Building sells for $100 Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Tasman District Council has sold the former Brightwater Bowls Club rooms to the Wanderer’s Community Sports Club for just $100. The clubrooms was gifted to the

council when the bowls club folded and Wanderers have been looking to purchase the building since 2019. Marty Davis, who spearheaded efforts to buy the building, says he was absolutely rapt that the resolution to transfer ownership was passed last Thursday. Marty recently retired as Wan-

derer’s Sports Club director of sports but says he couldn’t be happier. “It is a wonderful gesture from the TDC,” says Marty. “It will be a massive benefit for Brightwater and beyond.” The resolution to transfer ownership of the former bowls club building in Brightwater to Wan-

derers Community Sports Inc (Club) was carried, with the cost to Wanderers Community Sports Club $100 plus GST. As yet, no specific date has been agreed on for the transfer. TDC reserves and facilities manager Richard Hollier says the building is already leased to the club so there will be no obvious

difference from a community perspective. He says it contributes to goals of the Tasman Climate Change Plan 2019 by encouraging local recreation and thereby potentially reducing emissions. The club has leased the building

Appleby School gets behind sustainability Jo Kent Chickens roaming the school yard and students planting more than 300 trees have helped a local school earn the title of Enviroschool. Appleby is the latest Tasman school to become an ‘Enviroschool’, bringing the number in the region to 30. By joining the programme, the school has committed to become more sustainable for future generations. Teacher Talia Ryan says they’ve already introduced many measures to become more environmentally aware. “We’ve planted over 300 trees, including edible fruit trees, outside classrooms which the kids can eat, and we’ve now got three chickens, too.”

It has been used as a gymnasium, health and wellbeing centre and the club has also carried out building improvements on it in recent years. Teachers seek assistance on managing anxiety in students Erin Bradnock Reporter

erin@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Local teachers have flocked to a workshop on how to manage growing anxiety in students in the wake of a new report revealing that almost half of school leaders see it as the single biggest issue in schooling. Those leaders say that exposure to emotional stress and the uncertainties of Covid-19 have added to the strain on mental health for many young people and families. Waimea Intermediate teacher Jane Fisher says the issue of anxiety in schools is a growing problem. “We now have two counsellors at school instead of one, which shows how the need has grown,” she says. Jane says that, in her 20 years as a teacher, anxiety has been an issue, but people feel more comfortable discussing it now. A recent Life Education Trust report reveals how anxiety continues to be identified as a major concern for young people in schools. The trust found 89 per cent of school leaders see anxiety as an issue for school children with 40 per cent reporting anxiety as a “significant issue”. The trust has run its online

In response, the trust has rolled out workshops for teachers on how to recognise, approach and deal with anxiety in their students. About 80 local teachers registered to take part in a teacherfocused workshop, offering insights into childhood anxiety and strategies to support anxious children. The workshop recognises that teachers are often the first port of call for families who are concerned about their child’s emotional well-being or behaviour. Jane says as issues surrounding mental health and anxiety are destigmatised, schools need to have support

in place. “I think mental health is less stigmatised now. We’re starting to see it as a part of our health and life.” Life Education Trust chief executive John O’Connell says lockdown has exacerbated issues and had a deep impact on students as they readjust to learning in and out of alert level changes. “This year’s lockdowns will also have an impact. Children today are seeing global events unfold as they happen with updated streams to phones and other devices, without the ability to process these adult concepts. It’s a far cry from past generations where children were isolated from this information.

NEWS Surpluses seen in many of council’s operational areas: Surpluses in many of the Tasman District Council’s (TDC) operational areas were discussed at last week’s council meeting. TDC communications and change manager Chris Choat says $4 million has already been identified within the Long Term Plan (LTP) as surplus going towards offsetting rates. He says that a large number of the surpluses were not significant but will be absorbed into the following year’s budgets. High levels of harvesting combined with good log prices resulted in a surplus for the TDC forestry activity of $12.5 million. Community housing: TDC community housing activity has seen a surplus of $787,000 after expenditure came in under budget last year. Councillor Susan Edwards says there are still a number of upgrades needed on properties to meet central government requirements for tenants. She wasn’t sure what proportion of the surplus would be used in the upgrades which are intended to be completed by June 2022. Chris Choat says the community housing portfolio is run within a closed account and funding within the account is used to maintain the prop-

erties at no cost to the ratepayer. New structure for Fire and Emergency New Zealand: Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) has restructured into 17 new districts, replacing an historic split where there were 24 urban areas and 18 rural fire districts across the country. This means that Grant Haywood is now the Nelson Marlborough district manager having spent three years as the Tasman-Marlborough Area manager. FENZ chief executive Rhys Jones says the nation-wide move bringing together 40 rural and urban fire services and 14,000 people has been a huge job. “But getting all the different firefighting set-ups working together as one national organisation has been necessary,” Rhys says. Business easier with 100 people limit: Armadillo’s owner Tony Crosbie says this weekend was a lot better than the previous weekend. “Being able to have 100 people is a lot better,” he says. “But we still have to stick to all the rules.” He says they saw about 70 per cent of normal trade this weekend. However, he says his other property, the Star and Garter, is still really quiet. “It was the same last lockdown,” Tony says.

Police bus turned into Covid vaccination clinic Jenny Nicholson Reporter

A police booze bus has been transformed from testing drink drivers to fighting Covid-19, as part of Nelson Marlborough Health’s efforts to boost vaccination rates in the region. NMH principal advisor emergency management Pete Kara says the bus has been repurposed and is already doing great work in the community. “It makes it easier to take the clinic to the people,” says Pete. Nelson Bays Primary Health general manager primary care, Charlotte Etheridge, says they are thinking outside the square regarding locations. “We are using bite size times and locations to try and give people opportunity to be vaccinated,” she says. “We are looking at where people are at the beginning and end of the day, because often they are at work or at home with family during the day.” Pop-up clinics were available in the Richmond Mall carpark on Wednesday and Thursday. Charlotte says about 25 people were vaccinated over the two days and though they are not large numbers, the bus was about giving locals more opportunity to be vaccinated. “That number may seem small, but it was all first doses,” she says. “That’s a big win for us.” Latest Ministry of Health figures available through Stats New Zealand show that three quarters of those eligible in the Top of the South region have received at least one vaccine. At 76.9 per cent we come in fourth for those aged 12 and older who have received one vaccination, with Capital and

Coast and Hutt leading the way at 80.1 per cent. The bus is also being used for rural pop-ups in St Arnaud and Tapawera. The St Arnaud pop-up is on 1 October from 10am to 12pm. The exact location is still to be confirmed. A clinic in The Wakefield Hall on 17 October already has

more than 400 people booked in. Wakefield Pharmacy’s Scott Fry says most of the bookings are second doses, but they have capacity to book much more. He estimates they could do about 700 vaccines. “We would prefer bookings

but will take walk-ins,” he says. “Combining the doctors and the pharmacy means we have a bigger capacity.” The clinic on Queen Street is also continuing to take walkins. Another initiative to increase vaccination accessibility has been put in place by the Tasman District Council (TDC), along with Nelson City Council. They are offering free bus rides to vaccination clinics and the free ride also applies to caregivers and dependents of those being vaccinated. “Free bus rides are for everyone, they must have proof of appointment and the free travel is for that day only,” says TDC communications and change manager Chris Choat. Plans are also in place for clinics after school at Nelson College this week and Charlotte Etheridge says they are working with other schools to find a time that would suit them.

An eye for detail and infectious personality has earned a young Nelson builder the title of Upper South Island Apprentice of the Year. Finn Eden, 21, was named as the region’s top building apprentice at an online awards ceremony last Wednesday night. Tasman Homes director Garry Nott, who employs Finn, says he is an outstanding young man who has already been managing full build jobs. “He’s definitely a step above the norm ... he’s a real credit to the team.” The 2021 Registered Master Builders CARTERS Apprentice

tunities in the building and construction industry. Apprentices are tested on their project man-

agement, business, presentation, and practical skills. Finn had to submit a portfolio of a building

project before an interview with judges. That was followed by a two-hour practical challenge where entrants were tasked with building a shoe rack. “It was the most intricate shoe rack I’d ever seen,” says Finn. He was one of only two to complete the challenge. Judges said Finn could be very proud of his project. They said the portfolio he submitted was of a “very high standard” and his knowledge of the project “immense”. “Overall, Finn has an infectious personality which is hard not to like. The build showed his personality, professionalism, and his eye for detail,” said a judge. He will join the country’s top apprentices to compete in the Master Builders National competition later this year.

Robin reflects on 46 years in same job Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

At 63-years-old Robin Jordan has never had a CV after all, he has worked in the same job the whole 46 years of his working life. In 1975, he was in Year 12 at Waimea College and considering a career as an accountant. But plans changed when he was offered an apprenticeship working as a radio and electronics serviceman at Rob Fairbairn Ltd. Just four years later he and two colleagues bought part of the business from their boss Rob Fairbairn, naming it FAV Services. Then, in 2000, the business became FAV Mobile Solutions. Robin has seen massive changes both in his work at FAV Mobile Solutions and in Richmond over the years. “When I started work-

ing on Queen Street, there were sheep in a paddock where Noel Leeming is now situated and more grazing in a field behind the Queen Street workshop,” says Robin. Over the years he has had to adapt to changes in technology. Initially he worked with pre-transistor radios,

helps.” Robin says he has loved his job. “I like working for myself and solving problems on the electrical and electronic side of things,” he says. “I’ve never applied for another job and never had a CV.” Thirty years ago, he was approached and asked to sell mobility scooters, and both Robin and his wife Meryl have enjoyed working with mature customers. “When we worked with car audio, it was mostly for the younger generation and they wanted everything done and then some didn’t want to pay for it,” says Robin. “Now we mostly deal with the older generation, and they want to pay even before you do the job.” They recently sold the business and are planning to enjoy semi-retirement. “We bought a motor home 18 months ago and plan to see the country,” they say.

New te reo streets make history Erin Bradnock Richmond has welcomed the final two of four new streets in full te reo Māori, the first streets in the country to reach this milestone. Last Thursday, ara o Te Ātiawa and ara o Ngā Hekenga were unveiled in the Waimeha subdivision off Ngāti Rārua St in Richmond. These streets names in full te reo join ara o Ngāti Koata and ara o Tamariki, each unveiled in the subdivision last December and April. Ara translates to ‘pathway’ or ‘passageway’ while Ngā Hekenga refers to the migration of local iwi from the north to the Top of the South, with Te Ātiawa being Thursday’s

honoured iwi. Each street was officiated and facilitated by Wakatū Incorporation with tikanga unique to each iwi. Waikawa Marae trustee chairperson and Te Ātiawa descendant Rita Keka Powick unveiled ara o Te Ātiawa, with help from her niece’s pēpi (baby) Ihaka Cameron. “It’s lovely. It’s just so humbling to see our names on the land and to see the land looked after so well.” Director of the Whenua Board Russell “Barney” Thomas describes the rain that poured during last Thursday’s unveiling as a good omen. “We were not seen in this area here in Richmond but now we are,” he says.

Local councillors views on water reform Dana Wensley

“Let’s not forget that these reforms were driven by the need to ensure safe drinking water following the Havelock North tragedy where 4 people died in 2016 after contamination of the drinking water. These reforms have now expanded to cover wastewater and stormwater. I have concerns with the modelling used, particularly around the calculations from central government which do not take into account the condition of Tasman’s network, assets or performance.”

Stuart Bryant

My view is that we are still in the information gathering phase and there is a lot we have yet to find out about how all this will work in practice and there are some key concerns with the current proposal. I do support full consultation with the community. I also believe the government MPs should be part of the consultation.

Dean McNamara

democratic input for our ratepayers. We would be a small part of a large entity and would have little input and influence over assets Tasman ratepayers have funded and paid for.

Anne Turley

At present it is illegal for Council to opt in without public consultation for disposal or sale of any major Council Asset. Hopefully the Government does not now change the rules for consultation requirements. My vote, to opt out, too much conflicting or incorrect information. I also object to the exclusion of Tapawera out of Zone C if the reform takes place.

There are a myriad of issues to be resolved before this government three water proposal is even fit for purpose. Rural and urban schemes have different needs and every consumer’s rights need to be protected. Governance, regulatory and political problems exist and are complex. Public consultation is paramount and before this can be done effectively, issues need better understanding. Big schemes can result in high costs and need accountability.

Kit Maling

Trindi Walker

Barry Dowler

There are three areas of real concern that I have which cover both for and against the reforms. The new water services Bill will put huge potential costs on rural water schemes, Tasman has three of these. What impact will this have. The splitting of the district with the Murchison area being a different entity from the rest of the district. Finally, the loss of

Consultation with owners of property is always a good place to start when considering wholesale change and especially about one of the fundamentals of life – water, as in the proposed reforms. In many places across New Zealand there is an infrastructure deficit in 3 Waters. This is what the reform programme hopes to address. At this stage of the programme we need to continue to engage with Central Government on those aspects of the reforms which need more work. For example, ownership and governance, the financial modelling, the impact of new standards, the pricing strategy and how the local voice will be heard. Councillors Celia Butler, Chris Hill, Trevor Tuffnell and Mark Greening did not respond to the request.

The proposals are at an early stage, with likely significant amendments once the 85 Councils report to the Government (D.I.A.). The objectives, to provide quality drinking water, to remove contaminated discharges of wastewater & storm water from our rivers & marine areas are acceptable. To achieve these, even by 2051, the funding requirements are considerable. There is a need for “scale”, or funding support from central Government. The role of Councils to administer these should continue—the local voice is important.

Edward Robert Higgins, known as Ted, was the eldest son of Sydney and Sarah Higgins. Born in 1851 at Spring Grove, he almost immediately began getting into accidental mishaps. His farmer father, Sydney, took Ted to Maddocks Bush when he was six-yearsold to fetch home a roller Sydney had made out of a large matai log. After hitching the roller up to two bullocks, they began to make their way home. At Mr Ricketts’ driveway, Sydney struck up a conversation with Mr Ricketts. Meanwhile, Ted climbed up onto the roller and startled the bullocks, causing them to bolt. Ted tumbled off the roller and it rolled right over him. Sydney turned around to see the bullocks rushing on but no Ted anywhere to be seen. After stopping the bullocks, Sydney went back to search for Ted, who fortunately had fallen into a muddy hole which saved his head from being crushed. Ted was covered in mud from head to toe, but with only a bruised head to show for his misadventure. Sometime later, Ted’s brother George recalls that after doing something he should not have been, Ted got in trouble with his father. Sydney went to whack him. However, Ted then got the bright idea

He went on to have another scrape involving bullocks when he was about 13-years-old. He was in the process of hitching the bullocks up to the harrows, and had just hitched the chain on between the animals when they bolted off. Knocking Ted over, the harrows collected him and dragged him along the ground until they came to a deep furrow. He dropped into it, with a line from the harrows only a centimetre from his spine. Despite this mishap, Ted was very good at ploughing, and often won the contests he entered. But this led to a further accident. After winning against an Irishman, Ted was put on his boss’s brand-new reaping machine. While putting the horses in, they bolted and knocked him over. As the machine was in gear, it carried on moving. The fingers of the machine caught the soles of Ted’s boots. This raised the machine up so that it went over his body, slicing his arm half off. His brother George wrote in detail about the incident: “I saw him as he came home with his arm in a sling and watched mother wash and dress it, with carbolic oil. An awful gash which made me feel sick. “In the course of time his arm got better but was always a crooked one.”

Happy photos needed for collage Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Budding photographers in Waimea are being asked to join in the ‘Happy in my Neighbourhood’ photo competition. Launched by Top of the South Neighbourhood Support, the idea is to get people to take photos of things around the region that makes them smile while out and about. Maree Dunlop, TSNS coordinator, says that the winning images will be made into a collage for display in Richmond library later this year. “It’s open to all ages and residents of Waimea,” says Maree. “So, get out your phone, tablet or camera and show us the people, places or parts of the region that make you smile.” Richmond lad Sean Meir has entered his photo of a rainbow that graced the sky on 18 August, the first day of lockdown. “It appeared around 4pm and was really bright for at least an hour. I had to take a photo to capture the moment as it made me smile. I’m glad I can share that with other people.” Entries from TSNS member households will also go in a draw to win prizes donated by local businesses. Email entries to maree@tsns.org.nz by 10 October for a chance to see your photo in the display. Winners will be contacted by phone or email after the closing date. For more info or to become a free member of the Neighbourhood Support group, visit tsns.org.nz

Charity laces up boots to raise funds Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A local charity is lacing up its boots in preparation for its next big auction fundraiser. Walk With Us has put brand-new school and sports shoes onto the feet of more than 680 school pupils in the region. The charity is hosting its next big fundraiser, a kiwiana-themed charity auction, at Richmond’s Waimea Old Boys Club on Tuesday 9 November. Wyatt Crockett will be the special guest for the auction evening. Ticket holders will be able to bid for quality items, such as a helicopter ride for six, a week’s family campervan hire and a two-night stay on D’Urville Island for six people. Walk With Us trustee Jill Taylor says the evening provides a vital source of income for the charity as well as offering a great night out for the community. The last auction evening raised more than $30,000 for the charity. “We always have generous dona-

Tickets cost $25 and include traditional Kiwi food, with live and silent auctions running throughout the evening. Jill says they already have over 60

What’s On!

“We support community work and Walk With Us has proved successful in what it is trying to achieve in the region.” He says that the combined annual gym and swim membership is worth $1000 and is always a popular auction item. “We’re happy to donate our membership because it always generates quite a few bids and raises a lot of money for the charity, and that’s important to us.” Since 2012, the Walk With Us charity has given away over 680 pairs of shoes to school children in need across Nelson Tasman. Demand for the service is high and the charity is hugely dependent on community support. Jill says the non-profit organisation provides vouchers for school shoes, sports shoes and socks to families under financial pressure at all primary and intermediate schools across the region. Tickets cost $25, or tables $250 for 10. Be quick, tickets limited to 180 spaces. Instead of chocolate bars, lollies and other tempting treats that can often find their way into your shopping cart when you’re waiting at the checkout, Gary has made a switch, putting fruit, water and other healthy choices in their place, a move that has been celebrated by many in the community. In fact, they are the first full service supermarket in New Zealand to be confectionery and soft-drink free at all checkouts. Team member Sonja who has worked in the store for a year and a half and is a long time friend of the Watsons, understands that there is a wide range of dietary requirements in the community and strives to be as inclusive as possible with an extensive health foods range. You will find Keto, Gluten Free, Paleo, Organic, Plant Based and Low Sugar ranges. Look out for them on your next visit!

CONNECT CONNECT

This week marks Mental Health Awareness Week with Kiwis of all ages urged to take check of their most important gift, well-being. MHAW is run annually by the Mental Health Foundation and has been since 1993. MHAW is endorsed by the World Federation for Mental Health and is marked in over 150 countries at different times of the year. This year's theme is take time to kōrero/mā te kōrero, ka ora - a little chat can go a long way. This MHAW is all about connecting with the people in our lives and creating space for conversations about mental health and well-being. Whether it’s checking in with a mate, having a kōrero over some kai or saying hello to a stranger, a little chat can go a long way.

Beginning on Monday 27 September, over 13,000 people, organisations, schools and kura will jump on board to take part in well-being activities throughout the week.

You don’t tell someone who’s mentally ill or struggling, who’s having a low time in their lives, to harden up, because it doesn’t work. - John Kirwan Now more than ever, as New Zealanders adapt to changing alert levels, it’s important to connect with others and create

space for conversations about mental health and well-being. “All New Zealanders have had a tough couple of months going through lockdowns to fight the spread of Covid-19” says Shaun Robinson, chief executive of the MHF. “It’s only inevitable that frustration is setting in as we move in and out of different levels of contact. It’s so helpful to connect with others, have a kōrero and a laugh.” Health Minister Andrew Little says you never know when someone, who is feeling vulnerable, stops to talk, and just how much of a difference that can make. The MHAW 2021 Guide provides day by day activities that can be done at school, work or home, inspired by Te Whare Tapa Whā and the Five Ways to Wellbeing, which are simple strategies proven to boost well-being.

Brightwater School had a blast exploring the Wairoa River last week as part of the Whitebait Connection programme, run by Tasman Bay Guardians (TBG). The project aims to help young people appreciate and enjoy freshwater environments in the region and build a responsibility to protect local waterways. TBG environmental educator, Mel McColgan, says the programme takes children out to local rivers and streams to learn by doing. “We did some prep work in the classroom, so the students knew we were coming to look at the health of the river and the quality, clarity and flow of water by doing various activities.” After cycling 3km from school along the river, the students got into teams and worked together

using nets and buckets to gently catch macroinvertebrates and identity them on a critter chart. “The little bugs in the water are good indicators of oxygen levels and how much algae there is,” says Mel. As well as mayflies and stoneflies, the biggest catch was an eel. “It was so slimy when I touched it,” said Jack Coombes, before showing it off to the rest of the class. Mel says that even though the eel was only 10cm long, it was probably about 15 years old as they can live to up to 100. “As it’s been quite a wet winter, the river is in really good shape in terms of clarity and the variety of insects we’ve found,” she says. Once the students had used microscopes to study their findings, they released everything back into the water. “By encouraging young children to feel connected to their river, they gain a sense of responsibility to protect the waterways which will hopefully filter out into the wider community.” Brightwater School’s deputy principal, Todd Brodie, says that the day gave students a valuable insight into local ecosystems and ways to protect the environment.

Rachel George may have had her first baby only four months before starting to play netball for Stoke, but she managed to come away with the title of the season’s top player. Rachel George, nee Kersten, was named Nelson Netball’s Most Valuable Player for 2021. However, she only heard about it via a Zoom announcement after rushing to get cellphone reception in the remote Golden Bay. “We were in Wharariki Beach and hustling back trying to get some reception. It was very unexpected, but very exciting.” Her husband Dan proceeded to toot the car horn loudly in celebration. The couple had just moved back to Nelson in December and Rachel recently gave birth to their first child, Archie. However, it didn’t take long to get back into her sporting ways. “I knew if I got nine months down the track, I’d be gutted I

Lack of execution blamed for rare home defeat

Tasman on Friday were the efforts of debutant Macca Stringer and replacement halfback Louie Chapman, who brought some urgency to the party. Once again, Timoci Tavatavanawai was a potent ball of energy on the wing and extremely unlucky to be penalised late in the match. Andrew said the players had taken the result hard. “They are hurt, really hurt. “They all care for this team and when we don’t get the performance and result they will hold themselves and each other accountable. Expect a swift return to his usual lofty standards this weekend when Tasman host Southland at Lansdowne Park on Sunday, kick-off 4.35pm.

Tasman’s 2021 provincial rugby campaign might need a tuneup after a rare loss at home on Friday. The Mako was out-thought, out-enthused, and out-scored for the majority of their 3922 loss to Waikato at Trafalgar Park. It had been seven years since Waikato had got the better of Tasman and 14 years since they had beaten the Mako away from home. Tasman head coach Andrew Goodman described his side’s effort as “disappointing”. He laid the blame for their demise at lack of execution. Andrew said the side’s build-up during the week had gone well. “That’s the frustrating thing

about it … there was good energy, intent, and accuracy [about our training] but we just didn’t follow through tonight, for whatever reason.” Tasman’s woes stemmed from an inability to stamp their mark on the game in the early stages. They landed a secondminute penalty and had multiple opportunities through a wealth of possession. However, poor option-taking, lack of ball control and a staunch Waikato defence kept the visitors in the game, both physically and mentally. Then, two tries against the run-ofplay added to the visiting side’s self-belief while Tasman’s lack of attacking variation became apparent. Among a few bright spots for

The Waimai United women’s hockey team can now call themselves champions for the very first time after being on the brink of folding just one year ago. Waimai took out the premier women’s division in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon. Locked up at 1-all after regulation time with Federal Rawlings, Waimai went on to win a shootout 4-2 to cap a sensational season. Waimai dropped just a single game all year, scoring 53 goals and conceding only 16. Skipper Nic Brydon says she was incredibly proud of her side.

“It means the world to the team to win the title as it has never been won by Waimai before.” Nic says the team has an incredibly close and positive team culture. “We performed consistently this year and every player contributed to the success this year.” Nic says coach Alan Register was instrumental to their success. Meanwhile, Tasman White defeated Tasman Black 2-1 in the men’s premier final, a competition dominated by the two Tasman teams. The sides finished first and second after round robin with Tasman White dropping just one game and boasting an impressive 40-goal differential.
