Inferno destroys local man’s plane Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The owner of a light aircraft was left utterly heartbroken last week after his 60-year-old plane was completely destroyed by a fire at Malibu Park airfield in Teapot Valley, Wakefield. Jason Deer, who had owned the Cessna 185 since 2015, says, “It’s devastating. I’ve had condolence messages from all over the country this week.” The plane was in the hanger for routine maintenance when it caught fire and was quickly engulfed by flames. Jason was nearby and his first reaction was to push the plane outside to save the hanger and another plane. After calling 111, he joined others trying to put the inferno out, but by the time the fire brigade arrived, all that was left burning was the tyre. “You can tell it was an airplane once, but it was destroyed beyond rebuilding,” says Jason. Sixty years of aviation history was also lost in the fire as the Cessna, ZK-CAK, was the first of its kind brought into New Zealand back in 1961, and the 17th built worldwide. “She just had her 60th birthday last week,” says Jason. “She was my pride and joy. One brief moment in time and she’s all gone.” Her initial use was carrying
newspapers and passengers from Nelson to the West Coast. In the early 80s, CAK was registered as an air ambulance and later was used for parachute operations. After use for aerial spraying, she
passed back into private ownership. Jason has enjoyed many hours flying over mountains and into the back country. He says 185s are a handful, but very satisfying
to fly. “She was a grand ol’ lady, the other woman in my life,” he says. “At the beginning of the day last week, there was no way I could ever have imagined what has now
happened to her.” Over the years his plane has been the one constant thing in his life that he wouldn’t sell. Jason says

Inferno destroys local man’s plane from PAGE 1 he didn’t look at himself as the owner of CAK, more of a guardian of history. Along the way, CAK has experienced other incidents where repair was needed, usually caused by a ‘ground loop’, where there
is loss of directional control and the plane spins around. Damage to the undercarriage or wing tips can result, but CAK was always rebuildable after these. “I always thought that if I were to write the plane off it would be at the end of a back country airstrip,” says Jason.
He knows he wants another plane, but there aren’t many for sale that are suited to land on the remote airstrips he enjoys. Jason says that although no-one was hurt in the fire, they did follow advice from fire crew to go to the Emergency Department to be checked for smoke inhalation.

Bulk funding to meet real needs Jenny Nicholson
A new initiative that is the work of local health professionals is giving GPs freedom to use some allocated funds for the benefit of their patients. Bulk funding has replaced the Care Plus scheme, acknowledging that GPs best know the needs of their patient population. Whereas in the past GPs were required to apply for funding for individuals, they now receive money each quarter and can use it as they see fit without the Primary Health Organisation determining how the funds are used. “We are very proud of this initiative. The GP knows the needs of their practice so can apply funds dependent on the clinical needs in front of them,” says

Nelson Bays Primary Health General Manager of Primary Care, Charlotte Etheridge. She says the traditional Care Plus scheme was quite structured, and as people’s health changed it didn’t represent those changes. The changes that came into effect on 1 January 2021 are the result of a local working group comprised of GPs, practice managers, Māori Health workers and Nelson Bays Primary Health. While a patient will usually still be required to pay a co-payment, this is at the discretion of the GP. Data collated shows that one use of the funds is to offset the cost of extended consultations. Charlotte says feedback from GPs is ‘it is a fantastic scheme.’

Under the revised plan, the Waimea Water Limited (WWL) and the ratepayers still share the costs of paying the interest for just five years, with irrigators taking over payment after that. The five-year term took into account the higher costs at the front end of operating
the dam. “They peak, and then they come down,” says Mike. The ratepayer contribution will begin on 1 July 2021 and the water charges to irrigators are likely to begin in the July 2022 to June 2023 year. The revised option still needs to be agreed on by all parties by 4 June, and the results will be made public shortly after.

Dinner’s on us Jenny Nicholson
When Raeward Fresh and Under the Hood BBQ asked for nominations for free meals as part of an initiative to give back to deserving people in the community, one woman was nominated by seven different people. Richmond’s Jodie Lodge is usually on the other side of giving, making meals for others, but has never had a meal cooked and delivered to her. “Nothing like this has ever happened to me before,” says Jodie, Jodie’s family received just one of 10 meals delivered this month as part of an initiative set up by Raeward Fresh and Under the Hood BBQ. Initially the scheme was to give away
five meals to locals in the community, but Under the Hood BBQ’s Dave King said, when they received 90 nominations, he realised five wasn’t enough. Raeward Fresh’s Laura Caldwell says they joined forces to set up Dinner On Us two years ago and run it three or four times a year. Raeward provides the food and Dave cooks it. She says many of the meals go to people or families who are having a hard time, but they also provide meals for some in the community who go above and beyond. Wakefield’s Karen Marfell said the meal her family received was fantastic. “My HR manager nominated me,” she says. “The company has been so supportive of me on the journey I’ve been on re-
cently. I had a hip replacement and just as I was recovering was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Now the home we live in is being sold, so we need to find new accommodation.” Tim Rutherford was thankful for their meal, saying it took the load off for the night. Tim’s wife Shannon recently gave birth to Finn, and not long after two-year-old Archer broke his leg on the trampoline. The concept of giving away BBQ meals has spread to other countries, including Croatia, Australia, and Canada. “People have messaged me to say they are so inspired by it that they are setting it up in their own country,” says Dave. Future dinners will be advertised on Raeward and Under the Hood BBQ websites.

The Hope School children thought up a great way to fundraise for Pink Shirt Day last Friday with a pink-themed cake stall. With pink cupcakes, pink ginger slices, pink jellies and more, morning tea certainly was a treat for the school. The Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying campaign raises money for the Mental Health Foundation to raise awareness about bullying. Celebrated annually around the world, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against bullying after a boy was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In New Zealand, Pink Shirt Day works to create schools and communities where everyone feels safe, valued and respected. Nelson Matters I have three concerns about last week’s Budget. The Government is borrowing $100 billion over the next four years, or $60,000 for every household. This increases New Zealand debt to record levels not seen since the painful economic crisis of the early 1990s when it was 48% of GDP. National got it down through the 1990’s to 20% by 2000.
Bill English rightly borrowed to get New Zealand through the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 and the Christchurch Earthquakes in 2011 and debt peaked at 25% in 2012. He got back into surplus in 2014, and had debt back down to 19% by 2017. Grant Robertson has already increased debt to 33% and this Budget increases it again to 48% of GDP in 2025. It
plans deficits for all of the next 6 years. The Budget debate in Parliament last week had Labour MP’s boasting of being “proud socialists”. My problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other peoples money. My second concern is that the Budget has nothing for the average Nelson family. There is $500 million to pay for restructuring in health but doc-
tors’ and nurses’ salaries are frozen for 3 years. Teachers and police are also expected to accept zero increase in wages while the cost of rent, insurance, rates and food rises. Most working families are going backwards. My third concern is the lack of a future plan to get New Zealand’s economy growing again. The vaccine rollout is amongst the slowest in the
world limiting the opportunity for New Zealand to recover. We should be better supporting people into jobs rather than paying them more to do nothing. Science funding is being reduced. Education was ignored. Infrastructure and housing projects announced years ago as shovel ready are not happening. New Zealand can do much better. Advert.

Colourful sewing gives gift of dignity Jenny Nicholson Reporter

Giving dignity to women and girls is the motivation behind a group of local women who meet twice a week to sew colourful fabrics into reusable sanitary pads. The group, led by Debra Gibbs of Richmond Rotary, have distributed 1300 kits over the two years they have been meeting. “Some have gone overseas to Ghana, India, Zimbabwe and Cambodia and other kits are given locally to Women’s Refuge, Toi Toi Medical Centre, Salvation Army and the Community Karitane nurses,” says Debra. Each kit contains two shields and eight liners, and the kits that go overseas also have two pairs of cotton knickers, a flannel, soap, a wash bag, and a menstrual chart all packaged in a colourful drawstring bag. None are given out overseas without an educa-

Fire crews were still on the scene of a factory fire in Brightwater on Tuesday morning after the fire broke out just before midnight Monday on Factory Road. FENZ spokesperson Simon Lyford says, upon arrival the 30m by 50m building was “well-involved” with flames. The double-storey factory was holding a lot of wood product. Firefighters were barred from entering the building and tackling the flames internally due to the risk of a ‘dust explosion’. An aerial appliance with a large ladder to tackle the flames from above was used, along with water tankers. At the point of going to press, crews were awaiting fire investigators to identify the cause of the blaze.
TDC launches a community app
Tasman District Council now has a free mobile app called Antenno, which sends alerts and notifications on places and topics locals care about. Things like water shutdowns, events, consultations, road closures and changes in recycling and rubbish collection are all on there. It can also make engaging with the community easier by giving the ability to report issues and respond to surveys. Download it from the Android Google Store and iPhone App Store.

The sun shone for what was undeniably one of the biggest turn-outs Wakefield has ever seen. The brand-new skills park has put the local town on the map as a destination for skaters, bikers and scooter fans.
“We couldn’t have wished for a better day,” says project manager Dan Shallcrass. “The support we got was unbelievable. Kelly would have been so proud to know he is the inspiration for this whole thing.” Families turned out in their hundreds, and time slots for each age

They rely on you
Have you ever seen a fake bank note? I remember a time at our boot market when a stall holder approached one of the leaders and showed them a counterfeit $20 bill that someone had tried to use to buy something from them. Thankfully, after closer inspection the stall holder realized that something was not quite right, and we were able to get things sorted out. As we look in the Bible, we see that the Apostle Paul also had to sort out a counterfeit problem because some people he loved, in the church at Corinth, had been sucked in by a counterfeit Gospel message - Gospel means Good News - which portrayed a very different Jesus than the real, historic Jesus that the apostles had seen, heard, and been commissioned to proclaim (see 2 Corinthians 11:4). How on earth did the church get sucked in by a counterfeit gospel? Well, the answer is that the messengers of this different gospel were extremely compelling, very sophisticated and appeared entirely sincere. Now, the apostle Paul was not very PC about all this! In fact, we see in 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 that Paul called those who were damaging
God’s people with this counterfeit gospel, ‘servants of Satan’! Friends, What I am about to say I do not really want to say (because I do not like rocking the boat) but because I truly care about God’s people, I know I must. Sadly, there are people in churches today, who are also promoting a counterfeit Gospel. I believe I need to warn believers that there is an extremely subtle and insidious move amidst the church today that is growing in popularity through popular teachers like Richard Rohr, Rob Bell, William Paul Young (the author of ‘the Shack’) et al. These teachers and other teachers like them, ironically under that banner of ‘Progressive Christianity’, more often than not diminish and downplay the importance and trustworthiness of God’s word (the Scripture); deny the atoning work of the cross (i.e., that Jesus died for “our sins” 1 Cor 15:3), and worst of all, they paint an extremely distorted picture of who Jesus, God’s promised Messiah, really is. For those who are interested, Alisa Childers book ‘Another Gospel’ graciously, but effectively, exposes this counterfeit. I write to you as beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, knowing that those who are forewarned are forearmed.

The Diary of Sarah Higgins Ruth Russ After living, during their early years of marriage, in a room at Sarah’s father’s house, Sydney and Sarah decided to move onto their own land. They had built a little dairy to sell Sarah’s milk and cheese, but Sarah ‘wanted a kitchen’. Sydney could not take time off work to build a new house, so he would get up early and mix mud before going to work. Sarah describes their eventual little house at Spring Grove, ‘twenty feat long an twelve fet wide’, as two ‘nice rooms’ with a chimney and a mud oven. By this time they had several children, the older girls able enough to look after the little ones. Sarah
decided to ‘go nursing’ (midwifery), tagging along with Doctor Oldham for several years until she had learned enough to go out herself. She delivered about 350 babies into the world during her time, but lamented that ‘it tock me away to much so I ad to give som of it up’. At home, Sarah sewed men’s trousers and plain dresses for two shillings. As the children grew in age and number (there would eventually be eleven Higgins offspring), Sydney built them a new house with nine bedrooms. By 1882 he owned 395 acres of land. The entrepreneurial couple found a variety of ways to make money, some successful and some not. Sydney and the boys planted a hop garden but ‘they did not make much

Both Sarah and Sydney’s obituaries described the couple as tremendously admirable people. Sarah was remembered as ‘a most unselfish, energetic, and hard-working woman… The late Mr and Mrs Higgins were known throughout the district by their Christian lives and hospitality… giving New Zealand…a number of God-fearing and industrious children who are bringing up families in the same righteous manner.’ Sarah left an impressive 57 grandchildren, 87 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild to mourn her loss.

Gumboot Friday is a fun way for Kiwis to join in the mental health conversation, while raising money to provide free counselling for New Zealand kids in need. Last year, 175 young people died by suicide and an estimated 3500 attempted to take their own lives. While government agencies are doing their best, some young people are waiting up to six months to receive the counselling they urgently need. I am Hope is the youth and community-focused support group run by The Key to Life charitable trust, started by Mike King. For the last three years, the trust has been promoting positive attitudinal change in schools and communities throughout New Zealand, and funding private care and counselling for young people stuck on waiting lists. I am Hope connects kids with mental health counsellors and practitioners in their region or online, so they can get timely support, without the added stress of paying the bill. In 2019/2020, I am Hope raised two

million dollars through Gumboot Friday and funded 15,500 counselling sessions for young New Zealanders. How can you help? For people struggling with depression, it can feel like walking through mud every day. So, the organisers of Gumboot Friday are asking for your support – put your gumboots on, give a gold coin donation and involve your workplace, school or organisation. You can purchase ‘Gumboot Friday’ branded t-shirts and merchandise, and when you wear it be open to having vulnerable conversations with friends or family members. You can make a donation via internet banking, in person at any Kiwibank branch and on Gumboot Friday, you can donate via ‘Piggy Boots’ at participating retailers and events. 100 percent of your donation goes to counselling for Kiwi kids and young people aged 05-24 years. JIM BEAM WHITE LABEL 1.125 LITRE OR JIM BEAM BLACK BOURBON 1 LITRE
DRUMSHANBO GUNPOWDER PREMIUM IRISH GIN Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin explodes with flavour on the palate. Citrus once again dominates. This time its grapefruit. Juniper and green tea are present mid palate: the juniper herbaceous and bright, the green tea calling to mind Jasmine green tea. The finish is mildly warming with a pleasant heat.
Jim Beam Black: A full-bodied bourbon with an extra level of elegance and refinement that’s meant to be sipped and savored. And of course, just like its younger brother, the original Jim Beam, it’s best when shared with others.

Taylors Wanderers Sports Club rugby teams welcomed the return to Trafalgar Park on Saturday with Div 1 and Div 2 games against Nelson, resulting in two very good victories. The A. C. Palmer & Sons-sponsored Div 2 team struggled early despite a handy territorial and possession advantage with 3 penalties to Gareth Palmer the sole scoring method for 20 minutes. A yellow card against Nelson eventually resulted in Wanderers opening try and a 16-0 lead at halftime. The second half opened with a rejuvenated Nelson team carrying the game to Wanderers and two quick tries closed the game up to 16-14 and the promise of a game going either way. However, Maloni Lama’s entry at halfback coincided with a collective raising of standards by Wanderers and long periods of continuity and ball movement encouraged hard running from backs and forwards alike, with Taine Wastney and both sets of brothers, Ducati and Bronson Morrell-Hopa, and Mitchell and Bailey Donaldson, particularly active. Tries were scored by Ducati (2), Bronson, Maloni Lama and Mitchell Donaldson with Gareth Palmer adding 3 conversions and 3 penalties for a final score of 40-14. The main event, the Div 1 game, was similar in pattern with the first half a tense, tight affair between two teams desperate for a win but playing a positive match. Nelson pinned Wan-

Following a Nelson overthrow to a lineout, Chris secured the ball and strolled over for the opening try. Luca Roden converted and then added a penalty for a 10-0 lead after 15 minutes, but Nelson struck back with two well taken tries, regaining the lead at 10-14. Wanderers had the final say with a try to Monu Moli creating a score line of 1514 at the break. As in the earlier game, the second half saw Wanderers slowly gain ascendancy based around solid set play, producing quality ball from lineouts and scrums, aided by some strong ball carries by Will Hamilton in midfield which allowed the Wanderers forwards to run

hard in phase plays, with Haluafia and the Moli brothers, Sam and Monu, to the fore. Behind the pack, Tyler Power and Luca Roden directed play and distributed well, enabling full engagement from an enthusiastic backline, ultimately scoring five additional tries and keeping Nelson scoreless in the second period. Tries were scored by Ryan Coxon, Chris Haluafia (2), Monu Moli (2), Fletcher Matthews and Maloni Lama with Luca Roden adding 4 conversions and a penalty for the 46-14 victory. Coach Glenn Grant was satisfied with the performance in a game that was much tougher than the final score might suggest, especially pleased with the control exerted at key times and the teamwork displayed.

Late goal sinks Suburbs, Prices unbeaten Jonty Dine Reporter
jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz
After a scoreless 87 minutes, Nelson Suburbs conceded a heart-breaking late goal against Coastal Spirit at Saxton Field on Saturday. A win would have seen Suburbs move to third spot on the table after Christchurch and Selwyn played out a 3-all draw. The match saw Jordan Yong returning from injury while Suburbs Academy products Noah Platt and Sam Shelling were promoted. This weekend Suburbs head south to take on Nomads. In local division one action, Motueka still sits top of the points table after holding FC
Nelson Locomotive to a 2-all draw at Guppy Park on Saturday. The FC 1st XI was also made to work hard for a 4-2 win over Golden Bay. Coach Paul Brydon says the men from Golden Bay kept them honest. “It is a good league this year with the extra teams.” Arguably the biggest upset of the round came at Jubilee Park as Richmond picked up a 2-0 win over the defending champion Rangers. Suburbs completed the round with a 5-1 rout of Tahuna. In Nelson Netball action, Richmond F45 backed up its upset win over Jacks OPD last week with a thrilling one-goal win over Stoke NBS at Saxton Stadium on Thursday.
The new combinations for Richmond appear to be gelling nicely with the side showing great composure to edge Stoke 34-33. After suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of Prices Waimea Ahurei in the opening round, Richmond has rebounded with two crucial wins to sit just one point behind powerhouses Jacks. Meanwhile, Jacks bounced back from last week’s loss with a resounding 53-23 victory over Nelson College for Girls. The defending champions also picked up an easy win, cruising to a 64-30 rout of its feeder side Prices Pango. The undefeated Prices Ahurei sit alone on top of the table on 12 points with an 81-goal differential. Emily O’Donnell, Andrew Barker (Grandad), Kevin O’Donnell and Sophie O’Donnell running in the Wallace Shield. Another warm sunny day at Rabbit Island and another great turn out of runners and walkers for the second in the series of three Waimea Harriers Wallace Shield cross country events. It was great to see so many family groups out running together and many grandparents supporting them. Totara picnic area was buzzing with about 250 enthusiastic competitors and supporters. It has been particularly pleasing to have 80 cheerful, energetic children taking part each week, competing over a choice of one, two or three undulating 1.7km laps. Each event in the series has its own special feature, with last week’s being an ‘estimate your time race’. Photo: SallyAnne Jones.

Kahurangi go top, Nelson survives St Bedes scare Jonty Dine Kahurangi are the outright leaders of the Tasman Trophy after beating Waimea Old Boys in a thrilling top-of-the-table clash in Riwaka on Saturday. In a match that saw several lead changes, Kahurangi prevailed 35-34 to claim its sixth straight victory of the season. Both sides were unbeaten heading into the round seven clash and the meeting more than lived up to the hype. Meanwhile, Wanderers’ dominant 46-14 win over Nelson at Trafalgar Park had to be called off early due to a major injury. Fletcher Matthews knows all too well the perils of injury and the
Wanderer’s captain sympathised with Nelson prop Christian Tupuola who lay prone on the deck at the end of the match. “I have had plenty in my time and it’s never nice to end a game early, especially when someone is down like that.” The fullback says, after a slow start to the season, his side is finally beginning to gel. “We have been up and down with a couple of draws and losses, but we have talked about that it just takes one game before it clicks.” Sitting toward the bottom half of the table, Wanderers will need four wins from four to make the play-offs. “Today was a good start, we have still got a chance and we are going to give it a good crack.”

he was equally as successful as part of championship teams in 1985 and from 1988-1990. Gordon also coached a championship winning team in 1995. More recently, Ben Coman recalls many highlights as he continued the family tradition by playing in the forwards. Ben was a member of the winning Nelson Bays Championship team in 2013, recalled as a special time witnessed by family and friends. He fondly recollects that team as one of the strongest club sides he had played with. The team, boasting a number of Super Rugby and international-calibre players, remained together for the following season, repeating history by winning the Championship again in 2014. Throughout his rugby career Ben represented the Waimea Senior A side over 16 years, from his first season in 2004 un-
The Coman family has a long history with the Waimea Rugby Club which extends beyond the three generations discussed here. Readers may be familiar with the late Bill Coman, who died in November 2019. Bill had many fond memories of his days playing for the Waimea Club. He often reminded family that he was a bit more versatile than they were, having played every position in the forwards, except hooker. In 1952 and 1958, Bill was a member of championship winning teams and he also coached a Senior A championship team in 1961. Bill’s late son Gordon didn’t quite manage to beat Bill in family rivalry regarding versatility - having only played lock, blindside flanker and No 8 during his rugby career! However,

Latterly Ben was fortunate enough to play with his youngest brother Tim, together winning a Tasman Trophy title in 2017 and a Nelson Bays Championship in 2019. Meanwhile, their brother Mike took up a professional rugby career. Ben realised his goal to represent the Tasman Mako in 2010 and was named in the New Zealand Heartland side in 2012.
