500 deposit plus 500 hours of their own time, whether it is helping in the actual building or by way of raising funds.

do Tui, and both have a moss killer in the mix so the choice is yours. • Your daphne’s will have almost finished flowering now and will be in need of a tonic. Burnets make a product called Sequestron which helps prevent leaf yellowing on acid loving plants and can be used to great effect on citrus, pieris, hydrangeas, azaleas, rhododendrons etc. • Mix up as per the instructions and use as a foliar spray or drench with a watering can. Wait until the sun is off the foliage before spraying. • Now is the time to prune and reshape your sasanqua samellias. They do not need a hard prune generally but a reshape is always good. A spray with Neem or Conqueror oil at this time will also help keep bugs at bay especially scale and mealy bug. • Spring is the best time to mulch. It helps reduce evaporation as the days warm up (yes- they are going to !) , and encourages healthy and more vigorous growth. • Check the new leaves on the roses for aphid. A quick water blast will deal to the early ones but you will need to spray soon. Wait until October to start feeding these but a good handful of sheep pellets around the base will start things off. • Harden off your tomato seedlings that were sown in August. By introducing them to a wee bit of sun each day they will cope better with transplant shock. A weak solution of liquid feed at planting time will also help – worm juice is good for this – see John at Bay nurseries – he makes a great brew!! Add a little Seasol to the mix and the plants should thrive. Stay busy and happy in the spring garden – lots to do and lots more to come…….

Mixed bag for Nelson Bays age group teams Last minute heartbreak has seen the Nelson Bays Under-16 representative rugby team lose to its nearest rivals 22-24 at Jubilee Park on Saturday, despite a cameo performance from reserve front rower Kendall Hodson. Kendall, who usually plays in the backline for Nayland College, came off the bench to score two quick tries and edge past Marlborough 22-10 on the scoreboard with just seven minutes to play. Nelson College’s standout Jacob Whittaker also scored a try for the home side after a well-worked long range effort. Jacob was sent to the sin bin with only five minutes left on the clock. He was deemed to have foot tripped a Marlborough player who was hot on attack. But Nelson’s strong second half display was all in vain as a relentless young Red Devils side kicked into another gear to score two tries in quick succession right on full-time. The conversion was successful, giving Marlborough a two point win. Canterbury Metro remain top of the pool with Nelson sitting on six points and Marlborough now on four. The next match is against Canterbury Metro in Dunedin this week and is a must win for the Gryphons.

Federal dominates club hockey
Federal player Anna Tucker tangles with Waimea College's Brittani Harrington during Saturday's division one women's final. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Federal had two reasons to celebrate on Saturday as one of New Zealand's oldest hockey clubs further cemented its status as Nelson's premier club. Federal left it late to secure a 3-2 victory over NBS Stoke in the Hockey Nelson division one men' final, following prior success by the women's side who dispatched Waimea College 4-0 in the game before. Craig Brett, who scored two goals for the Federal side in the men's division one final and also coaches both the men's and women's teams, says it was a "pretty big thing" to have both teams in the final, let alone coming home with the silverware. "The women's game was probably more expected but the men's game could have gone either way. We were lucky to come back and take it out." Federal has now won the women's division one final nine times in the past ten years. It also won the Top of the South title just two weeks ago. But this is the first time in around four years that both genders had taken Nelson's top prize in the same season. "At the end of the day there is a great pathway at the Federal club. It's one of the oldest in the country, it's well over 100 years old. We had eight teams out of 14 in the finals [over various grades] this year, so it's a pretty good result." Craig says the women's side is playing its best hockey in a number of years.

Nelson runner wins coastal classic Ex-Nelson College student
Nelson trailrunner, Graeme Taylor keeps getting better and better. In Saturday’s 19th Abel Tasman Coastal Classic he started fast and finished the same way, 2 hours 27 minutes and 5 seconds later “scorching” the 36km course from Awaroa
Lodge back to Marahau. Conditions couldn’t have been any better. A dead flat sea showcased why it’s New Zealand’s premier paddling territory as 297 competitors boated up to the start. At Tonga Beach, Taylor had “the
pretenders” tucked away safely behind. Only the well performed Vajin Armstrong looked a threat as he valiantly chased. But the catching up didn’t eventuate as Taylor comfortably crossed the finish line just under 4 minutes ahead.
Big rides by mini motos The region’s first introduction to a mini motocross championship is being hailed as a success by its organisers. The Nelson Motorcycle Centre Mini Moto X Champs, run by the Nelson Motorcycle Club, was held in Quail Valley over the weekend and gave some riders a perfect warm up before the national championship in Upper Hutt next month. Riders from Blenheim, Takaka, the West Coast and Christchurch contested the championship against dozens of Nelson’s best four to 11 year olds. One of the visiting riders is the current 50cc national champion. Chase McManaway of Wakefield beat Keira Crichton in the intro class; Toby Walker of Stoke was first in the trail bike class, beating
Braydon Hardy and Janey-Rose ReylandBatchlor; Mitchell Smith of Greymouth won the 50cc unclutched class, edging Brightwater’s Nico Palmer-Donaldson and Krugar Griffith of Takaka; Christchurch’s Cobie Bourke was too good for local duo Luca Palmer-Donaldson and Ezra McFarland in the 65cc 7 year old to 8 year old class; while Hope’s Bailey Aldridge reigned supreme in the 65cc 9 to 11 year olds class. A handful of Nelson riders will make the trip to the New Zealand Mini National Championship on October 5 and 7. Event organiser Delwyn Leitch says a great weekend was had by everyone who attended and the event would not have been possible without the support of many local businesses.

Stoke Nayland Cricket Cricket season is upon us and the region’s most successful team over the past decade is hoping for a bumper year, with new players, new initiatives and a new balcony. Stoke-Nayland Cricket Club has been a force in senior
club cricket over the past few seasons, winning numerous trophies, watching a bulk of its top players represent Nelson and developing a programme of bringing young players to its top team. This year the club has re-set it goals and is hoping to attract several new players for its first and second grade teams. Club captain Ryan Edwards says the club is keen to see any new players come along and see what they are all about. “We’ve got a good family club, with great sponsors and our match days supporters of Stoke Nayland are pretty family focused with the barbeques after the games and stuff like and Nelson Cricket that. Ideally, we’re after guys who’ve

played cricket in the past or in other parts of the country, but honestly we’re keen to hear from anyone.” The club is hosting an open day this Sunday, September 30 with a barbeque from 12noon and an official opening of its new balcony on its clubrooms at 1pm. Club manager Brendan Hodgson says this year is a bit of a fresh start for the club with a new social focus off the pitch, but still a steely determination to win on it. “We understand that playing cricket on a Saturday is a big commitment so we try to make it as family-orientated as possible. “We’ve really tried to push greater club involvement with our past players and keeping them involved to help our younger guys out as well. We have guys that have had massive careers for the club and we don’t want them to just bugger off,” he says. Last season the club won the Car Company one day cham-

Ryan says while the pinnacle of senior cricket is winning the two-day competition, he would personally love to win the Twenty/20 competition this year. “For me personally, the big one is the Twenty/20 competition. Nelson's claim to becoming the cycling capital of New Zealand will gain a further boost when the Konica Minolta Nelson Cycle Festival rides into town. The third edition of the Nelson Cycle Festival will be held throughout the entire region from October 6 to 28 and will again encompass a variety of cycling events catering for all ages and abilities. The Konica Minolta Nelson Cycle Festival emerged from an idea initiated by event founder Mike Watson to promote both cycling and Nelson-Tasman in 2008. The event has experienced two successful years and has had well over 1500 cyclists participating in over 20 events in all riding disciplines right across the two districts. This year's event has been boosted by the Nelson-Tasman Cycle Trails Trusts push at making the region the heart of cycling in New Zealand. Event spokesperson Chris Butler describes the event as "cycling for all". "It is to promote Nelson-Tasman as a fantastic region for cycling and what we want to do is not only showcase the elite riders and all types of cycling genres but also promote the fact it is for everyone and for families," he says. "There are plenty of fun family rides, it's active and it's healthy as well. Get into the garage, brush the cobwebs off the bike and get it out. Even if it's just riding to see some of the events, but we are encouraging everyone to participate." The Nelson Cycle Festival will give cyclists a chance to ride the first stages of the Great Taste Cycle Trail, which will
Some of the organisers and those taking part in the Konica Minolta Nelson Cycle Festival next month. Photo: Phillip Rollo. loop through the entire Tasman region when completed. Chris sees the trail as an important piece to the festival. "The Nelson-Tasman region cycling is one of the fastest growing activities and the environment we have is perfect for cycling. With all of the infrastructure being put in place it is a real plus for people from outside the region to encompass." The first events on the Nelson Cycle Festival calendar are the Coppermine Recreational Heli
Bike Mountain Bike Ride and round six of the Benchmark Homes Elite Cycle Series in the Moutere. Other key events include the Nelson City Cathedral Criterium, the Crombie Lockwood Wheelie Fun Day at Saxton Field, the Urban Cross Country Event at Nelson College, multiple Tasman Wheelers events and the premiere of cycle film Premium Rush.
