Spending in Nelson grew more than anywhere in the country last month and retailers say they hope the good times roll into winter. Figures released by Paymark at the start of the month showed Nelson spending through eftpos machines on the Paymark network grew 8.4 per cent in May, higher than anywhere else in New Zealand. Spending for the same month in 2010 sat at $65.4 million. It rose last year to $67.4 million and jumped to $73.1 million this year. Nationally, the annual growth was 5.8 per cent for the month with much of that spending growth in the retail building sector. Plumbing retailers had a growth of 17.7 per cent, wholesale building stores 16.4 per cent and floor covering suppliers 13.8 per cent. Nelson City Council also re-

corded a big increase in the number of building consents issued, up to 116 from just 74 in May last year. Paul Whiston from Paymark says the results are better than they would normally expect. “In particular, spending is running better than usual amongst merchants that have some association with the building cycle and in terms of regions, Nelson stood out.” Nelson City Council says while its building consent figures show a remarkable increase from the same time last year, there was a spike in applications before March last year when the Licensed Building Practitioner scheme started. But consents are still up for the year to date and 15 new houses were built in May 2012 against 11 for the same month last

A five hour endurance challenge in Nelson marked the end of the eight week CACTUS programme for two dozen local teens. Three teams battled it out through exercises including relay races on the cathedral steps and scaling the fire station tower with a hose charged with more than 500 litres of water. Hannah VanderGieffen and Axel Shadbolt won the NZ Police award for leadership, with Jessica Young and Alexandra Cohen awarded the Nelson Aviation College’s Best Attitude and Most Improved respectively. The students say they gained fitness, confidence and motivation and learned to work as part of a team over the programme. “We have a real mixture of kids in terms of abilities and attitudes; it’s great to see how far they’ve come,” says Gavin Miller of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The Vic to get an earthquake upgrade

General manager of The Vic Brewbar Phil Williams outside the old building. Photo: Andrew Board.

Another iconic Nelson building has been deemed an earthquake risk and will undergo an upgrade next month. The Vic Brewbar will be closed for around two weeks in late July and will be disrupted over a two month period in total because of the renovations, although it will be able to open at nights during that time. General manager of The Vic Brewbar, Phil Williams, says there is never an ideal time to put up with the disruption but he is happy with the efforts the landlords have made to accommodate them. The Vic is the latest in several buildings around Nelson that have been closed awaiting a decision on whether they will be strengthened. Phil says The Vic will use the opportunity to make some cosmetic upgrades in the bar at the same time. “We’ll upgrade a few things and make it a bit nicer but generally the bar will be the same layout as it is now.” Work on the building is due to start on July 1 and finish August 23.

Police issue advice after spike in theft is confident the figure will reduce even further. “Where possible, park your car up a driveway as it is more likely to be broken into if it is on the street. As most offences occur at night, security lighting and cut back vegetation on your property makes the risk of being caught outweigh any potential reward that someone may have in mind. Car alarms are also a good consideration, making your vehicle less attractive to a thief. And of course reporting suspicious behaviour to the police at the time you see it.” Steven says if your vehicle has been broken into, no matter how insignificant you think it is, then don’t touch it and report it. This allows the police to examine it forensically as well as gain a pattern of offending increasing the chance of catching the offender.

GOOD TIMES: Owners of the Nelson Weekly celebrate its rise in circulation, along with its sister paper Waimea Weekly. They are from left; Sarah and Andrew Board, Steve Page and Jenny Bates. Photo: Rosie Thomsen.

Circulation of Weeklys smashes past 30,000 Your locally owned community newspaper has bucked the trend of newspapers world-wide as its circulation continues to rise, this month smashing past 30,000 copies. That means the Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly, the only locally owned newspapers in Nelson, go into more than 30,000 homes, with hundreds of extras dropped off at points in Stoke, Richmond and the CBD and to businesses. Chief executive and publisher of the newspapers Steve Page says the increase is due to reader demand and is a great sign that Nelsonians are getting behind a newspaper owned and operated by Nelsonians. “Nelson folk are very good at supporting Nelson businesses if the product or service is up to scratch. We have been running for almost seven years now and we’ve proven that we deliver results for advertisers and carry great, interesting stories. That means demand for the papers keeps growing and now has a circulation which has busted through the 30,000 mark, a great milestone for the newspapers.”

Theft from cars in central Nelson has spiked recently, prompting police to issue a caution. Nelson Bays area commander Inspector Steven Greally says that recently a number of motor vehicles have been broken into around the Nile St, Brook St and the Central City area. “Atawhai also has received the unwanted attention of thieves. Most of these vehicles were locked but despite this, valuable items and money had been left in plain view, making them a suitable target. If it can’t be seen, then it is less likely to be stolen. There are also a large number of cars left unlocked which makes them appealing to a potential offender.” He says recorded theft from vehicles is actually down substantially in Nelson and by locking cars and ensuring valuable items are removed, or at least out of sight, he

The Weeklys are delivered to every home from Rai Valley to Murchison and across to the Moutere Valley, giving fantastic coverage to the region’s readers and advertisers. The boost in circulation is another milestone for the Weekly, after winning the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Award for best emerging business last November. Steve says any businesses that haven’t used the Weeklys for advertising should give it a go. “We are now one of the largest privately owned newspaper groups in the country and provide a massive platform for potential advertisers to get their message across. Our current advertisers are getting the benefits of advertising in a newspaper that goes to so many homes and we are keen to help other businesses with their marketing.” Steve says another major reason for the papers’ success is interesting stories that people want to read and says he encourages anyone with any story ideas to get in touch. From My Desk We have passed the shortest day, and it is only a few more days until the second term school holidays, another month to cross off on the calendar. It’s been a busy ½ year at college for my own teenagers and their friends, and I know they are all looking forward to a relaxing school holiday. I am sure some of you are planning to go away or even head to the mountains for a play in the snow or to hit the slopes. Be safe and enjoy. Fashion Island is having the most amazing ‘winter wonderland.’ First week of the holidays we are bringing snow to Nelson… an ice/snow mountain with snow makers, so come and bring the children and have a play. Grab a hot chocolate and enjoy the winter white atmosphere. Make sure while you are here to go into the draw to win double ski passes to Rainbow ski field, or Cardrona ski field near Queenstown. Wrap up warm with some furs or decadently warm jerseys from The Rock Box. This gorgeous store has had more amazing winter clothes arrive, jackets, long tees, jeans and dresses. For all girls shopping for their ball dresses, you definitely need to look at the stunning selection of short and long dresses and with The Rock Box’s selection of beautiful jewellery you will be ready to start booking your makeup with The Body Shop for your special night. Have a fabulous week, and I look forward to seeing you at our Fashion Island.

Mini challenge a giant fundraiser Andrew Board Bob Croy likes to do his bit for the Cancer Society. He grows daffodils for its annual appeal and collects money on Daffodil Day. But after completing this year’s Relay for Life he wanted to do something bigger. His idea though was mini. A 1975 Morris Mini Mark 3, to be precise. Bob says he and three friends were sitting around a café table drinking coffee after this year’s Relay for Life, having raised more than $2500 for the charity. But seeing another group raise more than $6000 got their competitive juices going and he began to think about how they could top it for the 2014 event. “I thought ‘how the hell can I beat that?’” The idea of restoring a mini like brand new soon followed and in March Bob shook hands with a reluctant seller and purchased the Mini for him and his mates to restore before raffling it off. The plan was to raise $10,000 but with offers of help coming from all over the region Bob reckons they’ll smash that total. “I think that estimate will be very light,” he grins. The four mates – all from Wakefield – all have a pas-

sion for helping people with cancer. They have all seen its effects up close, so were keen to make sure the Mini raffle was done right and soon after starting their project they had offers of support from panel beaters, car painters and auto electrians. Bowater Motor Group also found out about the project and came on board as a sponsor, supplying every brand new part for free. Bob says the support was overwhelming. “When we started my wife and I were going to pay for it all and when the raffle finished pay ourselves back and hoped there would be $10,000 at the end of it. But with everyone coming on board we don’t have to do that, it’s really good.” The mini has been stripped down to every last part and was recently sandblasted. The engine will be rebored and the car will be painted bright yellow. The only thing that will not be standard will be tyres and mags.

“We hope to have it finished by June next year, then we’ll cart it around and sell raffle tickets.” Among those volunteering their time to work on the car are Tony Johnson from Sun City Panel and Paint, Nick Harrison, John Ross and the three other originals, John Bruce, Dal Stewart and Colin Ryder. They plan to cart the Mini around on a trailer all over the top of the south. Bob says with the team now in place he contacted Nelson Weekly to let the public know what’s going on. “A lot of people don’t know about it. The people we’ve told have been right in behind us but the general public doesn’t really know so we want to get it out there.” By this time next year, the bright yellow Mini will definitely be out there and Bob says he hopes it will make its mark not just for how it looks, but for how much money it raises.

Caltex Bishopdale is getting an upgrade with two new fibre glass gas tanks being installed to replace the four older steel ones. Local owner operator Kyle Lightfoot says the project to replace the tanks at the Waimea Rd petrol station will take between six and eight weeks and started on June 11. Kyle says that the new tanks being installed are “rather large” and provide the same capacity as before. “The main reason for the up-

Museum educator retires after 17 years Andrew Board

Nelson Provincial Museum educator Imogen McCarthy retired last week after 17 years in the job. Photo: Andrew Board.

For 17 years Imogen McCarthy has described the exhibits at the Nelson Provincial Museum to thousands of Nelson students but last week she became an exhibit herself. Imogen retired last Thursday from her beloved job, and to show how important she has been to the museum, chief executive Peter Millward gave her an exhibit tag – with an official museum number. “We don’t want to let her go so she will be in our system forever now,” he joked. Imogen was one of two educators at the museum and was farewelled last Thursday by her work colleagues, family, friends and representatives from most of the schools in the region. She says she will miss the job but it is time to “move on”. “I’m 68 years old so it’s time I made different choices and I’ll still do contracts for people but I want to be able to choose what I do and when I do it. I’ve got lots of grandchildren so that will keep me

busy.” Her former workmates said Imogen is “one out of the box” and she will leave a “big hole”. “The gifts she has given the children is quite something. She’s been an absolute leader, the teaching style is unique and different from other parts of the country,” says Peter. Imogen started her working life as a forester but says there wasn’t much work for a female forester “back in those days”. So she became a school teacher, working for 20 years at Tapawera Area School. She says contact with the children and being able to study a wide range of content were two highlights of her job. “I’ve got a mine of useless information so it was quite nice to share it.” She says she was a little embarrassed by all the fuss over her retirement but her colleagues said she deserved the sendoff. “She is a living legend,” says Peter. “As it says on her official exhibition tag; they don’t lie.”

If winning isn’t important, why bother to add up the score.

Maori king to open school The Maori king, Tuheitia Paki, will open the region’s first ever Maori immersion school on July 14. Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia te Matangi, which is situated in Richmond next to Salisbury School and the Richmond Church of Christ, has employed six teachers, including its principal, and has 54 students currently enrolled. The majority of those students have come from central Nelson. It will be the fifth Maori immersion school in the South Island and was fully funded by the Ministry of Education. Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia te Matangi principal Merita Waitoa-Paki says the school “is a dream come true” following an idea that started 20 years ago to build a kura in Nelson. “Even for me, who has come on in the later time,

for Maori education in Nelson, Marlborough and Tasman it is exciting,” she says. “For me personally it is huge challenge but it’s very exciting and motivating.” The first month will involve creating a culture amongst the school. Staff will go through a three day “live in” at the Whakatu Marae before the school opens. The kura is being constructed by Arrow International. Every student and family was interviewed and assessed in Te Reo Maori prior to joining the kura. Merita would like to acknowledge the schools that the students are coming from. “They’ve been so supportive for the students to go. As part of the exit from their schools, a lot of them will be holding various farewells and we’ve been invited for the hand over.”

Children were taught to mix environmental responsibility with fun for the Hyperwaste Art Expo, held on the cathedral steps last Friday. Any waste was fair game for the students, with CDs, old lampshades, plastic bottles and food wrappers finding a second life in the 30-odd artworks. Nine schools and early childhood centres got involved.

The exhibition was the brainchild of Sarah Langi, of the Nelson Environment Centre, who timed the expo with Matariki to tie in with the fun of the event and the message of new beginnings. The Refinery Artspace selected 10 pieces for their display, with the remainder going to the childrens library. They will be gathered once more for Ecofest in August.

The building was designed by Arthouse Architecture, with Architect Jorgen Andersen spearheading the project. Arthouse Architecture has made a name for themselves in the Nelson region, designing striking and modern buildings such as the new Saxton Pavilion. They have won several awards within the industry, including New Zealand Institute of Architecture Awards, as well as awards from Registered Master Builders, ITM and Wild Tomato. Healthcare in Nelson is about to take a leap forward in convenience and accessibility with the opening of the Collingwood Centre set for the end of next month. The new building will house Nelson Radiology, Nelson Orthopaedics, as well as general practitioners, a pharmacy and various other medical and health services. The shared location of these services will allow medical professionals to easily refer patients to other specialists. It will boast an ambulance bay as well as an Accidents and Medical clinic, and has been designed as a supplement to the hospital. The newly constructed building will be three stories tall and more than 3,500 square metres, allowing an abundance of space for the specialists already on board and space for more to join. On the ground floor will largely be the accidents and medical clinic, with an undercover ambulance bay at the rear of the building, as well as a cafe and a standalone pharmacy, with access under a covered glass walkway. The first floor will house Nelson Radiology and Nelson Orthopaedics, with the second floor designed to be adapted to fit a few large sized specialists, or up to ten smaller specialists. Ian Jones knows what it’s like to be stared at. His stunning hot rod has turned more heads than Rachel Hunter in a bikini. So this weekend’s cruise with most of the region's hot rods as well as American vintage cars and American motorbikes should be quite a sight. The Nelson Hot Rod Club is organising a cruise from its base at the Nelson Suburban Club to Kaiteriteri this Sunday, July 1, to commemorate American Independence Day. The club is inviting everyone with any kind of American vehicle to come along and take part, be it in a vintage car, motorbike or late model car. Ian and his wife Sue will be driving in their hot rod that Ian spent three and a half years building. He says it’s a mash of several different cars. “It was scratch built, the only thing original is the chasse rails. The rest has been modified.”

No mariner or sailor ever likes to hear the expression on his radio, and if he does he has a moral and legal obligation to respond to the sender or the relay station, even if it’s to say you are too far away to assist. But what about the guy that initiates the distress call? If you are on the beach and you see someone who is clearly in distress then you have a moral and legal obligation to call the police. You have a further obligation to assist the police as required until advised otherwise. • Some time ago a concerned citizen rightly called the police as they thought someone inside the harbour, standing on the upturned hull of their small yacht, was in danger. It is the second hot rod Ian has built, buying his first one as an 18 year old. He says he likes the “nostalgia” of driving an old-style car. “I like the stylish looking car, the shapes, curves, the contours. Something you can panel beat and make look good. I like driving the old-style cars because they have a lot of character.” Ian imported a roadster body from the United States for his car, which also has an Edelbrock 350 Chevy motor with high performance gear in it, a turbo 350 auto transmission with a 9 inch diff. The brakes and steering are from a Holden HQ. The cruise is meeting at the Nelson Suburban Club, 68 Tahuanui Dr, July 1 at 9.30am and leaving at 11am. It will go via Main Rd, Stoke, Queen St Richmond, then via the Coastal Highway to Kaiteriteri, parking up there for two hours then cruising back via the old Moutere highway back to the Suburban Club around 4pm. wind was very strong and the conditions rough. When the concerned citizen watched the yacht get righted, the sailor climb inside and then sail away he could have rung the police back and cancelled the mayday. Too easy. From medical to musical for charity Local talent took the spotlight as doctors and medical students graced the Nelson School of Music stage. A full house welcomed the inaugural performance of the New Zealand Doctors’ Orchestra, comprised of 65 doctors and medical students from around the country. Local surgeon Adrian Secker received rapturous applause for his piano solo, followed by physiotherapist Tara Martin, who captivated the audience with her soprano solo, both accompanied by the orchestra. Professor Tim Wilkinson of the University of Otago, says they uncovered a “wealth of musical talent and enthusiasm,” when seeking skilled musicians in the medical industry, with the

majority of the orchestra players having reached grade eight or higher for their respective instruments. The NZDO was partly formed to highlight the necessity to maintain a healthy work-life balance in a demanding job, says Wilkinson. Similar ventures have become a tradition in Australia and Europe, with medical professionals showcasing their musical talent to raise money for local charities. The concert was the first by the NZ Doctors’ Orchestra, which is touring New Zealand for charity, with costs for travel and venue hire covered by the players themselves. All proceeds from Nelson’s ticket sales are to be donated to the Nelson Regional Hospice Trust.

Brass Band to perform for locals

The Nelson City Brass Band and the Nelson Youth Brass Band will be performing in town this weekend, giving locals an opportunity to watch them ahead of nationals the following week. The pre-contest fundraiser is being held at Nelson College hall on Sunday July 1 from 2pm. The senior team, conducted by Mic Dowrick, is competing in the C-grade of the National Contest in Timaru. The youth band, conducted by Nick Sharpe, will compete in the under 19 section. Last time the youth band competed at nationals, two years ago, it won it. This is the first time “in a long time” that Nelson is sending a senior team. Five locals will also be competing in solo competitions.

SPORT Nelson wins Tasman Trophy Galbraith Group Nelson may have stumbled in last year’s division one final against Wakatu Marist, but there was no denying the side’s dominance on Saturday as it romped home to win the inaugural Bayleys Tasman Trophy 35-0. Nelson scored first points at a rain-soaked Trafalgar Park courtesy of two first half tries by Andrew Goodman and Danny Glover.

Andrew also landed one penalty goal. Nelson’s ruthlessness on attack has been a catalyst for its impressive start to the season, which sees the side more than 20 points clear of second place in the Car Company division one standings, but it was the side’s defence that paid dividends throughout the encounter. Motocross champs pulls big crowd

Around 180 people witnessed the inaugural Tasman Secondary Schools and Years 7 and 8 Teams motocross held at the Parkes property, 88 Valley, Wakefield on Sunday. Supported by Sport Tasman and hosted by the Nelson Motorcycle Club in conjunction with MotoX Events, 63 riders thrilled the crowd with close and fast racing on a perfectly groomed track. Individual points and honours were up for grabs as well as the all important Teams trophy consisting of 3 riders per team. Jackson Walker of Broadgreen Intermediate owned the small wheel 85/150 class with four outright wins leaving Joel Madsen-Clark and Ethan Couper

to claim 2nd and 3rd respectively. Clayton Roeske of Waimea Intermediate had to fight for first place in the big wheel 85/150 class from a consistent Ethan Waters with George Holland rounding out third. The speed and stamina of Bradley Biggs from Waimea College was too much for the 20 other 125/250 class riders to match. A hard fight and deserved second place went to Liam Hutton also of Waimea College with Nelson College’s Ethan Bruce taking third. Twelve teams fought for the top school honours with the combined total of Waimea College just edging out Waimea Intermediate which came second and Nelson College placed third.

The country's fastest growing sport is having similar effects in Nelson. Futsal, an indoor variant to football, has called the Nelson College for Girls Hall home on Monday nights but due to the sport's growing popularity, a new winter league will also be held on Wednesdays. Currently, Nelson Bays Fustal has 16 teams that compete in its Autumn League on Monday. But that demand is now bursting at the seams and the sport's leading figure in Nelson says it's time for new players and teams to join the flow over on a Wednesday. The first week is free. "I just want to let people know that now is the time to give it a go. If I could replicate on a Wednesday night what we do on a Monday night then I'd be happy as, it'd be brilliant," says coordinator John Vaughan. The Winter League is even open to players who do not have a team organised. It is common for players to show interest and be put into teams on the night. Participation numbers have grown 25 per cent over the past six months. Futsal is part of New Zealand Football's Whole of Football Plan, which was implemented following the 2010 FIFA World Cup to develop future stars. Nelson's own future futsal players are starting to develop now as well with the region sending an Under-15 representative side to a junior futsal tournament in Wellington next month. If you are interested in playing futsal or want to find out more information on the sport, please contact John on 027 547 4436.

Sparks fly into top three The Nelson Sparks were one early morning tipoff away from a perfect start to the Women's Basketball Championship season. The 53-43 loss to Waitakere West Auckland Rangers was the only blight on an otherwise superb first up tournament that was highlighted by a 50-42 victory over the Canterbury Wildcats late on Sunday afternoon. The WBC, which is the premier basketball tournament for women in New Zealand, is held in a different format from the men's equivalent. Instead of playing each weekend on a home and away basis, the WBC is held over three separate three day tournaments. The final tournament will also hold the playoffs. Nelson Sparks welcomed back Jelena Vucinic and Jessica Bygate from the United States for the tournament, while a number of other players studying at university also donned the blue singlet. Youngsters Kaitlyn Stringer, Lily Hospers and Gracie Roberts were named in the initial squad as head coach Tatjana Zizic looked for a mixture of youth and experience. Jodi Hikuroa, Lisa Book and Kat Jones were all used to good effect throughout the tournament. Big wins over Palmerston North Storm and the Taranaki Trojans in the first two rounds had put Nelson on top of the standings early. But Sunday morning's loss has left the side in third place going into tournament two next month. The unusual time of an 8am tipoff for Sunday's clash with Waitakere West Auckland was no excuse as Tatjana cited a lack of execution for the loss. Rangers were clinical from the floor, nailing shots at 60 per cent throughout the encounter. "Apart from that I was really happy. It was the first tournament and we had about three or four players come into the squad and we didn't have much time as a team," she says. The next two tournaments will be held in July and August in Hutt Valley and Dunedin.

Stoke hits form at right end of season A two week break may have been just what Stoke needed. Due to a default and a bye Accesman Stoke's division one team was able to mend battered bodies and refocus ahead of a run to the finals and proved why it cannot be discounted, toppling in form Wanderers, 46-18. Stoke dominated in all facets of the game. The victory was paved by an immense game from the Stoke forwards, marshalled by half back Shawn Begg. The Stoke pack provided the necessary front foot ball to combine well with the backs. Stoke went into the break in unfamiliar territory with a comfortable 29-3 lead already securing a well needed bonus point. This was Sam’s inaugural game for the division one team, turning in a fantastic performance, and an extremely valuable contribution to the team effort. Stoke starts strong in new grade The two teams which gained promotion to Grade 7 - Stoke Power Signs and Suburban Gold faced off at Saxton Saturday on Saturday. Suburban had the better start and had an 8-7 lead after the first quarter, courtesy of some excellent shooting by goal attack Georgia Harris. Stoke Power Signs coach, Natalie Ewing introduced Courtney Musgrove at wing attack and made four positional changes which made an impact. The most effective was Tara Beleski’s move out to goal defence. She came into her own with more room to roam where she picked up numerous well timed intercepts. Tara displayed speed through court and rebounded strongly and was a formidable

defensive unit with Savanna Adams. Stoke outscored Suburban in the second period to go into the major break 18-15 up. Suburban lifted its game in the third quarter on the back of some hard work by mid courters Caitlin Hampton and Alex McCombe who hassled their opposites for every scrap of ball. The quarter was shared at 7 apiece. Stoke moved up a gear in the final period when it outscored Suburban by two to one. Shooters, Zoe Cookson and Joy Symthe were the force behind the resurgence as they moved the circle to find their favoured shooting position. Zoe also got through a power of work defensively as she had considerable tip ball. The shooters had an abundance of quality ball delivered by Tessa Wright from centre. Tessa fed intelligently, with beautiful angles - from the sideline it looked as if the ball was astray as it left her hands, however there were only three passes that did not reach their target and given Tessa’s workload it was a pretty impressive negative statistic. Courtney did great work off the line and received the bulk of the centre passes. Suburban coach, Carole Ferguson-Leslie was rapt with her players’ performance. Her girls looked focussed from the onset, they did a bit of jiving in their warm up - the music coming from the other end of the stadium where the New Zealand Women’s Basketball Tournament was competing. Suburban played with passion and was intent in playing a strong defensive game and was unlucky to miss out on a Suburban’s Megan Blance fires off the ball after strong defence bonus point in the 27-35 loss. by Stoke’s Zoe Cookson. Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club This week we are looking at areas to jig kingfish. The most common area close to Nelson in summer is around the mussel farms close to Motueka. Use a 200gm – 300gm jig close to the ends of the farms at first light and be prepared to move away from the structure when you hook up. Another way is to throw a stickbait or popper into the farm and have another person jigging on the boat, like switch baiting marlin. The most common area to target big kingfish is around D’Urville Island. Look for areas of fast moving water with steep dropoffs. Use your sounder to find the schools of bait fish and look for kingfish around the outsides of these schools. Be prepared to change jigs a lot until

you find one that will work. Having a good range of different jigs is a must. Top, bottom and middle weighted jigs, different colours, sizes and shapes, you can never cover enough bases, and one of them will work. Keep your line straight up and down to maximise your hook-up rate. Remember don’t gaff your fish, lift them out with your heavy leader, tag and release your fish. We recommend one fish per boat per day to keep the fishery sustainable. Come and see us at the DBFC club, to learn from members like Troy, on how to land, tag and release these awesome fish. Visit www.youtube.com/ fishinnelson for more local fishing action.

Nelson's Punt excited about Olympics Phillip Rollo Nelson's Anita Punt looks destined to receive her 100th test cap on the biggest stage of them all – the 2012 Olympic Games. The pacey Black Sticks attacking midfielder has been involved in the national side for the past four years, having represented New Zealand at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Anita will officially make her Olympic debut in London, following her selection in the 16-person squad earlier this month. The former Waimea College product currently sits on 93 tests and was quick to point out that the big 100 should be reached in London, after the four nations tournament in Germany next month. "If I play all of those games in Germany then that's four caps so I most probably will get my 100th in London which is pretty exciting," says Anita. "Hopefully it goes to plan and that happens." The Black Sticks women are ranked sixth in the world but Anita was realistic about the team's medal chances in London despite winning bronze at last year's Champions Trophy. "Each team will be at its best because it's the Olympics so it is going to be really tough for us. But if we play well as a team then we can beat anyone. But we don't want to think about medals yet." Joining New Zealand in Pool B is Argentina, Germany, Australia, United States and South Africa. Anita Punt. Australia will be New Zealand's first opponents at the Games. "I think it's good to play them first because we've played them a lot and it's such a good rivalry. At the moment we're slightly ahead of them in terms of winning so we just have to go there and play game by game." According to Hockey New Zealand's website, Anita's blinding speed over 10m would put her in the top eight in the men's squad. While speed is her most dangerous weapon on the turf, Anita was quick to distinguish the hype that she was the fastest women's player in the world. "It's not actually proven so I don't like to say that at all. I've never raced everyone. But that's what I bring to the team; speed and fitness. When I don't play as well, it's my confidence in my speed not my ability in hockey." In an Olympic year, playing for the Black Sticks women's team is a full-time job, compared with the men's team which has players that work 9-5 jobs every day of the week and find time to train before or after. Anita's parents, sister and brothers will be traveling to London to watch her play at the Olympics and she says she is excited about the prospect of completing her childhood dream of playing at the Olympics. "I'm from little old Richmond, Nelson. I never thought I'd get to go to an Olympic Games. You watch it on TV and dream about it but to actually go is going to be great. But I don't want to get too overwhelmed because I don't want it to affect my performance."
